Today, I am going to tell you some of the things you can do, if you are fully vaccinated.”

According to the CDC, it is O.K. for people who are fully vaccinated to gather indoors with people who are fully vaccinated without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart. People who attend events indoors with strangers, however, should wear a mask and avoid large indoor gatherings.

Kansas City, Kansas, is home to more than 50 taco spots. Many of them are family businesses. According to the article, something that sets the city’s tacos apart from betterknown cities is how diverse its Mexican population is.

“Unlike other U.S. cities, Kansas City’s Mexican population comes from nearly all of Mexico’s cultural regions, which means KCK doesn’t specialize in carnitas, mole or sopes, but is home to masters of all Mexican dishes,” the article reads. “If you can find it in Mexico, there’s a family in Kansas City serving it today.”

The Kansas City, Kansas, Convention & Visitors Bureau is aware of the quality of the city’s Mexican food. In 2020, it launched the KCK Taco Trail, an online pass that includes nearly 50 local taquerias, to promote those local businesses. As people visit more places, they unlock prizes, including taco decals, jars of salsa and T-shirts.

l Westside CAN Center ha ganado el premio Musco Lighting Give-Back Award de la Asociación de Parques y Recreación de Missouri (MPRA, por sus siglas en inglés).

El premio Musco Lighting Give-Back se otorga a cualquier organización sin fines de lucro o empresarial que haya realizado una contribución destacada a la recreación y/o parques.

“El Westside CAN Center no sólo es una maravillosa organización social e impulsada por la comunidad, sino que también es un gran socio en la defensa de la gente de la comunidad de Westside y de los parques y la recreación”, dice un video de la MPRA que anuncia el premio. “A menudo van más allá, y KCMO Parks and Recreation tiene la suerte de asociarse con una organización tan increíble”.

“The Westside CAN Center is not only a wonderful social and community-driven organization, but they are also a great partner in advocating for the people of the Westside community and for parks and recreation,” a video from the MPRA announcing the award said. “They often go above and beyond, and KCMO Parks and Recreation is fortunate to partner with such an amazing organization.”

The award presentation took place Tuesday (April 27) at the KC Parks and Recreation Administration Building during the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners meeting.

Jody D. Siemer, MPRA manager of recreation community services, expressed her gratitude about the work the center does.

“I would like to say thank you for all the great work you all do both at the Westside CAN Center as well as all of the programming contributions you all make to the Tony Aguirre Community Center,” Siemer wrote.

Jorge Coromac, Westside CAN Center executive director, expressed his happiness and gratitude at receiving such a recognition.

“For sure our gratitude and recognition goes to everyone that through all these years have been working tirelessly embracing the partnership with the Tony Aguirre Community Center and Parks and Rec,” Coromac wrote in an email about the award.

Westside CAN Center’s mission is to facilitate the creation of a safe, healthy, viable, civicallyengaged neighborhood in which to live, play and work.

Back to school: recouping learning losses

2020, Kansas Gov. Kelly closed the state’s K-12 schools to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and local governments on the Missouri side closed 21 school districts.

It was the same around the globe, affecting 95 percent of the world’s students. The Covid-19 pandemic caused the largest disruption to education in modern history, according to the United Nations.

Now, it’s time to assess and address student learning loss. The next few months are critical, warn education specialists. The process of getting students back on track academically will require a joint effort involving students, parents, teachers, school administrators, counselors, social services and more.

Identifying specific learning gaps for each student and evaluating whether each student has disengaged with school and learning and to what degree will require patience and a thoughtful approach. One-size-fits-all won’t work; this demands personalized attention.

Schools are also being urged by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to focus on students’ social and emotional well-being, paying special attention to students from underserved communities. First- and second-graders, English-language learners, students of color, students with disabilities, homeless students, students chronically performing below grade level and economically disadvantaged students are at the greatest risk of needing intensive support and interventions, reports the education nonprofit, NWEA. Having students back in school physically is just the beginning of the process to help them get past the pandemic’s traumatic disruptions and experiences, assess their specific needs and help them move forward academically, socially and emotionally.

School districts are considering all options.

They include extending the school year, requiring summer school and expanding programming, hiring tutors and counselors, expanding afterschool programs, adding hours to the school day, offering educational and enrichment programs that promote literacy, allowing students to repeat a grade and partnering with community organizations.

The federal government will help bankroll whatever approaches school districts take.

The American Rescue Plan approved by Congress in March includes $128 billion to address Covid-related K-12 education challenges.

Parents are likely celebrating the return of in-person learning. For the past year, they’ve been responsible for the education of their children. Many were also dealing with effects of the pandemic; working extra hours; struggling to pay rent or buy groceries; or working from home. They may not speak English; others may not be literate in their native language.

As much as they’d like to relinquish their role in facilitating K-12 learning, their active involvement is every bit as critical. In partnering with educators and counselors, parents help ensure the continuity of their children’s education and avoid irreparably damaging their educational/life prospects.

