Para el peruano y residente de Shawnee, Kansas, Enrique Aparicio, uno de los momentos más impactantes de su vida fue cuando su madre, Claudia, le dijo que tenía cáncer de mama.

For Peruvian native and Shawnee, Kansas, resident Enrique Aparicio, one of the most shocking moments of his life was when his mother Claudia told him she had breast cancer.

“One day, she came home and told me that she was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Aparicio recalled. “When she told me, I was surprised, and then I just felt very sad.”

Aparicio, whose story is being shared in Dos Mundos in observance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, still remembers taking his mother to the hospital for her treatments.

“I always wanted to be there for her and sup port her,” he said. “At the beginning, I didn’t understand how big … this illness (is) because my mother never told us how bad she felt.”

La experiencia le enseñó otras dos lecciones: 1) prestar atención a sus padres y 2) estar ahí para ellos.

Iranian state television has suggested that at least 41 protesters and police officers have been killed. An Associated Press count of official reports from authorities totaled at least 13 dead and more than 1,400 protesters detained.

The female-led protests are the most recent demonstrations of dissatisfaction with the Iranian government. Other protests, includ ing those earlier this year, have focused on issues such as water shortages in Isfahan and Khuzestan, and the price of foods and cooking oil.

Experts claim the latest demonstrations present one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s repressive Islamic rulers in years. The protests have reportedly united Iranians not only for women’s rights but also for other political and civil purposes, with Iranians fighting against high unemployment, corruption, political repression and soaring prices.

According to media outlets, U.S.-led sanc tions and the repressive ruling regime have frozen Iran’s economy at worse levels than those before 2012, when there also were pro tests. In addition, media outlets have reported how Iran’s currency, the rial, has severely dropped in value during the protests.

The protests are the latest in a country that drew international attention when Iranians led a revolution in 1979 that resulted in the ouster of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi and some protesters holding 52 Americans hostage. The Americans were released in January 1981, when Ronald Reagan became U.S. president.

Despite misgivings voiced by a few locally, the process for naming a new police chief in Kansas City, Mo., is advancing. Last Friday, the Board of Police Commissioners (BOPC) announced that it’s narrowed the search to an unspeci fied number of finalists. The five-member board will be meeting with them in the coming weeks; then Kansas Citians will have an opportunity to meet and question the finalists, we’ve been told.

A strong case can be made for engaging a new chief sooner rather than later, as some are advocating. Kansas Citians had a voice in helping define the character of the person chosen to lead the KCPD. Early last spring, a coalition of 16 community organizations held a series of seven listen ing sessions across Kansas City to gather input on what people want in the new police chief. Over a three-month period, the coali tion made up of business, civic, faith and social groups met with 300-plus people and the KCPD and recorded responses from 1,374 residents through online surveys. The coalition presented its findings to the

heavily impacted her quality of life, Aparicio shared.

“I remember every time after her treatment my mom was very tired,” he said. “She got very sad and she looked sick. My mom was always very strong, and day by day, cancer was ending her life.”

Aparicio’s mother went through many changes, including losing her hair and losing weight, but she never lost hope, he said.

“I think the hardest part for my mother was to know she had an illness that could kill her,” Aparicio said. “She always wanted to live and see the rest of her children (who were in Peru).”

Doctors gave Aparicio’s mother only six months to live, he recalled. She lived four years.

“My mom was fighting every day,” he said. “She did everything she could to live, but unfor tunately, she couldn’t make it.”

Aparicio remembers his mother as someone who was strong, happy and brave. Watching her go through cancer taught him an important lesson – “fight until the end,” he said.

The experience taught Aparicio two other lessons: 1) to pay attention to his parents and 2) to be there for them.

“Sometimes, I don’t think we fully under stand the process and the things they are going through,” he said.

Aparicio encourages others to appreciate their parents, particularly parents with cancer.

“You have them now, but you don’t know what could happen in one moment,” he said.

Public Sector Search and Consulting used the information to guide its “nation wide search for the next chief of Kansas City.” Public Sector is a firm hired by the BOPC in July to help find a new police chief. The firm whittled down the number of finalists from 21 candidates it screened. The finalists include officers both from within and outside the KCPD ranks.

Given the extent of community input, the BOPC is well-placed to select someone from among the finalists. The fact that two BOPC members are serving expired terms is beside the point; it doesn’t justify delay ing selection of a new chief. The same can be said of the Justice Department’s inves tigation into allegations of discrimination in the KCPD. The investigation could last indefinitely and perhaps yield insufficient evidence to prove criminal civil rights violations. Waiting to name a new chief won’t change the investigation’s outcome, whatever it is. Neither will it extend the expired terms of the two BOPC members. According to its Sep. 30 announcement, the commission was “thankful to have so many qualified candidates.” That speaks well of the finalists, one of whom will ultimately lead and shape the department; set the tone of the KCPD; and serve as an official liaison between officers, city officials and the public. Kansas Citians last spring identified the qualities they want in the new chief, and it informed the nationwide search.

