Working with Tulip has given me insight into the field of journalism. It is great to have people who can guide you and tell you how things are done in the real world. The office culture is chilled out and casual and the people are all super friendly. Coming to work is a joy.
Tulip is the company with which I started my career as a content writer. I am passionate about my writing and always wanted to work for a magazine to explore more in this field and tulip gave me the opportunity. As an amateur writer I did make a few mistakes but with the right support and guidance at Tulip I saw myself growing in such a small span of time. Apart from learning and exploring, I also overcame my fear of communication and got better with every step.

Crafting Customization by Having done her Masters, Ujwala started working for a design studio which deals in conversion of handmade paper to quality products apart from designing wedding cards. Her job profile included interacting with clients, understanding their requirement, suggesting ideas, taking care of various aspects from production to final delivery. She has always been passionate about cooking and thus deciding to quit her 15-year-old job, started Diletto which manufactures and retails chocolates, desserts, cakes and other baked products. Her experience of working with paper helped her to design the packaging for her chocolates and other products. Her ideas for packaging were much appreciated and got her a lot of recognition in addition to her chocolates. It gave a breath of fresh air to the existing packaging options available in the market. It was at a chance event when a close friend needed invitations for his party that she decided to make them. As her work got accolades and grew with regular orders she started her second venture Papyrus. “It gives me a lot of pleasure and helps my creativity take shape. Apart from customizing invites for weddings and other occasions, we also make handmade paper bags, gift boxes, wedding stationery and cater not only to Hyderabad but also to clients from all over India and abroad. Says Ujwala Ujwala has won the COWE Excellence Award in 2016 and was also selected for the Walmart sponsored Women Entrepreneurship Development Program 2016-17. Guilty Pleasures
PROMOTION
Kicking up a well-paying job in Dell, Ujwala Giri & Pavan Ravi followed their heart to start their own chocolate venture named Diletto in December 2008. True to their brand name, the duo is spreading cheer through their chocolates, desserts & other baked products. How did the idea of Diletto chocolates come about? I worked for a handmade paper studio and used to get a lot of enquiries for packaging, Pavan who at the time used to help me out, thought of venturing into chocolates since we already knew how to package them. Thus, we started experimenting with no prior training or knowledge. With small orders from friends & family, our little venture picked up pace and here we are 9 years later still going strong as a team. What is the concept/philosophy behind the store? Diletto is an Italian word, which means “something that gives great pleasure.” Having a sweet tooth ourselves and a heavy indulgence in our chocolates and baked products, we thought, it would be great to share this huge pleasure with everyone, hence the idea - Diletto. We run a professional home setup now and are on the look out to open a store very soon. What target group do you cater to? We cater not only to individual clients but also to large corporates and MNC’s. We have a tie up with a couple of automobile showrooms, event managers and our returning clients who keep coming back for more each time. In addition to the dessert tables, return/wedding favours, cake, etc we also design the packaging, the invitation for events/parties, thus becoming a one stop shop for the client. What are some of the most popular products you sell? Initially we started with just chocolates, desserts and printed chocolate but now have expanded our product range to cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, macarons and other baked products. I would say that our chocolates, truffles, brownies and cupcakes are the most popular ones. Another recent addition that has been well accepted is our Panned Confectionery. One thing that is unique to Diletto? I would say – Customization, which is not just limited to the product but can even be done for its packaging. We design and manufacture our packaging not only for ourselves but also for other home bakers, chocolatiers pan India, depending on the client’s requirement under the brand – Papyrus. Whether it’s a box of chocolates with unique flavours or an elaborate dessert table, we can execute it with perfection. How difficult is it for a venture like this to establish itself? Every venture faces its fair share of obstacles and difficulties, Diletto & Papyrus were no exception. Initially we had to concentrate not only on our product but also had to market it well to get orders. There was a constant comparison of our product with the likes of Cadbury’s, Haldiram’s, etc. It was an uphill task to convince and educate the client
especially the corporates about the uniqueness of our products, but we managed to do it and now both brands are established and doing well for themselves. Where do you take your inspiration from? Since we are self-taught, we have learnt a lot by just experimenting with different flavours and recipes, some of which even flopped. Watching a lot of videos and shows online, going through notes on the industry giants like Godiva, Hershey’s and Lindt chocolate is where we have drawn inspiration from. You’ve been in business since 2008. How has the market evolved? Gifting ideas has come a long way since 2008. The traditional sweet box given during festivals/ occasions has been replaced with chocolates and now even chocolates are being replaced with brownies, cupcakes, personalised small cakes. Even when it comes to invitations for events/parties, customers are opting to go paperless with WhatsApp invites and personalised video messages. With changing times, the tastes and preferences of client’s is also evolving, it’s an everchanging market and we too need to constantly update what we offer to the clients. Where do you see this going in the next 5-10 years? We have plans of opening a one of a kind chocolate store in the city that will have all things chocolate and to compliment it will be our packaging and wedding/invitation card design studio. We also have plans of importing a chocolate enrobing machine and a couple of other machines that will bring the whole “bean to bar” experience to the city. Facebook: Diletto Contact: 9642059600

WHATS NEW
New Stadium Menu at Chili’s
With so much of sports binge watching on the screen, there is ought to be some binge eating while enjoying the game. Chili’s launches its new stadium menu with a rush of scrumptious dishes. We tried the Bombay Burger, seasoned with south western vegetarian patty with carrots, beans, peas that are tossed with onions and sauces, - a typical Bombay burger bun. Sip on some freshly made margaritas along with the crispy sea trio, tortilla crusted basa, crispy fries with calamari, served with chipotle paired with mango margarita sauce and jalapeno aioli. Fret not vegetarians, they also have a crispy vegetarian trio to your rescue. Non vegetarians should go for the southern smokehouse burger, a perfect smoked delight of apple wood bacon, cheddar cheese, spiced onion rings, that is served with chili’s classic barbeque sauce. If you are at Chili’s, come what may never miss out on the Molten Chocolate Cake. The raspberry chocolate cheese cake is also a must here. We had an impeccable culinary ride! Mystery Rooms Hyderabad Unmatched Excitement
Love going on adventures? Looking for a dash of thrill? Mystery Rooms is the place for you. The experience, which is available in 9 other cities, is a one of its kind escape game. Teams having between 2 to 8 people are locked inside a room and have to escape from it within 60 minutes. They have a variety of challenges like Hurt Locker (bomb diffusion challenge), Lockout (prison break challenge), Abduction (in which you have to escape from kidnappers), and Cabin in the Wood (a murder mystery) with Hurt Locker being the easiest level and Cabin in the Wood the most difficult. We chose Cabin in the Woods and were in for some tough logical puzzles against the clock. We had to find clues, solve numerical puzzles and combinations and figure out patterns all while scrambling for time. Team work is extremely important and applying all our minds together was the only way we could get out of the room before the murderer came for us. Between all the detective work, we still found time for plenty of laughs and giggles and camaraderie was at an all-time high. The thrill of the experience is beyond amazing and you’ll be on your toes for the whole hour. You can book a game with friends, family and colleagues and will definitely have a blast. Just don’t forget to awaken your inner Sherlock! Address: ZONAH Neptune (SVM Mall), Second Floor, Rd Number 36, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, Telangana 500033 Phone: 077024 32441

