BT Comic Relief Brings Smiles to The Notleys & Canons Brook Golf Clubs

A

s part of the Comic Relief (www.rednoseday.com) activities this year from within British Telecom (BT), Phil Redhead from The Notleys Golf Club, and Chairman of the Jubilee Cup, hosted a wide range of Essex and East Anglian folk at Canons Brook Golf Club (www.canonsbrook.com) for a round of golf all for a great cause, in a new tradition stemming back from the inaugural game a number of years ago. Nearly thirty golfers from a variety of backgrounds in and outside of BT came together to raise £500 for Comic Relief – contributing to the £71 million of charitable donations in 2017 on Red Nose Day night, and over £1 billion raised so far for Comic Relief causes. Phil wishes to thank a number of groups who participated in the success of the event – not just BT staff from Business & Public Sector, Global Services, BT Security, and Openreach, but the members of The Notleys Golf Club (including ex- Captain Kevin Whybrew), Crondon Park, Gosfield Lakes GC, and the Seniors Touring Amateur Golf Society (STAGS - www.stagsgolf.org.uk), plus the BT Research Golf Society (www.btrgs.org.uk) which also supports ex-BT members. The event was truly a cross-county event, with players not just from Essex, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk as our core teams, but even a visitor from Surrey (The Wisley). The event was eventually won by Sean Lahiff, with second place split between Surrey’s Derek “Sanchez” Cribb, and Gosfield Lakes’ Mick Marsh. BT Openreach’s Joe Fielder left the day with the much coveted Wooden Spoon (score with-held to remove embarrassment ...) The team -2-

honours went to the cross-county team of BT’s Roger Mayhew, Phil Redhead, Derek Cribb, and Cambridge’s Simon Cheney (www.breadandmeat.co.uk) Well done to Sean, and also a MASSIVE amount of thanks to Joanne Slater and the team from Canons Brook who presented an excellent pre and post golf meal, as well as a lovely course and venue to play at which enabled us to maximise both our playing enjoyment and our charity donations. Especial thanks to the friendly marshals who saw us around for the day, and the chef for a great meal too. Phil is shown here in his Comic Relief red nose, and he was wearing the obligatory Plus Four trousers for good effect also on the day, with many others sporting charity T-shirts for an excellent charitable cause. Phil Redhead, Notleys Golf Club

Colchester Golf Club CHAPS I

an Devenish won Colchester Golf Club’s CHAPS Stableford. Returning 40 points he just got the better of Dan Nicholls after a countback. Played out on a bright early March day with the long promised rain gratefully absent Devenish had constructed for himself a very workable round which ended with some outstanding holes. With four bogies and a double on the front nine sixteen handicapper Devenish turned with 20 points but his back nine started with some uncertainty, with him clocking three bogies in the first four holes but a superb finish from the 14th with a birdie thrown in on the 16th gave him a strong back nine and the countback win. The Club has supported the CHAPS charity for fourteen years. It is a local charity set up to raise awareness and support the development of health services directly targeted at men in Colchester. In a week where again over 100 members were on the start sheet, second placed Nicholls had put in an impressive round. Starting with a bogey on the first hole, which was quickly

counter balanced by a birdie on the second, he then pared every hole with the sixteenth being the costly exception where he bogeyed. His gross 71 was a round to remember for the five handicapper. Two players shared 39 points. Taking third place and playing off a three handicap was Cai James. He returned the lowest gross of the day with a 70. He was two under par after the first nine but bogeys on the twelfth and thirteenth pegged him back to a notable par equalling round. Daniel Harness (17) also returned 39 points with four players returning 38 points. They were Jason Nicholls (0), Harry Hills (5), Scot Farthing (18) and Steve Bozier (12).

COLCHESTER A

s you read this the ‘Masters’ is currently happening or has happened! Either way it is a sign within our industry that the season is under way.

For us the season has already kick in and thanks to yourselves we have had a record first 3 months (not bad considering we’ve been going for 23 years)! Easter is a bit later this year which is where most clubs start their big competitions. Here at Nevada Bobs I thought it might be of uses if I go through what is starting to sell really well already. Skechers Shoes: This is our second year for stocking them and being our number 1 seller last year it is currently our number !! If you have not heard of them or tried them they are instant comfort, wide fitting and plenty of different choices! Callaway Epic Driver: Who would have thought a top end driver would come out as one of our best sellers. However with our Skytrac ball tracker system in our driving bay it is proving not only extra length but is keeping straighter than most peoples own driver!! Underarmour Clothing: In the men's range this year it is again proving a number one seller. Great syles, different layers and a top selling trouser to go with it. Srixon Irons: With a number of different choices and the ability to mix and match the different sets it has proved a top selling iron. Again you will get a better idea when comparing your irons against these. Ladies Clothing: We have introduced 3 new brands this year and all 3 have sold well. Rohnisch, Puma and Footjoy are all different to each other but give a great choice of colour and styles. Finally Balls! We are continuing with our offers on 2015/16 Z Stars, and a ‘buy one get one half price’ on AD333, Soft feel (men’s and ladies) and Ultra Soft in White which makes great value for 2 dozen balls. Hopefully you know where we are and if we can help in any way, please come and visit.

