hen it comes to diabetes, the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a W pound of cure” is true.

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and type 2. Type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes, can occur at any age, but it’s more common among children and teens, as multiple sources have stated. With this type of diabetes, the body fails to produce insulin or enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is non-insulin dependent and tends to be more common among people ages 35 and older, particularly those who are overweight and don’t exercise, according to health care experts. The American Diabetes Association states that type 2 diabetes is more common among African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and Asian Americans.

recover from the financial hit her store, Clothz Minded, had taken during the COVID pandemic when she received the news: She was diagnosed with two types of breast cancer. A year later, as Breast Cancer Awareness Month winds down, Ortega’s still undergoing treatment for it, but it’s less debilitating. “They decided I needed another year of treatment,” she said. “But it’s more of a preventative treatment and to kill any cells that might still linger.” Her treatment was so debilitating that Ortega recounts she couldn’t get out of bed throughout her chemo. Luckily, she said, she had some friends and even customers that volunteered to help her out with Clothz Minded, which has limited hours, but remains open for business at 4115 Pennsylvania Ave. in Kansas City, Missouri. Opened in 2010, Clothz Minded is “a sustainable collection boutique” for women, its social media pages state. Even though it has survived a pandemic and her fight with cancer, finances have been tough, Ortega said, especially because she hasn’t been able to work when doing chemo. “There are people who can work through chemotherapy, but there are others who cannot. And I was one of those people,” she said. “I was in bed throughout the entire thing.” A friend set up a GoFundMe page to help cover her medical bills. That has helped Ortega immensely, she said. Ortega doesn’t shy away from sharing her fight with breast cancer. And she has recently used Clothz Minded to raise awareness about breast cancer. On Sunday (Oct. 23), her store hosted the event Squeeze, Sip and Shop with the Diagnostic Imaging Mammogram Bus to offer mammograms. Ortega was happy with the result, as six women came to get theirs done. “My goal was to have at least one woman get her mammogram, so we surpassed that,” she said. At her store, Ortega is selling a T-shirt she designed to support breast cancer. “I’m gonna use a portion of the proceeds to start and fund a nonprofit that I want to start that would help other single moms in the Kansas City area who have breast cancer,” she said. After her cancer diagnosis, Ortega willingly shares what she has experienced. “From the beginning, I adopted the ideology of why this is happening for me instead of to me, and part of the reason is so I can be an advocate for women that think it can’t happen to them and continue to push that narrative of get in and get your mammogram or even make sure you’re committed to self breast exams every month,” she said.

Even though diabetes can be managed with the right medication, it’s crucial to avoid developing it. To lower your risk of developing diabetes, use the following tips: *Increase physical activity: Walk or exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Your exercise can range from low-impact activities like walking to high-impact aerobic exercise. *Eat healthy: Include the proper amount of nutrients in your diet, including fiber and whole grains. Healthy eating and getting proper nutrients will boost your immune system. *Maintain a healthy weight: If you’re overweight, start losing some pounds. *Get regular check-ups: Regular checkups will help you understand your health conditions and can help prevent future health problems like diabetes. So visit your doctor every year. The number of people with diabetes increases every year. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 37.7 million people have it and an estimated 8.5 million other people have it but haven’t been undiagnosed. By taking preventative measures like the ones mentioned above, however, you can avoid being among those statistics. Those ounces of prevention will provide pounds of cure.

n a Detroit area courtroom on Oct. 24, a 16-year-old Oxford High School stuI dent pleaded guilty to 24 counts of murder,

attempted murder, terrorism and weapons violations. Last November, he took a gun to school and fatally shot four classmates and injured seven. He was 15. As he was confessing to his crimes, students and teachers in another school 560 miles away were under attack. A heavily armed 19-year-old recent graduate broke into his former St. Louis area high school. He murdered Jean Kuczka, 61, a teacher planning for retirement and Alexandria Bell, an “always-smiling” sophomore planning her sweet 16. Seven others were wounded by gunfire or injured after jumping out a third-floor window to escape.

