Charity Golf Day EDITOR Paul Haddow
Our Golf Day is once again at the beautiful Thorndon Park Golf Club. Thorndon is the No 1 golf course in Essex and is presently undergoing a major face-lift with some bunkers being repositioned and redone, and thinning of the trees on the course to provide more light and air.

By May the results of all the work will have created an even nicer course. Over the past 30 years, by organising an Annual Charity Golf Day, The Rotary Club of Brentwood (registered charity no 1061479) has raised over £100,000 in aid of many charities. This year the main charity we are supporting is the charity SNAP. SNAP (Special Needs And Parents) is a registered charity that helps Essex families with children and young people who have any special need or disability. Come and join us on Friday, May 25th. This is your chance to enjoy playing at Thorndon Park Golf Club in Teams of 4.

COLCHESTER
Y
ou will be reading this months Essex Golfer around the time of the ‘Masters’ so it will either be in full flow or it’s done and dusted and we’ve hopefully seen an exciting contest with some big names up there!
There is no doubt that the season has started slow however for us we had a record January and our second best ever February!! Was always going to be tough in March with snow, rain and more rain but with all that we’ve done ok. Now we are well and truely up and running. Both the men’s and ladies clothing look excellent with Underarmour for the men’s taking centre stage along with Ping, Callaway, Footjoy, Puma, Adidas, Oakley, Stromberg trousers and Lyle & Scott for the first time. Ladies is anchored by Rohnisch as well as Adidas, Puma, Callaway, Underarmour and Footjoy. In the shoe section for ladies we have 29 different ones to choose from (I would not think anyone else in Essex has that many) and the men’s is full with Skechers leading the way. The pictures show our range of ladies shoes and the extensive men’s Sketchers range. Finally, below is a offer that will not suit everybody but on the Srixon Z Star yellow you save £100!! and the Ladies ball you save £50!! If you spend over £100 on this offer we will deliver them free anywhere in Essex. Enjoy your golf as hopefully the weather has turned for the better.

dam Harper and Tom Rothery rose to the top in Colchester Golf Club Foursomes Cup. With sighs of relief that a competition could take place and a weather eye on the sky Harper and Rothery knuckled down and put together a solid card from their eight handicaps. Turning just three over par they set themselves up for the back nine. This was the second time in recent months that this pairing had enjoyed success following their victory in the fun competition, three Clubs and a putter over the Christmas holidays. Turning just three over par they set themselves up for the back nine where they started bogey, double bogey, bogey. Not the best of starts but they got it back together quickly and courtesy of a birdie on the par three 13th pared the last six holes to return a gross 77 which equated to a nett 69 and a victory. Ernest Van Vredenburch (9) and Andrew Smith (8) returned a very tidy card showing nothing more than bogeys, giving them a nett of 69.5 to taking second place. They played two halves of gross 39s to keep just ahead of Calum McKenzie (12) and Dafydd Stephens (16) who took third spot with a nett 70.
Paul James Jackson (10) and Paul Smith (9) carded 70.5 nett to claim fourth place whilst Dave Blackmore and Stuart Watson, both playing off eleven, returned 71 nett to take fifth spot. In the year’s first Saturday Walk-on-Stableford a small field saw Richard Hayes (12) take first place with 36 points. Stephen Dack also a twelve handicapper handed in a card with 35 points to snatch second place from Stephen Sheffield (34) who was placed third. -8-

SHARPEN UP YOUR PUTTING DISTANCE CONTROL
W
ith the weather changing, courses conditions drying out and with many golfers coming out of hibernation. One of the key things you may be rusty with is distance control with your putting in the 20 to 40 foot range. If you judge the distance incorrectly here you will be more likely to 3 putt. Try a few of the below exercises to sharpen up this key skill. Just 10 minutes of practice, which can even be before you play and are warming up, can make a big difference. n Develop the rhythm of your stroke One of the keys to good distance control is the rhythm of the stroke. Try saying 1-2 to aid in getting the pendulum swing of the putter.
n Putt to some set distances - The key
distances you need to work on are 20-40 feet. If you pace out 20,30 and 40 feet then putt to a tee or between 2 alignment sticks with 5 balls you will quickly sharpen your distance control on these essential distances. n Putt to some random distances - with 5 balls now just putt to some random distances and use the fringe of the green as a target.Your aim to roll each ball a similar distance and get within a grip length of each other.

Magic Year For Matthew O
ne of our youngest members Matthew Whitaker enjoyed a successful season in 2017 and is already looking forward to more success this year. Matthew has been practicing and playing at Nazeing Golf Club for a few years, and now he is getting the rewards. Matty has qualified for several events around Europe for this year, so we are organizing a competition (Date TBC) to hopefully raise some funds, which will allow Matty and his caddy dad, Martin to pursue his ambition of becoming a Touring Professional. From February May 2017, Matty competed in the British Junior Golf Tour super 6 series where he won with three 1st place finishes, two 2nd, one 3rd and then won the grand final on the 21st May, winning a set of Golphin golf clubs.
Wee Wonders - 46 regional qualifiers and the top 3 qualify, in the regional finals the top 2 qualify for St Andrews. For Matty’s age group 64 entered and 25 got to St Andrews. He finished six shots ahead of the rest of the field which opened a pathway to the European championships and World championships at Pinehurst for 2018. He has been in the paper three times, appeared on Sky Sports and featured in a Q&A.

