Along with 600 other students of Shawnee Mission North, he recently received a letter offering him choices for his college education. “It was great to know (of) all the college opportunities that I had and earned,” Coromac said. Coromac received offers from 13 colleges that amounted to $687,600 in scholarship offers in total — a feat he hopes makes his parents proud. “I have struggled during school and I managed to get good grades,”

onald Trump ha mentido tantas veces —más de 20.000 desde que llegó a la presidencia, según el conteo del Washington Post— que cuando más necesitaba que la gente le creyera pocos lo hicieron. “Francamente, ganamos esta elección”, dijo el Presidente de Estados Unidos desde la Casa Blanca a las 2:30 de la madrugada del 4 de noviembre. Pero no pasó nada. Nada. Ninguna de las cadenas de televisión le hizo caso al Presidente. Nadie lo declaró oficialmente ganador de la elección. El Presidente no se quedó ahí, luego dijo: “Queremos que se detenga toda la votación”. Pero en ese mismo instante había varios estados contando votos, y nadie acató sus órdenes. Los estados siguieron tabulando sus resultados como si lo dicho por el Presidente no importara. Trump, ahí, era la viva imagen del hombre que había perdido su autoridad y su credibilidad, hablándole a una nación dividida que, en buena medida, no creía en sus palabras. Incluso quizás algunos de quienes votaron por él sospechaban de la versión presidencial. Tendrían razones para no creerle: la realidad era muy distinta a lo que decía Trump. Mientras millones de boletas seguían contándose, Trump no tenía los 270 votos electorales necesarios para conseguir la reelección. Los problemas de Trump comenzaron unas horas antes. A las 11:20 de la noche del martes 3 de noviembre la cadena de televisión Fox News —su favorita— declaró que el Presidente había perdido el estado de Arizona. Esto fue un golpe durísimo. En las elecciones de 2016, Trump ganó el estado y esta vez parecía escapársele de las manos. Uno de los asesores de Trump intentó que Fox News retractara su decisión pero no tuvo éxito, según reportó The New York Times. Los latinos de Arizona se movilizaron y sus votos parecen estar respaldando de manera contundente a Biden; un alegato claro contra Trump y sus políticas antiinmigrantes. Es probable que muchos votantes del estado recordaran la época de terror impuesta por Joe Arpaio, exalguacil del condado de Maricopa por más de veinte años —y aliado de Trump—, en la comunidad hispana. El terrible manejo de la pandemia —que ya ha cobrado alrededor de 240.000 vidas y contagiado a casi 10 millones de personas en Estados Unidos— fue la mayor vulnerabilidad de Trump en esta elección. El Presidente actuó mal y tarde, se guardó información en momentos clave —para no causar “pánico”, según le dijo al periodista Bob Woodward—, contribuyó al contagio al organizar eventos masivos (en la Casa Blanca y en actos de campaña) y dio un pésimo ejemplo al no usar cubrebocas en público en casi todo momento. La pandemia, también, cambió dramáticamente la manera en que votaron los estadounidenses. Más de 100 millones lo hicieron por adelantado y por correo. Según la información que dieron los electores al pedir una boleta electoral en ausencia por correo, se reveló que esta manera de votar sería más usada por los votantes a favor del Partido Demócrata, y que los republicanos eran más propicios a votar en persona el día de las elecciones. Aún así, a Trump le fue mejor en la elección que en los pronósticos de las encuestas. Al igual que en 2016, los encuestadores no encontraron a tiempo a esos trumpistas silenciosos y se volvieron a equivocar. El promedio de encuestas le daba a Biden una ventaja de 8,4 por ciento un día antes de las elecciones. Pero, mientras se seguían contando boletas el viernes pasado, la ventaja de Biden sobre Trump era menos del tres por ciento en el voto popular. Independientemente del margen de votos, hay un mensaje inequívoco: Joe Biden ya es el candidato presidencial con más votos en la historia de Estados Unidos (obtuvo más de 75 millones). La mayoría de los votantes estadounidenses ha dicho lo que quiere: un futuro sin virus y sin Trump.

