Activities that commemorate Labor Day include “parades, picnics and parties,” the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL’s) website states. Here are a few other facts you might not know about this annual holiday, scheduled to be observed Sept. 6 this year: *First celebrations: New York City held the first commemoration of Labor Day on Sept. 5, 1882; however, it was on a Tuesday, not a Monday, according to the DOL. From 1 to 9 p.m., around 25,000 union members and their families reportedly filled a park and celebrated the day. By 1894, 24 states had made Labor Day a holiday, the DOL states. *Federal holiday: As the DOL’s website also states, Labor Day was finally deemed a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, when President Cleveland signed a law designating it to be observed the first Monday in September. *Progressive ideas: Labor Day became a federal holiday nearly 20 years before the Labor Department was founded and the holiday helped usher in

He joined the department at age 19 as a motorist assist officer. When he was 21, he became a police officer. “To lose such a bright man with such a future ahead of him. You have to see pictures of Freddie and he always had a smile on his face,” Donchez told KSHB-TV (Channel 41). “He loved what he was doing. Unemployed workers in Missouri won’t be affected. Along with the unemployed in 22 other states, jobless Missourians lost their federal unemployment benefits in June and July. The governors of those states cut off the federal benefits because businesses had trouble filling vacant positions. The Biden administration has said it won’t extend the federal unemployment payments beyond Labor Day. There exists a nationwide labor shortage across numerous sectors and includes about 800,000 unfilled local, state and federal positions. Commercially, the labor shortage is seriously impacting harvesting, packaging, processing, production, stocking, supplying and transporting. Desperate to keep their respective enterprises going and deliver essential services, public and private sector employers are getting creative to fill vacant jobs. Many are offering signing bonuses; others are upping wages, sweetening incentive programs, or adding retirement and education packages. Here locally, those include government agencies; hospitals; hotels; post offices; prisons; public transit; restaurants; retail stores; school districts; the trucking industry; and Waste Management, a waste disposal, trash collection and recycling services provider. As federal unemployment payments end September 6, one-time, sign-on bonuses will unquestionably incentivize employment. But over the long term, the surest path to full employment is closing the gap between wages and the ever-rising cost of living. According to MarketWatch.com, the most recent report from the Case-Shiller Home Price Index showed that home prices this year are up 14.6 percent nationally. Here locally, the average rent for an apartment rose five percent over last year, RentCafe. com reported. And between July 2020 and July 2021, the price of eggs, fish, meat and poultry rose 5.9 percent. While there’s still a lot of uncertainty, this could be a watershed moment for the American labor market. Bringing the cost of living more in line with employee wages, especially for the working class would offer one positive legacy of the Covid-19 era.

After the pain and loss 2020 brought, Lopez-Tinoco sees this year’s celebration as part of a new era to help the community heal together. “For me, 2020 was a year of reflection and hope,” she said. “Reflection of appreciating what and who I have in my life and hope that all this we are experiencing will pass. Over the past 18 months, we have experienced terrible pain and loss, … but it’s about being resilient – having Fiesta Hispana is part of that.” Planning this year’s Fiesta Hispana in less than four months with limited funds and committee participation was challenging, Lopez-Tinoco acknowledged. Because it had been more than 18 months since the committee’s last fundraising event, financial support from the community was essential to make the festival a reality, she said. Those who have attended the festival might find it looking different in some ways because of COVID, Lopez-Tinoco said. For instance, there will be two sites for individuals who want to get vaccinated. There also will be masks and hand sanitizer available for all to use at every entrance and scattered throughout the plaza. “I promise you that, in planning this event, our top priority was making this a safe event,” she said. “We started out by revising the booth layout within Barney Allis Plaza to eliminate previously congested areas, so that attendees could socially distance and feel comfortable with their surroundings. We will be reminding individuals to social distance, wash their hands, wear masks if within 6 feet of each other and to get vaccinated.” The Greater Kansas City National Hispanic Heritage Committee invites the community to celebrate an entertainment-filled weekend that also includes activities such as the official “El Grito” ceremony. Facilitated by Alfonso Navarro Bernacchi of the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City, Missouri, the ceremony is an Independence Day commemoration. e suponía que 2021 iba a ser el año en que íbamos a controlar el coronavirus con las vacunas y que este sería un verano de alegría en Estados Unidos. Debido a sus enormes posibilidades económicas, se pudieron comprar millones de vacunas para toda la población. Pero no contábamos con nuestra propia ignorancia y terquedad: hay mucha gente que se puede vacunar y no lo hace. También hay muchas personas que han decidido no usar mascarillas. Y hoy la pandemia ha resurgido, con especial dureza entre los no vacunados. No hace mucho, a principios de junio, el presidente Joe Biden sonaba muy optimista. “Estados Unidos va a tener un verano dramáticamente distinto al que tuvimos el año pasado”, dijo en un discurso desde la Casa Blanca. “Un verano de libertad. Un verano alegre. Un verano de reuniones y celebraciones. Un verano que se merece este país después del oscuro invierno que todos tuvimos que soportar”. El optimismo de Biden se sentía en todo Estados Unidos. Se publicaron fotografías y reportajes del regreso de la vida nocturna y en las calles en algunas ciudades, como Nueva York. Vimos escenas de cientos de personas bailando en clubes, reunidas en bares y restaurantes o apretujadas en el asiento trasero de un Uber. Todos sonriendo y sin mascarillas. Es increíble que, a pesar de que sobran las vacunas en Estados Unidos, en agosto de este año tuvimos más nuevos casos de covid que en el mismo el año pasado. El 10 de agosto de 2020, por ejemplo, se reportaron 47.173 nuevos casos. El 10 de agosto de este año los nuevos casos fueron 162.091. Como dijo el doctor Anthony Fauci, el principal asesor de salud del presidente Biden, que se trata de “una pandemia entre los no vacunados”. ¿Cuál es el problema? Que sólo poco más del 50 por ciento de la población de Estados Unidos se ha inoculado (y sólo el 63 por ciento de los mayores de 18 años).

