They opened their first outlet recently. Niharika is still a student pursuing her under graduation in Civil Engineering at Vasavi College of Engineering. This rapidly growing business opportunity was pursued by both of them. Niharika has always been entrepreneurial. She always liked doing things differently from the people around her. Both Niharika and Vivek didn’t quite like the idea of following others and preferred working in an “open” setting. Thus, like-minded people always go together and brought this unique concept to the city which is the First of its kind in India. What is the concept of Eat Confetti? The name itself is self explanatory. The theme is exclusively Unicorn. We have different desserts such as Macaroons, Cakesicles, Cupcakes, Donuts, and Cookies which are presented in Unicorn Theme. A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month
Good Girls Revolt
Creator: Dana Calvo Stars: Genevieve Angelson, Anna Camp, Erin Darke, Chris Diamantopoulos, Hunter Parrish, Jim Belushi, Joy Bryant, Grace Gummer Watch on Amazon Prime Video Though creator Dana Calvo’s airy, agreeable, short-lived series is, at first blush, a Mad Men-inspired portrait of working women in the era of the ERA, it’s amid the red pencil and hanging proofs of a fictional newsmagazine that Good Girls Revolt is at its sharpest. As capable, tenacious researchers Patti Robinson (Genevieve Angelson), Jane Hollander (Anna Camp) and Cindy Reston (Erin Darke) fight discrimination at News of the Week, the series’ sense of the culture (and counter-culture) remains as broad as a barn—Easy Rider, the Hell’s Angels, Buffalo Springfield—but it nonetheless illustrates, with humor and verve, the importance of reporting that pursues the unexpected angle, the hitherto unheard source.

Summers are all about sweating and feeling greasy and dirty and nothing can be more refreshing for the skin than a nice body scrub. It’s enriched with the warm vanilla extract from Madagascar and a rich blend of spices. Tea garden hill of Munnar
Munnar is a town that’s situated in the southwestern region of Kerala. It’s practically covered fully with tea plantations, some as high as 7000 feet above sea level. It is an ideal getaway for all those who want to enjoy some genuinely lovely moments with nature. The markets here are known for their bakery items like unni appams and homemade chocolates. A visit to the spices garden or flower garden makes you realise how gifted the hill station is. Do not forget to indulge in some spice shopping.

The reason celebrities use “official” on their Instagram accounts is to differentiate them from the fake accounts created in their name. It’s simply silly to use “official” after your name if all the people that know you are your parents and 5 friends.
LIFESTYLE How did your journey towards Hospitality industry start? I hold a B.E. Mechanical Degree from Bangalore University. But during those years more than Mechanical studies I was passionate about serving my country through Politics. It was an inborn aspiration and destiny gave me many platforms to express my vision of a better India. Hospitality industry was something I never thought of since my mind was always pre-occupied with the developmental ideas in the field of politics. My wife however always had a dream to own a restaurant, one that is spacious, out in the open air and serves good quality food. This led me to foray into the Hospitality industry! What were the initial hurdles and challenges you faced while foraying into the hospitality industry? Miami Koffee n Kitchen is my first venture and yes, there were many challenges to face through the journey and every day is still a challenge again! Since the coffee shop is the biggest in Hyderabad, with an area of 9000 sft., it was challenging to start from scratch as the terrace area of any building is hardly equipped. And it was a challenge to transform a terrace area into a coffee shop from scratch. We had to build a roof and also had to build separate rooms for DJ party event, kitchen and office. 9,000 sft area needs a lot of interior designing, so that was another challenge. All in all, it was quite an extensive and exhaustive task! Once the coffee shop was ready, we faced the biggest challenge --- Hookah was banned by the Hyderabad Police authority. So it was a setback to the ongoing progress. Every day there is a new challenge to face! What is your success mantra? How do you cope with the competition in the industry? While venturing into any project or business my main priority is market credibility. Your customers’ feedback must be your guideline. Quality matters over quantity and in the long run, only quality succeeds. Competition with others drains you mentally, that is the reason I never compete with anyone. I rely on my hard work, inner strength and dedication to achieve my goals. The only mantra I follow is to believe in yourself! How would you market your restaurant? What is its USP? There are many strong points that I would like to focus on. The coffee shop is on the 6th-floor sky facing, which is very relaxing and ideal for the Indian weather. It is very spacious and big, so people don’t feel suffocated. Customers can also celebrate birthdays /anniversaries and other important functions with the provision of DJ room and live band. The taste of food has been given utmost importance so that customers enjoy and relish the food to the fullest! And I must say that the USP of the place is undoubtedly the fact that it is the biggest coffee shop in Hyderabad!
RASHED KHAN “The Prince of Hospitality”
What next from here? The world is my stage and I have a long way to go. My main forte is public speaking and I would like to concentrate on it more. I would like to undertake initiatives to serve my society. I am the youth of India and if I want to bring about a progressive change in the country, I must enter the system. There is so much corruption and exploitation; we need to be in the system to change the system. It is a long and difficult road, I would like to quote Robert Frost here “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference “. The switchover just happened, it 2, Iqbal, Dor, Bombay to wasn’t planned. Bangkok, Aashayein, Mod, What is your typical day like? There are two parts of my life; when I’m shooting and when I’m not shooting. When Lakshmi and 8x10 Tasveer. I’m shooting, it’s always an early morning call time because Nagesh likes the 7 o clock shift so we need to be at the set by 6 for which we wake up at 5. As I’m into She is also the founder of the production, I’m supposed to be there an hour before the call time. After the shoot is done, you just fall asleep; a dreamless sleep because you’re so tired. The next cultural centre Lamakaan. day it’s the same story on repeat. And when I’m not shooting, it’s not structured because the kind of work we do, it’s not a 9 to 5 job. I try to wake up by 7 o clock and do my prayers. I also make sure that I do yoga at least five times a week, in the

