afaela “Lali” Garcia, a longtime activist and political organizer for the Hispanic community, died June 9, according to multiple news outlets. She was 93. Known as “Queen Bee” by many, Garcia was a political pioneer in the Kansas City area’s Latino community. In 1968, she helped organize the Westside Citizens Democratic Club, which became a launching pad for former Latino elected officials such as I. Pat Rios and Paul Rojas, the first Latino elected officials at the county and state levels. Garcia also founded the political club La Raza and worked the polls every Election Day for 50-plus years. She also was heavily involved with Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI), most recently serving as a board member. “Throughout the years, Lali’s civic and political involvement ensured that the Latino community was granted equitable resources,” GCI said in a social media post. Acting Chief Executive Officer Beto Lopez remembers Garcia as a pioneer not only for the Latino community but also for women in leadership roles. “She could not take no for an answer and fought for every opportunity she could for the Hispanic community

he Biden administration announced Monday (June 14) that it will speed up the process of issuing temporary work permits and deportation relief to some immigrants who are crime victims while their visa cases are pending, multiple media outlets reported. The change will benefit immigrants who have applied for the U visa, a program with a backlog of nearly 269,000 applicants. To qualify for this type of visa, applicants must be victims of domestic violence, trafficking or other serious crimes. Certain family members of approved applicants also may request visas. However, Clara Reyes, who also is the newspaper’s editor, never imagined it would last this long. “Every Thursday, I thought, ‘That’s it. We’re done,’” Clara recalled. From its conception, Reyes knew the newspaper’s mission would be to bridge cultures and explore Hispanic culture in English and Spanish. Gradually, Dos Mundos grew to be considered one of the Midwest’s most important Hispanic newspapers, giving a hand in growing many of the area’s Hispanic organizations and businesses. “Businesses realized the Hispanic community was a valuable target market,” Reyes said. In 2005, the National Association of Hispanic Publishers named Clara Reyes as the 2005 Latina Publisher of the Year. Dos Mundos also received the Lifetime Achievement Award. After a challenging year marked by a pandemic that continues to disrupt lives worldwide, Dos Mundos has continued serving the community, bringing the most relevant information to its readers. We pray for her family and thank God for blessing us with her presence. May she forever rest in peace.” Lopez hopes the community remembers Garcia as a leader by example. “Someone can say they’re (a) leader and they tell you what to do,” he said. “She was really a service leader. She led by example. Anytime the community needed anything, she was the first one to volunteer. Unconditional service leadership is what she taught people and she should always be remembered for it.”

But the benefits enjoyed by modern families and society from fatherhood’s contemporary province are valuable and more crucial than ever. Fathers’ affection and increased family involvement help promote children’s social and emotional development, suggests research across families from all ethnic backgrounds, reports the American Psychological Association. It empowers kids to develop a sense of their place in the world, which encourages healthy social, emotional and cognitive development and functioning. And kids with strong, loving, engaged fathers are less likely to suffer from behavioral problems or substance abuse. Not everyone’s dominant father figure is a biological male parent. He may be a step-parent, uncle or other extended family member, teacher, counselor, coach, faith leader, friend or neighbor. Regardless, those of us who’ve benefitted from the dependable, loving, supportive guidance of an affectionate father figure will mark Sunday with a grateful heart. June 20 is the third Sunday in June, designated as Father’s Day, a holiday honoring the men who welcomed and embraced the responsibilities of fatherhood. They deserve to be remembered and celebrated for their sacrifices, their devotion to family, the life lessons they taught, their patience, the honorable and loving example they set, the talents and passions they shared and their appreciation of the sacred privilege of caring for their children. They help shape tomorrow’s leaders. May young men who will one day be fathers look to those admirable men with whom they have a paternal bond and learn from them the art of fatherhood. Despite that expectations are ever-changing, and that today’s dads face daunting challenges, including having to compete harder for their kids’ time and attention, their role has never been more demanding. Focus less on your relationships with things and more on your relationships with your kids, advises University of Michigan professor, Regina Morantz-Sanchez. It takes dedication, patience and constant effort to be a good parent, and it can be challenging. Not everyone’s cut out to raise a child. As baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs famously observed, “Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.” We salute all the men who are special enough to be a dad. Under the new policy, the government will make faster decisions about whether to grant four-year work permits to immigrants waiting for U visa determinations. “This bona fide determination process will allow U visa petitioners to work and remain safely in the United States while they provide valuable support to law enforcement to detect, investigate or prosecute the serious crimes they have survived or witnessed,” said Tracy Renaud, acting USCIS director, in a statement. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement the move would both help victims and promote public safety. “These are individuals who have come forward to help law enforcement keep us all safe, but who are in need of a measure of protection for themselves, as well,” Mayorkas said.

