A compilation of things we are obsessed about this month

Dare to visit- Chinas glass skyways A new glass walkway opened to the public in China. The terrifying walkway spans 100 meters along the side of Tianmen Mountain in Hunan’s Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Brave visitors have dared to walk on the glass pathway, looking down at the scenes below from 4,600 feet in the air. Tourists cling to the rails not looking down while others take in the sights and pose for extreme selfies. Though the experience can be frightening for many visitors, the views are certainly spectacular.

Gone Viral: Kylie cosmetics

In honor of her upcoming 19th birthday, Kylie Jenner announced a special “birthday edition” Kylie Cosmetics collection which includes a mini set of five of Jenner’s previous matte lipsticks: Dolce, Exposed, Candy, KoKo, and Kristen. It also includes a version of her new matte lipstick, Leo—a deep burgundy. There’s also a new gloss and a Metal Matte Lipstick; Poppin is a shiny gold gloss and Lord is a deep gold metallic lipstick. But, the most exciting releases in this collection are Jenner’s first-ever eyeliner, called Kyliner (naturally), and a cream eye shadow, Crème Shadow, in two shades: Copper and Rose Gold. The Kyliner is something of an eyeliner kit, with the deep bronze color available in pencil and gel form. **The Bag was a limited edition for her birthday but the collection is still available individually on the website. https:// www.kyliecosmetics.com/

Deepika Reddy

S

She is a very family oriented person, Independent yet very attached to the people she loves; Deepika believes in hard work and the importance of striking a balance between the two.

Tell us a little about how the idea of Almari came to you? Almari is very close to my heart. Its concept emerged when I had returned to India after studying abroad. I noticed that Hyderabad didn’t have proper high street brands or local stores catering to young girls or women with contemporary aesthetics. Also, there was a huge lack of variety and the availability of Pret wear. This led to the conceptualization of the Almari trunk show and finally the store. I can confidently say that the store is on par with the best stores in the country in terms of citations, quality and ambience. How has the journey been by far? The journey has been amazing. There has been a lot of support, encouragement and growth. It’s only getting bigger and better. 20 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

I love watching movies whenever I get the time. I love food and so trying new restaurants is something I quite enjoy. How do you manage your work and personal life? I think learning to prioritize is the key to balancing work and personal life. Tell us something about your family? My family is amazing. I have the most wonderful parents and a younger brother. They are always protective and are my support pillars; no matter the situation. How is your usual day at work? I never have a typical work day. Each day is different. Some days i don’t have time to breathe, some days are easy and some days are just perfect. What is next for Almari? Almari is expanding. We’re opening a second store which will be exclusively for men with a great variety of Pret wear.

TEA-ERA Sip A Cup Of Freshness

R. K. Tea Corporation was founded 5 years ago for manufacturing and packaging of green teas by Abhishek Agarwal. Later on his sister Aditi Agarwal joined in as the creative and marketing head, making the company more versatile. Over the period, they have brought in various types of teas and styles of packaging under its umbrella. Apart from dealing with innovative tea concepts, they are also into exports, private labeling, and concept gifting of specialty

Tea is one of life’s simple pleasures. They begin with India’s finest tea leaves, then artfully blend them with herbs, spices and botanicals to create unexpectedly rich, truly memorable experiences. Their latest brand Tea-Era, the first and only of its kinds is the most convenient product for brewing a cup of tea because the need to filter the leaves after infusing them is eliminated, which makes it very quick and easy. It’s hygienic and disposable. Also the flavors are unique and 100% natural. R K has a host of tea products under its strategically placed brands, ranging from basic chai to specialty blends. We have regular teas (black, green, white, and oolong), ice teas, herbal teas, instant tea premixes, and instant tea cups, all in regular and exclusive flavors, alongside export quality teas.

Indian and herbal teas. It is a house of luxury Indian teas and a one stop shop for all tea lovers Since the time of initiation, their motto and the main idea has always been- INNOVATION and to make the tea experience more luxurious, enjoyable, comfortable and yet affordable. “Tea - Era is a startup and the latest brand in RK’s kitty. It seeds from a thought that my friends and I had, while trying to figure out what could be more convenient than tea bags. It then developed into an idea with a vision to simplify the process of making tea whilst bringing in various new flavors. It’s been very challenging yet a wonderful learning experience. The world of tea amazes me and is truly mesmerizing. The deeper you dig the more fascinating it gets. There is so much more to tea than just a morning cup, which I realized over time! I think the journey has just begun! The Era of Tea is now...” she adds

24 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

Few of their most loved teas are; spicy masala, chatpat chai, holy basil, silver needle gourmet white tea and strawberry green tea. Tea-era buyers take regular trips to origin states to taste and select the finest-quality tea and botanicals available. Unlike other large tea companies that use pre-blended teas sourced at origin, Tea-era buys only unblended teas. Th is allows them to acquire tea at its peak of freshness and to exercise greater control over the quality of the final blend. Tea-era is then manufactured at their Unit in Hyderabad QUALITY AND SHELF LIFE OF THESE PRODUCTSWhen it comes to selecting the besttasting teas, we listen to the leaves. Once a tea is plucked and processed, freshness and quality is preserved by ensuring that all teas and ingredients are properly handled and stored. To ensure you get the best tea possible, we check all the teas that go into the Tea-era blend at least three times before it reaches the consumers.

Honestly, the tea never goes bad if it’s stored properly under good conditions. But, we still prefer that it is consumed within a year from its packing.

WHATS NEXT: A couple of innovations in tea under new brands are lined up for 2017 and hopefully if our joint ventures and associations are established, by the year end we might have over 150 varieties of teas from India and across the world. Buy yourself some Tea love from: www.tea-era.com Ph: 9885888892, 40101087/89 Email – orders@tea-era.com It can also be ordered online on Ebay, Amazon, Snapdeal and Shopclues. We will soon be available on other marketplaces like flipkart & Paytm as well. Address: R. K. Tea Corporation, 1-832/47, S.S. Villa, Bapu Bagh Colony, P.G. Road, Opposite Ohri’s Restaurant, Secunderabad. 500003.

Kanabis by Devika Srimal Bapna

FASHION

As an animal lover and PETA volunteer, I decided to give up leather a few years back. My heart ached upon knowing how leather is made. As statistics go, India produces one billion pairs of leather shoes every year for consumption and export, and the hide from one cow produces 18 pairs of shoes. This means 50 million cows are slaughtered for shoes! With this knowledge, I pledged never to wear leather again but consequently, had a tough time finding good non-leather shoes that were stylish, good quality and affordable. You could say that it was almost a light-bulb moment when I thought ‘what the heck, I should start my own brand!’ And that’s how KANABIS was born - a brand for fashionable, affordable, high quality and PETA-approved vegan footwear. The name is a play on the word cannabis (aka marijuana!) since we use a lot of canvas instead of leather in our shoes, and canvas was historically made from hemp, which came from cannabis. Our shoes are tastefully crafted, with a careful mix of fabrics for the right look and comfort, thanks to our creative head Anshul Tyagi, who does a fantastic job with the product design! In April this year, we turned one. We have done 35 exhibitions and trunk shows till date and have received a phenomenal response at these events. Perhaps, we are (almost always) the only brand in the “cool western casual” and vegan shoe category. On a more personal note, we foresee a rising consciousness against animal cruelty and as more brands and celebrities start promoting animal friendly fashion, awareness and demand are bound to go up. We are excited to ride that high wave! Our strategy is to bring something new every season and expand our offering. We are working on increasing our online and offline visibility to acquire new customers and earn their loyalty so they keep coming back for a new pair of KANABIS. We value our customer feedback immensely and aim to provide excellent service/experience, on top of those good-looking pair of shoes Shop: http://www.kanabis.in/

