El Dr. Allan Greiner, director médico del Departamento de Salud Pública del Gobierno Unificado (UGPHD, por sus siglas en inglés) en Kansas City, Kansas, dijo que la mayor diferencia es el tipo de tecnología utilizada en el desarrollo de las vacunas. Pfizer y Moderna usan tecnología de ARNm. “Lo que hace ese ARN es que puede decirle a una célula del cuerpo que produzca cierto tipo de proteína, y cuando las células de su cuerpo producen ese tipo de proteína, está diseñado para que ese pequeño trozo de proteína parezca parte de la coronavirus ... Entonces, una vez que esa proteína se produce en el cuerpo, el cuerpo genera una respuesta inmune a ella”, explicó Greiner. Esta es una tecnología relativamente nueva para el desarrollo de vacunas, dijo Greiner. Pero eso no significa que las vacunas no sean seguras. They are safe, he said. “They don’t tend to cause a lot of other bad side effects,” Greiner said. “And we’re not seeing people have bad responses to those mRNA vaccines.” Johnson & Johnson is a more traditional vaccine. Unlike the mRNA vaccines, scientists develop a harmless adenovirus — a common virus that, when not vaccinated, can cause colds, bronchitis and other illnesses — as a shell to carry genetic code on the spike proteins to the cells. Another difference in the vaccines is the efficacy percentage. The Pfizer vaccine has a 95% efficacy in preventing COVID-19 in those without prior infection. Recommended for anyone 16 and older, it requires two shots, 21 days apart. Moderna is 94.1% effective in preventing symptomatic infection in those without prior infection. Recommended for ages 18 and older, it also requires two shots, 28 days apart. Johnson & Johnson has a 72% overall efficacy and 86% efficacy against severe disease. Unlike Pfizer and Moderna, it only requires a single shot. It is recommended for ages 18 and older. Greiner emphasized how effective any of the vaccines are. “All the vaccines are very effective,” he said. “In fact, I think doctors are pretty surprised that they’re as effective as they are because they’re preventing people from ending up in the hospital and preventing deaths at almost 100%. We do think that people can still get coronavirus even after they’ve had the vaccine. But very few people get any serious infections and almost no one gets hospitalized or dies.” Greiner said COVID-19 vaccines are free and encouraged anyone who is eligible right now to get vaccinated. He emphasized that it does not matter their immigration status or whether they have health insurance or not. “(The vaccine) is just going to help prevent you from getting sick and prevent your family from getting sick,” he said. “We want everybody to just go ahead and get it, and then it hopefully will go completely away and we won’t have to worry about it anymore.”

That’s not happening.” Although the project officially started at the beginning of December 2020, Cervantes learned about the development after a letter addressed to his deceased mother arrived at the house in late January, he said. The letter said there would be a meeting with the City Planning Commission at 9 a.m. on March 2 via Zoom. Cervantes is off on Tuesdays, so he attended that meeting. But he knows that is not the case for many neighbors. “It’s like, the way that they’re doing this, it just seemed like it was being really sneaky,” Cervantes said of meetings being set up at times that might not work for most of the working people in the neighborhood. “How are you going to hear feedback from concerned citizens if they’re not able to attend?” The March 2 meeting with the City Planning Commission was postponed to May 4. Tinoco and Cervantes started a social media campaign and on Feb. 22 organized neighbors for a protest. They also started a petition to stop the project. The petition already has 80 signatures, Tinoco said. Tinoco has tried contacting City Council members Eric Bunch and Katheryn Shields. Almost a month later, she still has not received a reply. “To this day, not one peep, not a reply, no response to my concerns, even just to acknowledge (they) received (them),” she said. “It’s such a slap in the face to the citizens of Kansas City – good, taxpaying citizens that put these people in office, (people) that think that, maybe that if we stay quiet, that it will just go away, and we’ll stop bothering them.” Tinoco said they would like for someone to at least acknowledge their concerns, which include a raise in taxes, traffic and crime. Caleb Buland, who is overseeing development for the project, told Fox 4 News that his company, Exact Architects, welcomes the discussion and wants to talk to residents. “We will talk to the council members, we will talk to the neighborhood leaders and we will try and understand how to make it a collaborative process that, at the end of the day, (is) putting (together) some really cool new housing options,” Buland told Fox 4 News. Developers were hosting a meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday (March 16). Tinoco and Cervantes planned to attend, hoping their concerns would be heard and addressed, they said.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas described as “no place for a child.” The U.S. must get control of the unfolding crisis – secure our borders; carefully develop sensible, practical immigration policies; and, establish an orderly, organized, fair and nimble immigration system. Current conditions present potentially grave risks to everyone, Americans and migrants. Health officials caution that the situation at our southern border is a potential Covid-19 superspreader. In the past 12 months, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities have “experienced some of the worst outbreaks of the virus,” Science Magazine reported Feb. 26. The virus has been allowed “to run rampant,” endangering local communities, detention facility staff and immigrants. Detainees and staff exposed to the coronavirus become “disease vectors” out of the facility, which can be “catastrophic” for neighboring communities. Migrants, at the mercy of human traffickers and coyotes exploiting the border situation, are endangering themselves, a tragic fact heralded regularly in headlines. Two weeks ago, 13 undocumented immigrants were killed when the SUV they were crowded into collided with a big rig. The scene of the crash was a desolate stretch of highway in California’s Imperial Valley just outside the little town of Holtville, identified by immigration advocates as “ground zero for border crossings.” The dead ranged in age from 15 to 53. On Monday night, a head-on collision in Val Verde County, in southwestern Texas claimed the lives of six undocumented immigrants. Migrants on foot also face risks: assault; drowning in waterways; death by exposure; hyperthermia; injury; venomous snake or insect bites; dying of thirst; or being preyed upon by human traffickers and coyotes. Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that he welcomes working with U.S. President Biden to control migration from Central America. At the same time, he said that Biden’s encouraging migration is putting a burden on Mexico. The U.S. must tighten border security and discourage mass migration from Central America. It unfairly burdens Mexico, and it’s cruel and unrealistic to animate the hopes of desperate Central Americans in vain. We can’t let in everyone. Not when we have more than a half-million homeless Americans.

