Salute the Real life soldiers who have always stood up for women
As part of a unique initiative by Gillette, men from Hyderabad and across the country were invited to come forward to be a Soldier for Women. For decades now, men across the nation have exhibited the values of camaraderie, courage, integrity, discipline, respect and standing up for women and this movement aims at bringing likeminded men together to imbibe these values, and be a solider for women. Traditions that make a marriage!
Indian marriages are extremely special and considered the best throughout the world. Indian weddings bring in loads of fun and happenings along with them. The whole environment of weddings is so beautiful that if someone who has the opportunity to witness an Indian wedding for the first time, would lose their heart seeing the grandeur of Indian Weddings. Komal Sirwani brings to you an exclusive insight into traditions from diverse cultures in India that are a part of Indian marriages. Every culture has its own set of traditions and ceremonies that make up a marriage. For example, a basic Hindu wedding starts with an engagement ceremony, followed by mehendi, sangeet, pheras and finally the reception. While a Punjabi wedding starts with the roka ceremony followed by maiya, wedding at Gurudwara and finally the reception. However, a muslim wedding would start with an engagement ceremony and nikaah along with other pre marital ceremonies. The beauty of India lies in its diverse cultures. A lot of secular citizens now choose theme based weddings where every function of the wedding is from a different culture, like a Punjabi style engagement, a Bengali haldi and mehandi ceremony and a nikaah or a church wedding in muslim or Christian styles. This shows how Indians, irrespective of their religion respect and appreciate other cultures. Tulip brings you the glimpses of some of the pre marital ceremonies of some cultures that makes a marriage meaningful. Islam Traditions
Istikhara, Imam-Zamin and Magni The first phase of the pre-wedding Muslim rituals is known as Istikhara, wherein the religious head takes the approval of the Almighty to perform the wedding. After the consent, the groom’s mother pays a visit to the bride’s house along with sweets and Imam-Zamin, a silver or gold coin wrapped in silken cloth. The custom of tying the coin onto the upper portion of the bride’s hand is called the Imam-Zamin ceremony. This is followed by Magni, which is a custom wherein the groom’s family pays a visit to the bride’s house and both the families exchange fruits and sweets.
Punjabi Tradition
Maiya A custom common to Sikh and Punjabi wedding ceremonies is maiya. In this function, all the ladies of the family and friends of the bride are invited, and each member makes the bride wear red and green bangles. This signifies the beginning of the traditions of marriage and the girl is not supposed to leave the house or remove the bangles until the day of her wedding. Chooda Ceremony : Bride’s maternal uncle or mama takes her for the chooda ceremony. She is made to wear a set of red and white ivory (since ivory is banned, bone or plastic are alternative) bangles that have been dipped in kachchi lassi or buttermilk. Kaleeren or golden metal danglers are tied to the bride’s wrist by her close female relatives. The bride now dresses up for the main ceremony 48 JUNE, 2013
South Indian Tradition
The wedding rituals begin with Panda Kaal Muhurtham, wherein the families of the bride and the groom pray to the Lord for an uninterrupted wedding. After this, the groom is welcomed with the traditional aarti by the bride’s side on the day before marriage. He is offered sweets, sprinkled with rose water and even a coconut is broken to ward off any evil. Next is Vratham, which is a small puja organized before marriage. Following this is Pallikai Thellichal ceremony, as per which grains are sprouted in earthen pots, which are later immersed in a pond to feed the fishes.

The next ritual is Naandi, in which Brahmins are given gifts and sweets to seek their blessings for the wedding alliance. Nichithardham is the formal engagement ceremony, wherein the bride and the groom exchange rings. After this, the Reading of Lagnapatrika takes place, which is the ceremony of formal announcing the alliance and reading out the wedding details (time, venue etc) to everybody.
