rare Thymic Carcinoma chest cancer. She endured back to back treatments with 2 rounds of different chemotherapy, two pioneering chest and lung surgeries, radiotherapy and two immunotherapy trials. This in itself has been instrumental worldwide to the expert medical teams trying to broaden their understanding of this aggressive cancer. However the Wendy’s Thymic Fundraiser Golf day which Sarah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional arranged at Three Rivers GC earlier this year where she is the Head Teaching Professional raised £18,000. Sarah received some exciting news a few weeks ago and will be visiting with the research team from Japan, Italy and the UK to watch the science of how the funds will be used in a ground breaking research project. Before Wendy passed away she knew Sarah had set a date for the now annual 2019 Wendy’s Thymic Fundraiser which will be played for on July 25th 2019. The format will be the same as 2018 but a trophy will be played for which has been kindly donated by a long standing Golfing Girl who has so much admiration for Wendy, a true Golfing Girl who touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. Does Ball Fitting Really
Help?
G
ood question and one I get asked often. I suppose my honest answer would be yes it does but in my opinion it is generally fitted the wrong way round. For me the most important aspect for any golf ball is going to be around the green. Believe it or not when it comes to putting the golf ball is hugely important ... sad thing is golf balls are often fitted with the driver first, then a mid iron and quite often no love is shown to the little shots around the green. I think it’s fair to say that the correct ball may add a few yards to your driver, but just a few! Whereas the correct ball around the green could take shots off your score. So, let’s way that up ... yards versus shots – I know what one I would rather have. By far the most important aspect of this for me though is that I believe every golfer should always
use the same ball – whatever type it may be. This will offer the same feel and consistency off the putter and short shots whilst giving the golfer the opportunity to see how the ball reacts on the green. Even your practice bag should be made up of some of the old balls you used on the course so you get the same feel even when practicing. Finally, please do not think that the most expensive ball is always the best ball, it’s really not the case ... in fact quite often it’s actually the worst ball you could play! So, a few years ago I tested every ball on the market – turned out I should be playing a pink ladies ball (not mentioning no names here) … but that’s a whole other story! I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and New Year, thank you for all your support this year and roll on 2019!

SOPHIE MADDEN FROM WEST ESSEX GOLF CLUB IS THE OFFICIAL #1 PLAYER IN NCAA D2 ort Lauderdale, Fla. – NCAA Division II women's golf has a F new No. 1 player, as Nova Southeastern senior Sophie Madden has officially taken over the top spot according to the latest Golfstat rankings. A First Team All-American a year ago, Madden has already earned two wins this fall in just three tournament appearances. In addition to her victories at the Jacksonville Classic and Shark Invitational, she also collected a fourth-place finish at the Saint Leo Invitational, while bringing her adjusted scoring average down to 71.80. "Sophie reaching number one in the rankings is a testament to the hard work she puts into her game on a daily basis, and I couldn't be more proud," said head coach Heather Wall. "Although it is still very early in the season, this is positive reinforcement and will only motivate her more. She has always been a very hard worker, but now she believes she is as good as anyone, which has been a gamechanger for her. She is a great leader and all of her teammates look up to her." Madden and the Sharks will conclude the fall portion of their season next week at the Rollins Legends Invitational in Orlando, Fla. To stay up-to-date, follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_WGolf.

