OBITUARY t is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of INorman Head. Readers of Essex Golfer will know that is was Norman who started the magazine in 1996. Having been published for so long, the magazine has become an integral part of golf in Essex – something which Norman was very proud of. He loved golf. He played all his life, introducing the game to his sons and daughter; Glen, Jamie, Paul and Amanda. He and his wife Linda moved to Southern Spain a few years ago and he continued to enjoy playing golf in the sun. Norman was a fun-loving, caring and totally unselfish man who adored his family and did all he could for them. His children were his best friends and his grandchildren, who he loved so much, kept him young at heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We would like to think he tapped on ‘The Pearly Gates’ with a 7 iron before passing through! Love from all The Head Family.

s I write this there is still no sign of rain!! It's making it very difficult for all greenkeepers and it's important we give them our backing in such unusual circumstances. Well what a great open it turned out to be. Big names up there in the end, great come backs from players and as it turned out the hottest player at the moment goes on to win! Well done Francesco Molinari. Well this month sees the start of our sale. We need to move out our summer stock (always a sign that Autumn is on the way) and make room for the new ranges. As always we have plenty of offers across the board and also some individual deals that are one offs! It all starts on Saturday the 25th August and doors open at 9am. We are also offering an extra 10% off sale items to Essex Golfer readers. Finally the picture here is of Georgina Blackman our part time sales person. The cup she is holding is the English women’s amateur championship where she held off the challenge of 2 Curtis Cup players and previous winners. That result has lead to a call up for her to play in the home international in August in Ireland. We are all very proud and hope she has some spare time to work in the store!!

JAMIE’S VICTORY DAY amie Scott smashed his way to victory at Colchester Golf Club Victory Cup Qualifier. JBig-hitting ,but often wayward, Scott playing off six, returned a nett 65 to take win after countback from Andy Totham (14) and Clive Mason (10). With hard ground and drives running an extra 50 yards the course was there for the taking. Scott carded one over par gross on the front nine, with his back nine unblemished he returned a one over par round. Lowest gross of the day fell to Nathan Howe (1) with an impressive 67. Totham rued the first four holes of his round as he was six over par, an eagle at the par four fifth cleared his mind and solid hitting brought him home to equal Scott’s nett score. Mason had no such histrionics, with a level par front nine and a steady back nine his qualifying place was always secure. He and Totham earned two-shot cuts to their handicaps. - 12 -

NOTLEYS IN ONE wenty seven handicapper Rob Harwood a member at Notleys Golf Club had the shock T of his life, when he achieved his first ever hole in one. Competing in the Jubilee Jug, the round had already been a bit of a roller-coaster ride playing with Club Chairman Mo Cook, when he approached the 7th hole (par 3 of course). Watched by his playing partners and even father and son as spectators, Ray and Chris Hunt. Terry, coming down the 6th hole witness his ball rolling into the bottom of the cup after a single stroke, Rob can be seen here in the sunshine at Notleys on the 7th green.
Sadly this was not to see Rob head to competition glory, as thoughts turned to the inevitable outlay in the 19th hole and discussion about what just happened, but overall a great result given his 10th position in the Jubilee Jug competition. Further antics have also been seen in the club house, with none more happier than Trevor Norcott who had a really successful year last year and latterly receiving his competition trophies Trev is seen here flanked on the left by Club Captain Rick Vince and on the right by outgoing Captain Dene I’Anson.
As Club Captain, it is great to see so much fun being had out on the course at the Notleys Golf Club, the friendly course with a great future.

Be Flexible with Wedge Selection 1
n my set make up I carry three wedges a 48 degree 52 degree and a 56 degree as my most Ilofted wedge. Seen here in Picture 1. All three wedges are the same length, I set up to them all the same way and I swing them the same way. The primary difference is the trajectory the 48 degree will hit the ball the lowest and the 56 the highest. When playing on the course with my clients I often see them reach for the same wedge irrespective of the shot required, this becomes a little one dimensional. The shot required will dictate the wedge
3
required. Picture 2 shows a pin just over a bunker, the ball will need to fly high and stop quickly, for me this is the 56 degree. Picture 3 a longer pin and no real need for height or stop, I would select the 48 degree, Picture 3 somewhere in between the middle wedge will be ideal. Practice with all three start to get an understanding of trajectory and the roll when the ball hits the ground. But use the same technique with each for consistency. Have fun Gary

Parents and children could then share videos of their efforts with HSBC Sport – with the best one to win a unique prize from The Open! Playing with Tim and Brian, a group of boys and girls from Grange Golf Club showed off their skills to celebrate the creation of new HSBC Golf Roots projects involving 87 golf clubs in Scotland. These funding projects will support club PGA professionals to create outreach junior programmes in schools and the community to welcome more boys and girls to golf clubs and enjoy a sport which can offer them ‘Skills for Life’ benefits in a healthy environment. Tim Henman and Brian O’Driscoll also supported the Golf Foundation in the ‘R&A SwingZone’ in Carnoustie’s Spectator Village, as this nationally recognised charity worked with Scottish Golf and the PGA to make golf more accessible for all. ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH WINS THE DAY
Alan Hands, captain John Wheatley and Keith Oxborrow.
extremely good day was held on Monday the 2nd July to raise funds for the Stoke by A Nayland Senior’s Captain, John Wheatley, and his chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK. The competition, played on the Gainsborough course was a stableford team challenge with all 4 to score on par 5’s, 3 on par 4’s and 2 on par 3’s. The highlight of the day must be two hole in ones, both on the short 3rd hole, by Keith Oxborrow, his 1st, and Alan Hands, his 3rd.
This must surely be an extremely rare occurrence and a probably unique experience at SBN - well done to Keith and Alan. Congratulations to the winning team of Paul Sandfield / Ian Bickers / Keith Prichard & Peter Jay who scored a very creditable 133 points. The biggest winner of the day was Alzheimer’s Research who will have benefitted by £2400 from the days fun and games.

