Mayor’s Message Welcome to the Fall 2013 edition of our Parks and Recreation Active Living Guide. Please use the guide to find out more about our high quality programs offered this fall. Fall is a time to start anew and refocus on those things that are important in life. Whether going back to school, starting a new job, or making other life changes, leisure and fitness helps us through these changes by reducing stress and increasing health and happiness. Staying on the theme of change, we will be seeing a transformation in the coming months at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. The atrium and reception area will both be updated and our senior’s room will see an upgrade as well. These changes will provide more room for our recreation programs. Watch for these upgrades this fall, as well as improvements at the Archie Browning Sports Centre. The recent improvements at Memorial Park – which build on the walkway project completed in our centennial year – will further enhance this central and historic park, which is a designated Heritage Site. Don’t forget that walkway pavers are still available for sale if you wish to honour a friend or family member in this special way. Add to this the regreening efforts by parks department staff along our streets and boulevards – with the financial assistance of a BC Hydro Regreening Grant – and you begin to see the scale of Township infrastructure and beautification efforts. Speaking of beautification, thank you to everyone who participated in the Bloomin’ Beautiful Home and Garden Contest. The contest is a continuing legacy of our “Esquimalt Shines” centennial home and garden contest, and was a chance for all residents to share in the common effort of beautifying their community. Thanks also to parks staff for their outstanding efforts in organizing the contest.

When I review all that is happening and has been achieved, I am very proud of our community and of the work of the Parks and Recreation Department.

On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore our many wonderful parks and take advantage of our upgraded recreation facilities.

Come & pay us a visit!
The advent of the 100th anniversary of World War I is almost upon us. By the fall of 1914, thousands of young Canadians had taken up the call to arms. Over 400,000 Canadians would eventually serve overseas in what would be called “The War to End All Wars,” many of them from Esquimalt. The first Canadian troops to arrive in France were the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, formed at the outbreak of the war and a regiment with a close connection to Esquimalt. Work Point Barracks became a key training centre. Private Charles Durfee Harper, reported in 1917 that “Each man has a cot, straw mattress, pillow, two sheets and four blankets and a shelf over his cot and pegs for his uniforms. The building is of brick with lots of windows – light, snug and warm. Our room is heated by a coal stove and also has two open fire places. It is pretty cozy, in the evenings, to sit about the fire studying.” This would prove to be a far cry from the death and disease of the Western Front. The Archives has information on the men and women from Esquimalt who served in World War I. We are dedicated to preserving this and all aspects of our community’s heritage and you can help. If you have material that could help us tell this story, please let us know. Also, we are very interested in finding city directories from the 1950s and 1960s. Did you know, the Archives can help you research your family, your house, your neighbourhood and other interests?