What do you do in your leisure time? Because the work is not structured, there’s no work versus leisure. Sometimes you’re just like I’m not going to do anything and those leisure times now, with age, mean waking up late, probably not leaving the house, just vegetating; doing nothing. In Hyderabad, the lifestyle is anyway not hectic so you can meet up with friends for a cup of tea or something. A lot of my time is spent in Lamakaan because the environment is so conducive to being chill yet being constructive. I also get to meet a lot of people which I thoroughly enjoy. Have you shifted your base from Hyderabad to Mumbai? My base is still Hyderabad. I go to Mumbai for work. As it is the base for the industry, I need to be there whether it is to raise money for a film or talk to actors so it takes up most of my itinerary. I spend a lot of time there compared to other cities. If a shoot is in Rajasthan or Pondicherry or anywhere else, I’m going where the shoot takes me, of course. Otherwise, Mumbai is just to put a project together. What are the major differences between the two cities? They’re chalk and cheese. There’s absolutely nothing similar between Mumbai and Hyderabad; not the people, not the city, not the weather, just nothing. Hyderabad is home, not that I’m not familiar with Mumbai, I’ve gone to college there but if you had to put it into clichés of course life in Mumbai is faster. Mumbai allows you to choose, you can have a slow life if you want to, nobody seems to want it I think. It’s about work for me and Hyderabad is more about living it. They’re very very different cities. Styling tips for summer? Something loose and comfortable. Of course cotton and organic but that’s the way we are. I’ve moved into wearing a lot more sarees, you can get a huge variety of them. When going out in the sun, covering your head with a dupatta or a cap would be very advisable.
Rapid Fire What is one of the things you’d put on your bucket list? Hiking up Kilimanjaro. Who do you admire the most? My mom. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Neither but if I had to pick one, it would be a night owl. What is one thing that annoys you the most? Lack of commitment to what you do. What is your favourite movie quote? It’s from Mughal-E-Azam. When Madhubala tells Dilip Kumar, “Kaaton ko murjhane ka khaof nahin hota.” Describe yourself in 3 words. Happy go lucky. I think I’m a bit commitment phobic. And, I like to be entertained.

Mr.Hyderabad 2018 Shresth Goyal was crowned Starlife Mr Hyderabad and Mr India first runner-up 2018. This 20-year-old comes from a joint family and believes that respecting elders is the best motto in life. He says, “I’m stepping into the glamour world with goals that I’ve yet to achieve”. A student of Amity Global Business School, Shresth says that his family and friends are his strength; they inspire him and push him towards achieving his goals every day. Tell us something about yourself? I am a person with goals and here to achieve them, sorry if I’m already sounding crass, but yes I’m here stepping into the glamour world with goals that I’ve set to achieve. I am 20 years old and I’m a student of Amity Global Business School pursuing my BBA 3rd year and have done my schooling from St. Joseph’s Public School, King Koti I’m an old city resident so “apun mae bhi tashan hai” and at the same time I believe strongly in friends and family. I’m basically from a huge joint Agarwal family and believe that respecting elders should be one’s biggest motto in life. How did you get into modelling? Is it something you’ve always wanted to do? I say, every kid in his childhood wanted to be a superhero, so did I. And yes, acting always gave me a kick, I take acting to be nothing but the “Art of Deception” and making the audience believe what you actually don’t have or are experiencing. Modelling was something that interested me when I started growing vertically at a high pace during my teenage and that gave me a boost to mould my body into that of a model’s and yes, that’s when I realised that modelling will help me first create that upper layer of physical confidence. Describe your journey from being a college student to becoming Mr Hyderabad and Mr India first runner-up. I was pretty lucky that I grabbed both, Mr Hyderabad and Mr India first runner-up, for my city and stood on the 2nd position in the whole nation. It was a great, motivational experience. In the beginning, when I was new to gymming, I wasted a couple of years, but never wanted to stop. I set my mind that I want to do something in this field, and had to prove it to my parents that yes, I can do what interests me, with all my heart. And that is what kept me going and today I’m here with two titles, yet starving for more. I know I have to wait, but I want to rapidly grow. Fingers crossed. What accomplishments are you most proud of and why? When I was in high school, I was desperate and keen to be appointed as the president of the school cabinet. And I was elected, but as the vice-president and not the president. That was the first time I actually achieved what I was fighting for, but not fully. I was in the second position, and that was the point where it all started, that gave me the power of making myself completely ready. That was the day and it is today that I praise myself for achieving what I desire. I was a very hefty teenager, about 90 kilograms and 5’6”. It was then that I started painting and hoped that one day I’d be proud of my art and finally, I enjoy the sight of my paintings now. The thing that I’m the proudest of is my transformation and my run towards what I want to be and achieve. 26 MAY, 2018 - TULIP
What’s your favourite way to stay in shape? I hit the gym daily, I only take breaks on my rest days, and the best, toughest yet the quickest way to win your body goals is through diet. Diet is the one and only way to stay in shape. I take an off when it comes to workouts, but diet is what I’m devoted to. Yes, I do have a cheat meal, once a week, but that meal is only delicious because of the rest of my diet. I give my mother the credits for making me achieve the targets that I’ve set for myself when it comes to my body. She’s my chef, my morning alarm, my ready to go tiffin maker, my everything. I’m here on the stage only because of her backstage hard work. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? That’s a tough one to explain, but I want to be an actor by profession, and modelling will always be my passion because I love fashion. I’ll be soon heading to Mumbai, if possible, to start my acting career through an acting school. In next 5 years, I want to be a renowned model/actor in Mumbai. I will definitely do something because I believe only hard work pays off and no prayers will be answered if you aren’t on the right path. Without the right speed and interest, nothing will change and you’ll be where you are right now. I’m making progress, but I want to increase my pace, learn every day, grow daily, and yes, be the best the audience can get.

