EDITOR’S DESK October’16 Greetings Readers! This issue is dedicated to something that all Hyderbadis love to the core - Food. Food has been essential part of Hyderabad not just as a source of appetite but as a passion too. The food here is part of the legacy that has been passed through generations of Nizam endowed with rich culture, flavours and heritage. On the cover we have: most celebrated and renowned chefs of Hyderabad who are the people behind the star hotels and the food that makes you come back for more. From every day food to specialised food menus, food festivals to introducing new cuisines they do it all. We took our time to speak a few and know how their journey has been so far, their involvement in major decisions of the property their work for and of course a lot more on their favourite food. like our cover says, the chefs and the foodies, we also have many food bloggers and food lovers sharing their love for food so you better grab something while you eat because this is going to make you really hungry. We also have few very known socialites who were warm enough to share with us their Diwali plans and tell us what they love the most about this festival. we’ve also took up on ourselves to highlight heritage properties and important places that make Hyderabad know for what it is, because we believe Hyderabadis need to know about it as much as the tourists do, this issue we share the story and facts about Golkonda Fort and we will keep coming up with something fascinating every issue. A cozy little place and of-course for your delight you will find the amazing pancakes, waggles and crepes that give you craving all day long. While you make yourself comfortable on their huge couch and enjoy the WIFI on your phone, take a glance at the menu and the delicacies they have to offer. Chocolate Chip Crepes was lip-smacking, soft and tender with a burst of chocolate and chips outside. That is for all the people who have a sweet tooth! It’s exactly what a matte finish means, a polish that’s completely devoid of shine. You can either use Matte nail polish or a matte top coat on your normal nail polish. Matte nails have been trending and are available in brands like OPI and Nyx if you can’t get hands on them then just go ahead and buy it on Indian beauty website Nykka.com Another Failsafe trend (that’s what the Pro’s are calling it) is the glossy lip trend, we’re talking ultra wetlook lacquered lips, paired with shimmering eye shadow to catch the light.

Over a Cappuccino with Suryaveer Singh
T
The beauty of owning your own business is that it gives you the ability to become creative in whatever aspect of joy it brings in. We speak to Suryaveer Singh, a food lover and individual with great ambitions who lives in the moment and enjoys life as it comes. You will spot him easily at the newly opened V Junction, taking time out to personally interact with his guests and obtain feedback. A Restaurateur and a wine sommelier, Suryaveer Singh talks to us about his all new venture, his expertise and journey so far.
Life growing up Well, I was born in Delhi. Dad was always in the hotel, so, we always got to move city to city but we spent big chunk of my life in Hyderabad, where I was educated in Geetanjali and HPS. I went to Calcutta in between, then went to Sri Lanka and just keep seeing a lot of hotels all around me. So, it became quite natural to me that I should join hotels and I said why not? Subsequently, I went to Maldives for a two month program and then it was like working housekeeping, kitchen, room service, and then I realized… wow! It’s actually fun, it’s never a boring day, with hotels. Eventually, I applied for hotel school, went to Switzerland and that was an amazing time where I got to mingle around with people of different nationalities, I got to really learn, experience and travel a lot. I Worked in Bangkok, Los Angles and Bali post that. How did the idea of V Junction come? So, when we first started our company we wanted to mainly be strictly for hotels, but we also saw a certain space for restaurant also to do well, we looked around and when we were looking for a location, we realized that everyone was going towards jubilee hills, hi-tech city but there is still a large chunk of society living in Banjara Hills and around, and they really don’t enjoy going all the way to Jubilee Hills or Gachibowli. We thus wanted to come up with something in Banjara Hills. We found this place which was a bank before and we were thinking of a concept, because the whole Ala cart process is a little too long. People sometime want good food but they want it fast, sometimes they come in a group of 7-8 people, but they don’t have time for everyone to order and wait. So, we decided to offer best of each cuisine, made by expert chef, available in buffet and ala cart and have an outstanding bar as well. Basically we offer everything, we do buffet, ala cart, high tea; something that satisfies all fields and at a good value.
26 OCTOBER, 2016 - TULIP
What do you think is the main essence of V junction? What do you think is the main essence of V junction? V Junction is mainly about style, and good food. We call it junction because it is a junction of different cuisines in one place. Food is our topmost priority over here, but we also have good decor, outstanding view and good location which you don’t find in Banjara Hills to such a large degree. V Junction is all about casual and contemporary dining. Food at V Junction: We offer North Indian, South Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Continental. But month by month we are also looking forward to promote different cuisines like Lebanese, Moroccan just to keep our self interesting. On having specialized Chefs: What we do different is that rather than getting one chef and over pay him to supervise all cuisines, we have specialized chefs for all three cuisines; one for Indian, one oriental and one for continental. We made sure these guys specialize in their fields and we get top quality in all three formats, complementing each item. The response has been really good so far; we are happy because people really love our sushi and butter chicken. On being a Wine sommelier: When I was working in LA, I was just trying to figure out how to be different and at that time a new hire had come who was a trained sommelier, and I was really fascinated with the whole concept of studying about wines and knowing more about it in depth. But then, there was a proper training course going on with ‘Court of Master Sommeliers’ in LA. So, I was one of the few who got a free ride from the hotel and I studied a 3 day course in it. Post that, I had 2 months left in LA for my Visa to expire and someone told me there is another exam coming up for a certified course. I was never the one who worked in a restaurant; I worked in room service
at that point. So, I thought okay. I will just figure out and learn as much I can about wines in these two months and appear for the exam. This exam had people who have been training for 10 years but what I did was, I bought a lot of wine, spend around 2000 dollars on buying different variety of it, and taught myself instead of going for a course. I made my own different way of understanding wines and I think I can write a book on wines for dummies now, because I have simplified it to the extreme and then it started making sense to me. The exam had 3 parts theorypractical and tasting. Theory was one of the toughest exams I have ever given in my life, but somehow I happened to ace all 3 of them. I was among the very few who passed and then I was called to Bali - Four seasons, and at the age of 25 I was a sommelier for 2 resorts; it was a fun experience. Also, when you learn more about wine, you can teach people as well, which I did. We also changed the rules a little bit. When people do wine tastings by the glass they do all the cheapest wine, but we did really expensive wines like ‘Brunello di Montalcino’ ‘Roederer Cristal’. Everyone said you will fail, but we actually proved them wrong. There was particular wine ‘Sauvignon blanc’ which was 200 dollar per bottle and we did that by glass, lot of people disapproved and said it would be a waste but we ended up selling the entire stock of the entire island of 1500 bottles, from that one restaurant. So, I realized even at the age of 25, we could make such difference and changes. It made me realize that we shouldn’t always think about what elders are
saying; if you think what you are doing is right, then, put in the effort and take the risk! For me, it definitely worked out well. Hyderabad lacks the knowledge of wine; they really don’t know what to order or what wine goes with what. So, I aim to start a wine club with V Junction where I will personally educate them not only about the wine but also pairing wine with the right food, because pairing the right beverage with your food just elevates your experience. What part of business are you responsible for? Our company is Trance Hotels; we deal with management of hotels and restaurants. We don’t invest or own them; we run it for people who don’t have enough expertise of it. I handle operations; making sure we are delivering what we are promising. My father is more of the whole umbrella looking after every minute detail and the overall growth of the company. My brother, he handles the sales and marketing aspects of the company. A day in your busy life. Right now I am helping with the restaurant. So, my routine right now is to like wake up around 10 am, come to the restaurant by 10:45 am. I start going through the reservation book, looking at the roaster for the day, making sure everything starts on time, make sure buffet is ready, menus are in shape, the food is in shape, check the back store, conduct the briefing, open for lunch, meet the guests and converse with them . It goes on with meetings, planning strategies, coming up with more promotional