Besides working as a team with teachers and others, there’s a lot parents can do to help their students, especially those between grades one and four, make up for missed instruction, say researchers. Since reading is integral to all learning and long-term educational success, they advise reinforcing reading skills at home.

Choose books with vocabulary slightly higher than the child’s reading level. Build bridges between stories the child knows and loves and more challenging vocabulary. Help explain meaning by suggesting definitions, paraphrasing or synonyms. Reinforce new words with flashcards or Post-its for play and review. Encourage the child to read aloud.

The time will come when parents can resume pre-pandemic normal homework help and oversight responsibilities. Until then, they’re equal partners with educators and others mitigating the learning loss and other negative consequences of remote or disrupted learning.

or casi diez años el Centro de Información y Asistencia a Mexicanos (CIAM) ha contribuido a reforzar las capacidades de atención de las 51 oficinas consulares de México en Estados Unidos, operando como un punto de contacto que brinda una respuesta humana, profesional y oportuna a las necesidades de nuestros connacionales en materia de asistencia y protección consular.

Con servicio las 24 horas del día, siete días a la semana, el CIAM atendió más de un cuarto de millón de llamadas (233 mil 276) entre agosto de 2019 y junio de 2020 a través del número 5206237874, de acuerdo con información de la Cancillería mexicana.

Cada una de las 700 llamadas diarias -en promedio- al CIAM recibe atención integral a cargo de personal en vivo, que orienta sobre servicios consulares, actualidad migratoria y prevención y protección a personas mexicanas.

Tres ejemplos muestran cómo cada caso es distinto, único, y se toman en cuenta diversos factores para su atención: En el hospital al que acude para tratamiento regular de una enfermedad crónica, a una mexicana de 45 años de edad le informan que por falta de seguro médico no podrán atenderla en el futuro. El CIAM puede referirla al Consulado, donde se buscarán opciones mediante la Ventanilla de Salud o asistiéndole para repatriación de persona enferma, de las cuales las Representaciones de México en el Exterior (RME) realizaron 640 entre 2019 y 2020.

Un hombre de 80 años de edad fallece y su familia desea trasladar los restos a Durango desde el sureste de Missouri. Con una llamada al CIAM reciben orientación y comienzan trámites de traslado de restos, como uno de los casi cinco mil realizados entre 2019 y 2020 con apoyo de las RME en todo el mundo.

Una trabajadora mexicana en Kansas quiere reportar acoso sexual en su lugar de empleo. Desde el CIAM se realiza un enlace inmediato a la línea de emergencia del Consulado en Kansas City, donde se activa el protocolo de atención integral a la mujer para mitigar la situación de vulnerabilidad ante este caso de abuso.

The CIAM 24/7 seven-days-a-week hotline answered more than a quarter of a million calls (233,276) between August 2019 and June 2020, through the 520-6237874 phone number, according to information of the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs.

Each of the 700 daily calls -on average- to CIAM receives comprehensive attention from on-duty operators on consular services, immigration policy and preventive information.

Three examples show how each case is different and how various factors define each call: At the hospital where she receives regular treatment for a chronic disease, a 45-year-old Mexican woman is informed that due to her lack of medical insurance, they will not be able to treat her in the future. CIAM refers her to the Consulate, where the Window for Health program navigates her to find treatment alternatives or apply the “repatriation of ill persons procedure”, that between 2019 and 2020 assisted 640 individuals globally through the network of Mexican embassies and consulates.

Since then, countries worldwide have designated dates to stage their national observances of Children’s Day. Mexico has set April 30 for its observance.

In a COVID world, Children’s Day offers parents an excellent opportunity to take children out of their pandemic routine while creating special memories for the family. If you plan to observe Children’s Day Friday like Mexico does, the following tips will help you enjoy this special day with your children safely at home: *Dress-up game: Get everyone to dress up as their favorite character. Seeing older people wearing costumes will surely light up your children’s faces. For them, it is absolute happiness to dress up and see their family involved.

If you do not have costumes, try creating original ones with whatever you find at home.

Qué habría pasado si el asesinato de George Floyd no ¿ hubiera sido grabado en video? Es posible que no hubiera tenido la repercusión que tuvo: quizás no se habría hecho justicia,

El hecho de que esta historia se haya repetido tantas veces hace patente un patrón de conducta policiaca contra personas no blancas. “Cuando veo a George Floyd veo a mi padre”, dijo Frazier durante su testimonio. “Veo a mis hermanos, a mis primos, a mis tíos, porque todos ellos son negros [...] y veo cómo pudo haber sido cualquiera de ellos”.

En esta época de fake news en las redes sociales, de granjas de bots o trolls y de tecnología que hace posible que se puede modificar de manera hiperrealista la cara o voz de una persona (los llamados deep fakes) estamos cada vez más entrenados a sospechar de lo que vemos. Es un escepticismo que puede ser sano cuando ayuda a discernir la verdad de la falsedad, pero profundamente dañino cuando se trata de llegar a la verdad en un caso. ¿Cómo sé si la imagen de una protesta, un accidente o una guerra que veo corresponde al país y a la fecha que indican? Pero en el caso del video de George Floyd todo lo que vimos fue cierto.