The Pace 1
H
2
aving spent probably too much time watching Tigers return to the tournament arena recently, what really struck me as impressive was not his fabulous golf swing, amazing club head speed, brilliant pitching and chipping skills or his mental toughness. What really struck me was the consistent pace that his putts go into the hole, this is not an easy skill to acquire, mind you none of the other great skills mentioned are either! But it is not possible to read greens consistently if you are unable to hit the ball at a similar pace each time. Here is a very simple practice drill to help you gain the same positive pace that Tiger hits his putts.
Place a long iron in front of the hole as I have done in Picture 1, the narrower part of the shat is in front of the hole. If you now practice you’re putting, from any distance if the pace is good, the ball will pop over the shaft into the hole. If it is to slow it will not climb the shaft and stay short, to fast it will pop over the shaft and also the hole. After a while you will be surprised how good your pace control will become and give yourself a better chance of reading the putt correctly.

COACH OR MENTOR T
here’s a lot said about the words “coach” and “mentor” and to be honest this is a subject that’s difficult to fit into a small article so it’s something I’ll be touching on again later in the year.To me a golf coach is someone that influences you and helps all aspects of your golf. It is someone that will help advise on outside areas to help such as diet or fitness etc even if that means bringing in experts in these areas with more understanding to be part of the team. They will help build tournament schedules and also watch at some events. One of my big thoughts has always been and what I call the “Alex Ferguson method” would you have ever known him to coach the footballers during the week and then not watch them play on Saturdays play their game. In my opinion as coaches I don’t think we watch enough of our players and it’s something that’s important to me as it helps you to watch them under pressure and see how they deal with certain situations. It’s also worked for partnerships such as Rory McIlroy and Michael Bannon and Jason Day up until last year had his coach Colin Swatton caddy for him to. That particular player coach relationship with Jason Day leads nicely into the next area of “mentor”. Jason Day was introduced to Colin Swatton as a junior and needed guidance outside of golf more than anything from what I’ve read and understood. He really helped sort stuff out behind the scenes to start with and became a mentor really as well as a coach. For me the mentor can be the coach but this person could be someone else within the game such as a senior figure at your club or someone you know who has more experience and if you’re lucky like Rory McIlroy it can be a tour player like he had with players such as Darren Clarke. Whoever it is it’s someone you’ll look up to and take as much advice as you can. Personally as a junior I didn’t have a golf coach and didn’t have lessons until my early twenties
where I sort the advice of Clive Tucker who coached me and he definitely was a coach and a mentor for me and a very good one at that. I would also say I had 3 big influences (mentors) in my teens and early twenties and they were Tony Parcel who I worked for at Braintree golf club and where I did my PGA apprenticeship and he guided my early professional career. Then there was Craig Lawrence who at the time had golf lessons with Tony Parcel. Craig helped me more than he realised and looked out for me at tournaments and was someone that I could ask advice. Then there was my dad. He will always be my biggest mentor and I wish I took his advice more. The only problem for my dad is he didn’t play golf or know much about it so as a family we had to guided. We were also lucky before I turned pro to have the support from Essex county and especially Eddie Sadler who was the county President.
I hope anyone who reads this can relate to a part to what I’ve said to help them. All in all I think there’s a lot of good coaches in Essex and a lot of people with good experience in the game so don’t be frightened to seek their advice and have that coach or mentor to help your game.

Funding for National Associations to Attract Women and Girls into Golf
T
he R&A is continuing its commitment to increase participation in golf among women and girls by providing funding to support the appointment of new development managers in Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Working with its affiliates around the world to enhance golf ’s appeal, the investment forms part of the governing body’s drive to encourage more women, girls and families to play golf more regularly across the globe and to go on to become members of golf clubs. An initial three-year funding package of £75,000 per nation has been agreed between The R&A, Golf Australia, England Golf, the Golfing Union of Ireland / the Irish Ladies’ Golf Union, Scottish Golf and Wales Golf for the recruitment and appointment of experienced sports development staff. The appointees will all work in partnership
with golf ’s various stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions and inspiring campaigns to boost participation at a time when more women are seeking an active lifestyle for both themselves and their families. Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development at The R&A, said, “Women and girls continue to be an under-represented group throughout golf across the world and more work needs to be done to attract more of them into the sport at a time when we need to boost participation levels. “We believe that there is a real opportunity, working with our affiliates, to develop inclusive and inspiring participation initiatives which show that golf is a fun and enjoyable leisure activity that can provide many social and health benefits for women and families.” A recent research report commissioned by The R&A demonstrates that a significant growth opportunity exists for golf if it can attract more women, girls and families into playing the sport more often. www.randa.org