NORMAN PLUM WIN FOR BELFAIRS
(L to R) Luke Bennett and Ian Todd waiting by the 17th tee.
layed on Sunday the 29th of July at Stokeby-Nayland Golf Club, the quarter-final P Norman Plum match against Belfairs Golf Club, from Leigh-on-Sea, was a close call with Belfairs eventually winning 3.5 to 2.5. The conditions on match day were very difficult with
swirling winds gusting up to 48 mph and occasional showers. The 3 away matches were all won by Belfairs with Dean Brace and Steve Hewett losing on the 18th, Alan White and Bob Tokley were beaten 3 and 2, and Trevor Brace and Guy Holland losing 4 and 3. Home advantage at Belfairs which is a tight course eventually came through for their captain Ray Jones. At home, debutants Kevan Priestland and Jason Hoggarth put in a fine performance to win 5 and 4. Luke Bennett and Ian Todd won 3 and 1. The other match played by Rich Fryer and Nigel Howgego was drawn with the Belfairs pairing of Dave Bucke and Alex Tindall coming back from being 2 down with three to play. The match was played in great spirits and Belfairs are a great bunch. We wish them all the best in the next round against Chelmsford.

wo engineers who used to work for a world leading mobility scooter manufacturer came up T with an invention of a dual mode walk/ride vehicle. Initially their vision was for this to be a mobility scooter for people who, from one hand, would not use a two wheel electric bike/scooter as it is not stable, particularly when carrying bags etc., and from the other hand would not use a conventional seat-on mobility scooter which is conceived as a vehicle for old/disabled people. They believed that riding in a stand-up position on a very user friendly and safe means of transportation would be ideal for such people, while the option to switch to walking in order to get some exercise or in crowded areas would be an important and unique feature. It was only later when they have decided to target golf as the main application of their invention. They raised funds, applied for a patent and design registration in 15 countries, developed the Xtrider, built several prototypes and went through extensive field testing until finalizing the configuration. While starting to look for partners in golf countries they met David Bone at a show. David, a member of Upminster Golf Club for over 40 years, came up himself with the idea of a walk/ride golf trolley after injuring himself and having a major surgery to his heel. The parties have decided to collaborate and have the UK and in particular Essex as a pioneer in a global marketing campaign they are about to launch. At this stage the Xtrider is offered exclusively to golf clubs in Essex. For more information please visit www.xtrider.com or contact David Bone on 07956 874674 or email david@xtrider.com. - 21 -

MAKE A GOOD FINISH – FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT the 4th article in our chipping we article we are going to give Ionenseries last key idea. If you can make a good finish it will help you control the low point. You want the finish position to look athletic and like you have tossed a ball. What you usually see in players that have difficulty in making good contact is the opposite. Some key things to look for 1. Your weight is forward 2. Your sternum has turned through 3. You have kept the left arm shape (for a standard chip) Try this exercise: •
Hold your finish – This may sound simple but is often deceptively hard to do. Hit some shots and hold your finish and try to pay attention and be mindful to your finish to see if you are doing the above key points.
I hope these ideas in this chipping series have helped. Chipping is a key shot and many people really struggle with what should a simple stroke. But if you apply these few key ideas you can save yourself some shots very quickly. - 26 -

Why Club Fitting Fails The Club Golfer this may sound a bit strange coming Igolfsuppose from a guy who spends his life working with equipment. In fact after 30 years I’ve seen
pretty much every ‘new idea’ come and go and in some cases come back again! Think of the golf industry as a wheel, it just keeps turning and in a lot of cases goes full circle. So, why does club fitting fail the club golfer? It’s fairly simple really, for those who only fit what their company of choice gives them as demo product you are simply being fit into a product who’s parameters are only slightly larger than the ‘off the shelf ’ offering.Yes, there are multiple shaft offerings but, for example, many clubs are catastrophically restricted when it comes to lie angle and shaft length. A good example of this is that many iron heads are now so hard (to give the holy grail of distance) the lie angle cannot be adjusted - try to bend the head and you will probably end up with two pieces. In a situation like this you end up with a ‘good enough’ fit – not great really, if your custom made suit was ‘good enough’ it would probably not like good. Another good point here is that many ‘fitters’ do not have a workshop, any club building or adjustments are made by the company and simply shipped to the account. OK, nothing wrong with that but what happens if you need the lie angle tweaked a little or the weight altered a bit? If the fitter has no loft and lie machine the clubs go back to the company who, let’s face it, have never seen you hit a ball … and a weight change? No chance, many companies have a range of achievable weights so if it’s outside of that you are out of luck. Where’s the balance? For most fitting is a game of trial and error, this is where a fitter constantly
gives you an assortment of shafts for you to hit and hope that one does the job. A good fitter would know the shaft you needed and maybe give a couple of variations either side of that. Problem is with this for many golfers the ‘experience’ of a fitting is to hit every shaft on the market to tick it off the list ... after around 50 shots the golfer becomes tired and the quality of the swing deteriorates so the results become null and void. A little bit like going to the doctors and asking to take every pill on the market until you feel better - probably best the doctor points you in the right direction first. So, where can fitting fail? Many golfers are not being fully fitted, most are fit into a series of standard parameters that are believed to work for the average person. Their fitter may have limited knowledge of the swing and in many cases are poor golfers. Good fitting has many aspects, probably best to start with someone who knows what they are doing and not just singing off a company sales sheet.

