Kavanah

‘Kavanah’ is as unique as its name itself; you sense freshness as soon as you step into it. It is more than a cafe but not as formal as a restaurant. The place is owned by three brothers who have expertise knowledge of architecture, fashion and of course food. The ambience has a very European feel, the arch like entrance passage leads you to the in-house Patisseries, you can choose take away or enjoy the fine dining experience which is definitely a must try especially with beautiful wall art indoors or the unbeatable Firanagi pani tress outdoors. Our favorite however is the outdoors because the tree sends out a nice citrus smell post sunset tempting you to lounge around it for hours. Coming to delicacies, we tried out the “Bannofee Pie” which is just incredible. “Tiramisu” on the other hand was something new since coffee flavor in it was replaced by almonds, the “Dark Chocolate and Rum Marquise” and “Philadelphia Cheese Cake” sends you into trance and will definitely force you to order for a repeat. On savory side “Grilled Lamb Croissant” was crispy at its best. Every dish here is well plated, giving you a feel of more than a usual restaurant but also simple and good to its taste. The “Tortilla Wraps with BBQ Chicken Dipped in Seasoned Egg” as well as “The Triple Cheese Stuffed Mushroom” in vegetarian side of menu were incredibly outstanding and definitely our favorites. Don’t forget to try on something from their “special menu” and be ready to be surprised. 373, Rd No 10, Jawahar Colony, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, 096032 07777

Restaurateur at its best

TULIP

ADVERTORIAL

Naveed Baksh, owner of the popular authentic restaurant - 4 seasons in the city, talks to us about his journey with the restaurant and his upcoming big projects like new eating hubs - Noha and The other Side. We had a chat with him to know more! Tell us your journey with 4 seasons? I have had an amazing journey with both, good and bad times and I am blessed to have had such an opportunity to work especially in my city of Hyderabad. Tell us about the history of 4 seasons? We started in 2001, with a small 70 seat restaurant in Tolichowki. I still remember my mother preparing most of the meals at our apartment when we were kids. When I look back, not just me and my family, but my staff and our guests who have been with us for so many years have come a long way and we have a long way to go. I plan to invest in international markets, with the intention of spreading the Hyderabadi cuisine on a larger scale. We have Mumbai, Vizag and Secunderabad in the year 2017.

What makes 4 seasons unique? The variety and the quality of food ingredients we procure both from India and international market is top-notch. We take pride in keeping our dishes as authentic and original as possible. How do you feel about 4 seasons gaining so much popularity and being every Hyderabadi’s favourite? I would not say 4 Seasons is the only place that is Hyderabad’s favourite. I, myself sometimes enjoy eating out at N-Grill, Big Fork and Jonathans Kitchen and there are many more places. It is good to hear and very motivating to know we are Hyderabad’s favourite. At the end of the day, it is Hyderabad, a very foodie city. You offer good food and service, you are a favourite. Talk about how 4 seasons has emerged as a brand? 4 Seasons has known to be a very upper midscale and mid-scale brand. We plan to position ourselves in that area. We strive not just to dwell and celebrate our accomplishments, but improve on a daily basis in terms of food quality,

Name some of best dishes from the menu? I would say our favourites are Khabsa, Laham, Mezzeh platter, paya or Hyderabad shorba and of course, the star of our menu- Biryani. Off lately, for Noha and The Other Side we are concentrating more on the lost Hyderabadi recipes. These jewels have been sleeping for years, but at our new location, Noha and The Other Side we are reviving these dishes.

I'M TRAVELLING THE WORLD through its flavours and its aromas, so you can taste it,

contact@padvertising.in

What are your upcoming plans for 4 seasons? I plan to change not the market itself but the perception of the company. I plan to position it in such a way that it caters to all markets of audiences and clients. Not just for the Hyderabad market, but also for Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune. An efficient market plan is still underway and should be started once Noha and The Other Side at Jubilee Hills open.

service, and hygiene standards while maintaining our consistency. We at 4 Seasons also believe that at the end of the day, our guests are our judges and they are the ones who position us as a brand.

with my girl gang, long drives, movies, weekend getaways with my family and doing something new all the time. What tickles your taste buds the most? I am a big foodie. I love to experiment with my food. My Favourite cuisines include Italian, Mexican and Lebanese. But Chocolate, Cheese and Coffee make me the happiest. What is the craziest thing you have done by far? I almost always end up doing crazy things because I follow my heart. My most favourite crazy thing was deciding to switch to a hard-hitting full time design course right after completing my Bachelors in business management. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I am very excited about displaying my collection at a new retail store opening up at St. Francis College shortly. Five years down the line, I see myself as a bigger and better version of what I am now.

Shone Nivedita Chakravarti

Her ability to stand by her family and loved ones, mind full of creativity and not to forget unapologetic humour is what makes her who she is. She is a person who is keen on keeping her word and works very hard to achieve her goals with complete perfection. How does a normal day in your life sound like? I have been developing, writing and producing animated content for children’s short movies and episodic television shows for the past four years. I love my job as it allows me to express my creativity, travel extensively to different countries and to work with extremely talented artists. What is your passion? I am extremely passionate about writing. I often review books, movies and theatrical musicals. I love to document all my travels to exotic locations with an eye for detail. What is your quirk factor: Quirk should have been my middle name on all my legal documents and on my passport! My family and friends all often deeply amused and entertained by my flair for churning out hilarious Dubsmashes, (sometimes with my dog too) and have dubbed me as the selfie and pout queen, given the barrage of pictures that I often post with such a varying bunch of funny expressions, that I would put Charlie Chaplin to shame!

Your idea of having fun: Being intensely moody, my idea of fun could vary from reading a book locked up alone in my room, sipping on some yummy hot chocolate with my phone on airplane mode, to going out with my closest friends for a crazy night out! What tickles your taste buds the most? Being half Bengali, half UP Kayasth and full Hyderabadi, all my life’s plans, conversations and motivations revolve around... food! I love Chinese and Hyderabadi food more than Kanye loves Kim. What is the craziest thing you have done by far? (Laughs) the list is probably longer than the Eiffel Tower, but yes... One of the craziest things I’ve done was singing our national anthem in the centre of Oxford Street, London at 12am; in my cotton night suit while it was 4 degrees outside, completely sober! Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Five years from now I would like to see myself working as a successful, independent business woman in the field of entertainment/ publishing, the author of a bestselling novel, happily married, and still enjoying every minute of my life to the fullest! How has your journey been by far? I am truly blessed to be surrounded by extremely loving and supportive parents and friends owing to whom my journey has been one with loads of encouragement, happiness, support and very few regrets.