he Indian government has reported thousands of cases of black fungus over the past few months, according to multiple media outlets. Known in the medical community as mucormycosis, black fungus is a serious fungal infection. According to Healthline, it occurs when the immune system is weakened from health conditions or illness, generally appearing in people with skin or respiratory infections. When black fungus appears as a respiratory infection, the symptoms include coughing, a fever and nasal congestion. When it appears as a skin infection, the symptoms include blisters, a fever, redness, tenderness and blackened skin tissue. Black fungus results from exposure to mucormyete molds. Infections can result from breathing affected mold spores or by being cut or burned. It is not contagious. Mucormycosis, however, can spread to different parts of the body, according to the Indian Health Ministry. “Treatment involves surgically removing all dead and infected tissue,” the Indian Health Ministry states, as quoted by The Times of India. “In some patients, this may result in loss of (the) upper jaw or sometimes even the eye. Cure may also involve a 4-6 week course of intravenous anti-fungal therapy. Since it affects various parts of the body, treatment requires a team of microbiologists, internal medicine specialists, intensivist neurologists, ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialists, ophthalmologists, dentists, surgeons and others.” According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mucormycosis is rare, but the exact number of cases in America is difficult to determine because there is no national study of black fungus. “Population-based incidence estimates for mucormycosis were obtained from laboratory surveillance in the San Francisco Bay area during 1992-1993 and suggested a yearly rate of 1.7 cases per 1 million population,” the CDC states. According to research done in India, people with COVID-19, diabetics, steroid users, cancer patients and the recipients of organ transplants are more susceptible to infection than the rest of the population.

afaela “Lali” Garcia, 93, of Kansas City, MO passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at her home surrounded by R family. Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Thursday,

June 17, at Redemptorist Church, 3333 Broadway, Kansas City, MO. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 16, 5:00 p.m. at the church where the rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lali’s name to the Guadalupe Center, Inc., 1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez, for a scholarship fund that will be established in her memory. Lali was born October 24, 1927, in Kansas City, KS, where she was raised and lived until she married Jesse Garcia in 1951. The couple moved to Kansas City, MO and were married 54 years before his death in 2005. Lali was a member of Redemptorist Church for more than 60 years.

Lali retired as a Supervisor from Artex Mfg./Jostens, Inc. in 1987 after 31 years of service. Retirement gave her the opportunity to focus on her ambition to serve her community by making it a more equal and just environment for all. She has volunteered at the Guadalupe Center, Inc. in various capacities over the last 46 years, including serving on the Board of Directors and three terms as the Board President. Serving at the Center was only the beginning for Lali. She knew that change would not come for the Kansas City Hispanic community until they organized and voted for elected officials who would advocate for them at every level of government. Recognizing this, Lali and her team founded the La Raza Political Club in 1989. Under her leadership, La Raza worked to register new voters for each election, ensuring a seat at the table for the Hispanic community in Kansas City. Lali held the Guadalupe Center and La Raza Political Club close to her heart because she knew they would be there to help her family and her community for generations to come. She also served in a variety of other roles serving her community. To name a few, she was a member of the Union Cultural Mexicana Ladies Auxiliary, a volunteer at Casa Feliz Senior Center, and Board Member for the Ethics, Human Relations, and Citizens Complaints Commission. She was also appointed to the Guadalajara Sister City Commission as well as the Port Authority Board of Commissioners, and she has served on the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast Committee and the Black & Brown Coalition. She was appointed as a Missouri Squire in 2004 and she was also a proud member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine – Guadalupana Society. Lali was a clear example of what it meant to serve others. It was never about herself, but what she could do for you. Lali is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse; son, Nicholas Garcia I; parents, Alicia and Ramon Reyes, Sr., sisters, Terri Jones, and Josephine Medina; brother Raymond Reyes, Jr., and many other loving relatives and friends. Survivors include daughters, Julia Palmer, and Lisa Aquino (Manuel); 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren. Lali’s maternal reach stretched out to so many. That could be from her loving arms to a stern look and strong advice if you needed it. She cherished all her titles throughout life: wife, mother, grandmother, friend, mentor, colleague, and the undeniable Queen Bee.