Marwari Tradition
Janev In the Janev ritual, the bridegroom dresses up in saffron clothes. Before wearing the thread, he is asked to perform the havan. Wearing saffron colored clothes symbolizes that the groom is given two choice: either become an ascetic or take up the responsibility of a householder. After the completion of havan, the groom tries to escape from the institution of marriage, while his maternal uncle tries to persuade him to assume his responsibility. Palla Dastoor On the wedding day, or one day before it, some of the groom’s relatives bring the palla dastoor to the bride’s home. The palla dastoor encompasses clothes, jewelry and presents from the bridegroom. The bride wears this at the time of her wedding. Traditional poshak is usually red in color. However, it can also be in the colors of orange, gold yellow or pink. It sounds like Beyonce may get her wish, as E! News is confirming that the singer is pregnant with her second child. Rumors have been rampant that she was expecting a baby for weeks, with a recently cancelled concert only fueling speculation more. Now, multiple sources are confirming that Beyonce is pregnant with her second child with Jay-Z. Recently the singer told a source that she wanted to have more kids, and wished for her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, to experience being a big sister. Following the Met Gala, music industry insiders said Beyonce was expecting, but she still made no announcement. After her cancelled concert in Belgium, Beyonce wrote an apology note to her fans, which was posted on Facebook, noting that she was feeling better after missing the show and was ready to return to the stage. So far there has been no official confirmation from Beyonce’s camp regarding the pregnancy, or the effect it would have on her current tour. Scarlett Johansson is all set to don the director’s hat with the film adaptation of Truman Capote’s unpublished novel ‘Summer Crossing’. The movie will tell the story of a 17-yearold Protestant debutante, who begins an affair with a Jewish parking-lot attendant while her family vacations in Paris during the summer of 1945, Contact music reported. The 28-year-old actress is confident that the project, which is currently being pitched to potential investors at Cannes, will be a success. Johansson said in a statement that several years ago, she began working with the Capote estate and writer Tristine Skyler to adopt the book, which had long inspired and captured her heart. She added that being able to bring this story to the screen, as her full-length directorial debut is a dream and deep privilege.
Rihanna suing UK retail giant for $5m over image used without consent Rihanna is set to file a 5-milliondollar lawsuit against UK retail giant Topshop over alleged unauthorized use of her picture on their products. The 25-year-old singer was reportedly angry after finding out that the High Street Fashion chain had been selling women’s T-shirts printed with an image of her from her ‘We Found Love’ video and is apparently taking legal action after eight-months of negotiations with the firm - owned by billionaire Sir Philip Green. A source told the New York Post that the Barbadian artists’ asked Topshop many times to stop selling her image and were told, “We do what we want.” The source said that they offered her 5,000 dollars and said that they didn’t care. Rihanna has reportedly hired international lawyers Reed Smith to sue Topshop in London, the Sun reported. The t-shirts are only being sold in the UK - where the photographer owns the rights of the images. The source said that even though British laws don’t protect the artist’s interests, she has decided to move forward and sue Topshop and has spent almost 1 million dollars in litigation at this point.

So there is no beginning. There is a continuation. Based on the lines of Hollywood blockbusters like Kill Bill and Django Unchained, the untitled one-man-army film will be amongst Bollywood’s most ambitious project to be helmed by director Sanjay Gupta. If sources are to be believed, the makers promise to give it a similar status that Sunny Deol’s Ghayal had those days. The film will also see John pushing the envelope in the action space, with high adrenaline stunts without body doubles in signature Sanjay Gupta style. A source reveals ‘Sanjay Gupta joins hands with John Abraham for an epic revenge saga which is on the lines of a Bollywood Rambo. When dabbling with the script, the director could think of no one better than John to essay the role of the protagonist since he has the physique to carry off the character and is synonymous with “action”. While one is NTR-Harish Shankar’s film, the other two are Baabai-Abbai’s films. As per the film nagar sources, it’s learnt that director Harish Shankar is shooting some key scenes on NTR and Shruti Hassan for the film ‘Ramayya Vastavayya’ and the shooting will progress till 17th. Similarly a song on Pawan Kalyan and Samantha is being shot in RFC for the film ‘Attharintiki Daaredhi’. Soon after this song, few comedy scenes involving M S Narayana and Brahmanandam will take place in the same location. This schedule will also be wrapped up by May 17th. Similarly a few scenes related to bus travel are being shot on Ram Charan by director Vamsi Paidipally for Dil Raju’s production venture ‘Yevadu’. This film has Shruti Hassan and Amy Jackson as leading ladies. Apart from these films, shooting of Manchu Manoj’s ‘Potugadu’ is taking place at RFC. It’s a rare opportunity for the visitors of Ramoji Film City to see films of their matinee idols being shot at one location. But since RFC is open on all days, the shooting areas were kept free of any visitors with extra security.