Famously known for Italia, the suave and iconic Italian restaurant that he opened and ran for 10 years at The Park in Bangalore, his work with Antonio Carluccio, one of the biggest names in Italian cuisine, has made him one of the foremost foreign exponents of Cucina Italiana, to the extent that it made Carluccio call him “my extension in the east”. Thereafter I work on the shortlists and help the team curate the menu. When are you happiest at work? When I have great ingredients! Just the sight of fresh greens, vegetables and prime cuts drives me crazy - it gets my mind into overdrive and I enter into a really happy space. How has Hyderabad changed or influenced your food sense/ cooking style? Hyderabad has left me awestruck with its love for its own cuisine. The realization that a 400 year tradition runs deep enough to cause a mutation in the genes is just mind numbing. And I think that’s what makes the city and its people absolutely unique. One international cuisine that you would love to introduce under you? Japanese and I would also dearly love to make Hyderabadi cuisine known internationally. Tell us about your signature dish and the reason why you are proud to call it your signature dish? Out of my many signatures, I love this dish for its clean flavors, the sweet accent of onions and carrot, the ever so slight zing of chilli, and the refreshing tang of lime. And if that’s not enough, add in the brilliant color and the dramatic texture of crisp fried aubergines. This risotto is a celebration in itself. And this one, if from me is with love to all the vegetarians!

My favorite dish is a dessert called Chenna Poda; It’s a classic dessert, and our (the Odia) version of cheese cake, made of cottage cheese (chenna), a bit of semolina and sugar, with a light sprinkling of ground elaichi. It is available mostly in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. Unfortunately, not to be found in Hyderabad and I have been wanting really long to do something about this gap in supply!

Food critic and blogger It is really difficult to choose a single dish because I am a foodie and love to try all kinds of cuisines; but my all time favorite is smoked chicken with flavored rice. This dish is a specialty of Pakistan. The best part of this is the smoky cinnamon flavored rice which is both sour and sweet and gives a distinct taste. The taste of rice which is boiled in the same water as the chicken merges with the juicy chicken and gives a taste like no other.

CUISINE My favorite place to eat and one dish that I absolutely crave at times has got to be Govind’s Dosa. I’ve been having his dosas for almost four years now and they have consistently been delicious. The dollop of butter and especially the podi, which is his secret ingredient, makes it one of the best dishes to relish in the city. And I’ve always felt welcomed when visiting Govind’s Bandi, where he adds one extra cube of butter on seeing me with his trademark smile.

I know that my favorite might turn out to be a bit cliché, but it’s kind of turned out to be my soul food. It’s the simple and uncomplicated Rasam from Simply South. I do eat out a lot, but Simply South is where I go to relax over a nice thali. The food has just the right flavors and it’s the Rasam especially which does wonders for me. It’s tangy, peppery and moreover for a person like me who’s loved South Indian food growing up, Simply South has been the one restaurant which has brought out the nostalgia that I associate with this dish.

I have a sweet tooth and my favorite dessert is Tres Leches. Even though it’s a simple dessert, its creamy milky goodness is what makes me love it so much! It is a light spongy cake soaked in three different types of milk and just melts in the mouth. It originates from Mexico. I’ve had a delicious Tres Leches at Sanchos in Bangalore. In Hyderabad, Hard Rock Cafe used to have a lovely one topped with blueberries and other fruits but that’s not on the menu any more. Habanero also has a good Tres Leches. Autumn Leaf Cafe has a nice version of it although it is a little different as it has a hint of orange to it

CUISINE I love chicken tikka masala because of the burst of flavors I get every time I eat it. The spice mixed with the succulent chicken topped with the perfect balance of tangy tomato cream sauce is definitely my favorite dish. The best part is that it can be eaten with parathas, rotis or just plain rice.

You can get as creative as you want to be with it and it still tastes great.

Thai is one of my favorite cuisines. I love how this cuisine blends the bold flavors of herbs like lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime with the creamy, sweat, and delicate coconut milk. And among the Thai curries, Massaman curry is my favorite. This curry is said to derive its name from the word “Mussulman”, which was used to refer to the Muslim merchants visiting the country in the 17th century. The Massaman curry recipe uses several spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cumin, and cloves that’d be instantly familiar to the Indian palate. The recipe also calls for the use of chunks of potatoes - an ingredient that every Bong has a sweet spot for. The Massaman Curry is a unique potpourri of flavors derived from different cultures.

Being a hard core Punjabi, I would say nothing beats the spice and the variety of Punjabi food. My personal favorites include Chole Bhature, Rajma chawal and hot parathas with black dal makhani. It instantly satiates your taste buds and the cube of butter adds that extra punch to the dish. The buttery flavor intertwined with the various spices melts in your mouth. Accompanied with a tall glass of lassi or butter milk, it’ll just give you the perfect ambience of a Dhaba.