Unique, Brilliant & Beautiful The beautiful jewellery designer and star wife Maheep Kapoor spoke to us about her jewellery designs and gave us a little insight about how and when did it all started. Can you tell us about your designs? I have actually bought my whole collection from Mumbai a lot actually and different range of collections in diamond jewellery, chandbalis, cocktail rings. I want women in Hyderabad to see my whole range and fall in love with my jewellery as much as I do love designing it for them. What inspired you to make such beautiful jewellery? There is no doubt in this; it is my daughter who inspires me in designing jewellery. I don’t follow any trends because every 6 months the trends keep changing and that’s not my jewellery. What I think is when a woman buys the piece of my jewellery she should keep it in a cupboard for her daughter or daughter in law or for grandkids like that. My jewellery is something that can be passed on to the coming generations. When I got married I got to wear my grandmother’s jewellery and that kind of pieces cannot be made and the workmanship was so different and so beautiful so I want women buying my jewellery love my creations enough to keep it in a locker to pass it on to their heirs and so on. How did you get into jewellery designing? Designing jewellery was my destiny I think it just snowballed, I was pregnant with my daughter and I started designing randomly and then I took a course to learn more about jewellery designing because I have been working all of my life and I just couldn’t sit at home. My friends saw my designs and asked me to do some designs for them as well and suddenly I was making more and more designs and that’s when I thought why not get deep into it and pursue it. As a child, I wanted to hundred other different things but what triggered me was when I got to wear my grandmother’s jewellery for my wedding and I could finally take those out of the locker like the huge Mangtika, Jhumar, and that kind of jewellery you only wear it at your wedding. So I thought why not make such huge chandbalis or Mangtika, also my jewellery is very comfortable to wear throughout the day and you will do fine the entire day not feeling like to remove it. What are the challenges you have faced while making designs for your clients? Touch wood, I haven’t faced any such problems because my clients have been easy on me and also I always listened to my clients. Sometimes they bring their lehengas and ask me to design a jewellery that goes with the outfit, I always tell them that choose your jewellery first and the outfit because you wear your jewellery lot more than the lehengas. So it’s usually fun working with my clients and we work around things as well because I get inspired by them and they give me the ideas so it’s not really any challenges. Any styling advice you would like to share? My only advice is women should be individual and celebrate being women. When it comes to styling you jewellery my advice is don’t overwhelm yourselves with too much jewellery because people are looking at your jewellery, not you. Jewellery has to accentuate you and make you look beautiful, You are beautiful but you just need to stand out and shine.

Skills on Wheels Anam Sultana interns as a doctor for the most of the day and in her free time she skateboards. She is also a part of Kopal Goyal’s Project Wild Women, featuring 16 women in seven extreme sports. Anam has given us a light insight into how she became a skateboarder and also about Project Wild Women. How did you manage to be a skater and doctor? I still am trying to manage both haven’t found a perfect way yet. I don’t think there is. It’s a loop you can say when I’m studying or at the hospital at the back of my mind I’m thinking once I’m done with this I’m going to skateboard. And while I’m skateboarding I keep thinking about preparing for post-graduation. In the end, I just go with what I want to study/work… If I have had enough for the day I skateboard. Though skateboarding is obviously more fun than studying so sometimes I have got to condition myself to finish off my studies before I even pick up my board. This does put my mind in a fix but it’s my way around if I’m procrastinating. It all comes down to wanting to do both and doing exactly that. How did project wild women happen to you? All credits to Kopal Goyal she is the founder of Inspire crew and the brain behind the project Wild Women. She found out about me through a common friend and now I am a part of this amazing documentary. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” This film will be about badass, adventurous Indian girls and women, all over the world. Why this project is rare is because in India few females have been associated with cutting-edge adventure sports. The sports we are covering, most people even don’t know that there are women adventurers in this category. With the help of this movie, we are bringing them to light and uncovering their effort in the field of extreme sports. Alternative sports are really picking up and people around India are not only dabbling in these sports but are trying to make it their livelihood with a complete shift of their lifestyles. What is the motto of the inspire crew? Inspire crew is an evolving platform for women in extreme and adventure sports in India. It’s a shared ambition to create a space big enough to accommodate anyone with a passion towards the sports, without the support. What made you become a skateboarder? And when did it happen? When I first came across skateboarding I was curious as to how a person was defying gravity and was in the air with just a board, this was when I was 10 or 11yrs old. I knew I had to try skateboarding having already done quad skating and rollerblading by then. That’s when it started, though I hit a stop pretty quick as once the board I got with such difficulty back then broke in few months. Skateboarding took a back seat until 2010 when my dad got me another board from his visit. However, I started skateboarding again in 2012, the board was just catching dust while I was preparing for my Medical Entrance Exam. So, in the year 2012 is when I started both, skateboarding and 28 MAY, 2018 - TULIP
my first year of MBBS. What were the challenges you faced? Finding a place and people to skate with, I still wish for a skate park in the centre of the city which is accessible to all but more importantly for girls, I am being selfish here, it would be cool to have a girl’s crew to hang out with. Also, during UG years I guess I was always in a fix about prioritising, medical studies or skateboarding. There was a whole lot of studying obviously and there was not much time after college. I usually ended up skating on weekends or sometimes would have to go weeks without it, I may have even done a perfect line of tricks many times, waking up only to find myself buried in books and with exams around the corner. Obviously, there is also the fact about taking a serious fall and mastering the will to commit when trying some trick. Back then it was a problem, but I didn’t know any better and tried anyway. Though having learnt how to fall over years I do hesitate as now my medical knowledge kicks in about possible scenarios and outcomes What advice would you give to all the women out there? If you like something pursue it, surely someday you will find it has become your strength and your weakness and maybe your everything.