En honor de Nevenka, valiente pionera cuando nadie escuchaba uisa Antonia. Cristina. Susana. Odalys. Larissa. Dulce. Jarid. Los nombres de algunas de las víctimas de feminicidio en México estaban sobre la valla metálica que protegía el Palacio Nacional, donde reside y trabaja el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador. La noche anterior un proyector había puesto las palabras “México feminicida” sobre la fachada del palacio. El mensaje a gritos de las mexicanas era: no nos maten más. Pero el presidente nunca lo entendió. Las cifras son brutales. En México, 967 mujeres fueron asesinadas por el hecho de ser mujeres el año pasado, según reportes oficiales (es decir, no hay otros datos). Ese número es

campaña fue tan acertado: “Primero los pobres”. Y por eso tiene una sólida aprobación del 59 por ciento de los mexicanos, según una encuesta reciente de Mitofsky. Pero esa destreza política no se ve ahora. Se equivocó con las mujeres. Es muy difícil entender por qué el Presidente se ha encaprichado en defender la candidatura de Félix Salgado Macedonio, acusado de al menos tres casos de presuntos ataques sexuales, según reportó The New York Times, para la gubernatura de Guerrero por su partido, Morena. Lejos de mantenerse neutral, calificó como un “linchamiento mediático” las criticas al candidato y, cansado de los cuestionamientos de la prensa, dijo dos palabras de las que podría arrepentirse toda la vida: “Ya chole”, que significa algo parecido a “ya basta de molestias”. Miles de mujeres no se quedaron calladas ante ese

casi igual que los 969 feminicidios reportados en 2019. Ambas cifras, que corresponden a los dos primeros años de López Obrador como presidente, son más de cuatro veces los 426 feminicidios reportados en 2015. No es difícil entender la indignación en el país: la situación no ha mejorado para las mujeres en México e incluso —matizando con los casos no registrados del pasado o no investigados como feminicidio— se puede decir que ha empeorado. Y eso es exactamente lo que miles de mujeres le querían decir al Presidente el lunes 8 de marzo, el Día Internacional de la Mujer. Por favor, haga algo para que no nos sigan matando, violando, acosando y maltratando. Es una petición clara y puntual, es un pedido por los derechos más básicos. Pero el presidente pareció escuchar otra cosa. Dijo que sus opositores conservadores habían cooptado la protesta y confabulado para atacarlo. “No se debe enfrentar la violencia con la violencia; fue un acto de provocación abierto, descarado”, dijo en su conferencia matutina, conocida como Mañanera, al día siguiente de la manifestación en la que hubo decenas de heridos, entre manifestantes y policías. Y luego, en una sola frase, intentó desacreditar un movimiento cargado de reclamos legítimos: “Mucha falsedad, mucha hipocresía, mucha manipulación”. El Presidente, así, se ponía del lado equivocado de la historia. Había que estar con las mujeres y no estuvo. Y parece dispuesto a seguir en el error. López Obrador, hay que reconocerlo, tiene un instinto político muy bien desarrollado. Tras décadas de abusos, robos y corrupción en los gobiernos de los partidos que se han alternado el poder antes de su llegada a la presidencia —el Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) y el Partido Acción Nacional (PAN)—, AMLO entiende que hay un gran resentimiento social en México y que tiene que comportarse, antes que nada, como un líder moral. Por eso decidió no vivir en Los Pinos y optó por convertirlo en un museo. Por eso viaja en la clase económica de aviones comerciales y no en una aeronave presidencial que costó más de 200 millones de dólares. Por eso no se quiso vacunar antes que la mayoría de los mexicanos. Por eso su eslogan de