In spite of being a woman from a proper Punjabi house, married into a Rajput house, my palate always craved for South Indian food. Be it idli, sambar, dosa or the delicious coconut chutneySouth Indian cuisine is my all-time-goto food. It is both healthy and simple, yet has so much variety. It sure is a dilemma and it’s difficult to choose only one dish but being in the city of the best delicacies, I believe Biryani would be my top priority. Mutton, chicken or veg - this is a timeless dish which you can never say no to. People from across the world come here just to taste this; which sure is heavenly. I always knew from a very young age that I wanted to create a mark in the fashion industry. I loved the idea of expressing oneself through their personal style without having to speak. Hence, I decided to capitalize on this passion after working as a stylist at The Juice Magazine and completing my studies in the UK and Milan. Gardner Street by Rashi Sanghvi Gardner Street is a whole-leaf premium tea label focused on producing great-tasting, innovative and healthy tea blends for the market. Currently it serves up to 10 flavors of green and herbal teas. “The journey for Gardner Street began in my tiny Boston Apartment while I was pursuing my MBA in Entrepreneurship from Babson College. From a person who had never tasted tea in her life I had become someone who went through 3-4 cups in a day. But these weren’t your regular cups of ‘chai’, instead I had discovered these amazing blends of tea with fruits, flowers and herbs on a spring break to Turkey! This trip had been a complete eye opener with regards to what was possible with tea! I started wondering why India didn’t have these options available in spite of being such a massive tea producing nation. The non-availability of great tasting, good-quality non-milk tea which really had the perfect balance of health and taste in India is what prompted me to start Gardner Street. We’ve had some excellent response so far on the limited platforms that are products are available. Our newly launched Wellness range with the ‘GLOW’ (Skin and Hair), DETOX (Cleansing) and HEAL (Immunity and Sore Throat) has been a runaway hit! Our gifting range has also seen resounding success as an increasing number of people are realizing that there truly is no gift better than the gift of health. We have a number of gifting options tailored for weddings, festive corporate gifting and number of other special occasions. We also go to great lengths to ensure that the gifts have a personal touch and offer various options for personalization. Gardner Street only sources the highest-quality tea and blends it with real herbs, flowers and fruits pieces to make sure every cup of tea is brimming with health and taste. The teas are available either loose or in silken pyramid sachets which do not give out any chemicals when immersed in hot water unlike the regularly available white color bleached paper teabags found in your mass market brands. What’s next: Next up, we are looking at revamping our website to make the shopping process easy and seamless. We are also looking at expanding our product range by adding more varieties of tea and exclusive tea accessories. A gleam of Lights
Diwali, the festival of lights, signifies the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, hope over despair and knowledge over ignorance. There are various legends pointing out the origin of Diwali. This festival is celebrated to honor the return of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana from Lanka and to mark their return from exile of 14 years, the villagers lit up their path with diyas. Diwali also observes the return of Pandavas after 12 years of exile and one year of Agyatavas in Mahabharata. Devotees make offerings to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswati as well. We had a conversation with five families from our city about this festivity. Read on to know more… Mrs. Dimple Agarwal, the vice-president of Global Steel Co. believes that Deepawali is that juncture of the year where her home is grandly lit up with a huge spread of mouthwatering delicacies; a preferably eco-friendly celebration, a tête-à-tête with family and friends and so much more! How do you celebrate this day? Diwali is a grand affair for us. We have a pooja at the factory as well as home. Thereafter, we have a party for friends wherein we play cards, fire crackers & enjoy the festive delicacies. It’s a trend we are following since years. What’s the best part of this festival? The best part about Diwali is the enthusiasm with which everyone celebrates the festival. Everyone is in a festive spirit and it’s a great time to meet and greet family and friends. What is your favorite memory of this gala day? My memories go back to the days when we used to help mom in decorating our home and unwrapping all the Diwali gifts that we used to receive 10 days before Diwali. Altogether, it gave a different kind of an excitement back then. What is the most important element that you can’t avoid? The most important element that we can’t avoid are crackers! My husband loves fire crackers, but, of late he has been avoiding the fireworks because we feel it’s high time we realize that it’s harmful for the environment. Most of us want to safeguard our environment but we can’t contribute our efforts, therefore this is the least we can do. At the end of the day, it’s our responsibility to protect our children from the polluted air. What are the main dishes that are definitely on the plate? We make few sweets at home like kaju barfi, kheer, khoya gujiya & swahili. We also have different kinds of chocolates! What are you wearing for this occasion? Since it’s a festival, I prefer keeping it traditional; as I wear western or indo-western throughout the year. How are you keeping your outfit up to the minute? I’m leaving it to my designer to make my outfit as beautiful as it can be for the celebrations!

We spend the night enjoying fireworks displays, feasting and giving gifts. What’s the best part of this festival? These days everyone is busy with their own lives. A festival like Diwali unites family & friends and a quality time with loved ones is well spent. The best part of this festival is the joy of preparing food at home, when guests arrive to exchange gifts and watching fireworks. We usually make traditional offerings for Diwali which are given as gifts, some dishes like Ponjal, Semiya, Jalebi and Laddu. What is your favorite memory of this gala day? No matter how grown up we are, childhood Diwali will always be special. Diwali used to start by bothering Dad for buying us extra fireworks and of course getting a long lecture later. Laxmi pooja was important, but not for us siblings. And finally, meeting up friends and pitching in our share of fireworks was the greatest joy forever.

The best part of Diwali for me is that we get to meet all our relatives and friends and it’s always so much fun. Diwali gives us the perfect occasion to be with family without any work related chaos. We also have lot of fun with our staff as we take them to a treat, burn crackers and enjoy those little moments of joy. Exchanging gifts & sweets, meeting and greeting neighbors brings a kind of happiness to our hearts. Everybody’s homes are lit with beautiful diyas and all kinds of lanterns, torans and rangolis. I love decorating my house and it’s just like another beautiful world. The entire essence of this heartwarming festival is magnificent. What is your favorite memory of this gala day? Every year we host a Diwali Milan at our place where we invite our family for dinner. On one such occasion when we had all our cousins and extended family in full attendance, we decided to play the old DVD’s and videos of everyone at our wedding ceremonies. It was such a delight to see how each one of us looked like a decade ago. All the elder members of our family recalled their memories too and shared them with us. That was one evening when we couldn’t stop our laughter until cheeks started to hurt and tears of joy rolled down our cheeks. This is one memory I can never forget. What are the main dishes that are definitely on the plate? We prepare Undhiyu, which is a mixed vegetable curry along with methi pakodas. It is believed to bring in good tidings and usher happiness in the family. We also make a variety of sweets and savories like gujiyas, laddus, chakris, mathris, gud papdis etc. What are you wearing for this occasion? On the the day of Diwali, I will be wearing a traditional bandhini saree as we will have poojas for the entire day and as a tradition a married woman is supposed to wear bright bandhini saree as she is considered the lakshmi of the house. How are you keeping your outfit up to the minute? For our get-togethers, I will be wearing a fusion outfit like indowestern clothing. It will be a tube top with a cape in Indian embroidery fabrics and brocade trousers. Capes are in vogue and so I choose to wear one. I prefer it to look ethnic as well as stylish for the purpose of the occasion. My husband is a designer himself, so, I don’t really need to ponder much on this. (laughs) 42 OCTOBER, 2016 - TULIP

How do you celebrate this day? Diwali is one of the most auspicious festivals of our family. What are the main dishes that are definitely on the plate? The immediate answer is sweets and plenty of them! Little morsels are nibbled throughout the day with savory items, from laddoo barfis, halwa to mawa kachori and sohan papdi. It is also customary to exchange decorated boxes of sweets, dry fruits, nuts or silver serving dishes with family and friends. How are you keeping your outfit up to the minute? Keeping it traditional is like holding on to my roots. I would wear a traditional ghagra chowli and to add to that I would pair it with fine jewelry.

