Cuando era niño en Michoacán, México, Jesús Adrián Gachuz soñaba con ser dueño de una panadería.

Ahora, como hombre que reside en Kansas City, Missouri, Gachuz ha hecho realidad su sueño. En abril de 2021, Gachuz abrió la Panadería Don Chago con su esposa e hijos.

“Tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo y decidí hacerlo”, dijo.

Cuando su sueño se hizo realidad, Gachuz no podía creerlo.

“Para mí, fue más como un sueño”, dijo. “No podía creer que me estaba pasando a mí. Fue algo surrealista”.

As a boy in Michoacan, Mexico, Jesus Adrian Gachuz dreamed of owning a bakery.

As a man residing in Kansas City, Missouri, Gachuz has made his dream come true. In April 2021, Gachuz opened the Don Chago Bakery with his wife and children.

“I had the opportunity to do it and decided to do it,” he said.

When his dream became a reality, Gachuz couldn’t believe it.

“For me, it was more like a dream,” he said. “I couldn’t believe that it was happening to me. It was something surreal.”

Located in Independence, Missouri, the bakery offers Mexican bread, cakes, tama les, cookies and desserts. Gachuz’s favorite Mexican bread the store offers is the concha.

“We are very famous because of our bread,” he said. “I think it is because …, whenever I’m baking, I do it with my heart.”

All of Gachuz’s recipes are family recipes, he said. It was his family that inspired his dream, 3a>

Monarch butterflies are among the most rec ognizable butterfly species in North America. In addition to being an international symbol of the environment, monarch butterflies con tribute to the health of the planet. Pollinators are critical to global food security and healthy natural ecosystems, but they’re disappearing at an alarming rate.

At this unique event, you will learn about pol linator habitats and about some of the challenges pollinators are facing today. You’ll also discover sustainable solutions that can help overcome those challenges.

The event includes hands-on activities, games, presentations, performances, and more than 15 exhibitors, including the Kansas City Zoo, the Saint Louis Zoo, the Missouri Department of Conservation, Monarch Watch, Missourians for Monarchs and Westside CAN Center Monarch Way Station.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to see and take photos of the uniquely decorated Monarch Boxcar, which will be displayed on the tracks adjacent to Haverty Family Yards. And in addition to the free event, food trucks and vendors will also be on-site.

Guests will also have the opportunity to donate to support the Boxcar Tour’s goal of support ing reforestation in the monarch overwintering forests of Mexico. Funds raised from the tour will be used to plant 60,000 oyamel trees at El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Micho acán, Mexico to help re-establish the monarch population.

Monarch butterflies are a symbol of rebirth

En tren recorreremos el camino de la migración de otoño que realizó la monarca desde Canadá, pasando por EE.UU. y llegando a México.

Este viaje lo hará una mariposa simbólica. Un artista mexicano realizará una escultura que viajará dentro de un vagón pintado. Se desplazará en tren desde Windsor (Canadá) hasta Morelia (México) con parada en 5 ciudades clave: Chicago, Kansas City, Dos Laredo’s, Monterrey y San Luis Potosí antes de finalizar en Morelia.

En cada escala, los clubes rotarios organizarán eventos de participación pública diseñados para promover la conservación y la concientización de la mariposa monarca, jardines polinizadores y recaudar fondos para los 60,000 árboles en Michoacán.

The more prominent and well-known eastern migra tion travels south from Canada along the I-35 corridor, known as the “Monarch Highway”, through the central United States ending deep into Mexico. The Monarch Highway is directly along the KCS network.

The survival of the monarch species depends on the sacred Oyamel tree that grows in Micho acán, Mexico. The monarchs winter clinging to these trees that protect them from the rain and the chill. Deforestation over the past decades has fragmented their winter habitat. The disappear ance of the Oyamel forest is not only affecting the monarch butterfly, whose population has decreased by 80% in just 20 years, but also the local communities that rely on it for their liveli hoods, water, healthy soil, and erosion control.

In 2021, KCS launched the Monarch Mariposa project with support from Suburban Lawn and Garden and Rotary.

Through these efforts, we were able to raise $10K and receive a grant from the KCS Chari table Fund and Rotary to plant 10,000 Oyamel trees in El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary as well as implement a potable water system outside of the sanctuary. Our goal in 2022 is to raise enough to plant 60,000 Oyamel trees.

The Oyamel is an evergreen conifer with dark and rough bark, 40-50 m high and a firm trunk 2 m in diameter. The flat, acicular leaves are grouped in a spiral, are dark green and 15-35 cm long. The fruit is a cylindrical cone 10-18 cm long, solitary, with a short almost sessile peduncle, a rounded apex and wedge-shaped scales

By train, we will travel the path of the Fall migration made by the monarch from Canada, through the USA, and arriving to Mexico.

