rancisco Molinar, known as “El Norteno” (Norteño in Spanish), died June 26 after battling the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Born in La Junta, Chihuahua, Mexico, Molinar had been a Hispanic radio personality in the Kansas City area since 2001. He worked for the radio station La Super X. Recently, he had begun transitioning to working for an online radio station. As El Norteno, Molinar was known for seeing the bright side of life, according to his best friend and radio personality, Gerardo Corpus, better known as “El Metido.” Molinar’s show also was characterized by his romantic songs. “He was always joking and fun to be around,” Corpus reminisced. “His humor was very clean, and he would never say a bad word. El Norteno tried to always be in a good mood. … He also was noble and humble.” Because of COVID-19, loved ones did not get to properly say goodbye. The family only saw Molinar through a video call for the last time. “Memories are all … (we) have left,” Corpus said. “The saddest thing is that, when people get in the hospital, you don’t have a chance to say goodbye. It’s hard to deal with a situation that won’t allow us to give condolences and a hug to the family as we would love to (do).” Corpus feels that the memory of El Norteno should serve as an

he Johnson County (Kansas) Election Office is encouraging residents to vote by mail for the August primaries and the November general elections. For the first time, the county has sent out mail-in ballot applications to all registered votes. “We’re operating in a big world of unknown in (our) elections this year because of COVID-19,” Connie Schmidt, Johnson County Election commissioner, told 41 Action News-KSHB. “Voting by mail is the safest way for the voters to participate this year.” In Kansas, anyone can vote by mail, provided they apply. For the primary, the deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is July 28. Schmidt also told the news outlet that the election office had already twice the number of requests for mail-in

The order will start at 12:01 a.m. Friday (July 3). “Every Kansan in a public space must wear a mask,” Kelly said during a press conference. “This doesn’t change where you can go or what you can do. It just means that, if you’re around other people, you must wear a mask.” Kelly said the face mask requirement would help slow the spread of the virus, as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to increase. Health experts have long supported the wide use of masks in indoor public spaces and crowded outdoor spaces as the best way to contain the spread of COVID-19. Many studies have supported this suggestion, like a Hong Kong study that concluded that, if 80% of a population were to wear masks, the number of COVID-19 infections would drop by about 8.3%.

This year, mail-in ballots also are an option. People can request them in person by 5 p.m. July 22 for the August election. The envelope must be notarized and sent back through the U.S. mail by 7 p.m. Election Day. In response to poll worker shortages because of the pandemic, the Kansas City Election Board is teaming up with Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas and other city council members to draft an ordinance to provide paid time off to city employees who work at the polls on Election Day.

Some of those time-honored observances have fallen victim to the Covid-19 pandemic; others have survived, although altered. Al fresco dining will go on in backyards and public spaces large enough to socially distance, weather permitting. To be safe, health officials advise picnicking only with household members -- those with whom we live. Concerts are cancelled, along with festivals, street fairs and live entertainment with public fireworks displays. On the Kansas side, Lenexa and Prairie Village are organizing themed “porch parades;” Prairie Village’s Villagefest will be a drivethru event. Stillwell’s parade is still on; so is Edgerton’s community picnic. Fort Leavenworth cancelled its popular, Independence Day celebrations. It will set off fireworks, however, but not at the typical Merritt Lake location. Since the fort’s offlimits to the public because of concerns over Covid-19, the fireworks will be launched near the intersection of Reynolds and Sherman avenues where Bell Hall once stood and explode over the Missouri River. Several area communities still plan to host official fireworks displays. Before heading out to one, confirm that it’s still on. Remember to keep your distance. Staying at least six feet away from other people in a crowd lessens our chances of contracting Covid-19. Wear a face covering. Following the current spike in the number of new cases, some communities are now requiring individuals in public over age 2 to wear a mask covering the nose and mouth. Stay home if you’re not feeling well or have a temperature of 100.4 or higher. Health officials trace the current spike in new coronavirus cases to Memorial Day and the coinciding relaxing of lockdowns. They’re warning of a possible rapid rise in new cases following Independence Day. In the 34 days between Memorial Day and June 28, the U.S. recorded nearly a million – 905,459 – new cases. That’s a 54.6 percent increase. During the same period, the number of deaths nationwide practically doubled from 68,998 to 125,768. In just the past two weeks, Kansas and Missouri and 29 other states have seen a precipitous upsurge in new cases. So let’s celebrate our freedoms this Fourth of July, and let’s do it safely and sanely so that sooner rather than later we can celebrate our independence from the coronavirus.