Farhad Shahnawaz,

Model/Actor He is an independent guy who lives life on daily basis and is very spontaneous about every decision he makes. He strongly believes he is where he is today because of his focused mind and knowing that he always wanted to be a part of fashion and film world. How does a normal day in your life sound like? Well, gymming is my life, no matter what I will never miss my gym sessions. which city I am in, gymming is one thing that I will never miss. I am a model by profession and have been part of this industry for over a decade now. Acting and dancing is what keeps me busy these days. Shooting for ads films and fashion shows are what my days are filled of these days. What is your passion? Acting and body building is my life’s biggest passion and goal. I breathe these two things and love what I do in my life. What is your quirk factor: My distinctive sense of style is what I think is my quirk factor. I have a very unique way of style which makes me stand out amongst a crowd and of course my looks which I think have to do with my genes. That’s God given and kind of runs in the family Your idea of having fun: I am a family person, being with my family and friends are what, fun is to me. I love being surrounded by my own set of people. Dinners, lunches, hangout for a cup of coffee and watch movies is what I do most of the time. Not a party animal as such but I do attend the important ones. What tickles your taste buds the most? Maa ka Khana. What is the craziest thing you have done by far? This might sound weird but I was in US in winters a few years back and

it was freezing with snow on the roads. We were shooting for a TV show and my friends suddenly dared me to take off my t-shirt and walk in that freezing temperature... and so I did. Some people thought I am crazy. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I am doing few film projects and honestly feel like I want to work 24/7 at the moment. I see myself doing a lot of film projects in next five years because I only see myself as an actor and nothing else. How has your journey been by far? I have struggled a lot, from dance to modelling to acting. It has been a long journey and not easy at all. I have struggled a lot whether it was for a dance show on television or being in top five at gladrags or bagging film projects. I had no connection with the industry and whatever I did was on my own. I am still finding it difficult to create that place for myself but I am sure one day I will achieve that. AUGUST, 2015 27

Celebrating World Youth Day and a qualitative approach towards anything ends at triggering success. Youngsters tend to pick up stuff very quickly. Who says they can’t create miracles? Teenagers being the future generations always are equipped with profound talent that protrudes out at the right point of time. Not everyone knows how to use it in a proper way. It indeed needs lot of perseverance, diligence and patience to succeed. Here are a few young achievers who made a mark in various fields.

23 year old MBA graduate who started self-learning magic tricks watching David Blake TV shows at the age of 14. He completed his under graduation at Geetanjali Institute of Engineering, Hyderabad in Electronics and Communication. Watching the TV shows, he created 50 tricks of his own with the pack of cards and more than 250 tricks with various other props. He is also a Guinness World record holder, Limca book of records holder and India Book of Records Holder. Let us see what this immense mind-freak magician talks about his journey of magic. “I like to be exciting and interactive on stage but off- stage I am an introvert. I want my space to not be invaded. Apart from magic, I am also a chess champion of my college and a league cricketer. Acting has been a part of me and I like writing blogs. I even played two league matches for Hyderabad Cricket Association”, he adds. His greatest achievement is his record of Highest Throw of a Playing Card that is listed in this year’s Guinness Book of World Records, Limca Book of Records and India Book of records. “I want to further widen my tricks and promote them on an international level. I also am looking forward to start TV shows on magic like David Blake. It gives me immense pleasure that I succeeded in a field that needs lot of observation and skill. Although, I chose a different path I think it arouses the thought in people to try something unusual,” he further adds.

An extensive movie buff and RJ’ing just happened to her. A B commerce Professionals graduate from St.Francis and Masters from Chennai in Communication. She was not ready for a 9 - 6 job and had been looking out for options. Suddenly Radio Jockeying made her decide that this was want she wanted. Currently working as a Radio Jockey at Red FM, suffices her prerequisites she considered while looking for work. Vidya talks to us about her journey of being a RJ.

“I love talking, I am a really outgoing person who loves to meet new different people and know about them. I love movies a lot and can watch any movie of any language. Acting was not my field so I started looking out for more options. That is when suddenly RJ’ing happened and I chose it as my career. I have just begun my work. It is yet energizing and rejuvenating for me at the end of the day. The fact is at one point of life I had so much stage fear that I couldn’t even talk in front of four to five people and now, the whole city of Hyderabad listens to me. I do the 2-5 movie show. I collect information about the upcoming movies and already released movie reviews to write my script. It still feels surreal that I have achieved what I wanted to do”, she grins.

Swarna Chaganty

Doodler

She is a Computer Science graduate. She worked for two years but quit achieving her passion. A creative talent infused into her since the age 16. It is then she started creating personalized scrapbooks. But it was very little to start her own venture, rather she took orders from her friends and family. At the age of 19-20 she also created workshops for all ages and learnt a lot from them too in return. Swarna talks about the life of doodling.

“I am always fascinated and inspired to create something creative on my own. I am inspired by everything around me, even the people. Alicia Souza is one illustrator, I get inspired from. I am passionate about expressing things. I love to see a whole lot of generation making art totally different from what everyone usually does. I got some good reviews and appreciation from Alicia Souza. A few young people tried my style of art and the best thing is, they have started their own ventures as well. Scrappiti is all about customized stuff tailormade for the special one. I do doodles on anything my customer desires me to work on. It obviously feels awesome but, it doesn’t stop there. I dream and plan a lot before I sleep and that wakes me up with great enthusiasm the very next morning,” she adds. AUGUST, 2015 39

Let us see what led to Iron threads startup.

“I knew I couldn’t enjoy a 9-5 job. I wanted to rather work 18 hours a day but not for a salary or by someone’s rules. It had to be my vision, my project and my goals so I chartered my business plans. To carve a niche, a unique selling point was needed and Iron Threads banks on this. A lot of my orders have been through word of mouth and my friends have been a stellar role in getting the brand recognized by bolstering the clientele. People don’t walk into my office expecting a student so it is a very positive and motivating prospect. To have a successfully running clothing line by making everything in India, right from nationally produced fabrics to utilizing the talent of Indian designers. My venture provides custom clothing and also solutions to people on issues of sporting techniques. Presently I have investors lined up to invest in my next venture which is a sporting arena in Hyderabad. I would like to begin a company to help start ups with the required resources in the form of financial aid and general business guidance. He has been actively involved with several organizations across the world and is currently the country ambassador for COP in Hyderabad and International Telecommunications Union Young Telecom Innovators. The NGO (R) Evolution Lets Change Now works on mitigating climate change; let us see what Abhay talks about his success story. “The inspiration was fueled by my peers across various organizations that I have been working with. There are always several people behind an organization and they rather choose to be in the background always. So, it is always a collective genesis which motivates everyone to take up individual ownership. My passion is developing and civilizing innovative methodologies using effective technology to mitigate climate change. The best achievement is having people around you who can actually think the way you do and offer much better solutions than you can ever imagine. I wish to lead a promising career in the field of electronics and work on bio electronics which actually will try to mimic the high efficient natural process. Change begins with every individual. No achievement is small or big or rather has nothing much to do with my age as well. I am happy that people around me and others actually have started taking small initiatives through our combined efforts and the future looks promising enough,” he adds.

Copywriter She has completed her MBA from Institute Of Computers and Business Management. A dual degree holder in marketing and HR. Copywriting just happened in her life when she began writing poetry expressing her thoughts. Though for the start, her company had two women it now consists of about 70 copywriters working in her company Pencil 9 in a span of two years. She is also a motivational and influential speaker. Let us see what Trishteeta talks about her work success.

“I am an adventurous person. I love to talk and meet new people. I am also an avid traveler. Honestly, I was never keen on writing, but copy writing just happened. I love writing and all I need is reason to write. I used to write poetry to express my thoughts and feelings for my husband through writing. He encouraged me to start writing and since then, there was no looking back. My husband is my inspiration. Now, it is writing. Next in line is traveling. I started off as one of the many copy writing in the city but now, people recognize as an individual and an entrepreneur too. It feels great when you know that people trust in you and depend on you for strength, motivation and inspiration. Pencil 9 was found on February 28th, two years ago with just two women. Today, I have a team of 68 copy writers from across the globe. I dream to grow my team hundred times the size it is now. “After all this time?” “Always,” said Snape Of course Snape had the freedom to continue to love Lily regardless of every impediment, inclusive of protecting her child from a filthy, sordid (and nose `less) monster all his life! Under the vast heading of ‘Freedom’ comes what not: partying all night, preference of same-sex marriage (hail America!), draining parents’ wealth or even the 15th of August. Akin to our savoured Biryani, different tastes of perspective remain. Let’s throw some light on some Hyderabadis’ perspective of freedom.