New Head Professional at Theydon Bois Golf Club In my newly-stocked shop I offer a full and comprehensive range of equipment and clothing , and a range of clubs that can be fully custom fitted with my launch monitor. I would like to thank Theydon members for welcoming me so warmly, and I look forward to introducing new golfers, members and visitors to this lovely club in the heart of Epping Forest. Theydon Bois is a very friendly golf club, run by its members, where everyone is welcomed to come and play. For enquiries or to book please call 01992 813054 Jack Kennedy, Chairman of Theydon Bois Golf Club adds: ‘It’s positive and refreshing for us to be able to appoint a young professional with such a wide range of skills and experience. We know that Kevin will help us develop Theydon Bois over the coming years to even greater success than it has today. We all wish him the very best for his future with us’.

Frinton GC Elects New Officers

T K

evin Delaney – new Head Professional at Theydon Bois Golf Club writes ... Having been a qualified golf pro for 12 years , and having gained a wide range of experience working under the guidance of Terry Moncur at Langdon Hills, I am both delighted and excited to start this new role as Head Professional at Theydon Bois - a golf course that is not only steeped in history and tradition , but which holds a refreshing and forward-thinking attitude to its future, and the future of golf. It’s one which I share and look forward to developing further. Teaching is my passion, and I am already enjoying giving lessons to both members and people who live in the area – from golfers on single-figure handicaps to absolute, and often slightly nervous, beginners. I am also looking forward to growing the junior section of the club by way of regular junior group lessons and holiday camps.

he turnout was impressive at Frinton’s AGM on Saturday. Club members met to elect new captains, General Committee members and honorary officers. The new club captain is David Joshua, a man who has served the Club in many capacities over the years. Simon Martin-Redman was voted in as men’s vice captain. Marilyn Clarke is the new ladies captain, with Margaret Dean as her second in charge. New members to the General Committee are Loraine Motion, Colin Marsh, Roy Stevenson and Peter Irwin. Graeme Dodds was elected Chairman of the Club. Nicki Coates continues as Honorary Solicitor, with Ian Chamberlain reinstated as Honorary Treasurer. Both have served the Club in these positions for many years. Current President Malcolm Withycombe was re-elected, a welldeserved result. Following reports on accounts and discussion of resolutions to change rules, the new captains had their ‘Drive Ins.’ Both results were quite impressive.

GET PIN HIGH MORE OFTEN Everybody hits there iron shots left and right. But one of the keys to hitting more greens is to get level with the pin more often. Here are some simple ideas. GET YOUR DISTANCES CHECKED ON A LAUNCH MONITOR - Most facilties will have a a launch montior these days which will give you the accurate distances you hit all of your clubs and takes about an hour.. Its great technology and definatley something to take advantage of.

GET A DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE You can get a range finder or GPS which will help you get accurate distances and you can start to make better decisions about what club to use. Alan Wins Colchester’s First Individual Men’s Competition of the Year

A

lan Hyde kept his head above water to win Colchester Golf Club’s Cystic Fibrosis Stableford, Colchester’s first individual men's competition of the year. The competition marks the start of the Club's extensive golfing programme, which from now on gradually builds up throughout the spring; and what a day it was to start.

After a comparatively barmy hour before the start of the competition the heavens opened and violent rain sprayed the course for most of the morning, gradually easing off for the afternoon starters who had to contend with heavy showers. Needless to say from the 104 members due to start only 60 entered competitive cards the

rest either walking in or taking the decision not to start. Proving his worth in the conditions was Alan Hyde, a late morning starter playing off seven, who with his accurate iron play returned a handicap equalling 36 points. On the second hole he failed to score but immediately bounced back to birdie the third and went on to return 18 points on the front nine. His back nine was interesting as he again did not score on one hole, this time on the 16th, but immediately sprang back with a birdie and then went on to record another 18 points on the back. Bill Eke(5), who played through the worst of the weather, took second spot. After struggling 14 points on the front nine his second nine was a joy to behold. Shaking the rain off, he pared in from the ninth to record 21 points. Two other players equalled Eke’s score of 35. They were Ralph Charles(16) and Joe Jackson(16) with Steve Jennings(5) and Richard Haines(6) taking fifth and sixth places on 34 points. Cassie Cunningham and Louisa Storey last year’s finalist in the Essex Ladies County Golfing Association's Hunter Cup started their 2017 campaign with a 6&5 win over Harwich and Dovercourts’s Sylvia Oliver and Abbey Henshall despite having to give them sixteen shots! The inform Annie Johnston(14) score 29 points to win the ladies 14 hole competition earlier in the week. In a strong field of 56 players, her score was just the one shot better than 28 handicapper Hayley Joel who was second on her own with 28 points. There were four ladies all returning 27 points, Philippa Macaulay(20), Philippa Deman(9), Bee Pertwee(18) and Ann Salmon(31).

