Paris

In the City of Light, there’s more to romance than chocolates, lingerie, and flowers. At the five-mile Love Run, partners are tied together at the wrist and up against whimsical challenges along the way. Everyone who visits Paris for the first time probably has the same punchlist of major attractions to hit: The Louvre, Notre Dame, The Eiffel Tower, etc. Just make sure you leave some time to wander the city’s grand boulevards and eat in as many cafes, bistros and brasseries as possible. And don’t forget the shopping—whether your tastes run to Louis Vuitton or Les Puces (the flea market), you can find it here.

Welcome to Hyderabad, the city where people love to eat. Hyderabad’s indulge so much in eating that there is no joint in the city that is free from hoggers. Your boutique or salon might not have many customers but that’s never the case at any of our patisseries and eateries.

Tell us something about your designs at the Blenders Pride fashion show and your concept of ‘Pride’ for the show? This was my biggest collaboration with Blenders Pride Fashion Tour and my concept for the show is “My Expression, My Pride”. Sculptural, futuristic and signifying different moods of expression, our collection at the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2018 celebrates the miracle within each of us. A miracle where trampled dreams rise, where desire spirals and ambition races to embrace it all. Drawing from one’s own distinct style, we believe in celebrating one’s individual personality and choices, and creating a unique identity. Stereotypes exist because so few of us are willing to break them; but if you are sure of who you are, you can constantly and consistently surprise both yourself and the world by your achievements. And then, that becomes a true expression of who you are. Through my association with Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2018, I take pride in showcasing for the first time in Hyderabad– where expression would meet form. What is a typical day like in Gaurav Gupta’s life? Because of such a busy schedule, I try to begin my day with some yoga with my Guru to relax my mind. I head to my factory in Noida post breakfast to meet and strategize with my design team. I like to sketch at quieter hours of the day. My designs are an expression of my thoughts. My mind never takes time off, It is restless or overactive most of the time which keeps me on my toes through the day. I like to wind up the day with a few close friends at home. What attracted you to begin your career as a designer? I’ve always been a creative person since I was a child and drawn to different art forms and sculptures. Upon graduation from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, I was instantly recognised as ‘Future of Couture’ by Altaroma Altamoda. This served as a clear sign toward the direction I would be taking to emerge, ten years later, as one of the strongest voices in couture and fashion from India. It is a very exciting time for our brand with the launch of our largest couture store in Mehrauli and a renewed focus on menswear with GG Man and GG Groom. How would your best friend describe you as a person? They know that I’m always striving for perfection. My mind never takes time off and I seek to constantly learn and evolve as a person. You’re quite a social activist yourself. Care to elaborate about the same? I feel very strongly for the environment. I’ve consciously initiated efforts against pollution and began with the “Anti-Pollution Riot” Campaign, where we brought in awareness through events, Promotions and Press. We designed t-shirts and pollution masks to signify its importance. We are slowly moving towards using fruit-plastic in our factory which is recyclable We are also a part of the Zero Wastage Initiative where we recycle left over scrap material to construct a unique blend of fabric.

SPECIAL

It’s that time of the year again when expressions of affection and love fill the air. As we delve into the Valentine’s month, it brings along with it an imminent arrival of all things red and pink, flowers, chocolate boxes, champagne, an overdose of heart-eye emojis and the usual. Although, with a change in the times each year, people’s approach towards this day has also changed, some having a more adventurous plan for the day, like wanting to try a sport that gives them an adrenaline boost; some wanting a tranquil getaway for spiritual purposes; signing up for fun, quirky classes together; or just spending the day with people in desperate need of some love, like old age homes or orphanages or pet homes. Valentine’s Day is all about spreading love and a day when you can take your relationship and turn it into something special. If you’re not in a relationship, then spend your time with your close friends and do something special for them. After all, there is no love purer than friendship. Valentine’s Day is historically celebrated in the name of a certain mysterious patron, Saint Valentine. There are a ton of legends surrounding who he was and how this day came to be, but boy, are we glad that it somehow came into existence! We always read books and watch movies about true love and its saga, but this time we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite real life couples, their real love stories, plans for Valentine’s Day and the real success to having great camaraderie in your relationships, right here in this issue. These are warm and fuzzy stories to satisfy your heart. - By Jessica David 30 FEBRUARY, 2019 TULIP

Rashed and Sharon met at a common friend’s Sangeet ceremony. Since the ceremonies in Indian weddings last at least three days, they had enough time to know each other, although only formally. Post the wedding, they decided to keep in touch through text messages and emails. A month of texting and chatting later, they happened to coincidentally meet again at a social gathering. It was something that kept bringing them together.

