Las celebraciones anuales de los hispanoamericanos y su historia, contribuciones y cultura comenzaron en 1968 como una celebración de una semana. Veinte años después, se amplió a 31 días y se le cambió el nombre. Las fechas elegidas son significativas. El 15 de septiembre se celebra el Día de la Independencia en cinco países de América Latina: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. El 16 de septiembre marca el Día de la Independencia de México; Chile celebra el Día de la Independencia el 18 de septiembre y Belice el 21 de septiembre. Cada año, durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, los estadounidenses exploran y honran las contribuciones, la cultura y la historia de los hispanoamericanos a través de eventos especiales: demostraciones culinarias, exposiciones,

He started helping the community when he moved to Kansas City, Missouri’s Northeast area, he said. “I joined the neighborhood association, and then, I became president of the association,” Abarca recalled. “I always wanted to do things for the community.” Abarca is U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II’s deputy director. Part of his job involves assisting people in immigration cases, including deportation cases, he said. Abarca also is treasurer of the board for the Kansas City (Missouri) Public Schools. As treasurer, he gets to represent the community and give it a voice, he said. “I try to advocate to be wise with our tax dollars and spend them wisely in the education of our children,” he said. For Abarca, being Latino has had “different meanings through different phases of my life,” he said. But regardless of the changes in meaning, it “also has motivated me to help others and represent the community,” he said. One of the biggest issues the Latino community is facing is a lack of representation, Abarca said. “The Latino population is growing, but representation is not,” he said. “We have to have a stronger presence where decisions are made.” Abarca encourages people to talk to him about the issues they are facing. “I would like to say that people must talk to us (elected officials) and let us know about their problems,” he said. “As a community, the Latino community is humble, but I really want to hear from everyone about the challenges they are facing in the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Schools.” Abarca, who attended Missouri State University in Springfield, has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. He has a master’s degree in occupational safety management with an emphasis in environmental science and is pursuing his doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Missouri, Columbia. His hobbies include boards and commissions and his family. “Whenever I’m not in board meetings, I try to spend time with my family as much time as I can,” he said. “I have a 2-year-old daughter and I let her paint my nails or I enjoy taking her to the park.” Anyone interested in reaching out to Abarca may do so via social media on Twitter @MannyforKC. omorrow is the culmination of Hispanic Heritage Month. The annual celebrations of Hispanic Americans and their history, contributions and culture began in 1968 as a weeklong observance. Twenty years later, it was extended to 31 days and renamed. The dates chosen are significant. Sept 15 is celebrated as Independence Day in five Latin American countries -- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Sept. 16 marks Mexico’s Independence Day; Chile celebrates Independence Day on Sept. 18 and Belize on Sept. 21. Every year, during Hispanic Heritage Month, Americans explore and honor the contributions, culture and history of Hispanic Americans through special events – culinary demonstrations, exhibitions, food tastings, parades, themed movie showings, visual and performing

arts presentations and more. President Lyndon Johnson said when enacting Hispanic Heritage Week, “The people of Hispanic descent are the heirs of missionaries, captains, soldiers and farmers who were motivated by a young spirit of adventure, and a desire to settle freely in a free land.” As Johnson pointed out, Hispanic peoples have been here for centuries. The Spanish explorer, Ponce de León in 1513 landed on what’s now the state of Florida. And, importantly, Hispanics aren’t monolithic. They’re descended from or hail from 33 different Latin American countries, 13 Caribbean countries and Spain. So while Hispanic Heritage Month represents opportunities to bring new awareness and appreciation, the many cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans belong in mainstream American history and culture year-round. According to Pew Research, Hispanics in 2020 accounted for 19 percent of the U.S. population; they’re the single largest ethnic group, and “command over $1 trillion in purchasing power.” Hispanics make up a substantial share of the nation’s workforce and lead across industries and professions. They’re driving labor force growth, according to the U.S. Labor Department. At 29 million strong, Hispanics accounted for 18 percent of the workforce in 2020. They’re astronauts, corporate directors, business owners, judges, physicians, scientists, teachers and more. Given that Hispanic representation in the U.S. is ubiquitous, Hispanic Heritage Month compels us to ask why Hispanics are still visibly missing from the mainstream. Where’s the Hispanic presence in advertising? In movies? On TV? Statistics published in 2020 by the University of California, Los Angeles showed that Hispanics are underrepresented in “nearly every job category … in the entertainment industry.” Among the categories tracked by UCLA are actors; directors; executives; and writers. A 2019 Nielsen study found that overall Hispanic representation on television was a scant 5.5 percent and even less -- 2 percent -- in TV advertisements, according to UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. Hispanic “audiences are certainly craving to see themselves on screen,” observed the creator of Disney’s Diary of a Future President, Ilana Peña. It’s time to paint Hispanics prominently into our national canvas. We can advance toward that goal by effecting significantly greater Hispanic representation in movies, including video platforms such as Netflix; television programming; and televised advertisements. Hispanic Heritage Month is a good time to start.