n día te despiertas y eres viejo. U—Rodrigo Así no más, sin aviso. Es abrumador. García, citando a su padre, Gabriel García Márquez

“De esta no salimos”, le pronosticó Mercedes a su hijo Rodrigo. “No come y no se quiere levantar. Ya no es el mismo”. El escritor Gabriel García Márquez, o Gabo, como es conocido casi universalmente, llevaba dos días en la cama por lo que más tarde se diagnosticó como una neumonía. Era el preludio de su muerte. Cuando uno creía que ya no se podía leer ni saber nada más del Nobel de literatura colombiano —quien murió en Ciudad de México en 2014 a los 87 años— de pronto llegó a mis manos el extraordinario libro del cineasta Rodrigo García, uno de los dos hijos del escritor. Gabo y Mercedes: Una despedida es un libro hermoso y durísimo a la vez, lleno de amor y de anécdotas que sólo puede contar alguien que estuvo muy cerca. Este recuento doloroso sobre la muerte de su padre también es una crónica del fallecimiento de su madre, Mercedes Barcha, quien fue crucial en la vida y obra de Gabo. “Mercedes ha quedado regada en todos mis libros”, dijo alguna vez el escritor. Y ahora, su hijo, relata el proceso de pérdida de ambos. Al final es, como dice el título, la despedida de un hijo a sus padres. Durante los meses de una pandemia, lleno de duelos y pérdidas, este libro es también una forma de consuelo, de hacer las paces con la despedida. Una vez los conocí a los dos. Fue en 2004 en una conferencia de periodistas en Los Cabos, México. Los encontré desayunando en el restaurante del hotel donde se realizaría el evento, me presenté y él me dijo: “Ven, siéntate aquí, a ver si así dejan de molestar”. Se refería a todas las personas que, como yo, paraban a saludar al gran escritor. Sospeché que a Mercedes no le cayó nada bien que me sentara con ellos. Pero aguanté su mirada desaprobatoria y pasamos más de una hora conversando; un poco de periodismo, algo de literatura y hasta de Fidel Castro. “Los que hablan de política son Mercedes y Fidel”, me dijo García Márquez. Y desinteresado con el rumbo de la plática, no dijo más. Pero esos momentos, para mí, fueron de absoluto realismo mágico. Jamás en mi vida me habría imaginado que iba a desayunar con el creador de Macondo, esa ciudad monumental de la literatura mundial. Al terminar el café, caminé con ellos hasta la entrada del evento y luego los perdí para siempre. La despedida de Rodrigo es, de alguna forma, una manera de recuperarlos, él y todos los demás. Rodrigo tomó apuntes mientras su padre moría. Escribió con una honestidad y desconsuelo desbordados. Y hasta con cierta pena. “Me aterra la idea de tomar apuntes, me avergüenzo mientras los escribo, me decepciono cuando los reviso”, escribe Rodrigo. “Lo que hace al asunto emocionalmente turbulento es el hecho de que mi padre sea una persona famosa. Más allá de la necesidad de escribir, en el fondo puede acecharme la tentación de promover mi propia fama en la era de la vulgaridad”. Pero