THE HOPPERY- Olive’s first Ever Microbrewery
WHATS NEW
Olive Group Launched its first ever microbrewery in Hyderabad. The brewery is spread across a quaint glasshouse, an alfresco and a wooden deck. Step into this charming, split-level space with arguably the best view in Hyderabad. No forced ‘brewery’ aesthetic here; just a pleasant, contemporary all-day space which transcends through the day as a feel-good brewery to a lively spot at night with friends and family. It’s perfect urbane interiors come with unmatched view and a relief that only a chilled pint brings during hot summer days, especially the magic of freshly brewed craft beer with flavours so distinct, that bottled beer can only hope to match. The Hoppery has introduced four kinds of beer as of now; HopNotch (IPA), Copperead (Dark Lager), White Spice (Wheat) and HyderaBrew (a root beer inspired by the flavours of Hyderabad). For the experimental ones, there is an array of beer based cocktails as well. Sip on the Flaming Lips (jalapeno infused vodka, sweet and sour mix, beer) or indulge in The Cure (Espresso, white rum, Kahlua, maple syrup, IPA beer). There’s also a classic Beer Sangria (vodka infused fruits, apple juice, red grape juice, topped with beer) for the Sangria lovers, all of these are is easy to drink, fresh and very sessionable. Unpretentious and simple, the food menu boasts of an array of splendid flavours created by the culinary genius Chef Shaun Kenworthy. The menu comprises small plates which are fresh, with comfort flavours and delicious in taste. We would definitely recommend the Grilled Shrimp with Mango Salsa, classic Assorted Fries but a must try is Crispy TexMex Chicken Wings accompanied with choice of BBQ dip and blue cheese dip, Cheese and Chicken Ham Croquettes served with salsa rosa cocktail souse – all of which make the ideal beer bites. Location: At Olive, Durgam Cheruvu, Road 46, Near Ambedkar University, Jubilee Hills. Ph:69999127
Noc Noc Bistro
A funky new place in town, Noc Noc comes as a surprise with every dish to be lip smacking and scrumptious as ever. Starting off with the appetizers, we had the crispy lemon chicken, so on point, we are not even exaggerating. Chilli Cheese Roll is a delightful tender roll of cheese and chicken. For the mains we opted for butter chicken risotto, you cannot miss this fusion of desi and videshi with lots of spices and tadka. Stuffed chicken is also a great option when it comes to a proper authentic steak dish at Noc Noc. Pizzas just got healthier with the Pizza Amore, topped with a healthy salad topping. Don’t miss out on the pesto, it’s heavenly. Vegetarian Cannelloni, served with cheese and bread will steal your heart away. Accompany your food with mocktails like Slow Poison; we hadn’t had something like that before. End your meal with the sweet delights of Red velvet brownie and S’mores pizza, which leave you with a sugar high! 105, Kavuri Hills, Phase 2, Near State Art Gallery, Madhapur, Hyderabad, 9052002570

A library where instead of books, humans are borrowed, where instead of silence there is a encouragement to talk- Human Library, which enables people to borrow books as humans. The second human library event in India has been conducted in Hyderabad after Indore. With the basic need of understanding hardly seen, the human library provides a positive platform to the people who have been under social stigma and have come out courageously. These people become the books who openly came out to share their struggle with the random people and to be understood. The issues, which are not openly discussed such as harassment, child abuse, transgender, depression even etc, are spoken here. The readers get to choose the human books from different catalogues, lend them for a 30-minute interactive session; taking place at a personal level. There is motivation and a solution given to the readers who ask questions to their books and share their situations. They come out without any insecurity after their session. These events take place at different locations with two events already been conducted in Hyderabad. “Apart from making HLH events a monthly affair, I would like to celebrate a Human Library Hyderabad Month once the schools and colleges in Hyderabad reopen. These young minds are the future and if they are free of attaching social stigmas, we have a beautiful unified society to look forward to says Harshad Dinkar Fad, founder of Human Library Hyderabad. An interactive session with a human touch thus bringing a change in the society is a very comprehensive step, providing people someone to talk to freely about any issue. Congratulations on your collaboration with Mac. Tell me something about the line. These are my new favourites from Mac. There are some classics like Mehr and Yash from my old collection but it’s basically my new favourites because over a period of time your favourites change, right? You can’t keep using the same products again and again. You know people go to a MAC store and they get so confused after seeing so many things, so this could help them to sort of narrow down 40 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP
to what could work for them. When was the first time you ever experimented with makeup? I think it was in ’79. I actually wanted to be a hairstylist but they weren’t allowing me to do hair so I got into makeup because that was allowed. The industry was accepting so I started my journey in makeup. You do makeup for so many events – movies, fashion shows, and weddings.
Which one do you enjoy most? Of course movies! There’s no doubt about that. I became a makeup artist only because I wanted to do that. What are the challenges you face? Especially in India where people always want fair skin and there are so many controversies centred around the same. This used to happen a lot earlier but now I think it’s come down. People today are more comfortable in their skin and are celebrating
LIFESTYLE BEAUTY regularly by the time they are 24-25. It’s the one thing I’d strongly advise. If your skin is well moisturized, everything is good. That way even the white flakiness and dryness that happens can be avoided and consequently, makeup doesn’t look flaky. Moisturizing is what makes your skin look healthy. Any skincare advice for girls who are in the early twenties? Avoid using oil-based moisturizers because sometimes the skin may react to them. Use water-based moisturizers, they do a good job of keeping skin healthy.
their complexions. Of course there are some people who are still obsessed with being fair. When people come to me asking me to make them look fairer, I explain my point to them. With my seniority and experience, usually they let me go ahead with my thing. But there are still people who will say, “Nahi please, my husband likes it when I look fair,” then in that case, I give in and instead of doing one shade lighter, I’ll do maybe half a shade. So everybody’s happy in the end. What makeup trend you think will take 2017 by storm? I think glossy lips will be it. Matte is here to stay because it’s more convenient and it doesn’t go away easily, but I think gloss will be back and eventually it’ll gave way to semi-matte because overt shininess will go out. There’s too much shine right now, so people will eventually realize the value of keeping it semi-matte. It might even start by the end of the year, but it definitely will happen. People today are following so many skin regimes across ages. Do you think there is a fixed age where people should start following a skin routine? I think moisturizing should start pretty early in life. Men and women both should start moisturizing
A few products that you swear by? Maybe drugstore products because they’re more accessible? No, frankly I don’t use any drugstore products because my clientele is not that kind. I only use MAC. I think the Studio Fix Fluid Foundation is a great product. I swear by the Fluid Line – it’s basically a gel eyeliner. I also work with the Conceal and Correct Palette a lot. Tell me about two trends that you’ve never liked? I don’t like the excessively overt shine. All this nonsense that’s been all over Instagram these days – I don’t like that at all. I believe in doing makeup that is wearable for everybody and trends that are wearable for most people because who even does that kind of makeup with all the excessive shading and highlighting! And to top it off, there’s glitter on the eyes and the mouth and nose, it all becomes too much. I like something that it wearable and flattering instead of something that makes people look like ghosts. Your favourite muse in Bollywood? I have many people I like working with, but my all-time favourite is definitely Aishwarya Rai. Can you give us some makeup tips to tackle the sultry summer? When it’s excessively hot, using foundation is important because it ensures that the makeup doesn’t become patchy or blotchy. Try to stay away from cream products, especially in the daytime because they start to bleed all over your face. Use powders instead, like a powder blush instead of a cream blush because it looks too oily and shiny. What is your take on these male YouTube stars who make makeup videos and are hugely popular? To each their own and good luck! Facebook: Mickey Contractor Instagram: @ mickeycontractor Twitter: @M_Contractor