Ibrahim and Ishaaq Bukhari, the Managing Directors of Jahanpanah are now the proud sponsors of the IPL team, SunRisers Hyderabad. There are 9 stores in the city with the first one being in Abids and the latest one in Kukatpally, and they plan to reach 20 stores by 2019. “We’ve come a long way from when we first started and wish to go even further. Our motto is to treat our customers like Jahanpanah”, they said. What needs does Jahanpanah cater to? Whether you’re looking for something to wear for a wedding, a housewarming party or a simple get together, you’re sure to find it at Jahanpanah. We cater to the needs of everyone from infants to adults. With the wide variety of styles, colours and patterns, there’s something for everybody. The clothing at Jahanpanah is a fusion of fashion and tradition and that is what sets us apart from the rest. Designers charge upwards of 1.5 lac for a sherwani and you can get the same thing at Jahanpanah for a much more affordable and reasonable price.
You are one of the sponsors for SunRisers Hyderabad, how did that happen? We wanted to sponsor the IPL team, SunRisers Hyderabad, last year as well but for some reasons, it didn’t work out. We were planning to tie up with a local celebrity to be the brand ambassador but that’s when IPL came along and we felt it was a better idea to go with the latter. The trp ratings are very high for IPL and it would be a great platform for us to showcase Jahanpanah. There are usually big, national and international companies that sponsor teams and when we proposed for the sponsorship, people were taken aback. We feel that everyone deserves a chance to grow and be their best self.
How do you stay up to date with the latest trends? We have a number of tie-ups with celebrities, designers and stylists from Delhi and Mumbai and that definitely helps us with staying in the know-how of the latest trends.
Do you enjoy cricket or was it more of a business venture? My brother and I are hardcore fans of cricket. Meeting with all these famous cricketers was really fun and was like a dream come true. The team of SunRisers Hyderabad is loved by the audience; it’s a dynamic group! I absolutely love Shikhar Dhawan. So it definitely wasn’t only a business venture; there were a lot of emotions involved as well. But again, as we’re planning to expand to different cities in India, there’s no better way to showcase Jahanpanah than IPL.
What are the current trends in ethnic fashion? Pastel colours are the in-thing this summer. From asymmetrical cuts, cowl kurtas to two-tone fabric and mix and match styles, men are ready to experiment with everything. Their favourite thing currently is the bandh gala. It’s great that men want to try new things and designs; it gives us the motivation to try new styles and offer as much variety as we can, to them. Our summer collection includes party wear, cotton kurtas, asymmetrical kurtas and much more! We feel that kurtas shouldn’t be restricted to parties as they are versatile and can be styled in several ways.
Where do you see Jahanpanah in five years? In five years, we hope to see Jahanpanah among India’s top ethnic brands. We’re also planning to open stores in Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai very soon so hopefully, there will be a lot more in a span of five years! Rated among top 5 Event Anchors of India & First female DJ of Telangana. My journey as a mother started on the 20th of June 2016. It has almost been two years of experiencing the joys of motherhood. The picture of me holding my newborn after the delivery is still fresh in my mind. It was indeed the happiest day of my life. I started working when I was 16 years old, and earning while studying became second nature to me. And soon, what was just a part-time job became my full-time profession. Anchoring events and performing as a DJ were the two most important roles of my life besides being a daughter and a wife. Never did I know that a responsibility more important than these would be bestowed upon me. When you grow up in an environment where both your parents are working professionals, you tend to adapt to the same routine. So as soon as my baby turned 3 months old, I became restless and wanted to get back to the stage. The perks of working as an anchor or a DJ are that you get to work for not more than 3-4 hours per day and plus you have the liberty to choose your own events. So with the support of my family, I could take time out for my shows. Parenting can become quite challenging and my work, in fact, acts as a refreshing break for me! I am blessed that I have two dream jobs (being a mother & being an anchor /DJ) one that I love and the other, I am passionate about!

Yoga instructor Working moms often worry about how our work life affects or “interferes” with our kids’ lives. The reality is my feelings aren’t all that different from many other moms. It’s never easy being a mom trying to juggle a job/career with a family life. For me, the key is to find the right balance between profession and parenthood. I begin my day after my kids leave for school; I plan it in such a way that am back home before they arrive from school. I keep my weekends off so I can spend most of my time with them. Our weekends are mostly planned in and around them; parks, zoo, play zones etc. I maintain a daily planner and a to-do list, which directs my day. Not only does it give me perspective on the tasks, but it also enables me to anticipate the amount of time and effort that will be required. I plan my schedule especially around the children’s school calendar; their holidays, exams, open days, PTA meetings. Once I mark these out in advance, I plan my schedule accordingly. To all the mothers I would say manage time wisely, you can fit in valuable “me” time regularly. A refreshing break will help you recharge while taking care of personal needs. Because your time is divided between your home and your career, make sure to manage your energy well. You can’t be an effective spouse or parent if you’re cranky, so take time to care for yourself to feel relaxed and effective. Lose yourself in a book before you go to sleep, take a bubble bath once a week, or treat yourself to a spa day. Fit in time for exercise (like a yoga class) or focus on a hobby. Remember to eat well and get enough rest simple things that even the smartest moms neglect. There is no such thing as the perfect father or mother. Mothers actually need to be flawed and imperfect so that they can teach their children the importance of repair; so that their children learn not to fear mistakes and learn the value of repairing or bringing resolution to situations or interactions that are flawed. In this way, if a mother were always perfect and never made mistakes, she would never give her child the opportunity to learn how to forgive, apologize, learn from mistakes, love unconditionally, and be human. In other words, this child would never learn how to be his or her most true self. Imperfection is good.

The thing about being a working mom, in my opinion, is the fact that you’re never going to be able to give 100% percent to both at once. The sooner I accepted this, the more peace I felt. For me, I enjoy the major satisfaction of being good at my work and in the same way I’m filled with the joy of watching my kid take his first steps. I’ve woken up at 5 am to respond to emails, and I’ve left at 3 pm for a doctor’s appointment. Event Manager Traditionally the event management business is considered to be a maledominated space. Long working hours, work over the weekends and high stress are the norm. As a mother of two adorable daughters aged 13 and 9, I don’t believe in this. Balancing family and work is a challenging task for anyone – with working moms it’s tougher. I’m still learning but some techniques have definitely helped me go a long way. Spend time with kids using common areas of interest or work: I love music and early on I realized that introducing music and art forms to my kids would be helpful. In addition to taking kids to classes, I take them along to art events – some of which I need to attend for professional reasons. This way I get to spend more time with them while introducing them to art forms. Today many companies have “bring your family to work” days which are very helpful.
Physical activities with family to relieve stress and bond well: I love running and am an avid long-distance enthusiast. My husband and I ran close to 15 half marathons together and were even awarded the best running couple in 2015 by Hyderabad Runners. Where possible, we involve kids in such activities. As widely researched, physical activities relieve stress. As a mother, exercising as a family provides me twin benefits; relieves my stress while allowing me to spend time with family. Activities like running have also helped us discover families with similar interests and friends for our kids.

