One of this year’s eight honorees is musician and native Texan Claudia Banda. Banda, whose parents are from Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico, arrived a few months ago in the Kansas City area to pursue a degree in marketing and international business at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. One of her activities outside of academics is playing in Mariachi Estrella. Since childhood, Banda has had a passion for music, she said. She started playing the violin at age 9 and played during middle school and high school. At age 15, she started playing mariachi music.

El negocio familiar surgió por una necesidad, recordó. Gutiérrez, madre de tres hijos, luchó por encontrar un trabajo que pagara lo suficiente para cubrir los costos de la guardería. Se dio cuenta de que cuidar a los hijos de otras personas le permitiría ganar dinero y cuidar de los suyos. depictions of hearts, the artists’ pieces are part of the “Parade of Hearts” fundraising campaign. The pieces were created to symbolize area unity and as a nod to the Kansas City area as the heart of America and its location in the Midwest, also known as “The Heartland.” Campaign organizers also are encouraging area residents to help support the campaign with donations. And when the showcase ends, the hearts will be auctioned. Proceeds will assist area artists, the “hard-hit hospitality community” and other professionals and organizations in need, such as female- and minority-owned businesses, recover from the coronavirus pandemic, the campaign website states. The donations will go to various organizations, including the Visit KC Foundation, the Mid-America Regional Council, AltCap and the University of Kansas Health System, campaign information states. Campaign organizers have photos of all the hearts posted on the campaign website. Visitors can learn the names of the artists and where the hearts are displayed. They also can download the campaign app, which includes such features as GPS locations for the hearts and ways to create virtual hearts. Campaign organizers encourage area residents to share the artists’ work and profiles on social media, and support area businesses while the seeing the hearts in person. “I was in high school when I joined the school mariachi club,” Banda recalled. “My Spanish teacher invited me to join the club. Once I joined the club, I was practicing and getting to know everyone; and then, we looked for a teacher who knew a lot of mariachi music. And since then, I … (have been) a mariachi (musician).” Since joining Mariachi Estrella in 2021, Banda has performed at Arrowhead Stadium and other venues around the Kansas City area. She is pleased to be recognized as a female mariachi musician in the community. “When people recognize me and congratulate me for playing Mexican music, (it) gives me joy and I feel very proud of it,” Banda said. Of the many joyful moments Banda has experienced during her music career, the one she cherishes the most is playing for the first time for an audience, she said. “I had a mentor who helped me a lot,” she said. “His name is Isaac Ortiz and he helped me as a musician and as a person. He pushed me to sing, and the first time I performed in front of an audience, he helped me tremendously. I owe to him the trust that I have in myself to perform in front of people.” However, being a woman in the mariachi world has its challenges, Banda acknowledged. “As women, we need to be careful,” she said. “We perform in different places and around people we don’t know. We gotta take care of ourselves and watch for the comments that people make. Also, sometimes people request that the mariachis that perform are just men.” There is more to Banda’s musical life than mariachi music. She loves listening to classical music and playing in the community orchestra in Overland Park, Kansas, she said. She also enjoys playing for her church choir. Banda’s role models are her parents because they have motivated her to fight for what she wants, she said. “They have taught me to … (not) give up and to work to reach my goals,” Banda said. In observance of Women’s History Month, Banda offers some words of positivity to the women in the community. “Chicas, yes we can,” she said. “We as women are powerful and can do everything we want.”

Soccer season is in progress, and Sporting KC will face Real Salt Lake this Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park in KCK; and, Worlds of Fun, Kansas City’s amusement park opens next month. With the deadline for filing tax returns less than a month away, last-minute filers are likely accelerating the process of either applying for an extension or preparing to file soon. The midterm elections are so far off, that they’re doubtless absent from the minds of most voters right now. In Kansas and Missouri, the primary election is Aug. 2 -- about four months away; the general election is Nov. 8 -- roughly seven months off. Nevertheless, here’s why it isn’t too early to think about the upcoming elections and verify registration status or update voter registration information. The last day to register to vote in the Kansas and Missouri primaries respectively is July 12 and July 6. Residents can register online, by mail or in person at the local election office. Missouri residents who will be 18 by the election can register to vote at age 17 ½. The only requirement for Kansas residents to register is that they turn 18 before Election Day. To be eligible to register, residents must be U.S. citizens. Individuals whose name or address has changed since the last election must re-register using the new name or new address. Better sooner than later. Aug. 2 and Nov. 8 may seem to be safely distant now in late March, but verifying registration status, updating voter registration information or re-registering if required leaves us time to familiarize ourselves with the candidates and ballot measures.

n los últimos 17 años, México ha cultivado y desarrollado un novedoso programa para contribuir a elevar el nivel de educación de la población mexicana y de origen mexicano en Estados Unidos, dentro de una estrategia más amplia de fortalecimiento de nuestras diversas comunidades en este país.