SPECIAL Rashed Khan & Inayah Sharon Aamir

They spoke about everything under the sun, leaving no topic untouched; all within a span of two hours. They both liked similar genres of music and together they criticized everything from pure logic to ethics, politics, literature and even science. Their wavelengths matched instantly and Sharon knew then that this friendship would be something very special. Rashed later took the opportunity to invite her over for his elder brother’s birthday gathering at his house. It was a small get-together of family members and close friends. Sharon was then introduced to the entire family and they bonded over dinner. Since she was working as a corporate anchor, she had to travel frequently across India and conduct events as she was a complete workaholic. Rashed was also busy planning on opening a chain of restaurants in Hyderabad. Life came in the way and they both got super busy in their own lives but stayed in touch over the phone. Little did they know that fate would again bring them together, this time tied in a wedding knot. Sharon was on a two month long family visit to meet her brother in New Zealand. This prevented her from being in constant touch with Rashed via phone or emails. That was when they realised how emotionally attached they were. It became mandatory to continually update each other. So, Long distance actually brought them closer. Once she got back from New Zealand, they decided to get engaged and then got married within a year! On any usual Valentine’s Day, they used to go for a quiet dinner and spend quality time together. This year they decided to go camping near Hyderabad. Nallamalai Forest is almost 232 kms away and is one of the most popular jungle camping sites near Hyderabad. Since Rashed and Sharon are nature & wild life enthusiasts, it is an ideal way to spend the Valentine’s Day. Nallamalai Forest offers a perfect mix of rejuvenating experience as well as thrill and fun. They are looking forward to bird watching, wildlife spotting, guided nature walks and trekking. The most exciting part for them is spending time together in the jungle camp. TULIP - FEBRUARY, 2019 31

SPECIAL Rasika and Lavraj Bhalerao Theirs was an arranged marriage where they met via relatives, but it was crush at first sight for Lavraj as Rasika is extremely pretty. Love eventually followed. According to him, Rasika is the most genuine, frank and honest person ever, and that coupled with her gorgeousness was like a cherry on the top for him. He couldn’t have gotten luckier. Her low maintenance, non-materialistic way of life with the knack of adjusting to every scenario still blows him away, literally. The birth of their son Rajveer was one of the greatest high points of their life, he points out. Nothing compares to that. This Valentine’s Day, both of them plan on indulging in the small simple pleasures of life and attempt to cook something new and totally out of the blue and then head for a long drive to revel in each other’s presence. Lavraj thinks they’ve grown out of the gift phase and are not too big on celebratory events. Rasika feels that Lavraj is one person who is generous and kind-hearted, something he gets from his mother and whose presence constantly makes her feel loved and adored. There isn’t another soul who can do that to her, without actually doing anything at all. She doesn’t need anything more in life. The way he has fathered their son and proven over the years what an amazing man he is, is something that she is eternally grateful for.

Tina Bajaj and DJ Piyush

SPECIAL

Being married to a DJ isn’t easy; it takes a strong and confident woman to fill the position, Tina jokes. Piyush and Tina have had solid history (and chemistry). They have known each other for the past 22 years. Like most friendships, they were friends first before he discovered he had feelings for her, although she reckons he always had feelings for her to start with. Initially, all she ever saw him as was her brother’s best friend. He came from a different cultural and religious background as he was a Punjabi and she was a Christian. As her family was settled in Bahrain for 25 years, the geographic distance and many other factors didn’t quite put him on her eligibility radar. But what’s meant to be, will always find a way, no matter what. In Dec 1999, he confessed that he liked her. At that point, she thought it was super weird, but eventually she reciprocated his feelings. Makes her smile even today to think of all the subtle ways in which he made his feelings known. It took a bit of convincing for either side of the families to be okay with their relationship, but they never gave up on each other. She thanks God every day that he didn’t give up, because she wouldn’t have any other man to have and to hold, other than Piyush. After all, she got her greatest, most precious gift from him (and God of course); their amazing son Yohaan, who they are absolutely obsessed with!

SPECIAL Shikha Jain Ajmera and Puneet Ajmera They met in Kovalam at a friend’s wedding; the guy was Puneet’s friend and the girl was Shikha’s. They saw each other at the after-party of the Sangeet and just kept stealing away glances. They didn’t gather the courage to even talk but just looked and smiled. They saw each other the next morning again, but just smiled and walked past each other. Post the wedding that night they finally gathered the guts and spoke to each other. In order to spend some time with each other, they somehow managed to get away from the crowd and chilled by the beach till they saw the sunrise together. And then after they reached their respective destination, they were in touch for 2-3 months and spoke but never met. And then they stopped talking. And then one night Shikha got a drunk call and he said ‘Kahan gayab ho madam’ (Where did you disappear?) and she said ‘Yahin pe’ (I’m right here) He said he would be back home and then talk to her. It was that day and today and they never stopped talking to each other. It wasn’t a long time since they had known each other, but they decided they wanted nothing more than to be with each other. It is funny how love works in our lives. 6 months down the line and their families knew about them and their plans and they agreed, with a little drama of course! It wasn’t love at first sight, but the amazing eye contact they shared, made them connected somewhere deep down. Her innocence that he saw in her eyes as he was walking down to the wedding and that beautiful smile stole Puneet’s heart. It was a crazy night when they met. All he wanted was her complete attention and would do anything to steal her away even for a moment. He would always cherish, adore and remember the morning when they watched the sunset together. It was what sealed something in their relationship. She fondly remembers how the texts and calls filled her with happiness and a small act of liking pictures on social media made her blush red! Their journey started from nowhere to finding eternal bliss. Amidst a bunch of people, she saw him but never had she imagined that her life would turn around. She can share her heart out with him and he’s the best thing that ever happened to her in the shortest span of time!