Por supuesto que hay unacrisis en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Es una crisis humanitaria. Casi dos millones y medio de personashan cruzado de manera no autorizada en de octubre de 2021 a agosto de este año, según reporta la Patrulla Fronteriza estadounidense. Es un récord. Pero no hay ningunajustificación para la crueldad de engañar y enviar a refugiados a un lugar que desconocen.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) automatically extends the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (also known as Green Cards) to 24 months for lawful perma nent resi dents who file Form I-90, an Applica tion to Replace the Per manent Resident Card.

Lawful perma nent resi dents who correctly file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card may receive this extension. Form I-90 receipt notices had previously provided a 12-month extension of the validity of a Green Card.

USCIS has updated the language on Form I-90 receipt notices to extend the validity of a Green Card for 24 months for individuals with a newly filed Form I-90. On Sept. 26, USCIS began printing amended receipt notices for individuals with a pending Form I-90.

These receipt notices can be presented with an expired Green Card as evidence of continued status. This extension is expected to help applicants who experience longer processing times because they will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status as they await their renewed Green Card.

Empecemos por la realidad. La frontera entre México y Estados Unidos nunca va a estar totalmente sellada. Es porosa por naturaleza y por historia. De sus 3152 kilómetros de largo, solo hay barreras o cercas en unos 1200 kilómetros(o 700 millas). El resto está lleno de huecos. Y por más agentes que se pongan en los espacios abiertos, desiertos ymontañas, es prácticamente imposible cerrarla al tráfico de inmigrantes a pie.

Además, históricamente, los límites fronterizos fueron impuestos de manera arbitraria luego de la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos en 1848. Esto dejó familias, costumbres y trabajos divididos. Y un constante movimiento de personas y mercancías de un lado a otro. La frontera es una raya que se salta todo el tiempo, con papeles y sin ellos.

Así que cuando los republicanos dicen que están dispuestos a negociar una reforma migratoria —y la legalización de unos 10,5 millones de personas sin documentos— luego que se asegure la frontera, en realidad lo que están diciendo es que eso nunca va a ocurrir. Esa frontera nunca será impenetrable. Ni el traicionero río Bravo/Grande puede detener a muchos de quienes quieren cruzar.

La actual crisis en la frontera se debe a su vulnerabilidad —geográfica e histórica— y a que millones están huyendo del sur del continente luego de lo peor de la pandemia. Ellos hanvotado con sus pies. Y prefieren enfrentarse a los peligros del trayecto —y a los agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos— que quedarse en sus países con hambre, violencia, enfermedades o sin oportunidades para sus hijos.

Y el deseo y la necesidad de emigrar aumenta para las personas que viven en dictaduras brutales. Un ejemplo:Venezuela. Casi siete millones de venezolanos han huido de su país, según el Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidaspara los Refugiados (ACNUR). Hay muchas razones que losempujan fuera de Venezuela, incluyendo la represión política.

“El Estado venezolano utiliza los servicios de inteligencia y sus agentes para reprimir la disidencia en el país”, diceun reciente informe de las Naciones Unidas. “Esto conduce a la comisión de graves delitos y violaciones de los derechos humanos, incluidos actos de tortura y violencia sexual”. Uno

vuelo desde Texas hasta Martha’s Vineyard en Massachussets, con una parada en Florida. Los inmigrantes dicen haber sido engañados y, con la ayuda de un grupo de abogados y aprendiendo muy rápido, presentaron una demanda. Al final de cuentas, nada cambia en la frontera con las maniobras de DeSantis y Abbott. La crisis continúa. Solo en el pasado mes de agosto entraron, sin documentos, más de 251.000 inmigrantes.

Poco se puede hacer para evitar que tantos migrantes salgan de sus países. Invertir en el sur, incluso con las mejores intenciones, tomará años para dar resultados. Ante esta crisis humanitaria, Estados Unidos sigue demostrando que tiene la capacidad económica para absorber a estos recién llegados. Un reportaje reciente en The New York Times cuenta cómo un inmigrante venezolano llegó sin nada a Washington D. C. en julio y ahora tiene un trabajo que le paga hasta 700 dólares a la semana. Este es el tipo de historias personales que se repiten una y otra vez en América Latina y que alimentan laidea del “sueño americano”.

El deseo humano por una vida mejor es mucho más poderoso que cualquier barrera física. Esta es una frontera indomable. Y nuestra obligación, independientemente de las cifras, es tratar a estos inmigrantes y refugiados como quisiéramos que nos trataran a nosotros. Engañar a los inmigrantes para ganar puntos políticos es, también, engañarnos a nosotros.

What is SIDS?

