Her duties include examining “important news, facts and stats about specific players, coaches or the team in general,” she said. “I’m new … (to) this field, but working next to Josue Orantes and Diego Gutierrez has helped me develop specific characteristics to find my spot on the team,” Infante said. Infante, however, is not new to soccer. She began playing it as a girl “on the streets” and even had the opportunity to be part of Mexico’s 17-and-under girls national team, she recalled.

Infante’s playing experience included eight years with Andrea’s Soccer, “Mexico’s first 100% female club,” she said. She then played at the collegiate level while attending high school at Tecnologico de Monterrey, she said. “My coach pushed me to play with the college girls as a high school player,” she said. “During that time, I got called to play for the Mexican national team U17, where I played for over a year.” From there, Infante played women’s soccer at Oklahoma Baptist University. She then tried playing professionally in Mexico, but “the league was not mature then and the payments were low, so I decided to pursue a master’s instead,” she said. Infante also has experience coaching soccer. She started coaching young players, then served as a graduate assistant coach at Emporia State University in Kansas, where she recently earned a master’s degree in business administration. Getting that experience hasn’t been easy for Infante. She suffered discrimination for her height when playing for the Mexican national team, she said. And being far from her family hasn’t been easy, she said. But the knowledge Infante has gained from playing and coaching have helped her communicate with her listeners, she said. “Knowing and understanding the game facilitates my verbal communication with the listeners,” she said. “The first time I came to the radio cabin, I was nervous to hear myself speaking through the headphones and getting distracted by it. Now, I feel more comfortable talking and transmitting specific facts about the game to the people who tune in … (to) us.” For Infante, broadcasting soccer continues to fulfill her dream of being “close to the sport,” she said. “Being able to transmit it to the listeners is just amazing,” Infante said. Infante stays close to soccer as a fan, too. Her favorite teams include Pumas and FC Barcelona. She also declares herself a fan of legends Ronaldinho and Leo Messi and admires former Mexican player Charly Corral. Infante has some advice for women interested in pursuing sports-related careers. “Build confidence in your knowledge and take as many opportunities as you can,” she said.

Is it because, as studies suggest, that six in 10 Hispanic Americans consider the loss of memory and cognitive abilities a normal part of the aging process even when the loss is severe enough to disrupt daily life? Why are Hispanic Americans woefully underrepresented in Alzheimer’s and dementia clinical trials and research studies? Healthcare providers and scientists want answers. So do we. Here are crucial takeaways from the Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month observance. Early diagnosis can improve outcomes and overall quality of life. Help for those suffering from dementia and their families is readily available and accessible in Spanish. People suffering from dementia and their families, most especially Hispanic Americans are urgently needed to participate in clinical trials and Alzheimer’s research studies. Learning the 10 early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s/dementia could be life-saving to someone we love.

l presidente de México estaba E feliz. “Hoy vamos a escuchar cumbia”, dijo Andrés Manuel López

Obrador, “por el triunfo de Gustavo Petro, que nos da mucho gusto”. El resultado electoral en Colombia, en donde por primera vez en la historia gana un candidato de izquierda, refleja su visión de la política, su “primero los pobres”. Y, de pronto, en una pantalla gigante del Palacio Nacional en Ciudad de México, frente a decenas de periodistas, se escuchó La pollera colorá, que en unos versos dice: “Es que estoy yo contento / porque con su movimiento / inspiración ella me da”. Con el triunfo de Petro para la presidencia, Colombia se suma a otros países que han elegido a líderes de izquierda. En la lista están los presidentes de México, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Perú y la mandataria de Honduras. Y luego están los dictadores de Cuba, Nicaragua y Venezuela, quienes se autoproclaman de izquierda. No hay duda: la fiesta está a la izquierda. Después de unos años con gobiernos de derecha o centro derecha, América Latina parece ir al ritmo de “su movimiento”, inspirada por la promesa de cambio y esperanza. El triunfo de Petro en Colombia se dio en circunstancias similares a la victoria de López Obrador en México en 2018: refleja en buena medida el rechazo a los partidos políticos tradicionales, al poder establecido y unas ansias bien justificadas de cambio. “A partir de hoy Colombia cambia, Colombia es otra”, dijo Petro en su discurso de victoria. “El cambio también significa la bienvenida a la esperanza”, agregó después. Tradicionalmente, la agenda de la izquierda está ante todo con los menos favorecidos, con los de abajo, con los que han sido explotados y olvidados por generaciones. Por eso no es de extrañar su resurgimiento en una América Latina que sigue siendo la región más desigual del mundo. El 10 por ciento más rico recibe el 37 por ciento de los ingresos, según un estudio de las Naciones Unidas y glosado por la BBC. Mientras que el 40 por ciento más pobre de los latinoamericanos apenas obtiene el 13 por ciento de los ingresos. Y la pandemia sólo ha acrecentado esta brecha. Por eso ese viraje a la izquierda se entiende. Pero no hay que dejar de señalar y defender algo crucial para esta región que, además de desigual, tiene aún Estados de derecho jóvenes y a veces frágiles: la izquierda genuina tiene también un compromiso firme con la democracia, con el respeto de los derechos humanos y con las leyes de transición del poder. Petro, igual que el resto de los líderes de izquierda democráticamente elegidos de la región, debe ser coherente con ese principio. ¿Qué hace un latinoamericano azotado por los grandes males que recorren la región: el hambre, la discriminación, la falta de oportunidades, la mala salud y educación, la impunidad, la violencia de los carteles de las drogas y pandillas y la corrupción de los políticos tradicionales? Se va de su país, si puede. Un número récord de colombianos ha llegado a la frontera con Estados Unidos, y el pasado mes de mayo la Patrulla Fronteriza estadounidense detuvo a casi 240.000 personas que entraron al país desde el sur sin documentos. Y muchos latinoamericanos —algunos de ellos no pueden hacer el viaje al norte— han optado por votar por la izquierda, por políticos que no apesten a las viejas estructuras partidistas y por quienes les prometan un poquito de esperanza. No podemos olvidar que los más pobres de los pobres no tienen el dinero suficiente para emigrar. (El trayecto y el pago a los coyotes cuesta miles de dólares). Y ellos conforman uno de los sectores que están escogiendo a líderes que prometen mayor justicia social. Petro, por ejemplo, ganó ampliamente en el Pacífico colombiano