and Mexican-origin population in the United States, within a broader strategy of strengthening our diverse communities in this country.
La convocatoria IME-Becas 2022 está abierta del 22 de marzo al 6 de mayo. Sus posibles beneficiarios son universidades, colegios comunitarios, programas de extensión universitaria, educación tecnológica, cursos específicos (incluyendo cursos en línea). En el caso de programas de educación para adultos, las becas pueden destinarse a alfabetización, primaria, secundaria, examen general de desarrollo educativo (GED por sus siglas en inglés), HiSET, capacitación en computación, capacitación laboral, y clases de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL por sus siglas en inglés) y educación para el trabajo. Un comité local integrado por tres personas reconocidas por su labor educativa o comunitaria, analizará las propuestas y aprobará la entrega de fondos IME-Becas del Consulado de México en Kansas City a las instituciones ganadoras en Kansas, Missouri y la parte oeste de Oklahoma. If you are interested in IME-Becas or know someone who could benefit, talk to your school, community college, adult training center or university to make them aware of our call and consider submitting proposals. La cafetería, que abrió su primera ubicación en 1721 Westport Road en Kansas City, área de Westport en Missouri, abrió su más reciente sucursal en Crossroads Arts District, también en Kansas City, Missouri. As the fighting continues to unfold, mental health experts are raising concerns about the effects the latest global crisis will have on people already ravaged by a pandemic and other problems. Here are some tips to guide you in dealing with your anxiety about the Russian-Ukrainian war: *Limit triggering content: Avoid topics, words or phrases that can trigger anxiety. Because most news consumption comes from social media, be intentional about scrolling through your apps. And keep in mind that you might be exposed to fake news or misinformation. Now more than ever, it is essential to be selective about only following trusted news sources and limiting the time you spend scrolling through social media. *Support people affected by the war: Research shows that helping people during a crisis reduces stress and enables a person to regain a sense of control. Volunteer or offer financial support through reputable organizations that help people in Ukraine. Plenty of organizations can guide you on how to get involved, including the Ukrainian Club of Kansas City. For other organizations that are open to donations, visit https://readdle. com/stand-with-ukraine. *Avoid catastrophic thinking: Focusing on the worst outcomes causes spirals of negativity and heightened anxiety. But for Gutierrez, it was a priority to dedicate herself to properly preparing to do the work correctly because starting a daycare meant looking over someone’s life and giving children a platform for the people they will be when they grow up, she said. Thus, she and her mother got certified. They received training in multiple areas during the certification process, including first aid, entrepreneurship and child development education skills. They also received help in registering the business, Gutierrez said. Gutierrez has taken care of children for 10-plus years. In addition to her mother, who is her business partner, she is helped by her husband and children, she said. In addition, Gutierrez has received support from the Head Start program. Head Start connects and partners with schools, childcare providers, state and local preschool initiatives, and other community service providers for families to help create integrated educational programs. Because of Head Start, Genesis can provide better education and have extra resources for the children, she said. An admiration for immigrant mothers who have come to America and overcome challenges to seek better lives for themselves and their families helps drive Gutierrez’s business philosophy, she said. That is reflected by her efforts to keep Hispanic roots alive in the children who attend her daycare. Even after relocating, Gutierrez opted to settle in a Hispanic area to offer a quality place for children where Spanish is predominantly spoken. To help youngsters practice their Spanish, she speaks primarily to them in that language, she said. An awareness of the relationship between toys and a child’s development is another influence on how Gutierrez does business. “For a child to play with a baby doll gives them the attachment and compassion they need to be a good parent as an adult,” she said. “These are important things. You’re shaping their character and development, in the same way that a child loving you makes them feel comfortable and secure by making them learn.” Gutierrez focuses not only on offering daycare services, but also supporting parents in multiple ways, she said. For example, she guides undocumented families to resources, including lawyers, healthcare access and food stamps. “For me, helping others is paying back to those that did it for me,” Gutierrez explained. “I’m not looking to help others for financial remuneration. The way to pay me back is for them to help someone else as well. The parents come, and if they want to look for another daycare, I give them the information and resources they are looking for.” In observance of Women’s History Month, Gutierrez advises Latinas to remember that “anything can be achieved.” “You have to ask, and there is an opportunity for everyone,” she said. “Many people have come to this country for the American dream, and it is possible. We have to focus on our goals and take advantage of opportunities to get ahead. Never forget where you came from and who you are. That will drive you and make you a better person.”

Here are details on upcoming COVID-19 vaccination and testing events in our community: *Cross-Lines Community Outreach at 646 South 7th Street is providing free COVID testing and/or vaccinations every Monday through the end of March. El Departamento de Salud Pública del Gobierno Unificado (UGPHD, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció que cerrará su sitio de pruebas y vacunación masiva de COVID en el antiguo edificio de Kmart en 7836 State Avenue el 30 de marzo de 2022.
El último día de vacunación en el sitio será el viernes 25 de marzo. Seasonal position available with KCMO’s Public Works Department, Capital Projects Sidewalks Division, 4721 Coal Mine Road. Normal Work Days/ Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.3:30 p.m. Assists in inspecting City sidewalk improvement projects and monitoring contractors to ensure they stay in compliance with KCMO standards and specifications. Oversees the construction projects on the job-site and ensuring the construction work is completed according to City standards and specifications. Inspects warranties to reduce liability to the City. Answers any questions construction contractors may have regarding KCMO standards and specifications and the project manual for each project. Directs contractors in making corrections, if needed. Monitors construction projects from start to finish and reports back to supervisors. Assists in the keeping of field notes indicating lines, angles, distances, traverses, benchmarks and monuments. Investigates and prepares special reports as required. Inspects, measures and condemns sidewalks, driveways and curbs; explaining why repair or replacement is necessary. Makes sure everyone on the construction site is following safety regulations. Answers any questions the public may have regarding construction projects, compliance, status, etc. Performs snow removal on a residential snow route during winter months. REQUIRES high school graduation. Must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license in accordance with City of KCMO policies. Nurse Home Visitors must maintain a caseload of 25 clients and see families at home every 1-2 weeks, and must be able to travel in Jackson, Cass, Clay, Johnson, Lafayette, Platte, and Ray counties in the Kansas City area. Must be able to learn and adhere to national and state standards prescribed for this evidence-based program. REQUIRES licensure as a registered nurse as determined by the Missouri State Board of Nursing or a state having reciprocity with the state of Missouri. Possession of a current license or temporary permit (for transfer from other states). Must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license in accordance with City of KCMO policies.
