On Nov. 17, Kansas City will light up in purple.

In honor of World Pancreatic Cancer Day, around 20 iconic structures in the Kansas City area will be illuminated in purple to help raise awareness about the disease. The structures will include Union Station, the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, the Wornall Bridge and the Giralda Tower.

This is the third year the Edgerton.Life Pancreatic Cancer Foundation has produced this event, also known as the Light KC Purple Project. Jody Edgerton, a foundation board member, said the event has become an impor tant tool for spreading information about the lethality of pancreatic cancer.

Veterans Day has its roots in the Armistice Day celebration, established in 1919 by President Wilson to celebrate World War I veterans. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor all war veterans.

Ongoing hostili ties in Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Libya, South Sudan and Syria have displaced at least 51 million women, children and men. North Korea continues to test nuclear weapons and fire ballistic missiles, escalating tensions with the rest of the world and defying international demands to stop.

The reality is, as U.S. President Frank lin Roosevelt acknowledged in his “Day of Infamy” speech to Congress on Dec. 8, 1941, “hostilities exist.” The world can be a scary place, but peace isn’t the absence of conflict; it’s the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means, reasoned President Ronald Reagan. What better way to honor veterans than to strive for peace tomorrow, Veterans Day, and always.

Habría que recordar un poco el pasado. Como muchos otros mexicanos, crecí en un México autoritario, represivo y con censura donde los presidentes se escogían a dedazo. Y no podemos volver a esa etapa.

Al país le costó mucho trabajo construir una verdadera democracia representativa. Hasta el año 2000 ganó, por primera vez en nuestra historia moderna, un partido de la alternancia. Así que la mexicana es una democracia con instituciones jóvenes que sin duda se pueden mejorar. Pero eso no va a ocurrir con la militarización actual del país ni quitándole autonomía y presupuesto al ente que organiza las votaciones.

Durante siete décadas, el Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) no tuvo el contrapeso de un instituto electoral independiente. En ese tiempo, vivíamos en un país de las fake news: se organizaban elecciones, se contaban los votos y siempre —¡siempre!— ganaba el candidato del PRI. ¿Qué raro, verdad?

Eso es lo que debemos evitar ahora. No podemos volver a esa etapa.

Por 16 años, AMLO ha insistido en su idea de un fraude. Quizás eso explique sus frecuentes ataques al INE. (El Instituto Federal Electoral fue fundado en 1990 y en 2014 se volvió nacional y desde entonces se llama Instituto Nacional Electoral). Poco después de la votación en 2006, entrevisté a López Obrador. “Podemos hablar de dos momentos”, me dijo de su denuncia de fraude. El primero fue “todo lo que significó la falta de equidad antes de la elección: el manejo inequitativo en espacios de radio y televisión, el uso del dinero, el uso ilegal de las instituciones” y, agregó, “la intervención del presidente”. La segunda parte del fraude, dijo AMLO entonces, “está en la falsificación de actas”. El presidente al que se refería López Obrador es Vicente Fox, quien gobernó de 2000 a 2006. Y él no está de acuerdo.

de 2006 es la que legitimó el triunfo de López Obrador en 2018. Y que no es correcto ni congruente aceptar un resultado y rechazar otro. López Obrador “es un tipo que juega sucio, que juega chueco y que hace lo que se le hincha en cada circunstancia”, concluyó Fox.

Parece imposible convencer a Fox de que AMLO ganó en 2006. Y parece imposible convencer de AMLO de que perdió en 2006.

Por eso es tan importante que un árbitro —independiente, imparcial, respetado, respetable, profesional, justo, competente, creíble— organice las elecciones en México y cuente los votos. Y por eso, también, les cuento este viejo conflicto sobre las elecciones de 2006. No importa a qué político le creas o por quién votes, no podemos dejar que sean los propios partidos políticos o el poder ejecutivo en funciones y sus funcionarios sean quienes organicen y decidan a los ganadores de una elección. Ese sería el fin de la corta experiencia democrática en México.

De lo que se trata es reforzar al árbitro electoral, no debilitarlo. De un buen arbitro, fuerte y justo, depende la democracia mexicana. Estados Unidos, dicho sea de paso, podría evitarse

El temor, por supuesto, es que AMLO y su partido, Morena, quieran modificar el sistema electoral para hacerlo más vulnerable y, según algunos críticos, garantizar así su permanencia en el poder. Eso sería un gran retroceso.

Aunque se enoje el presidente. Es por México y su futuro.

There have been an elevated number of cases of influenza, rhino viruses, animal viruses and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the United States, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated during a recent teleconference.

“We are tracking trends and the number of cases of respiratory viruses, the number of emergency department visits, the number of inpatient admissions and the number of intensive care unit admissions,” Dawn O’Connell, assistant secretary for prepared ness and response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, told viewers.

“This allows us to anticipate surges, peaks and valleys, and hospital bed capacity. We are also closely monitoring the supply chain for any potential shortages. All of this helps us to identify and work closely with those health systems that are (experiencing) or will experience stress and strain as a result of RSV, flu and COVID.”

During the teleconference, the CDC stressed the importance of getting flu and COVID vaccinations. In addition to the vaccines, the agency stressed it would be necessary to practice preventative measures, such as covering coughs and sneezes, staying away from people who are sick, and frequent hand-washing and using hand sanitizer.

The CDC stated there would be some chal lenges staying healthy during the wintertime. It also reminded people that RSV and the flu are not new.

To relieve symptoms from the viruses, people are advised to manage their fevers and pains by taking medicine, drinking fluids and talking to a health care provider.