I have always wanted to have my own business or brand. Being an MBA graduate made it a step easier. As I was, and still am passionate and crazy about footwear and bags; this gave me an idea of having my own footwear brand! So, here I am having my footwear brand which has an Indian touch and a lot of emphasis on detailing which promotes Indian embroidery. The response so far has been fabulous. Not just for our collection but also for the customized bridal footwear! Brides from all over India are giving order for their customized bridal juttis or kolhapuris and even sets that we offer of matching footwear and clutches/bags. My main USP is that my products are 100% custom made, fresh and creative designs. These are all handmade. Every piece is different from other and what I make is unique, from designs to hand work everything is done with lot of expertise and effort. Online shopping has made it easy to reach out to masses. Paio Shoes by Shweta Nimkar

“Footwear has always been a passion for me. I started designing footwear back in my first year of college as a hobby. Over the course of three years, I had over hundreds of shoe designs. Having always wanted to build on this passion, when the time came to choose a profession, shoe designing was the only choice. When I started PAIO, the idea was to have a wide variety of flat shoes such as ballets, slip on’s, sandals, oxfords in quirky, funky designs. However, soon into the business, we started to receive several queries from our customers for custom made shoes. We initially began customizing shoes for family and friends, learned how to make adjustments to our craftsmanship and then introduced this concept to all our customers. When we introduced customization, initially people were a bit apprehensive. How do you decide on the design, how do you pick the material? How do you wait for 10 days, etc.? So, we simplified the process for them. We made hundreds of different design samples for them to select from. We developed a swatch book with over 700 material and color options. We guided them through the process and did our best to make the most comfortable, unique shoes for them. In just a span of 6 months, we had over 600 custom orders from clients all through events and exhibitions. When online shopping initially came to India, people were very apprehensive. They were not sure of the quality of the product, the hassles of returns, payments etc. However, thanks to major portals and brands combined, people are extremely comfortable ordering everything online - from books, to stationery, clothing, footwear even groceries. With respect to footwear, the trick is to make sure your sizing is perfect. Since India doesn’t have a standard shoe size chart, it is preferable to refer to the size chart of each brand. However, if it is done correctly, and customers choose their size as per the chart, there should never be any hassle with respect to the footwear sizes. We will be launching our website on 5th August. The specialty of this site is that it will allow all customers to design their shoes online. The software allows everyone to customize and design their shoes from the type of shoe, to its heel height, to the accessory and even the material. You can then place an order for the shoe and have your custom shoe delivered to you in the next 10 days! Shop on: www.paio.co

Her love for shoes and bags and the realization that there was a lacuna in the market for stylish footwear that lacked quality and comfort, led her to create her own collection. She amalgamated her experience with her ideas to create a fusion of International styling and Indian ethnic designs, catering to the New-Age Indian Woman and thus Crimzon was born. The accessory line has been widely accepted in the International and Indian markets. Crimzon is available internationally in Dubai, Kuwait, Lagos, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and New York. Osca Donna by Jasmine Kochar & Karan Vats

FASHION

“The idea behind OSCA Donna was conceived in 2013. We wanted to introduce handcrafted genuine leather footwear to the Indian market, a concept highly respected and prevalent in Italy. There is a certain charm and authenticity to the workmanship when each pair is made with utmost care and dedication. Shoe making is a form of art and we want to revive its essence through our designs. Since the launch in June 2014, we have received an extremely positive and encouraging response from our customers. They have praised the quality as well as admired the aesthetics. For us, quality will always precede quantity. All our styles are made to order and every style has its own identity & individuality. We strive to learn & improvise continuously. Our aim is to always bring something new and exciting in our collection by experimenting with different materials, textures and techniques. E-com portals have been really helpful for upcoming brands/labels to reach a wider customer base and vice versa. We are no longer limited to Tier 1 or Tier 2 cities or even just our country for that matter. We ship orders Pan India as well as globally. We are currently working on our festive/ wedding collection which will be ready to launch in September. Along with ready to wear styles, we will also provide customizable options to match the customers’ outfits. There are a couple of other projects in the pipeline for 2017 where we will focus on expansion of categories & product range along with placement in retail stores. Shop on: www.oscastore.com

Organic Mill by Shreni Kashyeb Organic mill wants to be your everyday skincare brand; the brand you turn to when you want your skin to be reenergized. We hope to be the long term solution to all your skincare needs and make sure you never visit a dermatologist again. I’ve suffered from acne since I was a kid and every dermatologist I went to gave me an array of products which worked in the short term but wasn’t sustainable in the long term. I slowly started making products at home with local ingredients, the recipes were derived from various books but, all these products were initially just for me and my family. Eventually my friends started ordering for them and then one thing led to another and here I am. We had an incredible response after launching our brand, since people these days are starting to move back to the roots and unlike other brands, our products do not go through any machine process. These products are handmade and especially curated for our customers in small batches. Our aim is to provide this current generation with a constant supply of homemade products that reenergizes their skin. Convenience is the biggest perk. You don’t have to leave your house to get your monthly supply of products or groceries; it’s honestly the best thing that has happened to me. It also cuts down our overheads drastically which leads to better prices for consumers. What’s next: We have an exhibition on the 8th & 9th of September at Amethyst café, Chennai. We are soon starting international shipping and expanding our business in the international market too. As of now, we have face washes, cleansers, foot soaks, scrubs, gourmet soaps and toners in store. We will be introducing new products soon and a separate range of products for babies too that are completely safe and natural to use. Baise Gaba

By Reena Kakralia & Ruchi Kakralia Baise Gaba, is derived from the Marwari dialect which means traditional clothing. Baise Gaba was born in their minds way before it came into existence; two sisters with totally different ideologies but one common love - fashion came together to turn their dreams into reality. Reena and Ruchi took their formal education in varied genres. Reena Kakralia Ghasil holds a degree in Animations from Coventry University, London whereas; Ruchi is a graduate in accessory and life style design from NIFT Hyderabad. The life was moving on at its own pace; school, higher education, and then job. But, their common love could not stay passive for long. They quit their jobs and eventually came up with this idea of having to present their love to the world. They started with making beautiful attires for friends and family and after getting the much needed motivation and well deserved appreciation, Baise Gaba was born. “We were never quite satisfied with whatever we bought. So, we were always keen on changing the look and feel of things. Cutting them out, painting, doing mix and match! Gradually this casual exercise, turned into passion. We started designing clothes for ourselves; even altered the old ones. We got tremendous appreciation from people around and that’s what motivated us to launch our own label. The response has been encouraging all through. We have gathered lot of appreciation and admiration. We are obliged to have got such positive reviews for our products in such a short duration. The response has been a source of immense motivation for us to keep working for nothing but the best. We truly believe that quality can never be superseded by any other factor. Right from choosing the color palate to making use of the fine fabrics, Baise Gaba does not compromise on any component. Our colors are subtle and the fabrics are smooth- simply to make you fall in love.” What’s next: Our next step is to launch our website. We would continue designing new and innovative collections in future and our aim is to cross the boundaries and start selling our products overseas as well. Presenting our collection in prestigious Fashion Shows of the country is also on our to-do list. TREND Vegan living is a set of choices stemming from a simple logic: Every sentient being – human or not – deserves not to be hurt. Thus, a vegan avoids all animal products/use: Milk & its products (milk, paneer, cheese, ghee, butter, curd, etc.), meat, eggs, honey (substituting them with their plant-based versions for taste, if desired), wool, leather, fur, pearl, silk, circuses, zoos, etc. Vegans refrain from animal-tested products too, to the extent possible. Veganism is a win-win-win, in terms of ethics, environmental sustainability and human health. You must have come across the most hyped VEGAN TREND. Basically this is not a trend but it’s a form of diet, which believes in using only organic products and skipping all the types of animal products.