A DAY TO REMEMBER FOR ROMY tarting the weekend with a handicap of 15 Romy Bozier from Colchester Golf Club S certainly made it a remembrance weekend for this particular fifteen year old. Coming second in the Junior Remembrance Stableford on Saturday with 42 points she then won the main Poppy Appeal on Sunday against 107 members with an even more startling round of 43 points. These phenomenal scores earned her, apart from the normal reduction in handicap an Exceptional Scoring Reduction and she will now compete with a well-deserved handicap of ten. On this special Remembrance Day all competitors on the course and members and staff in the Clubhouse paid their respects by honouring the two minutes silence Bozier’s round on Sunday had just the four bogeys in it, plus an uncharacteristic treble bogey on the twelfth. Certainly a round to end the year on and a weekend she will not forget.
BRILLIANT YEAR FOR SULLY even year old Sully Donald from Warren Golf Club has spent the past year competing in S events held by the British Junior Golf Tour, he competed against boys and girls in the youngest age category. Sully, a member of The Warren Junior Academy has been a golf addict since he could walk. This year was his first season competing on tour and has loved every minute of it. The British Junior Golf Tour are not-for-profit organisation, taking families to compete at different golf clubs at the weekends and school holidays, sometimes supporting golf clubs with their own junior opens. Each event the players are awarded Order of Merits points to be added up at
their ultimate Tour Championship. On Sunday 7th October the prestigious Foxhills in Surrey played host to the 2018 Tour Championship. Sully played 18 holes on The Manor Course against 21 other golfers in his age category. Sully played a solid round and shot a score of 76 taking the Runner Up trophy just one shot behind the Winner Lucas Skilbeck from North Yorkshire who scored 75. For the long awaited Order of Merit trophies Sully earnt enough points to bring home the 3rd place trophy behind Dylan Barney from South Herts and Winner Sebastian Duffield from Downshire. Golfers from all over Britain compete once or twice a month, Sully competed in 16 events over the year bringing home eight 3rd places and four runner up trophies. Sky Sports added to the occasion and the players nerves by filming all the age categories. This can be seen on Sky Game Changers on demand . Any juniors thinking of taking their golf further and wanting to compete should visit www.juniorgolftour.co.uk. Next season Thorpe Hall Golf Club will be hosting an event for Essex with some more being announced soon.

CHANGES AT BRAINTREE GOLF CLUB olfers can be a pretty sceptical bunch when it comes to the number 13. In some G professional events that number is even omitted from start sheets and other items. At Braintree Golf Club the 13th hole has been a fairly comfortable task to take on, but not anymore. It used to be a gentle uphill two-shotter with little to worry about apart from a few bunkers. Appropriately, it even carries a stroke index of 13. However, a major change has taken place in recent weeks which has given the 13th a whole new perspective. The ponds on the adjacent 16th and 14th have been linked by a babbling brook which runs across the 13th fairway just in front of the green. Consequently, this presents a fresh problem for the golfer to overcome. Fountains have been added to both ponds which gives this part of the Stisted course a much more artistic vista.
On behalf of the club, Andrew Goldsmith, Director and Chairman of the Course Committee, said: “We have been focused on how to improve this area of the course, not only the overall standard but to create a touch of theatre to the area. “Unfortunately, our grand plans were out of reach and budget, so we approached the Development Fund Committee for financial support and following extensive conversations, they agreed to back our project, in part, financially. “This has allowed us to work with Martin Guy Developments and Prime Irrigation to create an area that will both challenge the golfer and improve the overall image, feel and aesthetics of our course” The area is now a commanding feature of this part of the layout while there is little doubt that it adds a fresh challenge for the golfer to overcome.

18 holes competition. Returning to the clubhouse and very cold, the players were more than ready for their curry meal. The presentation then took place with Ray Hampton the winner, 42 points, runner-up Alan Filtness with 40 points. Nearest the pins winners were Cyril Talian, Geoff Kemp, Tony Childs, Evan Warrior and Nearest the Line, Eamond Legg. Diane Thompson the Lady Captain, attended the event to receive the money raised from the raffle of two large food hampers donated by MotorAid. The £350 raised to be split between Diane's charity The Sick Children's Trust and the Men's Captain’s Charity, The Sunflower Suite Queens Hospital. - 16 -

Swish the stick build speed
P
lease stop trying to slow down, the ball is only going to fly a shorter distance! Personally I am always trying to build speed especially now as the years are advancing, and winter provides an ideal opportunity to improve your speed without even having to wrap up and head for the driving range. I use this old graphite shaft from an old driver, it still has a grip but I have cut the club head off so it has now become a great practice aid called a swish stick. I’m sure most of your pro shops would have old unwanted shafts for you to acquire. All I would like you to do is head out into the garden for a few minutes every day and swing the swish stick as I am doing in Pictures 2, 3 and 4.
1
I would like you to be aware of the noise the stick makes and the faster you are able to build the speed the louder the noise or swish becomes. Ideally the loudest swish should be on or slightly post impact. A note of caution try not to hit the tip of the shaft into the ground but swing through the air above the ground. Let’s see if you can build more speed this winter and the next time your friend tells you you are going to fast thank them for their praise. To find out more on how to improve your play why not join me this spring in Portugal at my residential golf school in the sun. Full details on garypikegolf.com