Manvi Mathur and Anubhav Mathur

SPECIAL

How they met. – It’s hard to believe, considering the great chemistry they share, but they actually had an arranged marriage. They knew each other before, but it wasn’t their idea to get married. But somehow their parents saw them and had the idea that they’d be perfect for each other and boy they were right! They walked into the typical arranged marriage process kicking, screaming and complaining like every other young guy and girl, not willing to get married. But on their first date, they ended up speaking for almost 8 hours straight. They spoke about everything in each of their lives and found they had so much in common. Their thoughts, their ideas, their goals in life, everything aligned. It just felt right. That very first day, they knew they were perfect for each other. They got engaged two weeks later and then married two years later. They celebrated their first anniversary this December, vacationing in Hawaii. Looking back they are happy that the biggest question of their lives - who they will end up with - had such a simple and perfect answer to it. Of course, both of their parents now leave no opportunity to quip - “See beta, we told you so!” Some of the best memories they share are of their long conversations on Skype during their courtship period. Also, their mutual love for travel has led them to explore a lot of places. So, every trip they take is a great memory and they will probably be making some more memories, travelling to someplace new on Valentine’s Day this year.

SPECIAL Shubha Dharmana & Anshul Chodha She was new in town and new in the country. After living most of her life in the UK, the last 11 years to be precise, she had relocated to India in Hyderabad where she set up her skin and hair clinic. Shubha remained single for several years, only in want of meeting someone for whom she had set very high standards. The meeting with her knight in shining armour that she had given up dreaming about happened from a chance meeting at her clinic when he turned up with his client and friend who was also her client. He seemed both wild and interesting at first glance. His long wild flowing locks, red eyes told me he loved late nights and partying. He seemed very comfortable in her presence and most importantly she felt completely safe and comfortable. They connected instantly and discovered common interest and friends even though he was a Punjabi-raised-Bangalorean. They decided to step out and she took him to a handicraft fair nearby as he was an architect and interior designer and she wanted to show him the best that Hyderabad had to offer. He bought a few paintings from an artist which he gifted her to her surprise! They kept in touch and met couple more times in Bangalore and then in Goa. They made time to meet each other through their busy schedules in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

They were in a dilemma as to how this relationship would work since he had his office in Bangalore and she had her clinic in Hyderabad. Although he said he would relocate for me eventually she decided to shift for him considering the very short time her business had in Hyderabad compared to his. Although initially over the phone he made it clear to me he will not commit so quickly until he knew me well, it took her by surprise that on the very next date he introduced her to his parents. Within a few months they decided they had the perfect relationship and so she moved into his flat in Bangalore trying to look to establish a clinic in the city. Their time together in Bangalore was the best where they hung out every single day at all the night clubs he had designed, getting to know each other, cooking and caring for each other. It was as if they had all the time for each other. Dating truly is one of the best times to enjoy your relationship. When they got married they still had all the time for each other. Every second day would be a lunch date that they would make time for from their busy schedules.

Although extremely challenging and tough now after having a child who needs their time more than anything and having grown their businesses, they struggle to find time for lunch dates. But they have decided to regularly take breaks from work every few weeks to rediscover each other. They have a great relationship that seeks to respect the other. A relationship that is loving, caring and where they share a lot of hobbies together. They both love taking care of themselves and often work out together and eat healthy meals. Although they don’t see much of each other during the day and they both travel quite frequently on work, the time they have together when they workout or when they are sharing responsibilities is truly precious. They also look forward to holidays where they spend time with each other and take breaks regularly so they can be with each other.

COVERSTORY

I want a boy like Lord Ram. I am yet to find that man.

On Love, Laughter & Living the dream 42 FEBRUARY, 2019 TULIP

Nidhhi Agerwal

How has your foray into the Telugu Industry been? Are you comfortable speaking the language? I’m not from a Telugu background but I was born in Hyderabad. So I feel maybe somewhere I’ve always had that connection with the language. When I first joined the industry, I didn’t know a word of Telugu. But now, I understand it pretty well so dialogues are not a problem at all. I still cannot speak Telugu fluently but I’m sure with time I will learn to. If you had to choose one film industry, would you choose Bollywood or Tollywood? It really is not about the industry for me. The film making process everywhere is pretty much the same- you shoot, you promote, the film comes out. But yes the vibe from each set, the outcome of the movie etc are very different. As I said, it is not the industry but the script that matters more, to me. So, I can’t really choose between Bollywood and Tollywood. They are both really close to my heart. How was working with Tiger Shroff different from working with AkhilAkkineni? With Tiger, I shot a dance-based film so there was a lot of dancing that we needed to do together. That was very difficult for me because you know Tiger is always in the air, he’s not ever walking (laughs). Because it was my first film and I knew absolutely nothing, Tiger has been really helpful and supportive by answering all my questions. With Akhil, it’s been great. I haven’t done a love story before Mr.Majnu and wasn’t sure how it was going to be. But I actually was very comfortable. So yeah, I can say that I’m very lucky to have worked with these two actors who have been so helpful and supportive throughout. This is your second Telugu film, have you signed on any more movies in the upcoming future? I’ve started shooting for one more movie with Puri sir. It is going to be out this month. There are a couple of others as well. I don’t know what I’m even doing because right now I’m very much in Mr.Majnu mode. It’s going to take me 4-5 days to get out of it. So maybe once I’m out of that mode, I can decide. Right now I’m not able to and don’t want to think of anything else.