The shooter died later at a hospital after a gun battle with police. His life has ended, but the pain he inflicted on everyone at Central Visual & Performing Arts School and their loved ones on Oct. 24 endures. The horrific images and terror will forever haunt them. There have been at least 53 school shootings at K-12 schools so far this year, CNN reported Oct. 30. These tragically preventable school shootings perpetually beg the same critical questions. Those include examining the shooter’s home life and his parents’ level of involvement and engagement in his life. Did they recognize his emotional needs? Were they aware of his troubled condition and/or behavior and ignore or overlook it? Would the incidence of school shootings drop if parents were held accountable? The idea is being tested. Prosecutors in the Detroit area school shootings have charged the shooter’s parents with involuntary manslaughter. They ignored “multiple warning signs” that their son was “spiraling and planning violence,” and they “provided him with the opportunity to carry out that violence by buying him a gun.” They made it readily accessible to him and concealed his access to it from school officials who’d warned the teen’s parents that he was having violent fantasies. The facts of this case are “so egregious” that they require prosecution, said prosecutors. “Holding parents criminally responsible for failing to secure guns in their homes might encourage them to be more responsible,” wrote University of Alabama Law School professor and former U.S. attorney Joyce Vance in The New York Times Feb. 8, 2022. Will the prosecution of the school shooter’s parents provide deterrence? Will it be a wake-up call for parents to pay closer attention to their kids; spend quality time with them and encourage dialogue; set healthy boundaries and limits; encourage them; know what’s going on in their lives, who their friends are and activities they’re participating in; be consistent with discipline; provide a good role model; remind kids that their love is unconditional; and finally, know their limits and when to seek professional help with a child’s emotional or behavior problems. If parents take this prosecution to heart and act on it, kids in schools everywhere may be safer.

Juntos also creates research programs that seek the Latino community’s participation. An example is the latest research on kidney research after a transplant. One of the center’s main objectives is to provide access to information about health to Latinos in their own language. For Hildreth, that work goes beyond translating material into Spanish. It’s about engaging with the community. “We go where they are,” she said. Juntos puts up booths at Hispanic meat stores and “tienditas,” participates in Hispanic-focused events and is active in the social media channels the community uses. “We did our research and asked the community where they get their news and the results said social media and WhatsApp,” Hildreth said. “So we are active on Facebook and WhatsApp.” The center also has a podcast, “Juntos Radio,” which features conversations with medical professional or Hispanic leaders about health-related issues. The episodes are 30 minutes long and are streamed live every other week through Facebook and YouTube. “For us, it’s important to develop an integral and sustainable program inside the University of Kansas Medical Center so that the Latino community can have access to this information,” Hildreth said.

The updated COVID booster shots provide additional protection against Omicron variants of the virus that causes COVID. These Omicron variants now account for almost all recent COVID cases in Kansas, and healthcare experts predict they will continue to circulate this fall and winter. Flu shots are highly recommended for anyone age 6 months and older. The updated COVID booster shots are now available for anyone ages 5 and over. Both flu shots and the updated COVID boosters are available at the UGPHD at 619 Ann Avenue. Call (913) 573-8815 to make an appointment.

ccording to a study published in the A CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, the U.S. cancer mortality rate dropped 43%

over three decades, as CNN reported Oct. 7 and various online sources confirmed. “In total, the death rate dropped by 43% during 1989-2020, translating to 460,000 fewer breast cancer deaths during that time,” the

study states. “The death rate declined similarly for women of all racial/ethnic groups except American Indians/Alaska Natives, among whom the rates were stable.” Although researchers found that the mortality rate had dropped, the incidence of breast cancer had risen since 2004 by .5% per year. The study claims that 30% of breast cancer cases are attributed to modifiable risks, such as excess body weight, physical inactivity and alcohol intake. It also advises that cancerrelated death can be preventable through mammography screenings. Study statistics indicate that 287,850 breast cancer cases will be detected in 2022 and that 43,250 women will die from the disease. “Incidence rates of breast cancer continue to increase slowly in the United States, largely driven by the occurrence of localized and HR-positive disease,” the study states. “This trend reflects in part an increased prevalence of excess body weight and declines in the fertility rate. Nevertheless, breast cancer mortality continues to decline, albeit at a slower pace than during the 1990s and 2000s.” To reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, health experts advise women to limit their alcohol intake, maintain a healthy weight, eat healthy foods, exercise at least 150 minutes a week, limit postmenopausal hormone therapy and get regular checkups.