THE
GOB
elcome to the August edition of The Essex Golfer and your latest Mind Zone article. W Following a winter that seemed would never end with courses closed or playing so long and golf balls plugging in the fairway ... we’ve gone all 1976! With little or no rain since mid-May courses are now playing short with balls runningout forever and some very ‘random’ bounces! Compare these two extremes ... and us golfers can always find an excuse for a poor game.Visiting different clubs throughout this year, here at The Mind Zone we’ve heard many stories about how to keep playing well and enjoying golf with the weather in 2018. As golfers, we have to accept the course conditions as part and parcel of the game (perhaps that’s what makes golf such a brilliant, yet frustrating, sport)? After your next round, whatever the outcome, have you considered talking only about your good shots? Now, that may be alien to some, as we love a ‘drama’ in the clubhouse, and who can resist telling everyone you were 4 shots under your handicap until you stuck two balls Out of Bounds on the 16th! But seriously, this is not good for building up good memories. Here at The Mind Zone, we want you to go one step further and after each round, actually write down your best three shots. These could be drives, fairway shots, bunker shots, chips or putts, it really doesn’t matter, but what is important is to document them. Writing down is the ‘doing’ part of thinking and actually engrains the detail in our memory bank. For those that tell us their round was so poor, they didn’t have three good shots, then think again … a six inch putt to finish a hole is a good shot! For those golfers that seriously want to improve
FILES
their game, create a GOB file! Now in this instance, GOB stands for ‘Glimpses Of Brilliance’… and is a fantastic way to create documented evidence, in your own words and handwriting, of your achievements (incidentally, this doesn’t just work for golf). If you’ve holed a 10 foot downhill putt before (and let’s be honest, who hasn’t), then what will your memories be like standing over the next 10 foot downhill putt? You have clear, fact-based, evidence that will increase your confidence. Adversely, if you’ve only ever remembered the 3 foot putts that you’ve missed, again, what memories does that evoke when you are standing over that next 3 footer! Let’s be clear here though, it doesn’t always guarantee that you will hole every putt, but the more confidence and fact-based evidence you have, the greater the possibility will become. Try it ... you have nothing to lose! Be kind to the way you talk to yourself, it can lead to all kinds of possibilities. For those that watched The Open, the 147th from Carnousitie, you can see these top pro’s drawing on previous evidence. Justin Rose, having to hole the putt on the 18th for Birdie just to make the cut. (Perhaps he was thinking back to the 17th hole at Medinah in 2012 when he holed out to win the hole in the Ryder Cup)? How superb was that Bunker Shot of Tiger Woods, when he was leading and had found the trap? What about Rory McIlroy’s monster eagle putt to give him a share of the lead on the final day? All great shots that they will have drawn on previous memories and used to create future memories. Finally, a big well done to Italy’s first Major Winner, Francesco Molinari for a superb round of golf. He stuck to his task, followed his process and playing with Woods, perhaps even drew on some memories from Medinah 2012, when he beat Woods in the singles? Next month, look out for our announcement of the Mind Zone Masterclass, date to be advised, but to avoid missing out, simply follow our social media pages or contact us direct and we’ll keep you informed directly.

STRAIGHT LEFT ARM
Sarah coaches at both Three Rivers Golf & Country Club & Stockbrook Manor Golf Club.
BANISH THE STRAIGHT LEFT ARM MYTH FOREVER Cooked soft feeling Spaghetti Arms.
ension is a destructive word in golf if we are looking to achieve a full flowing powerful T swing. We need to understand “We control the clubface, don’t let the club control us” This starts with the precise amount of pressure placed on the handle at address and during the swing which in effect radiates through our forearms to our shoulders. I like to use the analogy of “spaghetti” arms feeling like cooked spaghetti not straight from the packet! If we imagine our “soft cooked spaghetti” arms at address accompanied with a neutral grip we are in a position to maximize our power especially with the driver. A fault of many golfers is the display of “arched wrists” and high rigid arms during our set up position. This has a profound effect on the ability to release the club head at the ball more likely manifesting itself in pressurized situations. The straight left arm (right handed golfers) which we have all heard is supposed to be key … actually in my opinion this prevents the upper - 36 -
body from achieving a full shoulder turn and very often the ability to set the wrists during the backswing (first image). The ability to create the soft tension free combination of the arms and wrists acts as a lever which is an additional power source. When coaching players with shorter backswings or upper torso limitations I look at utilising the arms and wrists to assist their movement patterns.

Soft left arm (target arm) full shoulder turn.
A flexed left arm (right handed player) in my view is not necessarily a fault for a golfer, this essential characteristic is very often implemented due to player limitations. I personally find this trait very acceptable and playable as opposed to the bolt straight full of tension left arm. Next time you stand on the teeing ground think about “soft spaghetti” arms and reduce the wrist arch for a tension free swing, helping you to take control of the clubface and swing. Remember “we control the clubface, it does not control us” SBGolf think “soft not straight.” www.sarahbennettgolf.co.uk

He shot a gross score of 84 beating his age by 6 (SIX)! Earning him a two-shot cut in his group, Competitions committee have yet to see his card! John has been a member of Burnham on Crouch Golf Club for 48 years and has held the President’s position since 2008. Regularly playing three times a week John often devastates opponents on both the practice putting green and the course choosing to putt one handed. Playing partner in the group Del Hawkes reports, He may not out drive us anymore, but he can certainly beat us on the greens! I have yet to see john miss the first fairway! We are not really surprised he got 44 points, he is a hard man to beat with the putter”.

COMPETITION SEASON HAVE YOU FOUND YOURSELF PLAYING EVERYDAY FOR A WEEK AND FEEL GOLFED OUT? nfortunately our golf season in the U.K. is small and to make things worse for juniors U it’s actually split into two areas which are based around holidays, Easter and summer. Rightly so all the kids are looking to get their handicaps reduced now and by the end of the summer holidays they’ve done so much short game and putting they’d have a short game Seve would’ve been proud of and played in more competitions in six weeks then a tournament player would do in a year. Sometimes even playing 36 holes in a day and then playing the next few days on top of that! Well let’s stop a moment and think about a couple of things that you need to factor in 1. Is your child physically and mentally prepared to take on these events 2. Have they practice round, walked the course or played their very recent so they know the course 3. Have a plan in place with their coaches of structuring in some practice between events
These are only a few of hundreds of questions you could ask and all would be relevant as it can become silly season for golfers and I’ve personally seen some youngsters breakdown under the stress and strain of it all. My advice to you would be to have a chat with your golf coach and ask for their advice on competitions that would be good for them to play and come up with a plan that makes some competitions where they have a chance at winning, some more of a test and maybe one competition that can be their own “major.” Remember this isn’t a sprint. Over the years I’ve heard so many times people say this is a good competition and so is that and to be honest they don’t really know it’s just happened to be a nice day. To me you should play the competition that suits where your child is at physically and mentally. Make time to prepare properly with practice rounds and practice in between events. Don’t get sucked into the handicap race and try and make sure you all learnt something over the summer which will help you plan even now for next year. I still learn every year about different children and family situations that make planning hard but fun. Overall enjoy the summer as we’ll all be moaning about the weather and dark evenings soon and no competitions. Set yourself a goal and good luck in getting there.

