Y siempre estaba ocupado, ya fuera como Eagle Scout o como soldado especializado en ingeniería de combate para la Reserva del Ejército. “Tenía tanta confianza”, dijo su madre, Adriana Pecina. “Tenía mucho talento y era guapo y era un gran bailarín y era bueno en el fútbol y la música. Yet the morning before he was set to go to training in 2016, he committed suicide. He was 18. “That was the worst day of our lives,” Pecina said. Pecina said the family never realized he was struggling as much as he was. She compares her son’s situation to mallard ducks swimming in the water, but their little feet are pedaling hard to stay afloat. “That was Uzielito,” she said. “He had this presence of strength and

Silva Sevilla asked her daughter one day why she wore long sleeves when it was hot. While doing so, she lifted her daughter’s sleeves and saw the marks. Her daughter was self-harming. “It was very shocking,” Silva Sevilla said. “I just didn’t understand why she would do something like that. She was always calm and didn’t get into trouble.” Silva Sevilla also was scared for Samantha. “I thought she might end her life,” she said.

confidence and like nothing … (was) going to tear him down, but he was fighting for his life.” Even through their pain, Pecina said the family decided not to hide the cause of death. “We decided when we did the obituary that we needed to tell the truth, that the cause of death was suicide, so we put that in the obituary,” she said. Suicide and other mental health illnesses like depression are still considered “taboo” topics among Latinos, particularly among the older generations. A lot of Pecina’s friends and family members questioned the need to disclose the cause of Uziel’s passing. “We were, like, we had to tell the truth,” Pecina said. “If this could save lives, we’re OK with that.” Serious mental illness among Latinos has increased in recent years. Around 17.2% of Latino students in grades 9-12 seriously considered suicide in 2018. Around 8.9% of students attempted suicide, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. Since Uziel’s passing, Pecina and her husband have dedicated themselves to raising awareness about suicide. They volunteer for walks or fundraising events for any organizations dedicated to raising awareness about suicide. Over the years since then, Pecina recounted that she has had people approach her to share their stories. They also have made a promise to help those who might be struggling. “We’ve had several people in our family and friends’ network, that we have made a promise to them: If you’re feeling hopeless, if you’re feeling like you want to take your life, call us,” she said. They have received calls during the day and even in the middle of the night, and Pecina and her husband have helped them, taking them to the emergency room. The four young musicians had perished 25 years earlier at the posh Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Kansas City. In one of the nation’s deadliest structural disasters, two skywalks crowded with gaily animated people had collapsed. Alcala, Carmona, Galvan and Scurlock had just arrived with Teresa Cuevas and Rachael Galvan, the other members of Mariachi Estrella de Topeka. They’d been hired to entertain at a Fuller Brush Co. convention being held at the hotel. The musicians entered the hotel from the parking garage onto the second-floor skywalk toting their instruments -- two violins, two trumpets, a large stringed guitarron, a guitar and a vihuela. They were inching through the crush of guests when the fourth-floor skywalk buckled and crashed onto the second-floor skywalk, hurling both to the lobby level. Only two Estrellas survived - Cuevas and Rachael Galvan. Hospitalized, they missed the July 20, 1981 funerals, attended by 850 mourners. The memorial service was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church where the Estrellas had first played as a group on Sundays. Jaramillo, who’s now pastor of two KCK parishes was the natural choice to officiate. The Estrellas had played at his first Mass after ordination. He was related to two of the deceased Estrellas and friends of two others. Their funeral was Jaramillo’s first as a priest.

“As their music lives on, so much more the memory of what they stood for will never be forgotten,” Jaramillo recalled saying. His words proved to be prescient. Forty years later, their story lives on. As one of the nation’s first all-female mariachi bands, they were trailblazers. The Downtown Topeka Foundation will unveil a statue of Cuevas this fall. She died in 2013 at age 93 having “inspired generations to keep the music playing,” her granddaughter said. In 2010, the story of Mariachi Estrella was the subject of a film, Mariachi Estrella. The brief, yet remarkable careers of the musicians, “marred by profound loss, has made Mariachi Estrella de Topeka almost mythic figures,” the Lawrence Journal-World reported. “The inspiring thing about it is their legend continues to this day, and people continue to be inspired.” In 2006, the Topeka Performing Arts Center dedicated a new statue on its front lawn. The eight-foot tall bronze memorial honors the Latina mariachi group. The memorial’s inscription reads, in part, “In 1977, seven women from Kansas banded together to share with America the traditions, culture and music of Mexico – and Mariachi Estrella de Topeka was born … They lived on through mariachi members left behind … This … tribute ensures that the story and the music of these seven women will forever be heard.” Kansas City and the Hyatt skywalk collapse survivors and family and friends of the 114 people killed will gather on July 17 to remember. Meanwhile, in Florida, relatives and friends of those injured and killed in the Champlain Towers South collapse will wait and wonder. What caused the 40-year-old beachfront condo to fail? Was it flaws in the design? Environmental corrosion? Or was human error the cause as it was at the Hyatt? Tall buildings elsewhere in the world have survived for millennia, according to data from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. They were constructed without modern engineering know-how and equipment. Why then can’t we construct buildings that endure? We owe it to Connie Alcala, Dolores Carmona, Delores Galvan, Linda Scurlock and the other 110 Hyatt fatalities and 216 people who sustained injuries and the hapless residents of Champlain Towers to erect safe structures that last.

