Within the center, a high percentage of seniors speak Spanish or Vietnamese, Miller explained. Thus, seniors get to communicate in their native language with someone young and for students to practice their second language with a patient listener, she said. This year’s visits produced a special moment for Miller and others. There’s a regular senior visitor who speaks Arabic, she said. Usually, he sits alone, smiling at everyone around him. According to Miller, one student, originally from Egypt, spoke to him and made his day. “They didn’t want to separate and had a wonderful conversation,” Miller said. “The moments when a student especially impacts one of our seniors makes it all worthwhile. He was so delighted to speak to someone who understood his language, and we were tickled pink for him – to see him so excited and happy that he could speak to someone.” Miller, who has worked at Don Bosco for the past 28 years, has seen the visits’ impact evolve. Sometimes, students who are part of the visits join a service group and get involved with the community. Other times, the students make special return visits. For example, a group that visited two years ago will return to do a service project during November at the center, she said. “The relationship has just grown and strengthened over the years,” Miller said. “The young adults always seem to enjoy coming here, and we invite them back. We’re happy to maintain the relationship. We know they’re busy, but if they have time and want to come back, they’re welcome.”

His passion to serve his community as a peace officer, according to his family, intensified, prompting him in 2020 to successfully apply to the NKC Police Department. As a rookie officer, Vasquez earned $52,000, the annual post-academy NKC police officer’s starting salary. A fitness and sports enthusiast who played baseball and football, Vasquez might’ve begun his professional career as a Major League Baseball rookie drawing $700,000 a year or a National Football League rookie making a minimum base salary of $705,000. But Daniel Vasquez was called to serve, not by entertaining fans as a professional athlete, but by protecting people. He’s the second officer from the 171st Entrance Officer Class of the Regional Police Academy killed in the line of duty. Fellow graduate, Independence, Mo., Police Officer Blaize Madrid-Evans was killed last September. The assault on Officers Vasquez and Madrid-Evans and all law enforcement officers is an assault on every one of us and our community. We appoint police officers as guardians to uphold and defend the values enshrined in our laws. As a society, we cannot accept or tolerate attacks on those guardians; “their very existence … is a declaration of the values of the community,” wrote Cedric Alexander, a member of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Among the highest of those values, he wrote, is a commitment to law. Officer Vasquez and his family must’ve looked on his police academy graduation, his happy engagement to Katie and his respected position in the community as attaining the American Dream. The dream was buried last Wednesday in the Northland’s White Chapel Memorial Gardens. But Officer Vasquez’s righteous legacy wasn’t undone -- the law he loved and died defending lives on.

ay pocas cosas más patéticas y vergonzosas que una H dictadura intente silenciar una

canción. Y así pasa en Cuba. Desde que salió la canción “Patria y vida” a principios de 2021, el régimen de La Habana ha tratado de censurarla. Pero una cosa es prohibir que salga en la radio y la televisión oficial, y otra muy distinta es tratar de erradicar un canto de lucha que tararean en su mente (y a todo pulmón en las calles de la isla en julio del año pasado) muchísimos cubanos. Eso no pueden hacerlo. Ni podrán. Lo prohibido es tentador. Basta que un gobierno diga que algo no se puede oír para buscarlo. Estas son algunas de las estrofas que han hecho temblar al régimen cubano: No más mentiras Mi pueblo pide libertad, no más doctrinas Ya no gritemos patria o muerte sino patria y vida Y empezar a construir lo que soñamos Lo que destruyeron con sus manos Que no siga corriendo la sangre Por querer pensar diferente ¿Quién les dijo que Cuba es de ustedes? Si mi Cuba es de toda mi gente La dictadura cubana no puede meter a una canción a la cárcel. Pero sí puede encarcelar a uno de sus coautores, Maykel Castillo Pérez, mejor conocido como el Osorbo. “Maykel iba caminando por La Habana cuando unos agentes de policía lo interceptaron para hacerle preguntas y trataron de arrestarlo”, reportó Amnistía Internacional. Días después, el 18 de mayo de 2021, regresaron por él. “Agentes de seguridad se presentaron en su domicilio y lo detuvieron. Está recluido en la Prisión Provincial de Pinar del Río por cargos de ‘atentado’, ‘resistencia’, ‘evasión de presos o detenidos’ y ‘desórdenes públicos’”, añade el informe. Y todo por cantar una canción. Maykel fue enjuiciado y sentenciado a nueve años de “privación de libertad”, según informó la Fiscalía General de la República de Cuba. Así que hasta cantar en Cuba es peligroso. También poner algo en tus redes sociales que no le guste a la dictadura. El artista visual Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara recibió una sentencia de cinco años de prisión por publicar fotos en sus redes en las que utilizaba la bandera cubana en un acto artístico. Es fácil encontrar las fotos de Otero en un performance que llamó “La bandera es de todos”: se le ve sencillamente con la bandera cubana sobre los hombros. Y las acusaciones en su contra no pueden ser más vagas. El tribunal, dice el informe, consideró que a la bandera “se le utiliza en actos denigrantes, acompañados de expresiones notoriamente ofensivas e irrespetuosas, menospreciando los sentimientos de nacionalidad y orgullo que le profesa el pueblo cubano a nuestra enseña patria”. Por eso Luis Manuel está en prisión. La represión en Cuba se ha incrementado desde las protestas prodemocracia del 11 de julio de 2021. Así lo denuncia Amnistía Internacional: “Tras las protestas pacíficas celebradas en toda

