ADAH SHARMA NAMED PETA
INDIA’S 2024 PERSON OF THE YEAR
To celebrate her work in support of an animal-friendly fashion industry, her compassionate action to help spare elephants from the misery of captivity, and her tireless advocacy on behalf of all living beings, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has named meat-free Bollywood star Adah Sharma its 2024 Person of the Year.
This year, Sharma partnered with PETA India to gift a life sized mechanical elephant to a Kerala temple in recognition of its compassionate decision never to own or hire live elephants for ceremonies. Sharma also starred in a provocative campaign against leather for the group, in which she appeared to be “skinned alive” to call attention to the suffering of more than 1.4 billion cows, sheep, goats, and millions of other animals who are violently slaughtered each year for their skin. She actively encourages her nearly 10 million Instagram followers to embrace animal-friendly clothing – and previously modelled the sustainable styles in PETA India’s first-ever vegan fashion lookbook.

THE CHAI CULTURE OF HYDERABAD: A WARM AND INVITING EXPERIENCE
Hyderabad, a city filled with richness in history and culture, has more to its fame than beautiful monuments and good food. It is also famous for its exuberant tea/chai culture. Chai, the humble cup of tea, has become an integral part of daily life in Hyderabad, speaking much about warm hospitality, friendship and warmth. Take a peep into the rich Chai culture in Hyderabad, tracing history and significance while taking an in-depth look at unique experiences, some of which might go undisclosed with lesser-known facts and insights into the evolving industry trends of the city.
By Arshad Jamal, Founder of Eden Homestay
A Historical Perspective
Chai, or tea, has an old history; in the olden days, it was unlike the modern days. During the Mughal period, however, this was the fashionable drink of the ruling class. The Nizams, who ruled Hyderabad for over two hundred years, fostered tea drinking very popularly. Persian influences they brought to the South helped shape a sophisticated system of etiquette around tea that, today, is a beautiful and vibrant chai culture.
The Culture of Chai
Hyderabad is the city where chai is not a drink but an experience. The ingredients for making chai may include a combination of black tea, milk, sugar, and spices like cardamom, ginger, and cloves. For chai to brew, it becomes a sensory experience where the nose is teased by the fragrant smell of spices hanging in the air, inviting people to come together and share their stories.
Chai is usually served in handleless small cups that enable the drinkers to warm themselves up from the heat of the tea. Drinking chai accompanies lively conversations, and it is a social experience meant to create bonding between friends, family, and even a stranger.
Hyderabad is replete with hundreds of chai stalls and cafes, and nearly everyone has a unique appeal. Be it flamboyant roadside stalls or cozy cafes, the choice ensures that there are tantalizing options for chai lovers. Some of the most talked-about chai stops include:
Irani Cafés: Among the more popular bistros that have so much history behind them along with delicious offerings to boot, these institutions, like Café Niloufer and Shah Ghouse, are institutions. Irani cafés feature various teas, like the world-famous "Irani Chai," which has a creamy mouthfeel with otherwise impossible flavor. Irani Chai is often served with Osmania biscuits or even Khara biscuits.
Street Chai stalls: Hyderabad is full of tea vendors—the chai vendors. These chai stalls, managed by very amiable chai wallahs, serve steaming cups of chai at low, affordable prices. Sipping chai while watching the world go by is quintessential Hyderabad.
Hyderabadi Modern Cafés: Hyderabad has recently been embracing the modern café culture that serves innovative mixes and fusion drinks. The Chai Point and Chai Shai cater to a younger lot experimenting with flavors like the masala chai latte and iced chai.
Chai Stalls and Cafés
Hyderabad Unknown Facts About Chai
A chai revival is steaming in Hyderabad and new, innovative flavors such as masala and saffroninfused brews overwhelm the stands. Local tea artisans experiment with unique ingredients, and it becomes the go-to place for chai enthusiasts searching for both nostalgia and a little bit of novelty.