esde diciembre de 2020, los inmigrantes han vuelto a solicitar activamente la protección temporal contra la deportación y el permiso de trabajo renovable que otorga el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, mejor conocido como DACA. Lamentablemente, el proceso ha sido lento desde entonces, y hasta ahora sólo se ha aprobado el 1.5% de las solicitudes presentadas por primera vez. En este sentido, el tiempo es un factor influyente: el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS) está tardando entre cinco y seis meses en aprobar las nuevas peticiones.

Fue en 2017 cuando la administración de Donald Trump dejó de aceptar nuevas aplicaciones del programa DACA. Posteriormente, el anuncio fue anulado por un tribunal y se abrió la puerta para que miles de inmigrantes emitan su petición de DACA por primera vez y soliciten la protección después de este tiempo. A su vez, el USCIS ha declarado que hay varios motivos que están provocando el retraso. La pandemia, la mayor demanda y la capacidad limitada son algunas de las razones más importantes. ¿Cómo puedes aplicar para el DACA? ¿Eres un inmigrante en los Estados Unidos que quiere solicitar los beneficios y protecciones que otorga el programa DACA? ince December 2020, immigrants have been actively applying again for temporary protection from deportation and a renewable work permit that is granted by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Unfortunately, the process has been slow since then, and only 1.5% of first-time applications have been approved so far. In this regard, time is an influential factor: the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) takes about five to six months to issue an approval letter. Donald Trump’s administration stopped

accepting first-time applications for the DACA program in 2017. Subsequently, the announcement was annulled by a court and the door was open for thousands of immigrants to issue their first-time DACA petition and apply for protection. In return, USCIS has stated that there are several important motives that are causing the backlog. The pandemic, greater demand, and limited capacity are all very important reasons according to the government agency. How can you apply for DACA? Are you an immigrant in the U.S. that wants to apply for the benefits and protections granted by the DACA program? First, you must: • Have been under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; • Arrived in the U.S. before turning 16; • Have continuously lived in the US since June 15, 2007, up to the present time; • Were physically present in the US on June 15, 2012; • Have no lawful status (like a visa or green card); • Are currently in school, have graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, have obtained a general education development (GED) certificate, or are an honor-

ably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; and • Have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, or three or more other misdemeanors, and do not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety. Psychologist sees link between COVID, mental illness in youth By Chara Psicóloga ve vínculo entre el COVID y las enfermedades mentales en la juventud

l COVID-19 está afectando la salud mental de niños y adolescentes, afirma el psicólogo clínico y educativo Karem Sánchez. Según los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, aproximadamente 4.4 millones de niños de 3 a 17 años han sido diagnosticados con ansiedad y aproximadamente 1.9 millones de niños han sido diagnosticados con depresión. Karem Sánchez, psicóloga clínica y educativa, atribuye la cantidad de casos en parte a los cambios en el estilo de vida causados por la pandemia del COVID-19. “Necesitamos considerar que los niños y adolescentes están en desarrollo, y un cambio en sus hábitos y rutinas como la pandemia puede hacerlos vulnerables”, dijo Sánchez. A u n q u e los niños son diferentes y es posible que no muestren todos los mismos síntomas, o los mismos niveles de síntomas, todavía hay algunas señales de advertencia que los padres deben buscar para ayudar a determinar si sus hijos sufren de ansiedad y/o depresión, dijo Sánchez. “Los padres deben estar alertas a cualquier cambio en el comportamiento o la personalidad”, dijo. “Todos los padres conocen a sus hijos, y si notan algún cambio en la forma en que actúan o en cómo se comportan que no es normal para ellos, deben estar alerta”. Según Sánchez, los síntomas en los 7 años o menos incluyen falta de interés en las actividades que antes disfrutaban y fatiga. En las edades de 7 a 12, los síntomas incluyen agresividad, apatía, baja autoestima, falta de atención en la escuela y las actividades escolares y cambios de comportamiento. En los adolescentes, los cambios de comportamiento incluyen cambios de humor y aumento de la irritabilidad, agresividad y abuso de alcohol y drogas. “Algo (que) ... es muy importante (recordar) es que la depresión no se trata de estar triste; … la depresión se puede manifestar de diferentes maneras y los padres deben estar alerta a los… (cambios) en el comportamiento de sus hijos”, dijo Sánchez.