How Should I Work My Core? The Truth!! S

it ups, leg raises, oblique curls ... I see many people excessively doing these in the gym, day in, day out. When asked why, the answer is generally to work on my core. Are they effective core exercises? In my opinion the answer no. I think there are much better ways of improving and strengthening your core without these exercises. I do not use sit ups AT ALL for any of my clients right now, i believe they are harsh on the neck and cervical spine and i believe, unless your deep abdominal wall is very strong they cause the abdominal wall to distend. SO,WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE CORE? I have mentioned before about the use of the swiss ball for strengthening the core, its an amazing bit of kit and builds stability and strength in the core like nothing else. The exercises are also way more demanding than a typical crunch therefore providing more fat loss and fitness. Specifically for golf, the swiss ball not only strengthens the core but has a huge amount of functional carryover for golfers and their swing. Balance, stability and the body coming together to provide big movements carries directly over to the golf swing. SOME EXERCISES TO TRY ... 1. Swiss ball Balance Work - level 1 would involve sitting on the ball with good posture and lifting 1 leg off the floor by about 1-2”, holding for 15 secs then swapping legs and repeating a number of times. Level 2 involves balancing on all 4’s on the ball (youtube - balance on all 4’s on swiss ball), the levels progress but for most level 1 and 2 are enough for the time being!

2. Prone Jacknife - Hands are placed on the floor, legs are placed on the ball and slowly bring the knees to the chest to then extend back out repeat 12 reps x 3 sets.

When It Comes To Loft Try To Be A Little More Dynamic…

I

hit my driver high, so the guy in the shop said I should change to a lower loft but I still hit the ball too high! If this has happened to you then unfortunately you have probably fallen victim to a classic sales pitch. Odds are you changed the wrong loft, here’s why ... Golf clubs essentially have three lofts: STATIC LOFT DYNAMIC LOFT SPIN LOFT Spin loft we will leave to another time but let me define the other two: STATIC: Static or Stated Loft is the loft on the golf club as it sits in your bag. Wether it's an adjustable head or a fixed head the loft should be pretty close to what is written on it – but due to manufacturing tolerances this could differ by up to 1.5˚. DYNAMIC: This is one of the key ingredients that contribute to the height of the shot. Dynamic Loft is the actual loft on the golf club as it strikes the golf ball. This can be very different to the Static Loft as this loft is determined by the Golfers swing and how the shafts reacts during the swing. In reality a golfer could easily see a difference of eight to nine degrees in their

Dynamic Loft due to swing and different golf shafts. So, if you changed from a 10.5˚ head to a 9.5˚ in order to lower your ball flight you can now see how little the one degree difference in Static Loft actually makes ... basically you may have changed the wrong loft. Both of the images below are from the same golfer (me), on the same day, with the same driver, same loft but with different swings. As you can see my ‘Club Attack’ changes hugely and in turn changes my Dynamic Loft. Between these two shots there was roughly seven degrees of difference in the launch angle and around thirty feet in height. With a higher ball flight the ‘Angle Of Descent’ or the angle the ball comes out the sky will become steeper leading to give less roll – giving a shorter drive all round. Another thing to consider here is the ‘Ease Of Use Factor’ when it comes to loft. In a nutshell the lower the loft the more opportunity of increased side spin so for many Golfers the quest for a stronger ball flight leads to a bigger miss. My moral here is simple, before you choose your driver you need to understand how you deliver the golf club and how your swing effects the loft on the club – only then can you choose the correct loft, and don’t let your ego get in the way ... a 12˚ driver doesn’t make you a lesser golfer!

Clacton Welcomes Braintree

C

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Seniors Captain John Kemp welcomed Braintree Golf Club’s Seniors Vice Captain Mike Saffill and his team to the Clacton Club for the first friendly match of 2017, which is the Club’s 125th anniversary. On the most perfect day for golf, the Clacton team consisting of Captain John Kemp, John Stuck, Bob Seggie, John Wacker, Tony Burnside, Doug Nichols, Derek Woodrow, Roger

Looker, Bill Highstead, Brian Langmead, Ray Fage, Bill Clarke, Laurie Farrugia, Peter Cross, Malcolm Pitcher and Terry Musslewhite. Following lunch of a classic steak and kidney pie, the captains announced that Clacton were the winners by 5 1/2 matches to 2 1/2 matches with the Braintree Vice Captain stating that he is looking forward to welcoming Clacton to Braintree on the 31st May 2017.

Good Evans! It’s an Oval Ball on the Tee

N

ewton Green’s new captain Gareth Evans hit his first drive 209 yards down the fairway – but not with a rugby ball. The former Sudbury Rugby Club winger – who played in the club’s National Division Three glory days more than 25 years ago – posed with a rugby ball on the tee before hitting his drive-in tee shot. He elected not to strike the oval ball, but hit a conventional ball down the middle. This was unlike his wife Rebecca, who went out of bounds when carrying out a similar task a few days earlier when she became Newton’s women’s captain. It is the first time in the 110 year history of the club a married couple has served in the same year as captains. Since relinquishing his main business interests two years ago, Gareth has reduced his handicap from 14 to seven. Retiring captain, Lee Prentice putted out on the 18th green before handing over to his successor. - 26 -

