people. To commemorate the Feb. 14 holiday and recognize the impact of love in the daily lives of many, Vivar and Garcia are sharing the story of their relationship with Dos Mundos. Vivar and Garcia started their relationship as friends. They met through a friend and established a close bond over time. Of many memorable moments, Vivar’s marriage proposal and their wedding remain two of the most significant, they agree. “One of the most memorable things in my life is how Henry proposed,” Garcia said. “We both are fans of the soccer team (FC) Barcelona. On one of our trips to Europe, we went to … (El) Clasico, and Henry proposed there. This was very meaningful because it was in one of our favorite places in the world and one of the most important games … (for) our team.” “I will never forget that day,” she added. “It was such a magical

teaching high school juniors and seniors about entrepreneurship, is scheduled for Feb. 16-19. The application deadline for students to participate was Dec. 13, 2021. “During a four-day intensive training period, KC BizFest focuses on helping students turn hobbies and skills into profit-making ventures, establish entrepreneurial and leadership goals, create plans for business and life, and become effective leaders and team players,” information on the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Collaborative website states. Specifically, students will work on such skills as networking, identifying investment opportunities and public speaking. “By attending KC BizFest, stu-

Along the way, they have learned the lesson of how “to overcome the problems that exist in any marriage or relationship,” Vivar said. “The most important thing has been to know how to handle those problems and to talk when something happens – talk about it and move forward together,” he said. And like many couples, Vivar and Garcia are a dualcareer couple. As a dual-career couple, Garcia and Vivar have succeeded at finding the right work-life balance to keep a healthy relationship. The two work in the same field, Garcia said. Sometimes, their work schedules can get crazy, she acknowledged. Thus, they have had to learn to adapt and connect as a couple while finding time to get together and have fun. “I think the most important thing is to balance work with our personal life,” Vivar said. “Before the pandemic, we both traveled a lot for work. Being in the same field made us understand that this was normal. Keeping constant communication is an important thing when we travel for work.” As a couple who keep love alive in their relationship, Vivar and Garcia have some advice for other couples, based on the lessons they have learned. Partners must learn to communicate with each other – and to respect, understand and trust each other, they said.

ebruary is the month of love. It’s given over to celebrating love in all its glorious forms. There’s the mutual familial affection shared by parents and children and children and siblings; the romantic appeal of two people for one another; the platonic fondness and goodwill enjoyed with friends; the amity and caring for animal and plant life, strangers and God, known as agape; and finally, is self-esteem, in other words, self-love -- each individual’s appraisal of her/his own worth. The love informing these relationships rounds out life and satisfies our basic human need for meaningful connections and deserves a month-long dedication. It’s true that, while February’s timehonored epithet is “The Month of Love,” it also bears 13 commemorative designations. One of those is Teen Dating Violence Awareness. One in eight high school students reported abuse or violence in a dating relationship in the past year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and only nine percent of teenagers in an abusive relationship seek help, according to U.S. Justice Department data. Teen dating violence among 12-to-18-year-olds can take many forms, including stalking and/or physically, psychologically, economically and/or sexually abusing a current or former romantic partner. The Rose Brooks Center is taking a comprehensive approach to addressing teen dating violence using various forms of media to raise awareness, educate and provide support and resources. The domestic violence shelter initiated a schoolbased violence prevention program for teens experiencing violence at home or in relationships. During the 2020-2021 school year, Project SAFE staff served 1,067 students, Rose Brooks reported. The Center set up a webpage (rosebrooks.org/tdvam). There are warning signs for parents to recognize that their teen may be in an abusive relationship and tips for how to help. This can be downloaded and copied. There’s a 10-minute video addressing the signs of abuse, along with resources and suggestions for planning outreach activities and using social media platforms to help raise awareness. Through the millennia, love has animated February festivities. It offers an invitation to review with impressionable young people not only what healthy expressions of love are, but as importantly, what healthy expressions of love are not. As the Rose Brooks Center succinctly asserts, “Everyone deserves a relationship that is healthy, safe and supportive.”

The 10 commissioners and Mayor Tyrone Garner of the Unified Government of Kansas City and Wyandotte County will debate the approval of the “Safe and Welcoming City Act” to create a municipal identification accessible to undocumented people while avoiding, on the other hand, that local resources be used to enforcing federal immigration laws. The vote scheduled for the night of Thursday the 10th came about as a result of a proposal from a dozen organizations grouped together in the “Safe and Welcoming Wyandotte Coalition” and of negotiations with authorities to achieve a consensus document. Just over a third of the 170,000 inhabitants of Wyandotte County - some 56,000 people are of Hispanic origin, who, regardless of their migratory status, strengthen the society and economy of one of the most demographically diverse counties in the country. If approved, the Safe and Welcoming City Act would ensure greater and better security for undocumented populations, avoiding discrimination and preventing the authorities from unnecessarily collecting information on the migratory status of people. It also establishes that the Police Department “would use its resources and authority to protect the public of Kansas City, Kansas, including