In ages 7-12, the symptoms include aggressiveness, apathy, low self-esteem, a lack of attention in school and school activities, and behavioral changes. In teens, the changes in behavior include mood swings, and increased irritability, aggressiveness, and alcohol and drug abuse. “Something (that) … is very important (to remember) is that depression is not about being sad; … depression can be shown in different ways and parents should be alert to their children’s … (changes) in behavior,” Sanchez said.

La importancia de cuestionar al presidente By Jorge Ramos

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, da una conferencia de prensa, conocida como la Mañanera, para hablar de temas de interés en su gobierno y responder a preguntas de periodistas. Y, cuando un presidente habla, a los periodistas nos toca cuestionar lo que dice. Así es el periodismo y así es la democracia. López Obrador es un presidente elegido legítimamente por más de 30 millones de votantes y, al contrario de lo que han sugerido algunas figuras que piden su renuncia, deberá gobernar todos los días de su sexenio. (Para nuestra tranquilidad, ya ha dicho que entregará el poder al final de su término, como dice la ley, en 2024). Pero el hecho de que sea el presidente legítimo no implica que sea un líder efectivo, que lo haga todo bien y que los ciudadanos y periodistas no le podamos pedir información y hacerle preguntas incómodas. En teoría, esa es la idea detrás de la Mañanera: un espacio de escrutinio y discusión abierta y sin censura, que ningún presidente mexicano había promovido. Esa intención es celebrable. Pero para funcionar con ese propósito, la Mañanera no debe desvirtuarse. Para que sirva como un verdadero ejercicio democrático de transparencia y rendición de cuentas, el presidente debe apoyarse en datos (incluso los de su propio gobierno), debe entender la labor de la prensa y evitar usar esa plataforma para hacer propaganda o señalar a opositores. Si no lo hace, el sentido de las Mañaneras se puede perder. Y sería una lástima. Debo decir que no soy de los que creen que la democracia en México está en peligro con López Obrador. Al contrario, creo que ahora hay voces e instituciones que no permitirían un regreso al sistema autoritario que sufrimos de 1929 a 2000. Pero para que la democracia esté viva hay que cuestionar al jefe de Estado y a todos aquellos que tienen poder. Y la Mañanera debería ser el lugar natural en donde eso suceda. Ojalá que el presidente lo entienda. La principal función social del periodista —además de reportar la realidad de manera justa y fidedigna— es cuestionar a los poderosos. Por eso cuando participé en la Mañanera del lunes de esta semana le dije al presidente que la labor de los reporteros era ser contrapoder. Y que eso significaba cuestionarlo a él como lo hicimos con los presidentes anteriores. No sé si le gustó lo que le dije, pero me dio la palabra abiertamente y pude preguntar con absoluta libertad. López Obrador, al estar tan expuesto a los medios —ha realizado más de 600 conferencias de prensa en menos de 3 años— sus palabras se reproducen mucho más que las de otros presidentes. En comparación, su antecesor, el expresidente Enrique Peña Nieto, dio pocas conferencias de prensa durante su gobierno, muy controladas y por momentos incómodas. AMLO, en cambio, ha dado mucho más acceso a la prensa y eso es muy positivo. El problema es que López Obrador sigue la tradición del viejo presidencialismo mexicano y también utiliza las Mañaneras para imponer su agenda a los medios, hacer propaganda oficial, denostar a sus críticos, hostigar a la prensa independiente (recientemente inauguró el segmento semanal “Quién es quién en las mentiras” para señalar a la “prensa más injusta, la más distante, la más lejana al pueblo”) y para apabullar las ideas que no coinciden con las suyas. Además, es muy popular —mantiene un 58 por ciento de aprobación—. No existe un sólo líder de la oposición en México que tenga esa misma presencia mediática. Tiene un estilo muy peculiar de gobernar —haciendo constantes referencias históricas— y es el eje central de la política mexicana. Ante eso, los periodistas sólo debemos tener una respuesta: más periodismo. Hay que revisar todos los datos que da —AMLO suele tener “otros datos” cuando no le gusta lo que oye— y cuestionar a fondo sus políticas y proyectos, como la controversial creación del Tren Maya, la construcción del nuevo aeropuerto en una zona poco apropiada, la dependencia de las anticuadas industrias eléctrica y petrolera y su cuestionable estrategia de seguridad para combatir la violencia. Hasta ahora, su gobierno ha sido poco claro en esos puntos cruciales y no se han aprovechado las Mañaneras para esclarecer los vacíos de información. Quizás tampoco los periodistas hemos aprovechado lo suficiente ese espacio. Con la violencia y la terrible cantidad de muertos desde que es presidente —por el crimen y la pandemia— ha sido especialmente opaco. Y eso le fui a preguntar en la conferencia de prensa, igual que lo hice en 2019 y 2020. El gobierno de López Obrador está en camino a convertirse en el