Motorized skateboards
As Back to the Future II promised, but self balancing, motorized skateboards make an excellent interim measure. The two-wheeled, battery-powered gadgets let riders glide from place to place, steering by moving their balance ever so slightly. They are addictive, fun and available from the likes of Kaiser Baas and 3VoLV. Riders should ensure they get Australian chargers, however, and look up road rules in their state before riding in public. 46 OCTOBER, 2016 - TULIP

2017. What are your other passions apart from Fitness training? I love adventures. I have been quite adventurous since my childhood! Thanks to my parents. Mountain climbing, Horse riding, River crossing, Rifle shooting are few of my interests. But if there is one thing that is close to heart, it would be Andhra Natyam, A classical form of dance, a potpourri of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi which I learnt from my Guru (my mother D. Vathsalendra). How has the journey been by far? It has been overwhelming, the response that I got from my near and dears, I still get phone calls from people congratulating and motivating me to push myself beyond what I expect I can accomplish. She is an optimistic person who always focuses on the bright side of life. A simple, independent, reliable person who tries to live each day full of positivity. She loves to travel and explore new places, a total cleanliness freak and a good listener. We spoke to her about work, life and balance between the two. “I’m perfectionist and hyper-organized... But sometimes the nature of perfectionism bothers me a lot.“ I feel I am good at controling my emotions and understanding others emotions and feelings as well because I believe being able to manage your emotions is key to your happiness, health as well as your relationships. Tell us about what you do? I feel life is all about connecting and I have been fortunate enough to get the opportunity to meet a lot of people from different walks of life and hear their experiences. It helps me grow and improve as an individual. I have always wanted to be in a career which gives me an opportunity to reach out to people, connect with them while exploring my creative side along. I am content to have a profession in the field of event designing where communication is the main element of success and I enjoy every bit of it. I grew up with an idea of my own Cafe & Restaurant one day and by God’s grace that become reality four months ago when Sawa Reloaded opened its doors for customers. What kind of events do you specialize in? With over a dozen years of experience in the industry, I have been organizing copious events scaling from Private-Social events, Launches & Exhibitions, Marketing & Event PR, PR for Luxury Lifestyle Brands & Consumer Lifestyle Products-Services and Corporate Events How do you balance your personal/ professional/ and social life? Frankly, it’s tough at times but I think I am able to manage it because I follow some principles; I start and end things on time. I always reserve personal time in my schedule for activities that allow me to recharge and that add value, such as daily exercise, time with my daughter and pets, social time with friends, weekly family activities and family vacations. So, by planning things, I am always motivated to direct my time well and eventually, I do not have to cancel on others. Meditation has allowed me to mentally disconnect from everything, it stimulates me to be more creative and frees my mind for new ideas. Tell us about your family: We are a small family, my husband; Amit is a Technologist who manages technology for the financial institutions, my daughter, Shanaya, is 4 years, and our pets Ethan & Thor. We enjoy family time on weekends over movie, good food, leisure long drives and family vacations. One person who really inspires you?
My inspiration is my 4 year old daughter “Shanaya”. She came into my life on 13th Sept and as a result changed my entire outlook on life forever. She is my heart, my soul and my life. My little girl has shown me so much love in four years that I haven’t experienced even in my entire life before her. She spreads sunshine everywhere she goes. She is truly a gift from heaven who taught me to keep trying and never give up, to be more patient even when things are hard. She taught me to love unconditionally. Shanaya is so energetic, passionate & forgiving, she exhibits tremendous amount of positivity in every small act that she does, and it reminds me to give my best in anything that I do. Her passion to want things in her own way keeps reminding me not to think of whether it is feasible or possible instead just wish for it passionately & then start celebrating my success while giving my best. The reason I saw forgiving is because she easily forgives & forget, and it makes us feel happier What are you most passionate about in life? I have a strong attachment towards animals and can spend hours caring and loving them. Earlier I thought, I just love dogs as I always had dogs at home from childhood - till date. But then, as I grew up, I realized that it’s for all animals. I can connect with them easily & that unconditional love they give back in return is one of the best feelings in the world. Do you think events in Hyderabad need more PR/Celeb involvement and zeal? For me, an event is a success when, long afterward, people experience a feeling of joy whilst they remember it and the most successful events are always the ones that leave a long-lasting impression on its audience. For a successful event, it is important to involve PR firms as they are lifeblood of any event and they represent an organization or company as the face that the media sees. Associating celebrities to popularize events is seen as an effective marketing strategy and media Support is very important as they are the most powerful tool of communication today! It helps in promoting the right things at the right time. Detailing to every step in the process is the actual key starting from the way to invitation to reception to actual event & then sending off. Your biggest support that helps you to conquer your dreams every day? I am blessed to have several people in my life that probably believe in me, what I am capable of, and what I can do more. These people have given me their time, knowledge, care and support to help me do my best. Having people who support you, stand behind you, and encourage you along the way is such an important thing. Magnificent
Golconda Golconda Fort Hyderabad is an outstanding example of brilliant engineering and magical architecture. Located at a distance of 11km from the city, it is the most famous of all the sightseeing places in Hyderabad. The name of the fort has been derived from the Telugu words “Golla” and “Konda” which together means ‘Shepherd’s Hill’. Founded in the approximately 12th Century by the Kakatiya Kings, this massive Golconda Fort with walls ranging from 17 to 34 feet, eight gates and 87 bastions, some reaching 60 feet in height, and built on a granite hill that is 400 feet high, it remains one of India’s most magnificent fortress complexes, and was later built by Qutub Shahi Kings.
History
Even before the kingdom of Golconda rose in prominence, the beginning of the fort was thought to be in 1143, when the Kakatiya Dynasty ruled the region. According to legend, a shepherd boy found an idol in the area. When this was reported to the Kakatiyan king, he ordered a mud fort to be built around it. The fort eventually became known as GolKonda, which in Telugu meant Shepherd’s Hill. The area eventually became a heated battleground between three kingdoms, finally culminating in the victory of the Islamic Bahmani Sultanate and the fort became a capital of a major province of the Sultanate. When Quli Qutub Shah declared his independence from the Bahmani Sultanate in 1518, the Qutub Shahi Dynasty arose and Golconda became its seat of power. Over the next couple of decades, successive Qutub Shahi kings expanded the mud fort into a massive and expansive fort of granite, with a circumference that extended to around 5 kilometers. The fort remained to be the dynasty’s capital until it was moved to Hyderabad in 1590. The fort was then expanded to have a 10-kilometer outer wall that enclosed the city. In 1686, the Mughal prince Aurangzeb started to lay siege on the fort of Golconda, with the intent of claiming Hyderabad, the wealthy capital of the Qutub Shahi dynasty. The fortress proved to be as impregnable as its reputation claimed. It wasn’t until the year after, in 1687, when Aurangzeb finally managed to breach the fort after a nine-month long siege. It was said that the fort only fell down because of a traitor who sabotaged the gate. 50 OCTOBER, 2016 - TULIP

