Ram pothineni
Known for his boyish charms and perfect comic timing, actor Ram Pothineni has gained a lot of fans for his boy-next-door charm. However, for his latest release iSmart Shankar, Ram has undergone a very clear physical revamp that has left countless Telugu girls swooning over his perfect biceps and abs. Celebrity fitness trainer Venkat Madamala, owner of Torque Fitness takes us behind-thescenes of this insane transformation. When and how did Ram’s transformation begin? We started around the end of November last year. It took 4 months of transformation for the sixpack. Ram is an ectomorph body type, so he was always thin with a slight exception of the abdomen, which is common for South Indian men. But his muscle vascularity and muscle formation were low, and he was a very light body type. And by March this year we achieved the goal of a six-pack body. What was something unique about this transformation? I have known Ram Sir for a while now. Back in 2011-12, we had worked together for about two or three months. And after that we had worked together for a few other films. But he had never approached me for a transformation, but this time around, he felt that he needed to have a six-pack as it would go better with his project and he has been very dedicated throughout the process. In my journey of 13 years, he is one of the very few people who was so driven. He would strictly stick to the diet plans and would workout for the complete two-hour period no matter what, and that dedication really paid off, and the film has also done well. I really want to thank him for his unconditional belief and support throughout this period. How did you adjust your timings around his shooting schedule? His shoot timings were from seven in the morning to seven in the evening. So, we would train before seven in the mornings and after the shoot he would take a preworkout meal and start by eight and workout until around ten in the night. Tell us a little about his regimen. Initially, when we had started, we only had a morning workout session for about a week. For this week, we only had one muscle and two muscle circuit training. From the next week onwards we had two sessions, one and a half hours in the morning and one and a half hours in the evening. For the last two months, we did four hours per day with two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. During the four months of transformation, we changed about 4-5 diet plans. Initially, we reduced carbs and fats. We increased the protein content to help with muscle formation, be it whey proteins, chicken, fish or eggs. To ensure that there won’t be a problem of acidity because of the increase in protein content, we also incorporated some fibre content into the diet with greens like broccoli, spinach and kale in the form of veggie salads and steamed veggies. We also had cucumbers, corn for snacking in the evenings and fruits like guavas, sweet lime and musk melon. How has having a baby changed your lives? We’re definitely more responsible individually and collectively. When and how did your first meeting take place? The first time the two of us met was in an arranged setting. As I had completed industrial training in Europe and Ashu was in her final year of college. Our families thought we were ready for marriage. We both were the first people either of us met with the prospect of marriage. Our daughters call it cheesy but our first meeting although was meant to be an hour long, lasted five whole hours, while our families just waited. After which, we gave it a minute before we finalized anything. Not long after we exited Ashu’s home I realized there was nothing that I didn’t like about her, in fact she was everything I would look for in a life partner. Next thing I know, my father was picking up boxes of sweets and we were driving back to my now In-laws’ place! How has marriage changed your lives? Marriage made us grow in our own ways but together. It made us better versions of ourselves, even regarding our fashion choices!! Ashu: I’ve become fearless and confident because I know I have someone who’ll always have my back and will guide me! Vicky: It’s almost as if she brings out the positive in me. I’ve also learnt to be more caring! How long have you been married and what are some of the most memorable moments of your married life? A period of 25 years is too long to short list such moments, considering we’ve lived through so many together! But something the two of us can without a doubt agree on is when our daughters became a part of our world. Every moment with them is precious! What is your advice to younger couples for a happy marriage? Understanding each other is so important! Try to think from your better half’s shoe and it’ll make things so much easier when you know why he/she (mostly she) is doing things a certain way! Try to understand when they need their space; give it to them! Don’t just say you love them, show it

NOORA SULTANA AND AHMED SALMAN When and how did your first meeting take place? I met him when I started my Med School. During those days, I used to go to the gym, and we actually saw each other back then. Later on, coincidentally our families got in touch and it went further. What has marriage taught you about life? Marriage is not just a two/four-day function. It’s about each of our lives changing together and how good we balance the change. Initially, nothing was as easy as we think it would be. But slowly we started appreciating each other for little things, started getting responsible in small things like he would help me out in my work and I would understand how important it is for him to give time to his work. It’s always the small things that matter. “Not to Hurry in a relationship” is what I learnt. Moments in your married life you would never forget. The first two years. First year was hectic cause we are Hyderabadis, so we have our wedding celebrations going on for half a year at least (the jumaagis, other daawats, etc). Our first trip to Europe had to be the best of all. It was like exploring the world with the one you’re most comfortable with. What has been the most important factor in your happy marriage? Patience & Positivity. My father would always explain me how important it is to have patience after getting married. He would always say give your married life 2 years of immense patience and things would automatically set right for good after that. And indeed, it was absolutely true.