Contemplating over cho ices or going for a signat ure treatment, Sheraton’s spa is an abode to unwinding. After we choose a treatment, (in our case it was a customised – Hot Stone Treatment) the therapist led us to ou r room which was compac t but cosy and the lighting was adj usted as per the guest’s comfort zone. Hot Stone Massage at The Spa, Sheraton is highly rec ommended for all the guests. Imagin e lying on a massage tab le, letting the stress and anxieties melt away as your muscles are therapeutically manipulated with comfor tably placed hot stones. A regular deep tissue massage is incredibly relaxing, and the additio nal use of hot stones makes this massa ge therapy an increasingly popular pick at day spas. It is a process wh ere the therapist uses sm ooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands, by placin g them on the body. The heat generated can be both deeply soothing and help loosen up tight muscles. The therapist makes you feel comfortable in the ambience and explains the procedure asking your stressed areas and starts off by mildly pressing and massaging your whole body with oil. After that she sanitizes the stones and heats them. The masseuse always holds the stones first before touching them to your
body, which ensures tha t the temperature is not too hot. She will gently rub the stone into muscles and issues on bo th sides of the body; the firmness of the stone coupled with the hea t enhances the curative benefits of ma ssage. She might also lea ve heated stones in specific key po ints along your spine, in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or che st and help you relax. The process is repeated on the entire bo dy for duration of 60-90 minutes, as per your choice. After wrapp ing up the massage, you r body feels calm and de-stressed. Combinin g the hot stone procedure with a full body massage provides a very healing and effectiv e experience. The hot stones also help expand blood vessels, wh ich encourages blood flow throughout the body. They have a sedativ e effect that can relieve chronic pai n, reduce stress and promo te deep relaxation. However, the massage should not be tak en by people who suffer from any hea rt disease or high blood pressure. The therapist shall accompan y you to the refreshing ste am, followed by an invigorating bath. The massage therapy ends by them serving a cup of green tea to leave you revitalized and energiz ed for the day. Location: Sheraton Hyde rabad Hotel, 115/1, ISB Rd, Financial District, Gachibowli. Regina COVER STORY
What makes The coolest girl of Tollywood?
Regina Cassandra is one of the most successful actors in the industry today and her enthusiasm and passion for her work shines through in all of her projects. Over a bowl of superfoods (that she sweetly offers us), the star opens up about her career, beauty regime and home life!
What is your least favourite thing about being an actor? The fact that my sleep patterns are all over the place. We don’t have particular timings to shoot and stuff and sometimes we work on a hundred things besides the shoot and sometimes we have like night shoots at 2am. If not an actor, what would you be today? Psychologist. When you sign a movie or take on a project, what is the first thing you look for? What makes you say yes? Right now, because of the place I’m in in my life, it’s mostly the script and the director. What genre of films do you like doing and why? Everything. I can’t really pick a favourite. Who’s your style icon? There’s so many people that I look at on Instagram every day. I love JLo. She’s like an icon for me. How would you define beauty? Simple. I think the simplicity makes people look beautiful and that’s what beauty means to me. Your favourite thing to do to relax and unwind when you’re not working? I love chilling with my friends. I don’t get any time to meet them when I’m working so I make sure to hang out with them when I get time off. 44 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP

Your cheat day food? I’ll eat anything. I’m not a huge fan of pizzas and burgers. I love dosas. I’m very Indian when it comes to food. But given the chance, I’ll eat anything. Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years? I don’t know. It’s great to plan but I really can’t say where I’ll be 5-10 years later. But I do see myself still working and doing bigger things. 5 things you always have in your bag? My lip balm, my house keys, my Chennai house keys that I carry wherever I go, my wallet obviously and my perfume or my shades. There are so many things actually. I don’t carry a small bag. I carry a big bag that has my headphones, my cream – everything. Then I have my small pouch that has my kajal and other little makeup products that I’d probably need for a touch-up. When I can’t find a dustbin, I also throw wrappers inside it. What’s the craziest fan moment you’ve encountered? I don’t know about the crazy part but there are some really sweet fan moments. I’d put up something about starting my new film on Twitter and a fan actually came to the set and congratulated me and gave me a box of cupcakes. I was very touched by his sweet gesture. How important is it to make friends in the industry? Very important. But not any kind of friends. It is important to make genuine friends who will stand by you. There are so many crossovers that happen between different languages and industries, is it important to know the language you’re acting in? For me, it is. But I speak only for myself. There are a lot of woman centric movies coming out, do you think you’d like to do a film like that? Not at this point in my life.
COVER STORY
should be so my team is very important to me. If I don’t have the right people, and things aren’t the way I want, I get very irritated. I also take time to get used to new people. I V Reddy, Priyanka and my hair and makeup artist, Bobby Kasara & Chinna Babu – I’ve worked with them for 5-6 years now – are people I just can’t do without. I know I can always rely on them and they help keep me sane! The positivity of the people who believe in me makes me want to do well, not even want to really, I just naturally do well.
How would you describe your journey so far? A rollercoaster definitely. I am a very moody person and that’s probably because of my journey and what I have seen in life so far because I’ve seen quite a lot. It has been an amazing journey and I truly believe that the journey is what makes the end count. How would you describe your personal style? Very crazy – the boho traveller type. I like to be natural and I would like that to show in my style. I like effortless. I don’t like putting in too much effort or trying too hard. Social media has become such an important part of being a celebrity. How do you deal with the negativity that it often brings along? I fight it with my own positivity and the people around me. I don’t have to push myself away from negativity. I just naturally move away, it happens on its own. Does it take a toll on you sometimes? Even if there’s negativity, I still strive and try to turn it into positivity. I try my best to do that, especially if it’s with a negative person. I want to see that person in a better state of mind. Are you open to roles from Bollywood? Yes, I am open to offers from Bollywood.
Can I know your skincare and hair beauty regime? I go to my dermatologist regularly. That’s what I tell everybody – go to your dermatologist regularly! I make sure that no matter where I am and no matter how inconvenient I have to make it for people, when I wake up I drink my ginger water. I always start my day with cinnamon and ginger water. I also eat aloe vera every day for 2 weeks. For my hair, I go for a hair spa regularly. I use a heat protectant and my mum pampers my hair with curry leaf oil. When you’re not working, what is your routine like? If I am at home in Chennai, I wake up late. Late means 9 o’clock. I can’t sleep for longer because I’m so used to shooting that even 9 feels very late. I love going rockclimbing and surfing. I love adventure sports. I go for a spa. I love my massages. I go to the parlour. I just like to unwind and basically just chill. I meet my friends because I don’t get to meet them very often. With WhatsApp and all, you can talk to them but how often can you actually sit down with them and spend some quality time? So whenever I can make time, I do. My mum keeps screaming at me, “every time you come here, you’re always outside! You’re never home.” But I’m sure that if I had like a month, I’d be home more often but since I only get a week, I have to divide my time. I love hanging out with my friends when I’m there. So much so that when I’m with them, I even forget about my phone! Where do you get inspiration from? I think my team definitely inspires me to do better. The people who are around me and believe in me keep me motivated. The people close to me, Vamsi for example, he’s shot so many times with me and I don’t know if you’d call it inspiration, but he makes me want to give my best. I am a perfectionist and I can’t stand it if things aren’t just as they -As told to Ishna Rawlani

g n i st a e Ramzan F & Shopping Hyderabad celebrates Ramzan with fervour and the festival is an integral part of our social, religious, and cultural heritage. The month is a sacred one and people give up worldly pleasures and pray to get closer to God. Despite the fact that there is strict fasting all day, evenings are a time for celebration. It is an occasion for people to visit their family and friends, and iftar parties are an indispensable part of Ramzan. It is also the time for charity – people distribute food among the poor and donate to charities and NGOs.
THE NIGHT MARKET
The sun goes down and the lights come on. In the Old City, you’ll see tiny shops lit up with small yellow bulbs, with bangles and other jewellery reflecting the light off of themselves. You’ll see dozens of clothes in every colour of the rainbow, with sequins and tassels decorating them more often than not. There are bangles to go with every shade of your outfit and bindis, earrings, necklaces, bracelets to match. Even tiny hole in the wall shops prove to be treasure troves and you can keep looking at their wares for ages. The shopkeepers yell their best offers at the top of their voices and the ensuing medley of shouts announces festivity. The haggle between the shopkeepers and the customers is interesting to say the least. The bustle carries on until the wee hours of morning and the energy of the place is such that not once will you catch yourself looking at your watch. 46 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP

OF HALEEM AND FRUIT SALAD
No Indian festival is complete without its signature dishes. Ramzan has become almost synonymous with Haleem and there’s no better place to get Haleem than in Old City. Pista House and Shah Ghouse have built a reputation for themselves – taste their meaty Haleem of just the right consistency and you’ll know why. The biryani is a beloved favourite and Shadab Hotel serves some great biryani. Pather ka gosht, kebabs, and nahari also deserve honourable mentions. If you’re looking for a quick snack, you can make a stop at the fruit stalls or the juice stalls, or you can get a cup of steaming Irani chai and a couple of fluffy Osmania biscuits from Nimrah Bakery. The best part is after having your fill of Ramzan fare after iftaar, you can shop around until it’s time for sehri, and eat more delicious food!
Ramzan is a holy month and we try to tap into our spiritual sides. But when it’s time to break the fast, during iftar and sehri, the whole family gets together to break the fast and eat delicious food – every day there’s a new menu. Most of the food is homemade and haleem, fruit chaat and dahi wada are must-haves on the menu. My favourite is definitely the fruit chaat. Iftar parties go on throughout the month and it becomes a reason to get together and celebrate. For sehri also, we go out for food late in the night. Every year Hyderabad House has the Zaiqa-e-Ramzan where we go to eat. The whole city is open that late and it’s full of life. When it comes to clothes, people mostly buy them right before Eid and I usually head to Elahe to pick up an outfit for myself. My own label is on hold right now but we also stock up for Ramzan because it’s when people come shopping. During Ramzan, we look for comfortable clothes but Eid is all about looking good and going out so it’s all blingy outfits. Sana Khan, Fashion Designer 48 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP
“Ramzan for all of us as a community has a lot of meaning. We have to know what the poor and underprivileged people go through and how they survive and so our religion tells us to live like that for a month so we can have that experience. But Ramzan is also a month of feasting, it’s a grand festival for us. In the evenings, when it’s time to break the fast, you can see lots of people on the streets and the there’s huge amounts of good. Actually, there’s no end to food in the whole month. I go mad about Haleem. I wait 11 months of the year so I can binge on Haleem in the 12th month. Even in the early mornings, when it’s time for sehri, you find food like khichdi khatta, kheema and tala hua gosht and these are some of my favourite dishes. We also do a lot of charity during this month which includes distributing food and clothes. We have to calculate our yearly income and donate 6% of that. It’s not necessary that you have to donate to poor people outside, you can even help out someone in your own family who needs that help. There’s also a lot of shopping. You go shopping for others, and you go shopping for yourself. This is the month in which your wardrobe changes because you can buy clothes for the entire year. There is also lots of socializing but only for religious purposes.” Salman Ahmed, Advocate

Handmade With

Handmademore than ever is a strong direction for the future. Since past few decades we have seen a massive surge in the interest of people in handmade things. First to rediscover nearly forgotten shapes and techniques to associate these manmade objects with industrial ones. Then to inspire serial productions with a handmade twist and now to map a new road for creation taking into account not only local talents yet also local and sustainable production. There are a lot of factors that drive the demand for handmade products- including uniqueness, their connection with history and the way they narrate a story. The new designs used to rebuild the old techniques are appealing to the urban crowd in many ways. People are drawn to connective parts of product stories as they help the owner incorporate a piece of their personal life be it décor, clothing or jewelry. Not many people would wear heavy Orissa ikat saris. So, the collection will have easy tops, blouses- something you could wear with a pair of jeans, but at the same time, is very handloom. RituKumar was the first designer to initiate the handloom revival in Indian fashion. “Handlooms are not glamorous, they do not adapt to ramp shows. But sustaining handlooms is about enabling women, who traditionally did peripheral jobs in the sector but are now turning weavers. This is an intrinsic industry, hard to sustain, like growing cotton or silk itself, but as the world moves towards industrial fashion, only India can nurture, through handlooms, the most natural lifestyle, given the environmental situation in the globe.” –Designer, Ritu Kumar Store Address: Hyderabad Central Mall, 6-3-673/1-4, Punjagutta Rd, Punjagutta, Hyderabad. Studio Shikha Malik “There was no deliberate action/ intention to become a fashion designer. However, I was always inclined towards creative work as I come from a creative family and love for clothes gave birth to a random thought of joining a fashion school which eventually became an integral part of my journey. After years of experience I decided to start my own label- Studio Shikha Malik. It has been a great experience exploring and learning new things and incorporating that in our collection every-time we design. Thanks to our clients who appreciate our work and encourage us to do better. Different from others I would say - A zest to deliver stylish yet wearable and comfortable designs in a very competitive prices makes it little challenging. It’s been 5 good years in this industry now. An urge to learn and try different things will help us grow and take our brand one step ahead in coming time.” Shikha, Designer and Founder, Studio Shikha Malik Shop: www.shikhamalik.com, Instagram: labelshikhamalik, Facebook: studioshikhamalik/
Ekadi Ekadi comes from amalgamating her name Ekta and the Sanskrit word “adi” meaning many, and it meant Ekta and many more people involved in weaving different stories. “Ekadi” hence echoes the singular effort of many individuals. The Ekadi woman is unflustered and unaffected by seasonal trends, she is at ease with her identity and her clothes reflect her statement, the line that they do is relaxed and easy. It is for the contemporary woman who is trying to fit into the international scenario but is connected strongly to her roots. This also happens to be the woman who is comfortable in her own skin and who likes to wear clothes according to her personality and not vice versa.” Such women are Ekta Gupta’s inspiration that reflect in her creations. We talk to her as she tells us how design has always meant providing solutions. “Our process of hence started with asking questions- sometimes we answer the question and sometimes we question the answers- and in this journey we explore new material and new processes. Our identity is to change and innovate, we take a basic philosophy, study it, derive concepts at a deeper level to create the next. We are trying to break away from the frenzy of mass production and focus on the care and attention given to individual hand crafted products. We have tapped different markets through exhibitions and by retailing through different stores. Our designs are functional and timeless, blending the rustic with the raw. Each piece has a distinctive detail in fluid cuts and natural fabrics”, she says. Instagram: @label.ekadi. Facebook: @labelekadi, www.ekadi.in 52 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP
FASHION Nirjara Nirjara is a one stop shop for the most royal and intricately couture and was founded by Nirjara Shah. She explains how she found her inspiration to start the label. “My mother has always had royal aesthetics with deep interests in jewelry and clothing. She has always been elegant and graceful yet has kept it minimal. That is where I found my inspiration; I decided to pursue fashion designing when I was in 8th Grade. After studying fashion designing for 4 years, I got a clearer picture of the fashion world. Hence, I wanted to serve as a designer with aesthetics passed on by my mother- my teacher. The response has been really amazing and it is surprising to know that people still have a connection with old world fashion. Next we are coming up with a totally different line of sustainable fashion”, she says. Instagram: @nirjara_99 Facebook: NIRJARA. Contact: info.nirjara@yahoo. com