he duo from Five Lakes Hotel Golf and Country Club proved by winning the SkyCaddie PGA ProCaptain Challenge in Mallorca that advancing years are neither a reason for not enjoying golf nor being successful at it. Despite a combined age of 110 years plus, Gary Carter, the head PGA Professional at the club which lies between Colchester and Maldon in Essex, and Nigel Popper, its captain, left a more youthful field in their wake to claim the trophy and £5,000 first prize. “I reckon we’re the oldest pairing here,” said a delighted Carter after he and his partner completed two negotiations of the Sol Muntaner course at Golf Arabella in five-under-par to amass 77 Stableford points.

RESPECT YOUR GOLF COURSE THIS WINTER ne thing we would like to clearly communicate is over winter all Course O Managers are keen to allow golfers to play golf as long as it does not have a detrimental effect on the golf course, members and visiting golfers can play their part by respecting traffic management measures your course has in place over winter. If anyone remembers the article we contributed in September it detailed how 2018 has been the toughest year in living memory because of extreme weather events and recovery from the summer drought has been patchy. Winter is the season where courses are susceptible to damage and therefore traffic management is vital and protection of weak/worn areas paramount for future spring recovery. Greenstaff will do this via a variety of methods, areas might be roped off or hoops placed in the ground, if this is the case please don’t walk over the barrier, follow the directions given by the greenkeepers, this maybe via white lines or signs such as these.
If golfers think this doesn’t apply to them then all they are doing disrespecting their course, the hard working greenstaff who will be outside in all weathers at this time of year and their fellow members/players. Our message is don’t be selfish and respect the golf course otherwise tighter restrictions will be employed such as buggy and trolley bans or even course closures. There is now very limited grass growth as soil temperatures decline, measurements such as
Growth Degree Days (GDD) and Growth Potential (GP) will be negligible so it is very important that golfers look to avoid taking divots especially on tees if possible. Greens will be receptive and therefore pitch marks more pronounced than during the summer, sometimes an approach shot that pitches on the green from a substantial height may displace a small section of turf, please replace this and always repair your pitch mark using the correct technique. Never lift the soil upwards always insert your pitchfork at the back of the pitch mark, push the grass forward and towards the centre, also never twist the pitchfork this just damages and shears the grass roots. Many greenkeeping teams are currently busy completing winter projects hopefully before the weather or ground conditions turn detrimental, on social media we have seen great examples of new bunkers and tees being constructed. Drainage work and tree management programs plus new paths at various courses plus improvements to water hazards. This requires a wide array of skills including project management, if you would like to know more about the work of greenkeeping teams around Essex you can follow us on twitter @essexbigga or on Facebook Essex Section Bigga. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the readers of Essex Golfer.

TaylorMade launches ‘Rory’ junior sets aylorMade Golf has joined forces with Rory T McIlroy to create a new range of equipment designed specifically for juniors. The two TaylorMade Rory Junior Sets are designed for those aged 4-7 and and 8-12, and comprise five- and seven-club sets respectively, and come with a matching stand bag.
champion Francesco Molinari. The new Studio Stock Series includes the SS2, SS28 Slot Back and SS38 models, made from 303 stainless steel and given the softest face milling in the company’s history from new CNC-machining advancements. The latest Queen B range includes the re-engineered QB5 and QB6, plus the all-new QB10 and features Bettinardi’s trademark micro honeycomb face milling, allowing for a muted, yet crisp feel at impact for players looking for constant speed and feel. The new putters have been perfected following Tour feedback from Molinari and other brand ambassadors, including Matt Kuchar, Haotong Li and Fred Couples, plus the expertise of master craftsman Bob Bettinardi. The 2019 range comprises 12 models across its three series, which also includes the award-winning BB models (BB1, BB29, BB39 & BB56). “These new putters have been proven on the game’s biggest stage, along with being significantly tested at our headquarters to produce the best range we have ever had,” said Robert Bettinardi, CEO and Founder. “Each putter is hand-crafted in the USA from a single piece of high-quality milled carbon or stainless steel using hitech CNC milling technology and expert craftsmanship. www.bettinardi.com
Incorporating many of the same technologies found in TaylorMade’s adult equipment, each club has been specifically designed for the needs of the younger golfer, with age-appropriate shaft lengths, flexes and lofts. McIlroy said: “Growing up, golf was an extremely important part of my life. It allowed me to stay active, enjoy the outdoors and have fun within a competitive sport. I partnered with TaylorMade to design the Rory Junior Set to give kids an easy introduction to golf so they can have the same opportunity I had to fall in love with the sport.” The five-piece 4-Plus set has separate models for boys and girls, and is designed for those between 42-52 inches tall. The set comprises a 400cc titanium driver with 16 degree of loft, a hybrid (30°), 7-iron (38°), sand wedge (54°) and a putter. The seven-piece 8-Plus set adds in a fairway wood (24°) and a 9-iron (44°) and features slightly stronger lofts and longer graphite shafts for younger players between 52-60 inches tall. Each set comes with a stand bag and also includes a special St Bernard headcover, inspired by the one McIlroy uses on his TaylorMade M3 driver, while the clubs themselves also have ‘Rory’ inscribed on the heads. The Rory Junior Sets go on sale on December 7th. - 28 -