Cartagena’s time at Sumner helped her realize the type of teacher she wants to become. “(Teachers at Sumner) understand that Sumner can be stressful and they also understand that you have a life outside of school,” she said. “I just love the environment there and that’s the type of environment I want to teach in. That’s the type of environment I want to create for my classroom.” As the first person in her family attending college, Cartagena understands the pressure she has in making her family proud because her parents have done everything to make sure she has a better future. “Everything I did, I did it with them in mind,” she said. “(Graduating high school) is just the beginning. I have so much ahead of me, and this is just a sign that I’m going to do bigger things.” Like many high schoolers in the country, Cartagena’s senior year was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was a really big transition because I didn’t really have the motivation to do my work,” she said. Motivation went down further as on-site school events like prom and graduation were cancelled. But though Cartagena’s senior year did not end how she had expected, that did not stop her from graduating with the academy’s highest honors and already starting her higher education career. Cartagena, in turn, advises students who are starting high school to persevere. “I know it sounds cliché,” she said. “From experience, don’t give up. I persevered, I challenged myself and I graduated successfully and with honors, so definitely never give up.”

had worked for since she was little. “When I received the letter, I knew I wanted to go because I felt like it was the environment for me,” she said. “My teachers and parents both encouraged me to go because they knew my potential.” During the first few months, however, Cartagena doubted whether she could keep up with the demanding academic work. But she carried on with her studies and recently graduated from Sumner with the highest honors. Her mother even started crying when they were watching the virtual graduation ceremony. “I was really proud of myself because I didn’t give up,” she said. Cartagena is not taking a break. She is already taking online summer college classes at Kansas City, Kansas, Community College (KCKCC). Cartagena wants to become an elementary teacher. Through Sumner, she learned about the K-Step Up Program, a teacher education program that “offers high quality academics, great opportunities for clinical experience and flexibility through innovative distance supervision with financial support,” according to its official website. La FDA advierte no usar estos 9 desinfectantes para manos

La advertencia se debe a que se detectó metanol (alcohol de madera) en muestras de los desinfectantes de la compañía mexicana. El metanol puede ser tóxico si se ingiere o se absorbe a través de la piel. “El metanol no es un ingrediente aceptable para los desinfectantes de manos y no se debe usar dados sus efectos tóxicos”, afirmó en una declaración la FDA (en inglés). En un análisis de muestras, la FDA encontró que el desinfectante “Lavar Gel Hand Sanitizer” del fabricante contenía un 81% de metanol y el “CleanCare No Germ” contenía un 28% de metanol. La agencia recomienda que las personas que hayan comprado estos desinfectantes de manos dejen de usarlos inmediatamente y se deshagan del producto en “contenedores adecuados para residuos peligrosos”. La FDA aconseja no tirarlos en el inodoro ni vaciarlos en el desagüe. Mientras enfrenta una tropezada campaña de reelección, al Presidente de Estados Unidos le urge ayuda para conseguir más votos latinos en los próximos meses, antes que los electores vayan a las urnas. Actualmente Trump sólo tiene el apoyo del 21 por ciento de los latinos, según una encuesta reciente de Latino Decisions. Es un porcentaje menor del que consiguió en las elecciones de 2016, cuando obtuvo el 29 por ciento del voto hispano. Trump sabe que sin latinos no se puede quedar en la Casa Blanca. Y lo más probable es que por eso está invitando (y usando) a López Obrador. Quienes han trabajado con Trump saben que su única preocupación es la reelección. “Es muy difícil identificar cualquier decisión importante que haya tomado Trump que no tenga que ver con sus cálculos para reelegirse”, escribió en un nuevo libro John Bolton, quien fuera asesor de seguridad nacional de abril de 2018 a septiembre de 2019. Todo lo que hace Trump es por su conveniencia. Todo. Y López Obrador se equivoca si cree que le va a ganar a Trump en su propio juego y en su propia casa. Sin hablar inglés es casi imposible que el Presidente de México pueda imponer sus temas, como lo hace en las Mañaneras, en una conferencia de prensa en el Jardín de las Rosas de la Casa Blanca. El otro riesgo es de traición e indiferencia con los más de 12 millones de mexicanos, nacidos en México, que vivimos en Estados Unidos. Si López Obrador de verdad no quiere que Trump lo use como un póster de propaganda electoral, lo más inteligente es posponer la visita hasta después de las elecciones estadounidenses, el 3 de noviembre. Si no lo hace, López Obrador estaría cometiendo exactamente el mismo error que el expresidente