Clacton AGM Drive In M

embers attended the 11th AGM of Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club on Friday 17th March. The chairman, Bert Foster welcomed those present and also paid tribute to those who have passed away during the last 12 months. Members were informed that the club had had another very successful year, which was as a result of teamwork throughout all areas of the golf club. Various improvements to the course were carried out throughout the year, and it was reported that the club as a whole was one of the most successful in the region. On the recommendation of the board of directors, Robert Gillespie was elected an honorary life member for his long service and contribution to the club. Looking ahead, members were informed that this year marked the club’s 125th anniversary, celebratory events are well in hand with a wide variety of golf competitions and entertainment provided for the week 3rd – 9th July 2017. The chairman informed the members that the board of directors had agreed that Jeff Sinnott who had been elected as captain for 2017, but unfortunately passed away earlier in this year, that he would still be recognised as captain for the forthcoming 12 months with the new vice-captain Alfie Smith standing in for him when necessary. A record number of members came to witness Kath Sinnott drive in on behalf of her late Husband Jeff. Kath managed an excellent drive of 126 yards using a driver, into the wind. The winner who guessed the distance was Heather Bradfield. Speaking after the event, Kath said ‘I was

delighted with the turnout and thank all those who attended. I felt a little nervous, but I was pleased. I managed to connect the ball.’ This weekend as per tradition the men play the Moss Oldman Cup every year – this is a competition between the incoming captain and outgoing captain who each pick teams. Kevin Hill represented for the incoming captain and won the competition with 5½ and Nick Smith for the outgoing captain with 2½. Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s junior section played in the O’Boyle Shield, Joshua Bethell won the competition with a nett score of 4. In 2nd was Thomas Pirie with 2 points on countback, and in 3rd was Jacob Lazaro with 2 points on countback. With summer coming, the Juniors are looking for any other boys and girls who might like to play golf and join them on Saturday mornings at 9am. Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s ladies section played in their Coronation Foursomes, Di Kedge and Chris Crossfield won the competition with 37 points, in 2nd was Hoon Locke and Faye Trigg with 36 points, and in 3rd was Kath Sinnott and Lorna Forder with 31 points. Also, huge congratulations to Pat Gilbert who got a hole in one on the day on at the 2nd hole using her driver.

The winning team with PGA in Essex Captain Chris Cutchie.

M

arch has been a busy month for the Essex PGA travelling first to Gog Magog where we enjoyed typical early March weather. Sam Willis finished third in the Professional event, losing by one shot to James Webber and Jason Levermore who shared the spoils in first place.

Both players shot a very impressive six under par. The team prize was won with an impressive 91 points by the Channels Golf Club team with Professional Jason Levermore and amateurs Neil Hutchinson, Simon Larner and Mark Emmerson.

Report from Toot Hill Pro-Am

Wanstead Professional Event

T

oot Hill was bathed in Sunshine on 15th March and the event was extremely well supported with a full field and even more hoping for a late call up. The course was beautifully presented and most unusually all winning teams finished with the same number of points so the placings were decided on countback. The Professional places went to Mark Bishop and Mark Talbott sharing third place on two under par, leaving Mike Leitch and Jason Levermore in first place one shot ahead on three under par. In the team event and after many countbacks, Roger Gray’s team from Thorndon Park were third, Mike Leitch and the Hobbs Cross team came second and the winners were the team from Thorpe Hall, led by professional Mark Talbott with Shayne Smoothy, John Bath and sponsor Geoff Davies from Curran IT.

M

ick Hersant (20) won the Playgolf Colchester Pro-Am qualifying event. Using his low ball-flight game, he beat the highwinds, which made the going difficult for most. The Pro-Am competition saw a good-sized field turn out to compete in great course conditions. The tricky greens, mixed with blustery wind made scoring tricky, as reflected in the final CSS of 71 (three over the SSS of 68). Hersant carded four pars as part of his nett 70 to win the competition by three shots. He now goes on to represent the club at a later Pro-Am event. Three players needed countback to separate them after the trio carded nett 73’s. Trevor Hollingsworth (19) with four pars took the runner up spot from Steve Loran (10), who carded seven pars. Trevor Barnett (13) carded seven pars, five on his back nine and four straight to finish was fourth on countback, missing out on the prizes. Winner of the Playgolf Colchester Pro-Am event, Mick Hersant.

Winners of the final round of this year's competition and consolidating their 2nd place overall were Chris Graham (18) and Adam Rutter (11) with an exceptional 42 points given the weather conditions. Does Your Club Want More Members in 2017? Stop the Leaky Bucket!! S

pring is a time of year we all look forward to - longer warmer days, budding trees, daffodils, lambs, nesting birds and more golf at last! For over half of all golf clubs however, Spring means membership renewals! Increasingly, clubs are becoming more aware of the need to proactively recruit more members and drive sales which is great. However, how many clubs really commit the same time and thought to try and retain their existing members? Nationally, the average club membership is 460. Over the last 2 years the average number of new members per club is 84 and the average number of members leaving is 76. How does your club compare? Are you losing more than you are attracting? Even if you’re not, I bet there is more you could do to retain a higher percentage of members.

Whilst actively recruiting new members will always be necessary for most golf clubs, the pressure on this area could be reduced if more

were retained each year. Here are some ideas to consider in regards to member retention: n n n n n n n n n n n n n

Identify your likely leavers prior to renewals Review the renewals process – don’t just send out letters and hope! Regular member communication Member engagement and playing habits Explore historical trends Exit surveys – is there a common reason people are leaving? Club member surveys – fully understand your customers Customer satisfaction – what do you do well? What could be improved? Customer service Member benefits package and promotion – can you add value to membership? Membership Flexibility – appeal to all walks of life Competitor analysis – how do you compare against others in your local area? Ageing forecast & understanding your ageing member golfing/social requirements

You may think that all this seems a lot of work! However, in Essex, membership fees are often around £1000 (not including secondary spend) so each member is therefore extremely valuable to your business. With this in mind, I’d urge you not to ignore the importance of retention. For further support or more advice around member retention, or any other issue at your club, please feel free to contact me and I’ll be only too pleased to help. Enjoy your golfing Spring!