A celebrated Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer, famed motivational speaker, acclaimed choreographer, dance scholar and top bureaucrat, Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant is all rolled into one. She is a gutsy woman who has successfully fought a life-threatening malignant disease that generally tends to dispirit its patients. Hyderabad-based Ananda is a phenomenal person who has made classical dance her mainstay and judiciously balances it with the demands of her job as a senior Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer. More importantly, she has greatly succeeded in bringing the two southern classical dances in the realm of popular perception by removing the stamp of obscurity and elitism from them. A recipient of prestigious national honours like the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi award, she has been dancing and propagating her art for more than four decades now. In 1979, she founded Shankarananda Kalakshethra, which has groomed scores of reputed dance students and has been organizing cultural festivals over the years. As a choreographer and performer, Ananda uses dance to talk about gender issues, humour, mythology and philosophy, social issues, poetry and contemporary ideas. The year 2008 saw Ananda face her biggest challenge: she was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, staying positive and focusing on her core strength and passion, Dance, Ananda emerged triumphant from that phase, having fought the disease successfully. “During chemotherapy, I lost my hair, but I was unshaken. I wore a wig and danced; dance is my passion and I am inseparable from it.” A tryst with the disease revealed a new trait in her personality. Ananda now talks and lectures extensively and has gained a reputation as a much sought-after motivational speaker with a busy schedule across corporate houses and charity organizations. She was a TED speaker in 2009, her talk was rated as one of 12 Incredible TED talks on cancer. She has a strong message for women: pursue your interests vigorously and unwaveringly even in the face of daunting obstacles. “Girls get married and tend to get lost in domestic chores and rearing their children. Once they step into their 40s, they are haunted by an identity crisis. It is thus important not to lose your passion in your area of interest,” she notes. Ananda’s dream is to establish a school where she would like to teach children by creating compatibility between art and education. WELLNESS
A Healthy Summer A Senior Paediatrician and Neonatologist practising in Hyderabad since the last 25 years, Dr P. Madan Mohan Rao is a pioneer in child healthcare in twin cities. He did his post-graduation from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1986 and moved to India. He is a consultant to various maternity hospitals in the city and has started an exclusive children’s hospital in the year 2001 (Hope Children’s Hospital) to cater everything needed in paediatrics to children. He was the first doctor in the city to use a surfactant in preterm babies in the year 1994, and presently is one of the leading neonatologists in twin cities. He also was the first to ventilate a neonatal child. At Hope Children’s Hospital, he started the city’s first growth clinic to help children of short stature grow to their full potential height. More recently, he also started an exclusive dog bite clinic and travel vaccination clinic, the first of its kind in a private sector, in the state.
How can to ensure that a child is getting a healthy diet and exercising enough? Having three to four meals per day is crucial. Make sure the meals include rice/roti, vegetables, dal, egg, paneer and leafy vegetables. They can also have two to three snacks which can be seasonal fruits and homemade sweets. Make sure they have plenty of water throughout the day. Children’s weight and height should be monitored and can be done by plotting it on the charts. How to prevent heat exhaustion and heatstroke? Avoid going out from 10 am to 4 pm during summer as that’s when the sun is at its strongest. Drinking lots of water is a must; you should have 2-3 litres per day. You can also have fresh fruit juices and buttermilk. Keep your exercises short and simple; long and strenuous exercises can easily dehydrate and exhaust you. What are some types and symptoms of food and water-borne diseases and how to prevent them? Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhoea or stomach flu is caused by contaminated food or water. Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. Fever, lack of energy and dehydration may also occur. Eating home cooked food, washing hands often and staying hydrated can help prevent gastroenteritis. Dysentery is an intestinal infection which is also caused by contaminated food and water. Its main symptom is bloody stools. Abdominal pain and cramps, fever and malaise are some of the other symptoms. Medical care is required for bloody diarrhoea such as antibiotics and IV fluids. It can be prevented by increased fluid intake and proper hydration.
How can we avoid skin rashes? Furuncles and boils are very common during summer. Overall general hygiene like showering regularly and frequently washing hands throughout the day plays an important role in avoiding skin rashes. Tips to prevent common illnesses among children during summer: There must be a proper intake of liquids every day. Not just water, consider all fluids including fresh fruit juices, coconut water and buttermilk. Have plenty of water before and after exercising. Try to stay indoors during the peak hours. It’s best to avoid direct sunlight and hot air currents. Opt for homemade food over junk food as much as possible. Suhair Sayeed has done her B.A in Fashion Design and Technology and was a gold medalist in school. She was born in Hyderabad and grew up doing her schooling and higher education in Dubai which is why most of her work has a touch of Arabic designs. She started The Plush Boutique 4 years ago which has turned out to be remarkably successful! How did you get into fashion designing? Is it something you’ve always wanted to do? My dad has been in the fashion industry since 1981 but specialises in Arabic clothing. Seeing him I was always attracted towards designing. The way he played with fabrics and colours inspired me a lot and that’s why I chose to get into fashion designing. It really brings out your creativity and makes you want to do better every time. How did Plush Boutique start? How has your journey been? We started off in November 2014. My whole idea was to offer the people of Hyderabad designs featuring authentic Hyderabadi taste along with a hint of western and Arabic style. It wasn’t an easy journey as I was new to the place since I lived all my life in the UAE and therefore it was a challenge for me understand the market and get my workshops and other operations all up in running. But now, after all this time, all my hard work has really paid off! What inspires you when designing? The fascinating part for me when I’m doing an outfit is when I meet up with my clients and listen to their whole story. I always give as much time as they require to explain to me as to how exactly they want their outfit to look, while my mind running parallel putting my ideas together to create their dream bridal outfit. My aim for every order is to see clients smile and laugh with joy when they drop in for their final trial. That’s when I feel I have won it. How do you manage your personal and professional life? That’s a tricky question there! My husband plays a big role here. He has been more supportive than ever and I am blessed to have a chance to share my life with him. And my parents! I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for them! Some tips on summer clothing? In summers I would suggest going for the lightest fabrics available on the shelf. Pure fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk are a great option. It’s better to go for light and pastel colours rather than dark ones. What are your favourite current trends for summer? Personally, I don’t believe in following trends. I love to wear my own, signature outfits as they’re nothing like the others you find in stores. I believe it’s better to stand out than blend in with the crowd! Address : Janaki Nagar Colony, Gate No.3, Opp. Masjid-E-Sufa, Tolichowki. Ph : +91 8686712300