SIDS is

that

between 1 month and 1 year of age.

Babies are at higher risk for SIDS if they:

*Sleep on their stomachs

*Sleep on soft surfaces, such as an adult mat tress, couch, or chair, or under soft coverings

*Sleep on or under soft or loose bedding

*Get too hot during sleep

*Are exposed to cigarette smoke in the womb or in their environment, such as at home, in the car, in the bedroom, or other areas

*Sleep in an adult bed with parents, other children, or pets; this situation is especially dangerous if:

-- The adult smokes, has recently had alcohol, or is tired.

-- The baby is covered by a blanket or quilt.

-- The baby sleeps with more than one bed-sharer.

-- The baby is younger than 11 to 14 weeks of age.

What are other causes of sleep-related causes of infant death?

Other sleep-related causes of infant death are those related to how or where a baby slept. These can include accidental causes such as:

Creating A Safe Sleeping Space

While healthcare experts and pediatricians don’t know the exact causes of SIDS, research shows that parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths by creating a safe sleeping space for babies. Here are some tips:

*“Back” to sleep: place your baby on their back to sleep, rather than on their stomach or side throughout the first year of their life. Keep the crib as bare as possible: Use a firm mattress and avoid placing your baby on thick, fluffy padding, such as lambskin or a thick quilt. Don’t leave pillows, fluffy toys or stuffed animals in the crib. These can interfere with your baby’s breathing if baby’s face presses into them.

*Don’t overheat the baby. To keep your baby warm use a sleep sack or other sleep clothing that doesn’t require more blankets. Never cover your baby’s head.

*Have your baby sleep in your room. Ideally, babies should sleep in the same room with you (but alone in a crib, bassinet or other piece designed for infant sleep, for at least the first six months to a year.

*Adult beds are not safe for your baby! A baby can become trapped and suffocate between the headboard slats, the space between the mattress and bed frame, or between the mat tress and a wall.

*Breast-feed your baby if possible. Breastfeeding for at least the first six months of your baby’s life will lower the risk of SIDS.

*Don’t use baby monitors and other com mercial devices that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS. Due to ineffectiveness and safety issues, the American Academy of Pediatrics warns against using these devices.

*Offer your baby a pacifier. Sucking on a pacifier without a strap or string at naptime and bedtime might reduce the risk of SIDS. Note – if you’re breast-feeding, wait until your baby is 3-4 weeks old and you’ve settled into a nursing routine before offering a pacifier.

*Immunize your baby! Some research indi cates that immunizations can help prevent SIDS. There is NO evidence that routine immunizations increase the risk of SIDS.

You can help make other parents and caregivers in the community aware of #SID SAwarenessMonth, and how to reduce SIDS in our community! After placing your baby on their back in a safety-approved sleep area, free of blankets, quilts, stuffed toys or other potentially hazardous items, take a snap of the baby sleeping soundly and post it on social media with the hashtag #SafeSleepSnap. The more we all help educate our community, the better we protect the health of our youngest!

In observance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we at Dos Mundos present facts and advice on the following related topics to help you gain a greater understanding of breast cancer:

*Overview: Breast cancer occurs when a malignant tumor originates in cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is defined by the medical profession as a group of cells that grow in disorderly, independent ways and

*Risk factors: As the U.S. Centers for Dis ease Control and Prevention (CDC) states on its website, breast cancer is most common among women 50 and older. As the CDC and other sources have stated, other risk factors include a family history of breast cancer; a first pregnancy after age 30 or not having children; menstruation that begins before age 12 or menopause that takes places after age 55; and poor health-related habits – namely, obesity, smoking, lack of physical inactivity, high fat intake and heavy alcohol consumption.

*Identifying the symptoms: Usually, breast cancer is discovered during screenings. Other times, however, there might be noticeable symptoms. They include a lump in the breast or armpit, changes in breast shape, nipple retraction and eczema, nipple secretion and changes in the breast skin.

*Early detection: Current knowledge about the causes of breast cancer is insufficient; thus, early detection remains the most important step in fighting this disease. When breast cancer is detected early, the chances of recov ery are high. That’s why regular breast cancer screenings are vital for all women over 40.

Unos piensan que esas similitudes son puras casualidades, mientras otros las ven como una advertencia más del planeta tierra, furioso por tanto maltrato y cansado de pedir misericordia. Algo que la ciencia respalda, pues tantos desastres naturales tienen que ver con el calentamiento global.

Y se sabe que estamos metidos en tremendo problema con la naturaleza, sin embargo, muchos no se han creído la urgencia que tiene dejar de cometer millones de acciones que arruinan al planeta diariamente. Si reconoces que eres uno de ellos, comienza por cambios tan sencillos como los siguientes:

No arrojes aceite por el fregadero: Por cada litro de aceite que baja por la tubería, estás haciendo que mil litros de agua se contaminen. El aceite vertido también afecta los drenajes,

provocando inundaciones. Lo ideal sería reciclarlo o echarlo en un recipiente con tapa y ponerlo en la basura.