y obtuvo el 81 por ciento del voto en el Chocó, uno de los departamentos más pobres del país. Su contrincante en la segunda vuelta, el magnate inmobiliario Rodolfo Hernández —quien durante al menos una parte de la campaña estuvo en Miami y se negó a participar en los debates presidenciales de la segunda vuelta—, fue destrozado electoralmente en algunas de las zonas menos favorecidas de Colombia. Las promesas de cambio y de mayor igualdad son bienvenidas en Colombia y en el resto de América Latina. Sobre todo ante la posibilidad de una recesión global. Pero los gobiernos de izquierda han tenido mala fama en nuestra parte del mundo. Las dictaduras de Cuba, Venezuela y Nicaragua comenzaron con promesas afines, en teoría, a la izquierda democrática y derivaron en regímenes autocráticos que asesinan, torturan, censuran, encarcelan a opositores, se perpetúan en el poder o violan flagrantemente los derechos humanos. Y es muy frustrante que algunos de los actuales presidentes de izquierda —digamos AMLO en México y Alberto Fernández en Argentina— se nieguen a criticar en público los graves abusos cometidos por el nicaragüense Daniel Ortega, el venezolano Nicolás Maduro y el cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel. No saben el daño que justificar o no condenar a estos líderes autoritarios le causa a su propia credibilidad y a la credibilidad de la izquierda. Hay que decir que el mito de que todas las izquierdas son autoritarias es equivocado. No es lo mismo ganar unas elecciones limpiamente, como acaba de ocurrir en Colombia, que encarcelar a candidatos presidenciales, como pasó en Nicaragua, realizar fraudes electorales, como en Venezuela, o reprimir a quienes piden apertura democrática, como en Cuba. En una entrevista en marzo de 2018 le pregunté a Gustavo Petro, entonces candidato presidencial en esas elecciones, si él creía que Hugo Chávez había sido un dictador en Venezuela. Los múltiples abusos, expropiaciones, actos de represión y censura del régimen chavista —y la brutal manera en que concentró el poder y terminó con la democracia en Venezuela— ya estaban bien documentados. Pero Petro le daba vueltas a la respuesta y, al final, luego de insistir mucho, dijo, refiriéndose a Chávez: “A mí me parece que lo eligieron popularmente”. Espero que Chávez nunca sea un modelo para Colombia ni para ningún otro país del hemisferio. Muchos podrían dormir más tranquilos si supieran que los nuevos líderes izquierdistas de nuestra región no admiran ni respetan a tiranos populistas como él. Hay una incapacidad de los líderes más progresistas de América Latina para criticar a los dictadores izquierdistas de nuestro continente. ¿Por qué a estos líderes, con agendas e ideas progresistas, les resulta tan difícil llamar “dictador” a Ortega, Maduro o DíazCanel? Tienen la lengua atorada. Esos tres son igual de tiránicos de lo que fue el general chileno de derecha Augusto Pinochet. Hoy la izquierda está de fiesta porque, por fin, está ocupando el poder. Y lo está haciendo de manera democrática y pacífica: sin revoluciones violentas, movimientos guerrilleros o golpes de Estado. Pero gobernar es un acto de conciliación, desgaste y respuestas asertivas a los problemas profundos, y los líderes deben cumplir con sus promesas de esperanza y cambio. Mientras tanto, sólo espero que gobiernen lo mejor posible para los más necesitados —que aterricen sus sueños— y que dentro de unos años entreguen el poder, sin demora, al que gane la siguiente elección. ¿Es mucho pedir una izquierda que se comprometa sin matices ni justificaciones con la democracia?
