At age 19, Merlo ended up in the hospital because of severe discomfort. This was the first time he had experienced high blood pressure. Doctors did not follow up on his case because they attributed it to the natural changes of adolescence. Then, at age 23, Merlo experienced the same symptoms again and was diagnosed with hypertension – a condition that has had him taking medication for the past 20 years. Unable to control the disease, doctors increased the dosage. Merlo went so far as to take three pills a day to maintain his blood pressure. Doctors have not found the root cause of his disease. During a 2017 routine medical visit, a doctor questioned Merlo

LULAC — the largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization in the country — is a volunteer-based organization that empowers Latinos and builds strong Latino communities. Since the council was created, Padilla’s main mission as council president has been to get in contact with other organizations to highlight the contributions of Hispanic Americans. “We are in contact with three Johnson County commissioners, the Shawnee Mission School District and the League of Women Voters to bring more awareness of the many contributions of the Hispanic American,” he said. Padilla, 80, has decades of experience serving his community. He was 32 when he first joined a community organization after being invited to join a then-new national organization called Incorporated Mexican American Government Employees. In the past several years, Padilla said he has been “very concerned” about the lack of active Kansas City area Hispanic organizations. What is more concerning to him, however, is that few are interested in joining. Case in point, it took him a year to find enough people to open the Shawnee Mission LULAC council. Born in Bonner Springs, Kansas, Padilla is ready to retire, but he fears there is not anyone to take over. “There is no one doing anything in Kansas City, so that’s why I keep going,” he said. “I wish a young Latino leader would show up.” Padilla hopes people reading this article will want to learn more and join the council. But despite the medications’ damage to his heart, Merlo cannot stop taking them because of his chronic hypertension. He is accompanying his medication treatment with acupuncture and is starting an intermittent diet he hopes will help him improve his health and gradually reduce his blood pressure. Merlo also hopes that others will be careful with their medication intake. And as someone who exercises, and avoids drinking and smoking, he hopes others will understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Merlo recommends that others with hypertension seek treatment methods beyond medication. In addition, he encourages them to be careful, take seriously the side effects that medications can cause and closely monitor the health of other organs when taking treatments for any chronic condition. Recently, a cardiologist diagnosed a condition in which some parts of Merlo’s heart appear thicker than others. Health experts explain that heart and blood vessels are more susceptible to damage after age 65. Merlo is 43.

tries. Most yearn for whatever ideal is their own interpretation of the “American Dream.” On consecutive days last month in different cities, the American Dream died for three immigrant families. Two New York City police officers were ambushed and fatally shot by a longtime felon while responding to a domestic disturbance on Jan 21. The following afternoon in Chicago, an eight-year-old girl was gunned down when a gangster opened fire on a rival gang member. Slain NYC Officer Jason Rivera was the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic. His partner, Officer Wilbert Mora relocated here from his native Dominican Republic. Chicago third-grader Melissa Ortega emigrated from Mexico with her mother, Araceli Ortega last August.

Life was good for Officer Rivera. At just 22, he’d achieved his two lifelong dreams. He joined the Police Department in November 2021. And last October, he married Dominique Luzuriaga, whom he’d loved since grade school. “My brother was afraid of heights, rats and dogs, but he wasn’t afraid to wear that uniform,” Rivera’s brother, Jeffrey, told mourners at his funeral. Jason embodied dedication, Jeffrey eulogized. “He was the definition of integrity. He was joy.” Officer Mora was the sole support of his aged, ailing parents, friends told reporters. The 27-year-old Dominican American had been on the force since November 2019. “Wilbert is three times a hero,” NYC Police Commissioner Sewell told funeral-goers. “For choosing a life of service. For sacrificing his life to protect others. For giving life even in death.” Officer Mora chose to be an organ donor. He lives on in the five recipients of his heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas. Melissa Ortega was fatally hit by stray bullets as she strolled hand-in-hand with her mom down a neighborhood street on a sunny Saturday afternoon. She was cruelly deprived of the opportunity to experience Chicago snow, get a Build-a-Bear or make TikTok dances with her friends – her most immediate aspirations. By all accounts, she was bright. It’s heartbreaking to think of the amazing things a grown-up Melissa might’ve accomplished. “She was a girl full of hope and had her whole life ahead of her,” her mom said in a statement. “Like many immigrants, Melissa hoped for a better life here. She sought to achieve the American Dream but was instead given American Violence.” In her moving eulogy to her husband, Officer Rivera’s widow held society to account. “This system continues to fail us,” she lamented. “We are not safe anymore, not even the members of the service.” The lives of law enforcement officers are no more or less important than all others. But an attack on police, as NYC Mayor Eric Adams said in a recent press conference, is an attack on everyone. Law enforcement is society’s bulwark against dystopian anarchy. We pay police to uphold the rule of law, that which undergirds our civilized democratic society.

