The assessment from the U.N. health agency stated the mutated coronavirus could lead to surges with “severe consequences.” That is the WHO’s strongest, most explicit warning yet about the new version, first identified days ago by South African researchers. Three years ago, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) graded the nation’s infrastructure a D+ and warned that we’d need to spend $4.5 trillion by 2025 to improve our airports, bridges, dams, roads and more. Here in our area, Missouri’s road infrastructure is the eighth worst in the U.S. The ranking is based on a study of Federal Highway Administration data from 2017. The findings show that 23 percent of Missouri’s roads and 10 percent of Kansas roads are in poor condition, and 12 percent of Missouri’s bridges and four percent of Kansas’s are structurally deficient. Kansas ranked No. 27 on the list of 50 states. Not only will federal, state and local agencies responsible for implementing IIJA encounter the same obstacles that are impeding ongoing multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects – cost; political, scheduling and technical problems; land acquisition; utility relocations; and environmental litigation, but pandemic-related complications as well. There’s already a critical shortage of skilled labor, sharply rising construction costs, unpredictable availability of building materials and the ongoing supply chain crisis. That said, American taxpayers expect fast action on the infrastructure projects promised by the president and Congress and full transparency. All possible if implementers dedicate the same zeal to delivering as Washington did to passing the legislation.

Pérez, with the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Development Fund, said public colleges and universities in Missouri are sometimes able to find scholarship funds for undocumented students, especially if her organization, which also runs a Family College Prep Program, steps in to advocate. “That requires us knowing the system, knowing our partners, where the students don’t know how to advocate for themselves,” she said. “If we don’t hear about some of these issues, it’s hard for us to help them.” Sometimes, it can be easier for Missouri undocumented students to afford private schools or even go out of state, Pérez and Piedra said. In Kansas, multiple state universities — including the University of Kansas, Kansas State, Emporia State and Fort Hays State — say on their websites that undocumented students can receive institutional aid. Private universities can also offer support to undocumented students.

It emphasizes support for students who can’t file the FAFSA. “We have many scholarships that do not require you to be eligible for the FAFSA,” the college’s website says near the top of its main scholarship page. “If a student is uneligible to receive funds from the federal government, we automatically give them a 50% off of their tuition,” said Nick Sutton, director of financial aid at Donnelly. Pérez named Donnelly College, as well as Avila University and Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri, and the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska, as private colleges that have been especially supportive of undocumented students.
What private scholarships can I receive? Sutton recommends undocumented students look at specialized scholarship lists, particularly the ones from My Undocumented Life and the Kansas Missouri Dream Alliance. Other resources include: *Immigrants Rising’s 2021 Scholarship and Fellowship Lists *Scholarships.com’s Scholarships for Undocumented Students list *Kansas State University’s list of scholarships that don’t require citizenship, permanent residency or a Social Security number *Best Colleges Scholarships for Undocumented Students list There are also local opportunities, including those offered by Pérez’s organization. The Greater Kansas City Hispanic Development Fund, which in the past two years has awarded more than 15% of its scholarships to students who indicated they had DACA status or were otherwise undocumented, partners with local colleges and universities to match some of its awards, Pérez said. A list of partner colleges is near the bottom of the organization’s scholarship page. Meanwhile, the KC Scholars program is not open to all undocumented students but does allow Dreamers/DACA recipients to apply. What if I need more help? Piedra recommended Latinos of Tomorrow as a college access program that is sensitive to the needs of undocumented students. The Greater Kansas City Hispanic Development Fund also offers its Family College Prep Program to all students at Bishop Ward High School, East High School, Guadalupe Centers High School, Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, Olathe North High School and Wyandotte High School. The program leads financial aid workshops for students who can’t file a FAFSA. If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible for a specific scholarship or what your options are, you can always reach out to the financial aid offices of the college(s) you’re considering. High school counselors may also be able to offer guidance on how to find opportunities or meet eligibility requirements. For Pérez, it’s about getting students to college, even if the future is uncertain: “I tell them what my mom told me: that nobody can take your education away from you,” she said. “If you can still be in school and make some progress towards that, like, you don’t know how your life is going to change once you have that degree.”