Inspiring Performance The Mind Zone workshops make an area of the golf game – The Mind Zone – that most people realise is very important, useable, realistic and performance improving on the golf course. Why not host a Mind Zone session in YOUR club? • Would you like to fill your clubhouse for an educational and fun evening full of tips and techniques to improve your golf, without even swinging a club? • Would you like a social evening for the membership and their guests? • Would you like to raise funds for your golf club or The Captain’s Charity? • Would you like to have even more successful golfers playing at YOUR club? If you can answer ‘YES’ to these questions, then The Mind Zone is for you!

Contact us direct to discuss how we can help you achieve all of the above. For further details about how you can benefit from a Mind Zone session, contact us NOW. 07876 444439 gary@themind-zone.com www.themind-zone.com

Do You Suffer From Concentration Lapses? H

ow many times have you heard commentators, when a golfer is leading a competition, say, ‘All they have to do is stay in the present moment’ or ‘Just keep concentrating’? Yet, how hard is that to do when you have been out on the course for close to four hours (or more) especially in the heat of the sun? Ask many golfers and they will tell you that it’s ‘natural’ to lose concentration when they are tired, towards the end of the round. So just how do you keep concentrating for that length of time? Well the good news is, you don’t need to! When you think about it, most of the time when you are on the course is actually ‘nongolf ’, between shots you are walking up the

fairway (preferably) and actually don’t need a high level of concentration. When you are ready to address and hit the ball, THAT is the time that you need maximum focus (or concentration) so why waste it? Relax, enjoy yourself (isn’t that why we actually play golf anyway?) and develop a process that enables you to fulfil your potential? For further details of how The Mind Zone can benefit your game, contact us today. www.themind-zone.com

The All Winners field is made up from the previous year’s competition winners. Chitraj Limbu (16) took third place on countback from Cord Plasse (10) after both carded nett 71. Limbu scored well again with an above-average six pars with Plasse unlucky to miss out with 11 pars. The Also-Ran Shield was held before the AllWinners cup and saw Dean Rainbird (15) card four pars and a pair of back nine birdies to win on countback from Sam Durrant (14). Durrant carded six pars and two birdies seeing off Dave Evans (21) who took third on countback from Lee Whitten (15) after both carded 33 points. Also-Ran Winner Dean Rainbird.

The Valley then staged a comeback taking the next 5 matches and a 6 – 4 lead but The Warren grabbed the last three to win overall by 7 – 6 and retain the Pete McKay Trophy. Congratulations to The The Warren Team Capt Jason Derham Gary Beck CVGC Capt and Warren on their victory and to Roger Cook CVGC President. - 36 -

G

olf is a unique game where the varying course and weather conditions have a huge influence on the shot selection and execution. We as golfers have to adjust accordingly which in itself is a skill which we learn through practice and experience. After a pretty good winter but with wetter ground conditions we will have to adjust shortly to the firmer often unpredictable Summer bounces. For many of us these conditions call for the lower chip and run shot which yields a greater chance of confidence and success for the recreational golfer. It is this judgement which if we have an understanding can really assist with reducing our

CLUB

overall scores. The table below is a very rough guide which I hope will help you understand the typical landing and roll out percentages with the most popular chipping clubs. I have added my own thoughts on a scenario when to use the various clubs to provide a practical example. Some players I coach prefer to use one specific club for their “finesse” short game shots where we alter the trajectory which is a completely different area but another option. Guide lines for landing and roll out for the “finesse” or chip shot. If you are a player who plays all “finesse” shots with a Sandwedge we can discuss at a later date.

So next time you are working on your “finesse” or chipping focus on the landing area not the flag! You will be amazed at how your thoughts are removed from the technical areas of the shot with the goal primarily directed towards the distance control. During her year as Captain, Stoke's Lady Players helped raised £3500, through social events, raffles and donations, for Betty’s charity. On Thursday 2 March 2017, Betty presented a cheque for £3500 to Emily Timmins, the Children's Society’s Regional Fundraising Manager.

U

fford Park’s Golf Club Captains, Barry Heaney and Dianne Clarke, were very proud to handover a donation to the East Anglian Children’s Hospice this week. The donation total was £3,500 and was raised over 52 weeks with the help of the golf club members through raffles, sweepstakes, collection pots and a very well-attended Captains Charity Day on 22nd May 2016. Every year the Captains nominate a charity to raise money for over their time in charge, and this year both current Captains opted for the local children’s charity, EACH. Hannah Walker of EACH said: “EACH relies on voluntary donations to fund services for children, young people and their families living with life-threatening conditions. That’s why we are very grateful to Ufford Park for this muchneeded support.” www.each.org.uk