Se hizo justicia. Pero los problemas de fondo siguen sin resolverse. Que fuerzas del orden sigan matando a personas negras es inaceptable y debemos diseñar políticas específicas para evitar sucedan. Y ahora hay un temor más inquietante: si no hay nadie alrededor para grabar la atrocidad, quizás no pase nada. Es necesario lograr que no todo el peso recaiga en ciudadanos de a pie que, con valentía e incluso riesgo personal, saquen su celular y graben estos crímenes.

Este es el caso de Darnella Frazier, quien el 25 de mayo del año pasado tenía 17 años y mientras avanzaba por una calle de Minneapolis vio cómo se cometía un delito y apretó el botón de grabar.

Ese día la policía arrestó a un hombre negro de 46 años luego que el empleado de una tienda denunciara que había pagado unos cigarrillos con un billete falso de 20 dólares. Esposado con las manos en la espalda y boca abajo, tirado en el piso, con la rodilla del expolicía Derek Chauvin sobre su cuello, George Floyd repitió más de una veintena de veces la frase: “No puedo respirar”. El video dura unos angustiosos nueve minutos y 29 segundos. El video de Frazier, uno de al menos dos transeúntes, fue crucial para el juicio contra el expolicía y también para impulsar el movimiento contra la injusticia racial en el mundo.

El testimonio de Frazier en el juicio fue demoledor: “Me he pasado noches pidiéndole disculpas a George Floyd por no haber hecho más, por no haber interferido físicamente y haber salvado su vida. Pero esto no se trata sobre lo que yo debí haber hecho sino de lo que él [Chauvin] debió haber hecho”.

El Flavors of Central Tour tiene como objetivo mostrar los restaurantes del área y ayudarlos a reactivar sus negocios, dijo Edgar Galicia, director ejecutivo de CABA. “Todos nuestros restaurantes y negocios han sufrido durante todo el año y necesitamos reactivar su economía, así que lo estamos haciendo”, dijo Galicia.

Los restaurantes participantes que aparecen en el tour han invertido en él para promocionarse, dijo Galicia. Hasta ahora, dijo que unos 180 invitados se han inscrito para el recorrido.

El evento comienza a las 9:30 a.m., con registro en Bethany Park. Después de registrarse, los participantes recibirán un mapa, una pulsera de seguridad y un vale para cada restaurante.

he Central Avenue Betterment Association (CABA) is hosting a restaurant tour to promote local businesses on Saturday (May 1).

The Flavors of Central Tour aims to showcase area restaurants and help them reactivate their businesses, said Edgar Galicia, CABA executive director.

“All of our restaurants and businesses have suffered throughout the year and we need to reactivate their economy, so we’re doing that,” Galicia said.

Participating restaurants featured on the tour have invested in it to promote themselves, Galicia said. So far, he said about 180 guests have signed up for the tour.

The event starts at 9:30 a.m., with registration at Bethany Park. After checking in, the guests will get a map, a security bracelet and a voucher for each restaurant.

“You get to go from place to place and enjoy their food,” Galicia said. “Each restaurant has an offering, and it really works for everyone because it’s a self-guided tour, so you’re not in a big group. You’re staying

Quiere ponerse la vacuna de Pfizer o la de Johnson and Johnson? Generalmente no te preguntan qué vacuna deseas pues cuando llegas al lugar tienen un lote con determinadas vacunas ya sea la Pfizer, Moderna o Johnson and Johnson pero en medio de la “presión” exclamé: “la de Johnson and Johnson” y me pusieron un brazalete naranja, que era el color que ponían a quienes elegían esta vacuna. Caminé hasta llegar a un punto en el que otro uniformado decía en voz alta “Los de Pfizer tomen el camino a la derecha y los de Johnson and Johnson a la izquierda” al verme en frente a esos dos caminos paré y pensé aterrada: “¿Habré tomado la decisión correcta?” “¿Será que la vacuna de Pfizer es mejor?”

y en mi pánico me hice a un lado para llamar a mi doctor y preguntarle, pero no me contestó, así que en ese momento, me armé de valor, levanté el brazo, mire el brazalete naranja en mi muñeca y me dije “María por alguna razón elegiste instintivamente el brazalete de Johnson and Johnson así que no cambies de manera de pensar y confía en tu intuición”, entonces procedí a ponerme la vacuna de Johnson and Johnson. Apenas salí del lugar recibí la llamada de mi doctor Juan Rivera y cuando le conté cuál vacuna me puse y la incertidumbre que viví para elegirla, me dijo “María las tres vacunas son muy buenas, así que tomaste la decisión correcta y lo bueno es que te tocó solo un pinchazo”.

Un ritmo constante lo llevará a donde quiere ir. Las expectativas realistas aliviarán el estrés y lo impulsarán a usar su imaginación para pensar en ideas singulares. No presente lo que tiene para ofrecer hasta que tenga todo en su lugar.