Welcoming
Ramadan!
I
It’s that time of the year we all wait for so eagerly; Ramadan! It is during this month where a person truly challenges himself and his addictions and says no to eating and drinking. It is during Ramadan where we sympathize with those who do not have, we share with them, we feed them, we help and support them. The atmosphere during these 30 days is something magical; there’s lots of love and happiness all around us. It’s hard not to give in to your urges and want to have a small piece of the lavish spread, with mouth-watering haleem, before iftaar and it’s hard to wake up for suhoor, it’s heartstopping when you wake up for suhoor and realize that there are only ten minutes left to eat! But, at the end of the day, it’s all worth it; sitting with your entire family and breaking the fast together and listening to how your sibling almost had a sip of water when they forgot they were fasting. Then finally, the best day comes; Eid! You get all dressed up, celebrate with your near and dear ones and eat lots of sheerkhorma! We’ve asked people to share with us what they love about Ramadan and have also listed some of the most popular places in town which serve the best haleem! - By Rabica Zulfiqar

Sherin Alam,
Homemaker Ramzaan is one of the most auspicious months where we try to become a better version of ourselves. I really like the whole festive vibe in Ramzaan. From waking up in the morning for suhoor to breaking the fast in the evening and going for prayers; I love it all! There are countless things which make Ramzaan so special and so close to my heart. From buying new clothes to family parties and gifting your loved ones, Eid preparations are as exciting as Eid itself. I believe that Ramzaan is a blessing from Allah. The fact that my entire family gets together for iftaar makes it all the more special!
Raunaq Yar Khan,
Doctorate in Community Harmony I’m the hereditary caretaker of Masjid-e-Naziria at the dead end of Ronald Ross road. I enjoy doing up the mosque, just like my late mother would do it. I feel such satisfaction knowing she would be so pleased that I’m continuing her traditions. But Eid namaz has an accepted tradition that it’s to be prayed at a point furthest from ones dwelling, so you get acquainted with others from your own community that you don’t meet often. (Fridays are for mixing with neighbours).
Afshan Taiyebi, Fashion
Designer My favourite part about Ramadan is the festivity. The holy month fills the hearts of people with warmth and love for everyone. I plan to celebrate Eid with my family and loved ones and of course some sheer-qorma goodness! What I love about Ramadan the most is that people conquer their inner demons, even if it is only for a month and they become more generous towards the needy. This month simply brings out the best in people.
Taher Ali Baig, Theatre Writer/Director
My favourite part about Ramzaan are the Iftaar parties and host the best ones where we invite people from different faiths. Aren’t we all children of God? Ramzaan is my favourite month; the fasting, the sacrifice and the sentiment of belonging, the feeling of being human, which is an attempt to self realization and become a better person. I feel pure, clean, happy and content during this holy month. We get to spend some quality time with family and host dawat-e-eid for friends. We are all so engulfed in our lives through the year that Eid is a day that marks some exclusive time with family and friends who we haven’t met in a long time. It’s that one important day for reunions and how can we forget the feasts?! Ramzaan, for me, brings us closer to our neighbours and the community at large. It’s a period of retrospection and how better I can be as a human and serve the community better. How we can all make an effort to forego our bad habits and try to be more charitable, where we have the desire to help others; the poor and the homeless. Ramzaan also signifies a month of spiritual rejuvenation for me. TULIP - MAY, 2018 53