Sport Relief Charity Golf Day 2018
O
n Saturday the 10th of March, once the snow had left and the subsequent rain stopped, the golfers of Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club had their first qualifying medal of the year despite two holes being on temporary greens. The Gainsborough course was quite wet after the heavy rain from the night before but there were some good scores posted from those who played
T
on the day. Playing from the green tees, the winner of division one was Steve Childs (10) with a net score of 65. He beat Rob Benson (11) by 1 shot and Steve Wood (6) by 3 shots. The winner of division two, Gary Thompson (12) had the best score of the day with a net 63, beating Byron Long (13) by 1 and Dan Finch (13) by 3. The third division was won by Nick Forsyth (17 and pictured) with a net score of 65. He narrowly beat Luke Bennett (17) and Liam Worsdell (21) by a shot. He said afterwards that the solid start he had with a run of pars and two birdies on the back 9 set him up for a good round. All of these players can look forward to a cut in the playing handicap for the coming season.
he sixth annual Comic/Sports Relief Essex Golf day was held last month at West Essex Golf Club in March, and again arranged by Phil Redhead – member of The Notleys, and Chairman of the Jubilee Cup. Players from inside BT, where Phil works, and local external supporters from The Notleys GC, Playgolf Colchester, and excellently supported by the “STAGS” www.stagsgolf.org.uk competed in pretty damp conditions, all for the good of raising money for Sport Relief 2018. Despite a carry-bag rule only on the course, and therefore losing a third of the field, a valiant 23 players competed on a course where the greens were still excellent, and well presented by David at West Essex and his team. Sadly, Phil did not take the honours, losing on count-back of 37 points to Cai James from Playgolf Colchester Phil is shown here (on the left) handing the prestigious “Wooden Spatula” to Alan Pearman (right) from Playgolf Colchester – and we will be back again in March next year. generally wearing funny trousers, as this time contributing to Comic Relief 2019. On the day, and also following some outside donations from Richard Ross at Brampton Golf Club (Cambs) and Simon Cheney (formerly of Saffron Walden), a total of £560 was raised at this Essex charity golf game. Furthermore, Phil made a good contribution on the day towards his overall contribution of 191,215 steps in BT’s own Billion Step Challenge.
Pheasant Pluckers
T
hroughout the summer season of 2017 the Pheasant Pluckers who play at Clacton-onSea Golf Club, under the Captaincy of Richard Borstel, raised £1500.00 for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Richard chose this charity as his wife, Mavis, helps to train dogs - Mavis has Ziggy with her (the Golden Labrador) together with two other Labradors which are also under training with other trainers - such a good cause and eventually after a long training period these dogs will move on to help people who are visually impaired. Alan Corbyn will be Captain of the Pheasant Pluckers for 2018 and will be raising funds for COHOC.
Phil would like to thank all those who supported on the day and generously donated, even when not playing, and much thanks to the generosity of spirit from West Essex Golf Club who rewarded us all with some bangers and mash!

Colchester News I
t was another week badly interrupted by the weather at Colchester Golf Club. However the first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition was held before the snow with Jim Wilkinson and Iain Cruickshank the pair representing Colchester. Drawn away at Harwich and Dovercourt GC they were paired up against Nick Rate and John Oakley and some match it turned out to be. It was the very last hole before the match was decided with Wilkinson and Cruickshank coming out winners one hole up. The snow arrived just after the two Colchester GC Societies had completed their winter awaydays. The larger of the two groups, being run by Bill Hart, were at Felixstowe Golf Club where under the late winter sun they enjoyed an excellent day with the golf reflecting the weather. Steve Sharman topped the day with 40 points from his 13 handicap with Andy Totham (14) and Andrew Patrick (8) two points behind on 38. Andy Franklin (8) was next in with 36 points to take
fourth spot. Then came the pack, with Chris Doyle, John Redden, Steve Moore, Mike Withers, John Dornan and Bill Hart all crowding the rostrum with 34 points before retiring for a well deserved fish and chip lunch. The Braiswick Society were at Purdis, where the ongoing course works never failed to surprise the group. After an excellent breakfast it was Mike Gordon who won the day with a solid 35 points from his twelve handicap. Joe Clarke (16) returned the same score but lost out on the countback. Countback had to be exercised for third place between Paul Harrison (16), Roger Robertson (7) and guest Duncan Smith (16) with Harrison having the better back nine and squeezing Robertson and Smith out.