COVER STORY

What is your motto in life? I am a very ambitious person. I have a lot of aims and goals that I want to achieve. From the time I was a kid, say 3-4 years old, I’ve always known that I want to be an actor. Its crazy that it’s actually happened, which is why I make sure I work to my full capacity. I want to keep working and keep doing better. You cannot control what happens to you but there is one thing I aim at and that is to work better every day and to get better with every film. I am the happiest person if someone tells me my acting was better than my last film. That is my way of comparing, analysing and reviewing myself. Having achieved so much at a young age, are there any tips you’d like to give upcoming actors? Oh God, upcoming actors- it’s a tough phase and tough place to be in. I would say just keep working on yourself; don’t wait for things to happen. Just keep working and giving your best and things will automatically come to you. But if you don’t and are just sitting and waiting for things to happen, nothing is really going to happen at all. So, work and keep working. Are you happy about not winning the Miss India pageant since it leads you to becoming an actress? This is a controversial one (laughs). I think in your life things happen for a reason and get you to where you are. At that point in time maybe I wanted to win the pageant but honestly, I’ve always wanted to be an actor. It made me realise that winning the pageant did not work out in my favour because that is not who I am or aim to be. Being the pageant girl was never my aim because I am not comfortable walking a certain way, laughing a certain way and sitting a certain way. In fact, if you want to become an actor, those are the things that hold you back. To become an actor, you have to be versatile and need to let go of certain habits. So, yes, whatever happens is for the best and I’m glad it worked out this way for me.

How do you manage to stay fit? Is there anything you swear by? I go to the gym, that’s the only thing I swear by. I feel very lazy about going to the gym but once I reach, I love being in the gym. It is a very important part of my day and I try not to miss my workouts for anything in the world. Once I’m done, I feel so much better. Not just my body but also my mind feels less stressed and relaxed. I have a gr4eat trained and we do a lot of exercises together. I also like eating healthy and I have just one junk item every week. I just had biryani last night and believe that I can eat anything as long as I’m working out the next day. Do you have any special plans for Valentine’s Day? Aaaa, that’s a very tricky question! Let me quote myself from my film, “Naaku Ramudu laanti vyakti kavali- I want a boy like Lord Ram”. So yes, I am yet to find that man and once that happens I will start planning for Valentine’s Day. How is a typical day like in NidhhiAgerwal’s life? Ohhhaha. So when I’m shooting, my day is all about the shoot. I don’t think of anything else. When I’m not shooting, I work out at the gym a lot for say 2 hours as gym is an important part of my routine. Then I have my dance class which takes away another hour and a half. Other than this, I have a lot of meetings to catch up on work. I also make sure to stay busy by either learning a skill or doing an acting workshop. At least 1/3rd of my day needs to be productive. I’m very particular about my routine.

BREAKFAST (5:00 AM- 11:30 AM)

Ram Ki Bandi This Dosa point is recommended not only by us but also by thousands of people other neighbouring states too. The dosa is folded and chopped like a Quesadilla. The coconut chutney was perfectly creamy with a hint of spice. You don’t have to be a Vegetarian to appreciate all the amazing flavours packed into these dosas. They also provide Butter Idly but only a few people like to eat them. The Cheese Dosa and the Masala Dosa are our absolute favourites. The place opens at 5 am and shits at 8 am, thus making it a to-go spot for early birds as well as night owls. Where: Opp. Karachi Bakery, Mozamjahi Market, Nampally. Contact: 099639 68082