Puede ser sencillo de explicar cuando la pandemia se extiende en un país que no tiene acceso a las vacunas. Pero es imperdonable que Estados Unidos —la principal potencia económica a nivel mundial que acaba de dar la aprobación total a la vacuna de Pfizer-BioNTech— esté sufriendo una nueva ola de la pandemia debido a gente que no se quiere vacunar. La desinformación mata. Las redes sociales están plagadas de mentiras y de absurdos sobre las vacunas que no tienen validez científica ni evidencia. No es cierto que te van a meter un chip en el cuerpo con la vacuna. No es cierto que la vacuna es más peligrosa que la enfermedad. No es cierto que el coronavirus no afecta a los más jóvenes. No es cierto que esta sea una conspiración internacional para controlar nuestras mentes. Y muchas personas que creyeron estas teorías falsas han terminado contagiadas e intubadas en las salas de emergencia de los hospitales del país. Sólo las vacunas, el uso de cubrebocas y la distancia social, entre otras medidas, pueden evitar la propagación de esta enfermedad. Eso es lo que ha revelado la ciencia. “El uso de mascarillas debe ser parte de una estrategia para suprimir la transmisión [del coronavirus] y salvar vidas”, asegura la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Pero yendo contra las más básicas prácticas de higiene y salud pública en medio de una pandemia, Ron DeSantis, el gobernador de Florida, uno de los estados más afectados por el nuevo brote, firmó una orden ejecutiva que le prohíbe a las escuelas del estado obligar a sus estudiantes el uso de mascarillas. “El gobierno federal no tiene ningún derecho de decirle a los padres que sus hijos tienen que usar mascarillas todos los días si quieren ir a clases presenciales”, dijo DeSantis. Las clases en Estados Unidos ya comenzaron y varias escuelas, desafiando al gobernador, están obligando a sus estudiantes a usar mascarillas. Lo mismo ocurre con dos medidas básicas, seguras y fáciles de conseguir en este país, aún en medio de una pandemia que, aunque queríamos, no ha terminado.

person. Running for office never crossed her mind. Then, after becoming a U.S. citizen in 2018, Arroyo got involved in the campaign of Kansas Rep. Susan Ruiz, helping to knock on doors and talking to people. “It actually ended up being a very pleasant experience, talking with voters, because they were normally very eager to meet you or to see you,” she said. “It felt good to know that they felt seen or supported or heard in that moment.” After that, Arroyo started thinking about maybe someday running for office. When her friend suggested she run for a Lenexa City Council seat, Arroyo did not hesitate. During the August primaries, Arroyo — running for the Ward 3 seat — was one of the two candidates to advance to the Nov.

