f the duties in Amarilis Valdez-Dempsey’s O professional life, perhaps the most rewarding is one she has fulfilled for more than 20 years:

mentoring.

“Mentoring is very rewarding,” said ValdezDempsey, Bank of America vice president of global information security. “I love it when a mentee gets the coveted job or gets accepted at the college/program of their choice. It gives me a sense of pride because it shows the mentee grasped the learning experience and put what they learned into practice.”

A mentor might represent multiple things to a mentee, said Valdez-Dempsey, who also is vice chair of the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Collaborative, the organization responsible for programs such as KC BizFest, Latinos of Tomorrow, Young Latino Professionals and Comida. Essential factors for a mentor is to be interested in the mentee’s development and a willingness to work with the mentee on a development plan, she said.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Americans can pick up COVID homes tests at their insurer’s preferred pharmacies or stores with no out-of-pocket payment. They also can buy the kits out of their health care network and then file a claim for reimbursement of up to $12 per test.

During her time working at Sprint, both taught her skills that included how to grow and mature professionally and mentally, she said. They also taught her the importance of respecting herself and others, the values of delivering quality work and recognizing opportunities, and navigating in an international space.

According to Valdez-Dempsey, Kansas City area Hispanics seeking mentors have plenty of ways to find one. Latinos of Tomorrow just launched a program for high school and college students. In addition, Young Latino Professionals provides mentoring at the professional level.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and some employers also offer mentoring programs.

It is important to continue utilizing those programs, the longtime mentor suggested.

“We need not just to prepare our students but also ourselves to help lead into the future,” she said. “One great way to do that is to leverage resources that are out there. If you are interested in being a mentor … (or) being mentored and don’t know whom to call, reach out to LOTS, YLP or the Hispanic Chamber, and they can provide support/guidance.”

Two of the area’s largest school districts – Kansas City, Kan., and Olathe, along with St. Joseph, Mo., cancelled classes and before-and-after-school programs for Tuesday and Wednesday because of a surge in coronavirus cases. In Kansas, the cities of Mission, Prairie Village and Roeland Park reinstated indoor mask mandates.

Children’s Mercy Hospital announced on Monday that the surge of the omicron variant and demand for testing has resulted in a “critical” shortage of Covid-19 test kits.

The next two to four weeks are “gonna be pretty rough here,” Dr. Gary Morsch with Docs Who Care, a healthcare staffing agency in Olathe told reporters. But there’s hope, he said. Researchers learn more every day about the coronavirus and emerging variants.

Last Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced updates to its consumer page on maskwearing guidelines. While clarifying which masks offer more protection than others from the Covid-19 and its variants, the agency stressed that any mask is better than no mask.

Addressing the skyrocketing cases of Covid-19 and its highly transmissible variants, the CDC recommends wearing in indoor public spaces a well-fitted mask or respirator that’s comfortable and provides the most protection. We each have a part to play in curbing the spread of the coronavirus and its variants as well as colds and flu, the agency said.

Last week, while grocery shopping, we encountered a middle-aged man demonstrating how not to behave. He was not only unmasked but coughing and sneezing into his hand, then touching countless surfaces.

Shoppers around him backed away and took other defensive measures to protect ourselves. The young woman ringing up the man’s groceries was stuck; she couldn’t escape his close and potentially hazardous proximity.

There are lots excuses for not wearing a mask that have all been argued ad nauseam.

In reality, masking invests us with the power to protect ourselves and others against illness and actively participate in helping end this wretched pandemic.

os primeros días de enero embajadores, embajadoras y cónsules de México participamos en casi medio centenar de reuniones de trabajo en Ciudad de México para conocer las prioridades de la política exterior de nuestro país y cómo la diplomacia mexicana puede ayudar al bienestar de nuestra población en este 2022.

