analysis, reported by The Kansas City Star. Over the past 14 days, most states have seen the number of cases decline, but Missouri has had a 72% increase. Lisa Cox, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services spokeswoman, told The Star there are several counties experiencing an increase in infections. According to the Times analysis, Missouri counties account for 13 of the top 25 counties nationwide with the highest rate of new cases. Most were in rural areas, but Joplin was included on the list. The health department is encouraging vaccination, Cox said. “We are working in more targeted efforts engaging businesses/employers, schools and churches to provide vaccination opportunities in their communities,” she told the Star. “We are also engaged in a targeted and aggressive state

Navarro educates through music esde pequeño, Fernando Navarro amaba la música. Navarro aprendió a tocar la guitarra y el piano solo. by himself. Music education is not prominent in public schools in his native Mexico. Later, he discovered his other passion: teaching. Born and raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Navarro has found a way to combine both passions as a music teacher for Kansas City International Academy (KCIA) in Kansas City, Missouri. “I knew I was never going to leave a mark in music, but I can do that as a teacher,” he said. “Right now, I’m leaving a mark on my students through music.” Navarro moved to the United States after he got married. His wife is American and grew up in central Missouri, so they figured they would try living on this side of the border. “If I didn’t like it, we would’ve probably gone back (to Mexico),” he said. That did not happen. While in college to pursue his degree in music composition, Navarro started giving piano lessons. That was his start

Manuel, mi esposo; su familia; Becky Jaramillo; su marido; y Héctor Barreto estuvieron entre las personas que me animaron a hacerlo. Cuando empezamos con el periódico bilingüe, la gente se sorprendió. El periódico era bilingüe porque pensé que teníamos que informar a nuestros representantes sobre lo que necesitábamos como hispanos. Ahora, los estudiantes que quieren aprender español lo utilizan como herramienta de conocimiento. Después de 40 años, puedo decir que no esperaba esta respuesta abrumadora de toda la gente en el área de Kansas City. Gracias a mi personal y al apoyo de la gente, hemos ganado premios. Hemos conocido gente. Y lo más importante, hemos ayudado a nuestra comunidad. Estos 40 años son un gran logro para toda la familia de Reyes Media. A pesar de los grandes desafíos, todavía estamos aquí. Para celebrar nuestro 40 aniversario, quiero agradecer a todo nuestro personal, diseñadores, escritores y personas que trabajan para Dos Mundos. access to. The idea of starting a newspaper came into my head. I started Dos Mundos to inform our community and have better communication among Hispanics. Manuel, my husband; his family; Becky Jaramillo; her husband; and Hector Barreto were among the people who encouraged me to do it. When we started with the bilingual newspaper, people were surprised. The newspaper was bilingual because I thought that we needed to let our representatives know about what we needed as Hispanics. Now, students who want to learn Spanish use it as a tool of knowledge. After 40 years, I can say I was not expecting this overwhelming response from all the people in the Kansas City area. Thanks to my staff and people’s support, we have won awards. We have met people. And most importantly, we have helped our community. These 40 years are a big achievement for all the Reyes Media family. Despite big challenges, we are still here. To celebrate our 40th anniversary, I want to thank all our staff, designers, writers and people who work for Dos Mundos. Every week, they work as hard as they can to deliver the paper you are reading. In addition to the Dos Mundos staff, I want to thank our community. I love it that, week after week, you are there to support us. Without you, this dream would not be possible. It is extremely satisfying to see the support we have from you. Thanks for everything. ith the return of scorching summer W temperatures, it’s time to revisit safety protocols for preventing hot car