Si bien el Sr. Biden no tomará posesión hasta el 20 de enero de 2021, todos podemos respirar un poco más tranquilos y esperar cambios positivos para nuestra comunidad. Biden ha prometido deshacer muchas de las políticas antiinmigrantes que hemos sufrido bajo Trump. El programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés) se inició en 2012 cuando el Sr. Biden fue el vicepresidente durante la presidencia de Obama. Apoya restaurar el programa a sus reglas originales inmediatamente después de convertirse en presidente. Eso significa que se aceptarán nuevas solicitudes para DACA a fines de enero de 2021. Debe prepararse para eso ahora reuniendo los documentos que demuestren que califica. Incluso puede ampliar el programa para que también se cubren los inmigrantes recién llegados y los inmigrantes mayores. Biden también ha prometido extender el programa de Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS). El programa TPS expira para la mayoría de los países en enero de 2021. Es probable que una Administración de Biden redesigne todos los países y permita la renovación de los permisos de trabajo de TPS. Esté listo para presentar la solicitud de inmediato a fines de enero si tiene TPS ahora. Los nuevos programas podrían incluir el programa de Acción Diferida para Padres de Estadounidenses (DAPA). Esta fue una Orden Ejecutiva emitida por la Administración de Obama en 2014 que habría extendido la protección contra la deportación y los permisos de trabajo a los padres de ciudadanos estadounidenses y residentes legales permanentes. 2021, we can all breathe a little easier and look forward to positive changes for our community. Mr. Biden has promised to un-do many of the the anti-immigrant policies we have suffered under Trump. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was started in 2012 when Mr. Biden was the Vice President under President Obama. He supports restoring the program to its original rules immediately upon becoming president. That means new applications for DACA will be accepted in late January 2021. You should get ready for that now by gathering documents showing you qualify. He may even expand the program so that more recently arrived immigrants and older immigrants could also be covered. Mr. Biden has also promised to extend the Temporary Protected Status program. The TPS program expires for most countries in January of 2021. A Biden Administration is likely to redesignate all countries and allow for renewal of the TPS work permits. Be ready to file right away in late January if you have TPS now. New programs could include the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) program. This was an Executive Order issued by the Obama Administration in 2014 that would have extended protection from deportation and work permits to parents of US Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents. The program was blocked by the courts and then cancelled by Trump. This program is ready to go for Biden to launch. The original requirements were that the person had been in the US for the previous five years in addition to meeting the parent requirements. More sweeping changes will need to come from the Congress. It is still unclear who will control the Senate - the Democrats or the Republicans. We will not know that until January 5, 2021 in a special election in Georgia. But even by himself, President Biden will be able to expand opportunities for immigrants in the new year. Get ready now! Tropical storm Eta approaches Florida after hitting Central America

The storm could reach minimal hurricane strength over the coming days, but it is expected to weaken as it approaches Florida. On parts of the state’s west coast, Eta could bring as much as 5 inches of rain, in addition to tropical storm-strength winds, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday (Nov. 10). This will be Eta’s third landfall, after making landfall Sunday (Nov. 8) in Cuba and last week as a Category 4 hurricane in Central America. In Nicaragua, Eta left a path of destruction across the northern side, leaving some neighborhoods completely flooded. Vice President Rosario Murillo said more than 51,000 families remained without power in the affected areas. In Honduras, hundreds of people were forced from their homes by floodwaters. Some 379 homes had been destroyed, 38 communities were cut off by washed out roads and five bridges were wiped out by swollen rivers. oliday season is fast approaching. Many Americans are planning H family gatherings. Unfortunately, the timing