UFFORD PARK HOSTS FIFTH DISABLED BRITISH OPEN EVENT fford Park Woodbridge Hotel, Golf and Spa hosted its fifth Disabled British Open in U September 2018, which saw 25 golfers take to the course as part of the annual two-day championship. The Disabled British Open is open to participants from across the globe with a recognised disability or impairment. This includes amputees and wheelchair golfers as well as those with learning, hearing or visual impairments. Handicaps of the competitors range from three to 28 and seven of the participants were playing off of single figures! The golfers were once again impressed by the facilities at Ufford Park, with the course boasting a fleet of 16 buggies along with storage and charging facilities. The condition of the greens allowed golfers to travel on the putting surface with their mobility buggies. Volunteers from the club assisted the participants with caddying, ball spotting and bunker raking. The hotel, access and catering facilities at Ufford Park are also well suited for those with disabilities, with the hotel recently investing in a wheelchair accessible picnic table on the terrace of The Park Bar and Restaurant. The winner of the gross prize this year was Ashley Harris, with Brad Smith picking up the nett award.

WINE TASTING AT STOKE BY NAYLAND
O
n Saturday the 24th of November, the two new captains of the golf club, John Sandford and Diana Harris, hosted their first mixed event of their year, the Beaujolais Brunch. This is a mixed medal scramble played on the Gainsborough course. A shotgun start allowed all ten teams to finish at the same time and then enjoy a meal in the Constable rooms. Originally this was designed to taste the new Beaujolais wine, fresh out of France, but now it is just an event with some good wine taken with the meal. First place, with a nett score of 56, were Bev and Ian Thompson together with Jo Little and Del Prichard. In second place, with a score of 57, were the perennial runners up, Mandy and Nigel Byham with Suzanne and Duncan Smith.
Ian, Diana, John, Bev, Jo and Del; all holding their prize of a bottle of wine.

For Better Iron Play ‌ Using The Club Golfers Trackman T
op Tour Professionals are shooting lower than ever on a regular basis. Shooting 61 was uncommon a few years ago but now every week someone shoots that number or less! There are a number of factors for this, in my opinion it’s precision iron play. Precision iron shots are key so this is how to improve the INITIAL start line of your iron shots. Key factors are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Face angle (impact) Club path (impact) Angle of attack (steep or shallow) Shaft plane (impact) Center strike (where on the face)
Fig 2. Club golfers Trackman. 38 yards away 2 feet apart is approximately 1 Degree of separation.
All of the above can be measured with a Trackman but if you do not have access to one this will help you get the ball started on line!
1. IMPORTANT get the lie angle of your irons checked by a reputable club fitter. Without this you cannot expect to work on start line. Using a club face indicator (Fig 1) will help during your practice. 2. Use some alignment rods (Fig 1) Placed 4-5 yards ahead in line with your start line. Hit a few shots with a mid iron to see if you can start the ball through the rods. Note how many go through and which side the misses are. 3. If you have a consistent shot shape (draw or fade) use one rod and note the amount of times you start the ball flight to the left (fade) and to the right (draw). Note how successful you are. This drill will tell you how much club face control you have.
Fig 1. Lie angle perfect, club and body aligned to middle 3rd of green.
4. (Fig 2) This is a way for you to see approximately how good your alignments are and how many degrees your club face is open or shut at impact. The cones are approximately 1 degree of separation apart.