David Hall Trophy

CAMBRIDGESHIRE v ESSEX Saffron Walden Golf Club – Sunday 5th March

This Annual friendly match for the David Hall Trophy was this year hosted by Saffron Walden Golf Club. The day started with the news that County Captain and team anchor, Jay Beisser, had to withdraw with an ankle injury, spending the day anchored to a golf buggy instead! This allowed Jamie Richards from Abridge to step into the side as an 11th hour replacement. The morning 4somes started with gathering clouds which turned into a cold, wet and windy morning, with our opening pair of Brandon Meads and Jamie Richards showing battling spirit in salvaging a half from being dormie 2 down. The next 3 games all produce 5&4 wins for Essex with the final point going to the talented youngsters from Cambridge, leaving the morning foursomes 3 ½ to 1 ½ in favour of Essex after some inspired scoring in atrocious conditions by both sides. Fortunately the weather abated for the afternoon singles and with wins for Brandon Meads, Taylor Carter, Will Percival, Ali Plumb and Lukas Warren, Essex ran out winners of the singles by 5 ½ to 4 ½. The overall match score 9 points to 6 in favour of Essex. Special mention to Saffron Walden for the condition of the course especially the greens which for the time of year were truly superb, also for their exceptional hospitality. The after match formalities were graced by David Hall’s widow Marian and her family in the longstanding tradition of this fixture and we look forward to welcoming them in the return fixture in Essex next year.

ESSEX UNDER 18s v THE RAYLEIGH CLUB The Rayleigh Club, Hullbridge – Sunday 12 March 2017 On a cloudy day at Hullbridge a combined team of Essex under 18s and under 16s kicked off the 2017 season with a friendly contest against The Rayleigh Club’s Thornton Cup aspirants. At lunch after the seven morning nine hole foursomes matches there was little between the two teams the points being shared 3½ - 3½ with four of the matches won by 1 up. The afternoon’s lead singles match paired Michael Gilbert with Jay Beisser, two of the county’s best players and was an evenly contested affair with never more than one hole separating the two players until the 18th hole. As the afternoon progressed the Essex lads pressed home an advantage and once the final putt had been holed the singles scored 10½ – 3½ in favour of the County Match of the day was undoubtedly between James Butler and veteran Ray Weidner at least 50 years his senior. It was not until the 17th hole when James holed an unlikely downhill putt from off the green that much to his relief he finally took the lead. Callum Newton continued his record from last season and finished the day with 100% success as did Ben Humphrey and Harvey Payne for Essex and Steve Weidner for The Rayleigh Club, so well done to those guys. Our grateful thanks go to Jamie Saitch and Dave Topley for their organisation and making the course available as well as The Rayleigh Club staff for keeping the players fed and watered. A most enjoyable contest played in just the right spirit which we look forward to continuing in 2018. Stephen Golding Under 18 Manager

Saturday 18th March saw the first fixture of 2017 for Essex Colts. The annual friendly match against Romford Golf Club – teams of 12 with both sides playing prospective players for the forthcoming season. Changes to the Colts set up as advised last year. Age range 18 to 25, with no player outside of that bracket. It was good to see several new faces. One player had to withdraw at 6am on the morning through illness. Congratulations to the Colts Captain – Brandon Meads, who successfully found a replacement in the short time allowed, and thanks to Jack Brown (Chelmsford) who was contacted at 6.40 and was on the tee at 7.20!! Romford Golf Club, as always, the perfect hosts. The course was in good condition, and although cold and windy there was no rain. The games were all played in a great spirit of camaraderie. The morning foursomes went very much in the Colts’ favour. The first match was halved and they then won the following five. 5½ to ½. Afternoon singles was an entirely new ball game. Romford started strongly. Again the first match was halved, but the second - a decisive win of 6/5 for Tony Aimes of Romford. Games three and four were both halved with game five another win for Romford. Of the remaining seven matches the Colts won five, with two more 6/5 wins, this time from Ben Horton and George Leversuch. Singles result 7 to 5. Making the final result for the day Colts 12½ Romford 5½. The twelve man Colts team were as follow:- Brandon Meads Capt. that the bright colours take nothing away from the balls’ performance technologies, but adds more fun and enjoyment to the game,” said Nigel Freemantle, Managing Director of Brand Fusion, the company that distributes Volvik balls in the UK. Other Volvik balls available in the UK will be the extremely soft S3 aimed at advanced golfer in Pink, Orange and White; the Vibe for golfers seeking soft feel and easy control in Yellow, Pink and White; and the Crystal ball that offers mid-handicap players longer distance and excellent visibility in Sherbert, Green, Ruby Red,Yellow and Pink.

olvik, the brand leader in multi-coloured performance golf balls, is making five of its topselling balls available in the UK market this Spring. Two-time Masters champion Watson, who signed as a Volvik brand ambassador at the start of the year, selects his next Tour ball from specially designed Pink, Green or White versions of the S4 ball. The extremely bright and stylish Volvik Vivid 3-piece ball provides longer distance for golfers with slower swing speeds and those looking for a softer feel and more consistent flight. It comes in seven different colour options of Red, Orange, Pink, Green, Lime, Blue and White. “Bubba is among more than 75 professionals using Volvik balls on Tours worldwide and consumers will see

ust a few months after the successful introduction of its first Downhill Control trolley – the S1 DHC – Motocaddy, the UK’s top-selling trolley brand, is adding a second model, this time to its popular compactfolding M-Series range. The new M1 PRO DHC incorporates the same standout features as the M1 PRO, including the threepoint folding system that has been developed to enable the trolley to fold over 40% smaller than standard models. But it can also maintain a constant speed while moving down a gradient – thanks to a special single motor that offers downhill braking, coupled with an electronic parking brake. The trolley’s power output is adjusted automatically to control the rate of descent without the golfer having to make any changes to the pre-hill speed setting, while the simple to use electronic parking brake will hold its position on the steepest of slopes thanks to an innovative solenoid braking system. “As well as the obvious advantage of greater control on undulating golf courses, the downhill control function is very easy to use and the S1 version has been extremely well received by UK golfers,” said Sales Director Neil Parker. Additional features on the M1 PRO DHC include an integrated Accessory Station; Adjustable Distance Control (up to 50 yards); speed and battery indicators; handle height adjustment; compatibility with the EASILOCK™ bag-to-trolley connection system; and a quick-access Device Cradle, designed to hold a range of GPS units that can also be powered from a patented USB charging port.