of the Thanksgiving holiday could not be worse, in terms of risk. The coronavirus pandemic is worsening across the country, setting daily infection records. More than 235,000 Americans have died of COVID-19, and small household gatherings are believed to be fueling much of the spread. Because of this, public health officials warn against family and friends gathering in homes for the traditional Thanksgiving meal this year. However, they know many people plan to spend the holiday together, regardless. Here are some precautions to consider that will help you spend the holiday safely and help slow the spread of COVID-19: *Assess the risks: Answer a series of questions to determine the potential risks of your gathering. Do you have a vulnerable person at your family table? Are virus cases on the rise in your area? Are guests traveling from hot spots? If the answer is yes, perhaps reconsider bringing those guests into your home. *Keep gatherings small and short: Public health officials urge families to keep celebrations small and avoid mixing households. “Most people feel when they’re in the house with friends, they almost subconsciously let their guard down,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, told The New York Times. “They don’t realize they’ve come in from multiple cities, spent time in airports. They come to a house where Grandma and Grandpa are, or someone with an underlying condition, and they innocently and inadvertently bring infection into a home. It’s dangerous. You’ve got to be careful.” Experts also recommend keeping celebrations short to reduce the time of exposure to potential positive cases. *Ask guests to take early precautions: Ask them to try and reduce their contacts and potential exposures for at least a week, and preferably, two weeks before Thanksgiving. If testing is available in the area, consider asking all guests to be tested a few days before the holiday. *Move the dinner outside: If weather allows, try hosting all or part of any holiday celebrations outdoors. Look into fire pits and space heaters to warm a porch or patio. And consider a partially open space, like a screened-in porch or a garage with the door open to reduce the risk. *Open the windows: Most homes, by design, are poorly ventilated. Thus, experts recommend opening windows so that air can flow better, in case people cannot celebrate outdoors. *Wear masks during downtime: Experts advise all guests wear a mask when they are not eating. Wear your mask when watching the big football game, too. Remember, screaming and cheering increase the amount of viral particles you emit. *Do not share serving utensils and other items: Guests should have separate serving spoons, and avoid sharing and passing serving dishes and utensils, experts advise. The same goes with touching water pitchers, wine bottles and drinking glasses. Place disposable paper towels in the bathroom, so guests do not share the same hand towel. Space guests so they are not crowded around a table.

Full-time position available with KCMO’s Aviation Department, Fleet Maintenance Division, 125 Paris St., KCI Airport. Normal Work Days/Hours: MondayFriday, 7:00 AM- 3:30 PM., mandatory shift work during inclement weather. Manages the development, instruction, administration of and record keeping of the CDL Training program for the Aviation Department. Supervises the CDL Trainer position. Oversees the lesson plans, course curricula, visual and mechanical aides, written materials and hands-on instructions for various types of automotive equipment. Ensures that all training manuals, handbooks, videos and other training aids required for instruction are updated as needed. Assists with reviewing driving skill-set such as performing turns, backing, shifting, etc. Conducts driver performance checks in the field and provides training. Initiates counseling or disciplinary action if needed. Identifies the needs of new equipment in the department and ensures the specifications are met. Serves as Administrator for the M5 work order system for the department. Ensures that the M5 system is used correctly and to its full capacity. Runs cost reports to identify budgetary needs for the division and uses this data to order necessary parts and equipment. Handles all purchasing aspects of the Fleet Maintenance division. Maintains all Fleet contracts, identifies and approves new purchasing requisitions, verifies that all invoices have met contract terms and approves payment. Identifies and monitors training for all employees in the Fleet Division. Supervises and assigns tasks to the CDL Trainer, several Fleet and Senior Fleet Maintenance Technicians, and an administrative employee who will assist with the administrative functions of the M5 system. REQUIRES high school graduation and 5 years of experience at the journeyman level in light or heavy duty automotive equipment repair and maintenance work, including 2 years of experience in supervision over a large group of skilled workers engaged in light and heavy duty automotive equipment repair and maintenance work. Must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license in accordance with City of KCMO policies. Must possess a valid MO Class A, B or C CDL prior to the end of the probationary period as determined by the department. Must successfully complete a 10-year FAA background check. Must complete a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer physical as prescribed by the City. Preference given to candidates with experience using M-5 and/or knowledge of Maximo.