TURNING VEGAN Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as, is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. A vegan diet is richly diverse and comprises all kinds of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds, beans and pulses - all of which can be prepared in endless combinations that will ensure you’re never bored. From curry to cake, pastries to pizzas, all your favorite things can be suitable for a vegan diet if they’re made with plant-based ingredients. Vegans are strict vegetarians.

44 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

Pros - An improved health potential - Vegans are at reduced risk of serious illness. - There are alternative sources of B-12, one of those important nutrients. - It’s getting easier and easier to buy plant proteins. - Vegan diets are cholesterol free - Veganism is more environmentally sustainable. - A vegan diet is full of antioxidants - A lifestyle choice

Cons - Sticking to a strict diet - But basing your diet on activism can lead you to make poor decisions about your health. - Potential vitamin and mineral loss - Relying on pulses for protein can bring on…discomfort. - Lack of protein - Excessive weight loss can become weight gain.

Place in a blender with the other ingredients and process to a smooth but very slightly grainy paste. Add very little water at a time. The batter should be fairly thin and runny if you want thin dosas. For thicker dosas, make it the consistency of regular pancake batter. Let the batter stand overnight or for 8 hours. Heat a griddle. When hot, pour about ½ cup of the batter in the center. If your batter is quite thin, it will spread into a round on its own. If thick, help along with the ladle to create a round. Let the dosa cook until bubbles appear all over. Spray or pour a few drops of oil around the edges of the dosa to crisp up the edges and help it release from the pan. When the bottom is golden brown, flip over and cook for about 30 seconds more. Serve hot with some mint chutney.

A well-balanced, calorie controlled, plant-based diet is the vegan diet. You can start going vegan for how many days or months you like but you have to avoid all the animal based food products. I tried going vegan for a week. The starting days were damn hard because when I’m out I don’t check what I’m buying. So, it was hard to see if the products I loved were 100% Vegan. I would suggest this diet to the person who wants to lose those extra ponds off their body as I found 1 kg reduction in those 7 days. Lastly, this diet requires a lot of hard work as we need to find the right substitute for the body. But, can be done with proper diet-planning. Khaja Uzair-Ul-Hassan

First advice I can give you on turning vegan is THIS IS NOT EASY. I tried being vegan for a week and I must tell you this was so hard GODDDDD. Basically, we have to avoid all the dairy products and meat etc. I heard that Beyonce too tried this diet. I don’t know how people can do it because I’m a complete meat lover. I missed eating meat the whole week. But, I must say it was a good experience trying new diet. Trying new things! I ate pastas with vegetables, lentils with rice, green tea, soups without any animal product used and salads too. Over all, I must say it’s a bit hard but turning vegan can help you lose a lot of weight If you want to lose some pounds then Ill advice you on turning vegan for at least 30 days . Taramati Baradari

T

Taramati Baradari has been successful in merging the glorious past with today’s trendy present due to Telangana Tourism’s admirable efforts. Early mornings and dusk ushers in a magical ambience. It’s not hard to visualize how serene and pretty the place must have been during the days of the Sultans and their courtesans, when they would emote their feelings through dance and songs written in praises of their Kings. The monument of Taramati Baradari sits atop a hill from where the vista of the city and the Golconda Fort can be seen glittering at night. The days are filled with travelers and visitors, and locals too, who want to drop in for a cup of coffee or lounge with family and friends at leisure. The place offers a great spot for all throughout the year being a cultural venue as well as a good eating joint. But, it is better known for its events. It has dedicated itself to hosting some of the finest Indian classical music and folk art and dance performances. Its fantastic acoustics and the underlying romantic tales have made it a perfect junction to hold events. Taramati Baradari is a Persian style garden built during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah, the second Sultan of Golconda. Taramati Baradari is a historical sarai as part of Ibrahim Bagh in Hyderabad.

HISTORY

The Baradari was constructed on the banks of the Musi River. Today, the region comes under the city limits of Hyderabad, India. The tourism department attributes the name to the reign of the Seventh Sultan of Golconda, Abdullah Qutb Shah who as an ode to his favorite courtesan, Taramati, is said to have named the sarai Taramati Baradari. There were two ravishing courtesans who were sisters and were adept dancers and often sang for their prince. It is said that the prince was so smitten by the voice of Taramati, one of the courtesans, that he created the palace which would carry her voice along with the wind, across to the Golconda Fort. Legends also say that the sisters would often dance on ropes tied between the pavilion and sultan’s balcony.

TARAMATI BARADARI NOW

The baradari was left abandoned until Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation realized the tourism possibilities of the place. Now, it is the permanent venue for Taramati music festival & Premavati dance festival and is one of the best convention and cultural complexes of the state. The complex spread over 7 acres includes an air-conditioned theatre with a capacity to seat 500 people, an open-air auditorium with a capacity for 1600 people, a banquet hall with the capacity of 48 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

250 people, multi cuisine restaurant and accommodation facility with bar, swimming pool, food court and a fitness centre etc. The breezy pavilion with 12 doorways allows the wind to carry the voices across, rendering an ethereal setting to the place for concerts and live performances. Many visit Taramati Baradari for its restaurant and the conference and business center. Evenings are sometimes cramped for space with music lovers trying to find some place to sit. It’s wonderful to hang around Taramati Baradari’s compound as the day comes to a close. The view of the lovely Golconda Fort gently fades away, giving rise to the many twinkling city lights.

FACTS ABOUT TARAMATI BARADARI

1) Taramati Baradari is all about the legendary romance of an ordinary woman singer and a prominent ruler of a famous dynasty - 7th Sultan of the Qutub Shah dynasty of Golconda, Hyderabad. This is a true story of the “have and have not”, bound together by some nature’s force. Here the nature’s force being the sweet, melting voice of an unknown woman that touched the heart of a ruler of a vast land. 2) Abdullah Qutb Shah used to hear Taramati’s voice as she sang for travelers at the serai, while he sat two kilometers away at Golconda fort. 3) Another story tells us that two ravishing dancing sisters, Taramati and Premamati, danced on ropes tied between their pavilion and the balcony of the king and patron, Abdulla Qutub Shah. 4) About half a mile north of the fort, lies the Qutub Shahi kings and queens grave amid a cluster of carved royal tombs, in what once their rose gardens were. 5) As a tribute to Taramati and Premamati, they both were buried in the royal cemetery of the Qutub Shahi kings. 6) The Qutub Shahi Tombs hold this testimony true, for all the stories and lore’s told about them. Their romance remains still effervescent; overwhelming its visitors with their tales. 7) A clap on the balcony of the Baradari could be heard in the Golkonda fort. The Baradari is built in a special acoustic structure which allowed the wind to carry the sweet voice of Taramati to the Fort. 8) It was built in the period 15 CE.