En 2022 podrán votar por gubernatura las ciudadanas y los ciudadanos originarios de Aguascalientes, Durango, Oaxaca y Tamaulipas, ya sea que estén en Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, que es el territorio a cargo del Consulado de México en Kansas City, o en cualquier parte de Estados Unidos y Canadá. También este año las personas mexicanas en el exterior podrán participar mediante voto electrónico por Internet en el proceso de revocación de mandato, un instrumento de participación ciudadana para determinar la conclusión anticipada en el desempeño del cargo de la persona titular de la Presidencia de la República, a partir de la pérdida de la confianza. La convocatoria a este proceso se anunciaba el 4 de febrero. Para estar en posibilidad de atender la demanda de solicitudes de credenciales para votar en el extranjero, en la red consular de México realizamos Jornadas extraordinarias para que personas que no cuenten con cita puedan tramitar su credencial del INE y recibirla a tiempo para participar en las elecciones de gubernatura de esos cuatro estados. En general, el trámite requiere presentar acta de nacimiento, identificación con fotografía y comprobante de domicilio. El listado completo de documentos aceptables puede consultarse en www. votoextranjero.mx En el consulado usted recibirá un comprobante del trámite o número de folio, pues el INE es la autoridad responsable de enviar por mensajería la nueva credencial a su domicilio en Estados Unidos, a donde llegará en un plazo de tres a cinco semanas. n honor al Mes Estadounidense del Corazón en febrero, Mindy Brissey, residente del área de Kansas City, comparte su historia para crear mayor conciencia sobre las enfermedades del corazón. Brissey, mitad irlandesa, mitad mexicana, es una madre soltera que trabajó mientras asistía a la universidad y tiene su propio negocio de consultoría. Ella estaba familiarizada con el cáncer. She was familiar with cancer awareness. Both of her parents had cancer. Her mother had breast cancer and died when Brissey was 10 years old. Thus, Brissey regularly checked herself for cancer. She never thought, however, she might be at risk of developing heart disease. Life changed her attitude. “I started having symptoms of what could be best described as a heart attack,” Brissey said. After Brissey had begun experiencing symptoms, she visited a doctor. She experienced fatigue, heart palpitations, an irregular heartbeat and chest aches, she Mindy Brissey. said. “Everything happened so quickly I almost didn’t have time to think about it as it was happening,” Brissey recalled. “Six days after the first appointment with the cardiologist, I had a stress test, then they attempted a stent and decided I needed open heart surgery instead.” Although there was no family history of heart disease, Brissey learned there were some factors and behaviors that had led to her heart attack, she said. To feel better, she decided to quit smoking and lose weight. In addition, she joined a gym. For Brissey, the recovery time was slow and long. Since then, she has developed a new lifestyle that includes an exercise routine and stress management. “I feel grateful and lucky to be alive and that there is a reason and purpose that I am (here),” Brissey said. “One of those reasons is to use my experience and to share my story to educate women – specifically minority women and younger women – about heart disease.” One fact about heart disease Brissey is sharing is something her cardiologist told her when she told him she had spent her adult life “thinking about breast cancer.” The cardiologist told her “heart disease kills more American women than all cancers combined,” she said. “I was so stunned at his response that I asked him to repeat himself,” Brissey said. “I then told him that I considered myself a well-informed person and couldn’t believe I didn’t have any idea about this.” To prevent or delay the onset of heart disease, Brissey suggests parents teach their children healthy eating habits and to exercise daily. In addition, she advises people to prioritize their health and learn ways to combat stress.