Workplace raids has been a contentious issue in the immigration debate. Republicans generally favor it as a means of holding employers and undocumented workers who break the law accountable. Democrats argue, however, that workers, not employers, often bear the brunt of the punishment.

APACHULA, Chiapas — Los haitianos siguen llegando a México. Pero lo que quieren, de verdad, es que los dejen llegar a Estados Unidos. Están agotados. Han recorrido muchos países, tramos de selva sin caminos y sin ley después de haber sufrido tragedias acumuladas. La vida se ha ensañado con ellos. Y merecen un respiro. Para llegar a Estados Unidos por México, los haitianos primero tienen que cruzar el río Suchiate, que separa al país de Guatemala. Este río no tiene fama de ser salvaje y aún en época de lluvias permite el paso de miles de inmigrantes. Cruzarlo —en unas balsas hechas rudimentariamente con cámaras de llantas y tablas— cuesta un dólar y medio por persona. Muchos haitianos prefieren atravesarlo de noche y en puntos ciegos. Acabo de estar ahí y junto al río no vi agentes ni policías. Y, cuando aparecían, no impedían a nadie el paso desde Guatemala. El problema llega después, cuando esos mismos migrantes tratan de avanzar por las carreteras. Ahí los están parando y arrestando. Y para subirse a un autobús les piden documentos migratorios para demostrar que están legalmente en el país. México, un país con millones de inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, ahora se ha dado a la vergonzosa labor de detener inmigrantes de otras naciones que solo quieren cruzar por su territorio. Al hacerlo, están violando su derecho de tránsito. México, bajo intensa presión de Estados Unidos, está creando su propio muro. En México hay unos 30.000 haitianos, según le dijo un alto funcionario de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores a The New York Times. Conocí a algunos de ellos en Tapachula. Sus historias suelen ser dolorosas y su llegada a este país viene precedida de atrocidades y recorridos largos. Muchos huyeron de Haití tras el terremoto de 2010 y se asentaron en países sudamericanos, como Brasil y Chile, donde encontraron algunas facilidades migratorias. Pero la falta de oportunidades y los problemas económicos derivados de la pandemia les hizo tomar la dramática y difícil decisión de irse hacia Estados Unidos. Es el caso de Silvio y Sandra, quienes salieron de Haití y llegaron a Chile. Ahí nació su bebé. Cuando cumplió dos meses, iniciaron su travesía hasta México. “Vinimos en un viaje terrestre”, me dijo Silvio, que duró “unos 25 días”. Cuando hablé con ellos la bebé dormía plácidamente, como si no hubiera cruzado medio continente. Un muchacho haitiano que vende agua de maracuyá en el mercado de Tapachula recorrió “como nueve” países antes de llegar a México. Vivió en Sudamérica por un tiempo pero cuando el coronavirus acabó con los trabajos comenzó su camino hacia el norte. Le pregunté si quería llegar a Estados Unidos. “Sí, claro”, me dijo. Varios haitianos hablan de pandillas, delincuencia y malos políticos en su país. Y casi siempre hay historias de muertes. “Un niño mío se murió, mi papá se murió”, me dijo otro hombre, “y entonces yo vine aquí buscando la vida”. También encontré inmigrantes de otros países. Mariana, de Angola, en el suroeste de África, ayuda en el puesto de pollos del mercado de Tapachula. Llegó a México con su mamá desde Brasil. Y me narró con horror cómo vio a “personas muertas” al cruzar el Darién, un peligroso tramo entre Colombia y Panamá que separa Centroamérica de Sudamérica. Mariana tiene la mirada alerta de quien ya ha vivido mucho a pesar de tener solo 16 años. Por el Darién tienen que cruzar muchos haitianos para llegar a México. Pero al llegar aquí su vida no es fácil. Los vi deambular por las calles de esta ciudad, sin rumbo fijo, con niños colgados de las manos y sin dinero para la siguiente comida. Todo lo que tienen lo llevan cargado. Y regresar a Haití, tras el terremoto del pasado agosto que dejó más de 2000 muertos, es impensable. No tienen papeles para vivir legalmente en ningún país fuera de Haití, la burocracia mexicana no se da abasto para registrarlos y muchos de los recién nacidos no pueden conseguir sus actas de nacimiento. Durante mi visita vi a dos bebés que acababan de nacer: tenían nombre pero no documentos. Estos migrantes no existen para nadie.