exabrupto presidencial y se hizo tendencia en Twitter una petición masiva a López Obrador a romper el pacto patriarcal, en referencia a dejar de proteger a otros hombres, incluso a quienes han sido señalados de crímenes. “En México se protege el Palacio Nacional antes que a las mujeres de los feminicidas y los violadores”, le escribieron en una carta pública más de 2,500 mujeres. “Exigimos una estrategia nacional de seguridad con perspectiva de género para frenar los feminicidos. [...] Exigimos también que rompa el pacto patriarcal con el que ha defendido y ha llevado hasta hoy al presunto violador Félix Salgado Macedonio a la candidatura oficial”, escriben. “Vivimos en un país en el que todos los días 11 mujeres y menores de edad son asesinadas. El 97 por ciento de los feminicidios quedan impunes. Cada 4 minutos una mujer es violada”. No se le puede decir “ya chole” a esto. En una entrevista en 2017 le pregunté a López Obrador, entonces candidato presidencial, si él era feminista. Pero no quiso contestar directamente a la pregunta. “Soy respetuoso de las mujeres”, me dijo, “las mujeres merecen ir al cielo”. El Presidente no tiene que ser feminista para proteger a las mexicanas, que son, según el último censo, poco más de la mitad del pueblo que representa. En su gabinete de gobierno tiene a más ministras (9) que cualquier otro gobierno en la historia de México. Por eso es incomprensible que no se haya puesto del lado de las mujeres en este momento tan importante. Y, al final, no se ha atrevido a romper el pacto patriarcal. Por sus errores en esta crisis, López Obrador parece atorado en el pasado. Pero todavía está a tiempo para corregir. Primero, quitándole su apoyo a la candidatura de Salgado Macedonio y, luego, diseñar y ejecutar planes, mecanismos y legislaciones concretos —con un presupuesto definido y transparente— para evitar que maten, violen y acosen a tantas mujeres en México. Sí, es mucho pedir, pero por eso 30 millones de personas lo eligieron presidente: para proteger la vida de todas y de todos. Se acabó la época de promesas, excusas y repartición de culpas. Es la hora de dar resultados. Las mujeres mexicanas seguirán frente al Palacio Nacional y frente al poder hasta ver un cambio.

Para Niño, trabajar para Dos Mundos durante más de 30 años ha sido “una experiencia maravillosa”. “Llegué a saber lo que estaba pasando en nuestra comunidad”, dijo. “Estaba rodeado de gente hermosa. Clara y Manuel (Reyes, quienes fundaron el periódico) son como mis hermanos, así que durante mi tiempo… (en) el periódico, sentí que estaba con mi familia”. Niño se describe a sí misma como trabajadora, honesta y humilde. “Aprecio mi vida y siempre agradezco a Dios por todas las bendiciones que me ha dado”, dijo. Una de esas bendiciones es su familia. Madre de dos, ama y ha cuidado a sus hijos desde que los tuvo, dijo. Considera que conocer a su esposo, el amor de su vida, es uno de sus mayores logros. “Mi matrimonio fue un momento único”, dijo Nino. “Era un marido maravilloso”. Niño, conocida por su sonrisa, está feliz de haber sido nominada como mujer de inspiración para el Mes de la Mujer. “Me siento tan feliz”, dijo. “Fue una sorpresa tan maravillosa. I missed Colombia, I missed the country and its customs. Then, I got used to the United States and now I call it home.” Now 90 but looking like a 70-year-old, Nino worked at a store and for Dos Mundos until March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic started. “When the pandemic started and I didn’t have my jobs, I felt very sad,” she said. “I couldn’t see anyone; I couldn’t hug anyone.” For Nino, working for Dos Mundos for 30-plus years was “such a wonderful experience.” “I got to know what was happening in our community,” she said. “I was surrounded by beautiful people. Clara and Manuel (Reyes, who founded the newspaper) are like my brothers, so during my time … (at) the newspaper, I felt I was with my family.” Nino describes herself as hardworking, honest and humble. “I just appreciate my life and I always thank God for all the blessings he has given me,” she said. One of Nino’s blessings is her family. A mother of two, she loves and has cared for her children since she had them, she said. She considers meeting her husband, the love of her life, one of her greatest achievements. “My marriage was a unique moment,” Nino said. “He was such a wonderful husband.” Nino, who is known for her smile, is happy with being nominated as a woman of inspiration for Women’s History Month. “I feel so happy,” she said. “It was such a wonderful surprise. It was something special because it is my beloved newspaper. I just feel so excited.” To honor Women’s History Month, Nino offers this advice to women. “I … (hope) they achieve all the things they want,” she said. “Don’t be scared. Don’t be afraid of doing the things … (you) want to do.”