Desenchufa lo que no usas: Un cargador que esté enchufado gasta energía aún cuando no esté conectado al celular. Desenchufa cualquier aparato eléctrico que no uses. Y si no te acuerdas de apagar las luces cuando sales de una habitación, coloca un sensor que haga apagar la luz cuando no detecte personas en el lugar. Desenchufando y apagando bombillos no sólo ayudarás al planeta, sino que ahorrarás dinero. Como todo en la vida, la única manera de lograr grandes cambios es comenzar por pequeñas acciones. Yo llevo años tomando medidas pro ambiente, sin embargo “la casualidad” o “la alerta” que vimos entre México y Puerto Rico, me hizo reflexionar y buscar otras maneras para añadir más “granitos de arena” en la lucha más grande que tenemoscomo humanidad. ¡Únete ya a curar nuestro planeta!

On Sunday (Oct. 2), Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office said more than 1,600 people have been rescued from Hurricane Ian’s path. Two research scientists from South America have been identified as the victims who were found murdered Saturday (Oct. 1) amid the remnants of an apartment fire in Kansas City, Missouri.

Around 5 a.m. on Oct. 1, police and fire crews responded to a fire call in the 4100 block of Oak Street. While crews battled the blaze, they located two people deceased inside the apartment.

On Monday (Oct. 3), police identified the victims as Camila Behrensen, 24, and Pablo Guzmán Palma, 25.

Behrensen was from Buenos Aires, Argen tina, and Guzmán Palma was from Santiago, Chile. They were both predoctoral research ers with the Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

“We are devastated by the tragic deaths of two of our predoctoral researchers. These researchers were members of our 2020 class and vibrant members of our Stowers Institute community. Our deepest sympathies are with their families at this difficult time,” a state ment from the Stowers Institute and Gradu ate School said, as reported by KHSB-41.

Homicide and bomb and arson detectives were called to the Oct. 1 scene. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 816-474-8477.

The rematch was played following consider ations of moving it from Tampa to Minneapolis because of concerns regarding Hurricane Ian. And as Kansas City coach Andy Reid pointed out, and multiple media outlets reported, the threat of damage posed by the hurricane prompted the Buccaneers to practice in Miami.

“For Todd (Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles) to get his guys ready to go … when they’re driving back and forth is really something.

… He’s done a heck of a job with this group here,” Reid told reporters during his postgame press conference, televised on NBC affiliate KSHB-TV (Channel 41). “I think the Bucs are very lucky to have him.”

Listo el repechaje del Apertura 2022

Este fin de semana inicia el repechaje del Apertura 2022 de la Liga MX.

Tigres enfrentará a Necaxa, Toluca enfrentará a Juárez, Cruz Azul hará lo mismo con León, y sin duda, el partido de la jornada será en donde Puebla enfrente a las Chivas de Guadalajara.

De estos cuatro partidos saldrán los rivales de los cuatro equipos que ya esperan en los cuartos de final, como son el América, quien quedó de líder en la tabla general, Monterrey, Santos y Pachuca.

Tigres de Miguel Herrera será el que abra la jornada de repechajes el sábado 8 de octubre, cuando reciba a los rayos de Jaime Lozano. Acto seguido lo harán Cruz Azul y León en el estadio Azteca.

Informe encuentra abusos contra jugadoras de fútbol en Estados Unidos

Un informe encargado por la Federación de fútbol estadounidense, encontró que la Liga Femenina de Fútbol Profesional ha estado abusando sistemáticamente de las jugadoras en todas las categorías.

La investigación del bufete de abogados King &Spalding, encontró que ha habido abuso verbal y emocional; además de comportamientos sexuales inapropiados que excedían los límites de un entrenamiento y que han sido habituales desde las categorías inferiores hasta la superiores.

En la investigación de 36 páginas, se acusa de que tanto la Liga como la Federación, “fracasaron sistemáticamente a la hora de responder a las denuncias” y no instauraron medidas para prevenirlas.

Como consecuencia, muchos entrenadoras cambiaron de club en club sin que nadie los frenara.

El informe recomendó instaurar mayor transparencia y rendición de cuentas, un reglamento claro donde se condene la conducta inapropiada, además de facilitar a las jugadoras a que puedan denunciar estos hechos sin temor a represalias.

Gran cierre de temporada del Sporting

El Sporting de Kansas City está teniendo un cierre de temporada espectacular.

A pesar de ya estar eliminados de cualquier opción de postemporada, Kansas City ha sumado su quinta victoria en siete partidos, además que los otros dos fueron empates.

Y no sólo eso, está dejando sin opciones de postemporada a equipos que eran candidatos al título, como el Seattle Sounders.