Both of us knew each other since quite some time but had never spoken to each other or officially met. We both met on Facebook. A day after Monu’s birthday, he added me on Facebook and I realized his birthday had just passed. Using that as an excuse, I started the conversation which went on for the next few hours. Following the regular chatting through social media, within no time we exchanged numbers and soon were busy texting each other. We went out on dinners, movies and for coffee dates. A few months later, we took a step forward and informed our parents about us. Within no time, they arranged for an official meeting and we were engaged. Do you think marriage has changed you in anyway? Honestly, marriage hasn’t changed us at all! We believe that we are still the same people. But definitely marriage has taught us a lot of things. It taught us to love each unconditional; It taught us to be more responsible. Now we are more dependable on each other for everything. Tell us about any funny or memorable experience. We literally ran off from the Gurudwara as soon as we got married without out even completing all the rituals and our parents came running towards us and reminded us about them. Also, when my husband got down on his knees during our engagement to ask for my hand and I was just shocked and didn’t know how to react. What according to you has been the key to a happy married life? We believe that the key essentials to live a happy married life are dedication and commitment towards each other. Respecting each other’s choices and decisions and supporting each other at all times.

Sohail had expressed his intention to get married to me way back in 2009, but I was only 17 at that time, and so my parents did not agree to the alliance. We met again in 2012 when Sohail and his family approached my parents with an official rishta. And we finally got married in 2014. What do you think marriage has changed in your life? According to us, marriage is all about new experiences; It automatically makes you a more responsible person in every aspect of life and this is something that increases tenfold in case there is a child involved. Taking up this responsibility in the right manner is what keeps the ship sailing. What was the most memorable moment in your married life? The most memorable moment was definitely the birth of our daughter. Bringing a child into the world is a blessing like no other. Nothing to top that magical day. What do you think is most important for a happy marriage? We feel that the most important thing for a happy marriage is healthy communication. Couples should always ensure that they have an open exchange of emotion, desires, and beliefs. One thing that we have believed right from the beginning was that we treated each other like friends more than spouses, this is really something that drastically reduces the possibility of anything keeping you apart.

When and how did the two of you meet? We met at a computer class and since he was always late to class, I thought here’s a guy with no sense of punctuality. I think marriage has made us more responsible and we’ve evolved together as two human beings with a better understanding of each other. As all couples do, we’ve battled misunderstandings and dealt with differences in temperament and have emerged stronger over the years. Amir has been a very supportive husband who has encouraged me to grow as an individual and has granted me the freedom to be my own person which I think is an essential ingredient of a happy marriage! Of course, I grant him the same. What are a few things you’ve always enjoyed doing together? We enjoy doing small things together like having a morning cup of tea or coffee together, talking and laughing about anything at all! Small things enjoyed together become big reasons for celebration of a union. Other things we enjoy doing together is going in weekend drives to quaint places. What do you think is essential for a happy marriage? Mutual respect, trust and love are very important qualities in marriage. Giving each other space to grow as an individual and the freedom to express oneself comfortably is essential. Acceptance, validation and acknowledgment of each other goes a long way in maintaining the congeniality in a marriage. Conflicts, arguments and misunderstandings are a natural outcome relationships and people living together and so happens in marital relationships too. However, conflicts can be settled amicably and with dignity if handled well which is possible through open and respectful communication. Spending quality time with each other and enjoying the other person’s interests helps keep the excitement alive in marriage!

Faridah Lakhani What is your first preference for picking a place to visit? A new location is always important, I don’t like travelling to the same place twice unless its necessary. The world is a very big place, new places and new experiences are always important.
What was your most recent travel destination? Tell us a little about the experience. My last trip was to Florida, I went there through Bali which was an anniversary gift from my sons. I went to Bali with my husband and had a wonderful time. Its luscious forests and surreal temples really made it feel like we had travelled to a new world. Florida on the other hand was a wake up call back to reality. Teeming with all sorts of people that are always looking for fun the contrasting elements of the two destinations really make you think about how much more is left to explore. What according to you makes places like Bali or Laos which are known for their cultural and beauty popular destinations? The multiculturalism and the little aspects of home that you can spot in places like Paris all the way to Dubai are what make big cities a very easy place to live and travel to. The don’t completely take you out of your comfort zone which I believe is a very important element of travelling. In out interconnected world big cities have become saturated. On the contrary, what are some unique things one can experience in big cities like Dubai, Paris and Singapore? It really depends on the type of people of you are, any location can be magical as long as you have the right person by your side. Europe is known to be a popular choice among travellers, what in your opinion are the places in Europe that are must-visits? Lisbon, Granada, Paris, Malaga, and Monaco are all locations in Europe that have stayed close in my heart. I have not travelled to a lot of places there so my opinion is biased on this matter but I would highly recommend going to these places. Could you give us a few tips for travelling? Always be open to new experiences. I personally never take tours as they tend to focus on the more tourist attractions, finding out locations by yourself and going at your own pace is always a better option and feels more like a proper trip rather than a vacation.

To our advantage, the Patong beach was right across our hotel where we spent most of our evenings. During the trip we also managed to tick another thing off the bucket by attempting our luck at deep sea diving. And I must comment, it was one hell of an experience. Bangkok is a place mainly for shopping and food, typical Thai food. The Jungle Safari here, was one of its kind too. With the open zoo, the freedom to interact with wild animals at a very close level was mind blowing. The giraffes, chimps, elephants etc., all just an arm distance away, it couldn’t have got better. There was also a floating market about a 100 kms drive from the city. There are Indian restaurants around every lane so food was never a problem. Coming to language- Hand gestures and key words worked best for us. Commuting was extremely convenient; you end up finding taxis between every two cars. On the whole, it was an amazing trip and if you like to pump up your honeymoon, Thailand is where you should be.”