David Beckham Retires From Football David Beckham, who starred for Manchester United, Real Madrid and England’s national team before heading to the United States and Paris, is retiring. The news was confirmed Thursday by England’s Football association. The midfielder played his first game for Manchester United in 1992 and eventually rose to become captain of England’s international team for more than 50 games, including several World Cup tournaments. He appeared in 115 matches for the squad. As he rose to international fame, Beckham also became a style icon and gained fame for his deadly ability to beat goaltenders on free kicks, a talent that even inspired a movie, Bend It Like Beckham “Despite the offer of an extended one-year deal at Paris Saint-German, the 38-year-old has played his last game, bowing out on a high after helping Carlo Ancelotti’s side win the French title for the first time in 19 years,” reports source. Before this season, Beckham spent six years with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, where he helped boost interest in the league. The team won two championships in Beckham’s final two seasons with the squad. “We’re never going to replace David Beckham,” Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena told the Los Angeles.

Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that he has won it seven out of the last eight years. The biggest obstacle in his way is likely Federer, who won the only French Open not won by Nadal since 2004. That year was 2009, which seems like ages ago for the Swiss star, who has only won three majors. Wimbledon twice, the Australian Open once, since that championship. That’s why the win is so crucial for Nadal. Even if he has to face the daunting Federer in the French Open final shortly, he can look back to this performance as an indicator of how dominant he is over Federer on clay courts.
After 27 years of giving the hairdryer treatment to English officials, you’d expect the Premier League’s referees to be glad to see the back of Sir Alex Ferguson. The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is a novel that automatically lent itself to style, revealing as the story does in the dazzle of 1920s America with its unabashed hedonism and moral decay. Director Luhrmann on cue has crafted his most resplendent film yet. Savored in 3D, the Roaring Twenties bring alive what heights cinema as a visual spectacle can scale. But there is another aspect to Fitzgerald’s novel. Lurking beneath all that jazz are the quieter, gloomier notes of angst, which really gave the novel its focus. Luhrmann’s thrust, going by this film, was never fully to explore the dark side. He may have catered a feast for the senses but he struggles with the emotional conflicts and the tragedy they bring in the wake. Fitzgerald drew from his own life to create the budding author Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who lands as neighbor to the extravagant young millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) on arrival in New York. He soon becomes a part of Gatsby’s world, and the lavish parties the man often throws. But as time passes, Nick starts spotting chinks in the happy picture. Emotions such as true love, loyalty and commitment seem to have little value in this world of excesses. A Jay-Z soundtrack would seem unlikely for a world imagined by Fitzgerald, but the rapper has moved away from typical sounds and it works well. A big draw at the global box-office has to be Leonardo DiCaprio. The star of the show straddles flawlessly Gatsby’s range from the powerful to the pathetic. Tobey Maguire by contrast is a suitably restrained spectator to all the drama. Carey Mulligan (playing Nick’s cousin and Gatsby’s lover Daisy) brings out the contradictions of her role well. Finally Amitabh Bachchan is seen in a one-scene cameo as Meyer Wolfsheim. He tells the world what we always knew: Big B is an actor who needs just that one scene. Aurangzeb Arjun Kapoor’s second outing in Bollywood - Aurangzeb - will see him in a double role. Aurangzeb is directed by debutant Atul Sabharwal. It has an ensemble cast including Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Deepti Naval, Amrita Singh and South actor Prithviraj. Jackie Shroff and Amrita Singh have been paired together after almost two decades. Pakistani singer and veteran actress Salma Agha’s daughter Sasha Agha also makes her Bollywood debut with the movie. This film, produced by the Yash Raj Films is rumored to be a fresh take on the 1978 blockbuster film Trishul. The plot is simple. Cops have forever been trying to nail Gurgaon real estate kingpin Yashvardhan (Jackie Shroff) without success. They just fail to get enough evidence against the man every time. Yashvardhan’s top gun is the dapper Ajay (Arjun), a gangster whose lust for power knows no bounds. Then, top cop Ravikant (Rishi Kapoor) unearths a secret about Yashvardhan and hits upon a plan. Ajay is captured and the cops plant his lookalike Vishal (Arjun in a double role) in his place, as an informer in Yashvardhan’s world.
Tadakha Tadakha is a remake of the hit Tamil movie ‘Vettai’ directed by Kishore Pardasany. It has Naga Chaitanya, Sunil, Tamannah and Andrea in the lead roles. Tadakha is a story of two brothers, Siva (Sunil) and Karthik (Chaitu) and their relationship. Tadakha is filled with all the action elements required to keep us entertained throughout the movie. Naga Chaitanya has done a good job in his action role. His performance was better than his previous performances. Sunil’s performance was impressive. The final moments of the film showed good performer in him. Tamannah and Andrea did their job and looked beautiful. Action scenes and the Screenplay were commendable.