Enrique Peña Nieto, quien se reunió con Trump en Ciudad de México antes de las elecciones de 2016. En esa ocasión, Peña Nieto no se atrevió a criticar la absurda idea de Trump de que México pagaría por un nuevo muro en la frontera, ni tampoco refutó sus comentarios racistas contra los inmigrantes mexicanos. (“Traen drogas. Traen el crimen. Son violadores. Y algunos, supongo, son buenas personas”, había dicho el entonces candidato presidencial el 16 de junio de 2015). Y ahora López Obrador está igual de calladito. La crítica a AMLO es la misma que hicimos a Peña Nieto. Han dejado solos a los inmigrantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos. Nadie los defiende ante Trump. Lejos parece quedar el político que en 2017 publicó el libro Oye, Trump, una fuerte crítica a los abusos que sufren los inmigrantes mexicanos en el norte. Ese mismo año me dijo en una entrevista que Trump era un racista. “¿Trump es racista?”, le pregunté. “Sí, sí. Lo ha expresado”, me dijo López Obrador. “Azuza el racismo. Está en contra de los extranjeros. Tampoco es que lo sienta así. Es una estrategia política. Eso lo aclaro. Pero nos ha hecho mucho daño”. Dudo mucho que ese vaya a ser el tono de López Obrador en la Casa Blanca ante el Presidente más antimexicano y antiinmigrante que ha tenido Estados Unidos en décadas. AMLO, desde que llegó a la presidencia, ha hecho un enorme esfuerzo por evitar conflictos con Trump. Y el nuevo tratado comercial entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá —que entra en vigor el 1 julio y es la justificación oficial del viaje—, es producto de esa estrategia diplomática. Pero es muy desilusionante que el Presidente mexicano se quede callado ante los insultos y ataques de Trump. México, tristemente, ha aceptado que miles de centroamericanos se queden en su territorio, en terribles condiciones, mientras esperan la resolución de su solicitud de asilo en Estados Unidos. Y horas antes de que AMLO anunciara su visita, Trump estaba estampándole su firma a un nuevo trecho de muro en la frontera de Arizona con México. La historia juzgará duramente a Trump. Pero también a los que se convirtieron en silenciosos cómplices de sus políticas racistas y antiinmigrantes. Siempre es peligroso —y poco digno— aparecer junto a un bully y a un promotor de la intolerancia. Presidente López Obrador: posponga el viaje y espere a que los estadounidenses decidan en menos de cinco meses qué hacer con Trump. ¿Cuál es la prisa?

TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly directed the Kansas Department of Revenue to begin phasing in the availability of drive tests. To start administering these tests, steps had to be taken to ensure the health and well-being of all who interact with the Kansas Department of Revenue offices. “A significant part of getting Kansans back to work and back to school, is getting them back on the road,” Governor Kelly said. “By phasing in our drive tests statewide, with the proper health and safety protocol in mind, we make sure Kansans can travel to work, school, or to the grocery store.” Examiners will be outfitted with face masks and gloves. Additional protective equipment may be worn when administering these tests. All people inside a vehicle in which a driving test is being administered are required to wear a face mask. If an applicant declines to wear a mask, a test can be rescheduled for a later time once circumstances call for mask use to subside. This is in addition to continuing the implementation of social distancing guidelines and requiring appointments and screenings upon entering offices. “The operational processes we have implemented will help us continue our services in a healthy manner while also ensuring Kansans get back on the road safely,” said David Harper, Director of the Division of Vehicles. And, of course, handle fireworks safely if you plan to shoot them. Fireworks can be dangerous and can cause injuries if not handled properly. Avoid letting children handle fireworks because fireworks can be dangerous for them. Finally, remember that the COVID-19 pandemic will not last forever.