la nación, las autoridades cubanas, con el presidente DíazCanel a la cabeza, han intensificado una política de represión, aplicada durante décadas, que criminaliza la protesta pacífica y encarcela y maltrata a personas cubanas de toda condición sólo por expresar sus opiniones”. Alrededor de 700 personas siguen detenidas tras las protestas del año pasado, según la organización Cubalex. Imposible confirmar de manera independiente cuántos son exactamente. Pero lo que sí sabemos es que Maykel está encarcelado, y Jade de la Caridad, su hija pequeña, pidió de manera pública su liberación. Con sus pocos años de edad, ella apareció en un video que el cantante Yotuel, otro de los coautores de “Patria y vida”, hizo público en la Cumbre de las Américas en Los Ángeles. “Señores de la Cumbre, me dirijo a ustedes, aunque no los conozca, desde Cuba. Quiero hablarles sobre mi papá, que está preso por solamente cantar una canción”, se escucha a Jade de la Caridad, mientras ve directamente a la cámara. “Él no ha hecho nada, por favor, ¿me pueden ayudar a liberarlo? Lo quiero mucho y lo extraño”. Las dictaduras destruyen familias, como la de Maykel, e infancias, como la de Jade de la Caridad. ¿Cómo puede vivir tranquilamente una niña en Cuba luego de saber que a su papá lo arrestaron sólo por cantar una canción? “No sabemos cómo salir de esto, sabemos cómo funcionan, cómo es el proceso de entrar a una dictadura”, me dijo Yotuel en una entrevista reciente. “Te pueden condenar a muerte por decir ‘Cuba libre’; te pueden echar 30 años por salir a manifestarte libremente; te pueden echar 15, 20 o 30 años por recibir una recarga de teléfono mía o de alguien que diga ‘usted recibió recarga de un disidente, y esto es un atentado a la patria y eso es sedición’. Hacen lo que les da la gana”. Una de las principales características de las dictaduras es la intolerancia, es esa imposibilidad de aceptar críticas y puntos de vista opuestos. Y Cuba es la reina de la intolerancia. No sólo ahí encarcelan a quienes piden un cambio democrático —luego de 63 años de tiranía— sino también a los que cantan y suben sus expresiones artísticas a internet. Algo se rompió ya en la isla. Miguel Díaz-Canel y sus compinches deben tener muchísimo miedo, tanto que una canción los pone a temblar: la prohíben y encarcelan y detienen por cantarla. Se saben vulnerables y temen que se acerque el momento del cambio. Y eso explica el aumento de la represión. Deben estar aterrados de ver las imágenes en Sri Lanka, donde miles de ciudadanos hartos tomaron el palacio presidencial, obligaron a huir al presidente y se metieron a su residencia y hasta su piscina. Claro, Cuba no es Sri Lanka y no sabemos lo que va a pasar en la isla. Pero la inconformidad con el régimen crece. Pero ya sabemos una cosa, sabemos cómo suena la canción de la libertad.

TPS for Venezuelans extended until 2024 TPS para venezolanos es extendido hasta 2024

l Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, en inglés) anunció la extensión del Estatus de Protección Temporal - TPS para Venezuela hasta el 10 de marzo de 2024. La extensión de 18 meses será efectiva a partir del 10 de septiembre de 2022. Solo los beneficiarios bajo la designación existente de Venezuela, y que ya residían en los Estados Unidos al 8 de marzo de 2021, son elegibles para volver a registrarse para el TPS bajo esta extensión.

Si aún no han presentado su solicitud ante el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de los Estados Unidos (USCIS), deberán hacerlo antes del 9 de septiembre de 2022. Los venezolanos que llegaron a Estados Unidos después del 8 de marzo de 2021 no son elegibles para el TPS. Todavía son elegibles para solicitar asilo y deben hacerlo dentro de un año de su entrada a los EE. UU. “Después de una cuidadosa consideración, y en consulta con el Secretario de Estado, hoy estoy extendiendo esa designación”, dijo el Secretario de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro N. Mayorkas. Solicitudes pendientes de TPS USCIS continuará procesando las solicitudes pendientes. No necesitan presentar ninguna de las dos solicitudes de nuevo. El USCIS concederá al solicitante el TPS hasta el 10 de marzo de 2024. The 18-month extension will be effective from September 10, 2022. Only beneficiaries under Venezuela’s existing designation, and who were already residing in the United States as of March 8, 2021, are eligible

to re-register for TPS under this extension. If they have not yet applied with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), they should file their applications prior to September 9, 2022. Venezuelans who arrived in the United States after March 8, 2021, are not eligible for TPS. Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Lascon; parents, Albert and Mary (Perez) Lascon; his brothers, Robert, Mike, and John Lascon. Albert is survived by his son, R. Anthony Lascon (Melissa) of Smithville, MO; his grandchildren, Danielle Lascon Zicarelli (Carl) and Anthony Lascon (Briana), both of Kansas City, MO; two great-grandchildren, Averly and Breland Lascon; his three siblings, many nieces and nephews, and several close loving cousins in Minnesota. Albert was extremely proud of his Hispanic heritage throughout his life. Growing up in Kansas City’s Westside, Albert attended West Junior Elementary School before the family moved to the Westport area where he attended Westport High School, graduating in 1959. It was there he met his high school sweetheart, Sharon. Albert and Sharon married in August of 1961 and remained in love until her passing in May of 2013. After her passing, Albert wrote Sharon notes daily and kept the house the way she left it. Albert retired from GATX Railroad after a severe leg

injury. Albert cared for his disabled brother at home for over 20 years. Albert was an avid sports fan especially those he participated in growing up, boxing and basketball. He took up golf later in life competing with his close cousin, Abe Garcia. The Lascon family would like to thank the following: St. Luke’s Hospital (Plaza) and all the doctors and nurses on the 6th floor north unit. Harbor Hospice staff and nurses, especially Kathy Dixon, KCK Sanitation employees, Eujohn Coleman and Eugene Rozell, for taking the time to brighten his day each week, and Craig with Ever-Ready Pest Control for his long visits.