⦁ Chai as a Business: Now, the Hyderabad chai business has become a huge industry, with several entrepreneurs starting their own tea brands and cafes. There have also been entrepreneurs who have started chai subscription services, delivering fresh blends of tea to customers' doorsteps.
⦁ Chai and Health: While chai is consumed for its flavor, people here within the city also widely enjoy its benefits towards health. For instance, spicy ginger and cardamom spices in the preparation of chai possess anti-inflammatory properties besides digestive powers, making it an equally comforting hot beverage.
⦁ Chai and Technology: Ironically technology too has been on the rise and has influenced Chai culture. Apps and platforms emerged where people order chai online to reach out to a tech-savvy generation in the making.
Chai culture in Hyderabad penetrates across ages, castes, and backgrounds. A uniting force that brings together people—a bevy of friends catching up after work, colleagues discussing business over a cup, or families spending a lazy afternoon—the consumption of chai makes them all unite; thus, it is integral to the social fabric of Hyderabad.

With years of travel across India and a knack for uncovering hidden gems, she’s redefining how we view Indian hospitality and homegrown brands.
Q. As a luxury lifestyle and travel blogger, how would you describe your approach to travel and experiences?
I’ve always believed that travel isn’t just about visiting places; it’s about immersing yourself in the essence of a destination. For me, it’s the little details—like sipping on freshly brewed coffee at sunrise on a boutique property terrace or noticing how the folds of a silk scarf carry the story of an Indian weaver’s craft. I don’t chase itineraries; I chase feelings and stories.
As someone who’s explored countless luxury stays, I can confidently say that Indian hospitality is unparalleled. The warmth, the attention to detail, the sense of personal connection—these aren’t just services; they’re experiences crafted with heart.
Q. What are your thoughts on India’s potential to dominate global tourism with its rich heritage?
India has everything—seriously, everything. We have centuries-old architecture like the palaces of Rajasthan, serene backwaters in Kerala, and bustling cities like Hyderabad with layers of history. But it’s not just about the visuals; it’s about the why. Why do these places exist? What’s their story? We are a land of narratives, and tourism needs to amplify that connection.
Take flavours, for instance. The food of India isn’t just varied; it’s cultural shorthand. In just one state, you’ll find flavours that change every 100 kilometres, reflecting local spices, history, and even weather. If there’s one thing Indians do better than anyone else, it’s tying people to places through food, art, and culture.
Q. What would you like travelers to take away from their experiences in India?
I want travellers—both domestic and international—to realize that India isn’t just a destination; it’s an emotion. Every corner of this country has something unique to offer, whether it’s the bustling streets of Jaipur, the serenity of Coorg, or the culinary extravaganza of Hyderabad.
But more than that, I want people to see the value of Indian brands and experiences. You can style your life around homegrown products and still feel like you’re living a global luxury lifestyle. We have everything you could want—quality, authenticity, and a rich cultural connection.
Q. What’s your vision for Indian tourism and hospitality?
My vision is to see India celebrated for what it truly is—a kaleidoscope of experiences. I want to highlight boutique stays where history meets comfort, dining experiences that redefine flavours, and brands that represent the best of Indian craftsmanship. By creating immersive, visually compelling content, I hope to inspire travellers to choose India not just for its sights, but for its soul. I also want Indian brands to own their space on the global stage, because no one does it quite like us.
Shivani Singh
Shivani Singh (@whimsthatwoo) balances life as a corporate leader, entrepreneur, and founder of Spark a Dream, an NGO empowering underprivileged child through skill development. Yet, her true passion lies in travel—a love that began in a 6th-grade geography class when vivid descriptions of Argentina ignited a lifelong wanderlust.
What started as a diary of dream destinations grew into a list of over 161 places, fuelling her exploration. Early work trips to exotic locations deepened her passion, making travel more than an escape—it became a way to connect with cultures and cherish life’s simple moments. Becoming a travel influencer was a natural step, turning her childhood dream into a mission to inspire others to explore the world’s magic.