KCPS moves forward with new academic plan KCPS avanza con nuevo plan académico

El sistema de las Escuelas Públicas de Kansas City (KCPS) está trabajando en un nuevo plan académico: Blueprint 2030. Blueprint 2030 es un “esfuerzo de planificación y participación comunitaria de un año de duración que definirá cómo KCPS debe servir a los estudiantes en el futuro y los cambios a nivel de sistema que debemos realizar para llegar allí”, según el sitio web de KCPS. Blueprint 2030 is a “year-long planning and community engagement effort that will define how KCPS should serve students in the future and the system-level changes we need to take to get there,” according to the KCPS website. Hope Soriano-McCrary, KCPS chief communications and marketing officer, recently sat down with Dos Mundos to discuss what students and school system patrons should know about the plan.

“It’s the academic plan for increased academic vision,” Soriano-McCrary said.

“What we are hoping (for) is an academic vision and academic programming for our students that provides them with an excellent academic experience. We want our students to be ready for a career or college, if that’s

A pesar de que se han llevado a cabo los chats comunitarios programados, los padres aún pueden compartir sus comentarios a través del sitio web de KCPS.

Soriano-McCrary said KCPS is at the end of Phase 4, which was about sharing recommendations given by MGT Consulting Group and from listening to the community.

“We’ve been having community meetings all around town to share what those recom mendations were that were brought to us and we just wanted to get some feedback from the community about those recommenda tions, and those recommendations came with some school closures and some school consolidations around town,” she said.

MGT Consulting Group has recom mended the closure and consolidation of 10 schools: two high schools and eight elementary schools. But Soriano-McCrary emphasizes that those are only recommen dations and nothing is set.

“We want parents to give us their feedback and their opinion, and we want parents to know that they can share their voice,” she said.

Besides school closures and consolida tions, other recommendations include introducing STEAM courses (science, tech nology, engineering, art, math) and world languages; programming that better reflects students’ cultures, provides hands-on learn ing and offers real-world experiences; and changes to facilities and classrooms.

Even though the scheduled community chats have taken place, parents can still share their feedback through the KCPS website.

“We want to make decisions in col laboration with the community,” SorianoMcCrary said. “We don’t want to do any thing to the community; we want to do this with the community.”

Museum offers special days for children with autism Museo ofrece días especiales para niños con autismo

Las familias con niños diagnosticados con un trastorno del espectro autista (TEA) que busquen algo que hacer durante Labor Day podrían considerar visitar el Museo del Condado de Johnson (Kansas).

Desde las 9 de la mañana hasta el mediodía del Labor Day, el museo ofrecerá uno de sus eventos Sensory Friendly Mondays (Lunes Adecuados Sensorialmente). Estos eventos, que se celebran el primer lunes de cada mes, están “diseñados específicamente para niños con diferencias de procesamiento sensorial», según indica el museo en su página web.

Se anima a los visitantes a que se inscriban con antelación en los Sensory Mondays, según el museo.

El museo se encuentra en el 8788 de la avenida Metcalf, en Overland Park.

El National Institute of Mental Health define el TEA como “un trastorno neurológico y del desarrollo que afecta a la forma en que las personas interactúan con los demás, se comunican, aprenden y se comportan”. Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades de EE.UU. informan que aproximadamente 1 de cada 44 niños estadounidenses es diagnosticado con TEA, siendo los niños cuatro veces más propensos que las niñas a recibir el diagnóstico. Como informó en 2019 la emisora de radio pública de Florida WLRN-FM, los miembros de grupos minoritarios tienden a ser diagnosticados con TEA más tarde y con menos frecuencia que los blancos.

Los profesionales de la salud afirman que no hay una detección médica para el TEA. Más bien, es diagnosticado por los profesionales de la salud mental a través de la observación del comportamiento, y hablando con el cliente, los miembros de la familia y/o los educadores.

Los primeros síntomas del TEA pueden ser evidentes en la infancia, según healthychildren. org. Sin embargo, “como suelen sentarse, gatear y caminar a tiempo, las diferencias menos evidentes en el desarrollo de los gestos corporales, el juego de simulación y el lenguaje social suelen pasar desapercibidas”, afirma el sitio web.

Como han informado múltiples fuentes, aún no se han determinado las causas específicas del TEA. From 9 a.m. to noon on Labor Day, the museum will offer one of its Sensory Friendly Mondays events. Held the first Monday each month, the events are “designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences,” the museum states on its website.

Visitors are encouraged to preregis ter for Sensory Friendly Mondays, the museum states.

The National Institute of Mental Health defines ASD as “a neurologi cal and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 1 in 44 American children is diagnosed with ASD, with boys four times more likely than girls to receive the diag nosis. As Florida-based public radio station WLRN-FM reported in 2019, members of minority groups tend to be diagnosed with ASD later and less often than whites.

Health care professionals state there is no medical detection for ASD. Rather, it is diagnosed by mental health profes sionals through observing behavior, and talking with the client, family members and/or educators.

Early symptoms of ASD might be evident in infancy, according to healthy children.org. However, “because they usually sit, crawl and walk on time, less obvious differences in the develop ment of body gestures, pretend play and social language often go unnoticed,” the website states.

As multiple sources have reported, specific causes of ASD have yet to be determined. Multiple sources also have reported that ASD has no cure, but treatments usually focus on keep ing individuals diagnosed with ASD as functionally independent as possible. Specific goals generally include qual ity of life improvement and developing communication skills.