FEATURE Well, as I am final year B. Arch student. So, I did a case study and visited the place quite a few times. I think it’s a big open place, nice visual views to look at, climate and the atmosphere is preferably good and indeed it’s a calm resort. 3pm to 6pm is the best time for the visitors, quite a few halls and auditoriums are there but then all are closed and even the rooms there aren’t that happening but obviously well for a one night stay. The restaurant food is average and the cameras aren’t allowed. The swimming pool there is simply designed and there is nothing appealing in it and many views like Golconda fort, seven tombs can be seen from the hill of Taramati Baradari. Saad Khan, Student

There is certainly something musical about this place. The architecture of this historical building is keeping in mind the acoustics. It is believed that Taramati used to sing at this place and her voice could be heard at the Golconda Fort. Don’t try this now; this was true when there was wilderness between these two places. What one can try now is singing, right at the centre of the building and you’ll sound striking the right chord.... A splendid experience for a music lover. Imran Nassiri, 4th year AR student

It is a beautiful place. I have been there once and I must say, this place has something that I want to go there again. It is said that Taramati used to sing for the travelers at serai and her voice was carried to the ears of sultan sitting few kilometers away from her at the Golconda fort. See… that is the specialty of this place. This place is amazing to visit with family on a Sunday morning or any other time too. I think our generation should keep visiting such places as there is so much to learn and so much to see. I would surely go back to this place again! Sai Prashant, Mechanical engineer

The Taramati Baradari is a lovely property, though a little away from the thick of things in Hyderabad. However, as we were having a leisurely holiday trip, the location was fine with us. The resort has been constructed below the Taramati pavilion which rises atop a hillock adjacent to the property and has a magical effect especially at night when it is lit up. Behind the resort, is, a patch of forest which attracts a large and diverse birdlife and several sounders of pigs. The Golconda fort is visible too from the resort, rising in the distance, recreating a feeling of the past. Fahad Osmani - Student

Taramati Baradari is considered to be one of the finest hotels at the moment for the aesthetic ambience it posses. Furthermore, the history it holds about the intricate fables about Abdullah Qutub Shah and Taramati adds to its appeal and continues to fascinate tourists all across the world. The architectural beauty that it holds fascinates fellow art lovers. Apart from its grand appearance, it is also well equipped with a multi cuisine restaurant, a banquet hall, an open air auditorium and other such facilities. Jazim Mujeed- Traveler

We look upto you! They mould us, they inspire us and they selflessly serve us. But, who are they? ‘They’ are our Mentors. This Teacher’s Day, we pay a tribute to the teachers for the contribution made by them in our lives. We spoke to five students about their most important mentor and here’s what they tell us: Saniya Saketh is a student of ICFAI (IBS), Hyderabad. She believes that her Dad is her #1 person for life. There is no one who could take his place. Saniya’s father, Mr. Saketh Ram is an entrepreneur in the chemical industry. Saniya and her father both share a bond that is nothing less than the bond between best friends. Who do you believe is your mentor? My dad is my mentor; he is the one who guides me all the time. What makes him stand out from others? Dad is the most fun person to be around. He is more like a friend; we can share anything with each other. What is the most inspiring thing that you’ve learnt from him? Right from my childhood, dad has always taught me to never give up. He has always strived for more and that’s what I look up to. What is the best compliment that you’ve got from him that made your day? I remember when I was in middle school and I came second in a writing competition, but dad said, “I think you did great”. This made my day! One such incident when you have been caught and scolded by him? I’m less of a mischief person. The last time I got scolded by dad would be when I didn’t keep my time. On a scale of one to ten, how amazing is he? HUNDRED! Couldn’t get any lesser…!

We always wish to be like our Mom. We’ve seen her taking care of the entire family, sacrificing her own needs for us, and doing whatever it takes to make us happy. This is why the love of a mother is beyond description. Aditya Muppana’s mom, Mrs. Lakshi Muppana completely fits into her role as a home-maker. Aditya is a BBA student at IBS Hyderabad; she believes her mom is her support system, guide, mentor and inspiration. Who do you believe is your mentor? When I think of a mentor, I can only think of my Mom. What makes her stand out from others? Mom is beautiful in and out. There couldn’t be any person more true to me than her. What is the most inspiring thing that you’ve learnt from her? There couldn’t be just one thing that I’ve learnt from her. Every day is a new learning experience. What is the best compliment that you’ve got from her that made your day? On the day of my graduation, Mom said “I’m so proud to be your mother.” One such incident when you have been caught and scolded by her? Mom and I have nothing less than a catfight almost every day! The last time she scolded me was when I lied about my fever to bunk college. On a scale of one to ten, how amazing is she? For all that she has done for me, even a 10 wouldn’t be enough. 50 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

FEATURE In life, if there is anything that is irreplaceable, it is the love from your mother. We can never have enough of all the care and attention we receive from her. Lekhya Kalahasty, a student from ICFAI (IBS), feels the same about her mother, Mrs. Sreedevi Kalahasty. Her mother is nothing less than a multitasker, from dropping her daughter off to college to teaching at Obul Reddy School, she is great at everything. Who do you believe is your mentor? Mom! She has always been by my side like a solid rock. What makes her stand out from others? Mom has been so supportive all the time. Right from the time I cried on the first day of school to dropping me off (teary-eyed) at the airport for my internship in Singapore. What is the most inspiring thing that you’ve learnt from her? Mom is a complete multi-tasking person. She can go to work, drop me off to college and build an empire at the same time. What is the best compliment that you’ve got from her that made your day? “I see myself in you” That’s what she said. One such incident when you have been caught and scolded by her? I think there wouldn’t be a day when I and mom didn’t have an argument. I got caught for skipping lunch and I can still hear her scolding me. On a scale of one to ten, how amazing is she? A complete 10 for a person who completes me.

Catfights! The one word that can summarize the relationship between sisters. They fight and then they make up. Sisters are the best companions anyone can wish for. We spoke to two sisters, Yamini and Priyanka Rathod, the former being the elder sister. Both the sisters are students of IBS, Hyderabad and are studying BBA. Here’s what Priyanka has to say about her mentor, her sister: Who do you believe is your mentor? For me it’s my sister. No matter how many fights we have, we will always be there for each other. What makes her stand out from others? Well, she’s annoying that’s what makes her stand out!! But on a serious note, she’s always helped me, whether it’s on school projects or bullies at college, I always have her behind me. What is the most inspiring thing that you’ve learnt from her? My sister has always stood up for what is right. She has never let negativity affect her. What is the best compliment that you’ve got from her that made your day? Compliments from my sister are so rare. I can’t even think of one! Once in a while when she decides to be good to me she says “You can do better.” One such incident when you have been caught and scolded by her? The last time my sister scolded me was for being careless and losing her earphones. On a scale of one to ten, how amazing is she? I think she can do an eight, I would give her a 10 if she shares her clothes. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2016 51

FEATURE We spoke to Ashmeet Juneja, a student and model from St. Francis College for Women about the person who inspires her most. For Ashmeet, her dad is her superhero and he is her priority. She is definitely “Daddy’s little princess”. Mr. Jasbir Singh is a business man, and being a businessman he is always caught up with work. But, he can never be busy for his daughter and is always there by her side. That’s the essence of the love that they share. Who do you believe is your mentor? The best mentor I could ever have is my Dad. A mentor for life! What makes him stand out from others? Dad has always been there supporting every decision I make. He will tell me when I’m wrong and then applaud me when I’m right. What is the most inspiring thing that you’ve learnt from him? I inspire to be just like him, if I could be even 1% like him, I would call myself successful. What is the best compliment that you’ve got from him that made your day? When I walked the ramp for the first time, Dad saw my pictures and said “That’s my daughter.” One such incident when you have been caught and scolded by him? Dad spoils me and Mom scolds me. So, Dad is just my superhero rescuing me from Mom. On a scale of one to ten, how amazing is he? He made me a 10/10 and that’s how amazing he is.