he Society of Lady Captains 2nd Summer Meeting, hosted by Bentley Golf Club, saw 64 T members enjoying the lovely refurbished facilities in the clubhouse, the fabulous course, the delicious buffet style dinner and last but by no means least the superb desserts table. Taking to the fairways at 12 noon the ladies had another treat in store as they were right under the flight path of the aircraft (from the Chinnocks to the Red Arrows) en-route to London for the RAF centenary fly past. The course played beautifully with no fewer than 12 pairs scoring 40 points and more in the drawn 4BBB competition off full handicap. In addition to the competition scores one lady, Mary Buckley (Ilford) had something else to celebrate as she got a hole in one at the par 3 144 yd 8th hole and received a box of balls from the Lady President (Jan Collier). In 4th place with 43 points on count back were Jane Collier (Forrester Park) & Sandra Goff (Crondon Park), 3rd with 43 points ocb were Lyn Anderson (The Essex) &

In first place and winners of the Joyce Layland Cup with a massive score of 48 points were Jenny Hartnett (Crondon Park) and Margaret Woodward (Risebridge). Thanks to Bentley Golf Club for hosting the meeting, to all the staff involved on the day, to Liz Potter (Lady Captain Bentley) and her helpers. A great day both on and off the golf course! 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT UPMINSTER GOLF CLUB ur 90th Anniversary celebrations have come and O now gone but will be long remembered for the outstanding success they were. We played golf over a course modified to look something like it did back in the late 1920’s which produced a stand out round of 59 by Bradley Aldridge on Saturday. The Club was attended by over 250 people on Saturday afternoon and evening who were entertained by Jamie Williams and the Roots Collective in the afternoon followed by Ross Williams who put his DJ hat on thereafter. We were fed and Royally watered by our catering and bar staff which included a PIMMS tent and a Cocktail bar and to make it the full family experience our youngsters were entertained with crafts, face painting, piggy putting, duck hooking to name just a selection. Sunday was a little more sedate with golf in the

JUBILEE CUP SUCCESS FOR STOKE-BY-NAYLAND
H
aving won their league in the Jubilee Cup, Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club progressed into the knock out stage with a home draw against Stableford Abbotts Golf Club. Played on Sunday the 15th of July, a hot, sweltering day, both teams took to the match knowing a quarter final berth was at stake. A very tight affair was expected and although Stoke took a grip of the game early on this soon changed and it became apparent that this was going to be a close run thing. With both teams playing some lovely golf it was no surprise that come the end the match it was level at 4.5/4.5. There were wins for Rich
Fryer and Byron Long, Matched halved for Trev Warren and narrow defeats for team debutant Roger Toone and Kevan Priestland. In the pairs Andy Hately & Adrian Dent Halved there match, Keith Hodgson & Norman Davidson won 3&2 and Roger Gardiner & Steve Martin got the all-important half to take the match to a play off. Up stepped Byron Long to continue the match, and on the second play-off hole he secured victory for Stoke sinking his putt to put his team into the quarter finals. A great game played by both teams in a good spirit that leaves Stoke able to continue in their quest to retain the trophy the won last year. - 45 -

Summer Priorities ... HOW TO ACHIEVE BALANCE IN SEASON
olf requires practice ... and lots of it. The spring/summer months for golfers are G usually spent on the driving range, the putting green and having practice rounds and the gym usually suffers. No time for the gym, no time for stretching, therefore fitness, strength and flexibility is heavily effected, making the winter hard work! So how do you avoid loosing all flexibility, all strength and all fitness in the summer months? To keep flexibility, strength and fitness you must achieve consistency. My most used word with clients. Consistency is absolute key. Train 2 x per week over a year and achieve better results than the person training 6 days a week but sporadically. Consistency builds muscle, gains strength and makes training so much more rewarding.
My top tips for staying supple, strong and fit in the summer months for a golfer; 1 Stretch once per week and put this stretching session in your diary as an appointment. Routinely stretch just once per week to keep things ticking over, if its in your diary as an appointment you are more likely to do it. Once per week will maintain the flexibility you have gained in winter. Once winter comes you can up the anti and develop the flexibility further. 2 Get a gym programme written for you that will target everything in one hit ... an integrated programme not isolated ... basically instead of training “legs”, “chest and back” etc you opt for integrating all muscle groups into 1 programme (integrated) with Core exercises included. Some HIIT training to keep fitness and again put in your diary as an appointment when this will be done. With an integrated programme there is no pressure to train 3-4 x per week, you just have to do this programme and as many times as possible which will fit with a busy golfing schedule. Golf is a very time consuming sport and stretching and training can be very easily forgotten about in season and this is where injuries happen! So just think 2 hours per week must be dedicated to stretching and training, then when winter comes, golf practice time can reduce and stretching and training time can increase.