This trip will be made by a symbolic butter fly. A Mexican artist will make a sculpture that will travel within a painted boxcar. It will move by train from Windsor (Canada) to Morelia (Mexico) stopping in 5 key cities: Chicago, Kansas City, Dos Laredo’s, Monterrey, and San Luis Potosí before ending in Morelia.

At each stopover, Rotary clubs will host public engagement events designed to promote monarch conservation & awareness, pollinator gardens, and raise funds for the 60,000 trees in Michoacán.

The monarch sculpture and its replicas will be permanently kept in each city at the host club’s headquarters.

The games will be played at Arrow head Stadium, which will require renovations to meet FIFA standards for staging a soccer game. Who’s going to bankroll the needed $50 million or more? Reportedly, turnstiles will have to be added; the playing field reconfigured; seats removed; and space made for extra security and international reporters and other media.

Kansas City business, civic, sports, government and tourism leaders worked years putting together the World Cup bid – seven years, according to Kathy Nelson, president of the Kansas City Sports Commission. Their efforts are admirable.

How is it, though, that through all those years of planning, procuring the financing for needed renovations to Arrowhead was overlooked?

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas suggested “private fundraising” in addi tion to tapping the state. But Missouri Gov. Parsons, who signed a bill back in June waiving the sales tax on 2026 World Cup tickets, nixed the prospect of the state financing the stadium renovations. When asked who would be paying, he reportedly replied, “At this point, no one knows.” Nelson has reportedly refused to answer questions about the financing.

So two big questions remain. Will $50 million be enough to cover the cost of renovations? Who’s going to bear that cost?

In 2026, Kansas City will host a historic World Cup. It’ll be the first time for the international soccer competi tion to be shared by three countries; first time for Canada and first time in the 21st century for Mexico and the U.S. to host;

Ninguna otra niña en ninguna otra parte del mundo podría haber tenido esa posición. Sólo ella. Lo obvio: ese título no se lo ganó, le tocó. Lo heredó.

Ante ese gigantesco privilegio, el argumento en este 2022 es sencillo: no más reyes ni reinas. No los necesitamos. Son un mal precedente en sociedades que buscan mayor igualdad. Cuestan mucho, económica y simbólicamente: ¿cómo exigir naciones más justas e iguales si hay personas que, por herencia, merecen poder sobre el resto?

Sin embargo, en pleno siglo XXI, todavía hay 56 países que forman parte de una alianza voluntaria con el Reino Unido (llamada la Commonwealth o la Mancomunidad de Naciones) y 14 que son monarquías constitucionales. En esos casos las funciones del monarca británico son, sobre todo, simbólicas. Pero ya no tiene mucho sentido, por ejemplo, que un país como Antigua y Barbuda, en el Caribe, tenga ahora a Carlos III como rey. Por eso su primer ministro, Gaston Browne, anunció un plebiscito para convertir a la nación insular en una república en los próximo tres años. Barbados, por su parte, se convirtió en una república a finales de 2021 y en Jamaica hay un fuerte movimiento para hacer lo mismo.

Ese es el futuro: un mundo con menos monarquías.

La historia es imborrable. La reina Isabel II de Inglaterra fue una gran representante de la tradición, continuidad y fuerza de la monarquía británica. Pero también fue el símbolo de un pasado de colonialismo, abusos y racismo de un poderoso imperio. “La monarquía no sirve para nada”, le dijo en Londres a TheNewYorkTimesuna joven de 29 años. “No le hago caso a toda la fanfarria; es un escaparate doloroso de un pasado violento”.

El periódico —citando una encuesta de YouGov— sugiere que el apoyo a la monarquía aumenta con la edad. El 74 por ciento de los mayores de 65 años cree que es algo bueno para el Reino Unido, mientras que sólo el 24 por ciento de los jóvenes entre 18 y 24 años cree lo mismo.

Traducción: lo moderno es no ser, en lo posible, súbdito de un monarca.

A pesar de lo que algunos días pudiera parecer, el mundo avanza hacia sociedades más abiertas, democráticas y meritocráticas. En 2017, más de la mitad de los países eran democracias, según el Pew Research Center, frente a sólo el 24 por ciento en 1977. Y aunque algunas monarquías caen dentro de la definición técnica de democracia, una reina o un rey funge —en papel— como jefa o jefe de Estado.

En un planeta cada vez más diverso, multiétnico y multicultural, hemos educado a nuestros hijos e hijas a luchar por lo que quieran, no a pensar que merecen todo por herencia o por nacimiento. Es la meritocracia y el premio del esfuerzo como objetivo, a pesar de las enormes desigualdades y desventajas con que crecen millones de personas.

