named a host city June 16. It will be among 16 cities spanning the United States, Mexico and Canada to host games that year. Other host cities will include Boston, Mexico City, Los Angeles and Toronto. “This is an important milestone in our work to make Kansas City an international destination for sports tourism and I could not be more proud,” said Kathy Nelson, president and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission and Visit KC, as quoted in a city press release. The announcement capped a five-year bid process. A formal announcement was made at KC Live! in the Kansas City Power and Light District. “Our team effort to bring the

Editor and co-founder Clara Reyes attributes the award-winning broadsheet’s staying power to numerous factors. “Being bilingual helps; having people who believe in Dos Mundos and identify with it really helps,” Reyes says, adding, “People like to read in their newspapers what’s happening in the community, and that’s what really helps.” The strength of the family-owned weekly is also bolstered by providing a powerful megaphone for the area’s diverse Hispanic community in their own language; linking them with vital information and relevant cultural resources; and offering a practical teaching device for classroom instruction of English and Spanish at all levels. “It’s going to schools, and teachers say it’s a wonderful tool to learn English or Spanish,” Reyes says. Dos Mundos remains viable because of its resilience and nimble versatility. Reyes and her team continue to broaden the newspaper’s reach through creating content for multiple platforms – the Web, mobile devices and radio broadcasts. Once weekly, Reyes reports area news and events in Spanish. The hour-long program airs on all three Reyes Media Group commercial stations – KDTD 1340 AM, KYYS La “X” 1250 AM and KCZZ 1480 AM. It’s a labor of love for Reyes, who says, “I like being able to help the community.” While raising area awareness of Hispanic issues and transforming the region’s media landscape, Dos Mundos remains true to its mission. The full-color weekly began and remains a community-driven family enterprise. It launched as a synergetic project in Clara and Manuel Reyes’s Overland Park basement. Clara, admittedly not a typist, managed to produce and proofread the Spanish text; her brother-in-law, Jim Hillen typed and proofread the English. It was printed at Neff Printing, and Manuel with the Reyes’s daughter, Diana and son, Ed brought home the bundles of newspapers. Family and friends rolled, rubber banded and bagged the papers for delivery. “Everyone wanted to help,” Clara says. The volunteers distributed the pioneering first edition of Dos Mundos to homes and businesses in Hispanic neighborhoods. “After we did the first newspaper, I said, ‘that’s it. I’m not doing another one,’” Clara recalls. But it was so enthusiastically embraced by readers, businesses eager to advertise and volunteers that Clara relented. Throughout that first year, a stunning groundswell of support materialized at the Reyes’ home in a floodtide of stories and photographs. They came from all over the metro, contributed by Hispanics for publication in “their” newspaper. Dos Mundos outgrew the basement so they rented a small office on Kansas City’s historic Westside. When operations again exceeded space, Dos Mundos took over a two-story, multi-office building on Southwest Boulevard. A move in 2016 to a sprawling building in Kansas City, Kan., allowed Reyes Media Group to centralize Dos Mundos, its flagship product and the three radio stations. Clara anticipates that digital will dominate audio and print journalism when Dos Mundos celebrates the golden anniversary in nine years. She marks this anniversary by eulogizing staff, past and present. “I’m very thankful for everyone working with me at Dos Mundos. They really love Dos Mundos and what we do, and that’s why we look so good,” she says. “And I thank the restaurant owners and businesses that welcome Dos Mundos.”

Happy birthday, Dos Mundos! Part II ¡Feliz cumpleaños, Dos Mundos! Parte II

omo reportamos anteriormente, Dos Mundos está celebrando su aniversario número 41 este mes. Para conmemorar ese aniversario, nuestros empleados comparten algunos de sus recuerdos de trabajar para el periódico. Aquí hay algunas de las más significativas: “Recuerdo las noches en nuestro sótano, armando páginas en mesas de ping pong. Encerábamos y cortábamos cada sección de texto o arte a mano y lo armábamos como un rompecabezas. Siempre teníamos prisa por cumplir con el plazo de impresión. Recuerdo trabajar en el cuarto oscuro para revelar los rollos de película y luego cada imagen. Recuerdo el olor del papel y la tinta en el muelle de carga por la mañana. Recuerdo atar periódicos y envolverlos en bandas elásticas. Nuestro sótano estaba lleno de temas agrupados. Recuerdo que buscaba indicios de que una casa fuera hispana y cronometraba el lanzamiento del periódico para que aterrizara perfectamente en el camino de entrada. Recuerdo haber imaginado a alguien tomando su periódico por la mañana y leyéndolo mientras tomaba café. Recuerdo ver a amigos y vecinos de la comunidad que visitaban la oficina para hablar con mi mamá y mi papá sobre historias o imágenes que vieron. Recuerdo a Manuel (co-fundador Manuel Reyes) siempre tratando de encontrar el mejor ángulo para la foto correcta. Recuerdo llevar fajos de papeles a negocios de la ciudad con Manuel y visitar a los dueños de las tiendas cada semana. Recuerdo a Clara (cofundadora y editora Clara Reyes) siempre preguntándose por qué y buscando respuestas. Recuerdo haber escuchado las reuniones que ocurrían en nuestras oficinas con líderes empresariales y cívicos locales que intentaban que se escucharan sus voces o que se consideraran sus historias. Recuerdo la frustración de la comunidad ante la injusticia o la inequidad. Recuerdo la felicidad que vino con las celebraciones y los hitos que alcanzaríamos juntos. El negocio de los periódicos ha sido una odisea para nuestra familia. Nos ha unido y nos ha dividido en muchas ocasiones. Como organización comunitaria, hemos visto a tantas personas talentosas y maravillosas colaborar y trabajar con nosotros para crear una publicación que representaba quiénes éramos y celebraba nuestros logros. Trabajamos juntos para construir puentes con otras comunidades y con nuestros gobiernos locales, para que aprendiéramos a respetarnos unos a otros. Somos verdaderamente afortunados de haber trabajado con tantas personas que han sido como una extensión de nuestra familia. Cada semana, recopilamos las ideas y presentaciones de los representantes de la comunidad del área, así como de las comunidades vecinas en Topeka, Lawrence, así como de Independence, Colombia, Marshall, Missouri. Compartimos arte, música, danza y cultura producida por el talento local. Siempre tratamos de resaltar lo que a menudo se pasa por alto en los principales medios de comunicación para alentar a otros. Clara siempre decía que debíamos centrarnos en las noticias positivas porque otros proveedores de noticias siempre mostraban las historias negativas. A nivel nacional, pertenecíamos a la Asociación Nacional de Publicaciones Hispanas, y anualmente, Manuel y Clara viajaban para representar a la región del Medio Oeste en un panel de editoriales latinas. We would wax and hand cut each section of text or art and put it together like a puzzle. We were always rushed to meet the printing deadline. “I remember working in the darkroom