al final cede. “El tema lo elige a uno”. Una de las partes más dolorosas del libro es cuando el escritor va perdiendo la memoria. Debido a la demencia deja de escribir y de reconocer a sus hijos —“¿Quiénes son esas personas en la habitación de al lado?”— y hasta a Mercedes: “¿Por qué está aquí esa mujer dando órdenes y manejando la casa si no es nada mía?”. Esta paulatina pérdida de la memoria debió haber sido particularmente cruel para quien aseguraba que todo lo que escribía estaba basado en la realidad. “La primera condición del realismo mágico, como su nombre lo indica, es que sea un hecho rigurosamente cierto que, sin embargo, parece fantástico”, dijo alguna vez a la prensa. El momento de la muerte del escritor es narrada por Rodrigo, un guionista y director de cine, con abrumadora precisión y sin ningún efecto dramático. Es lo que es. Nos describe cómo ocurre y da la sensación de que estamos ahí, junto a él, frente a la cama donde yace García Márquez. Y la escena de la incineración es particularmente fuerte. “La imagen del cuerpo de mi padre entrando al horno crematorio es alucinante y anestésica”, reconoce Rodrigo. “Sigue siendo la imagen más indescifrable de mi vida”. Unos años después, en 2020, Rodrigo y su hermano, Gonzalo, también perdieron a su madre. Y Rodrigo describe lo que tantos han sufrido en el mundo durante la pandemia: cómo decirle adiós a quien más quieres a través de un teléfono. Él estaba en Los Ángeles y ella en Ciudad de México. “Como la pandemia no me permitió viajar, la vi con vida por última vez en la pantalla resquebrajada de mi celular, y luego, cinco minutos más tarde, cuando ya se había marchado para siempre”, escribe. “Dos cortos videos en directo, separados por la eternidad”. A pesar de la dureza del tema —la muerte— y la manera hiperrealista de abordarla, hace tiempo que no leía un libro tan franco y físicamente tan agradable. Sus páginas beige son muy gruesas; más que tocarlas dan ganas de acariciarlas y no volver a leer nunca más en un celular o computadora. La cuidada edición con varias fotografías íntimas es, supongo, el gran regalo de la editorial Penguin Random House a la familia y a los lectores del escritor. Este, como me dijo un buen amigo editor, es un libro “valiente”. Y fácilmente pudo no haberse publicado. Rodrigo tenía dudas de hacer público algo tan privado. Al final, lo publica recordando lo que siempre les había dicho su padre: “Cuando esté muerto, hagan lo que quieran”. Se trata, como escribió Rodrigo, de “una de las vidas más venturosas y privilegiadas jamás vividas por un latinoamericano”. Por eso, entre otras cosas, lo extrañamos tanto y por eso este libro, que rescata varios instantes inéditos de su vida, es tan especial. Es, sin duda, el retrato más humano que he leído sobre Gabo. Fue como tenerlo al lado y escucharlo otra vez.

Belen succeeds Michael Padow, who was part of the founding team of educators who brought the Cristo Rey model to Kansas City in 2006. “Steve is passionate about urban education,” Cristo Rey President John O’Connor stated in a press release. “He has deep roots in the Kansas City community and has dedicated 31 years of his career to delivering excellence in the classroom. Steve is a natural leader, a man of great faith, and experienced in developing and implementing educational programs.” A native of Kansas City, Missouri’s Westside area, Belen studied at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School. He later attended Bishop Hogan High School. “It means a lot to me that I came from the Westside, so hopefully, I can serve as a role model that, if I can do it, anybody can do it,” he said. As a principal, Belen seeks to increase the advance placement courses available for students and create an associate’s degree program — all to make sure students are ready for college and their future careers. “As principal, it’s very important that we service all our children, to make sure that every child is successful, making sure that we ignite their dreams and we foster their hopes and we make their aspirations become a reality for them,” Belen said. Belen worked for the Kansas City Public Schools for 30 years. He worked as instructional coach at the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. Belen also trained and mentored new teachers, coordinated data analysis and modeled “best teaching” practices across the district. Later, he moved into administration at Paseo Academy and, later, at East and Northeast high schools. According to Cristo Rey’s press release, Belen has designed staff development, created professional development plans for teachers and authored the Turn Around Plan for state monitoring of educational improvement at Northeast. In 2019, Belen joined the Cristo Rey faculty as a biology teacher, distinguishing himself as a rigorous teacher. he new documentary “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It” offers a rare glimpse into Rita the person, rather than Rita the legend. And that was the intent, said director Mariem Perez Riera. The film had its world premiere in January at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Ahead of its June 18 release in theaters, Dos Mundos spoke with Perez Riera, who also produced and edited the film, about the process behind bringing Moreno’s story to the big screen*. Dos Mundos: How did this project come to be and how did you get involved in it? Mariem Perez Riera: Brent Miller, who’s the producer of “One Day at a Time,” was finishing a documentary on Norman Lear when he met Rita on the set of “One Day at a Time” as a producer; and so, he couldn’t believe that nobody had made a documentary on her and he’s the one who wanted (to do it) and decided to make a documentary on her and talked to the people at PBS American Masters to make it. And I came into the project because I pitched an idea for it and I was chosen.

DM: If you don’t mind me asking, what was the idea you pitched? MPR: For me, it was important to show Rita, the human being, Rita behind the cameras, the person with insecurities, the person who can drive to set, who wears a wig, … because if you don’t know her and you only see her in front of the cameras, you see this glamorous woman who has won so many awards and you don’t necessarily know that she’s (a) human being like everybody else and I wanted to show that. To me, that was very important.