Arroyo said the George Floyd protests of 2020 helped solidified her decision to run during this election cycle. “A lot of it has to do with representation,” she said. “This is something that became clear to me last year, when the city council seemed to struggle having conversations about race and discrimination and systemic oppression during the height of the George Floyd (protests). As a mental health professional who works with anti-racism models in therapy, I can have a better understanding of that, and I think that with the way things are going towards in the future, it’s important that we have more conversations about racism and systemic oppression and race.” Through her background as a mental health professional, Arroyo knows how important the community is for a person’s well-being, she said. “As a therapist I can’t help but notice how much of a person’s well-being is situated in their own community, so I want to bring that awareness and my background … to make mental health-informed decisions and validate the concerns of constituents whenever they speak up about changes that they want to see in the city,” Arroyo said. Arroyo is aware the road ahead is not easy, especially considering that local elections historically do not have huge turnouts. Her focus is trying to get more people to get out and vote on Nov. 3. “We want to focus on turning more people to vote … (in) the general election and this might be people who may have never voted … (in) a local election in the past,” she said. ara el artista local Israel Alejandro García García, el arte siempre ha sido parte de su

vida. Sin que él lo supiera, García creció rodeado de la comunidad de artistas en Los Ángeles. “Realmente no se unió hasta ahora, a medida que soy mayor, me miro retrospectivamente mientras crecía y me doy cuenta de que realmente siempre estuve integrado en una comunidad artística”, dijo. Naturalmente, eso significó que García nunca consideró otro camino en la vida que ser artista, dijo. “Para mí, ser artista es verdaderamente un estilo de vida; es solo quién soy y qué hago. Simplemente no puedo ser otra cosa. No puedo apagar la mente creativa”, dijo. “Estaba destinado a ser eso”. Unbeknownst to him, Garcia grew up surrounded by the artist community in Los Angeles. “It didn’t really come together until now, as I’m older, I retrospectively look at me growing up and realize I was really always embedded in an arts community,” he said. Naturally, that meant that Garcia never considered any other path in life than being an artist, he said. “For me, being an artist is truly a lifestyle; it’s just who I am and what I do. I just can’t be anything else. I can’t turn off the creative mind,” he said. “I was just meant to be that.” Garcia, who relocated in 1997 to the Kansas City area, owns Garcia Squared Contemporary — an art gallery serving Kansas City’s diverse communities — in the Crossroads Arts District. He also is the last artist to be featured as part of ArtsKC’s #WhoNeedsArt campaign. The COVID-19 pandemic affected his work both as an artist and gallery owner because gatherings were cancelled. According to Garcia, art is a social experience that is most effective by experiencing it firsthand. “I think it’s that personal experience where artwork has the largest ability to make change or to make an impact in the viewer’s life,” he said. Originally from Mexico, Garcia was brought to the United States at age 6. That immigrant experience and cultural identity is at the center of his artwork, which he described as “sitespecific installations.” “I create environments,” he said. “I create large pieces that really take the viewer into a narrative that is either trying to explain that narrative further or introduce you to a new narrative.” One of Garcia’s most recent exhibitions, “Bordes Carnosos,” was a mobile, 40-foot red shipping container documenting his take on the immigrant experience. It opened in November 2020 in Kansas City, Missouri’s Northeast area. Now, Garcia is trying to raise some money to move the container to other neighborhoods in the city. Garcia hopes his artwork becomes a safe space to start conversations on cultural identity in an environment rooted in systemic racism and segregation. “I create work because I know it matters to me and it answers questions for myself, and I share it with others because I know it affects them as well,” he said. had strong roots in his community as he was a 2005 graduate of Fort Osage High School and was employed by Olin Winchester Lake City as a primer operator in building 35, 556 wing. Shawn was born in Kansas City, Missouri on Christmas Day 1986 to Albert and Cynthia Tinoco. From that day until the very end, he was an angel in everyone’s life. He was the youngest of four brothers, but he had the biggest personality. Shawn never hesitated to do anything for anyone, even a stranger. Because of his generous heart, his organs will be donated through Midwest Transplant Services. He was the man everyone could depend on to be there in the good times and the bad. But Shawn sure did love the good times! He was so full of life that he could bring a smile or a laugh to anyone around. He especially loved to cause excitement and uproar around his family’s Chiefs/Raiders rivalry. Like his late father, Shawn was a die-hard Royals fan. He is commonly known as the “Field-Runner” at Kauffman Stadium after rushing onto the field following the 2014 ALCS Championship game. There is only one thing that he loved more than his Kansas City Royals and Las Vegas Raiders, and that was his children and family! Shawn was preceded in death by his father, Albert R.