Adheera Dipika Udhani who founded Adheera, speaks to us about the brand. “It began with an insouciant interest in learning tie and dye techniques of imprinting. A casual endeavor born out of curiosity, soon grew strong when I explored varied patterns by tying left over scraps and dyeing them. The accidental outcomes were surprisingly encouraging and owing to the fact that the exercise didn’t limit my creativity, every piece seemed like a canvas, waiting to be painted. Not long after, I learnt certain folding technique of Japanese origin, to be used in dyeing, called ‘itajime’. ‘Itajime,’ “arashi’ ‘ nui ‘ to name a few in turn, are all a part of a 400 year old method of tie and dye called ‘Shibori’. Another technique I came across was pole wrapping and dyeing, named ‘Arashi’, which gives rise to beautiful diagonal stripes. An exploration in depth of these techniques and more eventually furthered my interest and inspired me to conceive a product rooted in this art: something away from the usual, that people would love to indulge in something that would tell a story in patterns and colors yet will be equally novel and unbound from tradition. From that moment on I made patterns, started draping, and got them stitched. Along with my tailor and dyer from Uttar Pradesh, we are a team of three. All handcrafted drapes that we produce are a result of us doing what we love”, says Dipika. Instagram: @adheerabydipikaudhani. Facebook: @addheera. Best Party Places Next time you go partying, don’t forget to check out these places! We bring to you the 7 most happening party places in the city.
AirLive
#1
The USP of our place from the beginning is that we play live music. When we opened Air Live, there were lots of places that had DJs playing music but there were no places playing live or Bollywood music. It’s spread over 8000 sq. feet and has a 20 feet high ceiling so it doesn’t feel claustrophobic. It’s a place for anybody and everybody who enjoys live music, good food, and alcohol At the end of the day it’s all for the music. The stage is in the centre of the bar and is raised for the artist. Even the equipment and lights are of the highest quality and sometimes on Saturdays, it even feels like a concert. I don’t see another AirLive happening in Hyderabad because it’s a unique and premium place. It’s a little expensive and that maintains the exclusivity of the place. The Lal Street
#3
A man walks into a bar, fires up his mobile app – The Lal Street and gets his choice of booze in a single flick. That’s the business model of a few start-ups. We serve global brands in The Lal Street. The three month old venture has picked up well in the market of Hyderabad. When we started off, we realised that no one was doing anything consumer centric. What we bring to the table is brand loyalty. The newly launched The Lal Street app allows consumers to buy their favourite liquor brands. The business model mimics the stock market. Just like the shares at the stock market, prices of alcohol rise and fall and can be tracked on the LED screens in the bar. Prices go up and down based on the demand and supply for a particular brand of alcohol. Mr. Prashant, Manager Address: Jayabheri Enclave, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, Telangana 500032. Phone: 040 6745 4545

Dock 45
Dock 45 came about because we wanted to be the first modular club in Hyderabad. We wanted to do something different from other clubs. We wanted containers but we couldn’t use the original containers because we couldn’t get the height and length that we needed. So we fabricated every piece of the containers – they’re not actually real. It is named Dock 45 because Dock comes from dockyard and 45 because we’re on road number 45. It’s basically a lounge-bar. People can come at 7 and relax and then the lights and music change at 10 and it becomes a nightclub. Some places are exclusively lounges and some places are exclusively nightclubs but we offer both things. We want to expand and have our club on every road in Gachibowli – Dock82, Dock 1 and so on. We don’t want to continue with Dock 45. We’ll give each one a name based on the road it’s on. OTM is always there to set the standards for partying. The goal is to give the people of Hyderabad the best musical experience and so we have the best DJs and artists come and perform here. Our food is also top notch and we have a great kitchen. Our bar and cocktails are also popular and we recently introduced a microbrewery which is doing very well. We have six different flavours of beer that we brew here and serve fresh. We have two club areas where we play music– Junoon and OTM. Both areas play different genres of music. OTM is an open air place, it’s on a rooftop, because the generation has changed. People want to be outdoors, close to nature. Our lounge section High is also open air and has a complete view of Hyderabad and one side you can see Jubilee Hills and on the other you can see Hitec City. The concept is to be open air and since we’re on the rooftop, we actually party under the moon. Tiki Shack
#7
Tiki is basically a Hawaiian god and in places like USA and those parts of the world, Tiki shacks are very common and that’s where the concept is coming from. We wanted to do a Hawaiian shack originally but we ended up with a Goan shack and we changed things accordingly. For any watering hole to be popular, I think 4 things are essential – the drinks need to be well priced, the music needs to be for everybody, the food needs to match the place, and crowd segregation needs to be done right. Tiki Shack is for hard core partying. We’re packed even on Mondays. The place has a very easy going vibe and we’re not bound by rules of dressing etc. It’s the friendly neighbourhood bar that you can go to every day and chill. #1
Good Earth is a store that caters to luxury home items like upholstery, tableware, cushions, bath products and bedsheets and quilts. Their approach to luxury is very craft oriented and the influence of nature and Indian arts and crafts is apparent in their products. “Anita Lal is the Founder & Creative Director of Good Earth and she is the woman behind the idea and our products. The entire store is planned by Good Earth. We translate their plans into action and work with their philosophy. Our products are crafted by hand, inspired by nature and enchanted by history. We work with sustainable materials like cotton, silk and Khadi. Even Sustain the apparel brand sticks to sustainability. The design team in Delhi works under the supervision of Anita Lal and so the design concepts are well thought out and the production is quality conscious. Tonique: For high end spirits
Tonique is the largest alcohol store in India. Imagine a huge room filled with alcohol from all over the world, decorated in never ending shelves, with beautiful lighting and an elegant aesthetic – that’s Tonique for you. “What makes Tonique a luxury store is the ambience-our store is spread over 10,000 sq. feet and is air conditioned. We even have a valet service. As a person, I would never go to a traditional liquor store – standing in lines, no parking space and people drinking right outside. Instead, in Tonique you can walk and choose what you want. Our main advantage is the wine training and tasting room where we train our customers on wines. We have all kinds of imported liquors and all the high end IMFL that is available in the state. The price range of our products is from Rs 900 to Rs 5, 25,000.” Anith Reddy – Director Address: 645, Rd Number 36, Aditya Enclave, Venkatagiri, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. Phone:040 6552 2727

Casa Pop: For quirky and kitschy interiors
Wallpapers, textiles, bed linen, bath and beauty products, trunks, crockery, handbags, stoles, keychains, candles – you name it, they have it. Casa Pop is cute, colourful, and quirky while remaining distinctly Indian. “We use a lot of print and colour. Our collections are inspired by India. For example, Company Raj is inspired by Mughals and their elephants. Opium is inspired by the Indian block print concept. We have cushions, bedspreads, accessories for homes, custom made wallpapers that we deliver in about 15 days, fabrics, and fashion accessories. Our price range is luxury because everything is designer. Delhibased designer Raseel Gujral designs all our stuff. We are getting only limited stuff so it doesn’t get too common. I make sure that I don’t sell the same items to the same group of people to protect the uniqueness. Basically, we plan to take the interior world with colour and just spread our colour around.” Nidhi Agarwal, store owner Address: 283, Rd Number 12, MLA Colony, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. Burberry: For elite fashion
#6
Burberry is one of the most luxurious brands today. Thomas Burberry started off by selling outdoor wear and invented Garbandine – the fabric that was about to take the world by storm. It was breathable, waterproof and light and was immensely popular because the other rainwear options of the time were bulky and cumbersome. They then opened their first store in 1891 in London. They even developed the essential item in every fashionista’s wardrobe today – the trench coat. Though it’s seen on the runways every season, it was originally made for the military because of its practical utility. They also became the brand of choice for polar explorers and pilots. Eventually Burberry made its way into the elite fashion club that it is part of even today. They have a huge range of products – T-shirts, button downs, skirts, scarves, hats, shoes, ponchos, capes, belts, swimwear, handbags, trousers, and an entire range of beauty and makeup products. There’s one thing all these products have in common though, and that is the famed Burberry finesse. Address: Taj Krishna Hotel - Road No 1, Hyderabad. Phone:040 6663 5659