GOLF TIPS FOR AROUND THE COURSE As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easy-to-understand. Bentley Golf Club Completes Phase One of its Planned Development
T
he first phase of the planned development of Bentley Golf Club has been completed. This phase took seven months which included expanding the overall footprint of the building, extending the Patio area, and finishing with a complete internal refurbishment to the Clubhouse and the Pro Shop. Mark Gallop Club Secretary said the logistics of coordinating this type of Project was very demanding but we knew what the end goal was going to be. Building work was carried out in planned segments so as not to disrupt or be intrusive to Club Members and Visitors. Mark went on to say that there has been extremely positive feedback, Members are now able to enjoy the new surroundings and facilities.
Whilst all this work was being carried out in the Clubhouse, work and money was still being invested on the actual Golf Course, with particular attention being paid to the Water Irrigation system, additional drainage on some of the Fairways, extensive glade clearance and the planting of some additional trees. Jim Mahoney Club Chairman said we are very proud of our achievements to date. We will continue to reinvest in the Club to ensure that the Members and new Members continue to enjoy both the Clubhouse and Course. Anyone interested in finding out more or joining Bentley Golf Club can contact Mark Gallop on 01277 373179 or email secretary@bentleygolfclub.com

MEET BOB
B
ob is a fairly typical golf club member, he’s played for longer than he cares to remember and even though he readily admits that time has not been kind to him from a physical perspective he simply can’t work out why he does not hit the ball as far as he used to. So, with that in mind he looks to ‘new’ technology to answer his prayers. His old driver is around 8 years old so things must have moved on since then and on paper this seems to offer a perfect solution. Problem is ... it’s probably not the perfect solution. Since 2004 the powers that be (The R&A & The USGA) have adopted the CT (Characteristic Time) Portable Pendulum Test.
Basically this means a pendulum is dropped against the head (it’s a bit more complicated than that) and has to rebound within a certain timeframe ... 239 to 257 microseconds. In fact 239 microseconds is the rule but a manufacturing tolerance of 18 microseconds is permitted, hence 257 being the legal limit. What’s important here is that drivers are not tested by golfers as to how far they go, it’s a mechanical test, which in all fairness has little to do with a golf ball. For me the key part here is the date ... 2004. Any driver manufactured after this date has to abide by these rules, irrespective of make, model or price. That’s right, price included. So, here’s an interesting fact ... from 1996 to 2016 the average driving distance on The PGA Tour increased by 35 yards, the average club golfer? 11 yards, yep that’s correct 11yards ... just a little shorter than a double decker bus. But, what’s Bob’s problem? Well, there could be many but it could be as simple as his is own driver simply does not suit him anymore. I can assure you it won’t be that the driver face has gone soft or the shaft has worn out so what does he need? He needs to understand what the problem is, is it technique, the club, the ball? Simply ‘buying in’ to marketing may not solve the problem, sad thing is it’s an expensive mistake to make. There’s a chap that visits the Hylands range, in the last 6 months he has bought three of the latest drivers, probably spent around £1200 and unfortunately he hits the ball exactly the same as he did with his original driver but he truly believes it’s the technology that will help him out when in reality it’s the fitting. It’s the match between his swing type and driver that will help him, not a one size fits all solution that he is currently wading his way through. Be smart when it comes to equipment, don’t make an expensive mistake.

The 239 Microseconds That Won’t Change Your World
John Storms To Win J
ohn Blackmore made no mistake in wrapping up the C.H.A.P.S. Stableford at Colchester Golf Club first Sunday competition of the year. Following a Following two weeks where the snow and rain have made the course unplayable, the course was damp under and above the foot, but the competition was allowed to take place. With buggies and trolleys banned to protect the course, all competitors had to carry, but it was not a burden that hampered three handicapper Blackmore. His intent was clear from the start Birdying the first, he then went on to drop two shots, which were quickly nullified by birdies at the seventh and ninth allowing him to turn one under gross. Dropping just one shot on the back nine, his round of 70 gross gave him 39 stableford points which in the conditions belied his three handicap a player who gives more than he gets. Two points further back on 37 points were Kevin Brett (6), Harry Hills (5) and Dean Hughes (6), all of them putting in solid performances on a wet and uncompromising day. Both Hills and
Hughes recorded two birdies in their rounds. In total 87 members part in the competition; the low numbers reflecting the bad weather start to the season. Entry fees were donated to C.H.A.P.S., a Colchester charity that aims to raise awareness and support the development of new health services directly targeted at men’s needs.

Girls Golf Rocks is Back in Essex! G
irls Golf Rocks has inspired over 220 girls to start playing in Essex – and their numbers are set to grow even more this year. The campaign to attract more girl golfers has been running in Essex since 2015 and has now spread to 20 other counties. It's back this year with eight free taster sessions, followed by coaching courses and Girls Golf Rocks on Tour – a series of playing days to encourage new girl golfers to get out on the course and make new friends. The fun playing days are open to all girl golfers across Essex, whether or not they’ve been involved with Girls Golf Rocks, and they are designed to encourage beginners and improvers to play more often.
The free tasters will take place at: n Elsenham Golf & Leisure - Saturday 14 April from 13:00-14:00 and Tuesday 17 April from 18:00-18:45 n Colne Valley Golf Club - Tuesday 17 April from 16:30-18:00 n Frinton on Sea Golf Club - Tuesday 17 April from 17:00-18:00 n Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa Wednesday 19 April from 16:30-17:30 and Saturday 21 April from 11:00-12:00 n Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre Saturday 21 April from 10:30-12:00 n The Rayleigh Club - Sunday 22 April from 11:00-12:30