Q. Do you prefer solo travel or group adventures and why?
I definitely prefer solo travel. There’s something incredibly liberating about exploring a destination on your own. It gives me the freedom to explore at my own pace, choose my own experiences, and fully immerse myself in the destinations I visit. Traveling alone allows for a deeper connection with the places and cultures I encounter. It’s a chance to step out of my comfort zone, reflect, and discover new things about myself along the way. While group adventures have their own charm, the independence and personal growth that come with solo travel are what I truly value.
Q. Is there a dream destination that is still on the bucket list? If yes, which place is it?
Yes, one of my ultimate travel dreams is to go on a long backpacking trip through South America, starting from the northern tip, perhaps in Colombia, and making my way down to the southernmost part, in Patagonia, Argentina. I want to make this trip beyond just visiting wellknown spots and place; I want to engage with local communities, and experience their unique traditions. South America, with its endless diversity, is a dream waiting to unfold. Although I’ve already visited Colombia and absolutely loved the experience, there’s still so much more to explore. The country’s vibrant culture, with its rich history, lively music, and welcoming people, left a lasting impression on me.
Q. What is the most memorable interaction you have has with locals during your trips?
There have been countless memorable interactions, as I always make it a point to connect with locals during my travels. But if I had to choose, two stand out the most:
Chhattisgarh: Staying with the tribal communities of Bastar was unforgettable. The breathtaking landscapes and the timeless grace of the people left a lasting impression. A memorable interaction was with a Shaman, who shared traditional practices and the tribe’s deep connection to nature and spirituality. Connecting with the women of the tribe, whose faces reflected generations of stories and traditions, was equally profound. But what truly stood out was the warmth and kindness of the people, making the experience deeply immersive and enriching. It’s an experience worth revisiting to further understand their way of life. Egypt: While Egypt is famous for its incredible pyramids and ancient temples, the most memorable part of my visit was the people. Egyptians are incredibly warm and friendly—always smiling and eager to share their stories. I learned so much about the country’s rich history and the pride they take in their heritage. One interaction that stood out was during a visit to the Valley of the Kings, where I spoke with a local guide who explained the significance of the tombs and the fascinating history behind them.
Q. How do you manage your travel content while staying in the moment?
Honestly, it was absolutely hard in the beginning. I used to carry my camera everywhere, all the time, trying to capture every moment, but in the process, I ended up missing out on many experiences. I was so focused on capturing stories that I forgot to actually live them. I realized this eventually, and I made a rule for myself: Whenever I visit a place, I allocate a certain time to shoot content, and after that, I shut down my camera. This allows me to fully immerse myself in the moment, without distractions. It’s all about balance now!
Of course, there are exceptions. Sometimes, you can't help but capture a genuine, spontaneous moment—like a stunning sunset or an unexpected encounter with locals—and when that happens, I make sure to quickly snap the shot and then put the camera away again. It’s all about living the journey first and documenting it second. This balance allows me to be fully present while still sharing the magic with others.
Apoorva Rao
Apoorva Rao (@apytravelstories) has always been deeply fascinated by the idea of exploring new places, cultures, and perspectives. Growing up, she spent countless hours watching travel shows and channels, which ignited a passion for adventure and storytelling. From an early age, she knew she wanted to pursue a career that would allow them to combine her love for travel with creativity. Becoming a travel influencer felt like a natural progression, as it gave her the opportunity to document her journeys and share it with an audience that values exploration just as much.
Q. Is there any trip that changed the way you looked at life?
Yes, my trip to Ladakh was truly life-changing. I embarked on a bike trip and found myself stranded in a remote area with no network connectivity and a treacherous terrain to navigate. It was an incredibly challenging and humbling experience. I had to rely on sheer willpower and resourcefulness to make my way out of that isolated environment. This taught me how finite and fragile life is and gave me a profound appreciation for every moment. It changed the way I view challenges, making me realize that even in the toughest situations, perseverance can lead to incredible growth.