Shot Scope Releases iOS and Android Apps for Mobile Performance Tracking

L

eading golf performance tracking brand Shot Scope has announced that both iOS and Android versions of the Shot Scope app are now available to download, providing detailed post-round statistics on the go. The new apps will allow users to upload data from their Shot Scope wristband immediately after play directly to their mobile device via Bluetooth. Providing instant access to over 100 Tour-level statistics, a shot-by-shot overview and other unparalleled insights, golfers will be able to analyse their performance on both mobile and tablet after every round. The free apps, available from the Apple and Google Play app stores, complement the existing desktop app to give golfers their statistics in the palm of their hands. Both apps break the game down into sections, including club distances, tee shots, approaches, short game and putting, helping golfers identify both their strengths and weaknesses. Shot Scope is the first and only golf performance tracking system that collects data automatically, without disrupting play due to the need to tag or sync with a phone. Instead, the golfer wears a wristband which senses every shot and the club that was used by communicating with tags in grips. The introduction of the app brings the statistics even closer to the golfer, allowing for flexible, accessible and on-demand access to all of their data. Fully conforming to the Rules of Golf, Shot Scope can be used in competitive play and is already used on both the European and Ladies European Tours. Manufactured entirely in the UK, Shot Scope’s smart, wearable technology is more intuitive and comprehensive than any other current market offering, with the patented system enabling players to track their progress based on more than just their score. With the overriding goal of improving the way in which both amateur and professional golfers collect and analyse statistics from their game, Shot Scope is the first fully automated performance tracking system for golf.

Also a good-sized field took to the fairways in the Playgolf Seniors Spring Cup medal competition with some good scores returned. The Jubilee Cup

Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

W

e are now in the throes of our first full month of The Jubilee Cup – as I write late in March 2017, it looks to be a busy last couple of weekends of play with only 9 of the required 23 matched

played. Even so far there have been some heavy scores that could be key to the future positioning (hole difference versus game points), with the likes of Benton Hall, Gosfield Lakes, Manor of Groves, Stoke by Nayland, Colchester and Three Rivers Golf Clubs. All of these clubs, plus Canons Brook, are therefore leading their Leagues with Divisions A & C currently without scores. Remembering a Fellow Student T he 2017 Will Turner Memorial Golf Day took place at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa this week. Lee Westwood Golf School student, Will Turner, tragically lost his life after a car accident in March 2015. In his memory, an annual golf day was created to remember Will and his love of golf. The day, organised by the Lee Westwood Golf School year 2 students, included 44 past and present pupils. With the sun shining and everyone in high spirits, the event was played on the Gainsborough course, using the Greensomes format. Will’s parents, Julie and Martin Turner were there to support the players and, alongside students Dominic Burgess and Nick Homewood, presented the prizes. Julie Turner said ‘Will would have enjoyed the day so much and we are so pleased to see many of his friends here keeping his memory alive. It means such a lot to us’.

Will Turner.

‘Although it was emotional at times it was wonderful to see so many students come together to remember Will.’ Debbie Hynard, Lee Westwood Golf School. The winning pair with a team gross of 70, nett 68 were Callum Pipe and Abbie Symmonds (pictured); Ronan Homer & Bill Noblett took second prize with Samee Allie & Ben Bushnell in third.

Captain’s Day at Fox Hills, Surrey

C

aptain’s Day had finally arrived – after months of detailed preparation and weeks of anxious build up, the Jäger lads turned up in force, buzzing to experience one of the best courses the United Kingdom has to offer. Everyone was on time for once, however the breakfast wasn’t! El Capitain, John Langrish, sporting a naughty fresh new trim for the event, gave a brief speech, before the lads had to sprint down to the first tee! For the first time in Jäger history, we had rain ... and it wasn’t drizzle either. This caused a few problems for the low handicappers! Overall, there were some surprising scores, no one hitting their handicap – but this didn’t stop the oldest man in golf – Papa Siabi (21) winning with 32 points, followed closely by Darryl with 31, who also took home the NP2! Iyad was thrilled to see his Longest Drive win and collected his box of balls and sweets with pure happiness! Notable mentions, Dan Pow with the 24-36 prize and the Spot the ball and foot winning the 80 year old putting kit. Funny of the day, Jimbo off the first tee hitting the ball 2 feet – then parring the hole.