Constants, Inseparable, Partners in crime, a love-hate relationship, the sugar to the lime, this is what defines ‘Brotherhood’. An older brother is always a guide to his younger siblings. There couldn’t be anyone else who is as protective and supportive as an brother. Mr. Aqil Uzair believes that his brother, Mr. Adil Umair, is his encouragement, motivating force, and inspiration. Aqil is a student from IBS, Hyderabad and his older brother is working in Riyadh after completing engineering from CBIT, Hyderabad. We spoke to Aqil about the person whom he looks up to, and here’s what he told us: Who do you believe is your mentor? The one who always walked beside me as a friend, inspiration, constant, my brother. What makes him stand out from others? There couldn’t be anyone else with whom I can share all my secrets with. What is the most inspiring thing that you’ve learnt from him? My brother is the oldest among the siblings; he has never withdrawn from his responsibilities, come what may. What is the best compliment that you’ve got from him that made your day? He isn’t the kind of a person who will compliment me; he is the one always pulling my leg! But once he called me “Chocolate Boy”, so maybe I’ll take that as a compliment. One such incident when you have been caught and scolded by him? “Partner in crime”, that’s what he is. We both have an equal share in the mischief and get scolded equally by dad. On a scale to one to ten how amazing is he? 9.5/10, minus 0.5 because he never lets me win an argument between us. 52 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

Festivity Gala FEATURE

We had a tête-è-tête with two families that celebrate the widely known festivals in the city. Read on to know more.... Of Biryani, Blessings and Bakrid.. Bakr-Eid or Id al-Adha is the holy festival of Muslims. The feast is celebrated worldwide every year. The festivity is a strikingly magnificent affair in the Islamic states. We spoke to Naaziya Himmati and her Iranian Muslim family about how they honor this day. Family! Nothing is complete without them. Our family is the most important part of every festival. Do Iranian Muslims celebrate Bakr-Eid different from others? Iranian Muslims celebrate Bakr-Eid in the same way as others. It’s a jolly affair with family and friends. Nevertheless, there is a lavish spread of Iranian food which is very appetizing. What are the prior preparations made for this day? In our family, the ladies play an important role of making all the preparations because men are at work. From shopping for clothes to shopping for the flavorsome food, they do everything! Why do you celebrate Bakr-Eid? This day is celebrated to honor the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, in order to submit to God’s commands. However, before that, God intervened and sent an angel with the message that his sacrifice is already accepted. The days of Eid are the holiest days of the Islamic Calendar. What is the best part of the holy day? We have many women in our family. All the ladies love to dress up and look gorgeous on this day. Every festive occasion gives us a reason to pamper ourselves. What is the first thing that the family does together on this day? All of us get together for the sacrifice in the morning. After the sacrifice is made, the food is divided in three parts. One is retained with our family, another part is distributed among friends and relatives and the third share is given to the poor and needy. What is the most important thing that you can’t do without on this day? 54 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

What is the most exquisite Iranian dish that’s definitely on the table? There isn’t just one dish I can think of. There is so much variety on our plate, khormeysabzi, Qimey, cholokabab and phesenjoonare the main Iranian dishes. You can never have enough of it! How is Bakr-Eid different from other Muslim festivals? On this day, the sacrifice is being made to take away all the negativity from our lives. There isn’t much of a difference. But yes, in our family we do not share gifts on this day. How would you describe this day in one statement? The Big Fat Biryani Feast. What to eat: Khormeysabzi, Qimey, Cholokabab and Biryani. What to wear: From Pakistani suits to Sharara. Where to shop: There is no better place than Begum Bazaar for the best jewelry. A summary of the day in three words: Family, Food and Fun!

Celebrating the Birth of the Lord..

Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival celebrated in the honor of Lord Ganesha. The eve of Lord Ganesha’s birth is beautifully celebrated all over India, especially Maharashtra. What could be better than having a Marathi family interview with us on how they celebrate this day! We have Mrs. Ujwala Sheelam, and her family to talk about the festivities at her home.

How do you celebrate this day? This festival is observed during the holy month of Bhadra. There is a grand celebration for 10 days, ending on the day of Anantachaturdashi. On this day, the entire family gets together for an hour long ceremony in the honor of Lord Ganesha, the idol is adorned with beautiful garlands, sweets and fruits are offered to the Lord. How eagerly do you wait for this day? Ganesh Chaturthi is the most important day in the year. It’s celebrated very grandly, with the entire family together. The house is full of warmth and togetherness. What’s the best part of this festival? Without any doubt, Laddus; the sweet delight that we send and receive for almost 10 days during this month. But yes, on a serious note, festivity brings the entire family together. What is the main dish that is cooked specially on this day? As a Marathi family, no matter which festival it is, PooranPolliis a must! An important detail that you don’t miss out on? Every year we make sure that the height of the idol is taller than the previous year. No wonder we are shifting the idol to the garden this year. With so many people in the house and so much to do, how do you go about it? A festival in our family without any chaos is not a festival. (laughs) The

day begins with pooja in the presence of the entire family and it ends with kids running around the house, dancing and singing. It’s such a happy and grand affair! A fun fact that you would like to share with us? A couple of years ago, on the first day of the festival, many boxes of sweets went missing. Apparently, the kids ate it. What is the main essence of this festival? The most beautiful thing is that it is an emotional journey as the festival comes to an end on the 10th day and the Lord’s idol has to be immersed. It’s never happened that our family hasn’t been teary-eyed on the emersion day. We just hope for the Lord to come sooner and bring happiness into our lives again. If you could sum up the 10 days in one word what would that be? Magnificent! What to eat: PooranPolli, Geejibhaji and Modak. What to hear: Ganesh aarti. “Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva.” Slogan of Ganesha: “Ganpatibappamoryapudhchyavarshilavkarya.” Save the Planet: During the 10th day of the festival, the idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed into the water because people believe that it’s the way to heaven. The idols which are made of Plaster of Paris contain chemicals pollute the water and due to this reason idols made of mud or natural clay to avoid the pollution of water. This Ganesh Chaturthi, Go eco-friendly!