Q. What was your first trip as a travel influencer and how did it shape your career?
My first trip as a travel influencer was a backpacking journey across Europe in 2014. It was a transformative experience that introduced me to the joy of immersive travel. From navigating new cities to embracing diverse cultures, I fell in love with every aspect of the process. That trip not only solidified my passion for travel but also helped me understand the potential of storytelling and connecting with people through shared experiences. It became the cornerstone of my journey as a travel influencer and laid the foundation for my career.
Q. How do you choose your next destination?
I like to ensure variety in the destinations I explore, as it keeps my travels exciting and diverse. I consciously alternate between different types of locations—whether it’s a serene beach getaway, a destination steeped in history, or the bustling energy of cityscapes. This approach allows me to cater to a wide audience while also challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and experience something new every time.
Q. What’s the most important lesson you have learned while traveling?
One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. Travel often throws unexpected challenges your way—be it delays, cultural differences, or unforeseen circumstances. I’ve realized that being open-minded and flexible is key to fully embracing the beauty of travel. Additionally, I’ve come to understand the value of connection—whether it’s with the locals, fellow travellers, or even the environment around me. These interactions have taught me empathy, gratitude, and a deeper respect for the world we live in.
Sowkya Reddy
Sowkya Reddy (@sowkya.reddy) began traveling and trekking in the Himalayas at 19, driven by a deep love for the mountains and their stories. At first, she simply blogged about her adventures and shared glimpses of nature, long before the concept of influencing even existed. One day, a friend who followed her work saw something in the photos and videos that they hadn’t recognized. She encouraged them to pursue photography professionally. Initially hesitant, she is now grateful for her nudge, as it completely changed the course of her journey.
Q. What’s one place you would visit over and over again without getting bored?
Out of all the places I’ve travelled, the answer is simple. I can never get bored of the mountains, whether it’s in Kashmir or anywhere else with peaks that call to me. Internationally, Bali is my go-to—I've already been there four times. And as for the Himalayas, I’ve lost count, having been there over 15 times.
Q. What is the funniest travel mishap that turned into great story?
My last trek to Pin Parvati was an unforgettable experience. We had to complete a two-day trek in one day because the weather conditions didn’t allow us to camp. It was pitch dark, and we had to navigate treacherous mountain paths, walking along the edges with only headlamps to guide us. The most challenging part was crossing a fully flowing river in the freezing cold, late at night. We held each other’s hands, determined to make it through together. Looking back, that night remains etched in my memory — it taught me the strength of resilience and how to stay mentally strong, no matter the obstacles.
Q. How do you stay healthy and maintain energy while travelling?
Traveling energizes me in a way nothing else does. There’s something about the excitement of a new place that naturally wakes me up early, without even trying. The thrill of exploration keeps me feeling vibrant and alive. As for health, I’m always cautious, especially with water, but touchwood, I’ve never gotten seriously sick on any of my journeys.
Q. What’s the most Instagram worthy place you have every visited?
For me, Turkey is undoubtedly an Instagramworthy destination. Every corner feels like it’s straight out of a dream — the landscapes, architecture, and culture are all incredibly photogenic and surreal. And of course, the Himalayas — they never cease to surprise me. Every visit brings something new and awe-inspiring.
Keerthi Narayan
Keerthi Narayan (@keerthi_narayan) is an IT sales professional from Bangalore, but her heart has always belonged to travel. She has explored three countries— Dubai, Thailand, and Sri Lanka and visited many beautiful cities across India. Her passion for travel began as a desire to see new places, experience different cultures, and meet new people. Over time, she started capturing these experiences through content, sharing them with friends and family. The positive response and encouragement she received motivated her to take it further and share her adventures with a wider audience. She finds joy not only in traveling but also in documenting the journey, which allows her to connect with like-minded travellers who appreciate the beauty of the world.