This was said to be used for warning the royals in case of an attack. Did you know It is said that Golconda fort used to be a famous diamond market attracting merchants from all over the world. Buzzin’ through Halloween October 31st is marked as the All Hallows Day, widely known as Halloween. This day is dedicated to remembering the dead. The countdown to candy begins on October 30th mid-night which marks the commencement of the ‘Fright Night’ with activities such as, trick-or-treating, decorating, attending Halloween costume parties, carving out pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns and so much more! It’s all about costumes, pumpkins and candy! We got a bunch of youngsters to tell us how are they going to ‘Cast a Spell’ this Halloween and be spooky Every ‘Witch’ way!
Sadaf Hassan
Mass communication student of Roots Business School. October automatically translates to orange-hued leaves, pumpkin spiced lattes and of course, Halloween! Halloween is the perfect excuse for one to reminisce over those very childhood memories and yet again get into that ‘dress-up’ phase, but with a sultry or spooky twist. This year, for Halloween, if I had to choose a costume, I’d probably dress up as Sandra Olsson, better known as Sandy from the 80’s cult film, Grease. The fact that the character is able to carry off wearing an all-black, leather ensemble with bright red heels and succeeded in giving the world a look that would popularly be known as the ‘Grease look’ even after 30 years is truly commendable; not to forget how badass she looks doing so!
PoojaBhageria
A Business student of IBS, Costumes, parties, pumpkins and mountains of sweets! Who doesn’t love Halloween? Every year, all of us wait for this festival which happens to be the best thing since sliced bread. My personal choice would be to adorn the ‘walking dead’ attire. This look has the best of both worlds. It is quick, easy and affordable which requires lesser efforts and produces sublime results. All I need to do is grab some old clothes and tear holes and rips in them. The exposed skin can be covered using fake blood. Some fabric bandaging wrapped around hands and head , splattered with fake blood would add to the appearance. Lastly, I would daub the face in white face paint and powder with a smattering of blood here and there. And I’m good to roll!

Less than 20,000 cars were manufactured within the years 1963-1971 and are popularly known as the “Pagoda” Benz, due to the shape of its hardtop. The first car I ever drove was a W126 Mercedes Benz 300 SD, which is the forefather of the current S class. I plan on finding it back again & restoring it to a mint condition. My first bikes were a Kawasaki eliminator & a 2008 Yamaha R1, riding which was a dream, that I still cherish even today! My current car: The R172 Mercedes Benz SLK 350, always been my favorite, its timeless lines & the similarity to my dream car W113 SL series always caught my fancy. The thing I like the most about it is that it is a practical daily use roadster, taking up rough roads easily; it’s retractable hardtop is a big boon when the weather is good. This is one car which is going to be with me for a long time!” he explains.

Everyone needs a break from their tiring journey of work & pressure in today’s chaotic routine. To relax your senses, we recommend a full body massage therapy to keep your mind calm and refreshed. Thai Sabai Wellness spa is one amongst the best in town to treat you right. While we entered the spa, the atmosphere was very soothing and we were greeted with a warm smile. A serene waterfall themed music was echoing in our ears. Firstly, we were offered a glass of healthy and fresh orange juice that gave us a citrus kick to get started with the entire treatment. Later, we were escorted to the room for the massage service by their therapist who started the session. The muscles and mind started to unwind instantly with the full body massage. We could feel rejuvenated with the entire treatment. The head to toe massage was for about duration of 60 minutes, which was a pure and heavenly experience. Breaking Myths of Nutrition
Breaking Myths of Nutrition
G Revathi, a renowned Senior Nutritionist at Talwalkars gym clears all our doubts on Nutrition and gives us a detail insight into healthy eating habits.
Myth: Eating guava during cough and cold worsens it Fact: Guava is rich in vitamin C and other minerals. It also has other nutrients, which build immunity and therefore, has the ability to help us fight against cough and cold, not cause it. Myth: Avoid Carbohydrate to Lose Weight. Fact: Carbohydrates do not cause weight gain. Low carb diets erroneously state that carbohydrates promote insulin production, which results in weight gain. The truth is that most low carb diets are also calorie restricted. No matter what types of food are eaten, if you decrease your caloric intake by 500 calories per day, you will lose one pound per week. The initial weight loss seen in these diets is caused by the body burning stored glycogen (carbohydrate) for energy, which releases water so the loss is only a water shift and not an actual weight loss. Myth: Avoid Nuts because they are Fattening Fact: Nuts are high in the good fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) and plant sterols, which have been shown to lower
LDL (bad) cholesterol. They are high in calories so should be eaten in moderation, but they do have a place in a healthy diet. Myth: Sugar Causes Diabetes Fact: If you do not have diabetes, sugar intake will not cause you to develop the disease. The main risk factors for type two diabetes are a diet high in calories, being overweight and an inactive lifestyle. If you have diabetes, you need to watch your intake of sugar and carbohydrate. Myth: Calories eaten at night are more fattening than those eaten early in the day: Fact: Calories are calories, and it doesn’t matter what time you eat them. What matters are the total calories you take in! Myth: Eating extra protein build muscle Fact: To build muscle, you must have three key components: adequate calories, a good intake of protein and a good strength program. Without enough calories, some of the dietary proteins will be used as an energy source. Likewise, protein intake beyond your needs will either be stored as fat or burned for energy. aesthetics. One room was converted into a Home theatre and one large kitchen was divided into two kitchens namely dry and wet, to meet their day to day lifestyle routine. From customization based on family’s needs to picking materials, the thought was to achieve a striking balance between minimalism and luxurious opulence, yet to maintain an under stated glamour.
INTERIORS
Materials used: Stones are a wonderful way to spruce up a space. Stone sculptures were clad on the wall to create a peaceful tranquility. Modern materials were used to finish and fabricate the furniture, in combination with stone to give the space a rich and bold urban feel. Granite and grey vitrified tiles are used in combination with composite white marble in common spaces and the master bedroom, whereas wooden flooring has been used in rest of the rooms to functionally distinguish spaces. In its entirety, the materials used, maintains a balance between clean modern lines and rich cultural aura. Lighting: Most of the lighting is brought in through coves, to keep the clean ceiling look seamless. The lighting is left uncomplicated, by highlighting the stone surfaces and in general to leave a relaxed ambience. Challenges: The most challenging aspect was to execute a bold luxurious look without making it boastful. Look & Feel: Beauty in simplicity was the motive. The spaces are visually distinguished by ceiling and flooring pattern, without using actual partition barrier, making the space look larger to its full capacity. Furniture was customized so as to create a clean elegant and not a pompous look.

Tell us the most trending style of decor people prefer in today’s time? The trend today is “less is more”. The focus is one exuberance but with the right amount of statement. Declutter and work with pieces that are the hero of décor. Minimal chic with just the right amount of luxury feel to it. Think subtlest floral, rich textures and earthy hues. What are the big no-no’s while a person is designing his/her home to keep in mind? Refrain from doing too much! Too much of a color, too much of a theme or even too much of a material is a big no. Keep the basic décor chic and subtle and then pop it up with statement accent pieces. Declutter. What are the must-have pieces one can own from Elvy and is your personal favorite? I have always been a connoisseur of handcrafted products and one of our latest collections, the Horn collection is one of my favorite, it includes a whole new range of jewelry boxes, bookends, statement pieces and many more pieces which are handcrafted from high gloss bull horn. Besides this, the dolce collection features hand-blown glass products with a beautiful transparent glaze on ombre colored pieces. Along with decor, the classic nickel plated chafing dishes from Elvy are some of the must-have pieces.
With the Party Scene in the city getting to strict, the entry of stags in any club or lounge almost seems impossible. They are stopped everywhere and are made to stand for hours until they start calling in friends who are girls to help them enjoy the party! A high amount of discrimination is to be seen everywhere and we don’t think there is a party possible without ‘Hens’!