Each club will also offer follow-on coaching courses with PGA professionals. To book visit www.girlsgolfrocks.org Girls Golf Rocks is run by England Golf and the Golf Foundation, with U.S Kids providing 7-irons for the girls to use. It was first piloted in Essex to show girls that golf is a fun and friendly sport and now runs in 21 counties. The newcomers at both the taster sessions and on Tour are supported by girl Ambassadors, whose encouragement for the newcomers has helped to make the project such a success. Izzy Lush, from the Essex girls’ squad, is starting her fourth year as an Ambassador and said: “It’s been so beneficial to me as a student, it looks amazing on a CV as it’s given me so many amazing opportunities. It’s helped me grow and understand what I want to do when I get older. I love helping the girls and getting stuck in, you get so much out of it, like it makes you feel great about what you do and I’m proud of
myself and the girls alongside me.” Abigail March, 14, is a member at Colne Valley and she said: “I enjoy golf because it is challenging and you get to meet a lot of new people. I think other girls should play because it is a fun sport that you can make a lot of friends through it. I really enjoy being a Girls Golf Rocks ambassador because I enjoy helping girls get into golf.”

Report from the 3rd Royal Event threatening the lead. However, Steve Hambling from Braintree Golf Club quietly put together an impressive round of 66 to take the title by 4 shots from Scade and his Little Channels colleague Jason Levermore. The team with Kieran James held on the the ProAm title with a solid second day score of 83 points to win by 4 points from the Braintree team lead by the individual winner Steve Hambling.
T
he PGA in Essex made its annual visit to the Kent coast for the 3rd playing of the ‘Royal Event’ over the links at Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St. Georges. The first round at Cinque Ports was played in a strong wind and heavy rain which made scoring very difficult and keeping dry and warm even more difficult. Despite the conditions the lead after the first round was a very respectable 3 over par 74 by Phil Wesley from Langdon Hills Golf Club by one shot from James Jankowski playing on an invitation. The team score after the first round was an amazing 84 points by the team with Kieran James, also playing on an invitation. The second day at Royal St. Georges Golf Club, scene of the Open Championship in 2020, was played in much more pleasant conditions with no rain and more spring like temperatures. Scoring by the Professionals was much better and Phil Wesley needed a good round to hold on to his lead. As the day progressed, it was clear that several Professional were making a move, not least James Scade from Little Channels who had started the first day with an even dozen on the very first hole and still shot 83. An amazing score of 65 moved James rapidly up the leaderboard and - 40 -

the 2018 Algarve Pro-Am t October – 1st November 2018 29th
Following thet success of our Spanish event last 2 year we have2 decided to return to the sunshine of the Mediterranean visiting the fabulous Amendoiera resort on the Portuguese Algarve.
A
lthough the Toot Hill course was covered in snow three days prior to the event, a heavy thaw and hard work from the greens staff meant that the Toot Hill Pro-Am went ahead with a course in wonderful condition considering all that went before. As usual for the event, there was a full field of Professionals and their amateur teams vying for the Prize money and team prizes. The first group on the course consisted of PGA Cup player Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club and his team of Toot Hill members. Coles demonstrated why he is leading the County Order of Merit by returning an excellent score of 4 under par 66 which held the lead until the end of the event. Several Professionals came close, including Chris Goddard from Romford Golf Club and Lee Laughlin from the Scott Cranfield School who both shot a creditable 2 under par 68. However no one managed to overtake Coles and he took the winners cheque toT increase his lead at the top of the Order of Merit with a four events remaining.
T

T
he good general course conditions and soft greens rewarded accurate play and the good greens conditions saw the ball rolling well for the Playgolf Colchester Medal competition. Mick Seaman (9) returned to form with a bang shooting the lowest gross 73 (nett 64) to win division one. Seaman pencilled in a steady 11 pars and recovered well from five bogies with a brace of birdies on the par five second and par four finishing hole. Jack Blackman (8) carded a gross 75 (nett 67) to take the runner up spot with a
steady nine pars and a trio of par four birdies. Jonathan Tait (10) carded a gross 78 (nett 68) to take third place with 11 pars and a handy birdie on the par three third hole. Eaton’s card highlights saw him card four pars and a par four birdie on the eighth hole. Jack Potter (20) took third place, beating stalwart contender Trevor Hollingsworth (18) on countback with both carding nett 68. GOLF ETIQUETTE Some people may be asking, “Why would I need a book about correct conduct? I know how to behave myself.” Although integrity and fairness are an excellent basis, good manners alone are not enough in golf. A certain amount of specific knowledge is essential, especially in the light of the dangers involved in sport. Furthermore, golf also involves social conventions that are not based directly on accepted behaviour patterns. The etiquette is just as important as the rules of play and it ensures that all players can enjoy their game as much as possible.
This book does not claim to cover every single issue but it does contain everything you need to know in order to be welcomed at virtually every course in the world. However, please bear in mind that the etiquette may very slightly from club to club. Therefore find out about the Local Rules in advance, follow all the instructions and heed the information on the notice boards. You will then be a welcome guest and playing partner on any course – irrespective of your ability level.