Para mí, eso era muy importante. DM: ¿Cómo logra mostrar la grandiosidad de Rita en la pantalla? MPR: La seguí durante todo un año y supongo que poco a poco se fue abriendo más a mí. Pero para mí, era importante no que el documental fuera un showreel, sino verla realmente como un ser humano y ella también quería eso, así que creo que lo hizo más fácil cuando quería que ella estuviera sin maquillaje, o cuando le hacía preguntas difíciles que ella necesitaba responder porque ambas sabíamos que queríamos hacer un documental que fuera más (sobre) alguien que es un ser humano con altibajos. Eso era importante para todos nosotros. DM: ¿Cómo lograste que respondiera esas preguntas difíciles y más personales? MPR: Creo que tiene que ver también con que hiciera esas preguntas desde mi perspectiva, por lo que he pasado, así como una mujer en Hollywood, en Los Ángeles, por lo que mis preguntas fueron preguntas que (le permitieron) para contar su historia, porque su historia es la historia de tantas mujeres. También es mi historia. Es la historia de tantas mujeres latinas. Es la historia de tantos inmigrantes, de personas que están tratando de seguir su pasión y poder hacer lo que quieren hacer en los Estados Unidos y se encuentran con tantos prejuicios, acoso e inseguridad debido a cómo nos perciben. Entonces las preguntas vinieron de mi corazón, vinieron de mi vulnerabilidad y creo que eso es lo que la hizo abrirse aún más porque sabía que era importante para ella contar realmente su historia para inspirar a otros. … Con suerte, su historia traerá algo de luz a mucha gente.

DM: How do you go about showing encompassing Rita’s grandness on screen? MPR: I followed her for an entire year, and I guess little by little, she was opening up more to me. But for me, it was important not to have the documentary be a show reel but to really see her as a human being and she wanted that as well, so I think it made it easier whenever I wanted her to be without makeup, or whenever I would ask her tough questions that she needed to answer them because we both knew that we wanted to make a documentary that was more (about) *Esta entrevista fue editada por brevedad y DM: Si no le importa que le pregunte, ¿cuál fue someone who is a human being with ups and claridad. la idea que presentó? MPR: I think it has to do (with) also because I asked those questions from my perspective, from what I’ve gone through as well as a woman in Hollywood, in L.A., and so my questions were questions that (allowed) her to tell her story, because her story is the story

of so many women. It’s my story as well. It’s the story of so many Latinx women. It’s the story of so many immigrants, of people who are trying to follow their passion and to be able to do what they want to do in the United States and encounter so much prejudice, harassment, insecurity because of how we’re perceived. Hemos recibido oficialmente la noticia de que el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS) ha publicado nuevas actualizaciones de políticas en su Manual de Políticas que beneficiarán a todos los latinos e inmigrantes que buscan una nueva vida en los Estados Unidos. Los cambios, que giran en torno a los temas de solicitud de evidencia adicional y aviso de intención de denegación, y documentos de autorización de empleo, han tenido lugar “para eliminar las políticas que no promueven el acceso al sistema de inmigración legal”, dijo el Secretario de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro N. Mayorkas. The changes, which revolve around request for evidence and notice of intent to deny, and employment authorization documents subjects, have come to happen “to eliminate policies that fail to promote access to the legal immigration system,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. Here are the updates: Requests for Evidence (RFE) and Notices of Intent to Deny (NOID) USCIS is returning to the adjudicative principles of a June 2013 memo that instructed agency officers to issue an RFE or NOID when additional evidence could potentially demonstrate eligibility for an immigration benefit. As part of the updated RFE and NOID policy, USCIS is rescinding a July 2018 memo that permitted agency officers to deny certain immigration benefit requests instead of first issuing an RFE or NOID. In general, a USCIS officer will issue an RFE or NOID when the officer determines additional information or explanation may potentially establish eligibility for an immigration benefit. Employment Authorization Documents Updated policy guidance will increase the current one-year validity period on both initial and renewal EADs to two years for certain adjustment of status applicants. Increasing the validity period on EADs for certain adjustment applicants is expected to reduce the number of employment authorization requests USCIS receives and allow the agency to shift limited resources to other priority areas. Regarding the matter, Acting USCIS Director Tracy Renaud said that “these policy measures are consistent with the Biden-Harris administration’s priorities to eliminate unnecessary barriers to our nation’s legal immigration system and reduce burdens on noncitizens who may be eligible for immigration benefits.” According to Renaud, the USCIS is committed to promoting policies and procedures that ensure they operate in a fair, efficient, and humane manner that reflects America’s heritage as a land of opportunity for those who seek it.