The Winner – Papa Siabi. - 57 -

BBC Extends Masters Tournament Partnership decisive Saturday and Sunday rounds. Radio 5 live and Radio 5 live sports extra will also feature live commentary of all four days from Augusta National Golf Club. Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, says: “We’re extremely proud of our partnership with the Masters Tournament, and this new deal highlights our longstanding commitment to bringing world-class golf to the widest possible audience on free-to-air TV. In addition, our radio and digital offerings will bring audiences closer to the action than ever before. The Masters remains one of the standout events on the sporting calendar, bringing together the world’s best players in a truly unique setting.” BBC Golf Correspondent, Iain Carter, told GBN, “It is always a thrill to commentate on the Masters for BBC Radio. We know the audience’s high regard for the tournament which always generates so much interest in the sporting world and I’m delighted the BBC’s long association with the Augusta National Golf Club is continuing.”

T

he BBC has announced an extension of its broadcast deal with the Masters Tournament, extending a relationship that now celebrates 50 years since the BBC’s first broadcast of the Tournament in 1967. The new multi-year deal includes extensive TV highlights of the opening two rounds of the Tournament as well as live TV coverage of the

SkyCaddie Welcomes Proposed Rules Changes

S

kyCaddie has issued a statement following this week’s announcement by the R&A and USGA that major changes are being proposed to the Rules Of Golf for 2019 onwards. One of the proposed changes will allow Distance Measuring Devices such as SkyCaddies to be used in all play, except where prohibited by a Local Rule. This effectively reverses the current situation, which states that DMDs can only be used in competition under a Local Rule. Jacqui Surman, Senior Vice-President International Sales & Marketing for SkyGolf, said: “As the original pioneers of the golf GPS market, SkyCaddie welcomed the 2006 announcement that the Rules Of Golf were to change to allow the use of DMDs under Local Rule. “Many in the game believe that GPS devices in particular help to speed up play, and SkyCaddie unequivocally supports the R&A and USGA’s call for golfers to be ready to play their shot at all times.

“In summary we wholeheartedly welcome this week’s news, and congratulate the R&A and USGA for adapting their thinking for the demands of the modern game so comprehensively – not only as regards DMDs of course, but also across the whole Rules Of Golf. We look forward to the finalisation of these proposals in 2018.”

Billy Wins the Chamois Cup

A

E

ighteen pairs of ladies took part in the 42nd annual playing of this needle match when Anne Hemmings Ladies Captains team took on her secretary’s team on March 28th. This light hearted but fiercely fought encounter marks the start of the summer season of evening golf and the lovely weather certainly rose to the occasion. At the post match supper, the traditional Shield was presented by Roz Clements to Hon. Sec., Sue Grieves, who claimed a narrow victory 5-4.

lmost 50 golfers turned out for the Chamois Cup on this bright spring morning of the white medal tees on the Lakes course. With the course still playing all of its 6700 yds, Some golfers found the transformation from the shorter winter tees a challenge. Graeme Sinfield (25) returned a respectable 35 points, four golfers came in with 37 points coming inside the CSS of 73, Danny Owen (11), Adam Rutter (12), Andy Lee (14) however claiming 3rd prize on countback was 8 handicapper Charlie Powell, second place again losing out on count back was Andy Gilbert (18) with 39 points, however winning the spoils was 6 handicapper Billy Coe with a better back 9 holes. Malcolm Pook won balls for a birdie 2 on the par 3 4th hole.

FUN Golf Gets The Families Playing

F

UN Golf for all the family has got more than 120 people enjoying and playing the game at an Essex centre – and their numbers are set to grow in 2017. FUN Golf is a programme offered by the Golf Kingdom and supported by England Golf to get more people playing, particularly families. When it was launched last year almost 40 families took the opportunity to join a threeweek course between June and October, taken by a PGA professional, and with the emphasis on fun. They used colourful clubs and tennisstyle balls and the activities included hitting giant targets on a large inflatable. Ten new players have already gone on to play more golf by either taking an improvers’ course, a junior programme or by becoming a range user. Now, FUN Golf is being re-launched for 2017, together with a Golf Kingdom Family membership, which will be available from June, to encourage new golfers to keep on having fun and playing the game. “We’ve had great initial response to FUN Golf and we’re looking forward to attracting even more families in 2017 and creating a lifelong habit,” said Scott Cranfield of the Golf Kingdom. “We’ve listened to feedback from families about the importance of being flexible when offering times and dates for courses and we’ll be taking this into account for this year’s programme. “Golf is the perfect game for families who want to have fun together and our new membership will give them unlimited use of the many activities at Golf Kingdom. As well as FUN Golf there’s the Moby Adventure Golf, Foot Golf, FUN Golf, the short game area, range and golf course.” England Golf has supported Golf Kingdom with this project as well as helping them understand their customers and potential

customers. This information can be used to shape publicity for the campaign on social media and other promotional materials. This is part of England Golf ’s wider work to attract more families into the game and Family Golf Month in July will highlight activities across the country which can be enjoyed by all. Claire Hodgson, England Golf Head of Participation, said: “All the generations can enjoy golf together and it doesn’t matter how young or old they are – or how well they play. “We’re working with clubs across the country to spread this message and Family Golf Month will be a great opportunity to get more people playing. Watch out for news of lots of Get into golf activities to appeal to families who are looking for a great way to spend time together.” Last year, England Golf and PING launched the PING Family Fourball which proved hugely successful. Entries for this year’s event open on 1 April and more information is available on England Golf Website. England Golf also has a Family Guidance booklet available to clubs, which is packed with advice and ideas for events. www.englandgolf.org