The Star. During her time at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Sanchez pursued a double major, worked to pay for her tuition and talked her way onto the college newspaper as a freshman, serving in roles previously reserved for upperclassmen. Years later, Sanchez understands there are healthier ways of approaching schooling and a career. “That sort of busy bee work ethic is often found within immigrant families, and it is part of how I became successful, … but there are also lessons about balance,” she said. “Children who grow up with college-educated parents tend to follow a different path, particularly in their attitudes and expectations about the workplace. This is all within the findings of a dissertation study that I was a part of and later developed a series of leadership sessions around, along with the author of the original study. Employers and managers need to understand how class backgrounds, like racial and ethnic differences, can greatly impact the workplace.” Sanchez considers her latest position in the workplace as an opportunity to engage with the community while offering good journalism. Kansas City PBS, through Flatland and its other platforms, is dedicated to helping break through some of the noise, offering clarity and a place for listening and learning, she said. “The division within our politics too often stagnates thoughtful debate … or even a shared understanding of basic facts as a starting point for so many important issues,” said. “Also, Latinx journalists from a broad range of Greater Kansas City media organizations are organizing to form a local chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The effort offers a space for fellowship, for professional development and serves as yet another avenue to be a resource for the community.” The position also represents another phase of Sanchez’s reporting on race and critical social issues. Sanchez has become a local reference on both topics and served as a mentor with Report for America, and spent years training other journalists to write and report on those issues. During her career, Sanchez has received multiple journalism awards. But the one she holds closest to her heart is the 2017 Evelyn Wasserstrom Award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Greater Kansas City Chapter. The award encompassed not only her professional role as a columnist and reporter, but also her volunteer efforts, she said. Sanchez understands she is a representative of the Hispanic community in journalism – a privilege she does not take lightly, she said. “I know that some people see my face, … look at my last name and begin judging,” Sanchez said. “I’ve always been highly conscious of the fact that how I present myself and my views could be seen as illustrative of the broader Latino community.” “The other point is that being a journalist is also a privilege,” she added. “Especially with my national Tribune column, that’s a bit like holding a piece of public real estate. The best columns educate, illuminate and inspire. The focus shouldn’t be about self-promotion.”

Y es que precisamente, reconocer un maltrato, hacerlo público y escapar de él, es “el callejón sin salida” de aquellas que sufren golpes, humillaciones, gritos, amenazas, chantajes y violaciones por parte de sus parejas.

After moving to Kansas City, Frances worked for Lucey’s Luggage and Parmelee Safety Glasses until 1981 and part time at B & G Maintenance until moving to Liberty in 2005. Mrs. De La Torre was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s (aka Assumption) Church. Frances married Jesse C. De La Torre on June 6, 1958. He preceded her in
death. She is also preceded by sisters, Juanita Galvan, Topeka, KS, Elvira Lira and Mary Lira, all of Osage, KS; brothers, Felix Cisneros, Emporia, KS, John Cisneros, Topeka, KS, and Sontos Cisneros, Kansas City. She is survived by children, Michael De La Torre, Raytown, MO and Linda Mendoza (Kevin), Liberty, MO; brother, Phillip Cisneros, Emporia, KS; grandchildren, Chad De La Torre (Viviana), Selena Mendoza (Daniel), Amber Mendoza; great-grandchildren, Dominic Magee, Kaitlyn Gonzalez, Michael Iraheta, Johao, Jaela, Kevin Zambrano; and many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory. Frances had a lot of love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren especially Dominic who saw her daily and would rattle her bed and play peak-a-boo with her.

An excellent cook and chef he loved to create flavors, a avid golfer where he could be found at Swope Park Memorial Golf Course and retired golf marshall for over 25 years, Past president of KC PAN American Golf Association a pool shooter (shark); and volunteered to several organizations, most notably the Guadalupe Center (30 plus years) where he served as a board member and initiated
the Golf and the Culinary Programs for the respected community center, a coach and manager for various KC MO 3&2 baseball clubs and as a heritage dancer with the Azteca Dancers in his youth. He was preceded in death by his wife Carmen. (Family members who have preceded Bob were parents Luis and Manuela, Brother Tony Soltero & Sister Connie Martino (Family members who survive Bob are his bothers Jose Luis Soltero Jr, Lee’s Summit, Mo & John Andrew Soltero Kansas City, Mo , 2 sons Gary Michael Soltero, Leawood, Ks and Larry Anthony Soltero, Leawood, KS and daughter Joann Soltero, Kansas City, Mo 4 grandsons – Dominic, Stefen, Joseph & Vito. 1 great grandson Alex.