Rule makers and rule breakers, the standard and the extraordinary. Something comes in between each of these to draw that bold line of distinction. That’s Quirkiness! Everyone can do a blue pair of classic jeans and that done-to-death white shirt, or a little black dress for the night out complete with something in pearl, but that’s the point everyone can do it! And believe us, while fashion lives, it would as long as people breathe; there will be those who toe the line and remain neutral, vanilla and unadventurous and they will do good business. But then, stand out are those who step right up in the face of ordinary, give it one tight slap and shake us out of our stationary delirium, making us take notice of what we have been missing. Quirky, unashamed and loud, we hear them, loathe them, then love them, we always did!

Salman Khan will be SHOCKED to hear this artist’s REASON for rejecting Bigg Boss 10!
A few days back, we revealed to you how a renowned cartoonist, motivational speaker and author – KV Gautam REJECTED Salman Khan‘s Bigg Boss 10 coz it wouldn’t fit into his scheme of things. Since then, people have appreciated, criticized and even supported his move over social media. Many people tried to connect with the renowned artiste to know the REAL reason why he said NO to be a part of the popular reality show. And he has finally answered… Last night, he explained his reason to say no through his post on his Facebook wall, which read as, “Thank you all for tons of messages I got in last few days via Whatsapp, Messenger and phone calls! It was also nice to know that I have admirers in other countries too. Many of you wanted to know the reason for my rejection of BIGG BOSS. The main reason is that it will not suit both my public image and personal temperament. I have image of an ‘intellectual type’. The BIGG BOSS label will do big damage to that image. In fact, organizers of a very high profile event cancelled my speech presuming I will go to Bigg Boss. As a matter of fact, the intellectual class has contempt for shows like this. It’s good to be known by everyone. But one should be known for good reasons. I want to be known for my good work, not fighting, politics or stunts done for a TV show.”
Tamannah shooting for item song
After waltzing her way into audience’s hearts as the hot item girl of ‘Rangam’, ‘AlluduSeenu’ and ‘Speedunnodu’, Tamannah was to serenade with Young Tiger NTR in ‘Janatha Garage’, but the song was done by Kajal Aggarwal, eventually. As she awaits the release of ‘Abhinetri’, a big-ticket in which she plays an actress touted to be the next Sridevi, Tamannah is doing an item song opposite Nikhil Kumar for the movie ‘Jaguar’. She is currently shooting for the same at Ramoji Film City. Thaman’s music will ensure that she gets the moves perfect. A much soughtafter actress for item numbers, she is usually paid a bomb for doing one. ‘Jaguar’ will hit the marquee on Oct 6.
ENTERTAINMENT Is Karan Johar repaying debt to Telugu actor?
Early reports suggest that Karan Johar has bought the theatrical release rights of ‘Ghazi’ by paying a fancy price. For the uninitiated, this one is a submarine-based war film starring RanaDaggubati, Tapsee Pannu and Kay Kay Menon in lead roles. A HindiTelugu bilingual, it’s based on ‘Blue Fish’, a book written by the director (Sankalp Reddy) himself. The film is based on the sinking of a Pakistani submarine in 1971 war and is an underwater war film and India’s first submarinebased war film. Based on the real-life incidents related to the unexplained sinking of PNS Ghazi, the film has Tapsee Pannu (the success of ‘Pink’ makes her all the more important) playing a refugee. The relationship between Johar and Rana goes back to many years. It was Rana who brokered the gargantuan ‘Baahubali’ deal between Dharma Productions and SS Rajamouli’s producers. Rana reportedly took the initiative of helping the stakeholders clinch a deal for both the editions of the magnum opus. In the event, ‘The Beginning’ became a run-away hit and fetched good profits for Johar.
Michelle Keegan almost caught up in nasty fight
Michelle Keegan narrowly avoided getting caught up in a nightclub fight over the weekend. The stunning actress, 29, was just finishing up her night at 100 Wardour Club in London with sisterin-law Jess Wright who was celebrating her 31st birthday when a fight broke out. Michelle was just inches away from a man who was getting restrained by two burly bouncers in the doorway of the night spot. Snaps show the star, who was dressed in a leather mini skirt and lace white blouse, turning around to see what the commotion was before quickly making her way down the steps and to safety. It’s not known whether the man was with Michelle and her friends or if he was trying to get to the actress for a sinister reason. But a source at the scene told The Sun Online: “It looked like he was trying something and security was stopping him from either talking or getting a picture.”
Looks like the celebrated director (who waits the release of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’) is repaying the debt to Rana by acquiring ‘Ghazi’ at a fancy price.
hands, ‘held Hiddleston Tom and shared a exchanged numbers pra’ kiss with Priyanka Cho It looks like Tom Hiddleston is putting his Swift romance with Taylor behind him. The Night Manager actor flirted up a storm with Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra at this weekend’s Emmy Awards. And after walking on stage hand-inhand to present an award, it’s been claimed their friendly antics didn’t stop there. Tom and Priyanka talked closely and were holding hands — at one point for a few moments. She fixed Tom’s bow-tie and then they kissed on both cheeks. “Priyanka and Tom said goodbye and she told him she will see him later. They left the event about a minute after each other.” Multiple witnesses saw the pair both “openly flirting with each other” at an after party.
Mo Farah and Rafael Nadal named in latest leak from Fancy Bears hacking group
Mo Farah is the latest British athlete to face scrutiny over his use of socalled therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) after his confidential medical data was leaked online. Farah, the double gold medalist at the 2016 Olympics, is one of eight more British athletes who competed in Rio de Janeiro whose records were released on Monday by the Fancy Bears hacking group, believed to have links to Russia. Helen Glover, Justin Rose and three of the triumphant Great Britain women’s hockey team are among the 26 athletes affected, along with Rafael Nadal, the Spanish 14-times grand slam tennis champion. There were no surprises in the leak of Farah’s data, which confirmed that he had been granted two TUEs over the past eight years. Farah, also under pressure over his links with the controversial coaches Alberto Salazar and Jama Aden, confirmed in the past that he had applied for two legitimate TUEs, although he initially claimed to have had only one. MOVIES Movie Reviews
Pink Cast: Amitabh Bachan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Angad Bedi and Andrea Tariang Director: Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury After the absolutely charming Piku, Shoojit Sircar once again teams up with Amitabh Bachchan but this time for a completely different kind of film. Pink has Sircar as producer and Bachchan playing a lawyer defending three young girls who have been accused of murder. But what’s the actual reality? Are the girls the perpetrators or the victims? A gritty thriller Pink attempts to answer questions pertinent to the society. Pink addresses some grave issues like women safety in the capital city and that how Power overrules court judgments. Right from the trailer, the film has been generating a lot of curiosity. The only song in the film, Kaari Kaari Raina, is used effectively to encapsulate the mood and messages in the film. Overall, Pink is an evocative film about women, brimming with messages relevant for society, and keeps you riveted to the screen. Sully Cast: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney Director: Clint Eastwood SULLY is based on the true story of a US Airways flight that did a controlled water landing in the Hudson River on January 15, 2009. The flight was piloted by Captain Sullenberger, affectionately known as Sully, played here by Everyman Tom Hanks. It’s directed by Clint Eastwood and co-stars Aaron Eckhart. A movie like this could have gone in two directions. It easily could have become a bit of a sensationalistic disaster movie causing the audience to rethink ever boarding a plane without Sully at the helm. Instead, it was handled more deftly and uniquely as the story of a man who was thrust into the spotlight for a single decision at the end of 42 years of flight experience. That said, there’s no doubt that this movie is solely and completely about Sully and his actions. The bits of humanity that are injected into the passengers are the weakest point in the story. There’s a great scene of Tom Hanks’ Sully talking to his wife on the phone and questioning if he did the right thing in landing on the Hudson. It’s shot with half of his face in shadow, a great bit of cinematography and direction showing exactly what he’s going through at that moment. In fact, the entire movie is well done. Janatha Garage Cast: Jr NTR, Mohanlal, Nithya Menen, Samantha Ruth Prabhu Director: Koratala Siva The motto of director Koratala Siva’s Janatha Garage is that ‘everything gets repaired here’, but even the best in business can’t save this movie from the fatal damage caused by blindly following the great Indian masala formula. The movie is nothing but a pathetic adaptation of Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar, with a lot of color and commercial elements added. Resettled in Hyderabad, a mechanic named Satyam (Mohanlal) becomes a valve of hope for people denied justice. Whoever approaches Janatha Garage with a grievance will be served justice through a task force comprising Sathyam and his group of mechanics. Years later, Anand (Jr NTR) rejoins his father’s family and becomes the head of Janatha Garage. The film is a usual south Indian mix of family drama, obvious villains, love affair, objectification of female body through item songs and unreal stunt sequences, all stitched together mechanically. The only good thing about the movie is that a mass hero like Jr NTR is depicted as an environmentalist who rages upon any act destroying the ecosystem.