Aura Cafe Aura Cafe is hidden in one of the quietest alleys in Jubilee Hills. Once you reach the place, locating it is slightly confusing as you might find a grocery store instead of a café but hidden from view at the entrance is a sizeable café extending from the store with seating areas inside as well as outside. The restaurant is warm and well-lit. For breakfast, they have both English and American breakfast with a variety of eggs cooked and served in numerous ways, pancakes, waffles, museli and freshly baked breads. Our favourite is the ‘Shakshuka’, a middle Eastern scrambled egg dish served with mixed peppers, tomatoes, parsley and pita bread. The style in which this dish was served was a treat to the eyes. They also have waffles with chocolate ice cream and peanut butter that are tasty but have room for improvement. For a filling breakfast and unique serving style, Aura is your new destination. LUNCH (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM) Little Italy This place is the pioneer of the concept of Italian vegetarian fine dining in India. Little Italy has been a go-to place for everyone in Hyderabad ever since its inception specializing in wood-fired pizzas and fresh handmade pastas. They have recently introduced a new contemporary menu which takes a modern take on traditional Italian recipes and recreates the dishes, with an all-new dessert menu yet to launch there are many surprises yet in store for guests visiting little Italy. It is a vegetarians paradise and probably one of the few places one can eat veg food without complaints. Their ‘Pappa Di Pomodoro’ soup made with roasted tomatoes and bell peppers and the ‘Pale Di Potato’ served with garlic mayonnaise sauce along with the ‘Jalapeno Salsa’ are our favourites among starters. For the main course, we pick the ‘Rigatoni Finnochio’ pasta made with truffle porcini cream, roasted fennel, saffron and pine nuts. Their ‘Lasagne Alle Verdure’ is also a must try. The ‘Chocolate Bomb’, a molten lava cake made served with vanilla ice-cream is the most loved by all for dessert. Where: Film Nagar and Hi-tec City Contact: 040 23558001/ 040 39999500

Located in the hubbub of Jubilee Hills, this place is one of our favourite places for a quiet lunch or dinner date. It has a lovely ambience with plenty of outdoor seating and its Greek-inspired decor gives a very vintage feel. The most interesting part of this cafe is its ability to play underground music- a feature appreciated by many international artists. The food at Lé Vantage is vast with a lot of variety to choose from. From tea, coffee and soda to soups, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, pastas, veg/nonveg starters, main course and soft/ hard drinks, they have it all! The Arab Villagio Restaurant has quickly built a reputation as one of the best new Lebanese restaurants in the town and deservedly so. More than a place to eat, it combines food, design and music making the dining experience a cultural one too. AUTOMOBILES

The Swanky Sedan The Jaguar XE with one of a kind aesthetics and exhaust note, superlative brakes, engine and gearbox, impeccable ride and handling balance, feature loaded interiors and sports car aura around it makes it a special car to live with. It’s the ideal choice for enthusiasts in India who are looking for old school fun yet it’s luxurious enough to keep all kind of customers and owners happy. Exterior : Exterior design is tastefully mastered by Jaguar- the long hood, the stubby and substantial rear with a side profile which is long enough to depict that it is a luxury saloon. The chunky tail-lamps look edgy and are straight from the stunning F-Type. The headlights in particular, sit cocooned below the bonnet and have dual barrel approach to the LED lights along with DRLs which definitely make the XE stand out. Interior : Soft touch materials in major areas add to the feel good factor. The tan colour along with black colour on offer makes it stand out in the category where we see the use of beige or pure black. Features list is pretty big and that is what sets it apart from rivals. There are steering mounted controls, sunroof, cruise control, dual zone climate control, 360 degree camera, fully electric mirrors, auto-dimming and heated ORVM and IRVM, HID lights, rear A/C vents. There is also an 8-inch touch screen on offer which displays all the options as quick to respond to demands. There is navigation, AUX, USB, Bluetooth and SD card option which is used to display navigation and not music. A Meridian sound system on offer is superb all the way in terms of sound quality. There are enough 12V sockets in the car. Leather seats are offered on all variants, lockable glovebox, engine start-stop, keyless entry and much more is on offer. Safety kit includes 8 airbags; ESC, ABS, EBD, and All Surface Progress Control (ASPC). Ergonomics are spot on and seems to have been derived from the sports cars of the world. Low seating position, near excellent visibility all around with fabulous seats make it a joy to spend time in the car. Space in the rear and boot space is just about adequate. Engine and gearbox : When it comes to performance, Jaguar excels. The 2.0l fourcylinder motor makes 240 PS of power and 340 Nm of torque. The driveability in the city is manageable, but not excellent as there is turbo lag under 3000 RPM. Speeds like 200 km/hr are easily attainable

on open roads. Power to weight ratio is intense! Engine is a very lively unit and isn’t out-rightly linear or boring like other units seen in its rivals. There are four driving modes which include Dynamic, Normal, Eco and Winter. The button on the left stalk controls which display you get to choose in various modes. Torque Vectoring, All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) keeps things in check with the car when the going gets unfriendly and fast. Gearbox is an 8-speed unit which shifts up and down fast enough and in the sports mode it is even quicker. There are paddle shifters as well and they come into action the moment you double tap them. That engages manual mode but it shifts at redline for you. While in sports mode for the gearbox, you have to shift up on your own. Top speed is 250 km/hr and it does 0-100 km.hr in 6.8 seconds. Ride and Handling : The XE has a completely brilliant setup for ride and handling on our roads. The car corners flat, the steering is super quick, although it lacks feedback by subtle margin. Ride quality is very good at any given speed, which is great. The agility in the corners thanks to the lightness makes things even better. This is due to a very sophisticated setup of suspension which is a link unit not a strut unit seen on its rivals, especially seen in the 3-Series. Brakes are brilliant with good bite and enough progressive power to stop even at its top-speed right on time. Price and competition : The prices for the Pure, Prestige and Portfolio variants are Rs 37.25 lakh, Rs 41.04 lakh and Rs 45.34 lakh respectively. The Jaguar XE competes with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 and the Volvo S60. Address: Odyssey Mall, Plot no. 461, Road no. 36, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. Ph: 090143 00900

Kolkata - The City of Joy - By Satpreet Kaur

Kolkata, the first capital of British India is a place where you can still breathe the bygone era vividly. The architecture, people, street food, cabins (now known as cafes), museums and Bazaars, clearly show how you can find beauty even amidst chaos. - By Satpreet Kaur Where to stay: Calcutta Bungalow When in Calcutta, we wanted to explore the part of city that gives us a closer taste of the city’s heritage. Calcutta Bungalow is a 90-year-old Majumdar bari (townhouse), restored into a six-room bed & breakfast that opened its doors just last year. Every corner of this three storied building has a story to tell, so much that you wouldn’t want to step out. Away from the maddening chaos of the city, this is a perfect place to stay, that offers an old-world charm along with urban amenities to make your stay a comfortable one. All six rooms are named after old neighborhoods like Sahibpara, Darzipara, Mochipara, Potuapara (artists’ colony), Boipara (about books and publishing), Dorjipara (tailors’ hub), Jatrapara (famous for traditional theatre). The rooms each dedicated to the surrounding area tell a tale. Just like the rest of the bungalow the rooms too are a perfect amalgamation of vintage and modern. They have modern day luxuries like air conditioning, television with Netflix, WiFi, an attached bathroom and a comfortable bed. The dining room, called Notunbazar (named after new market), a common meal space for guests has loudspeakers as ceiling lamps and books that any intellect would like to borrow. While the breakfast is included in the stay, you will have to inform them in advance for dinner order in. The staff is warm and helpful and lay down your meal for you if you wish to have it in common room, instead of your room. We love every roomincluding the open courtyards, little souvenir shop and not to forget the rooftop where you can experience a relaxing evening resting on armchairs and taking in the sights and sounds of the old Calcutta neighborhood with chai in hand. We loved the neon signage saying ‘Baro masheteroparbon’. They even have an emerald green Ambassador right at the entrance that you can opt for a short city tour. Celebrating Anniversary of Success ! Deepika and Ranveer celebrated the completion of Padmaavat in their own unique way. Exactly a year ago, on January 25, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s epic movie Padmaavat released after facing controversies for more than a month. The film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was among the biggest hits of 2018. To celebrate the film completing one year, Deepika and Ranveer came up with rather quirky videos. Deepika shared an Instagram story of her on a seesaw and captioned: “Celebrating one year of Padmaavat like!!” She also shared a picture from the shoot of the film, and asked viewers to guess the scene. Meanwhile, Ranveer continued with his musical avatar by sharing a throwback video clip from the shoot of Padmaavat in his Khilji avatar lip syncing to 2016’s hit song Makeba by Miriam Makeba, a South African singer and activist. Sharing the post, Ranveer wrote: “ CHILL-JI #throwback #khilji#1year of padmaavat #makeba @jainmusic” Padmaavat, the retelling of the story of legendary Rajput queen Padmavati of Chittor, ran into trouble when a Rajput group, KarniSena, took offence, to what they called a distortion of history. The film, however, went on to make an estimated Rs 585 crore in worldwide collection. Ranveer and Deepika remain busy as ever.

Is there love in the air ?

The Eldest Kardashians star was seen stepping out with a mystery new man in Malibu. The 39-year-old reality star has recently confessed to wanting to ‘be in love again’ and with that, she has been spotted stepping out with a mystery ‘handsome hunk’, that has started tongues wagging in Hollywood. Kourtney has been single since August last year, when she called time on her relationship with boyfriend Younes Bendjima, 26, and has since been seen with Luka. Reports in US media suggest that relationship is purely platonic. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star has had only brief flirtations since she split from Scott Disick in 2015, most notably with 21-year-old model Luka Sabbat but now it looks like she may have found a new man. Hitting Malibu hot spot Nobu, Kourtney is all smiles as she leaves the sushi restaurant with the mystery guy, who has been tentatively named by Hollywood Life as Dakota Duron. This wouldn’t be a stretch in possibility as he already has links to the Kardashian family, being the brother-in-law of Rich Wilkerson Jr, who was the pastor that officiated Kourtney’s sister Kim and Kanye West’s wedding, back in 2014. 70 FEBRUARY, 2019 TULIP

Doesn’t this make you believe in True love??

The City lights star Patralekha shared her love story with Rajkummar Rao on ‘Humans of Bombay’ on Instagram which will make you go Awwww! “I saw him for the first time in LSD. I thought the weird guy he played was actually what he was like. My perception of him was tarnished! He told me later, that he first saw me in an ad & thought, ‘I’m going to marry her.’ It was so ironic! Once we began working together–it was magic. The kind of passion he had was powerful & I couldn’t respect him any more than I did then! We spoke about our work, love for cinema, passions… I saw him through his struggles, never giving up. How could we not fall for each other? We didn’t officially go on dates, but we’d go for drives, movies, or just sit at home. We accompanied each other for auditions, just for support. All we needed was that understanding. He’d often go out of his way for me. Once he was late to see me, so he ran all the way from the airport to Juhu! Not only that, but when we weren’t earning much, he gifted me my favorite bag–it was so expensive!Y ears later, someone stole it in London! I called him sobbing–for me, it was about the memories. He’d bought it for me when he didn’t have much. Later, at our hotel, the exact same bag was waiting for me. These little things make me realise how lucky I am to have him. And the best part is, he always says he’s the lucky one. Isn’t that what a relationship needs? To remind each other how grateful we are? He told me once that after I met his mom, she said, ‘I have a feeling she’s the last one I’m meeting.’

So... when’s the housewarming party? Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin reportedly have been dating since July of 2018.While Sprouse might be famous as the erstwhile star of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and as one-half of a very famous twin brother duo as well as the owner-operator of the Brooklyn-based meadery All-Wise Palvin is likely less recognizable outside of fashion circles. But the 24-year-old Hungarian model has a cool 8.4 million followers who keep up with her every move.Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin are movin’ on up literally! Barbara Palvin and Dylan Sprouse have taken their relationship to new heights. On Friday, They both moved into a Brooklyn, New York apartment together. “We moved in we only had 4 mental breakdowns!” Sprouse captioned a photo, which shows himself and his model love posing for a selfie in their new pad, which boasts an impressive view of the New York City skyline. Sprouse and Palvin have been dating for a little under a year. The duo first sparked romance rumors last summer when they began leaving flirty comments on each other’s social media accounts and later attended a film screening together. In November, Dylan won the award for best boyfriend when he handdelivered fast food to Barbara after she walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The “WINK GIRL” winks again.

Remember the girl Priya Prakash Varrier, who became famous instantly nation wide with the music video of her debut Malayalam film? She is also popularly known as the wink girl, after a song clip from her Malayalam film, OruAdaar Love became famous and even many superstars tweeted about this particular song. Being a super starlet here in Tollywood is almost equal to a pan Indian star now. And it looks like a great opportunity knocked her door from Tollywood .Though many makers earlier approached Priya with offers, she has shocked the likes of DilRaju by quoting nearly 2 crores for a film. Finally, she seems to have understood the reality and then, we hear that director Vikram K Kumar has now asked her to come for a screen test. For Vikram’s next film that features Nani in the lead, a couple of heroines will be cast in the lead actress roles. We hear that both Nani and Vikram have decided to bring in Priya Prakash Varrier just in case if the actress rocks the screen test and the audition as well. So, if all works out, this will be the debut film of Priya in Telugu!!

ENTERTAINMENT Here goes PRABHAS’S Condition……!

If you are one among those anticipators waiting for an update about the film, here it is. Other day, a leading producer of Tollywood is said to have met Prabhas and then offered to do a film with him. But the actor said a firm ‘NO.’ After ‘Baahubali’, the range, craze and box office power of Prabhas has multiplied many times. Now that he is coming up with ‘Saaho’, which is produced by his own banner ‘UV Creations’ (which runs on the name of his friend and cousin), the craze for that film shows his true commercial power. And then, his next film to that is also produced by the same banner. We hear that whatever banner offers a film to Prabhas, should now work with UV Creations on a share basis. This is more like Salman Khan who puts the condition that every film of his will have ‘Salman Khan Films’ banner associated with it. While the profits will be shared on a ratio basis, actors seeking a share in the whole film, can do do only if they are a truly big star. Chiranjeevi and Mahesh Babu also follow a similar trend. Seems like Prabhas is also treading along the same path. And also The latest report is that choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant has been roped in as the choreographer for the film. The most interesting things are that international dancers Laurent and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois, who are identical twins will make the actors dance for their steps.

WORLD CUP 2019 Indian Squad Revelation The ICC World Cup is just 4 months away and the Indian selectors have begun thinking about their 15-man squad for the tournament. While it can be said that most of the spots have been occupied, there are many players in the race for a few slots in the squad. Also, a lot of experts have made their predictions for the Indian squad for the World Cup and Gambhir too joined the fray. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has named his Indian squad for the 2019 ICC World Cup. The Delhi-born batsman’s team looks pretty settled but it has a couple of surprises as well. Gambhir has surprisingly picked Ravichandran Ashwin in his squad. At the same time, he has not considered left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja and young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant for the World Cup. During a recent media interaction in Bengaluru, Gambhir reckoned, “Both wrist-spinners (KuldeepYadav and Yuzvendra Chahal) have done well in the last one year. But I still feel that R Ashwin is somebody we should look at. I’ve always believed that a quality spinner is a quality spinner, irrespective of whether he is a wrist-spinner or a finger-spinner. ”Gambhir decided to exclude Rishabh Pant from the squad as he had already picked 2 wicket-keepers - MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik for the World Cup. Gambhir’s World Cup Squad includes Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

VIRAT’S Shocking transformation over 10 years!

IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore in a recent tweet has shared a picture of Virat Kohli from 2009 and 2019 to present the stark difference in his looks in the past decade. Joining the bandwagon of the #10years challenge, Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore shared a picture of their skipper Virat Kohli on Twitter showing his unbelievable transformation over the years. Kohli made his international debut for India in 2008 and completed a decade in international cricket last year. Not only has his game changed over the years, but the Indian skipper has made a conscious effort to change his looks as well. In the tweet shared by RCB, they have highlighted how stronger, bolder the Indian skipper has grown over the years. Both in IPL for his franchise and international cricket for India, Kohli has been India’s mainstay with the bat. Captaincy also seems to have brought out the best in him. The tougher the challenges, the better Kohli performs with the bat. He has been vital to many memorable victories for India over the years. One of the few international batsmen with an unmatched consistency; Kohli’s record with the bat speaks for himself. TULIP - FEBRUARY, 2019 71

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Zero Perhaps one of the few movies Katrina Kaif has acted really well in, Zero is the story of an 38 year old short statured man, Buaa Singh played by Shahrukh Khan who has difficulty in finding a marriage partner. He blames his father for his short height and splurges money. He meets Aafia Bhinder, an NSAR Scientist who suffers from cerebral palsy (played by Anushka Sharma) and finds a companion in her. Their wedding gets fixed in a jiffy and this guy is unable to take it all in. He dreams of marrying Babita Kumari (played by Katrina Kaif) who is a film superstar and runs away from his wedding leaving Aafia heart broken. Buaa then somehow reaches Babita and she lets him stay with her due to weird reasons. She is often seen drunk and crying over her ex boyfriend, a moviestar who deserted her for another actress. It then takes a turn and Buaa Singh realizes his true love and way to live his life to the fullest. There is also a point where he goes to Mars (The planet, yes. Weird, yes). I found myself wanting to walk out of the theatre a number of times in the later half. No offense. All in all, this movie will be loved by Katrina’s fans as she has upped her acting skills and it shows, or if you’re a Shahrukh Khan fan. Do not go otherwise. I wouldn’t suggest.

Glass Revolving around its three anti-heroes (Glass, the beast and Bruce Willis as the ‘unbreakable’ David Dunn), M Night Shyamalan’s cleverly crafted thriller shatters the glass ceiling in its respective genre. To cut to the chase, Glass is terrific but has its share of underwhelming moments. However, if you are the type who likes the journey regardless of the destination, Glass is your film. It convinces you to decode its relevant theory — faith vs logic, who wins?

F2 Having Venkatesh, Varun Tej, Tammanna and Mehreen kaur in the lead, F2 is a family comedy film. It thoroughly entertains you and you leave the hall fully satisfied. A delayed comeback but worth the wait, Venkatesh acts brilliantly and the humor is well written keeping in mind of the span of audience it needs to reach being a family movie. As a usual telugu film, the climax is sentimental and forces you to shed a tear or two (Only if you’re a fan of telugu movies). I enjoyed the first half thoroughly but the second half gets a little bit boring and dragged.

BOOKS A Man Called Ove- Fredrick Backman

Many of you must be thinking that it’s a misprint and it must be ‘Ove’. But no, you read it right. Some books leave you with a mark, they linger around your head with a positive feeling all your life. This is one of those books. It will make you laugh a lot, cry and sometimes both. It is about a man called Ove and he takes you on his journey from childhood to old age. He is an elderly man who has lost his wife and always remains annoyed and irritated with the either his neighbors or streetwalkers, or for that instance, everyone around him. In the beginning, you’ll often get infuriated as to why he acts the way he does. But as you continue reading it, you’ll understand why he is that kind of a person and you’ll not be able to unsee it. This book takes you on a ride to learn unknown things about love, second chances, and all the good things in the world. More than anything, it’ll move you from the inside. More than the story, the essence of it is what will stay with you.

The Trouble With Poetry

- Billy Collins One of my personal favorites, this is a must-read. It’s a book with over 40 poems under 4 parts. The very first poem will bring a smile on your face and is dedicated to its readers. You do not need to be a poet or a person with great knowledge about poems to read this collection. It is written in simple words for everyone to understand the fact that poems need not be obscure or incomprehensible and that perhaps that’s the trouble with some serious poetry. It takes you to a world of simple joy, humor and sometimes sadness, but that is a part and parcel of life, isn’t it? Billy Collins is bound to charm you with his choice of words and perceptions.

Haruki Murakami- Men without women

Moments of melancholy and humor mixed with acute observation, this book is a collection of seven tales about men, in different arenas of life, who often find themselves alone. Note the fact that every story ends in a comma, not a full stop; rather in a euphemistic sense. There is a woman who makes love to a man, starts telling a story and becomes the story herself, a man who is in love and is positively heartbroken, a man who does not know whether he is in love or not and other such men, yet each one’s story different from the others’. There are stories of men who want to hold women so dearly but are left with regret. Its an eye-opener and the same time, gives you a good feeling even after being lonely, if you are so. Loneliness will have never been felt so calming. All the men out there, this is the ultimate book for you!