A las afueras de Tapachula, el padre Cesar Cañaveral hace malabares para alojar a alrededor de 300 refugiados en el albergue Diocesano Belén. Es una labor casi milagrosa. Pero hay que estirar la comida, no hay leche para los niños ni cama para todos. La iglesia, el jardín, el seminario y hasta las oficinas están repletas y sirven de alojamiento por unas semanas para los afortunados que lograron entrar. Cuando me fui del albergue seguían llegando inmigrantes, que hacían una larga fila en la calle con la vaga esperanza de entrar. No tenían nada: ni papeles, ropa, comida o dinero. Solo tenían el testimonio de alguien que les había dicho que ahí quizás les podía ayudar. Esta es la nueva cara de la migración. Estuve en esta ciudad en 2018, cuando las caravanas de centroamericanos pasaban por territorio mexicano en camino hacia Estados Unidos. Para los migrantes era preferible enfrentarse a la crueldad de la era de Donald Trump que lidiar con la violencia, las pandillas, el hambre y el cambio climático en Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador. Luego vendrían venezolanos y cubanos. Ahora son los haitianos. A Haití le ha ido muy mal en la repartición de tragedias.

Además de los terremotos, la violencia lo ha trastocado todo. En julio de este año fue asesinado el presidente Jovenel Moïse, lo que solo ha generado una mayor inestabilidad política. El actor y activista haitiano Jimmy Jean-Louis me comentó que la violencia de las pandillas “lleva ya unos años pero el último año ha sido mucho peor”. Y si a la historia —marcada por dictaduras, crisis y atrocidades naturales— le sumamos que Haití fue la última nación del continente en recibir vacunas contra la covid, hay poco margen para el optimismo. Tapachula ha sido una ciudad extraordinariamente generosa con los inmigrantes. Yo he visto a gente salir de su casa para darle comida y agua a los agradecidos extranjeros. Pero no hay recursos ni lugares suficientes para atender apropiadamente a la nueva ola de inmigrantes haitianos. La fuente de la plaza central ha sido cercada para evitar que los recién llegados la usen para tomar agua y lavarse. Tapachula está desbordada. La ironía es que los haitianos se quieren ir de aquí. En sus planes de vida nunca estuvo el deseo de asentarse en Tapachula. Pero el gobierno mexicano no los deja. Soldados, miembros de la Guardia Nacional y agentes del Instituto Nacional de Migración acechan a los que se echan a andar por las carreteras y tienen autobuses preparados para regresarlos a Tapachula. Y a los que ya no pueden más o tienen peor suerte, repatriarlos “voluntariamente”. Al final, todo esto es inútil. El muro de México, como el de Estados Unidos, tampoco podrá parar a quienes huyen de circunstancias desesperadas. Y poco a poco, o en caravanas, estos inmigrantes haitianos se irán de aquí en su ruta hacia el norte. Cuando lo has perdido todo —hasta el miedo— nada te puede detener.