America’s First Daughter
(Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie) America’s First Daughter, written by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie, is the story of Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson. Dray and Kamoie put a lot of research and time into this novel, using the subject matter of many letters and original sources to tell the tale of Patsy’s devotion to her father. Written in Patsy’s perspective, this book gives us a unique look into one of America’s founding fathers, and the legacy he and his family shaped for themselves. After a promise she makes to her mother on her deathbed, Patsy follows her father when he is appointed the American minister to France. In this enchanting country, Patsy learns the ins and outs of politics. She also learns of her father’s relationship with Sally, a slave her own age. While trying to take care of her father and herself, she finds herself falling in love with William Short, Thomas Jefferson’s protégé. Torn between love and the promise she made to her mother, Patsy must decide whether or not she can be William’s wife and a devoted daughter. This choice is the catalyst that shapes the rest of her life. How far will Patsy go to protect the legacy that her father has built? And will she ever truly be happy being America’s First Daughter? This book makes one happy, reading the Jeffersons’ story. It makes you laugh and cry and makes you roll pages in disgust. It is a very well-written book, and the stylistic choices paid homage to the time period this book was written about, while also making sure that it was understandable to the readers of our time period. This book is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys accurate Historical fiction.
What is Not Yours is Not Yours (Helen Oyeyemi)
A restless imagination harnessed to a smooth and propulsive prose style — Helen Oyeyemi’s fiction is a juggernaut, and she breaks for no one. Her sentences have an elegance often set off by jolts of contemporary vernacular. “He was handsome but the scent of his cologne was one she very strongly associated with loan sharks,” she writes in “Drownings,” a story in her new collection, What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours. This is her first batch of stories, and like most of her work it partakes promiscuously of mythology, fairy tale, and folklore without turning a blind eye to the modern perversities of smartphones, YouTube celebrities, and electronic cigarettes. The book has nine stories, though the number is misleading: Each is a nest of fictions within fictions. It’s tempting to argue that Oyeyemi’s stories succeed when she maintains a constant grip on the reader’s attention, but it wouldn’t be accurate. “Drownings” has too much action and too many characters to keep track of. One story, “Presence,” has a veneer of domestic psychological realism but turns creepily and satisfyingly into a science-¬fiction ghost story, something like Solaris except set in the leafier sections of London. Oyeyemi’s quieter mode points up the deliberate way she opens her other stories to something close to narrative chaos. The quieter final third of What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours includes a slight comic retelling of the “Little Red Riding Hood” tale. There are enough recurrences to suggest a larger design submerged beneath all the hectic storytelling and the appealingly blunt title points to obvious themes of deprivation and abundance, possession and loss, authenticity and appropriation. Oyeyemi is a prodigious and idiosyncratic talent finding her form in public, and What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours is something more interesting than a flawless or coherent book.
Wink Poppy Midnight (April Genevieve Tucholke)
April Genevieve Tucholke’s Wink Poppy Midnight, appears superficially fairly simple: It’s about a boy moving away from the influence of a bullying girl to a creaking farmhouse on the edge of town, finding himself next door to a quirky, strange, and loving family that welcomes him in without hesitation. Midnight is a high school student who’s long been in love with Poppy, the beautiful and blonde popular girl who makes a habit of bullying and draws out a relationship with Midnight, using and abusing him at her leisure. Poppy is the girl who sees herself and kind of hates herself, but chooses to be nasty anyway, living the dream that every bully lives as she surrounds herself with sycophants and charges through the world heedless to the welfare of the people she’s struggling to relate to. Wink is the girl next door, the wild, carefree redhead who introduces Midnight to a world where he isn’t dominated by Poppy’s inevitable social control. Each of them tells their own part of the story. Wink Poppy Midnight manages to hit the transcendent note, drawing readers in and holding them there. It’s a very fast-paced read and it’s also a quick one that can be relatively easily completed at a single sitting, which is good, because you will probably want to finish it at a single sitting. Otherwise, you may find yourself distracted by thoughts of the book at inopportune moments, wanting to dip back into the world of Wink Poppy Midnight to figure out what in the hell is going on while also enjoying the rich, deep landscape that Tucholke manages to paint.

