“Siempre he sido fan de Kenny y los Eléctricos”, dijo Pérez-Sevilla. “Solía pintar y escuchar su música. He jumped at the opportunity because of the way the band’s music had helped him through bouts of depression. “I always have been a fan of Kenny y los Electricos,” Perez-Sevilla said. “I used to paint and listen to her music. She (frontperson Kenny Aviles) was thousands of kilometers far away, but she helped me when I was feeling down and she didn’t even know it.” Perez-Sevilla and Aviles got to know each other during the coronavirus pandemic. He saw her through livestreams on Facebook. “I started talking to Kenny and her husband Edgar,” he said. “I told them about my paintings and my studio. I told her that I have pictures of all my ‘girls’ (favorite singers), and then, she asked me to send her pictures of my art.” Aviles loved Perez-Sevilla’s art and asked him to paint the art for the band’s latest record. “I honestly thought that it wasn’t going to happen, but one day, Kenny and her husband called me and told me they were ready,” he recalled. “We talked about the idea, I created a sketch and they loved it.” The record, called “Su Majestad” (“Your Majesty”), celebrates 40 years of Kenny y los Electricos. “I will always thank Kenny, because as crazy as it sounds, there are simple things that help people when they are going through a difficult situation,” Perez-Sevilla said. “For me, music has been a lifesaver, an inspiration; and Kenny – without knowing it – was there in my life. Listening to her music was like therapy for me.” After Perez-Sevilla finished the artwork, he got invited to Mexico City for the launch party. “My mom was going through different health issues and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to make, but … (in) the end, it happened and I traveled to Mexico City,” Perez-Sevilla said. Perez-Sevilla also took the original painting with him and gave it to Aviles. “It was a dream come true,” he said. “I never thought it was going to happen. This trip exceeded all the expectations I had. I got to know Kenny and her husband Edgar in person, I got to know a lot of people and I got to be part of the history of one of my favorite singers.” During his visit to Mexico City, Perez-Sevilla attended several events, he said. He attended a Kenny y los Electricos concert and had the opportunity to go out with them to eat and visit places. “I can’t even believe it,” Perez-Sevilla said. “It was a dream come true and I just couldn’t … (express) how excited I was.” Perez encourages people who are going through rough times to seek help and never stop dreaming. “Life and God always surprise you,” he said. “You will see the light of the sun at some point. The disturbing assault at the KCK high school provides further anecdotal evidence supporting what educators have been warning -- violence is on the rise in our K-12 schools. Teachers report breaking up fights; they admit fearing for their own safety. Schools report an upsurge in the number of students caught with guns or other weapons. And school shootings “are on track to surpass their pre-pandemic high,” Education Week wrote in the Nov. 1 edition. So what’s behind this alarming trend? Some researchers attribute it to the stress of the Covid pandemic. Others blame America’s commercialization of violence: regular exposure to violent video games and other violent media content causes kids to think and behave more aggressively, showed the results of a study published last year in JAMA Pediatrics. Some researchers point to the ever more disreputable conduct of adults as the culprit, noting that children learn what they see. Citing “a historic rise in homicides in 2020 and continued bloodshed in 2021,” The Atlantic submitted in a Sept. 29 feature that America is experiencing a “violence wave.” Evidence is ubiquitous. Violent crime, such as murders and aggravated assaults jumped nearly 30 percent in 2020 while property crimes continued a “years-long decline,” according to the FBI. Philip Cook, a Duke University crime expert calls it “a tsunami of lethal violence.” Commercial airline attendants have seen a precipitous uptick in unruly passenger incidents. Some high schools have had to ban chronically disruptive parents from sporting events. Across the country, disagreement over politics, mask and vaccine mandates and school curriculum and school policy increasingly result in verbal and physical assault. Kids are watching us. And they’re absorbing how we handle stress, treat others, occupy our time, express our feelings and engage with our community. Striving to be a positive role model for youngsters is a worthy goal for all adults and an investment in our nation’s future. Even considering the other risk factors for violence in schools and on playgrounds, assiduously demonstrating caring, honesty, kindness, patience, respect and responsibility would help to curb the violence. It will take all of us working together.