The Jubilee Cup
Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
First Blood to The Notleys A
t time of writing this update (23/03), only one match had been played in any of the Leagues, and potentially with some impact in matches as a result of the returning snow over 17-18th March, it will be down to the remaining three weekends before the Round One deadline of 8th April. For those 23 matches, you are most welcome to be using our NEW online scorecard facility for submitting results to the Committee – to access, and for help in completing, please go to www.jubileecup.com/scorex/ The first 2018 match was Division E’s Canons Brook versus The Notleys, and resulted in an Away victory by Jubilee Captain Rick Vince’s Notley team with 6.5 to Canons Brook’s 2.5 game points. Our website holds the full details of each 4BBB and Singles games, and our first matches details is shown at the URL below www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/cannot5.htm and detailed as the image below too. What we do not capture electronically is the spirit of the game, and how the matches were played, but Rick summed this up in the submitted scoresheet: “Great bunch of guys. Made us feel very welcome, match was played in a very good spirit”, and this continued after the match with some drinks in the bar and a bit to eat courtesy of the Canon’s Brook’s host – the Notleys also wished to thanks the club for allowing courtesy practice arounds ahead of the match, which was very much appreciated. By way of a live example also, the scores on the website populate our Order of Merit standings for both singles and pairs players - clearly only Canons Brook and Notleys members on there currently, and let’s be honest, I am only including this this month as I am at the top of the OoM ... and we all know that is not going to last very long! Match Report
ESSEX COUNTY TEAM v CAMBRIDGESHIRE Stoke by Nayland Golf Club – Sunday 25th March 2018
Andy May with Marian Hall and family.
A
fter a cold off season, the Beast from the East abated somewhat to allow the 2018 opening match between Essex county side and Cambridgeshire to take place at Stoke by Nayland Golf and spa. Although a friendly, this match is played for the David Hall Trophy, and is a strong link binding the two counties bringing fierce competition. Essex selected a very strong side which became apparent as the morning foursomes progressed. At one point looking as though a 6 nil whitewash was on the cards. However some spirited golf by Cambridgeshire turned this around somewhat and the lunchtime saw Essex leading by 4 ½ points to 1 ½ a score which flattered the home side. The afternoon singles however were a different matter with Essex coming out of the block showing no mercy. With only 1 ½ points out of the 12 available going to the away side, Essex romped to a total win of 15 points to 3. - 48 -

Towel Caddie – New to the Golf Market
Lynx® Golf Launches New Prowler® Irons
T
L
ynx Golf, the global golf equipment company with headquarters in Surrey, Great Britain, unveiled its first ‘performance players range’ at the recent 2018 PGA Merchandise Show, with its new Prowler® irons receiving widespread acclaim. The Lynx Prowler® Forged CB promises the better golfer an outstanding combination of a penetrating trajectory, feel and forgiveness and combines a cavity back with beautiful design and forging from 1020 carbon steel. The new forged irons come in a satin chrome or gun metal finish, with Lamkin Crossline grips. Sitting alongside the Prowler® Forged CB club, comes the Lynx Prowler® VT muscle-back iron – combining a hollow-headed design with a variable thickness forged face to deliver a killer combination of incredible ball-speed, higher flight and playability. Both new tour-inspired irons have been developed in-house at Lynx’s Weybridge design HQ. Said Lynx’s UK and European sales manager, Murray Tonry: “The challenge when creating the Prowler® Forged CB iron was to utilise all the benefits of modern materials, technology and manufacturing processes while retaining a soft feel and also delivering a level of forgiveness and ball workability that the lower-handicap and scratch player requires. “As a result, it’s a more classically-styled cavity back iron, with a thinner top line and narrower sole that will definitely please good golfers at address without penalising distance or forgiveness. “With the Prowler® VT, we wanted to offer an ultramodern muscle back iron for golfers who love to hit the ball long, high and with superb levels of control. It’s packed full of technology hidden inside the head utilising variable thickness which creates ‘friendly’ spin on off centre hits, which in turn improves accuracy.” www.lynxgolf.co.uk
his handy mini golf towel is attached to a retractable reel with a built-in carabiner clip and ball marker. It removes the need to walk to your golf bag to clean your golf ball or golf clubs. Not just a more convenient golf accessory – it speeds up play so golfers move round the course faster. Towel Caddie solves these problems: n When on the green you go to make a putt and there is debris on the golf ball or putter head: you walk back to your golf bag to clean it then return to make your putt. n You are in a bunker and notice your club face is not clean or you need to play a repeat bunker shot and there is sand on the club face. What do you do? – step out of the bunker leaving more footprints and go to your golf bag to clean it.You then walk back across the bunker leaving more footprints and take your stance once more. n How many times do golfers stand on the putting green trying to find a ball marker by searching endlessly in their pocket to find it. Towel Caddie can be easily clipped to any belt loop using the built-in carabiner clip. The towel is always to hand on a retractable reel to clean your golf ball and clubs at any time. The micro fibre towel has the advantage over a soft fabric towel as the fibres are more resilient when removing unwanted debris from the ball or golf club and absorb more moisture. It has been sized so that it fits neatly into the hand for easy cleaning.
Retractable reels come in a choice of 9 colours and its metal flat ball marker has a 25mm printed resin dome held onto the retractable reel by a magnet. Strong enough to keep in place it is also easy to remove when required to mark the golf ball. Towel Caddie comes in various options which allow for customisation of the reel, towel and ball marker (it can be purchased with or without the ball marker). Towel Caddie was developed by Golf Tee Store, an established and leading provider of golf tees and accessories based near London. www.towelcaddie.co.uk

