ara su asombro, Jessica Sevilla-Pulido se ha convertido en “el modelo a seguir de varias personas”.

La razón por la admiración es debido a su profesión: tecnología del internet (TI).

“He sido invitada para dar charlas en escuelas donde mi compañera de trabajo y yo (otra mujer) somos las únicas oradoras invitadas y veo a las alumnas muy felices de vernos y… (nos hacen) un montón de preguntas”, dijo Sevilla-Pulido, quien trabaja como especialista en soporte de TI para McCownGordon Construction en Kansas City, Missouri.

Ser un modelo a seguir para los estudiantes es “extraño de pensar, pero también genial”, dijo.

Latina becomes ‘many people’s role model’ in IT field

o her amazement, Jessica Sevilla-Pulido has become T “many people’s role model.”

The reason for that admiration is because of Sevilla-Pulido’s profession: internet technology (IT).

“I’ve been a guest speaker at school Q & As where I and my coworker (another female) are the only guest speakers and I see the female students so happy to see us and … (they ask) us a ton of questions,” said Sevilla-Pulido, who works as an IT support specialist for McCownGordon Construction in Kansas City, Missouri.

Being a role model for students is “strange to think about but also kind of cool,” Sevilla-Pulido said.

The journey of becoming that role model started in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, where Sevilla-Pulido was born. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, where she attended Turner High School. She then attended Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, and majored in information technology with a minor in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Sevilla-Pulido chose a technology major because the profession is always changing and is everywhere, she said. And as one of the few women pursuing the technology field, it made her feel challenged, as has her career.

he U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising that COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers change the composition of their vaccines to add new variants for booster shots for the fall and winter seasons.

According to the FDA, the virus has evolved significantly, and the new variants tend to spread quickly and easily.

“Currently, available vaccines have helped reduce the most serious outcomes (hospitalization and death) caused by COVID-19,” the FDA said in a statement. “But results from post-authorization observational studies have shown that effectiveness of primary vaccination wanes over time against certain variants, including Omicron. And while initial booster doses have helped restore protection against severe disease

Según Galicia, el recorrido está estructurado para que personas de todas las edades puedan disfrutar de la zona de forma segura. Las personas pueden usar bicicletas, scooters, vehículos, o caminar, dijo.

El boleto de $45 (dólares) les da a los visitantes acceso a más de 25 restaurantes y establecimientos de bebidas, junto con un brazalete de seguridad, un mapa del evento e información sobre los platos de la gira, según la información del evento.

Galicia dijo que la CABA aún tiene que encontrar a alguien que pueda realizar cada parada del recorrido, por lo que se alienta a las personas a traer contenedores para llevar comida a casa.

The tour begins at 10 a.m. from Bethany Park, located at 1120 Central Ave. “We have been bringing people into these businesses so they can learn about their products,” said Edgar Galicia, CABA’s executive director. “An organized way to do this is by creating an event once a year that brings people from all over the place and makes them follow a map. So the tour was born to help people feel good about coming into this place and operating here.”

Galicia sees food as a welcoming token for integrating anyone, but especially Mexicans, into the area – and American society overall.

“Our culture is one of those that is very inclusive,” he said. “Even though we experience different hardships in Mexico, Mexican culture is one of the most welcoming and allows anybody to be integrated, so we are not exclusive of anybody. Just like that, our food has been a welcoming token for everyone. The flavors are so crisp, happy and delicious that people love the food.”

According to Galicia, the tour is structured for people of all ages to safely enjoy the area.

People can use bicycles, scooters or vehicles, or walk, he said.

The $45 ticket gives visitors access to more than 25 restaurants and drinking establishments, along with a security bracelet, an event map and information about the tour dishes, event information states. Galicia said the CABA has yet to find anyone who can take in every stop in one tour, so people are encouraged to bring containers to take food home.

Galicia invites community members to not only be part of the tour but also to follow the map, available on the CABA website, and visit the establishments they don’t get to visit during the tour at other times of the year.

“Come on Aug. 13 and be part of the fiesta,” he said. “Be part of the celebration. Discover what this area is with your map and try to see how many of the 25-plus dishes you can enjoy.”

“Mis gerentes solían decirme: ‘Será como beber de una boca de incendios, hasta que deje de hacerlo’. Y así fue”, dijo Sevilla-Pulido. “La escuela te enseña los fundamentos y el detrás de escena, pero si te enseñaran cosas del mundo real, tendrías información antigua antes de salir al ‘mundo real’. No me di cuenta de que la boca de incendios había desaparecido hasta que empecé a ayudar a entrenar a mis colegas.

Es una sensación increíble”.

Sevilla-Pulido aconseja a cualquiera que esté pensando en estudiar tecnología que lo pruebe.

“Es bastante fácil autoaprender muchas cosas y la mayor parte del aprendizaje es práctico”, dijo. “Es muy divertido y tiene muchas posibilidades”.

One of Sevilla-Pulido’s biggest challenges in the technology field was getting started, she said.

“My managers used to tell me, ‘It’s going to feel like drinking out of a fire hydrant – until it doesn’t.’ And it did,” Sevilla-Pulido said.

“School teaches you the groundwork and the behind the scenes, but if they taught you real-world stuff, you’d have old information before you got out into ‘the real world.’I didn’t realize the fire hydrant had disappeared until I started helping train my colleagues. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Sevilla-Pulido advises anyone considering studying technology to try it.

“Pretty easy to self-teach a lot of things in it and most of your learning is hands-on,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun and has a lot of possibilities.”

urante el último mes hemos sido testigos de un incremento en los precios de muchos productos y servicios, así como de las tasas de interés en la reserva federal. Estas semanas la conversación sobre temas económicos gira en torno a crisis que está por venir. ¿Cómo afectan estas noticias a nuestro estilo de vida y cómo prepararnos para tiempos difíciles?

Para dar un ejemplo, el aumento de la gasolina nos afecta de manera directa, porque la usamos para transportarnos diariamente. Como un dominó, la gasolina también afecta el precio de todos los productos que compramos, ya que tienen que ser transportados desde su lugar de origen hasta el supermercado.

Por otro lado, si usamos una tarjeta de crédito para comprar la comida y nuestros gastos diarios, pagamos intereses extra por el uso del crédito.

El incremento del costo de vida es una realidad para la que hay que estar preparados. La mejor manera para hacerlo es estar conscientes sobre nuestra realidad y llevar un control sobre nuestras finanzas personales. ¿Cuánto gano? ¿Cuánto gasto? ¿Qué deudas tengo y cuánto pago por ellas? ¿Qué hacer en caso de una emergencia familiar o frente a la pérdida del empleo? ¿Debería contratar un seguro? La respuesta a esas preguntas depende de las características y necesidades de cada uno de nosotros.

En la mayoría de los casos, las acciones a tomar más son sencillas de lo que parece.

De 2003 a 2022 lo único que parecía haber cambiado era el número de víctimas.

En estos años algo tampoco ha cambiado: el sistema migratorio de Estados Unidos. Así que creo que ya es momento de reconocer que tenemos un sistema cruel, injusto y mortal. Llevamos décadas discutiendo cómo hacer realidad uno mejor y los políticos,

buscando aire, en la caja de acero de un tráiler que no podía abrirse desde el interior. El aire acondicionado no estaba funcionando. El agua se acabó. Y la vida también.

Murieron 53 personas. Se trata ya de la peor tragedia migratoria en la historia reciente de Estados Unidos. Pero no es un evento inédito. Casi todos los días mueren inmigrantes en su camino al norte. En el año fiscal de 2020 murieron 247 personas en la frontera, según datos oficiales de la Patrulla Fronteriza estadounidense. En 2021, fallecieron 557. Este año, cuando se espera la llegada de más inmigrantes, podría ser peor.

El camión estaba parado en un camino poco transitado a las afueras de San Antonio y el sol, el brutal sol, era abrasador. Las temperaturas de ese lunes superaron los 100 grados Fahrenheit (o casi 38 grados Celsius) y el tráiler se convirtió en un horno.

Conforme el mundo se calienta, experimentando condiciones climáticas más extremas, las ondas de calor son cada vez más frecuentes. En esa carretera con el pavimento hirviendo, en ese tráiler sofocante con seres humanos dentro, vimos una de las imágenes más vívidas y desgarradoras de la intersección entre la migración y el cambio climático.

No dejo de pensar en la posibilidad de que quizás estarían vivos si ese camión hubiera pasado por ahí el martes. El día después de la tragedia cayó una tormenta en San Antonio, y la temperatura bajó.

Maldito lunes. Y también maldito el cruel sistema que mata a tantos inmigrantes.

Esta es una historia que se repite. En 2003 viajé a Victoria, Texas, para cubrir una noticia similar. Decenas de inmigrantes habían sido amontonados en la parte de atrás de un tráiler. Tampoco tenían aire acondicionado ni agua suficiente. Ante la imposibilidad de abrir la puerta, hicieron un pequeño hueco —donde estaba una de las luces de freno— y por turnos se acercaban a respirar aire fresco. Pero no fue suficiente. Cuando descubrieron el tráiler, sin chofer, había 17 personas sin vida, incluyendo un niño de cinco años. Dos adultos más morirían más tarde en el hospital.

Tras esa cobertura periodística escribí un libro —Morir en el intento— como advertencia, y pensando que este tipo de tragedias no se repetiría. Me equivoqué.

Cuando mi jefa, la incansable María Martínez, me llama a la casa, tiemblo. Casi siempre es algo grave. La penúltima vez que lo hizo terminé en Ucrania, poco después del inicio de la guerra.

Y el lunes pasado, sólo me preguntó si estaba al tanto de lo que ocurría en Texas. “This is bad, mister Ramos”, me dijo. Tenía razón.

Fue un déjà vu. Se trataba de un tráiler muy parecido,

sencillamente, no se ponen de acuerdo.

Es frustrante ver la pelea entre el presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, y el gobernador de Texas, Greg Abbott, después de esta nueva tragedia. Abbott le echa la culpa a la “política de fronteras abiertas” de Biden y el presidente responde que este no es el momento de politizar una tragedia y culpa, a su vez, a los traficantes de personas. Mientras tanto, siguen muriendo inmigrantes en la frontera.

Y en este momento el escenario es apremiante: con el fin del programa “Quédate en México”, como decidió recientemente la Corte Suprema, se cree que muchas personas más intentarán cruzar.

Ya sabemos que los muros no sirven. Desde que la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos existe, ha sido porosa. Eso no ha cambiado ni va a cambiar. También sabemos que es natural que las personas más pobres y vulnerables del continente busquen lugares más seguros y prósperos para vivir. Para muchas de ellas, ese lugar es Estados Unidos. Huir de la guerra, de las pandillas, de la pobreza, de la falta de sistemas sólidos de salud y educación, de la corrupción y de la ausencia de oportunidades, afectadas aún más por las consecuencias de la pandemia, no es un crimen.

Sólo en mayo fueron detenidas más de 239.000 personas que entraron ilegalmente a Estados Unidos. Es un récord. Esto podría ser una señal de que en este año fiscal se rompa otro récord de personas sin documentos cruzando al país. Estados Unidos tiene la capacidad y la obligación moral de proteger a muchos de esos refugiados.

El problema es que no hay un sistema eficiente, generoso y justo que permita atenderlos a todos.

Tenemos que aceptar que el límite de inmigrantes legales que Estados Unidos acepta anualmente es totalmente insuficiente. El sistema tiene que adaptarse a la nueva realidad. Imponer cifras, como hemos visto, no tiene ningún impacto en la frontera.

Conclusión: es necesario ampliar la migración legal y crear un nuevo sistema para evitar más tragedias como la de San Antonio y Victoria. La muerte nunca debe ser parte de la ecuación migratoria.

Si los futuros inmigrantes y refugiados supieran que hay maneras seguras y confiables de entrar a Estados Unidos, estoy seguro de que no se arriesgarían cruzando con sus hijos por el río Bravo, ni se aventurarían en el desierto a la mitad de la noche o se meterían en una caja sin aire acondicionado en pleno verano.

Pero no tengo muchas esperanzas. Todas las que tuve se han ido desinflando.

How much do I spend? What debts do I have and how much do I pay for them? What to do in case of a family emergency or in the face of job loss? Should I buy insurance? The answer to these questions depends on the characteristics and needs of each one of us. In most cases, the actions to take are simpler than it seems.

“It is devastating that a celebration of America was ripped apart by our uniquely American plague,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said during a news conference. “I’m furious because it does not have to be this way; ... while we celebrate the Fourth of July just once a year, mass shootings have become a weekly — yes, weekly — American tradition.”

The motives for the shooting remain unclear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE 2626 East 28th Street, the longtime former home of the Leroy ‘Satchel’ Paige family, is to be redeveloped into a center for telling the story of hard work and hardship, family love and friendship, and an iconic commitment to excellence and genuine community pride.

The purpose of this RFQ/P is to solicit and select a Construction Manager (CMAR) firm that will work with Pitch Perfect Collaborative, Multistudio and their consultants to assist in pre-construction activities (including estimating, site investigation, project phasing and scheduling) as well as construction services.

PROJECT PROGRAM Site and Grounds – Parking, Sidewalks/Paving, Covered Terrace, Landscaping, Restoration of 2626 East 28th to include Exhibits and Community Office Space, Support Building to include Retail Shop, Coffee Bar, Community Room, Restrooms SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS Organize your RFQ/P response using the following outline. Please separate each section with dividers or tabs using the appropriate section labels.

SECTION 1 – LETTER OF INTEREST-A one-page letter of interest that includes: a synopsis of the firm, business principles and distinguishing characteristics; approach to completing this project, community engagement and efforts to include DEIB subcontractors; primary contact information and signed by the principal-in-charge. Acknowledgement of receipt of any addenda.

SECTION 2 – EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS-Please address each criterion listed below as it relates to your firm’s relevant experience and qualifications. Provide your firm’s history and project organization structure and responsibilities utilizing an organization chart if necessary. Provide experience of all key personnel proposed to complete this project. Provide client references for each key individual if possible. Identify the individual/team and the main point of contact to completion. (The Owner reserves the right to determine the acceptability of these individuals). Any changes in key staff must be reviewed and approved by the Owner and the Owner’s consultants. The following positions on the Project Team are anticipated to be described: Project Manager and/or Pre-construction Manager, Site Superintendent. A. Describe your past or proposed efforts towards including MBE/WBE contractor/subcontractor participation.

B. Identify projects your firm completed with a similar size and scope to the project. Which members of the proposed team were involved? C. Identify and describe any claims, lawsuits or legal settlements your firm has had in the past 5 years or currently pending.

SECTION 3-SCOPE OF SERVICES-The Owner requests proposals to include complete Construction Management/General Contracting services to provide pre-construction assistance and construction of the project. Services will be contracted using an Owner modified AIA A133, with A201 General Conditions.

Demonstrate experience and approach in providing pre-construction services. Describe your estimating methodology during the design phase, prior to the establishment of a Guaranteed Maximum Price. How do you provide accurate and reliable cost data? How do you assist in the development of design options to react to market conditions? Describe your approach and timeline on establishing a GMP. Describe your approach to ensuring quality control during pre-construction and construction. Provide an example of a detailed project schedule used on a prior project, as well as short term “look-ahead” schedule, and describe how they are generated, updated, and utilized throughout the project. Identify any other unique challenges/approaches that will assist the Owner with a successful project.

SECTION 4 – FIRM CAPACITY AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT -It is expected that your firm has the current capabilities and capacity to complete the project. To help the Owner evaluate your firm’s capacity and schedule management capabilities, please provide the following:1. Based on your current workforce and staffing, list your firm’s currently contracted projects. 2.Please provide your firm’s available bonding capacity. 3.Describe your firms’ approach to assuring safety throughout the project. Include reference to safety training, resumes of individuals on the team responsible for safety, and frequency of safety inspections.

SECTION 5 – BUDGET-Provide a budget opinion for the project. The following guidance shall be utilized when preparing budgets. 1. Budget based on design intent with the understanding these are incomplete documents. 2.Provide qualifications & assumptions. 3.Include recommended design and construction contingency. 4.Reference the cost matrix for items to be included with the construction budget. 5.Budgets shall exclude all utility fees, tap/development fees, traffic impact fees, etc.

SECTION 6 – REFERENCES-1. Provide a list of local/regional projects completed or begun within the last 5 years. 2.Provide a minimum of three references.

SECTION 7 – FEES AND INSURANCE-Based on Cost of Work to be reimbursed and not be to be reimbursed are defined in Articles 7 and 8 of AIA A102 – please indicate any variances. Provide: Lump sum pre-construction phase fee and describe billing methodology, Fixed percentage of direct cost of work construction phase fee and estimated general conditions costs.

SECTION 8 – SCHEDULE-Based upon information please provide an opinion of project construction schedule.

Acceptance and Rejection-The Owner reserves the right to select any or reject any and all proposals in their best interest. The Owner also reserves the right to pre-qualify any or all Candidates or reject any or all Candidates as unqualified, including without limitation the right to reject any or all nonconforming, nonresponsive, unbalanced, or conditional qualifications. The Owner is not responsible for cost incurred in preparation of this proposal. Proposals will not be returned and will become the property of the Owner once submitted. By submitting a proposal all Candidates agree to the terms and conditions of this RFQ/P and the RFQ/P will become part of the awarded Candidates contract.

The vehicle features focused on safety can pay offer returns in other ways by helping to reduce accidents, sparing costly deductibles, and keeping your driving record pristine. *Hybrid models: There are several benefits of owning a hybrid vehicle, including better gas mileage and lower emissions, lower fuel consumption, and lower fuel consumption. These vehicles combine two types of motorizations.