The greatest spectacle of sports, held every four years, the 2016 Olympics is here already! India has been taking part in Olympics since 1900, before independence and has only won 26 medals so far. The 2016 Rio Olympics is a little extra special for India, after all we sent our largest and strongest contingent over to the Olympic Games; around 120 athletes from India. 9 players from Hyderabad went to compete in the Olympics this year, becoming a part of India’s largest Olympic Contingent in History! What’s even better is 5 out of the 9 are women. Hyderabad is emerging as a hub for sports in India and we Hyderabadi’s are not just happy but elated about this! Our players have won multiple laurels for our country and are continuously inspiring the youth with their achievements.

KYNAN CHENAI Rifle Shooter

Kynan Chenai won the gold medal in trap shooting at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 in Pune, where he represented India. He has also successfully won the gold medal in the Junior Men’s Trap shooting events in 2007 and 2008. The 25-year-old is India’s youngest male shooting competitor, having successfully transitioned from a gold medal-studded junior pro career. His father Darius Chenai is himself a former National Shooting Champion in Shotgun Trap shooting event and is a successful businessman. He said, “Around 2009 or 2010, I was discussing with my parents whether I would go for further studies abroad or continue with shooting. I told them that this is what I want to do, and they were like, we will back you up completely. I’m glad they agreed to this, and they’re why I’m going to Rio.” He said, “I’m training hard and I know once you make it to the finals, anything can happen. I’m not going there to make the numbers; I will be fighting for gold.” Regardless of the outcome in Rio, Kynan’s rise to make the Olympic cut is a testament to how India’s shooting future and present are in safe hands. The Indian contingent is better prepared for Rio 2016 Olympics than London as we all stick our necks out and predict a record tally of medals for India in Brazil. Well, “The important thing in the Olympics Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well” A Big, big congratulations to all the champions representing India in the Rio Olympics! We Hope all your dreams come true and you make us, Hyderabadi’s proud!

PUSARLA VENKATA SINDHU Badminton Player

P. V. Sindhu, 21, is the first Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the World Championships. A Padma Shree award, Sindhu has also broken into the top 20 in the World Badminton Federation’s rankings. Sidhu is Saina Nehwal’s successor and inspired from her; Saina and Sindhu will lead the Indian badminton contingent at the Olympics. She is no day-dreamer. The day she saw Saina return to Hyderabad to a huge reception after winning the bronze at the London Olympics, the 16-year-old daughter of professional volleyball players, in her own words, was determined to be there at Rio Olympics and possibly come back with a medal. ‘I am excited and will give my 100 percent to clinch a medal at the games. Want all of you to support so that we can do even better this time around in the Olympics,’ and also, ‘I want to thank OGQ (Olympic Games Quest) for their constant support. They have been supporting me since the time I was 14 years old and now I have come a long way; I am 20. I will be participating in my first Olympics and I am looking forward to Rio. The fact that she reports on time at the coaching camps daily, traveling a distance of 56 km from her residence, is perhaps a reflection of her willingness to complete her desire to be a good badminton player with the required hard work and commitment.

SAINA NEHWAL Badminton women’s singles

Saina Nehwal is the former World no.1 in Women’s Singles. She is also the first Indian to win a medal at the Olympics, and has set many other records of firsts for India. Saina won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. All the dreams for the 26-year-old coming true will ride on one important aspect - her fitness levels. After her historic feat of becoming the world No. 1 in April 2015, Saina’s career graph had valleys and peaks spread in equal measure, hitting the deepest point at the end of 2015 when her movements got severely restricted due to pelvic and Achilles tendon injuries. The Hyderabadi had to pull out every resource from within to stage recovery and get back on her feet to keep her Rio hopes alive. Rio will mark a third Olympics for Nehwal, who is hitting a rich vein of form at exactly the right time. “You can’t predict results. You need hard work and God’s blessing, apart from support from the fraternity,” the worlds number six (Saina) said.

For more than half a century, diamonds have dominated the market for fine jewelry. Over the last few years, the sea of sparkling ice has, little by little, become enlivened by splashes of color, as a number of factors push colored stones — everything from emeralds, rubies and sapphires to turquoise, lapis and coral — back into vogue. Despite the immense popularity of diamonds, colored gemstones have always been among the most popular and expressive forms of jewelry. The bright colors give each of these gems a unique personality and personal tastes in color often dictate preferences for particular stones. Long before diamonds were found worthy of jewelry, people revered sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and all manner of colored stones. In addition, almost all colored gems were believed to have special powers or cured specific illnesses. There was a time when a collection of different gemstones was the equivalent of a medicine cabinet! Today, gemstones are still loved for their beauty and “personality.” The precious gemstones - sapphire, ruby, and emerald - are among the most prized. Precious gemstones of good size and quality are so rare that a natural, unenhanced, strongly colored stone can be worth as much per carat, or more, than a diamond of comparable quality. Given the extreme cost and rarity of such stones, jewelers developed ways to enhance the appearance of more common stones, both precious and semiprecious. For hundreds of years, it has been a common practice to heat gems to bring out their best color. This is viewed as simply extending what nature started; since it is the heat and pressure within the earth that gives gems their color.

Colored Gemstones Have Got Their Sparkle Back Precious Gemstones

Only three colored gemstones are considered precious. These are the emerald, sapphire and ruby, which have retained their prized positions among jewels due to their extraordinary colors and extreme rarity. Precious gemstones with good color and large size are very hard to come by. Because of their rarity, it is common to use stones with inclusions and blemishes in the jewelry.

Semi-Precious Gemstones

A semi-precious gemstone includes any gemstone other than sapphire, emerald or ruby. The value of semi-precious gemstones can vary depending on the availability of the mineral; natural black opal, for example, is hard to come by and more valuable than most other semi-precious stones. As a rule, however, semi-precious stones are always more plentiful than other precious stones. That makes it easier to find large, well-colored, very clean stones appropriate for jewelry. In addition, the wide range of colors available makes semi-precious stones the choice for people who want to create an exclusive look with their jewelry. 60 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

Demi Lovato Sued By Sleigh Bells

Kareena is very much part of ‘Veere Di Wedding’: Rhea Kapoor The news of Kareena Kapoor Khan opting out of ‘Veere Di Wedding’ are on a rife, official sources confirm that there is no truth to the rumors. Producer, Rhea Kapoor and the makers of the movie have confirmed that Kareena is an important part of the movie and shooting will commence in October. The Bollywood diva who is expecting a baby soon, laughed off the reports surrounding her exit from the movie. She is quoted saying, “We are going to shoot ‘Veere Di Wedding’ for a couple of days in October. Then I will pick up the film post delivery. I am definitely doing the film. We are working on how and when we can shoot”.

The “Confident” singer has a new legal battle on her hands. Demi has a lawsuit filed against her by Sleigh Bells for copyright infringement. The group claims that the former Disney star’s 2015 hit song “Stars” sounds familiar to their track from 2010 titled “Infinity Guitars”. According to the lawsuit, “A comparison of the two songs reveals that, at the very least, the combination of the hand claps and bass drum, structured as 3 quarter beats and a rest, with the bass drum providing a counter-rhythm to the hand claps, is at least substantially similar in both works. This infringing material repeats throughout the Defendants’ song.” Lovato is not the only person who has been slammed with the lawsuit, the other names mentioned UMG Recordings and Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub. Last year, Yacoub opened up to Rolling Stone about the allegations that the two songs were similar at the time, saying, “We did not use any samples in Demi Lovato’s song ‘Stars’. Demi was also not involved with the production. She only wrote top line.” And shortly after the song was released late last year, the band tweeted the following at Demi: “Flattered you guys sampled ‘Infinity Guitars’ and ‘Riot Rhythm’ for ‘Stars’ but we were not contacted. Gotta clear those.”