SPECIAL Art is our escape from the banality of existence. It serves as a creative (and emotional) outlet for the artist and touches the souls of its audience. Hyderabad has a rich cultural and historic heritage and art is an integral part of this heritage. From the architecture of the Charminar and the Golkonda Fort, to the textiles of Pochampalli, from the rooms of the Salarjung museum to the street art on flyovers – art is everywhere. Hyderabad is also home to a lot of artists from different fields and backgrounds but sadly they don’t get the importance they deserve. Here we have 7 artists giving us insight into their lives and their work.
We Heart Art!
Priyanka Aelay: Carrying the Legacy of Paints Forward
#1
I’ve been in this field for the last 6-7 years. After my 12th grade, I was given 2 options: art or medicine. Even though I was good at academics, medicine really wasn’t my cup of tea so I took up art. I wasn’t sure if it was what I really wanted to do but after a couple of years, I never looked back. When I was growing up I wasn’t really into art. My father has a great collection of art and books and he wanted me to use it. My mediums are very experimental and I like working with different textures and pastel colours. Since my process is layer on layer, even bright colours become less bright. I am also dabbling in new media art with practical mediums and AV installations. Among my inspirations, the first would be my father because I’ve been looking at his work since I was a child. I’m also a big fan of Frida Kahlo and the Progressive Artist’s Group especially FN Souza. But I believe that when you are inspired by someone, they needn’t reflect in your work. Style and the bold approach is what I admire in the artists that I like but they use bright and cold colours whereas I use pastel and subtle colours. I like working more on the fragmentation of flora and fauna, along with the social, political and cultural issues. As I have grown up in a metro I feel more connected to the growing scene of the cultural space of Hyderabad. The thing that I love the most about Hyderabad is its cultural heritage. I believe there is no other city close to this which is a package of culture, a great history and politics, not to forget the food! The cultural scene in Hyderabad is surely growing. The public is getting exposed not just to art but also various kind of art mediums such as public art, poetry, literature, dance, theatre and music. Art has all the abilities, and powers to initiate the change in a human, environment and the city by itself. The whole perception of oneself changes when one gets deeply involved with art. In the next 5 -10 years I am sure the whole scenario of art would change more positively by welcoming lot of new emerging art, artists mediums and spaces.” Priyanka Aelay, artist
Shilpa Suraj: Storytelling beyond the Usual Fluff and Mush
“I love words, love reading them and love writing them. I am a storyteller at heart and the most fascinating chapter in my life is my fifteen month old daughter. I started writing seriously after I got married five years ago. I took a sabbatical from work and accompanied my husband on a work related assignment thinking I would get to spend quality time with him. He was crazy busy and I was crazy bored. I started typing away on my laptop then and haven’t stopped since. There’s never been a point in my life when I haven’t had a story to tell. The only difference is earlier I got punished for it and now I get paid for it. I have an over active imagination so most of my stories just come from there. Anything and everything can be a source of inspiration. When it comes to life, I don’t need to look beyond my parents for inspiration. If I could be half the person either one of them is, I would consider myself blessed. Time away from what I’m working on is usually the best solution I have for writer’s block. My writer’s block also tends to unblock itself at the most inappropriate or inconvenient moments. Once, I came up with a plot twist for Rescued by Love at a health check-up. The scene was practically writing itself in my head. That inattention coupled with the doctor’s abysmal handwriting made following the prescription handed to me practically impossible. Hyderabad is home to me. I feel like I know the city inside out and yet there is something new to discover every single day. The culture here is eclectic, evolving, and exploratory. I love the way the cultural scene in the city is changing and diversifying and am excited to see what the future holds for us.” Shipa Suraj, author of Rescued by Love and The Girl he Left Behind

Avinash Matta: Theatre with a Twist
#3
SPECIAL
“I am basically a theatre person. I write and direct plays but now I mostly do acting. I am also pursuing poetry. I hope to release a book of poems next year. I enjoy writing poetry because it’s what comes naturally and effortlessly to me. You can say so much in such few words. I love Gulzar’s poetry. There’s one of his poems about the existential crisis of a paper boat. It’s beautifully written. I was into short film making for 1-1.5 years. But I started to feel that films rely too heavily on commercial expectations. You can’t have anything too abstract or surrealistic and masala entertainment sells. Theatre happened to me by chance. My film was screened in Lamakaan and a director liked my performance and asked if I was interested in theatre. I said yes and there was no looking back. Acting on stage is different from acting for films. The audience is looking at you from head to toe and you have to be the character. It also makes the audience employ their imaginations. My full time job is social media marketing. When we begin the plays and start rehearsing, it’s not too tight so I can manage easily by going either before work or after. Right before a show it becomes hectic but my boss, colleagues and clients are all very supportive – they even came and watched one of my shows. The theatre scene in Hyderabad has evolved – there is more audience and more avenues – but there’s a long way to go. In Mumbai, I watched a few plays and was amazed. Their level is great because people there can be full time actors and that brings in professionalism. There is also a need for contemporary content. I also work with the LGBT community and these days we have more events and more people coming out. We are exploring intersectionality. People have become open and warm. In the next 5-10 years, I want to put up bigger productions, have bigger sets and dabble in experimental theatre. Live plays are fascinating and I’d love to do something like that.” Avinash Matta, theatre artist
Threeory: The Coolest Band in Town
#4
“Threeory started with 3 people: the violinist, the keyboardist and a drummer. They wanted to make a new theory in music and that’s how the name came about. Then I joined in and then the guitarist and then another drummer. That’s the band now. We have a violinist trained in Carnatic music and so we blend western music with classical music. Our genre is progressive fusion rock and since there’s not a lot of bands here playing that kind of music, we’re trying to make it popular. In the beginning we struggled a lot because there weren’t a lot of venues for live music and there were DJs everywhere. We’d get a coffee shop, or a 5-star hotel or other such small and boring places to play at and people would only want to listen to the songs they knew and not new music. We wanted to bring new music to people but that wasn’t happening and we didn’t get paid. Now though it is at least 10 times better. We play at places like Heart Cup Coffee, AirLive, Amnesia and lots of other places like these. We also play at festivals and travel to places like Mumbai, Vizag, Pune etc. What I love about Hyderabad is the people of course and the fact that everything is so chilled out and laid back, no one is in a hurry like in Mumbai. Even the traffic isn’t bad and it’s one of the best places for live music right now. We’re working on some original songs right now and we post covers on YouTube once a month. We’ve also released some music on YouTube. We want to focus on making original music and play only our music in our shows. We play 2 or 3 originals right now and people love it. We’re also hoping to make an album or at least release with 8 or 9 songs.” Syntyche Mongro, lead vocalist, Threeory TULIP - JUNE, 2017 67

Hari Krishna: Using Sand to Raise Social Awareness
“I am actually from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh but I moved to Hyderabad and that’s mostly where I perform. I also travel to various places to spread my art. I’ve been into sand art since 2012, after I completed my BFA course from Jawaharlal Nehru Fine Arts University (JNFAU) Hyderabad. I am deeply inspired by nature and society. My first inspired sand work stemmed from the influence the Nirbhaya gang rape incident. I don’t know how many people my work could inspire but I hope that out of all the people who saw it, at least one person would be influenced by it. Recently, after the Baahubali 2 craze, I’ve also made work featuring the characters from Baahubali. Nature also inspires me a lot and if you were to look at my profile pictures on Facebook and YouTube, it’s Nirbhaya’s face with flowers, water and other nature-related elements. Hyderabad has so many different cultures and traditions and even middle class families can live here happily. Apart from being an artist, I am also a social worker. I fought against the Andhra Pradesh government to stop the illegal construction of Shilparamam in the lake area and after presenting my case in the High Court, I won and the High Court stopped the 6 crore project. I love animals and work at an animal care centre too. In the next 5-10 years, I hope to do my best to earn money and promote my sand art. For a good cause also, money is important. I donate half the money I earn from my events to the animal care centre. For people looking to take up sand art, there are coaching centres in Mumbai, but art is a form of creativity. It cannot be learnt artificially. It is born in the artist’s mind.” Hari Krishna, sand artist
Aarti Vir: Breathing Life into Ceramic and Clay
#6
“While my art work is a medium of expression and communication, the making process is a very private, solitary one for me. And while the concepts behind the art work might be layered, the form itself is often minimalistic. In 1990 as a student of painting at the fine arts faculty - Maharaja Sayaji Rao University in Baroda, was the first time that I came across clay as a medium. Subsequently I learnt ceramics at the Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry for three years. I had my first firing in my first kiln in April 2000. I’ve rebuilt the kiln twice after that and been working consistently for seventeen years. I work with clay because apart from the fact that I love the material - the malleability, the expressiveness, the completely ‘down to earth’ness of it, the entire process of making and firing engages me on multiple levels. I love the fragility of the raw work and the transformation after it has been through fire. Every stage in the process is fraught with uncertainty and an ultimate relinquishing of control - much like life. Talking of pottery in India, the traditional potters have suffered in the last few decades of course. But I think there is increasingly an awareness and resurgence of interest in using pottery. Studio pottery is definitely more popular now than it has ever been in India. There are a lot more people who’ve had some sort of an exposure to pottery and handmade ceramics today, than when I first started working. Even if people just want to dabble in it as a hobby, I think it creates an awareness. But pottery / ceramics is not an easy medium to learn or pursue. It requires material, space, time and a lot of mistakes before one gets good at it. I think there will be a lot of people learning pottery as a hobby. But committed consistent artists, far fewer.” Aarti Vir, pottery and ceramic artist

