The combined death tolls from the violent attacks so far: 10; the number of those who sustained bodily injuries: 69: the tally of victims: incalculable. The locations, settings, occasions and weapons used in the separate bloodbaths differed, and the two accused killers represented disparate life stages. The attacks didn’t take place in populous, cosmopolitan places like New York City or Los Angeles, Calif., notorious for violent crime rates. Rather, the carnage befell a small town and a tight-knit bucolic suburban community in the upper Midwest. A street bedecked for Christmas on a holiday parade route was the setting for the first attack late on a Sunday afternoon; a high school hallway just after lunch was the second. The first assailant, a 39-year-old longtime felon used a 2010 Ford Escape; the second, a 15-year-old high school sophomore carried out his deadly attack with a semiautomatic handgun, an early Christmas gift from his parents.

Predictably, the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School in Oxford Village, Mich., renewed afresh the tired gun debate over stricter firearms laws. There have been no such calls for tighter driving laws since the motorist deliberately – by all accounts – used his SUV on Nov. 21 to bulldoze Christmas parade participants and spectators in downtown Waukesha, Wis. Yet we’re confronted with the lethal risks the misuse of motor vehicles and firearms pose in equal measure. A Ford Escape weighs more than two tons; a semiautomatic handgun can typically carry up to 17 rounds of ammunition. Plainly, they both represent potentially deadly weapons. They’re as destructive as the person using them. And the number each of guns and motor vehicles equates to the U.S. population. The intended function of motor vehicles, unlike firearms, isn’t to injure or kill. But a motor vehicle in the hands of the wrong person is every bit as dangerous as is a firearm. Consider this -- it’s necessary to prove the ability to responsibly operate a motor vehicle in order to get a driver’s license, but obtaining a permit to buy a gun doesn’t require proving the same ability to use a firearm. The pandemic has left people of all ages in varying degrees of emotional distress. Uncertainty, anxiety and pandemicfatigue persist. That fact looms large. In the hands of troubled individuals, most any object can be weaponized.

Recently, the Unified Government Commission voted to extend its previous mask order for Kansas City, KS and the unincorporated area of Loring in Wyandotte County through 11:59 p.m. on January 6, 2022. This extension was in part due to COVID surges being seen not just in Wyandotte county but also across the United States and in Europe. Other reasons for the extension include: *Winter weather and the holidays mean more time indoors, where COVID spreads more easily. *Children under 5 years of age are still unable to be vaccinated against COVID and remain particularly vulnerable to the virus. *Nearly approximately half of people living in Wyandotte County (53 percent) remain unvaccinated. *Immunity is waning for people who were vaccinated more than six months ago. *Hospital resources remain under pressure.
What is Covered by the Mask Order
Individuals age five and older must wear masks over the nose and mouth when: *Inside any public space including businesses and places of worship; *Obtaining services from the healthcare sector in settings including, but not limited to, a hospital, pharmacy, medical clinic, laboratory, physician or dental office, vaccination site, COVID-19 testing site, veterinary clinic, or blood bank (unless otherwise directed by an employee or healthcare provider); *Waiting for or riding on public transportation or while in a taxi, private car service, or ride-sharing vehicle; and All businesses or organizations in Wyandotte County must require all employees, customers, visitors, members, or members of the public to wear a mask or other face covering when: *Employees are working in any space visited by customers or members of the public, regardless of whether anyone from the public is present at the time; or *Employees are working in an indoor space; or *Employees are working in any space where food is prepared or packaged for sale or distribution to others; or *In any indoor space where members of the general public are present or may be periodically present