The mother and daughter share kindred perspectives about the concept of freedom. Aditi, who is pursing BDS, “craves freedom every minute of every day in her life,” from the time her course began. She exclaims, “These days, since exams have been going on, all I dream for with open eyes, is the freedom of sleep.” However, she further earnestly implies, “Freedom is an essential element of living a real and independent life.” Her mother, Rashmi Raj, corroborates her statement, “Freedom is the key to every closed door.” But essentially, Rashmi, like any other mother or wife, fantasizes days of liberty in terms of freedom from worries and anxiety that she feels for her children and husband: their safety, their health, their life, even their handkerchiefs. Mama’s gonna keep you right here under her wing. She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing.

These three individuals have been friends for more than 9 years now, are best of friends with one another, or like they liked to be termed- ‘brothers’. Their purview and range of perspective, however, varies. Adnan puts it as bluntly as any other young adult: “Freedom, to me, means doing something which I feel is right and not being questioned or looked down upon for it.” On the other hand, Samad deduces, “I will feel free when I will be able to express my feelings without having to worry about people. Freedom of expression, freedom of choice are both very important.” Fazal, in an uncustomary manner, reckons, “I will only be accorded with freedom when parents mind their own business!” But he then laughed. Calm, you. ‘Cause the heart wants what it wants.

Aniqua sees freedom in days when she’s “at least partly free from (her) mommy responsibilities.” While Ali Bilgrami perceives freedom “in long holidays, super long drives and days when (he) can just chill at Taj Krishna with his friends and acquaintances.” They both also share agreement-nods when asked if freedom, to them, also means days when their three kids are gone over to their “granny’s place.” Because all you need is somebody to lean on! Mr. Green, like Rafi likes to call himself, believes ‘freedom’ is a funny construct. He explains, “Freedom is a return to the state of an enquiring child, around 8-9 years of age, I guess. But it will never happen. No matter our fight, our past shapes us and pushes us further from independence. Hence, freedom is a funny construct, a myth.” He also claims, “There are confines in our minds, and freedom is achieved when we defeat our doubting selves.” Let it go! Let it go! Don’t hold it back anymore!

SALUTING

OUR

HEROES

Sports? So, how do you define it? Do you define it scientifically as the physical exertion of body by performing various tasks, activities out of competition or a desire? Just like a day for lovers – Valentine’s day, A day for Mathematicians –Pi Day and so many much remembered and often celebrated days. How many of us know there is a day which holds much significance to such ‘sporty’ people, too? Yes, it is known as National Sports Day. It’s a day celebrated in memory of a legand who was born that day, Major Dhyan Chand Singh, who won many hearts in our country. He was one of the best hockey players, India has ever had and he continues to be remembered on the 29th August, every year by the celebration of National Sports Day. While other cities keep boasting about their sports personalities who have won games and hearts for them, we Hyderabadis have no less reasons to celebrate the victory of our very own fellow sportspersons too; so we pay tribute to such sportspersons who have given us multiple reasons to be proud of them and celebrate their innumerable victories. - By Gehna M

Sania Mirza

TULIP

FEATURE

Born to a sports journalist Imran Mirza and Nasima in Mumbai, she has been brought up in our very own city of Nawabs. Sania has been a great Hyderabadi, in every true sense of word. She studied in Nasr School and graduated from St Mary’s, Hyderabad. But, she was true to her inner self and her determination when she started working towards her dream at the age of six. Ever since 2003 when she first won Arjuna Award by the Indian Government, she hasn’t stopped succeeding. Today, she is ranked as the highest female tennis player with a career ranking of 27 in singles and 18 in doubles. Sania Mirza on 11th July, 2015 became the first female player from the country to win a women’s doubles Grand Slam trophy as she clinched the Wimbledon title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis, in London. Her achievements are innumerable and she still roars high.

Jwala Gutta Not just in the field of Tennis and Cricket, Hyderabad has had a spectacular progress in Badminton too, since years now. If you don’t know about Jwala Gutta, you are definitely living under a rock. One of the left handed Indian Badminton Player, Jwala was born and brought up to a Telugu Father and a Chinese mother. Hailing from a family of freedom fighters, bravery and perseverance runs in her veins, doesn’t it? Her first victory was at a very young age when she won the title of Mini National Badminton Championship for the young ladies under thirteen years old. Recently, she even participated with Ashwini, her fellow player in the 2015 Canada Open Grand Prix and seeded third. They went on to win the title defeating top seeded Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek. The duos were the only pair to win Grand Pix Title and their win was commended!

Mohammad Azharuddin Azhar, as he is popularly known, grew up in Hyderabad and attended All Saints High School, of which fellow cricketers Venkatapathy Raju and Noel David were also part of. He had won a lot of fame in a very less time and was even the captain of the Indian Cricket Team for almost 1990s. In the words of John Woodcock, “It’s no use asking an Englishman to bat like Mohammad Azharuddin. It would be like expecting a greyhound to win the Epsom Derby”. Not only a cricketer but he was very well recognised and appreciated in the field of politics as well. He has been a part of Indian National Congress for years and not only that, he was even elected as a member of Indian Parliament. But, his growing progress started deteriorating after he was accused of a match fixing scandal in 2000 which had a growing impact on his career as soon the Government labelled the accusation as ‘unsustainable’. Playing or stopped playing, blooming or not, isn’t it the genuine fact that these people have surely gotten us to have someone as our mentors and someone to look up to? Not just in the field of sports but they have always given us reasons to be aghast at their mesmerising and very gorgeous personalities? This would be a salute to all those who have given everything of theirs to sports and everything of theirs, to us, most importantly. AUGUST, 2015 45

Saina Nehwal The word – ‘success’ defines her and the popular saying “You can be your own reason to climb stepping stones of success” should have been written for her, agreed? Saina lost many matches in 2006 but that didn’t stop her from working harder and harder. She then started her coaching by S. M. Arif, a Dronacharya Award winner, and then by Pullela Gopichand till 2014 September. She is currently continuing her coaching by U. V Kumar, the former Indian badminton champion. She was the first Indian to win a bronze medal in badminton for Olympics in London back in 2012. She made us proud after she won her maiden women’s singles title at the India Open (badminton)|India Open]] BWF Super Series beating RatchanokIntanon of Thailand. After which she became the World number 1 as in the latest BWF rankings were released on April 2nd. She became the first Indian women’s player to be World No.1 in badminton.

Harsha Bhogle Harsha Bhogle, born to AD Bhogle and Shalini Bhogle, professors for French and psychology. He always had a dream to grow till he cannot grow anymore. He attended Hyderabad Public School and was also made the head boy of his school considering his all-rounder qualities and attributes. He has been working for Star Sports and other channels airing sports and was supposedly also part of ‘Few Good Men’ a commentary team which included some much known eminent personalities named Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sunil Gawaskar and many more. He has been covering IPL since 2009. Not only that, he was one f the anchors for the World Cup held in 2011 and has made a name for himself, ever since he started working on his dreams and fulfilling them. Hasn’t our very own Eaglet actually sored to new heights in the world of cricket, tell me about it..!?!

