She remembers her mother always bringing her and her 13 siblings to many church events. “Since I (could) remember, Mom hosted the Posadas at my house, all nine days,” Carmona said. “I think that’s where my passion and love for God, the Virgin and everything else started.” After marrying Reyes Carmona, she and her husband moved to the Argentine neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas. Reyes and Maricruz immediately became active with St. John the Evangelist Church. “For over 10 years, we gave marriage preparation classes,” she said. “We also gave first communion classes, read the lectures during Mass; and before I was married, I led youth groups.” The mother of four daughters and a son, Carmona has tried to

KCMO mayor relaxes COVID-19 guidelines na orden de emergencia COVID-19 revisada entró en vigencia el 30 de abril en Kansas City, Missouri, eliminando los límites de capacidad y reduciendo el requisito de máscara en algunos casos. “Volvemos al tipo de orden que vimos a mediados del verano de 2020”, dijo el alcalde Quinton Lucas el 26 de abril durante una conferencia de prensa. However, there will no longer be capacity or social distancing regulations in those spaces. And restaurants and bar patrons are no longer required to be seated while in the building. Wearing masks remains a requirement in those public spaces, if people are within 6 feet of one another. Despite the pandemic, her children have found ways to visit her every weekend. “They actually cooked for me on Sunday for my birthday, which was on May 3,” she said. “We’re a very united family and we all get along.” Although all her kids are adults, Carmona still suggests they attend Mass together or participate in Catholic holidays. She thinks that is something all parents should try to do, even when their children are adults. “I think, even after kids are married, parents should still suggest they pray or invite them to pray and participate in events at the church,” Carmona said. Carmona also helps outside the church, taking donated clothes to people in need, cooking for waste workers, among other tasks. Providing advice for mothers ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday (May 9), Carmona recommends they pray and try and to attend Mass daily. “Try to go to Mass every day so that you remain close to God,” she said. “That’s where you’ll find comfort and peace.”

The modern iteration of Mother’s Day honoring mothers, motherhood and others in mothering roles began in the United States in the last century. Anna Jarvis is considered the “mother” of America’s Mother’s Day holiday. She championed the campaign that led to a presidential proclamation declaring the second Sunday of May “a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” Prior to her death, Jarvis, in a dramatic turnabout campaigned to abolish the holiday, the Encyclopedia Britannica tells us. Mercenary “profiteers,” she felt had perverted the spirit of Mother’s Day by commercializing it. More than a century later, it’s still regarded on a commercial scale. The holiday “has become just an excuse for increased sales of cards and flowers,” Susan Hines-Brigger wrote in an essay published May 12, 2020 in St. Anthony Messenger. The magazine’s executive editor sought to personally reconnect with the true spirit of the holiday. She recounted how she transformatively recaptured it in her essay, “Mother’s Day; What Does it Really Mean?” and how she stays focused on it. Her tactic -- HinesBrigger restates a famous phrase, “What would Jesus do?” As a mom, she says to herself instead, “What would his (Jesus’s) mother do?” The heavenly mother is an exemplar for daughters and their mothers who uniquely share a trait – both are capable of being mothers. With the true spirit of Mother’s Day and Christ’s mother in mind, ideas for celebrating our moms apply equally to moms celebrating their relationship with their own offspring. To start with, make time (regularly, not just on Mother’s Day) to spend quality moments together in person if possible, if not, then virtually or by phone. Avoid taking mom for granted. Make a habit of thinking about her consciously and translate thoughts into caring, meaningful actions, including making frequent phone calls and looking after her. She’s Mom all year, not only on the second Sunday in May. Explore ideas that are creative and special, unconstrained by conventional limits when considering ideas for a gift that is truly personal. The Internet is rife with unique, do-it-yourself Mother’s Day gift ideas. The same applies to moms and their own progeny. Be generous with the time spent together to discover what the kids need and want and how they’re feeling. Hear their hopes and dreams and regularly remind them how precious, special, unique and important each one is. An incidental benefit -- caring moms build equity in gratifying and joyous Mother’s Day commemorations for a lifetime. Mother’s Day is absolutely about loving and being loved.

a conmemoración del Cinco de Mayo en Kansas City ha tenido un significado especial este año, con la entrega del reconocimiento Ohtli a la investigadora y médica mexicana Barbara Pastrana Pahud del hospital Children´s Mercy de esta ciudad, por su labor en la lucha contra COVID-19. La tarde del 5 de mayo de 2021 tuve el privilegio de entregar a la doctora Pahud la más alta distinción que el Gobierno de México otorga desde hace 25 años a personas de origen mexicano que residen en el exterior. En náhuatl Ohtli significa sendero: hace referencia al camino que se crea hacia el progreso, como lo ha hecho la doctora Pahud como profesora, médica, especialista en salud pública y directora de Investigación sobre Enfermedades Infecciosas en el Hospital Children´s Mercy. Originaria de Ciudad de México, esta investigadora ha permanecido cerca de los habitantes de Kansas City, particularmente los más vulnerables, cuando llevó a cabo en 2020 la tercera fase de las pruebas clínicas de la vacuna de Astra-Zeneca en esta región del país y, en el presente realiza investigación científica para facilitar la vacuna contra COVID-19 a niñas y niños. La Dra. Pahud ha dedicado su tiempo con generosidad para informar a nuestra comunidad, como en enero pasado durante el Diálogo Comunitario virtual del consulado para hablar de la importancia de vacunarse y de la seguridad de las inmunizaciones contra COVID-19. Estos días alrededor del 5 de mayo, sólo seis de las casi 160 Representaciones de México en el Exterior, incluido el consulado en Kansas City, habremos entregado igual número de reconocimientos Ohtli a personas o instituciones por sus esfuerzos contra esa enfermedad. he commemoration of Cinco de Mayo in T Kansas City has had a special meaning this year, with the presentation of the Ohtli award to