Animals locked in vehicles this time of year can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just 15 minutes, PETA warns. Take action if you see a child, older adult or pet alone in a hot car, advises the #HotCarsKill social media campaign. If the car’s occupants – people or pets – aren’t conscious or are showing other signs of distress, call 911 and provide the vehicle’s make and model, and the state and number on the license plate. Then locate a witness nearby who can back up your assessment of the emergency and find a way into the vehicle. Open it and wait for emergency first responders. Anyone – people or pets – overcome by heat “should be carefully moved to a cool, shaded location when possible.” Note that Kansas law legally protects Good Samaritans who break into vehicles to save overheating occupants who are unconscious or in distress. Missouri law provides immunity from civil and criminal liability for animal control or law enforcement officers, firefighters or bystanders who rescue “an animal in a motor vehicle causing exposure to extreme heat or cold.” If the hot vehicle’s occupant is conscious, call 911, then reach out to nearby shops and ask them to page the car’s owner. If the owner can’t be found, wait with the vehicle for help to arrive, continuing to monitor the condition of the person or pet trapped inside. The occurrence of people and pets suffering illness or death because they were left in a hot car is a significant public health problem, warn healthcare professionals. But the greatest tragedy of vehicular heatstroke deaths and illness is that they’re preventable.

He understands many of his students’ experiences of coming to a different country not knowing the language, though he was an adult when he went through something similar. “Seeing students get better at the language and graduating (middle school) and succeeding fills me with a lot of pride,” he said. Navarro has finished his master’s degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages. And he is on his way to completing a certificate to become a principal. “God willing, the next step is to get the certification to be superintendent,” Navarro said. Navarro still makes music in his free time and is working on his second instrumentalonly album, he said. Still, education ended up becoming his one true passion. “My goal as a teacher is making everyone feel a part of the culture here,” he said. “I know sometimes it’s hard to feel like that, but we gotta be honest, we’re all part of the culture once we’re here. It doesn’t matter where you come from or why you came here.”

el 28 de junio al 1 de julio se llevará a cabo el Primer Encuentro de Comunidades Mexicanas LGBT+ en el Exterior, con la participación de personas expertas, organizaciones aliadas y activistas de más de 40 ciudades en Estados Unidos, Canadá, Brasil, Colombia, Honduras, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Venezuela y del anfitrión México. Este encuentro busca hacer visible las labores cotidianas de promoción y protección integral de derechos que realizan las Representaciones de México en el Exterior para todas las personas mexicanas, reforzando nuestro mensaje contra toda forma de discriminación en el marco del Mes del Orgullo LGBT+. Para hacer efectiva esta estrategia de vinculación comunitaria y de protección consular, los trabajos virtuales de este encuentro tratarán temas relativos a salud, activismo, educación y finanzas, y servicios consulares con enfoque en la atención a la comunidad LGBT+, incluyendo el impacto de la pandemia, así como el intercambio de buenas prácticas que favorecen el empoderamiento y disfrute pleno de derechos. l día en el que la vicepresidenta estadounidense, Kamala Harris, llegó a Guatemala y le dijo a los centroamericanos que pensaban migrar: “no vengan”, miles de ellos cruzaron sin autorización la frontera de México hacia Estados Unidos. Esto revela un claro problema, que acaso será uno de los mayores desafíos del gobierno de Joe Biden y su vicepresidenta: la manera de abordar la permanente crisis migratoria y las diferencias entre lo que dicen y lo que hacen.

Después de cuatro años de políticas crueles en la frontera con Donald Trump en la presidencia, ahora la Casa Blanca parece estar en una encrucijada: por un lado, envía un claro mensaje contrario a la migración y, por otro, comienza a recibir a más menores y familias en el país. Así, Estados Unidos está enviando dos mensajes al mismo tiempo que son contradictorios: no vengan y sí vengan. Y los inmigrantes sólo están escuchando uno. En mayo de este año fueron detenidas 180.034 personas que pretendía cruzar la frontera sur de Estados Unidos. La mayoría de ellas (el 62 por ciento) fueron deportadas de inmediato y regresadas a México bajo una ley de emergencia sanitaria. Pero otras se quedaron. La nueva política del gobierno de Biden es no deportar a los niños que cruzan solos la frontera. En mayo entraron 10.765 menores sin sus padres y en abril fueron 13.940. También, algunas familias se han