Y ese pensamiento mágico ha ocurrido tanto con la pandemia de la COVID-19 como con la violencia que azota a México. En ambos casos, AMLO ha sido un Presidente poco efectivo. No ha podido aterrizar algunas de sus ideas más ambiciosas. Se le escapan las soluciones concretas. Piensa en grande al proponer utopías —ahí está el sueño de la Cuarta Transformación, como le llama a su gestión— pero se atora en la ejecución. Será su gran desafío: un buen gobierno no puede depender de las palabras llenas de buenos deseos sin acciones y resultados tangibles que las acompañen. AMLO llegó a la presidencia en diciembre de 2018 con dos banderas políticas al centro: la lucha contra la corrupción y darle prioridad a los más vulnerables; uno de sus dichos más conocidos es: “por el bien de todos, primero los pobres”. Así que quizás no extrañó a muchos mexicanos cuando López Obrador anunció ante el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU que México propondrá un plan de ayuda a los más necesitados. Su plan mundial de “fraternidad y bienestar”, dijo, tiene como objetivo darle una “vida digna” a los millones de personas en el planeta que sobreviven con menos de dos dólares al día. López Obrador quiere financiar este fondo con una “contribución voluntaria anual del 4 por ciento de sus fortunas a las mil personas más ricas del planeta, aportación similar por parte de mil corporaciones probadas más importantes por su valor en el mercado mundial y cooperación del 0,2 por ciento del PIB de cada uno de los países integrantes del G20”. Buena idea. Pero su discurso, una vez más, tiene el potencial de quedarse en el aire. No será sencillo lograr que capitales privados den su dinero a la ONU o que algún país esté dispuesto a donar parte de su presupuesto sólo porque se lo pidió López Obrador. Son las mismas buenas intenciones que hemos escuchado en México con su estrategia de “abrazos, no balazos” contra la violencia. También es la misma disposición para hablar con la que a veces da declaraciones que pueden llegar a ser desinformadas o peligrosas, como su sugerencia al principio de la pandemia que restó importancia al virus letal: “hay que abrazarse; no pasa nada”, dijo en marzo de 2020. Sí pasó. Y mucho. A pesar de los malabares lingüísticos del gobierno mexicano y de sus estadísticas poco claras, México —el décimo país en población mundial— es hoy la cuarta nación del planeta con más muertes debido a la COVID-19: han fallecido más de 290.000 personas. Y muchas de esas muertes habrían podido evitarse con una respuesta estatal más eficaz. También esa falta de efectividad se ve en su estrategia para detener la violencia. En los casi tres años de su gobierno, México ha sobrepasado la sombría marca de las 100.000 muertes violentas. Hasta septiembre, según cifras oficiales, el número de los homicidios dolosos había alcanzado los 97.532 y se han registrado 2812 feminicidios. Pronto saldrán los números actualizados de octubre del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública, pero si la tendencia de muertes por mes sigue igual que en los últimos años, esa cifra trágica va a aumentar. “Los abrazos no han funcionado”, le reclamó al Presidente un empresario hotelero luego de que murieran hace poco dos personas en una playa de un hotel en Puerto Morelos, un centro turístico cerca de Cancún, después de un enfrentamiento entre bandas de narcotráfico. “Siendo honesto, no se han dedicado los recursos suficientes para controlar la inseguridad”, agregó. Pero el Presidente no parece dispuesto a escuchar. Hasta ahora está aferrado a una estrategia que ha resultado fallida: en 2020, 97 personas fueron asesinadas al día. Existe una tendencia histórica en las presidencias en México de aislar al primer mandatario, encerrarlo en una burbuja y no decirle las cosas que no quiere oír. En el caso de López Obrador parece ocurrir lo mismo y se percibe como cada vez más alejado de la realidad y de los mexicanos que tanto quiere proteger. Sus largos discursos y ataques en sus conferencias de prensa —las Mañaneras— a feministas, periodistas, empresarios, opositores y a cualquier que piense distinto, muestran esta desconexión con una gran parte del país. Es muy loable que AMLO quiera ayudar a los más pobres del planeta. Su discurso en las Naciones Unidas está plagado de buenas intenciones. Pero ahora, cuando está por entrar en la segunda mitad de su gobierno, debe trabajar en pasar de las ideas elocuentes a la elocuente acción de gobernar con resultados. Es muy difícil creer que podrá lograr algo a nivel global cuando advertimos que es el Presidente del país de los 100.000 muertos en tres años.

he Mattie Rhodes Center is working to create a cultural arts center to serve as a welcoming space for all Latinos to showcase their culture. The project is part of a redevelopment plan crafted in 2010, said John Fierro, Mattie Rhodes president/CEO. The plan included approval for a building to combine the current gallery exhibition space and folk art collection, he said. “Our cultural arts programming celebrates the Hispanic traditions and culture that make the Westside (area in Kansas City, Missouri) such a unique place to live and visit,” Fierro said. “The construction will be complete at the end of this year, and we will utilize the winter months to move in. We will have an opening in spring 2022 with a Cinco de Mayo celebration.” Fierro said the environmental remediation of the land was the biggest challenge for construction. Historical information indicates that site structures had been demolished by 1991, with no further development occurring until Mattie Rhodes opted to build. Because of the time gap between construction projects, the land had been neglected. It contained trees and brushy undergrowth on the southeastern portion. As a result, Mattie Rhodes started an environmental restoration process in the spring of 2020. “More than $500,000 has been spent on the environmental remediation,” Fierro said. “The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has issued a written notification that the site is environmentally clean.” Located on three parcels of land at 17th

CDL Trainer (Job Opening ID #514179) Full-time position available with the Aviation Department, Fleet Maintenance Division, 125 Paris St., KCI Airport. Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m. This position coordinates all aspects of the department’s CDL program and trains employees on various types of motorized equipment. Conducts road test preparation classes and schedules tests. Prepares and assembles clear concise lesson plans, course curricula, visual and mechanical aides, written materials and hands-on instructions while effectively communicating and providing training. Demonstrates assigned driving operations for trainees on a regular basis. Oversees the safe operation and use of equipment by trainees, ensuring that policy and standard are adhered to. Trains participants to be able to take and pass all written CDL tests as well as pre-trip inspections. Trains on Smith System Driving techniques, passenger endorsement and airbrake qualifications. Updates training manuals, handbooks, videos and other training aids required for instruction. Reviews driving skillset, such as performing turns, backing, shifting, etc. Conducts driver performance checks in the field and provides training and initiates counseling or disciplinary action if needed. Responsible for managing the development, instruction, administration of and record keeping for the CDL training program. The person in this position will have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate employees. The ideal candidate should have the abilities needed to provide instruction on the full pre-trip inspection, basic control skills and experience with various types of equipment. REQUIRES high school graduation and 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment or conducting heavy vehicle training courses and possession of a valid Class A or B CDL for 5 years; OR an accredited Associate’s degree in a related field (i.e. Occupational Education/ Automotive Technology/ Mechanical/Teaching) and 3 years of progressively responsible experience operating heavy equipment or conducting heavy vehicle training courses and possession of a valid Class A or B CDL for 5 years. May be required to possess Smith System Certification. Must possess a MO Class A or B CDL with tanker or passenger endorsements and no airbrake restrictions.