Ananda Shankar Jayant: Dancing Against All Odds
“I was introduced to dance at the age of 4 at the Subrahmanya temple in Marredpally, when a lady told my mother that I had large eyes and I should learn dance! She was Smt. Sharada Keshava Rao my first teacher. My journey has seen me learn at Kalakshetra, return to learn Kuchipudi, perform across the globe, teach, choreograph, and curate festivals and conferences. I have also known the power of dance as passion, to overcome life’s many challengesmine was a tryst with breast cancer - and now I am a speaker and writer on the power of pursuing one’s passion. My biggest inspirations have been my mother, and then my Guru Rukmini Devi Arundale. I believe there is a relationship between the space and the artist. The space must be conducive to dance, in both the physical space as well as the energies that the space imbibes. That is why artistes consecrate the space with a puja, with the Nataraja idol etc. For the dancer the space she steps into becomes her temple .and that is why I get very angry when people – chief guests, technicians, announcers etc., blithely come on stage with their footwear! Sometimes even younger artistes forget the sacredness of the stage and come on with footwear and I have had no hesitation in ticking them off. I really wish we had better spaces for performances in Hyderabad. It is rather sad, that we have so many malls but only one Ravindra Bharati – that too in a drab state of disrepair. Hyderabad has always been home for me and I love its gentle cosmopolitanism and accepting nature. I especially like Hyderabad, for its very nonpartisan, nonparochial and non-judgemental nature. The cultural scene though can do with a lot more! Hyderabad, is gung ho on movies, theatre, Hindustani music, visual arts and of course all things Western but I wish there was more space and support for the next generation for classical performing arts.” Ananda Shankar Jayant, Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi dancer 68 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP

Capturing Moments in Time From pre-wedding shoots and maternity shoots, to amateur pictures on Instagram and Snapchat, photography has become an almost essential skill in today’s world. We bring to you tips, tricks and anecdotes from seven of the best photographers in town. Vamsi and Prudhvi Stargaze Studios,
#1
Vamsi and Prudhvi started with Photography as their hobby and they have been doing it for 8 years now. We find out what they have to say about their passion. “Photographers in general fall into two categories, based on the genres they pursue. Some do it by capturing and documenting things that are happening around them, example photojournalism, while the others try to work things from the scratch by building the shot as they havee envisioned. Exemplified by fashion photography and others, we happen to fall in the second kind. We love shooting fashion, food, product and lifestyle. We respect all the genres and bow down to the creative people from the fraternity who inspire us in so many ways. However, the most challenging is product photography, it takes a lot of trial and error and of experimentation. Normally for others, the throughput time to arrive at a usable shot is very less when compared to the product shoots. There have been instances with us in product photography, where it has taken up to eight hours or so to arrive at one right shot. Lighting being the most critical aspect when it comes to photography, we end up doing a lot of pre shoot research to know the specifics of how to shoot the particular subject and that way we learn a lot,” says Vamsi. Blue Pintail, Disha Khurma and Yash Tomar
Their company Blue Pintail specialises in food, fashion and wedding photography. They also handle digital marketing and graphic design for companies like Karachi Bakery and Kavanah. We catch up with Disha Khurana and Yash Tomar for a quick chat. “I am really passionate about fashion so I love doing fashion shoots; food comes next. Photography is all about lighting and how you play with light. In a shoot, you change the lighting a little and it gives a whole different look. Recently we did profiling of Nikhil Nanda, the MD of Escorts group. They make tractors and other earth moving equipment and we had to shoot with all this big machinery while also making him look powerful – it was quite an experience. The big challenge is to find the right location and production team. The makeup team, the models and the location are all important but in Hyderabad it’s difficult to find these because people don’t allow us to shoot in some places and we’re not allowed to shoot on the streets. It’s also important to pick the time well so the temperature is okay and the pictures aren’t overexposed. To overcome these challenges, I do lots of research and hard work and have the mood board, props, timings and location ready beforehand,” says Disha. SPECIAL
Shreyans is a top notch photographer and has made a name for himself in the industry but what a lot of people don’t know is he clicks what we think are astounding pictures from a phone camera. Here are some tricks and tips that you can use too! “The first thing to do is understand the lighting – whether you are shooting in natural or artificial lighting and set things up accordingly. The second thing is something we call the Rule of Thirds. Your phone has a grids setting where 9 boxes appear on the camera. Activate that in your settings. The grid makes it easier for you to frame the image and you can make it look more attractive. The third thing is to learn to place your object (or subject) at the right time, in the right lighting and the right place. The fourth, and last, thing is to click an image. The phone cameras right now can click such good quality images that you can put them on magazines and hoardings also. There is also an app called Snapseed where you can edit the brightness and contrast and can remove things that you don’t need in the picture, like you do in Photoshop. Even amateur photographers can edit. All you have to know is how you want your image to look in the end and work accordingly. From there, you can export the image and post it,” he shares. Sarath Shetty
#4
Sarath Shetty is a big name in the industry and is the man behind some stunning fashion shoots. Here he talks about his journey in the field. “When I was in school, I happened to see a photographer and I was fascinated. I looked through lens and it just felt like something new. That’s how I developed interest in photography. Then I learned it as a hobby and took it up after my engineering. The initial journey was tough because there were no guides or even the Internet back then and I had to learn most things on my own. I really enjoy doing fashion photography because I think there is freedom of expression there. There are set rules in other types of photography like landscape photography; fashion photography doesn’t have this. You have clothes, hair, makeup, models, and lighting – so much that you can experiment with. There are so many people today who get inspired to take up photography after seeing things on the Internet. I would suggest that they learn photography properly instead of just learning with trial and error so they can learn basics as well as pros and cons of the trade, otherwise, their careers will be shortlived,” he says. As the name suggests, they specialise in food photography, among other types of photography and have some tips to make your next meal look delicious on Snapchat! “Ensure that the food is well decorated and looks good. Make sure that the light is unidirectional because it gives a light and shadow effect that creates drama. The background should be blurred. The camera angle should be above the food and you can zoom in and adjust the focus. Half the work is taking the picture and the other half is editing it. You can adjust colour and exposure during editing and you can also play around with the lighting,” says Mohit. Naman Pokarna
Naman Pokarna, one of the most sought after photographers in town, tells us about his love for his job. “Photography has been my passion since my college days. I didn’t get an opportunity to follow my instincts and was restricted to join my family business. I had many dreams of getting my marriage captured beautifully but that didn’t happen and I don’t have a single memory of my marriage. So, I decided to follow my dreams and capture the best moments of people and deliver them so that they will cherish those moments for their entire life. Wedding makes a story of tradition, culture, music, prayers, colourful attire and decor, a huge crowd witnessing story of two souls and that has always fascinated me. The millions of feelings in their minds and their natural expressions is what I love to capture. Low light, getting the couples to cooperate, interference from family and guests, and impatience when letting us get the right shot are few major challenges that we face. In spite of all these hurdles we photographers still have to deliver the best output as promised and most often, we do,” he says. Facebook: Naman Pokarna Photography ; Phone: +91 9666661030
Kamal Kiran

Kamal Kiran got into photography by chance. He was a banker who decided he wanted to do something on his own and after a friend gifted him a camera, he started photography. He started shooting weddings and there was no looking back. He shares an interesting anecdote with us. “Weddings can get pretty crazy and I remember this one time, 2 years after I became a photographer, where the pujari forgot the kanyadaanam ceremony! I have a few signature pictures that I take and one of them is the water droplets falling from the groom’s legs as the bride’s parents wash them during kanyadaanam. I thought I missed the shot because the wedding was almost over and so I asked the pujari, who then realised he’d forgotten it altogether! He asked me not to tell anyone, but I had to get my picture so the ceremony was done then. What I enjoy about wedding photography is the amount of happiness and respect I get. Many couples just love me and really want me to come and shoot their weddings. I tried other forms too, like product photography and pictures of buildings and rooms but it’s so technical. I like to capture emotions and that’s what keeps me going. There’s more money in those forms, but if I was looking for money, I’d still be a banker,” he laughs. All about the jewels Jewellery, a very personal element, an indicator of one’s status and style is every woman’s best friend. To add uniqueness to ones look, jewellery is worn.
Mona Shroff
#1
What is jewellery according to you? Jewellery is a major part of a woman’s wardrobe. It adds the special touch, which makes or breaks the complete look for a woman’s attire. Every woman loves jewellerywhether high end fashion or real. When you design jewellery what are the things you keep in mind? I like jewellery that complements universal clothing and is not restricted to a certain kind of clothing. I love to experiment with various materials like semi precious stones, paper mache, Hollywood Actress and Singer over sized pearl/ shells, resin, metals and platings Katherine McPhee to give variety to my collections. My factories are in Brazil , Philippines and Italy. Therefore, plating wearing Mona and finishing are of utmost importance to me as all Shroff’s designs my pieces are HANDMADE which is the USP of my for a cover and centre fold shoot brand. Which is your favourite piece and why? I don’t have any favourite piece as they are all my favourites which are designed and created by me and all the pieces have a history. I only design Statement pieces, which are different and unique. It has to be on the lines of my brand’s slogan - DIFFERENT IS ME! LESS IS MORE! How does it feel to wear something you yourself have designed? I ONLY wear my jewellery and I am proud to wear them as I am the best brand ambassador for my label. How does it feel when you see others wear your work? I feel a sense of satisfaction and contentment when my pieces are adorned and appreciated on the Hollywood and Bollywood magazine covers and the celebrities wearing them at the Oscar Red carpet in 2016 and the Grammys 2017 red carpet. If you have a brunch party what jewellery and accessories will you choose to wear? Huge statement necklace with a cuff or earrings and cuff, depending on the clothing. SPECIAL What is jewellery according to you? I think jewellery is a lot more than just an adornment or style; it defines a person. It tells a story about the person who is wearing it. Jewellery should complement one’s personality and not overshadow them. When you design jewellery what are the things you keep in mind? We blend old and traditional jewellery with new trends to keep up with the timely fads and styles. We like mixing up jewellery from different eras and cultures to make outstanding new pieces that you may not find elsewhere. Which is your favourite piece and why? Well, all my pieces are my favourites as a lot of work goes into designing each and every piece and utmost detail and precision is required. However, this particular piece (inset) stands out the most to me because it is one of the classics. It fuses different cultures and traditions- the combination of emeralds, basara pearls and polkis take us back to the Nizams jewellery while the design looks a lot like the traditional gottapussalu of any typical Telangana family.
How does it feel to wear something you yourself have designed? Every time I wear something I design myself, I feel more confident, more beautiful and stronger. It gives me some kind of power that alters the way I walk and hold myself. How does it feel when you see others wear your work? I feel happy and proud but at the same time I review my own pieces to come back with something better next time. I find faults in my own designs as I would with anybody else’s designs in order to avoid them the next time. If you have a brunch party what jewellery and accessories will you choose to wear? I believe in minimalism I would pick something chic like a choker and pair it with some big hangings or just some hangings with a tikka. What is jewellery according to you? Jewellery is not a piece but it is you, it’s all about yourself. When one wears jewellery she must be confident if not, there is no show. One must be comfortable in what she is wearing and avoid the pokey jewellery. What inspires you? While travelling, I see many things and everything inspires me, be it a flower or any art, textiles even, they create wonderful designs. I outline them and create my designs. Which jewels are your favorites? Well there are many to choose from. I love emerald, basra pearls, gold. How do you feel when you see others wear your work? I am absolutely pleased with the sight. It makes me so happy, I ask people to share their pictures wearing my jewellery. It looks so much better on them than on the tray. Any jewellery piece that has been carried on for years? There is no single design which has been carried on for years. I do not repeat any designs and every piece is one of its kind. What jewellery can one wear for work? Something that is casual and comfortable at the same time. Studded tops, tennis bracelet and a little piece on the neck that does not dazzle. Store address –Krsala store. Radhika Chitalia

What is jewellery according to you? Jewellery reflects who we are and what our taste is like. It speaks a lot about a woman, just like shoes say about a man’s personality. What inspires you? It is my passion. It is about pursuing my passion rather than just doing a task. I love making pieces that allow clients to express themselves, but I also like creating designs that provoke the idea of how jewellery should be worn. Which jewels are your favourites? All the jewels are my favorite. It is very difficult for me to choose one. Tell me about your statement pieces? All the jewellery from JBR (Joules by Radhika) are statement pieces as we believe in one piece per design policy. Also sourcing of raw materials from various countries makes it very difficult to replicate. Specialization in stylish jewellery and semi precious necklaces and earring makes us more popular among our buyers. Knowledge and passion about variety of raw materials and coloured stone jewels that can be sourced from various countries, makes us best seller of handmade jewellery.
How do you feel when you see others wear your work? I love when they appreciate and wear my work but I feel happier when they get compliments from others when they wear my jewellery. My customers have shared such experiences with me which are a morale booster for me and make me feel on top of the world. Any jewellery piece that has been carried on for years? Our “unison” collection, which is wedding jewellery never, goes out of fashion & has been worn by the both mothers & daughters as well. Shop her collection on : www.shopjbr.com

Tell me about your statement pieces Well that would definitely be diamond earrings and conceptual jewellery.
What is jewellery according to you? For every woman it is a reason to smile and an asset. To me it is my passion. What inspires you? Whenever I attended any function or a get together, people often asked about my jewellery and that is how I began my journey as a designer. 78 JUNE, 2017 - TULIP

Maani - By Muskaan Wadhwani
“I am a very nature friendly person and my love for nature is what inspired me to use nature in the product that is most commonly used by all the classes of society. Hence, we came up with the brand “Maani” covering exclusive varieties of clutches and juttis. The idea behind specifically coming up with clutches and juttis is that it is a patent piece of accessory that can perk up any outfit. I get to redefine style and make a statement through my products and that’s what I was looking for when I started this. Initially I was very nervous as it was my first experiment in indulging in fashion as the industry changes in a blink of a eye. But with grace of God, we started getting positive feedback and the frequency of the orders soon took pace. To cut it short, the response is overwhelming. I personally feel online shopping is the pulse of life for the next generation. It’s the best option in the busy schedule that most of us face accommodating vast choices. What’s next: To fulfil the increasing frequency of overseas orders, coming with our own website is next on our list. By doing so we can reach people across the globe and make our brand more easily accessible and available. Eat Travel Splurge
Eat Travel Splurge was created with an idea of two best friends Ashumi & Karishma who had a passion for Travelling Eating and of course Shopping ! Thus the brand was created! “We are still on the early stepping stone of the journey, establishing a brand in today’s market is crucial and a long process .Like every start-up the brand has seen its challenges but we just take it as a learning experience. Our Girl Boss line has had the best response as of now may it be the travel mug, notebook or even the luggage tag. Inspired by that we have come up with a Girl Boss 2.0 edition which too had a great response. We are just starting and have a long way to go! But in the near future making a stronger online presence by collaborating with different websites and marketplaces. The next step after that would be brick and mortar stores. ETS has a long and an exciting journey ahead. The tag line for Eat Travel Splurge is everything we love and that’s exactly what inspires us when it comes to our product line. From notebooks to travel accessories whatever we think we would love to own we create and curate those products.” explains the duo. www.eattravelsplurge.com Instagram: @eattravelsplurge Email: eattravelsplurge@gmail.com