THE HERBERT BISHOP VASE Colne Valley Golf Club – Wednesday 27th June 2018 he Herbert Bishop Vase was presented by WH Bishop of Mersea Island Golf Club in 1939 to be competed for by T the Captains and Secretaries of the affiliated clubs and the members of the County Executive Committee. In recent years this has been expanded to allow other Club officials to play if the Captain or Secretary/Manager is not available. This year’s fixture was contested by a field of 40 teams, and Colne Valley hosted a magnificent day. The format was fourball betterball stableford with the 90% of handicap rule being applied. The weather was kind with bright sunshine throughout the day with occasional gusts making playing Julie Ruscoe & Michael Withers, Runners Up. conditions tricky. Early scores suggested it was a tough day out on a beautifully presented golf course. A handful of teams in the first few groups returned scores of 36 points or better. Garon Park’s Graham Purser & Bryan Bone were the first team to return a potential winning score of 39 points even with both players failing to score on the first hole. This was then matched by Burnham on Crouch’s Graham Bowers and Mick Clark who also managed to score 39 points but lost out to Garon Park on Countback. These two teams eventually finished fourth and fifth. In third place were Basildon’s Alan & Sue Cable with 40 points. Their consistent round included just one hole on the card with a dropped point. Not only did Alan & Sue win 3rd prize, they also won their respective nearest the hole competitions, so a good day all in all for the Basildon Duo. Claiming second place, also on 40 points, were Colchester’s pairing of Michael Withers & Julie Ruscoe, their 21 point back nine secured the runners-up spot on countback. Our 2018 winning team were Braintree Golf Club’s Craig Greason and John Braintree Golf O’Connor - Winners. Club’s Craig Greason & John O’Connor, who managed a magnificent 43 points which included nine 3 point holes, winning the day by a margin of three points. John’s speech was complimentary of the course and the hospitality on display from Colne Valley and he thanked his playing partners and the Essex Golf Union for such an enjoyable & successful day. Congratulations to all our winners and a huge thank you Braintree Golf Club’s Craig Greason and John O’Connor with Julie Ruscoe and to Colne Valley Golf Club who were fabulous hosts as Michael Withers. always, on and off the course. - 49 -

County Match
ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE Chelmsford Golf Club – Sunday 1st July 2018 unday 1st July saw round 3 of our league program in the England Golf South Eastern Group. This took place at our home venue of Chelmsford Golf Club on a beautiful sunny day. Our S opponents were a strong Hertfordshire outfit, who like us, had won both their opening fixtures and were lying in second place behind us by the slenderest of margins. After our victory over them at Hadley Wood last year no doubt revenge was on their mind so we anticipated a tough match in prospect. This match looked a probable title winner for the victors, so no complacency could creep in. The Essex side boasted 4 home picks for Chelmsford in Michael Gilbert, Arron Edwards-Hill, Ali Plumb and Brandon Meads. With Michael off to college in the USA, this would be his final appearance for Essex this year. Along with Arron they teed up first against Herts pair Ben Harman and James Surridge. A close match for the front 9 with the home lads reaching the turn just one up, however with wins on 13,14 & 15 they closed out the game by 4&3, an impressive start. More was to follow with the games of county Captain Andy May and Ricky Lee winning 4&3 then Will Percival and Brandon Meads matching that against the very strong pair of Luke Colgate and Jack Slater. 3 points out of 3 and in the final game with Ali Plumb and Callum Pipe dormy 2 up, a foursomes whitewash was on the cards. However, showing true fighting spirit the Herts pair made birdie on both the final holes to snatch a well deserved half. 3.5 to .5 up at lunch. Michael was first off in the singles against the putting machine of Laurie Owen and earned a solid 2&1 win leaving only 2 more points required to win the whole match. Herts weren't finished however with Luke Colgate beating Will Percival in game 2, Jack Slater beating Andy May in game 3 and Ricky beaten in game 4 the tide was turning. Deficit reduced with match score standing at 4.5/3.5 all was still in the balance and with Herts veteran James Surridge 3 up with 4 to play in the next game against Callum Pipe it was looking very tight indeed. Callum then shows his mettle winning the 15th and 16th, then an outrageous par from an impossible looking position on 17 to square the match. A half on 18 and game finish all square. So from looking like scores level, Essex clung to a one point lead.Fortunately the last 3 players for Essex of Ali, Arron and Brandon all showed their home course knowledge by each winning their games. Singles score 4.5 to 3.5 for Essex with an overall match score of 8/4 in favour of the Home side. This win cements our place atop the League virtually assuring our place in the final against the winners of the South section league at Frilford Heath in early October Our thanks to host club Chelmsford for an immaculately prepared course and first class hospitality. Next up is the English Golf Mens County Qualifying (6 Man) at Orsett Golf Club on Saturday 14th July Team lineup ... Aron Edwards-Hill, Brandon Meads, Ali Plumb, Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford). Ricky Lee, County Captain Andy May (Boyce Hill), Will Percival (Orsett) and Callum Pipe (Braintree).

ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Bentley Golf Club – 5th & 6th July 2018 he Seniors Championship was hosted by Bentley Golf Club this year where the recent improvements to the clubhouse made a great welcome to the 64 seniors that were due to T compete over the two days. The course was in fantastic condition with greens and fairways running fast due to the heat wave and lack of rain over the past few weeks. The temperature peaked just shy of 30 degrees Celsius on the Thursday which resulted in some tough conditions, especially as there was little wind to help cool the competitors. The scores on day 1 proved that the conditions were tough as few players managed to post anything around par. The CSS for the day rose to 74 from the SSS of 72. Steve Rooney (Orsett), looking to win his third title in as many years got off to a slow start only managing to post a 9 over par round of 81, the same as Bentley’s very own John Moody. Tony Wheals (Orsett) carded a 77, whilst Basildon’s John Wright and Ilford’s Michael Pinner both returned with 75s which looked like it was good enough to go into day 2 leading. Then Ian Moore’s (Maylands) 73 which consisted of 13 pars, 3 bogeys and 2 birdies took the limelight and the top of the leader board going into the second round which was to follow on the Friday. On day two, the competition standard scratch was one higher than day one, confirming conditions were not any easier for the field. Steve Rooney improved on his attempt to defend the title but a poor finish to his round meant he could only manage a total of 160 (+16) and 6th place overall. John Moody managed one better returning a score of 78 on the Friday finishing on 159 for 5th place. John Wright slipped down the leader board with a closing 82 leaving him on 157 (+13) for 4th place overall. In third place was Tony Wheals with a pair of 77s making 154 in EGU President Elect, total., Michael Pinner’s 75 Brian Collins (Left) & Friday’s 76 resulted in Ian Moore (Maylands, Centre) and him guaranteeing second Barry Winch-Furness place as leader in the Captain of Bentley GC. clubhouse with only Ian Moore left in contention. from his last ten holes was more than enough to secure the Championship. A fine display of golf over the two days finishing with a 146 total, 5 shots clear of second place, Michael Pinner. In the handicap categories, the over 55’s winner was Richard Higgins (Stockbrook Manor) with a nett 145, followed by John Moody (Bentley) on 149, third was Terry Knight (Orsett) on 151. The over 60’s winner was James Henderson (Benton Hall) with a nett 149, from Fred Selfe (Belhus Park) on 157. Third was Stephen Rowe (Epping) on 157. For the over 65’s Kieran Leahy (Hainault Forest) took the honours with a two round nett total of 155, closely followed by Edward Keeble (The Rayleigh Club) on 158. For the Over 70’s, John Wisbey (Hainault Forest) won his category with a nett 155. Maurice Atkin (Three Rivers) following him home on 155 for 2nd spot. Our thanks to Bentley Golf Club and Secretary Mark Gallop along with his team for their strenuous efforts in preparing the course clubhouse and catering arrangements to help ensure the championship was run in a smooth and successful manner. We also would like to thank the Captain, Barry Winch-Furness for attending and presenting the prizes to the winners and also the members of Bentley Golf Club, for giving up their course for the duration of the event.
Match Report
ESSEX U18 v MIDDLESEX AND BB&O Hendon Golf Club – Sunday 8th July 2018 ollowing their disappointing result at the England Golf South East Group Qualifying the under 18s County team were back on the golf course a few days later at Hendon Golf Club against F hosts Middlesex and BB&O. With the hot weather continuing the course was fast and bouncy with some of the shorter par fours being within range from the tee. County champion Curtis Knipes lead off for the Essex side and as is becoming a familiar tale made short work of his two opponents, despite not producing his best form. Many much more senior golfers could learn from the way this young man goes about his business in a quiet, methodical and undemonstrative manner. I’m sure there is much more to come from Curtis over the next few years. Big hitting Cai James was similarly able to abbreviate his day’s labour by beating both his opponents relatively comfortably, but it helps when you can drive the green on the 345 yard opening hole, suddenly the course becomes much shorter. With Harry Moncur and Will Dove both emerging from the contest undefeated U18 Inter Counties League each with a win and a half, the match win was Essex v BB&O v Middlesex well in sight. Once the scores were finalised Essex emerged as winners by two points from ESSEX BB&O BB&O with Middlesex trailing a further two MIDDLESEX points adrift. Essex 10, BB&O 8, Middlesex 6. Seniors County Team League Match
HERTFORDSHIRE v ESSEX Moor Park Golf Club – Tuesday 10th July 2018
ssex travelled to Moor Park to be greeted by a thankfully cooler day than of late and a very bouncy golf course but very receptive greens. Unfortunately, we had a slightly below strength E team facing last year’s league winners Hertfordshire, but with four of the usual side absent it gave Essex a chance to blood some new comers into the side. In addition, Mike Partridge of Thorndon Park turned up on the day carrying a damaged knee and we were unsure if he could make the full 18 holes. In the event not only did he make 18 holes, but he came out a winner on the final green beating ex-Hainault Forest golfer Tyrone Carter 1up on the 18th, this match was the first of 8 games to go the full distance to the Par 3, 18th Hole. Ian Moore came to the 18th all square and got his half, similarly Steve Rooney had the same result, so Essex maintained a slim advantage. Mark Whiten came to the last 1 down and a wonderful shot from his opponent left him having to hole a very long putt to have a chance at a half, he missed, and that game was lost. Next came Tony Wheals, playing his first Seniors match for Essex, his match also going down the 18th but with a positive outcome for Tony on his debut. John Wright followed Tony down the final hole, where he had to two putt for the half which he successfully managed. Jeff Mathewson’s opponent hit a really good tee shot on their final hole, but he managed to scramble a half, even so he lost one down, and in the final match coming to the 18th was Mark Lazarus who was 1up coming to 17,but lost the 17th and 18th to lose the game. !""!#$%&'($)*+&*$ $ Of those matches coming to the 18th Essex <$ ",-./01$2/3-45$6,78$',793,$:74; won 3 1/2 to Hertfordshire’s 4 ½, and this +>!$@$!""!#$ &>?"= =!>6( $ reflected that on the day they were the superior GK! ://0$A70B$%/CD$2C3E$F$GH $I3C5$JH side. Match Report
THE CLIFFORDS TROPHY Stockbrook Manor Golf Club – Thursday 19th July 2018 nce again it was a glorious day at Stockbrook Manor Golf Club, with the course wellpresented. The temperature proved to be a test for the field of 51 players, the wind was O challenging but also very welcomed at times throughout the day. The Cliffords Estate continued their support of this event this year sponsoring the main prizes, as always we are grateful for your support of the amateur game in Essex. Order of Merit leader Jordan Slater (Colchester) managed to take an early clubhouse lead by returning a one under par round of 71. Ben Wyatt (The Rayleigh Club) then returned a two under par 70, which was a nice way to set up his afternoon round in potentially his final tournament as an amateur. Zachary Chegwidden (Orsett) also made a hot start carding a three under par 69 to lead for moments until his playing partner Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) went one better finishing with a 68 (-4). Their third group member was Ben Humphrey (Chelmsford) who managed a very respectable level par 72. The course was certainly playing tough in parts, but the scores also suggested a good score could be achieved if you had the strategy and were able to execute it as intended. Joshua Cardy (The Warren) had plotted his way round beautifully, starting on the 10th tee he was standing on his last hole (9th) 6 under par and needing one more birdie for a course record 65. However, a couple of careless shots and a 73 is all Joshua could manage after a disappointing 12 to close his round. This was typical of many scores that were returned on the day due to some holes being very accessible whilst others played havoc with some players scorecards. Two holes in one were also made, one in the morning by Bill Wreathall Callum Hilton showing his course record of 65. (Chelmsford) on the 4th hole, who admitted himself that it wasn’t his best shot, but it got the job done. It is said that there are no pictures on a score card! Alan Angel (West Essex) also made a hole in one on the 17th hole, a nearly 200-yard hole that is a very good test to anyone. Congratulations to Bill and Alan. The afternoon saw a slight improvement on the scoring, with a total of seven players breaking par. Shay McQueen’s (Chelmsford) 70 and Will Percival’s (Orsett) 69 saw them both rally up the leaderboard to finish a respectable tied 7th on 145 (+1). Zachary Chegwidden could only manage a two over par 74 to finish tied fourth with Order of Merit leader Jordan Slater (Colchester) & Ben Humphrey (Chelmsford) all on 143 (-1). Ben Wyatt (The Rayleigh Club) nearly matched his morning round with a one under par 71 Jack Dyer Holding the to finish on 141 (-3) taking 3rd place on his own. The low round of Cliffords Trophy. - 54 -