A multi-million dollar home

Kylie Jenner, the youngest in the KarJenner clan is making waves in the cosmetic industry, has the highest followers on Instagram and Snapchat, and now (Drumroll, please) she is a real estate mogul. The 19-year-old has bought yet ‘another’ multimillion dollar residence, her portfolio of investments in the housing world is topping to $13.2 million. Two years ago she bought a $2.7 million adobe, at the age of 17. Fast forward through extensive renovations to the property’s exterior and redesign, Jenner listed the home earlier this summer for $3.9 million. In May 2016, Jenner took her passion for properties to another level when she bought a $6 million Cape Cod-style spread in Hidden Hills, Calif. When scoping out the potential to invest in even better opportunities than ever before, why not look right outside your front window? That’s exactly what could have happened when Kylie plunked down $4.5 million for the home adjacent to her current mansion. Jenner documented the moment she got the keys to her latest investment on Snapchat, and more of her typically sold out lip kits are a part of the plan to expand, we’re fully on board! Did we mention she just turned 19? 68 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

Sindhu, who looked elated and joyful at the outpour of love and affection from the city was whisked away on a bus and cheered by a stadium full of proud supporters. At the ceremony, the master and guide behind the glorious win, said that he had not expected such a warm welcome. The champ’s silver medal at the Rio Olympics makes her the first Indian woman to bring laurels to the country. It has also being reported that the country’s highest sporting award, The Ragiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, will be offered to four athletes ; which includes, medalists P. V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, along with gymnast Dipa karmakar and ace shooter Jitu Rai.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

RUSTOM The infamous 1959 Nanavati case had spawned a couple of early films, neither of which came close to the lurid excitement of the real- life incident which involved a handsome naval officer, his lovely-but-lonely wife, and her lover, and a sensational murder. And yet both Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke and Achanak bear a stronger allegiance to the Nanavati case than Akshay Kumar’s Rustom, which borrows the core idea, and then adds a layer of extra intrigue. The idea may have been to spice up an already spicy plot, but the result is dilution, and it doesn’t work in the favor of the film. It also doesn’t help that the film is fashioned like it is the unpacking the Nanavati Case for Dummies. Each scene is explicatory, with characters talking about what they are seeing, what they are doing, and what they are about to do. Each character is given dialogues to deliver: we know it is a ‘period’ film because the sets, the costumes and the locations scream attention (several look computer-generated), and the characters are made to declaim, not speak. SUICIDE SQUAD In the continuing effort to create a series of interconnected films based on DC Comics characters—similar to the well-established (and, thus far, superior) Marvel Cinematic Universe—“Suicide Squad” is just about as unpleasant as this year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but for totally different reasons. In following the misadventures of a group of super villains who are forced to work together to defeat a powerful enemy, “Suicide Squad” is actually trying to be fun, or at least it’s trying to find the mix of daring and cheekiness that made “Deadpool” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” such twisted delights. With a few, rare exceptions, the attempts at humor in “Suicide Squad” land with a thud that is, if you can hear such a sound over the deafening din of gunfire and the bombastic score. Their first assignment is to take down a seemingly insurmountable, supernatural figure: Cara Delevingne as the ancient Enchantress, who can time travel and zip through space and manipulate metal and all kinds of impressive, dangerous skills. Besides Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Killer Croc, there’s Jay Hernandez’s heavily-tatted Diablo, who’s been cursed with the ability to create fire; Karen Fukuhara as the masked Katana, who’s deadly with the samurai sword that’s haunted by her slain husband’s spirit; Jai Courtney as Boomerang, an Aussie baddie who does … something with a boomerang; and Adam Beach’s Slipknot, who does … something else. Oh! I totally forgot about The Joker. That’s because he’s barely in “Suicide Squad,” despite his heavily hyped participation. PELLI CHUPULU PelliChoopulu, is one film which has created a lot of buzz off late. Right from the day the trailer was launched, this film has received positive feedback. The romantic comedy is directed by Tarun Bhaskar and has Vijaya Devarakonda and Ritu Varma as the main leads. Let’s now see whether the film lives up to the buzz that it has created. Pelli Choopulu is one film which comes as a breath of fresh air in the heavy pollution of commercial cinema. The film has many beautiful moments which one can easily relate to. With this film, Tollywood finds another talent called Tharun Bhaskar as his effortless narration makes things breezy throughout the proceedings. The film is bound to do well in centers, overseas and especially the younger generation will lap it big time. Finally, all those who want to watch a clean and feel good love story, Pelli Choopulu is one film which should not be missed.

Alphabet Soup for Lovers (Anita Nair)

A perfect recipe for affair, love and passion, Alphabet Soup for Lovers by Anita Nair is a story about Lena Abraham, who defines love with only one word- Disappointment. Lena is married to K.K., but not for love, only for comfort. But then one day, love knocks on her door. A stranger comes to live with them at their tea plantation in Annamalai hills, and love strikes her. Shoola Pani, the South Indian actor is running away from his stardom for peace and tranquility. Something strikes between them in the very first meeting, something which is described through narration of Lena’s cook Komathi. She defines their love story through her dishes. Komathi is also trying to learn English. To make it easier to learn, she starts learning alphabets in the form of dishes that she makes. A for Arisi Appalam, B for Badam that she uses in Halwa, M for Murungakai etc. Alphabet Soup for Lovers will strike a chord of love and passion within your heart when you read it. In each chapter, Komathi starts describing an Alphabet and dish that she can associate with it. Then she leaves a lesson with each dish which can make you understand the complexities of love. Within the story of Lena and Shoola Pani, you find another story of Komathi and Rayar. And not just the story, we also loved the cute size and amazing cover of the book as well! That is something which stands out completely and attracts you towards the book! The connection between food and love is made brilliantly in Alphabet Soup for Lovers. Kudos to Anita Nair’s creative skills! The illustrations were really good. Alphabet Soup for lovers is a book that one should definitely read! This is one book that you should not miss out on.

The Nest (Cynthia D’ Aprix Sweeney)

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives. Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs’ joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems. This is a story about the power of family, the possibilities of friendship, and the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

The Passenger (Lisa Lutz)

From the author of the New York Times bestselling Spellman Files series, Lisa Lutz’s latest blistering thriller is about a woman who creates and sheds new identities as she crisscrosses the country to escape her past: you’ll want to buckle up for the ride! Forty-eight hours after leaving her husband’s body at the base of the stairs, Tanya Dubois cashes in her credit cards, dyes her hair brown, demands a new name from a shadowy voice over the phone, and flees town. It’s not the first time. She meets Blue, a female bartender who recognizes the hunted look in a fugitive’s eyes and offers her a place to stay. With dwindling choices, Tanya-now-Amelia accepts. An uneasy and dangerous alliance is born. It’s almost impossible to live off the grid today, but Amelianow-Debra and Blue have the courage, the ingenuity, and the desperation, to try. Hop scotching from city to city, Debra especially is chased by a very dark secret…can she outrun her past? With heart-stopping escapes and devious deceptions, The Passenger is an amazing psychological thriller about defining yourself while you pursue your path to survival. One thing is certain: the ride will leave you breathless.

TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2016 77

TAROT

Forecast For

September 2016 - Tarot reading by Nupur Heda Patil

LEO

Without a doubt one of the most striking zodiac signs! In September of 2016, you go through a lot of amazing situations. September will definitely be successful for Leos, an exceptionally dynamic and incredible time, although there may some sort of “deviations”. For example, some Leos will suddenly feel a strong desire to hide somewhere deep in a hole and it will be impossible to resist this desire, although as we know, a man’s fate lies in their own hands and blaming the stars for their own weakness is a common, though not a very positive phenomenon.

although in general it will be a quite positive life stage, during which you’ll be able to easily achieve all the goals you set. Therefore, you should focus on what you really want and avoid being distracted by irrelevant issues; you simply won’t have enough time, energy and vitality for everything. The thing is that Venus, your planet ruler, will lose a lot of intensity in its positive dynamics due to its current planetary positions. Fortunately, Saturn, the exaltation planet of your sign, will form an alliance with the Sun, which is usually in charge of your “fall”; all this will ensure that you are able to easily withstand any potential negativity, and most importantly, a successful confluence of external circumstances will make up for the lack of your vitality.

VIRGO

SCORPIO

The first month of autumn is likely to seem a rather quiet time, perhaps too quiet, considering the position of this sign in previous stages of life (the summer season in particular). Your working area will be under the influence of Venus, responsible for the “fall” of Virgos. The situation will be very ambiguous and unstable, but there is no reason to panic. In the end, everything will turn out quite positively for you, despite the fact that this month the earth trine will be deprived of the additional patron, “the heavenly leader”, which would now come in handy. The total level of negativity coming from the negatively-tuned planets will be much weaker than even the position of Mercury standing alone. As a result, the biggest hindrance that your enemies will be able to cause you is the decrease of the production rate and the pace of the development of your personal relationships. It’s fair to say that it’s not the worst case scenario.

Firstly, the position of Saturn, the exaltation of Scorpios, implies the total support and stability of your vital energy. Secondly, at this stage the general influence of the stars will be seriously reduced, that is, any external influence on your sign will be weakened, regardless of the modality of the emanations. In other words, you will now get more freedom than ever before. And it would be very unwise not to take advantage of this situation. Regarding the working sphere, September of 2016 can easily become a very productive stage of life, only if Scorpios appreciate all their advantages; of course, at this very moment still potential ones. Starting from the first days of the month you will need to significantly increase your levels of vigilance and closely monitor your closest associates.

LIBRA

(born November 22 - December 21)

(born July 23 - August 22)

(born August 23 - September 22)

(born September 23 - October 22) September of 2016 will find them in a rather challenging situation, 78 SEPTEMBER, 2016 - TULIP

born October 23 - November 21)

SAGITTARIUS

September of 2016 will be a rather difficult and challenging time, in particular in regards to their “love life.” The fact is that your current exaltation, Venus, won’t simply give up its status, but also become your

TAROT

key antagonist and detractor. In general, the first month of fall will bring you a lot of anxieties and worries, though not necessarily uniquely negative ones. You will discover a lot for yourself and people who are dear to you will manage to find out even more. Certainly, thanks to you. You’ll be their “ray of light in the darkness!”

CAPRICORN

(born December 22 - January 19) September of 2016 will feel comfortable, though somewhat unusual. In the sense that now your exaltation, Mars, will seem seriously weakened, and therefore, despite the general trend of this stage, you might feel the lack of your vital forces. Therefore, you’ll have to look at the broader picture and wisely allocate your energy resources based on your observations.. It is essential now to pay special attention to your family issues, and your personal experience will come in handy. You need to act particularly prudent, and avoid “random” decisions. On the whole, we are talking about a productive stage of life, which may well bring you bright and victorious moments in the end. But you’ll definitely have to do your best to get there, that’s a fact, so don’t relax, especially when you’ve already achieved something.

AQUARIUS

(born January 20 - February 18) And though this event might seem like not the most positive one, in fact, this situation will disappoint Aquarius, because their lives will be filled with positive impacts from the celestial bodies of the solar system. The pretensions of Mars and if things with the main heavenly warrior turn out well, the situation with Saturn and Mercury will be noticeable and, fortunately, only lead to some soap opera instead of total negativity.

PISCES

(born February 19 - March 20) With regard to the working and financial direction, in September of 2016 Pisces will receive a lot of benefits, but not “for free”. That is, a lot of what you’ll be openly proud of at this stage will be the result of the actions taken in the previous stages of life, including the moments that you may well have forgotten. A kind of delayed effect as in a time bomb, but very positive. If you work for yourself, try not to load your subordinates with too much work. In the sensory-emotional direction in September of 2016 Pisces will find themselves in a similar situation. But here you shouldn’t turn a deaf ear and blind eye to certain things that will seem very significant for your loved ones. Even if you have no desire to “delve into the topic,” you should pretend that you’re interested by occasionally nodding and putting a smile on your face.

ARIES

(born Mar. 21 - April 19) September of 2016 will be both dynamic and relatively calm especially

in terms of any really negative moments. That is, on one hand, your patrons are predicting a successful and bright month for you, which at the same time will be exempt from ambiguous situations and “universal negativity.” Of course, certain nuances will take place, and it’s worth paying attention to the sphere of your personal relationship in particular (this is partly true about your financial sphere as well, to be exact, about the interpersonal relationship in the workplace). The thing is that Venus, responsible for the “expulsion” of Aries, will be repeatedly strengthened by its planetary position and its negative emanations will appear fairly strong

TAURUS

(born April 20 - May 20) The first month of autumn may seem a rather difficult time. In reality, this will be the true state of things: for many representatives of this sign September will be a very difficult stage of life, which is rightly described as controversial and mostly negative. The fact is that the planet-ruler of Taurus, Venus, in the view of its current planetary position will not be able to serve as a leading ally of this zodiac sign. In its turn Pluto, which is in charge of the “expulsion” of Taurus, will greatly enhance its negative emanation, and it will appear a rather strong blow which will cover all the areas of your life. At the same time Saturn, which is responsible for the “fall” of Taurus, will change the modality of its emanations and this will bring you some hope.

GEMINI

(born May 21 - June 20) A representative of the mutable cross of the air trine will feel comfortable in all respects. That means there will be no bright and large-scale upheavals, although, on the whole, the month will seem to be filled with a variety of events. The year 2016 is generally a quite unusual and dynamic time, and this implies that at this stage such a characteristic as “a calm month” adopts a special status. Although you won’t be required to display exceptional efforts and vitality, this month, in fact, will not be easy. Stay cool and do not rush to make hasty decisions, your rationalistic approach is now of paramount importance, while you’re emotional aspect is secondary.

CANCER

(born June 21 - July 22) September of 2016 people born under this highly positive and cheerful sign will experience a decrease in the overall levels of dynamics and vitality. We are talking here, however, about natural and predictable features of this particular interim, and there’s almost nothing you can do about it. In the relationship with your “significant other” you should try to be softer. Overall, you might feel that both you and your partner are missing some transparency and openness. Think about it, as well as about the fact that not everything is always about you and that sometimes your ego-centrism acquires quite visible outline.