Q. How do you balance authentic travel experiences with creating content?
For me, the travel experience always comes first. I try and make content and keep some time aside for it and make sure to fully immerse myself in a destination post that or vice versa. Once I feel connected to the place, I start capturing my experience in a way that feels genuine. I avoid overly staged photos and instead focus on sharing real, unfiltered moments. My aim is to inspire others by showing the true essence of each destination, not just the picture-perfect spots, but the authentic experiences that make it unique.
Q. What is the most unique tradition or culture you’ve experienced in India?
India is so diverse, and every region offers something unique. One tradition that stands out to me is the Onam festival in Kerala. Celebrated with vibrant colours, intricate floral carpets (pookalam), and sumptuous feasts, it’s a celebration of abundance and togetherness. What I found most fascinating is how the entire community comes together during Onam— irrespective of background, caste, or religion—to celebrate. The Sadhya is my most favourite meal. The atmosphere is filled with warmth, unity, and a deep sense of tradition. Kerala’s culture, especially the way it embraces nature, food, and community, has had a lasting impact on me. It’s a reminder of the beauty of simplicity and living in harmony with the environment.
Q. What is one underrated state or region that you believe deserves more attention?
Kannur in Kerala is one of the most underrated destinations in South India. While places like Kovalam and Varkala often steal the limelight, Kannur offers a peaceful vibe with stunning beaches that are less crowded and remarkably clean. The place has a serene, untouched beauty, with hidden gems like the Payyambalam Beach and the pristine nature around it. The region is steeped in culture too, with traditional Theyyam performances that are unique to the area. Kannur is perfect for travellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a more tranquil experience, less crowded beaches and I believe it’s a destination that should be on every traveller’s radar.
Q. Beach sunsets or mountain sunrises – which one would you pick?
Beaches and beach sunsets are undoubtedly beautiful but mountains have my heart. I’d choose a mountain sunrise every time. There’s something truly special about watching the first light break through the clouds and gently touch the peaks with golden light. The quiet of the early morning, the birds chirping, crisp air, and that peaceful moment as the world slowly comes alive. The mountains have this calming energy, and when you add a sunrise to the mix, it creates a sense of wonder that stays with you long after the sun is up. It’s one of those experiences that really connects with you on a deeper level.
Sowmya Boyanpally
Sowmya Boyanpally (@sowmyaboyanpally) has been working as international cabin crew for the past 9 years. As a child, she was always fascinated with the idea of traveling to beautiful destinations and had a deep interest in planes. However, as she grew older, that dream faded amidst the hustle and bustle of life. After completing her graduation, when it was time to choose a career, she knew she wanted to do something that would serve her soul, and a 9-5 desk job was something she could never fit into. She chose a career that brought her childhood dream into reality.
Q. Which destination has surprised you the most and why?
Everyone talks about how beautiful Italy or Europe or London is, but the country which I feel is underrated is Turkey. It is so scenic and breathtaking. Everything about Turkey is so beautiful be it the history or the architecture, the culture and not to forget the Turkish cuisine, it’s a total 10 on 10.
Q. What’s one travel hack that you always follow?
Travel hack for someone who travels as often as me especially if u travel to different countries is to get a multi-currency card such as Revolut, Youtrip etc. This saves us a hassle of changing currency physically and offers a better exchange rate. And another travel hack would be is getting travel vacuum bags. These are extremely helpful if you’re packing a lots of winter coats or jackets in your luggage as it saves a lot of space.
Q. What’s the weirdest food you’ve had while traveling?
I am a kind of person who is extremely fond of food and I love trying different cuisines. However, my taste buds restrict me certain kinds of meat and seafood.so coming to the question, I wouldn’t say the weirdest food instead I would say food which was definitely not up to my liking was oysters and then once I was in Korea and I went to try octopus but just by the looking at it I couldn’t so for me it’s oysters so far.