the day and a new course record for an amateur at Stockbrook Manor was Callum Hilton (The Warren). Callum managed to negotiate his way round in just 65 shots, 7 under par, finishing runner up on a five under par total of 139. Congratulations Callum on a wonderful return to golf after a lengthy period out with injury. So the stage was set for the final group and our morning leader Jack Dyer. Jack returned with a score one better than he managed in the morning round, finishing with a 67 to back up his 68, leaving him on a sensational two round total of 135 (-9), winning by five shots. A fantastic tournament with some formidable golf. The nett prizes were won by Harvey Sullivan (Abridge) with a 142 (-2) who finished runner up to Sam Tawse (Upminster) who managed to return a nett 138 (-6). Congratulations to Harvey and Sam on a successful days golf. We would like to congratulate Jack on his second win of the season and thank Stockbrook Manor on presenting the course Sam Tawse (Upminster) with Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred). in such fine condition as well as making everyone feel very welcome throughout the day. We would also like to thank Richard Higgins, Stockbrook Manor Club Captain for presenting the players with their prizes.

South Eastern Group North – County League Match
ESSEX COLTS v HERTFORDSHIRE COLTS Wanstead Golf Club – Sunday 22nd July 2018
home match of this League Fixture took place on an extremely hot day at Wanstead Golf TAheClub. late withdrawal by one team member left the squad one short. Luckily Kishen Velani of Wanstead came in as a last minute replacement and a good replacement he proved to be. The eight man team was: Will Percival (Capt) & Zach Chegwidden (Orsett), Jack Dyer (Rochford 100), Lukas Warren & George Gennings (Thorndon Park), Josh Read (Three Rivers), George Leversuch & Kishen Velani (Wanstead). The morning foursomes started well for Essex with a 6&5 win for George Leversuch & Kishen followed quickly by a 4&3 win for Jack & George Gennings. The other two tightly contested matches both went to the 17th. Herts won the first of Essex Golf Union Team the two matches 2up. Lukas and Josh were 1up coming to the 17th Competitions are now at the final stages, then Lourie of Herts had an incredible eagle putt to win that hole. below are the draws Game all square. On the 18th a wayward drive from Essex looked for each competition. as if the hole was lost. A second shot to the green and then a poor YOUTH SHIELD SCRATCH chip from Herts looked as if a half might be possible. Then a superb Colchester v Stockbrook Manor Abridge v Boyce Hill birdie putt from Lourie which unfortunately Essex could not Garon Park v Chigwell (Withdrawn) match, gave Herts a 1up win. Morning Foursomes 2 – 2. Orsett v Stoke-by-Nayland THORNTON CUP Afternoon Singles proved to be somewhat of a nail biter. On the Orsett v Thorndon Park 6th tee Essex were only up in two matches. Not much better on Chelmsford v Warley Park the 10th tee. Only one match well up, Jack, who went on to a 5&4 THORNTON CUP PLATE The Essex v Stoke-by-Nayland win. Herts had good wins on games 4, 5 & 6. Of the remaining Canons Brook v Brentwood four matches both Will & Zach won 3&1 on the 17th. Will was LF WOOD CHAMPIONSHIP Basildon v Woolston Manor playing against John Hopkins whom he had played in the away Thorndon Park v Canons Brook match. No ‘Holes in One’ this time for Will but a good time to LF WOOD PLATE Five Lakes v Boyce Hill reverse the previous result. Kishen then won 2&1 on the 17th and Bentley v Maylands George Leversuch finished all square. Afternoon Singles 4½ - 3½ SENIORS TEAM Clacton-on-Sea v Benton Hall An extremely tight overall win of 6½ - 5½ for Essex. They don’t The Rayleigh Club v Boyce Hill come any tighter than that! JOHN DAY TROPHY Our thanks to Wanstead Golf Club for hosting this event and Three Rivers v Benton Hall Theydon Bois v The Essex making everyone feel so welcome.