Some requirements for the issuance of the municipal identification, when approved, would be very similar (such as a birth certificate or photo identification) to those for obtaining a consular ID or a Mexican passport, which continue to be available through the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City for the population of Mexican origin. OBITUARIES Joseph “Joe” Ojeda J

oseph “Joe” Ojeda, Jr., age 76, passed away at his longtime home with his wife and family close by his side on February 3, 2022. Joe was born on January 14, 1946 with his twin, Johnny Ojeda, in Omaha, Nebraska to his parents, Joseph and Juanita (Contreras) Ojeda Sr. One year later, his parents & his 6 siblings packed up and moved to Kansas City. As a young boy, Joe would attend the West Side Center making lifetime friends and unforgettable memories going fishing, camping, playing football and baseball. In 1958, Joe attended West Junior High School and there he met his precious love, Stella Vita Gonzales. On July 5, 1963, Joe and Stella (Peanut) were married and they built a beautiful life together celebrating 57 years married. Joe and “Peanut” became parents to their beloved daughter, Lisa Ojeda Moreno, in 1964. Joe was a dedicated husband who worked hard for his family at Armco Steel (GST) for 32 years. He continued to work at Allied Services until 2009. Throughout those years, their family grew as they had three more beautiful daughters, Michelle Ann Ojeda, Joey Renee Ojeda (Juan), Jaclyn Suzanne Ojeda-Gonzales (John). Joe’s daughters were one of his greatest gifts to life. There were many things Joe’s Westside neighborhood, family, and friends knew of him; his love for good music, his appreciation for nice looking cars and taking care of them, for having a beautiful flower garden, for being seen jogging from the WS to the Plaza and back, & for taking pride in his luscious hair. Joe’s bloodline will continue to grow becoming one of his most valuable blessings, with 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, Monique Alvarado-Arellano (Andrew), Ashlee Ojeda, Emilio Ojeda-Molina, Marissa Moreno, Joseph Moreno IV (Jessie), Juan Carlos Ojeda-Molina, Noel Gonzales,

Mario Guerra III, Maria Gonzales, John David Gonzales Jr., Manuel Guerra, & Julian Guerra; great-grandchildren, Andres Arellano, Lorenzo Molina, & Angelo Arellano. Each were loved dearly by their “Pops”. Joe appreciated traveling throughout the years together with his wife seeing the ocean in Hawaii and capturing all the memories. Joe blessed his family with some of the greatest gifts; raising them up in a house full of music & love. Music & family gave him life! Joe welcomed all into his home & never met a stranger. Updates on COVID-19 Vaccinations for Children Ages 6 Months to 4 Years

The short answer is that the okay for an emergency use authorization (EUA) of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID19 vaccine for this age group is still pending from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, the FDA is set to discuss that EUA next Tuesday, February 15. B u t t h a t ’s only part of the process of making vaccinations available for children ages 6 months to 4 years old. Once the FDA and the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBAC) approve the emergency use authorization, there may be an additional meeting with representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP). These groups will review data and can then provide the next level of approval for the EUA. After that approval is received, each individual state must determine what its guidance will be concerning the new EUA. Once finalized, each state issues its statewide guidance, which must be followed by cities and counties. City and county health departments like the UGPHD can preorder vaccines for this age group in anticipation of EUA approval, but we do not have a firm date as to when those vaccines will arrive. Once the vaccines for these younger children are ordered, it can take days or weeks to receive the vaccinations and get staff and facilities ready to begin administering vaccinations to them. For example, many facilities will bring on pediatric nurses and staff, who are specially trained to work with very young children, to help assist with administering vaccinations for them.

En México ‘nos están matando a todos’