más violento de la historia moderna de México, con más de 86.000 homicidios dolosos desde que llegó a la presidencia. Estas son cifras oficiales y no hay resultados. Fuera de la burbuja del Palacio Nacional no existe la “paz” y “tranquilidad” que pregona. Están asesinando a alrededor de 100 mexicanos al día. Esto es un fracaso de su política de “abrazos, no balazos”. En diciembre de 2018 (su primer mes como presidente) hubo 2892 homicidios dolosos y en mayo de 2021 hubo 2963. “No hay cambio”, le dije en la Mañanera. Pero él insistió en que ha habido avances. “Ya no hay masacres en el país”, me aseguró. Pero le recordé de las matanzas recientes en Zacatecas y en Aguililla. “Esos son enfrentamientos entre bandas”, replicó, “pero no es el Estado, que antes era el principal violador de los derechos humanos”. Tampoco nos pusimos de acuerdo sobre el mal manejo de la pandemia. México es el cuarto país del mundo con más muertos por el coronavirus, a pesar de ser el décimo con más población. Cifras del gobierno indican que poco más de 229.000 personas han muerto por el coronavirus en el país. Pero las muertes excesivas asociadas a la covid son más de 351.000, también según números de su gobierno. ¿Cómo se puede decir que “vamos bien”, cuando hay tantos muertos? Para responder, AMLO dijo que yo estaba desinformado, a pesar de que le cité los datos de su propia página gubernamental. Y luego me presentó una gráfica de la Universidad Johns Hopkins en la que México aparecía en ese momento en el lugar 19 del mundo por muertes de covid divididas por millón de habitantes. La prestigiosa Universidad Johns Hopkins es una fuente de información confiable, pero la gráfica destacada por el presidente no cuenta las muertes en exceso contabilizadas por el gobierno y la lista no se refería al número total de muertes (en donde México lamentablemente ocupa el cuarto lugar mundial) sino al índice de mortalidad por población. Más allá de las distintas estadísticas y metodologías, si algo es indudable es que México ha tenido demasiadas muertes y el presidente debe asumir su responsabilidad. A pesar de que no coincidimos en muchas cosas, agradezco genuinamente la oportunidad de debatir y dialogar con el presidente de manera directa. Es difícil encontrar otro país en el mundo donde haya un ejercicio así. Y debemos aplaudir que ese espacio continúe, pero de la manera en la que sea de verdad un lugar de información veraz y no uno para avanzar intereses políticos ni atacar a críticos o periodistas. Los reporteros podemos y debemos usar ese espacio para hacer nuestras preguntas. Y el presidente, en lugar de limitarse a “otros datos”, debería aceptar el cuestionamiento de la prensa en lugar de atacarla. Yo le haría una propuesta al presidente: eliminar de la Mañanera su segmento de ataques a la prensa y abrirse a la posibilidad de dar entrevistas a periodistas independientes y no vinculados a su movimiento político. La entrevista es un formato donde él no controlaría el micrófono y donde, creo, habría un intercambio más natural de información e ideas. Los periodistas le hemos cedido el espacio de la Mañanera al presidente y debemos recuperarlo. Yo ya he ido tres veces y espero regresar pronto.