The large prize table included 1st to 4th, best front and back nine, four nearest the pins and a further chairman’s prize for nearest the pin where all played from the captain’s bunker which raised over £70 for his charity the Essex Air Ambulance. Despite some brief showers of rain a good day was enjoyed by all. GOLF DAY IN MEMORY OF 18 MONTH OLD STANLEY RAISES OVER £15,000
G
olf clubs and businesses from across Norfolk and Suffolk brought together 33 teams to raise £15,079 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at the sixth annual golf day in memory of Stanley McLean. The event takes place at Thorpeness Golf Club and Hotel and was sponsored this year by recruitment agency Seven Resourcing Limited. Golfers started the day with coffee and luxury bacon rolls at the clubhouse. Eighteen holes of golf followed, with woodfired pizzas and gin on offer halfway round the course.
The evening was compèred by BBC Suffolk’s Wayne Bavin and consisted of a three-course meal, prize giving – the winning team came from Gotelee Solicitors – and auction. Lots included rounds of golf at various UK courses, a week-long stay at a villa in France and a Newmarket Racecourse VIP package. Victoria Matthews, EACH Suffolk Corporate Fundraiser, said: “It was a great day. All the teams enjoyed themselves and can be proud they’ve contributed to raising such a significant amount in memory of Stanley McLean. EACH would like to say a massive thank you to Brad McLean, Thorpeness Golf Club &
Hotel and sponsors Seven Resourcing, as well as all the 33 teams who took part.” Stanley was born on 2 January, 2011. He had a heart condition called tetraology of fallots, further complicated by a missing pulmonary valve. He underwent surgery at eight days old and again at five months. Further surgery followed in July 2012 after a routine check showed the conduit in his heart was narrowing. Complications occurred during surgery and sadly Stanley died, aged 18 months. His parents, Brad and Debbie McLean, from Wymondham, received bereavement counselling from EACH and have since become stalwart fundraisers for both the regional charity and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) - where Stanley spent months of his life - having set up the Stanley McLean Trust that had raised over an incredible £110,000 before this most recent golf day. Brad is General Manager at Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel. He has also been an EACH Trustee since 2016. He said: “Having used the services of EACH and now being involved as an EACH Trustee, I understand first-hand the amazing work they do. Every year we step back and are incredibly grateful for all the support of golf clubs, members and businesses all across the UK who donate prizes, sponsor and play in Stanley’s golf day. We can think of no better way to remember our little boy than to give just a small amount back to a place that helped us during our most difficult time and continues every day to do the same for so many families in East Anglia. We want to thank everyone who played, Seven Resourcing for their generous sponsorship, as well as every business and golf club that donated so generously on the day.” EACH cares for 360 children and young people with life-threatening conditions across the region, and supports 440 family members. For more information about the charity go to www.each.org.uk.

SPARKLING DAY AT COLNE VALLEY
O
n the 1st June Colne Valley Golf Club held a Charity Golf Day in aid of Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. Sixty golfers took part who are members of various Essex Golf Clubs. Our main sponsors were The Woolpack Coggeshall and Red Fox Brewery, we also had hole sponsors, a raffle and an auction. In all £3325 was raised. Attending the presentation were Russell Barnes of Red Fox Brewery, Craig and Mel Barrett of the Woolpack Inn, Shaun Graham of the GMB Union, John Hilder of Water Direct, Barry Seymour, Graham and Chris Hilder.
GREAT DAY FOR MIKE
C
olchester Golf Club Captain, Mike Withers hosted his Captain's Day which was won by Gill and Barrie Minns. Another hot, cloudless day, was top of the menu at Mike Withers’ day. His charity for this year the mental health charity MIND. The weather certainly did not bother the Minns’, their card with 48 points just won the day from two other pairings, all returning magic 48 points in this better ball competition. After a complicated countback, which was finally decided on the last three holes, the second placed pair were Rob and Nesta James with Tim Rogers and John Redden dropping to third. With rock hard fairways flattering drives, this, combined with watered greens, meant that there was little doubt a good score was on the cards, but to have three the same is not usual. The way the Minns’ played was ideal, with each complimenting the other. This was their secret, plus a back nine of 24 putting them clear in the countback. On the par three 16th Cai James ran the “Beat
the pro” and raised £305, all added to the charity pot. Nearest the pin prizes went to Mathew Michael on the 13th and John Fisk on the 4th. Nesta James won the longest drive, nearest to a central rope running up the fairway. After his prize-giving the Captain provided a BBQ attended by many of the players’ families with a Bouncy Castle and all.

WENDY’S THYMIC FUNDRAISER ix months of planning Wendy’s charity golf and aggressive Thymic Carcinoma which Wendy S day in aid of research into Thymic tumours is battling. was here. Wendy’s Thymic Fundraiser (WTF) However the goal of raising awareness and Golf Day day was going to be very special and popular. This became apparent after 45 minutes of a few text and e mail messages when 100 of Wendy’s friends and my clients scrambled to be a part of this memorable and emotional day. I wanted to cover everything which represented “Wendy” so I worked on three surprises for the day. I asked everyone to wear the colour purple (Wendy’s favorite colour) to demonstrate their respect for Wendy. The field all obliged which looked stunning for the group photo and on the course. I invited my child hood hero six time World Champion snooker player Steve Davis to play in addition he kindly donated a signed cue for the auction. The biggest surprise was Wendy’s close friend and two time Ladies European Tour winner Joanne Mills who flew from Australia to play in the day. I paired Joanne with Steve Davis who were the perfect buggy buddies! The planning commenced back in November 2017 with Wendy looking at her second Major thoracic surgery early January 2018. The July date would have given her time to recover and to play golf in a buggy with her friends. Unfortunately this was not the case due to the spread of the rare
much valuable funding for thymic tumours was something close to my heart, I wanted to gain maximum exposure which pointed to avenues of Radio and TV which I achieved. The Event was played as a team event over 18 holes in searing temperatures of 35 degrees however 240 bottles of water plus enough for our volunteers coupled with Pimms, home made cakes and gifted bananas ensured everyone was well catered for. The finale of any charity day is the evening with the chance to make a difference during the raffles, auction, silent auction and three major prizes consisting of a VIP helicopter trip, Footjoy My Joy Golf Shoes and 4 balls at Ryder Cup venue The Belfry and home of England Golf Woodhall Spa. The speeches were always going to be the hardest part which was fitting Wendy completed the evening receiving a standing ovation from the packed room. I am delighted to announce the Golf day and the Virgin Just Giving page has raised just under £18,000 which is outstanding for one event considering our target was £20,000.

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER
