GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE

We finished a busy June with both courses receiving their first of two aerifications. The area had several severe storms come through that made life a little more difficult for our Maintenance Team. Overall, we lost sixteen trees between both courses along with severe damage to multiple others. As we head into July, we are excited about the events around the Club and hope that you can join us if you are in town. 6 at 6 continues to gain momentum and is a wonderful way for you to get to know your fellow Members in a fun and friendly competition every Thursday through August We are looking forward to our One Day Member Guest on Wednesday, July 26 as well

The Clubhouse refresh is winding down with a couple of the on-course restrooms receiving additional upgrades and fresh paint. New signage has been installed across the Clubhouse and a new 90-ton chiller was finally delivered and installed. We have ordered new trash enclosures for the areas around the club and on course as well as new bag stands. We expect those to be here by the end of August as we continue to make improvements across the Club. The nominations for the Advisory Board are now closed and we are excited to introduce the new Advisory Board later this month. Thank you to everyone who volunteered or nominated a fellow Member. Thank you for being a member.

COURSE MAINTENANCE

June and July are when the turf on greens, tees, and fairways become tough Ed keeps all cutting units ground and adjusts for the best possible cut quality As we recover from greens aerification, we see that the Calcium Sulfate is working as anticipated Nutrients chemically bound to the soil are being released, and the plant is taking it up As a result, growth rates are accelerated We are careful to increase plant growth regulator rates due to naturally occurring bronzing Our biggest hurdle is controlling the off-type grass growth in the Tif Eagle on the Member Course In normal conditions, we can see the puffed-up areas of off type Now, we see scalping of the off type in many places on the Member Course We will constantly top dress lightly to raise the canopy in the scalped areas Some of the worst areas are on the center-left #1, middle #6, most of #11, and most of #15

We will continue to verticut fairways on both courses into mid-July We also plan to continue to solid tine aerify all fairways on both courses We will focus on high-traffic areas with additional fertilization and aerification The weaker areas on both courses are from grass other than the TifSport, which was initially planted The weakest turf is likely to be common Bermuda brought in as sod after one of the many Houston Opens Additional fertilizer is applied every 3-4 weeks throughout the growing season to enhance turf quality Growth regulators are applied every 21 days to shorten the distance between the nodes and leaf length

Summertime irrigation management should be better than in 2022 Last year at this time, our effluent water transfer pump went down The drought had also been going on since the end of March We did receive a new transfer pump allowing us to get back to a normal irrigation practice Our goal during this time of year is to irrigate moderately early in the week and then pull cycles down to enhance playing conditions from Thursday through Sunday The goal is Firm and Fast with no mud on the ball

Tournament Course bunker sand update: The Arkansas sand company has been sold to new owners We are in line for 100 tons as soon as production is available

CHEF'S CORNER

FEATURED RECIPE

Grilled Romaine-Shrimp Salad with Corn and Avocado

INGREDIENTS:

4 romaine hearts, cut in half lengthwise olive oil for brushing (or use olive oil spray)

2 ear corn, shucked

2 lemons (cut in half)

1 pound large shrimp peeled and deveined tossed in olive oil and herbs

2 avocados diced

2 pint cherry or grape tomatoes, cut in half

fresh chopped Italian parsley

Lemon Dressing:

8 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoon lemon juice

2 teaspoon honey or agave

1 teaspoon salt

2 garlic cloves, minced

Steps:

Preheat grill to med high. Whisk dressing ingredients together and set aside. Brush or spray romaine with olive oil, and season with salt, then grill each side briefly (leave lid open) until good grill marks appear, but not so long that lettuce loses its crunch. Set these on a platter, large cutting board or sheet pan

Grill the lemon (cut side down), corn on the cob, and shrimp (about 3mins per side) over medium heat

Cut the kernels off the corn and divide Add the diced avocado and halved cherry tomatoes and shrimp,

Squeeze the lemon over salad and spoon a little dressing over top. Sprinkle with fresh herbs.

McMyler Wins the Women’s Southern Golf Association’s Amateur; Nunn Makes History in the Mid-Amateur

Our Club had the opportunity to host the Women’s Southern Golf Association--one of the longest running women ’ s amateur organizations in the country The second week of June brought both the 2023 WSGA Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championships played simultaneously on the Tournament Course The action started with a one-day qualifier for seeding into championship and secondary flights, and the next three days featured Match Play to determine the winner of both marquee events. The competition was fierce and by the end of the last day of competition, the two champions were crowned Our Members will remember a familiar name Emma McMyler, who claimed victory in the 101st Women’s Texas Amateur a mere eleven months ago It took 19 holes to defeat Grace Jin, the tournament’s number one seed who fired a staggering 64 in the qualifying round Lucy Nunn captured the Mid-Amateur title with her victory over Dawn Woodard in a 5 & 3 margin

Connie Bousquet, WSGA President complimented our entire team for their hosting role “On behalf of the WSGA , I just wanted to thank you and your staff for the wonderful first class Championships GCOH afforded us! The course was in great shape and enjoyed by all, the food was perfect, a true taste of Texas! The service always prompt, efficient and with a smile! I have received many compliments from players saying all of this. Your expertise was outstanding and so very helpful to make this one of Southern's BEST Championships

Thank you!”

Kudos to our entire team for a great job!

WELLNESS

ARROWFIT

Rest is Best

Sometimes we get busy, and our self-care takes a backseat Irregular sleep patterns or poor sleep quality can significantly impact your physical and mental health There are consequences to poor sleep, but there are ways to manage it

Impaired cognitive function: Sleep plays a crucial role in cognitive processes such as attention, concentration, problemsolving, and memory formation Lack of proper sleep can impair these functions, leading to decreased productivity and difficulty learning and retaining information

Weakened immune system: Sleep deprivation can compromise the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections, viruses, and chronic illnesses

Cardiovascular problems: Chronic sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality has been linked to an increased risk of hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, stroke, and irregular heartbeat

Weight gain and metabolic issues: Poor sleep patterns disrupt the balance of hormones that regulate appetite, increasing the likelihood of overeating and weight gain It can also lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, and other metabolic disturbances

Increased risk of chronic conditions: Irregular or inadequate sleep has been associated with a higher risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer

Accelerated aging: Chronic sleep problems have been linked to premature aging, including developing wrinkles, fine lines, and a dull complexion

Improving sleep quality involves adopting healthy sleep habits and creating an environment conducive to good sleep Here are three ways to quickly enhance sleep quality:

Avoid using electronic devices close to bedtime The blue light emitted by these devices can significantly interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Enjoy regular physical activity during the day but try to finish exercising at least a few hours before bedtime. Exercise promotes better sleep, but intense physical activity too close to bedtime can have a stimulating effect.

Magnesium plays a vital role in promoting relaxation and sleep. Low magnesium levels are associated with difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and poor sleep quality. Good food sources of magnesium include green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes.