the Mexican researcher and physician Dr. Barbara Pastrana Pahud from Children’s Mercy Kansas City, for her work in the fight against COVID-19. On the afternoon of May 5th, 2021, I had the privilege of presenting Dr. Pahud with the highest distinction that the Government of Mexico has awarded for the past 25 years to people of Mexican origin residing abroad. In Nahuatl Ohtli means “inroad”: it refers to the pathway that is created towards progress, as Dr. Pahud has done as a professor, physician, public health specialist and director of Research on Infectious Diseases at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Originally from Mexico City, this researcher has remained close to Kansas Citians, particularly the most vulnerable, when she oversaw in 2020 the third phase of the clinical trials of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine in this part of the country. Currently she is conducting scientific research for a COVID-19 vaccine for children. Dr. Pahud has generously dedicated her time to inform our community, as she did last January during the Consulate’s Virtual Community Dialogue, to discuss the importance of getting vaccinated and the safety of immunizations against COVID-19. Today and in the coming days, around May the 5th, only six Embassies and Consulates of Mexico, including the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City, out of almost 160 Mexican Representations abroad, will have presented an equal number of Ohtli Awards to people or institutions for their efforts against this disease. The Ohtli awarded to Barbara Pastrana Pahud reinforces our country’s bond with its communities abroad and is proof that their contributions to the prosperity of the United States are found in all aspects of our lives: agricultural workers, roofers, gardeners, cooks and construction workers, to the top female researchers, scientists, military personnel and, yes, Oscar winners. n dato y una conclusión: en 2020, el cantante más escuchado del planeta en internet fue Bad Bunny. Su álbum, YHLQMDLG, en el que todas las canciones están en español, fue el más reproducido en Spotify, la plataforma de reproducción de audio. Así que no es delirante decir que el año de la pandemia fue, también, el año en el que el español dominó el mundo de la música. Algo se ha transformado desde que el reguetón, un género eminentemente caribeño y latinoamericano, se ha consolidado en la música internacional: los artistas ya no tienen que cantar en inglés para tener éxito global. El español basta y sobra. Un grupo de artistas que insistieron en hacer música en su propio idioma han superado las fronteras hispanoparlantes. Es un cambio importante que, quienes hablamos este idioma, no debemos dejar de celebrar. Con la elección del español, estos artistas están haciendo una declaración que nos hace más visibles. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, el puertorriqueño de 27 años que es mejor conocido como Bad Bunny, tuvo más de 8.300 millones de streams o reproducciones en 2020 en Spotify. Superó a los cuatro artistas que le siguieron: Drake, J Balvin (otro músico que ha optado por el español), el rapero Juice

WRLD y The Weeknd, el cantante estelar en el Super Bowl. Su exitoso YHLQMDLG —que el propio Bad Bunny definió como “el disco de reguetón que se merecía el reguetón”— fue reproducido en la plataforma por más de 3.300 millones de personas. Aquí debo detenerme y hacer una breve nota para la Real Academia de la Lengua Española: ¿Cuándo van a incluir la palabra streaming en su diccionario? Aunque es un anglicismo, es una palabra clara y fácil de entender en esta era digital, mucho más sencilla que “emisión” o “transmisión en directo”, como algunos expertos recomiendan. Sí, mejor streaming, más cortito y preciso, aunque suene a espanglish. Y es que si algo nos ha enseñado también el reguetón es a apreciar las modificaciones del español y sus mezclas inevitables con el inglés. El título del álbum de Bad Bunny significa “Yo Hago Lo Que Me Da La Gana”. Y eso es lo que hace este artista. La letra de su música es directa, desafiante, muchas veces golpea, no le preocupa adornarla con lujos gramaticales ni con eufemismos y está hipersexualizada. Pero tiene el irremplazable valor de recoger el lenguaje, los ritmos y la actitud de la gente que lo rodea. “De que hay algo especial, hay algo especial”, dijo sobre el español caribeño

Me siento muy afortunado de ser cantautor y hacer música en este momento de la historia”. El actual éxito de Camilo y Bad Bunny, entre muchos más, en el mercado de Estados Unidos y del resto del mundo no se dio casualmente. Los artistas latinos llevan décadas empujando por crear sus propios espacios y promoviendo sus ritmos e historias en su propio idioma. Y ahora ya no nos sorprende ver a Shakira, a J Balvin y a Jennifer López cantar en inglés y en español en el Super Bowl, como hicieron en 2020; o ver a Romeo Santos llenar

en 2019 el estadio de los Yankees de Nueva York con bachata y tener más ingresos que la banda U2 en el mismo lugar; o escuchar un dueto de Rosalía con Billie Eilish cantando “Lo vas a olvidar”. Inolvidable. El cambio ha sido despacito. La ya famosísima canción “Despacito”, interpretada por Luis Fonsi y Daddy Yankee, fue la tercera más escuchada en Spotify en 2017. Se convirtió en un referente cultural. Pero en el segundo lugar estuvo la misma canción en inglés, que incluía a Justin Bieber. Mucho ha cambiado en cuatro años: ya no es necesario traducir al inglés. Lo nuevo ahora es que las canciones de Bad Bunny, por ejemplo, son prácticamente intraducibles al inglés —“Ante’ tú me pichaba’, ahora yo picheo [...] Una malcriá’ como Nairobi”, dice la letra de “Yo perreo sola”— y, lo más importante, es que no hay ningún intento por suavizarlas, anglicanizarlas y hacerlas mas accesibles para el mercado planetario.