Tell your story with tattoos BEAUTY
In recent years tattoos have become increasingly popular. People get a tattoo for various reasons; while some get them for the art, some might get them just because they look good. It’s just another way to express yourself; something like makeup or clothes. Whether you choose to get a matching tattoo with a friend or a family member or choose to cover up a scar or get it as a memorial, it will always have the power to take you back in time and remind you exactly of where you were – physically, mentally and emotionally, at that point in life. One day, years from now, you look down at your arm and see that little tattoo, and all of those happy memories come flooding back to you. It has got the power to transform and renew, to give you something to cherish for the rest of your life. - By Rabica Zulfiqar Pinku Bijoy Ghosh has been professionally tattooing for about 10 years and runs a tattoo studio named Inkkraft Tattoos. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated with art. My journey began in the year 2008 before which I used to work with my in the jewellery design business. I was not too content with what I was doing at that time so thought of giving tattooing a chance. When I got my first tattoo, it made me extremely happy! That’s when I decided to spread the same happiness. I enrolled myself as an apprentice under Shoryuken tattoo headed by artist Kevin Andrade and that’s how my journey towards being a tattoo artist began”, he says.
What are some reasons people get tattoos? It’s amazing that tattoos in current times have become a rage. People get it to celebrate a moment or it’s a medium through which they choose to express themselves. What are the current trends? Currently, travel based tattoos are highly trending. Tattoos dedicated to one’s parents, Lord Shiva and the Buddha are favorites and also small tattoos like infinity symbol and anchor are very popular among the masses. What precautions should be taken before and after getting a tattoo? I suggest everyone out there who’s looking to get their first tattoo should conduct a thorough research on the artist and the studio. It’s very important to go through the artists work and check their respective studio and get a professional consultation done with the artist prior to the tattoo. Normally people make the mistake of choosing an artist who charges very low. Chances are you might regret your tattoo in the long run as good tattoos are not cheap and cheap tattoos are not good. So choose wisely as tattoos will remain with you forever. One should not be under the influence of any drug or alcohol before getting a tattoo. They also shouldn’t come on an empty stomach. It’s important that you eat well and drink a lot of water just before getting your tattoo. After the tattoo one should follow the instructions given by the artist such as, not scratching the tattoo while it’s healing, moisturising it daily once the scabs have formed and keeping it away from direct sunlight for first few days. What are some of the side effects of getting a tattoo? One will not have any side effects if it’s done in a professional tattoo studio. Like I’ve said before, thorough research and asking your friends about the best studios will help. Normally there aren’t any infections through tattoos; it’s very safe as we provide you with the most hygienic environment. Also, the tattoos are done with best of equipment. Dravid has been nominated for successfully guiding the India U-19 team to World Cup title early this year. Under his guidance, the Colts batch of 2016 played the finals. He has worked with India A team also and is the bridge between international and junior cricket. BCCI had stopped sending nominations for Dronacharya awards due to multiple coaches’ at times claiming credit for a player’s success. As per Kohli’s nomination for Khel Ratna, it has been learnt that BCCI has nominated the Indian captain for the second time. Kohli’s name was sent in 2016 but being the Olympic year, the three stars of Rio, PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Deepa Karmakar were conferred with the award.
Mahesh Babu’s latest movie ‘Bharat Ane Nenu’ has been gaining amazing response from all over the world, ever since it hit the screens. The movie has been winning appreciation from the telugu film fraternity as well. Almost all top Tollywood celebs watched and shared their review on social media. Recently Venkatesh took to his twitter handle and wrote, “watched Bharat Ane nenu... Fantastic performance by Mahesh babu. Siva Koratala handeled a sensible subject in a very appreciable way.. Take a bow. Congratulations to Danayya garu and the entire team.” In the film directed by Koratala Siva, Mahesh is seen playing the CM of Andhra Pradesh, who is educated abroad, and is forced into politics. The film has Kiara Advani as the female lead and Prakash Raj as the antagonist.
Gautam Gambhir steps down as Captain for Delhi Daredevils
Cricket captains who happen to be Indian rarely step down on the lack of a run of poor form from him or his team. After leading Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the Indian Premier League of 2012 and 2014, former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir quit as captain of Delhi daredevils citing non-performance and the team’s dismal run, in which they have suffered fifth loss in six games this season. Daredevils coach Ricky Ponting says Gambhir deserves credit for the decision.

MOVIES Movie Reviews
October Shoojith Sircar’s ‘October’ says a lot, without saying too much. Yes, It is a film about love, see from Dan’s pure and simple world and Shuili’s silent, stoic stares. It’s not a story crafted with heavy doses of dialogues, romantic ballads or bombastic episodes common to the genre. The beauty lies in the simplicity of it all. This movies is about Dan (Varun Dhawan), a student of hotel management and an intern at a top hotel in Delhi along with his batch mates. Everything goes good until an incident occurs at the hotel where one of his collegues Shiuli (Banita Sandhu), lands up at hospital. This affects Dan far deeply than ever imagined, and thereon, he embarks on an emotional journey where he seeks answers and love is the strangest of all circumstances. Shoojith Sircar breathes life into every scene with his nuanced direction. The film unfolds at a leisurely pace, but never lacks spirit. The film is not devoid of light humour, it is slipped into the narrative so seamlessly that it will leave you surprised. October is not bound by Indian sensibility alone; it is a humane story that will possibly enjoy a much wider appeal across international audience. A Quiet Place As genres go, horror is particularly challenging to crack. It’s easy to resort to cheap scares to get audience jumping out of their seats. On the other hand, it takes an evolved set of storytelling skills to make them genuinely uncomfortable and fearful for the events unfolding on screen. Actor, co-writer and director John Krasinki seems to understand this thoroughly, and the result is an unnerving film. The premise is intriguing – in the near future, humans are viciously hunted down by mysterious creature equipped with a heightened sense of sound. Their only weakness is that they are blind. Kransinki uses this to create a dreadful sense of atmosphere throughout the movie. The rules that exist in this universe are established early on with minimal exposition. After all, the characters can’t communicate with each other openly. The sound design play a significant role in creating a heightened sense of dread and tension throughout as the conversations are primarily restricted to sign language. Better still watch this alone or choose your partner carefully to watch this movie with.
Rangasthalam In the fictional village of Rangasthalam which means stage, resides a motley crew of colourful characters. First up the innocent Chitti Babu, a hot-headed soul who remains blissfully unaware of the chaos that surrounds him. Kumar Babu, his brother, is the complete opposite. Rangasthalam genuinely takes you back to the 80s and hits you with a massive dose of nostalgia – radios and record dances galore. The film is not just set in the 80s; it also picks a story template from that era and narrates the tale in a refreshingly raw manner. The director Sukumar must be credited for fleshing out the characters well enough that they don’t seem like caricatures of bygone era. The movie is about Chitti Babu (Ram Charan) who is a partially deaf, happy-go-lucky man who doesn’t let his disability deter him. His brother Kumar Babu(Aadhi Pinisetty) returns from Dubai only to see that nothing has changed in his village. What happens when he decides to go up against the dreaded President garu(Jagapathi Babu)?

BOOKS An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
Many couples have a safe word to call time-out from rough sex or to stop a conversation from going into that too hurtful place. For happily married Celestial and Roy, it is two words: “November 17,” the anniversary of their first date. When Roy utters these words in the midst of a fight with Celestial, it’s impossible to fathom the repercussions of trying to do the right thing. That night, Roy is wrongly accused of committing a violent crime, and later sentenced to twelve years in prison. What follows is a tender and propulsive story set in the New South about honoring love and family while daring to imagine a brighter future.
The Gunners By Rebecca Kauffman
One day, high schooler Sally Forrest cuts contact with her five best friends and refuses to speak to them or acknowledge them in the hallway. The tight-knit group, now a member down, call themselves “The Gunners,” inspired by the name on the letterbox of an abandoned house they commandeered as their clubhouse headquarters—the place where they invented jokes and games and secret languages, bad-mouthed their parents, plotted against bullies, bickered, made up, and dreamed of the lives they would one day live far from their Buffalo. When Sally dies 15 years later the group reunites for her funeral (reminiscent of The Big Chill) and grapple with losing her a second time. This story examines how the secrets held and harbored by friends, and the defining relationships of childhood and adolescence, never fully leave us.
Meaty By Samantha Irby
To put it simply: Samantha Irby is one of the funniest people on the planet. Following the success of her 2017 collection of essays, We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, Irby revisits her 2013 debut, Meaty, which follows Irby’s dizzyingly hilarious stumbles through early adulthood. The author’s note not only gives you an idea of what to expect from the book, but also offers a brilliant caveat: “I didn’t just slap an adorable new cover on the same piece of garbage you bought a few years ago to try to trick you out of couch-cushion money you could have otherwise been spending on beer,” Irby writes. “This turd has been polished!” One woman’s turd is certainly another’s treasure.

Your personal focus is like a razor’s edge this month. Family responsibilities and involvement may take you away from the personal desires and plans. Don’t struggle with the challenges or try to escape the duties. You are actually at a point in which you can release some old childhood memory or limitation. Sitting patiently with family issues can bring true release by late June. Keep those personal goals as dreams. The moment will come when you can forge ahead – you know like you always do.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
Forecast For MAY 2018
CANCER June 21 - July 22
It may seem that life resembles a boulder blocking the mouth of a cave. That would be a cave that is holding you, prisoner. This is a good time to do an assessment of the past months. Check off the events. What wisdom have you gained during this time? What are the new responsibilities that you have gained mastery over? Yes, life may continue to be heavy like a boulder but remind yourself often that you are in this world but not of it. The wisdom you have gained now are tickets to holding yourself upright, bold and regal while saying, ‘I AM.’ Congratulations.
Happy Birthday to the zodiac’s most steadfast sign! This is indeed your birthday month and this means that not only do you celebrate a special day but a special month all month long. The planetary positions now bring promises for the year ahead. Awareness is your keyword for this upcoming year. People and circumstances enter your life now that open you up to new experiences in relating. That means your relationships take on new meaning. This would be all kinds of relationships: intimate, friendship, family and the world-at-large. Travel is certainly amped up for you and there is much learning to be gained from those travels. So keep your diary ready for a journal entry. You may decide to sign up for a course of study that will make changes in your learning curve. Now that would be awareness, wouldn’t it? Happy Birthday, Dear One.
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
Is it your money, my money or our money? That question is spinning in your grey matter. Because dollars are often used as a mental stimulus for you, that question bears no threat. Rather it promises a new way of looking at resources and how to use them. Try something different this month with money. Close your eyes and try to ‘feel’ for your answers. This means you don’t think your way through, you feel your way through. Who knows, you may come up with a new way of making decisions.
VIRGO August 23 - September 22 AQUARIUS January 20 - February 18 The river of life continues to move in uncertain rhythms and tides. Along with those uncertainties lie frustrations and puzzlement, perhaps to the point of tears. How unlike you, Dear Aquarius. There must be some divine message in these experiences. If you would give yourself permission to be sensitive, soft, transparent, clairvoyant, slightly confused, emotionally vulnerable and receptive, you would take a quantum leap into a new world. Once you are there you can lead others to new freedoms. Isn’t that what your life is all about? 78 MAY, 2018 - TULIP
Ask any artist how to paint and they will tell you first to back away from the canvas and second to find your perspective point. Your perspective point is now found in backing away from the everyday grind and having good old down home philosophical discussions with many people. Be sure to choose to talk with some experts. You can’t learn too much now, see too much or travel too far. Your mind is like a central switchboard until June. You are on a quest for truth. What you find are the colours and hues that fill your life canvas. Nice.

After the 18th of May, you will have a chance to journey backwards. At first, it may seem like your drive has become like milk-toast. It is, however, the reverse. You indeed will have entered a sort of Alice-inWonderland kind of experience. And like Alice, you may go it alone. There will be questions. Should I take the blue pill or the red pill? Should I follow the white rabbit or stand in place? By late June, you will simply come to realize, like Alice, that mind power is only as vast as your imagination and adaptability.
Seek out a guru this month. You will recognize them as he or she will have considerable dignity and psychological strength. They will have a clear understanding of the responsibility that mirrors your own. You will find a level of friendship here that calls out to the inner child in you. In turn, this connection will allow you to play the guru role for someone younger or less experienced than yourself. Before the month is over, take a break; even rock benefits from a change of scenery every once in a while.
There is uniqueness in friendships this month. Reconnect with old friends and be open to the cultivation of new friendships. Don’t pick and choose. Rather stay open and let others pick and choose you. You may pull in some questionable characters. But they come as teachers even though they aren’t aware of their role. Additionally, open up to group activities. You may find yourself acting as a leader. Use the golden rule now. Love unconditionally and remember, to feel loved you must love. You will receive accolades from those you do love.
If no one was watching and you knew that you would not be judged, would you let your hair down and play? Why not dedicate this month to doing just that – playing? The energies are right for the experience and you will find playmates. They may come as new friends, confidants or a new lover. Reach out for the experience and regain that youthful glow. As a side note: late in the month, resources will be made available to you. Go ahead and make your want list now.
It may not be clear at the moment but your actions are setting you up for career success. Keep your network connections active even though they may look like they are dragging. Wherever you encounter challenges, know that they will turn toward fortune in some basic way. Be sure to contact authority figures after the 10th of May. The more contacts that are made the greater the pay-off. Your partners bring in rewards and gifts to you now. Be sure to express your gratitude in a very special way.
Can you hum that tune, ‘On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’? This is the tune you should hum all month. The image for you during May is a ride in a hot air balloon over a calm sea of water. Don’t do any complaining, moaning or groaning. Instead count your blessings, for indeed you are in planetary graces. And those graces set you free. They allow you to be extraordinarily creative and vastly intuitive. So be honest. Do you really have anything to complain about? Not-Ta!