Q. If you could live in one country for the rest of your life, which one would it be and why?
Well, for me the factors I would consider to settle down in a country has to be safety, food and the weather or where my loved ones are nearby. Considering the factors above and not forgetting the fact that I am a hard-core Hyderabadi and that absolutely love my city my favourites would be Hyderabad, Dubai or New Zealand.

Q. How has your perspective on travel changed since you started sharing your adventures?
After I started documenting my adventures, I also realized that I push my limits. When I create content, I want to showcase the best of it. I also want to experience more, which I couldn’t have otherwise. Now, I’m more adventurous and experimental, and that’s how my perspective on travel has changed.
Q. What goes into planning the perfect travel post or reel?
There is a lot that goes into planning a proper post. The first step is writing a proper script, which includes what I want my audience to like and see. The script also contains a lot of information because my posts are very informative. I hope my viewers always take away something valuable from my posts. I also try to include tips and tricks. And of course, the execution of it all.
Q. If you could relive one trip, which one would it be and why?
I want to relive my Malaysian trip; I visited Lang Tengah. It is a small island that is so pristine and secluded that I had never heard of it before. That was my first-ever scuba dive. Since then, my love for scuba diving has grown, and I am now a professional scuba diver and an advanced open water diver. That trip is very memorable to me.
Q. Do you have any travel tips for people who love to travel?
My tip for people who love to travel is to go beyond the limits and try to explore more local things. If you want to truly experience a place, eat local and meet locals. Try hiking, go underwater, etc. That’s what travel is all about. It’s great to be adventurous. And please, do not throw trash or litter anywhere.

Celebrating Sankranthi
A Festival of joy, food and kites.
KITE FLYING TRADITION
One of the most exciting aspects of Sankranthi is kite flying. The sky comes alive with colourful kites of all shapes and sizes, symbolizing joy and freedom. Families and friends gather on rooftops, competing to see whose kite soars the highest. In states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, kite flying is an integral part of the celebration, with festivals like the International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad drawing visitors from across the globe.
PEOPLE TAKE ON SANKRANTI
Sheetal, Housewife
The Sankranti celebration signifies the sun's journey from the Dhanu rashi to the Makar rashi, marking the beginning of Uttarayan. A special dish for Sankranti is Pongal, made with jaggery and rice, which is then offered to God as naivedyam. We also make special laddus with sesame seeds, which are believed to boost immunity and signify good fortune. We also offer kusrallu to the elders and receive their blessings.
Madhavi D, Advocate
We celebrate Sankranthi with the vibrant tradition of kite flying. I love heading to the rooftops with family and friends, competing to cut each other’s kites while enjoying delicious snacks like sakinalu and ariselu.
NagaRaju, Advocate
Sankranthi is a grand three-day festival. I particularly enjoy Bhogi Mantalu, where we light bonfires using old items, and the festive atmosphere is enhanced by colourful rangolis and traditional delicacies like pongal.

Sankranti is a vibrant and joyful festival for Telugu people, celebrated with unique traditions in both villages and cities. It begins with the Bhogi Bonfire, where families burn old items to welcome new beginnings. Colourful rangoli designs (muggulu) adorn homes, and delicious dishes like sweet Pongal, ariselu, and garelu are shared among loved ones. Haridasu folk singers and decorated oxen spread blessings, while kite fights light up the sky.
Sandhya, Software Professional
In Tamil Nadu, Sankranti is celebrated as Pongal, a grand four-day harvest festival filled with rich traditions. The festival begins with Bhogi Pongal, where families burn old items in a bonfire to mark renewal and clean their homes. On the second day, intricate kolams (rangoli designs) are made with rice flour, and the highlight of the celebration is cooking sweet Pongal in clay pots, letting it overflow to signify abundance. The third day, Mattu Pongal, honours cows and bulls, with them being bathed, decorated, and worshipped. Villages host traditional events like Jallikattu, while families bond over festive meals and cultural performances. The final day, Kaanum Pongal, is for outings and spending time with loved ones.
Maninder Singh, Housewife