“News that either originated with Latinos or directly affected Latinos. “Locally, we saw families grow through marriages and baptisms or birthdays. We remembered lost ones that had passed. We celebrated graduations or advancement in careers. We shared information and knowledge about resources or tips on getting through life. We reminded our readers about important dates or events that meant something to us. We shared art, music, dance and culture that was produced by local talent. We always tried to lift what was often overlooked in mainstream media to encourage others. “Clara always said that we should focus on positive news because other news providers were always showing the negative stories. “Nationally, we belonged to the National Association of Hispanic Publications, and yearly, Manuel and Clara traveled to represent the Midwest region in a panel of Latino publishers. These conferences helped other editors and publishers understand challenges and help each other in dealing with those challenges. We won several awards through the years, but the biggest reward was in the camaraderie that developed with other newspaper owners. “Today, it’s hard to keep up with the changes that the world has made in finding and collecting news and information. “We hope that, ultimately, the content we deliver will keep our readers engaged and interested. We aim to keep producing information, news and resources that will help futures generations of artists, professionals and leaders understand who they are, where they came from and how far they can go in their lives. Never losing touch with the culture that made us unique.” – Edward Reyes – “One of my favorite memories of working at Dos Mundos was getting to interview people in the community, especially leaders in it, who were always so fond of Dona (Doña in Spanish) Clara and Don Manuel and the impact they had on the community and hearing the respect the community had for their work. It’s truly special to be a part of this paper that means so much to the Hispanic community in the Kansas City area and to help continue its legacy.” – Angie Baldelomar –

Our basement would be full of bundled issues. “I remember looking for hints of a house being Hispanic and timing the throw of the newspaper so it would land perfectly on the driveway. “I remember imagining someone getting their paper in the morning and reading it over coffee. “I remember watching friends and neighbors from the community visiting the office to talk with my mom and dad about stories or pictures they saw. “I remember Manuel (co-founder Manuel Reyes) always trying to find the best angle for the right picture. “I remember taking bundles of papers to businesses around the city with Manuel and visiting with store owners each week. “I remember Clara (co-founder and editor Clara Reyes) always questioning why and probing for the answers. “I remember listening to the meetings that occurred in our offices with local business and civic leaders who were trying to get their voices heard or their stories considered. “I remember the frustration of the community when faced with injustice or inequity. “I remember the happiness that came with the celebrations and the milestones we would reach together. “The newspaper business has been an odyssey for our family. It has brought us together and it has divided us on many occasions. “As a community organization, we have seen so many talented and wonderful people collaborate and work with us to create a publication that represented who we were and celebrated our achievements. We worked together to build bridges with other communities and with our local governments, so that we would learn to respect each other. We are truly lucky to have worked with so many people who have been like an extension of our family. “Each week, we collected the ideas and submissions from community representatives from the area, as well as from neighboring communities in Topeka, Lawrence, as well as from Independence, Colombia, Marshall, Missouri. Sometimes, we would get news from nearby states like Iowa, Nebraska or Oklahoma.

“Here are some memories that are special to me: “Working in the old facility on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri, with Manuel. He had a kind, easygoing spirit and could make me laugh. “Working with Becky Jaramillo, whom I dubbed ‘The Patron Saint of Newspapers.’ She was a nice lady with a passion for informing the community. “Attending the 20th anniversary party in 2001 at Crown Center. It was amazing how many community members were there, sharing a wonderful milestone with us. On a personal note, I think it was one of the last outings I had with my parents before my dad died in August that year. I cherish that the three of us got to be together near the end of his life in a warm, festive place. “The support the staff showed me after my dad’s death in August 2001 and my mom’s death in May 2016. “Covering a benefit shortly after 9/11, also at Crown Center. I got to briefly talk with baseball legend Buck O’Neil. More importantly, though, I saw the resiliency of our community after a national tragedy. That helped make it easier to keep going in the dark days that followed. “Covering the AFC championship game in 2020, when Kansas City rallied to defeat Tennessee for the Chiefs’ first-ever AFC title en route to their first Super Bowl title in a half-century. Even if the Chiefs win more Super Bowls (and I hope they do) that Super Bowl season will be special to me – probably for the rest of my life.” – Shawn Roney – “When I was 13 years old I used to spend time of my summers visiting Dos Mundos office. I learned a lot. It was also really fun and I got amazing memories from that time. One of my favorite was going with Señora Clara to help her with stuff and hearing all her stories about founding the newspaper.” – Teresa Siqueira –