A los 149 periodistas asesinados en México desde el año 2000. La sangre todavía estaba chorreada en el piso. No les había dado tiempo de limpiarla cuando tomaron la fotografía del lugar donde fue asesinado el reportero Roberto Toledo. Los primeros reportes indican que tres individuos le dispararon a quemarropa en la cochera de su oficina en Zitácuaro, Michoacán, junto a una camioneta blanca. “Le dispararon de manera ruin”, aseguró el director del portal Monitor Michoacán, donde Roberto trabajaba. Fue el cuarto periodista asesinado en México el pasado mes de enero. Ya es febrero y la vida sigue como si nada en México. Pero esa es sólo la careta, la imagen que el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador nos quiere vender cada día de la semana. La realidad es que nos faltan 29 periodistas que han sido asesinados desde que él llegó al poder en diciembre de 2018. Y de seguir así pronto se convertirá en el gobierno más letal para la prensa nacional, superando los 47 asesinatos a periodistas que ocurrieron en los sexenios de Enrique Peña Nieto y Felipe Calderón, respectivamente, según el conteo de la organización Artículo 19. La vergonzosa incapacidad del gobierno de López Obrador para proteger a los periodistas quedó al descubierto con la muerte de Lourdes Maldonado en Tijuana. Ella personalmente le había pedido protección al Presidente en 2019. “Temo por mi vida”, le dijo. Y aún así, el 23 de enero de este año, la mataron. El desafío a la figura presidencial es patente. Si el Presidente no te puede proteger en México, ¿quién lo va a hacer? La respuesta es: nadie. Tras la muerte de Lourdes el Presidente cayó en la misma muletilla. Dijo que “el compromiso del gobierno que represento es que no haya impunidad; que se investigue y se encuentre a los culpables”. Pero ¿quién puede creer en esas palabras del Presidente en un país donde el 93 por ciento de los crímenes cometidos contra comunicadores quedan impunes o ni siquiera se investigan? México —junto con la India— fue declarado el país más peligroso para la prensa en 2021, de acuerdo con el Comité para la Protección de los Periodistas. Por supuesto, criticar desde fuera es muy fácil. Así que hablé con Netzahualcóyotl Cordero, el periodista de CG Noticias que se salvó milagrosamente de ser asesinado en Cancún hace unos días. Un atacante le apuntó con un arma y le dijo que lo iba a “matar como un perro”. Pero se le trabó el arma al momento de disparar y Netzahualcóyotl y sus vecinos lograron detener al agresor. El casi fatal ataque ocurrió a pesar de que tenía protección del gobierno federal. Él cree que las frecuentes críticas de López Obrador a los periodistas los hacen más vulnerables a otro tipo de ataques, como el que él sufrió. Netzahuacóyotl, por el momento, está a salvo y en otro lugar. “Un compromiso es que no haya impunidad. Que todos estos crímenes sean atendidos”, dijo el Presidente tras el asesinato de Lourdes. Claudia Ramos —jefa de análisis de Animal Político, un sitio de noticias mexicano muy respetado por su independencia— se mantiene escéptica. “Los hechos lo desmienten, lamentablemente”, me dijo. “En este país se sigue matando periodistas, básicamente porque no se hace nada para investigarlos, para resolver las investigaciones, pero, sobre todo, para impedir que se siga matando”. Después me dijo una frase durísima, que refleja la grave situación que vive México: “No sólo matan periodistas; nos están matando a todos”. Los asesinatos —de periodistas y no periodistas— son tan

comunes en México que se ha perdido el sentido de urgencia. López Obrador insiste en sus conferencias de prensa, conocidas como Mañaneras, que su política de seguridad, “abrazos, no balazos”, está funcionando. “Ahí vamos”, dijo sobre los homicidios dolosos a principios de año. Pero la verdad es que la violencia continúa y los datos de muertos se acumulan. Desde que López Obrador tomó posesión en diciembre de 2018 han asesinado a 105.445 personas en México, según cifras oficiales del propio gobierno. Si nada cambia, este mismo año su gobierno se convertirá en el más violento de México en este siglo, superando las ya terribles cifras de los sexenios de Enrique Peña Nieto y Felipe Calderón. Lo peor de todo es que López Obrador no lo quiere ver. No corrige su estrategia. Cree, equivocadamente, que reunirse todos los días en la mañana con su gabinete de Seguridad es suficiente. Parece no entender que no se trata de reunirse y conversar sino de implementar acciones y dar resultados. Sí, las cifras de homicidios dolosos se han estabilizado, pero a los niveles más altos de la historia reciente. López Obrador es el presidente de los otros datos. Es el mandatario de un México imaginario que sólo existe en sus palabras y en sus largas conferencias de prensa. AMLO vive en la burbuja de Palacio Nacional. Ahí, ¿quién le dice que no? Alguna vez, cuando era un agudo opositor político, López Obrador señalaba los abusos del poder, criticaba al Presidente en turno y pedía mejores resultados. Ahora, en la presidencia, parece que ha olvidado su visión crítica de la realidad. Todas las mañanas habla de un país que sólo existe en su cabeza, es un México en donde “no hay corrupción” y “no hay impunidad”. ¿De verdad piensa que los mexicanos le van a creer cuando lo dice sin respaldo en la realidad? Basta ver las cifras de violencia o darse una vuelta por las calles de Tijuana, Zitácuaro o Cancún para constatar que no es cierto. Mientras tanto, a los periodistas nos toca seguir reportando, tercamente, la realidad. Y sólo por eso, por decir la verdad, tantos han muerto en México. Lo que pocos saben es que hay un pacto de honor con los que se fueron: donde ellos dejaron la nota, otros la van a seguir. Eso es lo que hacen los verdaderos reporteros. Y por eso debería ser una prioridad estatal protegerlos.

(AGI is your total income minus adjustments such as alimony payments, contributions to health savings accounts and student loan interest.) Some free filing sites have lower maximum AGI requirements. Some of the free file programs are available only in certain states; some offer free state income tax filing as well. You don’t need to file a state tax return to get a free federal tax return. You have to start the process at the IRS website; if you go directly to the company’s site, you won’t get the free benefits offered through the IRS. You’ll then have to create an account via ID.me, an independent company that will give you a six-digit personal identification number (PIN). You’ll need a copy of last year’s tax return to help prove your identity. You’ll get a new PIN each year. The IRS also provides free fillable forms for people whose AGI prevents them from using the free file sites. You won’t get any help filling out your forms, and the fillable forms make only basic calculations. You can print out your tax forms before you file them electronically.
