Although the celebration is significant to the Latin community, what Day of the Dead means depends on the person you ask about it. Recently, Dos Mundos asked some people what the Nov. 1-2 celebration means to them. Here are their answers:

“For me, the Day of the Dead represents the respect we have for death and the love we also have for life. It represents remembering those who have departed from this world to the afterlife, and with great hope, we await their return once a year to have them close to us, so we can offer them what they liked most in this world. “It represents colors, flavors and smells that identify us as Mexicans — one of the most emblematic traditions that we have as a country. Many cultures do not even understand because of their perception of what death is. That’s what Hector Moctezuma the Day of the Dead is for me, because as Mexicans, we never forget those who are gone.” — Hector Moctezuma —

The sweet return of trick-or-treating

l domingo es Halloween. ¿Cómo será la divertida excursión de este año a todo lo deliciosamente macabro? ¿Se podrá salir a pedir dulces? ¿Es seguro? Sí, lo es, según el Dr. Anthony Fauci. El fin de semana pasado, el director del Instituto Nacional de Alergias y Enfermedades Infecciosas anunció a los medios de comunicación: “Este es un momento que a los niños les encanta. Es una parte muy importante del año para los niños ... Salgan y disfruten de Halloween”. Citando la cantidad de personas de 12 años o más que ahora están vacunadas contra el Covid-19 y la disminución del número de casos nuevos, Fauci dijo que pedir dulces debería ser seguro para los niños con algunas precauciones de sentido común. Last weekend, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ director announced to media outlets, “This is a time that children love. It’s a very important part of the year for children … Go out there and enjoy Halloween.” Citing the number of people ages 12 and over now vaccinated against Covid-19 and declining numbers of new cases, Fauci said trick-or-treating should be safe for kids with some common sense precautions. To celebrate safely during this first postpandemic Halloween, HealthyChildren.org recommends sticking to outdoor trick-ortreating; avoiding large numbers of trickor-treaters clustered in limited spaces, such as on front porches and around front doors; taking along a supply of hand sanitizer; accompanying younger kids; handing out only commercially pre-packaged goodies or non-edible treats to trick-or-treaters; and masking up at public indoor Halloween events and activities. There’s a relatively new trend in trickor-treating that’s worth considering. It’s called trunk-or-treating, and it cropped up around six years ago. It involves a group of parents parking their motor vehicles in a school or church parking lot. They festoon their open trunks with Halloween decorations and hand out treats. For parents lacking creativity, DIY know-how or time to come up with a way to transform their car trunks into a suitably spooky tableau, party supply stores sell trick-out-your-trunk kits, and social media abounds with clever ideas. Trunk-ortreating, say experts, eliminates a number of health and safety risks associated with traditional house-to-house trick-or-treating. Kids are less likely to receive goodies from strangers, risk crossing busy streets or get lost. For families who live in areas where houses are fewer and far apart or in unsafe areas, trunk-or-treating offers a reliably secure opportunity to experience a treasured Halloween custom. As public health and infectious disease experts have warned, returning to “normal” after a global pandemic is a process. Transitioning to pre-pandemic life isn’t happening instantly, but we’re making headway in the right direction. Scaring up some traditional Halloween fun for youngsters is an encouraging step. Although altars were always set up in my house, it was never as important as in my friends’ homes. I grew up far from my extended family, only with my parents and my brother. I think this is a tradition passed down mostly from the grandparents, and being away from them kept me from making it a significant celebration in my life. CDC makes COVID-19 booster vaccination recommendations By Chara

os Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) han emitido una recomendación para los receptores de las vacunas contra el COVID de Moderna y Johnson & Johnson con respecto a las vacunas de refuerzo. “Ahora hay recomendaciones de refuerzo para las tres vacunas contra el COVID-19 disponibles en Estados Unidos”, dijo el CDC en un comunicado. “Las personas elegibles pueden elegir qué vacuna recibir como dosis de refuerzo. Algunas personas pueden tener una preferencia por el tipo de vacuna que recibieron originalmente y otras pueden preferir recibir un refuerzo diferente. Las recomendaciones del CDC ahora permiten este tipo de dosificación combinada para las inyecciones de refuerzo”. The government agency claims the three vaccines – Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson – offer high levels of protection. “Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself and reduce the spread of the virus and help prevent new variants from emerging,” the CDC stated. Maria Gonzalez, a Missouri resident, said she is excited about receiving the booster shot. “I truly believe that this is the way to better protect all of us,” Gonzalez said. “The vaccine has kept me and my family safe, and I can’t wait for my booster shot to protect myself, my loved ones and the rest of the society.”

Where he was given a great opportunity to learn so much about machining and the ins and outs of wheel making. After working at Weld for so many years, he then proceeded to work at Advance Auto Parts for a little over 15 years. It may have started off as a part-time job, but his great knowledge of cars and amazing personality working with the customers it

became more of a second home to him. Chuy met his beloved wife, Ana, when he was 17 years old. They started a beautiful loving family that includes oldest, Jesus Jr., Jazmin, Edith, and youngest, Jason. His grandchildren, Emily, Sophia, Julian and Galilea, were his biggest pride and blessing. He is survived by his loving parents, Ramon Radillo (father), Martha Meza (mother), and Martha Luna (stepmother). His siblings, Ramon Jr., Magdalena, Jose A., Graciela and Biviana. Chuy was very close to his wife’s family. Loved and cared very much for his mother-in-law, Carmen Chavez (deceased), along with his brother-in-law’s, sister-in-law’s, nieces and nephews. Chuy will be dearly missed. We invite his friends and loved ones to join his family to celebrate his life on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at McGilley Memorial Chapel-Midtown from 5-7 pm. His urn will be interred on Friday, October 29 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