El acta de independencia de Estados Unidos tiene, desde mi punto de vista, una de las frases más contundentes jamás escritas en ese sentido: “Todos los seres humanos fueron

creados iguales”. Es, desde luego, un ideal. Pero claramente responde a una nueva nación que surgía en 1776 en oposición a una monarquía. El mensaje fue evidente: en este país el rey ya no gobierna.

La lucha por la Independencia de México, como muchas otras, fue para liberarse de la monarquía española y estableció, como lo indica la siempre útil edición de la Historia mínima de México editada por El Colegio de México, que “la soberanía reside originalmente en el pueblo”. No en el rey o en el virrey. Y esa simple pero poderosa idea cambió la historia de los mexicanos.

En América Latina venimos de una tradición antimonárquica.

Por eso, cuando algún dictadorzuelo latinoamericano —llámese Nicolás Maduro, Daniel Ortega o Miguel Díaz-Canel— actúa como si fuera rey, hay una fiera oposición. Llevamos más de 200 años luchando contra los que se creen divinamente superiores a los demás y se adjudican todos los poderes. Pero tarde o temprano caerán. Con peores hemos acabado.

Por ahora, la monarquía británica no corre ningún peligro. Es experta en el arte de la sobrevivencia política. Y tampoco existe una señal de cambio. El nuevo rey, Carlos III, no ha dado ninguna indicación de que pedirá disculpas por un pasado esclavista y mucho menos de que abrirá el diálogo con otros países sobre las dolorosas repercusiones del imperialismo. El juego de la monarquía —cualquier monarquía— es la permanencia. Así que lo único que les queda a algunos países que quieren un destino distinto —como lo hizo Barbados— es romper con los monarcas.

Durante los últimos días, dentro y fuera del estudio de televisión, he aprendido muchísimo de la extraordinaria vida de la reina Isabel II, de su carácter moral, su benevolencia, su devoción por los otros y su punzante sentido del humor. La serie de Netflix The Crown ha sido fundamental para humanizar a un personaje caracterizado por la impasividad del cargo. Y soy absolutamente respetuoso de los que prefieren ser súbditos en un reinado.

Pero estoy convencido que un mundo sin reyes y reinas es mucho mejor. Más libre, más democrático, más diverso, más igualitario. Hay que apostar por el mérito, el talento y el trabajo, no por la herencia. Por nuestros hijos y por las nuevas generaciones, ya es hora de que empecemos a contar los cuentos al revés.

Gachuz disfrutó trabajar con su padre, dijo.

Eventualmente, abandonó la escuela para ayudar a su familia. Luego, se casó y abrió su primera panadería en Michoacán.

Motivado por su hermano, decidió irse de México a Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor, dijo. Al establecerse en el área de Kansas City, trabajó en varias panaderías. Primero, trabajó en Reyna’s Mexican Bakery. Más tarde, trabajó para Laura’s Bakery. After leaving the business to work in roofing for a while, he was hired at Elvira’s Cakes in Kansas City, Missouri, where he has worked for 17 years.

This current outbreak continues to evolve, as public health agencies monitor the spread of monkeypox and learn more about the situation.

As of September 16, 2022, there have been no confirmed cases of monkeypox in Wyandotte County, and there have been 8 cases in the state of Kansas. For the general population of Wyan dotte County, the risk of getting monkeypox is low, but it’s important to stay up-to-date on the status of the virus in our area.

People usually get monkeypox through close personal contact, especially through sexual contact with someone who has symptoms. In a few cases, monkeypox can spread through prolonged, face-to-face contact or through contact with contaminated surfaces such as clothing or linens.

Monkeypox usually involves a blister-like rash, which can be itchy or painful. Mon keypox symptoms may also include flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, muscle aches and backache, headache and respiratory symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion or cough. Mon keypox symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus.

Testing for Monkeypox Currently, monkeypox testing is only avail able in certain circumstances. You must have symptoms and be examined by a healthcare provider to see if you are eligible for testing.

“It takes about 90 seconds to learn how to do hands-only CPR and it really is a simple, simple thing,” she said. “Once people build up the confi dence from doing it in a quick training, then they’re confident enough to use it, should they need to.”

“There are bystander laws that are in place that help pro tect individu als, should they perform CPR on someone, because it really is about stepping in and helping people in their communities and that’s what CPR really is about,” she said.

KC Chiefs come out on top of the LA Chargers 27-24 in Week 2

Week 2 game proved messy for both the Chiefs and the Chargers with injuries, penalties, and some close calls. Chiefs ended up victorious, but not after some tense plays.

The Chiefs had a slow start and ended up punting after the first drive. Chargers capi talized on their opportunity to take an early lead with a field goal. The Chargers scored an easy, open touchdown pass also in the first quarter to secure a 10-0 lead. The Chiefs running game didn’t work too well early on, but in the 2nd quarter they got into a groove and started passing and moving the ball down the field. The Chiefs ran 36 passing plays to only 18 rushing plays against the Chargers.