Using Past Success to Create Champions A
t last there are signs of spring and of course, The Masters Tournament is imminent! Shrouded in history with a tremendous pedigree of past winners, I’m sure it is on every golfers bucket list to take a trip up Magnolia Lane and step onto that course. But what would go through your mind, as you stood on that tee? Driver in hand, knowing that this year could be your year? I’m sure we have all dreamed that dream, and the possibility of actually playing Augusta National other than for a few, hugely talented individuals is all but a pipe dream … but we have all had to deal with standing on the first tee, perhaps at The Club Championship, Captain’s Day at your Society or the Saturday Morning swindle, knowing that we could get our name on the board!
So whatever level you are at with your golf, whatever handicap (or not) you play off, here are some great examples of dealing with that first tee shot or sinking that putt to win.
Cast your mind back only a few weeks, to The Valspar Golf Tournament, won by Paul Casey by one stroke from Patrick Reed and a resurgent Tiger Woods. Casey, finishing earlier than the chasing pack, shot a 6 under final round, but the talking point afterwards was his final putt, to save par. Knowing he had a chance of posting a final round 65, Casey was asked how he felt, making that final putt. His answer was … he thought back to his previous PGA Tour win, 9 years previous, and visualised a similar putt he had to make then. Another success story recently has been the win by Rory McIlroy at The Arnold Palmer Invitational, held at Bay Hill. This was McIlroy’s first win since September 2016, on the day that Arnold Palmer passed away. For those that watched the live coverage, Rory certainly held a Masterclass in putting and chipping on the final 9 holes. Belief and momentum definitely helped him here.. all areas that are covered on the Mind Zone Workshops. Much has been made of the resurgence of Ian Poulter in recent weeks, now he has gone back to using his ‘Medinah Putter’! Poulter obviously had some great memories that he could draw on from the victorious Ryder Cup in 2012, and standing over the ball, felt confident with his magic wand in hand. We recently attended an excellent seminar hosted by Lee Porter Golf Solutions - 54 -
www.leeportergolf.com and Robert Coles, Essex’s own Touring Pro and part of the winning 2017 PGA Cup team, undertook a Q & A. When asked about what golf ball was best, Robert’s answer was ‘the one that works, the one you feel confident hitting’. There are many brands of golf ball on the market, so go out and try them… what works for one golfer, may not work for another, the swing speed, impact angle, etc. all have a bearing on delivering the ball, eventually, into the hole. At the Mind Zone, we would say, use the ball that gives you most confidence and a neutral thought process, when you stand over it. How much better do we all play when we are feeling confident? If you create the right environment around you for playing golf to your maximum ability, and visualise what you WANT to achieve rather than not, then you will start to notice how many more fairways you find, how many more second shots find the target and how many putts drop. That is exactly what the touring Pro’s do! It works for them, and it can and does work for you. If you want to know more about our Mind Zone workshops simply contact us via the website www.themind-zone.com

The Tiger Prowls as the Big Freeze Bites D
espite the dismal weather across the UK for the start of 2017, golf was still front of mind for many golfers unable to hit the fairways, as Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour to excite fans with the prospect of a return to some of his finest form. There has been no shortage of ‘can he can’t he’ debates in clubhouses around the globe, with regards to his prospects of beating Jack Nicklaus’ major record, but even two months before the first major of the year, it seems attention on, arguably, the best golfer of our time, is as strong, if not stronger, than it has ever been. PGATour.com analytics showed a remarkable year on year increase of pages views by 23% for the month of February, with the Honda Classic specifically reaching 175,000 users in a single tournament day in the UK and Ireland alone, visits to the PGATour.com website leapt by an incredible 34%, as golfers accessed the PGATour scoring platforms 1.7 million times during the event*.
With the increased attention for the younger superstars, including eventual winner Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Open Champion Jordan Spieth, the outlook for 2018 couldn’t be stronger. Golf equipment providers and tour operators across Europe have been taking advantage of the audience reach from a digital advertising perspective, via Mediadrive, where Sales Director, Michael Smyth, commented: “We’re very pleased to be in a unique position in golf, whereby we’re able to offer our clients a premium advertising platform, which reaches such a huge number of golfers during these important pre-season periods, when golfers are considering their equipment choice for the season ahead, or book golf breaks to sunnier climates.” www.pgatour.com

