What was once an achievement gap in academic performance that held fairly steady and was largely confined to economically disadvantaged communities has mushroomed, affecting large swaths of students across economic and class lines. First came the two-year disruption of academic normalcy caused by the pandemic. Students lacked the appropriate software, reliable computer and internet access, support and sometimes motivation to successfully adapt to remote learning. There was a steep learning curve for educators initially untrained and ill-equipped for virtual learning. The pandemic with its attendant difficulties was the first in a succession of dramatic set backs jeopardizing academic achievement. At the start of the 2021-2022 school year, surging Covid-19 cases forced rolling school closures. Students and school staff were still feeling anxiety over contracting Covid or having family members at risk. Many struggled with mental health challenges. Schools saw high rates of student absenteeism, violence andNow,misbehavior.K-12schools nationwide start school bedeviled by critical teacher and staff shortages, added security concerns, and the imperative to tackle critical learning loss. The effect of the pandemic on learning, as measured by test scores has been enormous, reported the Brookings Institution, which tracked changes in math and reading test scores using data from 5.4 million students. Schools are instituting programs to miti gate the decline in academic performance, partially financed by the federal govern ment. The American Rescue Plan passed in 2021 included Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief, which provided about $200 billion to public schools for pan demic-related expenses. Of that, lawmakers earmarked $22 billion for “evidence-based interventions” to address learning loss. School districts are employing various methods, according to independent reviews of district and state spending plans. Strate gies to achieve academic recovery include accelerated learning, after-school programs, adding days to school calendars and hours to school days, mentoring, summer learning andParentaltutoring.involvement plays a key role. Students catching up and succeeding aca demically demands vigilance in a close collaborative effort involving parents and educators. They must work in concert to identify students who are struggling, reassure them and enroll them in programs where they can make up for missed learning and forge confidently ahead. We can’t allow this generation’s education to be another casualty of the pandemic.

Cuando Trump lanzó su primera candidatura presidencial en junio de 2015, muchos sonamos la voz de alarma. Su discurso era abiertamente racista —le llamó criminales y “violadores” a los inmigrantes mexicanos—, sus ataques a los periodistas eran constantes —a mí me expulsó de una conferencia de prensa con su guardaespaldas—y estaba dispuesto a decir cualquier cosa con tal de llegar a la Casa Blanca. Pero no nos hicieron caso. Millones de electores se tragaron el cuento. Efectivamente, llegó a la presidencia a través de los votos. Y cuatro años más tarde, cuando perdió la elección de 2020, ya no se quería ir y, como han señalado las audiencias del comité especial de la Cámara de Representantes que investiga el asalto del 6 de enero, incitó una insurrección para quedarse ilegalmente en la Casa Fracasó.Blanca.PeroEstados Unidos nunca estuvo más cerca de perder su democracia. Trump puso en peligro el maravilloso experimento comenzado en 1776. Los votantes no están contentos con la división en el país ni con las opciones políticas que tienen. Muchos no quieren a Trump pero tampoco al presidente Joe Biden. El 64 por ciento de los votantes demócratas preferirían como candidato presidencial en 2024 a una persona distinta a Biden, según una encuesta de The New York Times. Pero en esa misma encuesta Biden, hipotéticamente, le ganaría otra vez a Trump, aunque por un margen muy estrecho. En 2024, Biden tendría 81 años y Trump 78. ¿Dónde está la nueva generación de líderes estadounidenses? En otros países, como México y Colombia, cuando el electorado ha querido salir de décadas de partidos políticos tradicionales, los votos se fueron a la izquierda (con Andrés Manuel López Obrador y Gustavo Petro). Pero en Estados Unidos una posible salida es hacia abajo: candidatos más jóvenes dentro de los mismos partidos. Estados Unidos, que ha moldeado lo que consideramos moderno —el país de Google, Apple, Hollywood, Netflix, Tesla, Instagram, Twitter, Amazon…— está atorado entre dos opciones poco reconfortantes. Y, sin embargo… Quizás es mi alma de inmigrante, pero creo que, al final de cuentas, Estados Unidos hará lo correcto y salvará su democracia. Este es un extraordinario experimento del que millones nos hemos beneficiado y del cual hemos aprendido por más de dos siglos. Y hoy está amenazado. El ego de Trump es como un hoyo negro: lo chupa todo. Pero no podrá contra millones de personas que, con su voto, están dispuestas a hacer lo correcto. Hoy, esa es la apuesta: un futuro sin Trump.

Other signs, defined by Hall-Flavin and others, include hostility, reluctance to cooperate andSomesarcasm.mental health experts claim that the best way to address passive-aggressive behavior is with assertive communication. Maria Daniela Pipas and Mohammad Jaradat define assertive communication as “the ability to speak and interact in a manner that considers and respects the rights of others while also standing up for your rights, needs and personal boundaries.”Othermental health experts recommend that a person with a passive-aggressive partner remain calm and seek appropriate moments to express his or her feelings to that partner. In some cases, a therapist’s office might serve as an appropriate place to share those feelings, given the therapist’s role of helping individuals sort through emotional issues and the confidential, non-judgmental atmosphere.