VVS Laxman Our very own cricketer who has become to be someone many look upto, don’t you think? I mean he was a medical student and was pretty focused to make a name for himself in the field of medicine and look where he is today? Representing India everywhere and anywhere and winning so many hearts. He was the captain of Deccan Chargers before he was replaced by Adam Gilchrist. He is known for his skilful use of his supple wrists, which allows him to flick the ball to various places, but usually through the leg side. This also helps in his catching and he typically fields in the slips or in a bat pad position, He played for a short period of time and soon retired but before that, he was named one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year which is the title he will forever be remembered and loved for by all of the world. 46 AUGUST, 2015

Popularly known as Sindhu, belonging to a sports family born to P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya – both former volleyball players surely has achieved extremely well and has reached her highest potential. She currently at Hyderabad’s Gopichand Badminton Academy. She has been a remarkably successful badminton player too. She is the first ever Indian after Prakash Padukone (who won Bronze in 1983) to win a medal in singles at the World’s Championships. She even witnessed a very grateful moment when she was awarded Padma Shri on 30th March, 2012. The world number 11, Sindhu showed extraordinary skills and fighting spirit to defeat the second ranked Shixian Wang in three gruelling sets, with the match lasting more than an hour at Copenhagen.

Mitali Raj Pullela Gopichand Pullela Gopichan another such a person who has worked and contributed fairly well to the Indian history of sports was brought up in Hyderabad. He is a current badminton player who has won gold and silver at the Indian National Games. Internationally, he represented in three Thomas Cup tournaments. He even won a gold medal in SAARC badminton tournament and defended the crown in the next games held at Colombo in the year, 1997. He runs the Gopichand Badminton Academy which aims at and trains several Indian other very well known badminton players like Saina Nehwal, P.V.Sindhu, Tarun Kona and Srikanth Kidambi.

Parupalli Kashyap You can prepare a list of adjectives for ‘determined’ and you would still fall short of some when it comes to define him. He was prepared to keep running no matter how much he bled at heart or cried in his eyes. Why would I say that? He wanted to focus on his badminton career but in 2004, he was diagnosed with asthama. At first he thought that marked the end of his career in the field of sports but it didn’t quite aggravate him. He put in effort and overcame this obstacle too with a smile on his face. This man created history for himself by reaching the quarter finals of men’s singles at 2012 London Olympics, being the only male player from India to do so. At the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, he won the gold medal in men’s singles. Kashyap was the Icon Player for the Indian Badminton League team, Banga Beats in 2013 edition. He did fulfil his dream too, he saw his name amongst the two legends- Syed Modi and Prakash Padukone after he won the gold medal in men’s single badminton championship.

Born in Rajasthan this talented cricketer lives in Hyderabad. For those who think cricket is a game for men or boys, need a reality check! Isn’t that what Mitali Raj proved to us? She began playing cricket when she was a tiny tot- at the age of 10 and within seven years she formed an impression in so many minds that she was selected for the Indian team. She even had a place in her heart for dancing but when it came to choosing, she chose cricket over dance and she quit dance to pursue her cricket career. At the age of 19, she broke the record of Karen Rolton’s which was formed when he had scored the highest test score of 209, she scored 214 instead against England. During the World Cup, Mitali starred as Number 1 cricketer in the ODI chart among women. She was the second person to achieve 5000 runs in ODI women cricket match. Wasn’t she an inspiration proving that women are no less, in any field whatsoever?

anya works for Red Bull and loves her cat, Lester. Lester is a tabby who was gifted to her by a friend. She racks her head for her favorite memory of him and decides that the best one was when he welcomed her home after she had returned from a long vacation. Calling her kitten full of life, she says that he does the craziest things and loves to climb up the window! Ask her about the best places to buy cats and pat comes the answer, “I personally don’t believe in buying pets, so it’s better if we all adopt.” She observes that Dr. Dog, The Pet Hospital in Trimulgherry is fine and affordable. However just to keep one’s options open she also suggests Good Shepherd Veterinary Clinic in Neredmet. Also, the book on cat behavior by Arden Moore has helped her a lot and a site where she says she always finds answers is www. catbehaviorassociates.com

ebecca’s cat’s name is Skinny. She is a mackerel tabby. Rebecca found her at college and rescued her from some dogs who were on the verge of killing her. Her favourite memory of Skinny would be the day she rescued her and got her home. “I had to keep her with me throughout the day in college, sneaking her into class, putting her in my backpack so that the principal or lecturer wouldn’t catch me. And the best part she cooperated and didn’t meow even once. We bonded instantly and since then we haven’t been separated,” she exclaims. She finds it adorable when her cat comes and rests her head on her shoulder. Also when she comes and sits randomly on her workspace. She usually buys her collars from any regular pet store and customises them. She adds that pet stores online also have great stuff. She doesn’t believe in quality and firmly opines that every animal needs a home whether they are stray or of good quality. She has adopted two dogs and three cats already and says that Fur & Feathers at Banjara Hill has some good quality cats. “The best part about owning a cat is they are so independent and clean by nature. They love playing with almost anything that moves well that includes my feet too!”, she describes. Her favourite book is ‘How to live with a neurotic cat’ by Stephen Baker. Google is another helpful source. She also follows pages on Facebook like ‘Life with Cats’ which is very informative. She adds that the page, “catsofinstagram” on Instagram has really cute pictures of cats and their owners.

She buys most of her pet stuff online and frequents Amazon a lot of times. She also hasn’t found any good boarding places in the city so she makes sure that someone from her family is always around to take care of her kitten in her absence. She loves that she needs to work on getting her cat’s attention and says that’s the best part about owning a cat. She adds that unlike dogs, cats can get quite pricey and don’t show off their love for their owners. “My kitten has a heart of a human, he is very unique that’s what I love about him,” she quips.

n employee of Google, Shalini is a busy woman, but time spent with her cat Voodoo is invaluable to her. She adopted Voodoo, a Dollface Persian, from a family that bred cats just like their own. She was extremely touched at how all the cats were well-bred, vaccinated and taken care of that she now recommends this family to any friend who wants to adopt a cat. She vividly remembers how, when she returned from work one day, she had found Voodoo, a kitten back then, playing with a tiny little monkey that had slipped into her room. “It was an awwww moment for sure,” she adds with a twinkle in her eye. Voodoo waits for her and greets her with all the love and purring when she returns from work. He loves to play fetch and football with beer caps! “A lot of people think that cat’s aren’t capable of reciprocating love or showing emotions, but they are wrong. Cats just don’t like being needy, but they love you all the same,” she maintains. Siraj is somebody she vouches for if one is looking to adopt a kitty. His cats are young ones of home bred cats so they are well behaved for starters. Additionally, they are litter trained so they won’t soil the house at random corners. She recommends the Animal Care Clinic for good vets. Though expensive, they are thorough professionals. They do everything, from microchipping, arranging for pet passports, to physiotherapy for your pets. The best thing about them is that they create an online file for you tracking all of your pet’s details, including breed, past vaccinations, medical history, and any upcoming vaccinations (for which they send you email reminders)! All of this history comes in very handy, if you decide to relocate abroad with your pet. There is also a pet accessories store adjacent to the vet clinic where she buys all her stuff from. She mourns that there aren’t many boarding places for cats in Hyderabad and that there is no presence of a strong pet community so that one can look after pets if you are away. “The best part of owning a cat is that they make for mature pets,” she beams. They understand and sometimes even match their sleeping time to your work time. They also are great pets for apartment dwellers because they occupy very little space. For resources on cats, she suggests the videos on YouTube especially on Discovery.

ravanthi is a quiet girl who absolutely adores her Turkish Van, Dolly. She adopted her when her friend was leaving the country. She says her best memory of Dolly was when she had gone out of town for three days and upon her return, Dolly wouldn’t let go of her side. She was constantly holding on to her with her tiny paws and showered her with extra love. “I will never forget that day,” she muses. She cannot stop gushing about how cute she looks when she plays, especially with bubbles and when she is hungry and asking for food. She also likes to stare into her laptop screen when Sravanthi is working on it. “I am not sure she understands much, but she doesn’t miss an opportunity to gaze at my laptop screen,” she laughs. She suggest Fur N Feathers at Banjara Hills to buy cats and reveals that she got hers from Turkey. She is yet another endorser of the Animal Pet Care Clinic at Banjara Hills. A good place to purchase accessories for Dolly is Pet World in Himayat Nagar. She is sceptical of leaving her cat at a boarding place and prefers not to keep too much information about them either. She loves that her cat is neat and disciplined and it makes her the best out of the dog, guinea pigs and the pigeon that Sravanthi already owns. A fun fact about her cat is that she acted in the commercial of the Telugu movie, “Yevade Subrahmanyam.” “She made me so proud,” she beams. She also explains how a bad day can just turn around and become good if one has a cat. Quiz her about resources for cats, she endorses the website www.cattime. com.

ita is quite an animal lover. Stalk her on Facebook and you will find pictures with at least one animal. Her cat, Mr. Meowgi, chose her as his family. Rescued after a history of abuse, this cute little orange mackarel tabby, was adopted by her friend from the Blue Cross of Hyderabad, but she claims he ‘conveniently’ moved into her house. Recollecting her favorite memory of him, she calls him a clown and says the game of frisky (a stick with a mouse on it), always seems to have happy memories associated with it. “It’s so much fun watching him go all Karate Kid on it,” she quips. She fondly talks about all the cute things he does for her and her family. Right from meowing back when greeted, as if to acknowledge you; to curling up next to her while she’s reading, to getting dead rats and other ‘treats’, to ‘feed’ her, she can’t stop raving about her kitty. “Hundreds of cats are waiting for a home,” she laments. While she’s against selling and buying of cats, she advises that one must check the mother of the kitten that is being adopted. If the mother is well-cared for, the younger one tends to have lesser behavioural problems. She recommends adopting a cat from the shelter or from another home bred cat.

When it comes to vets, she has many to offer, and suggests Olive Pet Clinic’s Dr. Kadambari who is her cat’s vet doctor too. Besides her, she maintains that Animal Care Clinic’s Dr. Lakshmi and team, Happy Pet Clinic’s Dr. Prity, Canfel Pet Clinic’s Dr. Praveen are go-to vets. Most of Mr. Meowgi’s toys are from Nutan, a pet store in Hyderabad which stocks pretty much everything a cat would need. “Websites like dogspot.in and Heads Up for Tails are good too,” she adds. Another Facebook page she recommends for information on cats is Cattitude. “For boarding places in the city, Bhairav Camps at Sainikpuri does have three kennels to cater to cat owners but needs to be reserved much in advance. Alternatively, if you reach out to the shelter, they can put you in touch with volunteers who are willing to pet sit your cat. Some amazing ladies help with this- Padmaja Auntie, Archana Udaykumar and Tulasi Menon,” says Nita. Recounting her experience of being a cat owner, she feels that they are much less of a responsibility and hassle. “They also provide a therapeutic value, but one may face trouble while visiting the vet,” she concludes.

Jyoti Sethi is the quintessential small-town girl-next-door, who has stars in her eyes and feet grounded to her roots. Someone who is willing to work very hard to reach her goals but not at the cost of her dignity, morals and self respect. Jyoti Sethi gives you a lot more about her, right here, right now! How did your career unfold? As the saying goes “life is stranger than fiction”, I had no interest in this industry, have no links and contacts but one fine day, out-of-the-blue came this message on a social media site from a fashion photographer inquiring if I would be keen to pursue a career in modeling/acting. This was the first time I realized I am good-looking enough to consider a career in this industry. Discussions followed meetings, photo-shoots and screen tests to culminate in my selection for a Punjabi movie. This is how I caught the acting bug. What is the best part about being an actress? For me, the best part is being able to reach out and influence the masses. Today, when I support a cause or a charity, more people sit up and take notice than they would if I wasn’t an actor. I like to believe that at least some of them are actually motivated to support such a cause/charity. The other good part is being able to play different roles, in one role; I play a doctor, in another, a village belle. So I get to live many lives instead of just one. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I take life as it comes and don’t make big plans. All I hope and pray for is that I am content, living life on my terms with my head held high, successful in whatever life brings my way, that my smile still reaches my eyes. Tell us about your upcoming projects? I can only say that I have signed two movies recently, one Telugu and another Tamil. I will share more information later, when the timing is right. How has the journey been by far? It has been a steep learning curve. From getting invited to model, to getting selected to play lead actor, to completing the movie’s shooting only to realize it has been shelved to starting from the scratch as a model in Mumbai and grabbing assignments to keep working to landing up in Tollywood. It has been a huge roller coaster ride where life has thrown me a curve ball at almost every turn. If not an actress, what would you choose to be? I have completed M.A. English and had planned to become a teacher/lecturer so I guess that’s what I would have been. How do you deal with stardom? Stardom isn’t something I have experienced yet. Recognition - yes, stardom - definitely not. It helps when my associating with a good cause helps that cause. At retail stores where the sales staff recognizes you and go that extra mile to give you a wonderful shopping experience. I am grateful that I have got this experience but am not awed by it. Every profession has its USPs, instant recognition is this profession’s USP and it is nothing more, nothing less. I am still the same person, I was three years back A lesser known fact about you? It should remain lesser known, it is for you to discover and not for me to disclose. Most memorable moment of you being an actress? For now, it is the pleasure of seeing me on the big screen for the first time. It is a far cry from the young girl growing up in a small town for whom movie stars were semi-gods to being a part of celluloid screen myself. AUGUST, 2015 51

Usaamah Siddique, the stylish man from The Dapper Label, speaks to us on how he is carving a niche in the world of fashion blogging and doing so well. When and how did you start blogging? As a clothing-obsessed individual, I became the go-to resource for my mate’s fashionrelated questions. As a response, I started The Dapper Label to share my opinions on men’s style. I have been doing what I love since a year and a half now. What is your favorite to-go outfit to put on? I love to throw on a cardigan on a t-shirt with jeans and espadrilles for my daily chores. How are you upfront as an individual? I am pretty much an introvert when it comes to being around new people. But, I guess that eventually changes with time! There are a very few male bloggers in India, how do you feel being one among them? How difficult is it to be a male blogger in terms of experimenting? Few or not, I absolutely enjoy being a blogger. I wasn’t aware of the statistics, but it surely is great to do what you love. Experimenting is always a challenge, but I wouldn’t say it’s difficult. Which is your favorite blogger among the ladies? They are all so uniquely amazing, I am yet to pick a favorite. Five clothing essentials every guy should have in his closet? 1) White shirts, 2) A well fitted pair of navy denims, 3) A classic 2 button suit, 4) A metal or leather strap watch and 5) Cardigans. The latest trend you are in love with? I am always in love with the classic style of pairing blue jeans with white shirts. Trends are too fleeting. Among the celebrities, who do you think has the most versatile style? From Bollywood, I absolutely love how Saif Ali Khan dresses. I think he carries everything he wears with such perfection. How has the journey been by far? It’s been super!! I love what I do and nothing makes me happier than my work. What are your further plans with your blog? I plan on starting my line of clothes for the fashion forward which I already am working on! A common fashion faux pas that men usually commit and it highly needs to be avoided? I can sum this up in one word- Crocs. MAKE A STATEMENT WITH BLING There is nothing that brings a smile to our face like a pretty ring, a jangly necklace or some sparkly earrings. Big or small, real or fake, understated or over the top, jewellery lifts the spirits. It also lifts a look. Colourful beads or chandelier earrings could be just the thing to make an ordinary outfit outstanding. While jewellery is a very personal thing- gifts from your significant other, family heirlooms, purchases to mark milestones- it can also be a reflection of your style spirit. Some people can’t go out of the house without loading up necklaces, while for others simple studs will do. Some women prefer an armful of bangles, and some load up on brooches. No matter your preference, bits of baubles are all about adding joy to your look.

Liberent

Sahyujyah Shrinivas always thought entrepreneurship is a way of life and so she wanted to startup. I am a metallurgical engineer by profession and I started working on the idea, by first identifying the target market, to understand if and what women want; everyone was visibly excited about it. Meanwhile I was scouting to build a team, on LinkedIn, meetups, startup groups, angellist, etc. I found my technical director, Sathish Prabhu, Technology analyst and CTS. Now I have two more guys working with us on the technology part, Chinmay Gangakhedkar and Mahesh Kumar, developer and a web designer respectively. LibeRent (Liberation + Rent) is a concept that enables freedom to people (as of now, just women). We can wear anything we want, without worrying about maintenance, going out of trend or the dress not fitting us anymore, majority of us don’t like to repeat clothes and buying something and wearing just twice or thrice is not a good return on investment either. We are talking with both established and upcoming designers to get them on board right now and soon we would be a marketing platform for them to establish a connect between the designers and the consumers. The Response has been pretty great and we are awaiting a lot more customers. We will scale up and go pan-India and also launch, Rent the Look (accessories, handbags) and subscription of clothes for everyday office wear plus weekend wear. We are also launching the rent through us and already got some signups for that. With this, women can rent through us their less used designer wear instead of letting them lie around in their closets. India is particularly different in this aspect than the other markets(U.S, U.K etc) where renting is a phenomenon already. Although we trust our customers, we have taken the precautions we need to. First we have only online payments and the customers should give us their permanent address along with their delivery address, and an ID proof like they do when booking tickets on IRCTC which will be checked during delivery. We are also insuring all the clothes. Website - www.liberent.com 58 AUGUST, 2015

FASHION PeeBee’s by Priyanka Churi

“People always wondered and I was often asked as to why I started a bag label and not something with garments that being my background because I am a fashion designer and didn’t specialise in Accessory designing, I guess that’s because” I always had more ‘BAGS’ than ‘CLOTHES’ in my wardrobe. (Chuckles). More than a fetish which one to carry? And to carry it with what outfit? Came naturally to me. Since I design just ‘bags’ and often notice people are unable to style their accessories with what they wear. Being purely a Garment Designer I had zero knowledge about Accessory Designing and patterns so I started from scratch by watching videos on how to make bags and all I had in mind were ideas... I took it up as a challenge because I knew there is no dearth of fashion designers in the market and my urge to do something completely different pushed me towards making PeeBee’s live. I noticed during my market survey that designers experiment so much with different silhouettes and cuts and wondered ‘why not play with shapes?’ Really unique, quirky shapes never seen before along with being fun, elegant and affordable. Initially I was a little worried as to what the response would be like! But well to my surprise people understand and are always looking for something unique. Something others don’t have! Limited edition! Affordable! The response I always got was ‘ Hey we’ve never seen this before’ and that’s exactly what I wanted. What makes it different from the others is that PeeBee’s never repeating a collection that’s done. Once the collection is over, we start with a new one and don’t look back, that way it remains exclusive and people know we make limited pieces so they are eager and look forward to what’s next. What’s next: Honestly I have no clue!!! There aren’t any specific plans as such, just working towards making buyers happy through constant innovation & fun ideas. May start blogging again. Being a fashion Stylist as well I write about how often can one repeat their outfits? How to carry PeeBee’s? What to wear it with? And tips on Wardrobe Planning. Nutrient Talk with

Dr. Brundavani

S

he is a dedicated person, both towards nutritional science and people she examines (for all are not patients in fact even healthy people need nutritional guidance). She is hardworking, honest and being too focused on work has limited her popularity as a good pal or buddy, that makes her friend circle limited. Her family has been her support system all along and they know when she is on work she is entirely dedicated towards it. Why did you decide to pursue a career in nutrition and dietetics? Tell us where your interest in the field began and how your career unfolded? I had no plans for a career, but I have always been a winner, a gold medalist. A strong believer of education, I feel, ‘there is no life if one did not do post graduation’. I believed when scientists can work so hard to develop science the least we can do is study and understand it. Being a naive girl I was reluctant to give my final post graduation as I was getting married. My mother was angry for this; she said no girl should depend on her husband as lone support for life and one should be able to support herself for a living. Still, I believed in science and education but not education for work and living. My choice for nutrition was because I was a topper and toppers were given nutrition as it was a new difficult course that was started in 1980’s. After marriage in 1991, my mother’s thought came true; education was for work and work for living. I had to pursue medical studies in nutrition, being a very dedicated and passionate person for studies and science, I had less problems further and completed with eight points on the scale of ten with standing ovation and also published my work as a first Indian paper on abdominal fat where we can measure our own abdominal fat with simple tape measures. Your experiences in the field have been very diverse, how did you end up wearing so many hats throughout your career? I learnt to never equate education for work and livelihood so I took baby steps to equate these and it worked in my favor. I learned a lot, it helped me make my career and earn a living. I always choose what I wanted to learn and everything I wanted to do had nutrition as a core. So learning nutrition and practicing it was common pivotal. Is this where you envisioned you would be when you started? No, I had no vision when I started my career. But, today I have a very clear view of what I want. It mainly involves helping people to get nutritional advice free of cost and live a happy and healthy life no matter who they are or where they come from. The only constraint is I don’t have time for now; but hopefully soon. What has been your greatest professional success and biggest setback? Success: Standing ovation for my PhD. Setback: No time to take my vision further. Who have been the biggest inspirations for your career and why? After my mother’s advice, it surely is the appreciation I received for my

64 AUGUST, 2015

research endeavors from Dr. Anura Krupad. I worked with her at St. John’s Medical College. Then, my current boss at Rainbow Hospitals, Dr Ramesh Kancharia, I cannot thank him enough for the way he guided me and helped me be where I am today. I want to do something real big and dedicate it to him in future. From a nutrition and dietetic perspective, what do you think of organic foods and genetically-modified foods? I approve of organic foods but I cannot trust the organic claimed labels. You really need to know where you are buying from and keep your stash of vegetables and fruits fresh and clean. Do you see a shift happening in public perceptions of nutrition? People are looking forward to nutritional advice every day. Women are coming out to help themselves with good diet; mainly the age groups of 18 to 60. I feel, If they understand nutrition, they will take a message home and help their family and friends in clean and healthy living. What is a common nutrition myth that you can dispel? Food supplements, multigrain foods which are not scientifically proven, complete raw food diet and complete carb free diet. What are your thoughts on weight loss surgery? Helps for those with BMI greater than 40, but not for cosmetic reasons. What is your advice with regard to how to start and build a successful nutrition and dietetics? Sound nutritional knowledge, keen insight to understand the nutritional problems of your client and right advice with good health results. What is your favorite healthy snack? Eggs, milk, curd, boiled beans, peanuts, fruit and nuts Is there anything else you can tell us about yourself, your career, or the profession that would be interesting or helpful to others aspiring to enter and succeed in nutrition and dietetics? It is a field with good future; but It is very vast area and inter disciplinary. It needs a good team support and you should be very knowledgeable to sort out any nutritional concern with your know order bank. The failure for growth of nutrition in our country is because we are not updating to such advanced nutritional knowledge before practicing it. So it is not being a long standing professional choice for many nutritionists or dietiticians. Consult her at Rainbow Hospital, Banjara Hills. 9963664040

Fashion and makeup have always been a huge part of her life and her major inspiration behind the blog she is currently working on her blog, Red Confettii is all about fashion, makeup and lifestyle directed to women across India, Aatika is an aspiring makeup artist who strongly believes that, “Whatever is that you are doing, you should put your soul into it and wait for time to do its magic.” She loves bikes but prefers cars. Her dream car is the Range Rover Evoque, “Cars are versatile and convenient, be it the sizzling summers of Hyderabad or the random rain showers, it does not matter when you have a car. Plus another major advantage is that my hair and skin are not exposed to all the pollution and traffic. My current car is a real beauty, both inside and out. It is like a second home to me as I drive it. It’s also my first automatic car and the feeling of driving it is so luxurious. Initially, I drove the Rapid which was a manual drive. I have been driving the Superb for nearly two years now and we share a special bond”, Aatika adds.

Luxury she owns – Skoda Superb About Skoda Superb - The Superb is always a nice ride, It will flatten out most bumps but if you put it through really sharp potholes, the suspension will crash, making a loud thud. In the handling department too, the Superb scores well. But it reminds you of its size and weight every time you try to take a corner quicker than you usually would. The steering feedback is limited but it is not like the ones that disconnect you from what’s happening down on the road. Skoda Superb’s USP continues to be the great rear seat space and comfort with a decently-long feature list. But one thing that you will miss is the reverse camera. However, there are sensors though to ensure you don’t back it up into a wall.

ENTERTAINMENT Shahid Kapoor’s Wedding: What Went Down at the 90-Minute Shaadi This year’s big fat Bollywood wedding has come and gone and while it may not have been as big and fat as Bollywood is used to, it left a trail of broken hearts in its wake as former eligible bachelor Shahid Kapoor, 34, married Delhi girl Mira Rajput, 21, on July 7. Here’s a definitive look at what went down. At 11am on Tuesday, Shahid and Mira were married as per Arya Samaj rituals at a farmhouse in Rajokri allegedly belonging to members of the Radha Swami Satsang to which the families of both the bride and groom also belong. Security was heavy, with the street outside turned into a virtual fortress to keep out both the press and would-be gatecrashers. The ceremony lasted for 90 minutes and was witnessed by 40-odd guests, mostly close family and a select group of friends. No press was allowed in but fan clubs and friends posted pictures on social media.

Ranbir Kapoor on FTII Controversy: What students are asking for isn’t illogical

Actor Ranbir Kapoor has added his voice to those clamouring against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chief of the Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India or FTII. In a video posted on YouTube by the FTII student body, Ranbir says that “students want to look up to someone with a body of work they can aspire to.”Don’t judge me by my body of work,” is what Gajendra Chauhan said. The appointment of Gajendra Chauhan - best known for playing Yudhishtira in TV serial Mahabharata and for starring in some allegedly ‘soft-porn’ films - has led to weeks of protests from FTII alumnus and current students, who have held protest marches through the streets of Pune chanting slogans like “Yudhishtira, don’t teach us dharma.” The charge against Mr Chauhan is that he is not qualified to head the country’s premier film school, and that his status as a BJP member secured him the appointment. In the conversation posted on YouTube, Ranbir says that “the appointment of the new chairman has gone against the students’ wishes” and that “it is only fair” that they be led by someone who can inspire them to become better filmmakers. “Don’t think what the students are asking for is illogical, don’t think they are asking for the moon. They are just asking for a fair chance, a fair opportunity, correct faculty, correct syllabus,” says the 32-year-old Bombay Velvet star.

Lawrence Kasdan has worked for movies like Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Raiders of the Lost Ark. High Point: 123+ crores riding on Baahubali

Actress Diana Douglas, Mother of Michael Douglas, dies at 92

Veteran actress Diana Douglas, mother of actor Michael Douglas, died of cancer in a retirement home on July 3. She appeared in dozens of films and TV shows including Planes, Trains and Automobiles, ER and The West Wing. Her husband of 13 years, Donald Webster, confirmed the death of the actress. She was the first wife of actor Kirk Douglas and was married to the legendary actor from 1943 until their divorce in 1951. She had two sons, Michael and Joel, with Kirk. She appeared with her ex-husband and elder son in the 2003 film It Runs in the Family. The film marked her final big screen appearance. Born Diana Love Dill in Bermuda, she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where she met Kirk. She began her career with Warner Bros, and modelled on the cover of Life Magazine in 1943. Ms. Douglas was married to actor Bill Darrid from 1956 until his death in 1992. She later married Mr Webster in 2002. The actress officially retired from showbiz in 2008 at the age of 85.

Censor Board issuing U/A for adult movies?

The censor board in India has already been facing numerous brickbats after a few of its officers getting caught in bribery scandals. And now, following an RTI filed by an activist named Vihar Durve, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) blasted the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over irregularities in its functioning and for not following the stipulated regulations while certifying the feature films. Apparently, a censor panel has cleared a couple of films with UA verification which were earlier rejected a certificate by two censor committees. This was allegedly due to the intervention of the secretary to the chairperson. Initially, the two examining committees refused the English film’s, Gabriel and Three Can Play That Game, cutting that these two films are not suited for Indian audiences even with an A certificate. The makers then approached the revising committee and were still refused certificates. The CAG scouted out discrepancies in film certification, regarding the films that had been initially certified as ‘A’ being converted to U or U/A. So far, the CBFC converted 172 A category films into U/A category films and 166 U/A films to U category.

The craze speaks for itself. But there is prodigious hard work that produced such a hype as the feast of visuals offered by “Baahubali” are just impeccable. This hard work however demanded a stunning business of 123+ crores in the form of theatrical rights and what happens to his investment is something we will know in the coming days. Sources revealed that Telugu satellite fetched nearly 13 crores, while Tamil went for 8-10 crores and Hindi too fetched similar price. It’s surprising that Hindi and Tamil folks have paid similar price for theatricals and satellite. Including all these figures, we have to say that nearly 155+ crores business has happened around this magnum opus. Apart from scoring a blockbuster, the movie has to run consistently without opposition to pull every distributor and other businessmen to shores. Herculean task ahead.

Salman’s Controversial Tweet

Salman Khan has retracted his controversial tweets over the death sentence of 1993 Mumbai blasts accused Yakub Memon, following furore over his remarks, and has ‘apologised unconditionally’ for his remarks. Earlier the Bajrangi Bhaijan star had faced flak over his tweets that condemned the hanging of Yakub Memon and demanded that Tiger Memon be brought, to justice instead, with the BJP, Shiv Sena protesting outside his home and even his father Salim Khan called his remarks as ‘ignorant’. Salman tweeted out his apology and deleted his previous tweets on the issue. He also, however, condemned those he called his tweets anti-religious and maintained that he respected all faiths and religions. Earlier, Salman Khan on Sunday had tweeted out in support of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon saying his brother Tiger should be hanged instead. The hanging is likely to take place at Nagpur Central Jail.

Vajpayee Years

Terminator: Genisys Arnie always said he would be back, and he is, this time joined by Emilia ‘Game of Thrones’ Clarke and Aussie actor Jason Clarke (presumably no relation) for the fifth instalment in the Terminator series. The basic gist is this: resistance fighter Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) travels back in time at the request of leader John Connor (Clarke 1) to protect his mother Sarah (Clarke 2) from a terminator attack. If you don’t get bogged down in the high concept of it all, this is a fast-paced, action-packed piece of sci-fi cinema. Second Hand Husband Second Hand Husband is definitely not a classic, but it manages to make you laugh out loud at some points, largely entertains and keeps you engrossed. That is a bit of an achievement for a film that comes with zero expectations. Director Smeep Kang pairs Govinda’s daughter Tina Ahuja with the star of Punjabi films, Gippy Grewal and throws in Geeta Basra for a triangular love story. In spite of the handicaps, the film manages to largely entertain, because of its child-like naive approach and also largely due to some intermittent funny dialogues (written by Vaibhav and Shreya Srivastava).

Bahubaali A giant, golden statue of King Bhallala Deva is being erected in capital city of Mahishmati. Hundreds of slaves pull the multi-tonne monument, in an effort to erect it. One man has picked up the fallen rope. This, ladies and gentlemen, is not Sparta. This is Baahubali. Director SS Rajamouli has done some remarkable things with this monumental film, which is the first of a two-part tale. One, he’s made a film that actually gets better after intermission. Two, he’s given us a new epic with Baahubali. Here, we see (mostly) new gods and new heroes who are not bland replicas of mythological heroes.

Kashmir was an issue close to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s heart. There were repeated setbacks, first the Kargil war, General Pervez Musharraf’s coup in Pakistan, the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814 in December 1999 and the Parliament attack two years later. A.S. Dulat, chief of the Research and Analysis Wing under Vajpayee and India’s foremost Kashmir expert, brings nearly two decades of experience in the state to bear on the subject in this book.

All Yours, Stranger For those of you who don’t know me yet, I am Rivanah Bannerjee, a Kolkatan trying to find her footing in Mumbai. With every revelation, it seems the truth is far more twisted than Rivanah can imagine. Wickedly plotted, All Yours, Stranger—Novoneel Chakraborty’s gripping follow-up to his hugely popular Marry Me, Stranger— will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page. Book two of the Stranger trilogy.

TULIP

FORTUNE

Forecast For

August 2015

- Tarot reading by Nupur Heda

LEO

VIRGO

(born July 23 - August 22) The greatest take away from this month is that you need to break free from the monotony of your work, look around yourself, try to accomplish your tasks in different ways, approach your problems from new angles to find new solutions and grab any opportunities that come your way. You may have lost touch with some old friends, so the time is now just ripe to rekindle the relationships, for both emotional and material gains.

(born August 23 - September 22) What you need to learn from this month is that while it is alright to feel nostalgic at times if it makes you feel good and positive, you must not keep wallowing in past events, as it prevents you from enjoying the now to the fullest. By all means seek inspiration from the courageous manner in which you have overcome problems in the past, so that you can apply similar strategies to overcome problems in the present, but you must desist from dwelling too much in your history.

SAGITTARIUS

(born November 22 - December 21) Assess and analyze your current situation. Reflect! You need to put back the balance in your life. If you had been over-investing in your work at the cost of your personal relationships, take a step back and if required, don’t hesitate to take a different route. You may also plan to reduce your working hours for some time. In general, if you have experienced a loss or are feeling unrest, try to get to a natural setting that truly relaxes you and brings you the desired perspective. Getting back to your roots – your home or your regular, tested way of life and work – may be the answer to your turmoil. Learn from your mistakes and work to build a more solid foundation.

LIBRA

(born September 23 - October 22) Here lies the need for caution – not all that we desire and wish for is positive. So, be careful of what you desire now, as you may have to pay a heavy price for it, especially if it is far from practicality. Temptations are a common indicator of this month and when you are lured by primal, unhindered temptations, chances of you getting led astray are higher. Narrow your focus; do not try to do everything. If something seems too good to be true, it may really be too good to be true. Open your eyes and stay grounded.

78 AUGUST, 2015

SCORPIO

(born October 23 - November 21) Get rid of the blindfold. There will be a state of indecision, but with an impending decision waiting to be taken. Analyze your options and possible solutions. Stay true to yourself. The cards also call for breaking a stalemate, getting over and past a stuck situation. You may not find much happening in your life – yet, you would know, at the back of mind, that a situation or setting needs to be changed. Move on! Also, closing your eyes to a difficult situation now is not going to change your state much – so be courageous and pick a prudent choice.

(born December 22 - January 19) If an old wound has been opened, do not fear. Aim to remain neutral or at best, forgiving. Move on! You may be feeling resentment about something and it would be best to talk it out now – but patiently and calmly. Stop trying, disregard what you feel is not right for you and stop fighting for a lost cause. If you still feel something needs to be done about a conflicting situation, say ‘sorry’ but accept that beyond a point you can’t change or control others or situations.

(born January 20 - February 18) Be ready to change and adapt, as this will give you great results and immense happiness. However, be measured and don’t end up being a hasty, unmeasured fool. Weigh your options, before you take a major detour or change. Change and creation shall be the theme of the month, take advantage of this. Express yourself freely, but not harshly or callously. Follow your creative urges, make a special attempt to listen to your mind and instincts. Perseverance, persistence and balance shall hold you in a good stead in all you attempt now – creative the better!

GEMINI

(born May 21 - June 20) You need to move on from the mundane to the higher levels in life, as you have practically enjoyed every material pleasure that the world has to offer. However, to awaken the spiritual powers and intuition within you, you will have to learn to have better control over your emotions. There may also be certain irrational fears that you need to just abandon without a second thought. Meditate with determination, look deep within and you shall find the pearls of wisdom at the bottom of the ocean.

TAURUS

ARIES

(born Mar. 21 - April 19) Charge ahead now with full selfconfidence, but make sure that you have done your homework well, or else there is a danger that you may botch up things because of your impulsiveness. Also, take into consideration the consequences of your actions, especially if they are likely to hurt the sentiments of others. Be a good team-member, lead by example and help out your peers.

PISCES

(born February 19 - March 20) Relax and try going with the flow for a while. Stop feeling worked up for a situation that isn’t in your hands. Get in touch with your spiritual side to get the necessary spiritual nourishment, which shall rejuvenate you. If a difficult decision has been pending, don’t delay taking it any more. If this is about a relationship going awry, do make it a point to resolve the matter – but, don’t push it too much this month. And, if things seem to have reached a standstill, rather than feeling angry or frustrated, treat this period of suspension as a catalyst for better times ahead.

TULIP

CAPRICORN

FORTUNE

AQUARIUS

(born April 20 - May 20) The cards suggest that what you need to be careful about during this phase is to be fully alert and try to keep negativities at bay. Take control of yourself, meditate and try to stay balanced. When someone says something that hurts you, make sure that you do not react impulsively, but count to 10 and respond with due consideration. Also, you need to take the responsibility for your actions.

CANCER

(born June 21 - July 22) By far the biggest lesson you need to learn from this month reading is that even the greatest of setbacks do not mean that it is the end of the road. You have to learn to let go, pick yourself up, analyze the mistakes you made in trusting the people you trusted, or investing your money where you did and resolve not to repeat them in the future. Also noteworthy is the universal assurance that it is the darkest before daybreak and that you need to have faith that things will get better soon. Most importantly, the Angel says that you have the power to avert the danger and hopelessness is not an option. Let go and accept – rely on the positive power within yourself to draw wisdom and peace.