Mendoza running for JoCo’s WaterOne board

effrey Mendoza ha decidido hacer su parte para mejorar su comunidad. Está postulándose para el puesto 4 del distrito de agua No. 1 del condado de Johnson, Kansas, también conocido como la junta de WaterOne, una empresa de servicios públicos independiente que presta servicios en el área del condado de Johnson desde 1957. “El acceso al agua potable es muy importante para mí”, dijo. “Siento que es un sello distintivo de una comunidad buena y estable”. Originario de la costa este, Mendoza se mudó al área de Kansas City para estudiar derecho en la Universidad de Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). Mientras estudiaba allí, conoció a su esposa. Mendoza is running for Seat 4 of Johnson County, Kansas, Water District No. 1, also known as the WaterOne board, an independent public utility serving the Johnson County area since 1957. “Access to clean water is very important for me,” he said. “I feel like it’s a hallmark of a good and stable community.” Originally from the East Coast, Mendoza moved to the Kansas City area for law school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). While studying there, he met his wife. After graduating from UMKC in 2016, Mendoza served in active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. Mendoza and his family moved back to the area at the end of 2020 once his active-duty service had ended. “(We) decided to come back to this area because this is where we wanted to start a family and raise our children,” he said.

Since moving here, Mendoza immediately started getting involved, meeting community leaders. That is how he stumbled upon the elected position on the water utility board. “This is where I’m going to raise my son, (so) I want to make sure that he’s able to enjoy clean drinking water,” Mendoza said. The best way to ensure that, Mendoza thought, was to join the board, especially after learning the board oversees setting policies for how WaterOne runs. “I felt that, rather than sitting around and waiting for somebody else to fill that position and hope that they’re going to make good decisions, … I thought I’d enter my name in the race and do my part to better serve my community,” he said. Mendoza will face incumbent Bob Reese in the Nov. 2 elections. A big part of his campaign work has been about educating the public about the position and about making sure voters fill out the entire ballot because the position he is running for appears last. “It’s important to go all the way down (on the ballot) because this type of local election is something that can have drastic changes and measures in people’s everyday lifestyle and ability to drink water,” he said. If elected, Mendoza would be the first Latino — and the first person of color — elected to the board. For Mendoza, having that representation at the table is important. “It’s very important that we have our voices heard, so please go out and vote,” he said. “I have the experience in policy drafting and policy enactment, and I’m going to be coming to WaterOne with the right mindset, making sure that my son and all the children of Johnson County can be able to enjoy clean water for their entire lifetime and I want to do it in a sustainable way.” For more information about Mendoza’s platform, visit https://www.jeffreyforwaterone. com/.

During the reception, community altars were unveiled and an art exhibit opened. Kiki Serna, Mattie Rhodes visual arts gallery coordinator, said the reception served to celebrate and support local vendors and artists. That is why the organization offered a spot for two food trucks, local jewelry creators, artists and people from the community bringing art from Mexico, Serna said. The diverse art exhibit features artists who have worked with the organization for a long time while also offering a platform for younger artists. About 15 artists are showcasing their work and putting it out for sale. The community altar exhibit allows people to honor loved ones who have died. Because of so many losses during the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s altar exhibit has already created a big impact in the community through its sense of connection, according to Jenny Mendez, Mattie Rhodes cultural arts director. People have made more impactful and interpersonal altars this year, Mendez said.

Estoy segura que la mayoría de los que recibió el mismo mensaje, creyeron la supuesta rareza del calendario y lo compartieron. Las cadenas de mensajes son tan antiguas como la civilización humana, pero se han vuelto peligrosas para la sociedad, pues mas allá de informar o animar, muchísimas buscan engañar y sacar información personal o bancaria para

perpetrar estafas. Y otras ponen en peligro la salud, como aquella cadena que a principio de la pandemia “aconsejaba” tomar dióxido de cloro. Conocí a un ingeniero que murió de Covid-19 en enero pasado, pero antes de fallecer pruebas médicas confirmaron ingesta de este peligroso químico en su cuerpo. Incluso, él mismo le confesó a su esposa que lo consumía a diario para no contagiarse. Aún su familia se pregunta, cómo una persona tan inteligente le creyó a una cadena de mensajes.