Libros prohibidos y editores valientes

uerían quemar los libros. Q “Creo que debemos tirar esos libros al fuego”, dijo uno.
Mientras que otro advirtió que quería “ver los libros antes de quemarlos para identificar lo que está mal en nuestra comunidad”. Este diálogo no es de la Alemania nazi ni de la Inquisición en Italia o España durante la Edad Media. Esto se dijo hace poco en Estados Unidos, una de las democracias más importantes del mundo. Dos representantes de la Junta Escolar del condado de Spotsylvania en Virginia querían prohibir en las bibliotecas de sus escuelas libros con contenido “sexual explícito”. Entre los libros que querían quemar había uno sobre un grupo de niños que intenta escapar de circunstancias que involucraban prostitución y abuso sexual. Otro era un libro ilustrado sobre una chica del siglo XIX que se vestía como hombre para poder ir a la escuela de medicina. En la primera sesión todos los miembros de la junta escolar votaron a favor de prohibir y remover esos libros de sus bibliotecas. Pero cuando esto se convirtió en noticia a nivel nacional, la junta revirtió su posición.
Esto ocurrió en una pequeña población a poco más de hora y media de Washington, la capital del país. Y no es el único lugar en el que ocurre. La Asociación de Bibliotecas de Estados Unidos (ALA, por su sigla en inglés) tiene una lista de los 100 títulos más censurados en la primera década de este siglo en Estados Unidos. Varias de esas obras son alegatos en contra del racismo, la discriminación, las desigualdades de género. Hay una amplia y larga historia de censura de libros. La Enciclopedia Británica hizo una lista de algunas obras cruciales de la literatura que han sido censuradas en la historia, ahí están el Ulises de James Joyce, Los versos satánicos de Salman Rushdie, 1984 de George Orwell y Alicia en el país de las maravillas de Lewis Carroll. Esto significa que algunos de los libros más influyentes de la humanidad —algunas de las obras que han hecho pensar a varias generaciones de lectores y han contribuido a formar nuestro espíritu crítico— han sido censurados en algún momento por un gobierno, una autoridad religiosa o una junta escolar que se asusta con personajes de la comunidad LGBTQ+, con temas subversivos o escenarios autoritarios. En lugar de temer por los libros y optar por la censura, haríamos bien en entender la importancia de la labor editorial y defender la valentía de quienes la hacen posible. Y es que publicar puede ser un acto peligroso, como muestra el reporte de la International Publishers Association (IPA) de 2020. El informe confirmó que, en los últimos años, la libertad editorial está siendo atacada en muchas partes del mundo. En países como Cuba y Venezuela sencillamente no se pueden publicar. En algunos lugares publicar puede llevarte a la cárcel, como en el caso del editor Khaled Lotfy, quien fue sentenciado a prisión en Egipto en 2019. Y, otras veces, puedes morir por liderar un proyecto editorial. El editor Faisal Arefin Dipan fue asesinado en Bangladés en 2015 y en febrero de este año asesinaron en Beirut al editor Lokman Slim. Su hermana y cofundadora de la casa editorial Dar al-Jadeed, Rasha Al Ameer, recibió en su nombre el Premio Voltaire de este año, que destaca el trabajo de editores valientes. Alguien debe hacerlo, porque si permitimos que los gobiernos determinen qué debemos ver, escribir, leer o escuchar, estamos en problemas: es una clara señal de autoritarismo. Así que la primera regla de toda nación libre debe ser: no a la censura oficial. Por ahí empiezan a desmantelarse las democracias. En su libro Sobre la tiranía, Timothy Snyder, historiador y profesor de la Universidad de Yale, nos advierte del peligro de ceder ante los gobiernos. “No obedezcas por adelantado”, escribió. “La mayor parte del poder del autoritarismo le ha sido otorgado libremente”. Los editores y los periodistas siempre deben rechazar la censura, venga de donde venga. Pero eso no significa que estamos en la obligación de publicar todo lo que nos llega a nuestros correos electrónicos o a nuestras oficinas de redacción. Nuestro trabajo es
precisamente identificar y discernir lo que es noticia y vale la pena publicar y dejar fuera lo que no lo es. Y ni los gobiernos ni ningún poder debe involucrarse en ese proceso. Por ejemplo, los reporteros nunca estuvimos moralmente obligados a publicar los miles de tuits del expresidente Donald Trump o a difundir todo lo que decía, especialmente porque muchas de las cosas que declaraban eran falsedades. De la misma manera, ningún medio en México debería transmitir íntegramente todas las Mañaneras del presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador durante los últimos tres años y más bien debemos estar atentos y señalar cuando da “otros datos” que no coinciden con la realidad. Hay un paso intermedio entre replicar e informar: cuestionar constantemente al poder. Los editores y periodistas compartimos un mismo principio ético: siempre es mejor poner distancia con la gente con poder. Al final de cuentas, vamos a publicar lo que ellos quieren esconder o lo que no quieren decir. Y eso significa que no podemos ser sus amigos y tampoco podemos ser neutrales cuando abusan del poder. Tampoco en casos de racismo, discriminación, corrupción, mentiras públicas, violación a los derechos humanos y acciones dictatoriales. Debemos ser contrapoder. La periodista italiana Oriana Fallaci lo resumió magistralmente en una carta a un corresponsal extranjero: “Para mí, ser periodista significa ser desobediente. Y ser desobediente significa estar en la oposición. Y para estar en la oposición, hay que decir la verdad. Y la verdad siempre es lo opuesto a lo que la gente dice”. Creo que los editores y los periodistas hacemos nuestro mejor trabajo cuando desobedecemos a los poderosos, cuando cuestionamos su autoridad y cuando lo arriesgamos todo para contar la verdad. Nuestro trabajo es luchar contra la censura aún bajo el riesgo de quemarnos. Publicar libros no es un trabajo para los que quieren ser neutrales ni para los que prefieren quedarse callados. Detrás de la publicación de un libro prohibido o censurado siempre hay un editor valiente. Nuestra libertad depende de ellos. And it might help to talk to a friend or a family member, so try reaching out with a text, call or video chat. *Be realistic: The holidays do not have to be perfect or like previous years. As families change and grow, traditions will often change, too, so choose some to keep and be open to creating new ones. *Plan ahead: Set aside specific days for shopping, baking and other activities. Plan menus and make shopping lists to avoid scrambling at the last minute to buy forgotten ingredients. *Try to maintain healthy habits: Have healthy snacks before holiday meals so you do not go overboard on sweets, cheeses or drinks. Get plenty of sleep. Try to include regular physical activity in your daily routine. Be aware of the information you consume from news and social media, and make sure to adjust the time spent reading them if they are impacting your mental well-being.
FSI Elementary Kindergarten Students Get On a Bicycle For the First Time! Many Kindergarten students at Frontier School of Innovation Elementary got on a bicycle for the very first time. Eric Sharp, FSI Elementary Interventionist and avid bike rider himself, recognized the need for a complete Kindergarten PE Program, including a fleet of 24 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum. With the support of All Kids Bike and many months of securing donations, Mr. Sharp finally received enough donations to purchase the fleet and equipment. Last week Mr. Sharp, Mr. Brown (PE Teacher), and Michael H. (2nd grade student), spent the week assembling the bikes, Michael H. assembling most of them. During PE today, Kindergarten students spent time learning how to put on a helmet safely, sit on a bike, balance,
and walk the bike while sitting. The excitement and fear in their eyes was exhilarating for all to see. Teachers and administrators were watching from the windows in their classrooms and offices with smiles from ear to ear.
“During the Pandemic, I spent lots of time in zoom meetings just spending time with kids, talking to them about what they were up to while they were stuck at home. Something I noticed during our conversations, was a large number of students who do not know how to ride a bicycle. “The Mystery of Christmas” returns “El misterio de Navidad” está de regreso By Tere Siqueira

It is ‘The Nutcracker’ that tells the true meaning of Christmas, so it is quite a privilege to be able to share this oneof-a-kind ‘Nutcracker’ with a completely new audience.” The narration will be different for the Spanish version, but the dancing and acting will remain the same, Scrivner said. Offering a Spanish version of “The Mystery of Christmas ” was born in 2017, when Liz Dimmel, Dramatic Truth’s director, visited the church of one of the school’s board members. Because the church’s congregation is half-Spanish-speaking, they discussed how wonderful it would be for all his congregation to come to the show and understand the play. Making the idea a reality, however, was no easy task. Dramatic Truth encountered problems staging the show, including finding a venue and COVID-19. The delays are part of a long journey the show has taken. “Our director began writing/choreographing this show over 30 years ago,” Scrivner said. “She was inspired over a span of years with different parts. Finally, all the parts were put together in one year and ‘The Mystery of Christmas’ began! It was a lot of work! It is a tradition we have carried on every year since.” According to Scrivner, production for the show begins long before the first performance each holiday season. Rehearsals start in August, where all the dancers put in long hours perfecting their pieces. Additionally, they devote a week to working solely on the show. With all that work in mind, Scrivner encourages the Hispanic community to see “The Mystery of Christmas” and explore the diverse offering of other productions presented by Dramatic Truth. She also wants everyone to know that Dramatic Truth can offer opportunities to get involved. “We are so honored to be able to share one of our favorite shows with you,” Scrivner said. “This is a one-of-a-kind retelling of ‘The Nutcracker.’ We hope you and your family can join us this holiday season as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. In a blender, puree 2 cups walnuts and water 2 minutes, or until light and fluffy. Add powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon honey, vanilla extract and salt; blend 30 seconds. Add remaining honey if sweeter taste is desired. To achieve thicker whipped cream, add remaining walnuts and puree until light and fluffy. Store tightly covered in refrigerator until ready to use.

PARK RANGER (Job Opening ID #514240) Several limited-term contract positions available with KCMO’s Parks & Recreation Department, Administration Division, 4600 E. 63rd St. Normal Work Days/Hours: Varies, rotating 10 hour shifts. Assists the Director of Parks and Recreation in the security, control, management and protection of all Kansas City, Missouri parks, park property, boulevards, roadways within the parks, community centers and all wildlife and natural/cultural resources of the park. Assures the convenience and safety of all persons using the Kansas City, Missouri parks as permitted by city ordinance. Educates the public regarding park rules and regulations, proper use of park facilities and park natural resources. Issues General Ordinance Summonses (GOS) and Uniform Traffic Tickets (UTT) when required. Writes incident reports and other reports as required to document incidents, damage, theft, etc. Direct traffic when needed. Obtains needed medical, rescue or other emergency assistance in the event of emergencies involving illness or injury, or danger to life. Removes motor vehicles or trailers parked in violation of any city ordinance or requires the driver or other person in charge of the vehicle to do so. Reports all safety, health, or environmental hazards to the Park Ranger Supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRES high school graduation. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license in accordance with City of KCMO policies. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen. Must be eligible to obtain a class A private officer’s commission (armed) as issued by the KCMO Police Department Board of Police Commissioners. Must meet one or more of the following three requirements: 1. Graduated in good standing and be in possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited civilian police academy whose curriculum consisted of at least 470 hours of law enforcement training to include handgun training at the federal, state or local level. 2. Graduated in good standing and be in possession of a certificate of completion from a military police training/MP advanced individual training or other military MOS that involves law enforcement, criminal investigation or security patrol on military installations that included handgun training. 3. Ten years’ continuous experience as an armed private security officer in good standing. Preference given to those who have a background in park police and/or park security patrol, have parks and recreation experience, have a degree in a parks and recreation related field or a natural science and can exhibit a strong general knowledge of the natural environment.