OVID, vaccines and Delta are three words that could very well encompass the uncertainty, hope and challenges that we have lived through and continue to face since the beginning of the pandemic, although in July 2021 there is a radical difference compared to the days of March 2020.

Hay que evitar el pánico y los contagios. Desde mayo pasado, cuando –por cierto- se suspendieron ordenanzas sobre uso de cubrebocas, los casos positivos a COVID-19 casi se han multiplicado por cinco en Missouri y por cuatro en Kansas y cada vez son más jóvenes quienes enferman.

We have to avoid panic and infections. Since last May, when -by the way- ordinances on the use of face masks were suspended, positive cases of COVID-19 have almost multiplied by five in Missouri and by four in Kansas, and infections are increasing among younger population.

Si te sientes estresado, agobiado y reconoces algunos de esos síntomas, es hora de preocuparte y solucionar lo que realmente es amenazante hoy.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/ Kansas City, Kansas proposed Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is $196,560. These funds will be distributed to nonprofit organizations seeking to alleviate homelessness in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Eligible applicants will need to submit documentation of tax-exempt status as described in Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, a letter of good standing as a nonprofit corporation from the state of Kansas, certificate of liability insurance, and a bi-annual certificate of compliance. oisés, que prefirió no dar su nombre completo, nunca se dio cuenta de que estaba experimentando depresión hasta después de salir de ella. Todo empezó con un perro. Cuando estaba en octavo grado, su familia consiguió un perro. “Fue mi primer perro y me enamoré de (él)”, dijo Moisés. Poco después, sin embargo, la familia tuvo que regalar al perro. oises, who preferred not to give out his M full name, never figured out he was experiencing depression until after he got out of it.

It all started with a dog. When he was an eighth-grader, his family got a dog. “It was my first dog and I fell in love with (him),” Moises said. Soon after, however, the family had to give away the dog. Although Moises did not cry when the dog left, he became sadder and would cry for no reason after some time had passed. “I wouldn’t really know why, but I would just be really sad and then I would start crying for my mom and tell her it was my fault that we gave the dog away because I didn’t dedicate enough time (to him),” he said. Moises continued to have sudden bouts of sadness and crying for roughly the next two years, he recounted. He also moved himself away from his friends. At his lowest point, during those two years, Moises admits he even considered taking his life. “I felt ashamed,” he said. “I still feel shame because that’s not something you should go through.” What helped him not go through with it was thinking of his mom. He has two siblings, one of them autistic, and at that time his dad was going through a rough patch, so Moises could not leave his mother dealing with everything alone. At 21, Moises still cannot fully explain how he got out of that depression, which he did not label as that until he was past it. “It came out of nowhere,” he said. “I don’t know how to explain it, but I just started thinking about it and realizing that (the dog leaving) was not my fault.” Moises talked to his mother a lot and that helped, he said. He also got away from people who were not helping him get better. Although Moises knows not all people experience depression the same way, he suggests talking to people, be they friends, family members or even a professional. “Understand that talking to people that care about you about your problems is not a burden to them,” he said. “Get some help. It’s easy to say, but it’s also the best thing to do. I should’ve probably gotten help, I would’ve probably gotten (out of it) way earlier.”

The next day, as her daughter went to school, Silva Sevilla looked in her daughter’s room and took away any pointy objects she could find. She also found Samantha’s tablet and figured out she was being bullied by two students at school. “I told my husband I was going in to (the) school to talk to the counselor,” Silva Sevilla said. “I told him: ‘I don’t care if my English isn’t good, I’ll make myself understood.’” And she did. Silva Sevilla acted quickly. Within days, Samantha was seeing a psychologist. It took months, but Samantha got better. However, just as the family was celebrating Samantha’s success, Silva Sevilla’s husband got diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure for it. How long a person lives depends on how the disease develops. “Sadly, my husband got hit with a really severe case and he died two years later,” she said. That got Silva Sevilla aworried about Samantha’s mental health. “I really thought she was going to regress,” she said. But instead, Samantha approached her mother and asked her to schedule a time with the psychologist. Within the last year, Silva Sevilla also lost her brother and mother in the span of six months. Both deaths impacted the family a lot and throughout all of it, Samantha has seen her psychologist. Even Silva Sevilla started seeing one for the past two months. Samantha is 17 and a senior in college. “I feel proud of her for how she’s been handling everything,” Silva Sevilla said. Silva Sevilla advises parents to be aware of their kids. “I hope parents pay more attention to their kids, so they can notice any changes and can help them,” she said.