Entre los variados temas del encuentro, la promoción y defensa de los derechos de mexicanas y mexicanos en el exterior destaca como el principal objetivo de trabajo, como lo explicó el presidente

Andrés Manuel López Obrador en un mensaje desde Palacio Nacional a los participantes de esta Reunión de Embajadores y Cónsules (REC) –que este año alcanzó su edición anual número 33. ¿Cómo lograrlo? Optimizando el trabajo de la red consular en el mundo: desde Guangzhou, China, hasta Leamington, Canadá; desde Sao Paulo, Brasil, hasta Kansas City, Estados Unidos, y así en toda la red de 157 Representaciones de México en el Exterior.

Among the various topics of these meetings, the promotion and defense of the rights of Mexican men and women abroad stands out as the main work objective, as President

Andrés Manuel López Obrador explained in a message from the National Palace to the participants of this Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls (REC) – which this year reached its 33rd annual edition.

How to achieve it? Optimizing the work of the consular network in the world: from Guangzhou, China, to Leamington, Canada; from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Kansas City, USA, and so on throughout the network of 157 Representations of Mexico abroad.

En 2022 nuestra comunidad también dispondrá de 11 jornadas sabatinas en el Consulado en Kansas City, comenzando el 12 de febrero, así como de nueve consulados móviles a partir del 26 de marzo: cinco en Kansas, tres en Missouri y uno en Oklahoma.

Como informó el canciller Marcelo Ebrard durante la REC en Ciudad de México: ante los retos derivados de la pandemia de COVID-19, el trabajo de las y los funcionarios consulares logró batir récords históricos a través de la atención a 3 millones de connacionales en Norteamérica y la emisión de 1.5 millones de pasaportes en Estados Unidos.

Continuaremos también con labores que nos permitan reducir el impacto de la pandemia entre nuestra población, informando sobre jornadas de vacunación y de cuidado de la salud, participación cívica y fortalecimiento de nuestras comunidades.

Con amigas y amigos de México en esta región vamos a promover nuestro turismo, idiomas y culturas. Por ejemplo, este próximo 24 de enero tendremos actividades para promover la igualdad racial y no discriminación hacia los pueblos afromexicanos.

La inclusión, respeto a la diversidad y dignidad de todas las personas tendrán este 2022 un sitio especial en el trabajo cotidiano de su consulado, de lo cual le informaré en nuestras próximas Voces Consulares.

We will also continue with tasks that will allow us to reduce the impact of the pandemic among our population, informing on vaccination and health care days, civic participation and community empowerment.

With friends of Mexico in this region we are going to promote our tourism, languages and cultures. For example, this coming January 24 we will have activities to promote racial equality and non-discrimination towards Afro-Mexican peoples.

The inclusion, respect for diversity and dignity of all people will have a special place in the daily work of your consulate in 2022, of which I will inform you about in our following issues of Voces Consulares.

Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship The Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship is a merit-based service obligation scholarship program that provides financial assistance to both students pursuing bachelor’s degree programs and currently licensed teachers pursuing an endorsement in hardto-fill disciplines or master’s degrees in hard-to-fill disciplines or either group planning to teach in an underserved geographic area. Recipients sign agreements to teach one year for each year of scholarship support in Kansas. Recipients are eligible to receive this scholarship for up to ten semesters, which includes both undergraduate and graduate work.

PUBLIC NOTICE UNIFIED GOVERNMENT OF WYANDOTTE COUNTY/KANSAS CITY, KANSAS ANNUAL ACTION PLAN (2021-2022) SUBSTANTIAL AMENDMENT The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas is required by federal regulation to publish substantial amendments to the Annual Action Plan and provide for a 30-day citizen review and public comment period. The citizen review and public comment period will begin on Friday, January 21, 2022. The Annual Action Plan consolidates three formula entitlement grant programs into a single application that is submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Due to an unforeseen urgent community need, the Department of Community Development proposes reallocating $400,000 from CDBG Public Facilities and Improvements for NRSA Initiatives to regular CDBG Public Facilities and Improvements to allow for emergency repairs to critical public facilities.