El caso de Harris no es el único. Cuando me quise ir de México a Estados Unidos nadie me dijo: “no vengas”. Al contrario. Varios amigos estadounidenses me apoyaron. Esta es mi minihistoria. A principios de los años ochenta,

México era un país sumamente autoritario y represivo. No había democracia, el presidente era elegido por dedazo y había censura directa a los periodistas. Como un reportero inexperto y joven sólo tenía dos opciones: me quedaba y luchaba por nuevos espacios (como tantos valientemente lo hicieron) o me iba. Y me fui. Por muchas razones. Estados Unidos me abrió las puertas cuando más lo necesitaba. Y aquí estoy, como otros inmigrantes o hijos de inmigrantes. Además de mi caso y el de Harris, hay otro ejemplo en el gobierno de Biden: Alejandro Mayorkas, el secretario de Seguridad Nacional. Mayorkas salió a defender las palabras de la vicepresidenta. “Fueron unas declaraciones cargadas de humanidad”, dijo. “No vengan, es peligroso. La frontera no está abierta”. nacido en La Habana, hijo de padre cubano y madre rumana con familiares que huyeron del nazismo en Europa. ¿Qué hubiera pasado si en esa época alguien le hubiera dicho a la familia Mayorkas que la frontera no estaba abierta? La familia de la vicepresidenta Harris y del secretario Mayorkas, que ahora dicen que la frontera está cerrada, pudieron entrar legalmente a Estados Unidos. Y al hacerlo cambiaron la historia de este país: ella es la primera mujer y la primera persona negra en llegar a la vicepresidencia, y él es el primer latino en ese puesto. Hay muchos niños centroamericanos que legítimamente se pueden preguntar: si ellos lo lograron, ¿por qué yo no? Es ese mantra tan estadounidense —que cualquier puede lograr lo que se proponga si hace un gran esfuerzo— el que choca con las políticas migratorias en la frontera. Pero los inmigrantes centroamericanos — quienes son verdaderos expertos en las leyes migratorias de Estados Unidos y que se pasan

semanas o meses planeando su entrada al país— han aprendido a leer entre líneas y no están escuchando las palabras de los políticos ni la contradicción entre sus historias personales y sus discursos desde el gobierno. Lo que están viendo es que niños y familias centroamericanas están cruzando la frontera y que a muchos no los están deportando. A muchos les están abriendo sus procesos de asilo y les dan refugio temporal. Y por eso están cruzando en grandes números. La actitud de muchos inmigrantes parece ser: Trump ya no está, vamos a tratar de cruzar ahora con Biden. Aunque sea peligroso. Aunque no sea autorizado. Por supuesto, lo ideal es que hubiera un proceso burocrático, efectivo y seguro, para hacer una solicitud de entrada desde tu país hacia Estados Unidos y así evitar a coyotes, robos y violaciones. Pero ese camino no existe. Y los políticos deberían dar menos discursos y ponerse a trabajar para crear una vía legal, ordenada para el país y segura para las personas. Eso sería lo “cargado de humanidad”, como dice Mayorkas. Para muchos hondureños, guatemaltecos y salvadoreños, es mucho más arriesgado quedarse en sus naciones que cruzar México y atravesar el río Bravo. Entiendo que el mensaje oficial del nuevo gobierno es “no vengan”. Pero la historia de protección y esperanza de Estados Unidos hacia los que vienen huyendo de la violencia, las pandillas, la represión, el hambre y el cambio climático es mucho más poderosa. Quizás lo mejor sería mirar nuestras propias historias para entender la migración. La mía me ha llevado a creer que las fronteras deberían ser más humanas. No me atrevo a decirle a nadie que no venga. Los políticos con poder y visibilidad podrían hacer lo mismo.