sight we would forget this Winter is the snow and wet conditions but with Spring hopefully about to take hold we will be spending time playing putting all our winter work into good use ... won’t we! As a former Ladies European Tour player for over 20 years I believe I have the added advantage of looking back on particular areas which could have helped me during my career. Everyone spends approximately 80% of their practice time devoted to their full swing with the technological advancements this has been emphasised especially with indoor facilities such as launch monitors.
- 58 -
However, let’s not forget we actually need to “Learn to play the game” one area which I spend much time coaching and assisting my squads especially during the winter months is to let our Golfing Mind work for us. I would like to share a few points which you can take to the golf course which I believe will provide you with some instant learnings and change the way you reflect and think. We have all heard about the pre-shot routine, this will be for an evening get together or another article. However, how about the post shot routine? If we hit a shot we are not entirely happy with what do we do? I think we many know the answer. If we deal with the shot outcome with frustration and other associated thoughts and actions it is hardly surprising we carry these thoughts to the next shot and so on. This adds up to the one or two destructive holes during the round. So, next time why not try the following steps? It can’t hurt … n Firstly, look where your ball has finished, don’t turn away in disgust! With the new rules coming in 2019 we only have 3 minutes to search for it. n Rehearse your swing again using your one swing thought your Teaching Professional has been working on with you. Try using these short few seconds to relax and visualise the feel of the shot you were trying to play n Please place the club in the bag, which will signify the “end” of that shot. I see many golfers walking along swinging the club whilst pulling their trolley. I believe this is holding on to those bad memories n Set yourself a clear goal from wherever your ball has ended up n Commit fully to the shot in hand and enjoy the challenge of the shot in hand. This in itself is the art of acceptance but if we manage our expectations and play the shot accordingly I am sure this will help your golf. Our mind is a powerful tool so let’s use it to create those happy feelings and thoughts! As Hogan famously said “The most important shot in golf is the next one.”

How to Increase Female Members at Your Golf Club Golf clubhouse design specialist, David Hales, discusses the different ways golf clubs can increase their female membership rate. David founded David Hales Design Studio, an architectural and interior design studio specialising in clubhouse and leisure facility design, with his wife Diana over twenty years ago.
T
he 2016 England Golf Membership Questionnaire found that the average golf club has 460 members of which just 70 are women; figures which have hardly changed since 2014. With an average of just 15.2% of club members being women, read David’s top suggestions to increase female membership rates. Family Friendly The opportunity to increase female members of golf clubs may lie with the current members. 65% of females identified their husbands, partners, parents and other family members as the main reason for taking up golf according to a study by Kitching. Hosting frequent open days and taster sessions will increase the opportunity for potential new members to join the club. Events such as a family firework night, a children-friendly quiz night and a summer barbeque are all good ways to promote the club’s services and increase memberships.
clubs’ members are male, there are usually more photographs and honours boards celebrating their achievements. It may be welcoming for potential club members to see more female golf figures being promoted. Including more female photographs on the club’s website is also another way for potential members to get a good first ‘digital impression’ when researching your club.
Welcoming Environment Creating a welcoming environment, developing clubhouse facilities and catering for a range of different needs can improve membership growth. Golf clubhouse interiors can often be outdated and this could potentially deter new members who want to join a modern and contemporary club. David Hales Design Studio is renowned for renovating clubhouses. Rules One of the reasons why some female golfers are deterred from joining or even attending a club is the strict dress code many establishments enforce. Female Representation In 2017, the study by Kitching found it was found that females experience the golf setting as maledominated, and in some cases a sexist environment. Changing this view will encourage more female members, and this could be done by including more women in the governance and leadership of golf clubs. Additionally, as the majority of most
Clubhouse Facilities Improving golf clubhouse facilities is fast becoming the best was to attract new members to join. Private golf clubs in America expanded their fitness and spa areas by 22% from 2013 to 2015, according to the Club Spa and Fitness Association, and the primary reason for this was to increase the membership rate. Adding a Wellness Centre, Spa, Fitness and Leisure areas will increase the club’s potential. Female Golf Events There are a number of events which clubs could partake in to encourage new female members such as Women’s Golf Day, a global initiative launched in 2016 which can take part at any golf-related location where current players or first timers can play and engage in golf. This event is happening on 5th June 2018 and is a great way to attract new members to your club

BASI LDON GOLF COU RSE
As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER
