ccording to area data from public health departments, Latinos are being disproportionately affected by the coronavirus. Mision Alcance (Mission Scope in English), a charity organization, is working to help Latinos and non-Latinos get the treatment they need. According to Mision Alcance founder Alma Vargas, the organization is offering multiple programs to help meet people’s needs. One program consists of offering people coronavirus tests. “We’ve been offering tests for people with the help of the Community Health Council (of Wyandotte County, Kansas), and people are starting to show up,” Vargas said. “Don’t be part of the statistics, … don’t wait until someone from your family dies to take this seriously.” The program offers the tests through multiple mobile sites. Identification is not required and a person’s immigration status is not questioned. Manuel Solano, Community Health Council program director, said the tests take a sample of

respiratory secretions, where the virus lives. Clients are asked to cough and provide a saliva sample with a cotton brush. It takes about 48 business hours to get the results. Those who are tested should “follow all (the) recommendations,” Vargas said. “This is not a game,” she remarked. “This (has) changed how we are living our lives. We need to be conscious. Friends and family are dying, … this is a serious issue.” In addition, Mision Alcance and the Community Health Council have “community workers for any needs,” Vargas said. Needs the organization addresses include employment. “If you are not working, we will connect you with agencies that will help you get access to different resources,” she said. Other services include connecting people with food pantries and providing guidance when filling out food stamp applications. All Mision Alcance programs are intended for the general public, regardless

Among the recommendations for creating a return-to-work plan, the guide suggests actively listening to employees and customers — including virtually meeting with employees to “understand their comfort re-entering” the workplace. Communication with them before, during and after reopening is essential. “Transparent and consistent communication is key for a successful re-entry,” the guide reads. The document also suggests a reopening in three phases: minimal reopening, phase 1; reopening with physical distancing, phase 2; and resume to normal, phase 3. The most important recommendation is that each business create its reopening plan based on its own situation and follow local government guidance. Love them enough to avoid exposing them to grave harm, health experts advise. The risk to moms is greatest from loved ones who have continued to work in a business that’s considered essential; those who live or work in an area of higher viral concentration; and COVID-19 frontline workers. Keeping a safe distance is the best way to love mothers and important maternal figures this year. That doesn’t mean commemorating the occasion must be cancelled, health experts suggest. Get creative this Mother’s Day. Moms, grandmas, aunts, great-aunts – all -- appreciate every gesture expressing love and gratitude for them. Handwrite a letter in which you describe memories of special moments spent together and explain why they’re so meaningful. Hand-craft a card for mom in which you communicate your feelings for her. Be sure to mail letters and cards soon. Pick out a house plant or bulbs or flowers for mom’s home, yard or patio. Offer to plant them if they’re for outdoors. Make coupons redeemable for future spa visits, manicures, lunch at mom’s favorite restaurant, a movie outing, sporting event or something else. If her favorite restaurant delivers or offers take-out, order her a meal. Be sure to check with the restaurant in advance to see if there are timing or delivery restrictions for Mother’s Day. If you’ve got old photos lying around, put a scrapbook together. If mom and her loved ones have electronic tools and know how to use them, visit her virtually. Making the effort and connecting with her via a video call will relieve her isolation and be especially appreciated. If the Internet gets overcrowded on Sunday and images get fuzzy, try again later or connect by phone. Mother’s Day has never been nor ever will be about the amount of money spent showing affection for beloved maternal figures or restricted by physical distance. Rather, it’s the effort, the thoughtfulness that counts. Making moms feel appreciated and cherished, up close or from afar … that’s what it’s about.

The WSDA has a web page devoted to reporting sightings of the insects and instructions on how to trap them. “Don’t try to take them out yourself if you see them,” WSDA entomologist Chris Looney stated in a blog post. “If you get into them, run away, then call us! Like many of President Trump’s announcements, the actual rules are much narrower than a total ban on immigration. The order will mostly affect employment-based immigrants. Immigrants that are inside the United States will not be affected. So, if

you are applying to adjust your status to a permanent resident inside the United States, this does not delay your case. Likewise, if you are applying for a U visa or DACA, you are also not included in the ban. Applicants for U.S. citizenship will also be able to continue with their process despite the order. The ban will affect immigrants who are outside of the US and are planning to obtain an immigrant visa at a U.S. Consulate abroad. The ban will not affect spouses or children of US citizens. They will be able to continue their process. Other family members of U.S. citizens and spouses/children of Permanent Residents will have to wait until the ban is lifted to be able to come to the U.S. Persons with Advance Parole documents can travel during this time.