Forecast For
TAROT
October 2016 - Tarot reading by Nupur Heda Patil
LIBRA
(born September 23 - October 22) October is the month for honoring the relationships you have developed with loved ones and family members. It’s a month for rejoicing and celebrating whether this means planning for a party or special event, or getting yourself out of the doldrums and washing away the blues. Angels will make sure life turns it into something tangible, solid and lasting. It represents a joyous celebration, such as a marriage, a promotion, the birth of a child. The cards say that “this is only the beginning” of something you’ve already established and that it’s bound to just keep getting better. You may be planning a special event one which will be way more fun than you are anticipating. You are likely to meet people, have fun, put your worries aside and focus instead on the promise of friendship, companionship and socializing.
SCORPIO
(born October 23 - November 21) Take some time this month to think about what makes you unique and what skills you and you alone possess. Every one of us has something that we’re so passionate about and properly channeled, this can become your calling. It’s all about making the best and most powerful use of that thing that makes you YOU. Like the Magician in the tarot deck, you’ll want to remember that all of your resources are right there at your disposal, and will only need to be accessed in order for you to create something “magic.” Your enthusiasm is aroused. A burst of energy gives you new ego strength. Protect against quarrel or injury. Exercise extra caution with fire, machinery and sharp objects. Channel impulsiveness. Be appropriately assertive.
SAGITTARIUS
(born November 22 - December 21) What do you do when you find yourself mulling over what you want to do in a situation when one part knows what you want and the other
part does not? Usually you find yourself getting pulled back into the situation going against all the logic you have used in getting away from it in the first place. Sometimes you may feel like just sitting back and doing nothing, sometimes you feel like going with the flow, and other times you want to get up and take a stand. Wait for the right time for any important decision. Only you will know what is right for you when the time comes. The Angels can act as a barrier, preventing you from moving until you’re clear on the direction you want to go. Take some time this month to think about the options before you.
CAPRICORN
(born December 22 - January 19) You may need to be extra gentle with yourself this month, and tend to your own needs with the same loving care that you’re used to doling out to others. You may be putting on a brave face as you tackle things that frighten you this month, or that take you outside of your comfort zone. You’re cycling through a period where you can enjoy more give and take with people. It’s a good time for the good times. Enjoy the company of friends. Conditions are ideal to improve your love life by being nicer to yourself and to everyone around you. It will pay off to be socially agreeable. You’re cycling through a new period of first impressions. Allow yourself to be more of a social mixer. Pleasure yourself and others through the cultivation of your creative powers. Love at first sight is now possible.
AQUARIUS
(born January 20 - February 18) This month you may find yourself surrounded by friends and loved ones and reminiscing about the past. Whether you’re physically with those who are near and dear or just revisiting them in your memories, you’re likely to taking a trip down memory lane. You may be missing someone, longing for the comforts and companions that have gone by the wayside over time. You could also hear from an old friend unexpectedly today. Someone who’s been on your mind and who reaches out across the TULIP - OCTOBER, 2016 77

miles, reminding you of long-forgotten events that come rushing back in a wave of nostalgia. You may also feel the urge to reach out to those who remind you of life’s simpler pleasures, such as a family member or a childhood friend. And if you’re lucky enough to be surrounded by loved ones, you should have no problem recapturing those memories.
PISCES
(born February 19 - March 20) You may feel like you’re being pulled in two different directions this month, or you may be struggling with an important decisions that have been weighing heavily on your mind, that’s more likely a result of your own indecision. Sometimes this is due to fear: “What if I make the wrong decision?” But it’s just as often related to a desire to not have to choose at all. While you don’t want to let yourself be swayed by external desires or distractions, you also can’t allow your own uncertainty to prevent you from taking a stand. You want to weigh your decisions carefully, knowing that they can have far-reaching repercussions. While you may have to sit back and consider your options carefully, in the end you’ll have to decide and then abide by your decisions.
ARIES
(born Mar. 21 - April 19) This month you may need to think about your own limitations, and how you’ve contributed to the obstacles that stand between you and your goals. The Cards speaks of self-imposed obstacles and restrictions. You may feel powerless in your current circumstances and may be so caught up in blaming the people or events that have brought you to this that you’re unable to see a way out. You may feel like you’re beating your head against a wall or like all of your efforts are being met with resistance. You may question whether the Universe is telling you to fight or to accept defeat although neither of these is going to be the right course of action. Simply opening your eyes, changing your perspective and finding a workable solution is the deal cracker for you.
TAURUS
(born April 20 - May 20) You’re feeling more willful and confident than usual now. It’s a month for intellectual work. Your thinking is extra clear. Make the most of it. Initiate some calls. Write some notes and letters. Send some e-mail. You can make a forceful public presentation. Enjoy some commerce. Take three deep breaths and think deep thoughts. Find a new focus. You are the star. Communicate. People will be extra receptive to your ideas now. Travel is indicated. You’re in the mood for some fun. Treat yourself to the very best, you deserve it. The month should be quite pleasant and easy to deal with. You can do something creative and pleasing for yourself.
GEMINI
(born May 21 - June 20) You might experience this first hand on the job or in a stressful relationship or even in your own head. If you’ve been giving of your
time, energy, money, affection until you find you have nothing left to give. You may be questioning whether something is worth putting more effort and energy into such as a job, a relationship, or a business venture that’s not paying off or whether it’s time to throw in the towel. You may also feel like you’re carrying “extra baggage,” whether this refers to your own struggles or those of someone else. You may have taken on someone else’s problems, rather than letting them iron them out themselves. The weight of responsibilities you’ve taken on may seem like a heavy load too heavy in fact for just one person to carry. The Angel says it’s time to lighten your load. Get rid of what is no longer worth holding onto, and work on salvaging what’s left.
CANCER
(born June 21 - July 22) You may be called upon to lay down the law this month or exert your influence and authority over others. You may need to learn to wield your own authority over others, at home or in the workplace. Or you may need to work on standing up for yourself, against an oppressive régime. The cards in the reading can also represent a state of mind as in displaying confidence and problem solving skills that draw people to you and elevates you in their eyes. And can represent an event such as a promotion or recognition from your peers. However it appears for you this month, see it as an indication that it’s time to step and start exerting your own influence. It may be time for you to pick up your own mighty club and show the rest of the world what you’re made of.
LEO
(born July 23 - August 22) This is the month for being strategic and thinking about the choices you have to make as you plan your next move. You may be wavering over important decisions. You may be weighing your options or figuring out what your best course of action may be. If it takes you a little while to get your bearings this month and to make an informed decision, know that there’s a reason for holding back. You want to be decisive, fair and just. So make sure you have all the facts before you jump to any conclusions. You can make successful moves. You need time to think things through. You might not accomplish all that you want to at home this month. Uncertainties regarding your home and family are evident.
VIRGO
(born August 23 - September 22) This month is about taking care of yourself as well as others and if there has been any imbalance between the two lately then it’s time to take a look at that. If you’re so caught up in business or social affairs that you don’t have time for one-on-one with those who matter most, it’s time to take a second look at what’s most important to you. You can stabilize your personal relationship if you’re willing to communicate honestly. You can make money, but try not to let it slip through your fingers. Don’t push your luck with authority. Be innovative.