Nacida en Chihuahua, México, Cabral trabaja como directora de educación religiosa en Blessed Sacrament Parish en Kansas City, Kansas. “Es un honor trabajar ayudando a la comunidad”, dijo. “Me siento muy feliz porque puedo ayudar a familias, niños y jóvenes a acercarse a Dios y su fe”. La fe es una de las partes más importantes de la vida de Cabral. Es su todo, dijo. “Gracias a mi fe, he superado diferentes pruebas en la vida y ... (he llegado) a donde estoy hoy”, dijo. Cabral fue nominada como homenajeada en el Mes de la Mujer por su dedicación y trabajo con la comunidad. “No esperaba esta nominación”, dijo. “Siento que lo que hago es parte de mi vida. No lo he hecho porque quiero algún tipo de reconocimiento, así que ser nominada es una agradable sorpresa”. Para honrar el Mes de la Mujer, Cabral tiene un mensaje para las mujeres de la comunidad hispana. “Apreciate a ti mismo”, dijo. “Ámate a ti mismo y trata de ayudar a los demás”.

Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Cabral works as the director of religious education at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Kansas City, Kansas. “It is an honor to work helping the community,” she said. “I feel so happy because I can help families, children and young people to get close to God and their faith.” Faith is one of the most important parts of Cabral’s life. It is her everything, she said. “Thanks to my faith, I have overcome different tests in life and … (gotten) to where I am today,” she said. Another important part of Cabral’s life is her family. “My family is my treasure,” she said. “I have a friendship with my parents. I like to enjoy my brother, my sister-in-law and my nephews. They are a blessing. My friends are all an important part of my life. They are always supporting me.” Being a Latina also is a blessing to Cabral. “I feel blessed to be able to speak two languages and … (love) two cultures,” she said. “I like to help people even with the simplest thing.” Cabral was nominated as a Women’s History Month honoree for her dedication to and work with the community. “I wasn’t expecting this nomination,” she said. “I feel that what I do is part of my life. I have not done it because I want some sort of recognition, so being nominated is a nice surprise.” To honor Women’s History Month, Cabral has a message to women in the Hispanic community. “Appreciate yourself,” she said. “Love yourself and try to help others.”

The favorite part of Negrete’s job is empowering Latinos. Her office oversees helping the community become civically engaged. The office’s work ranges from teaching Latinos how to connect with elected officials to teaching them how to run for office. “Seeing a person go from feeling like there is no way to make a difference to realizing their power and connecting with others to taking part in leadership is my favorite because that is how our communities get better representation,” Negrete said. For the longest time, the Hispanic community nationwide has been labeled as a “sleeping giant” with the power to do a lot of things, but not enough Hispanics are civically engaged. Negrete is slowly seeing that change in Kansas. “We’re creating a better representation at the state level,” she said. A mother of two, Negrete’s second child was born during the pandemic, so she knows firsthand the struggles Kansas families are facing during the pandemic and encourages them to keep going. “It has been so challenging, but we’re all going through it,” she said. “Don’t feel discouraged.” Lastly, Negrete advises young Hispanics to find a mentor. “It’s so important to have a mentor,” she said. “So find mentors that inspire you to think about where you want to be and find that mentorship, and I say this all the time, we are not leaders unless we are helping guide those that are coming up (after) us.”

The project includes construction of 274 new apartments housed in eight 3-story wood framed apartment buildings on walkout basements and one 3-story wood framed apartment building on a slab-on-grade foundation, a 6,521sf clubhouse, 49 detached garage bays housed in five buildings, a maintenance shop and nail kiosk located on a 13.99-acre site. Total square footage of the project is 286,424. Milhaus Construction, LLC will be partnering with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas (“UG”) for this project and will be seeking participation from Local Business Enterprises (“LBE”), Minority Business Enterprise (“MBE”) and Women Business Enterprise (“WBE”) as further defined in the UG Purchasing Department Home/ Glossary.