COURSE MANAGEMENT TIPS
TO REDUCE YOUR SCORES ourse Management or strategy are hugely important C and very often this skill does not receive the attention it deserves. The coming winter months is the time to work on your technical adjustments for the Spring. Let’s start to broaden our “on course knowledge” which will help you reduce unnecessary dropped shots and teach you smart golf. Here are three points which I encourage you to consider next time you play which I am confident alone will help your score.
1. Let’s be very definite with our target selection which incidentally will be very different to those balmy Summer evenings back in August. It may mean for example laying up in front of a hazard with a 3 wood instead of trying to carry which with optimal reduced carry distance and conditions may simply not be possible. Don’t always try to access those tightly placed flag positions, we want to keep out of those winter bunkers at all costs! Centre of the green in line with your shot pattern is ideal. 2. Make your practice swing to mimic the shot in hand, both physically, technically and mentally many of you are aware I am in favour of your practice swing to be completed well behind the golf ball. This is a huge part of the pre-shot routine which I will cover in next months article. 3. If you miss the fairway remember the saying “Avoid the first obstacle” I see many golfers compound error after error so don’t automatically be swayed by the overall distance you have to the green. Assess the situation you are faced with full focus on the shot in hand. This may mean a more lofted club to cope with the wet longer rough or reduced loft to avoid the overhanging branch. Enjoy your winter golf but approach your next round with a different mind set using “Sarah’s Smart Strategy.” Remember everyone” There is golf and Sarah Bennett there is exhibition golf!”

COLES TAKES BRAINTREE CROWN under par score of 66. In second place was Michael Vandenberg from Rochford Golf Club one shot behind followed by Mason Papple from Stock Brook Country Club a further 2 shots adrift. Several category 1 amateurs played a concurrent competition and the spoils were shared by 3 players, John Bradford from Braintree, Jamie Richards from Abridge and Josh Cardy, all returning a 1 over par score of 72.
Robert Coles from Maylands, winner of the Braintree event and also the Algarve Pro-Am.

ALGARVE PRO-AM
A
first trip to Portugal for the Essex PGA proved to be a great success despite one day’s very unseasonal weather when most of the year’s rainfall fell on the Amendoiera complex. However, this did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the 14 Professionals and their amateur teams in this 54 hole tournament. There were two competitions, a strokeplay event for the Professionals and a team event for the best two stableford scores from the team of 1 Professional and 3 amateurs.
The heavily bunkered Faldo course at Amendoiera.
Day 1 was on the Faldo course in windy conditions and scoring was not easy. The leading Professional score was Jason Levermore from Little Channels with a 2 under par 70 closely followed by Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club on 71, being the only under par scores on the first day. The team scores were equally low with Jason’s team registering a stableford score of 79 which represents 7 under
par for the best 2 scores. Day 2 was on the more forgiving O’Connor course and although the rain continued unabated for the whole day, scoring was much better. Robert Coles returned an impressive 68 and his team roared into contention by coming in with 88 stableford points, 16 under par. This was equalled by the team with Mark Baker from Colchester Golf Club. In the Pro event Levermore shot 70 to leave the Professional event very finely balanced with only one shot separating the top two players. The team event was also very close and any one of 4 teams was in contention for the top prize. And so to the final day which was fortunately played in typical Algarve sunshine; scoring was again very good and the Professional event went right to the last few holes. Eventually the title went to Robert Coles who scored a fine 67 in response to Jason Levermore’s 68 to win by 2 shots and take the first prize cheque. Another 67 was recorded by Steve Cipa from South Essex Golf Centre which pushed him up to a clear third place. The team competition ended with Robert Coles’ team of Paul Kelly, Lukas Warren and Tim Coles (no relation) scoring another 88 points to win by 2 points from the team with Steve Cipa, Alan Coles, Steve Ling and Andy Watson. In joint third place were the teams with Jason Levermore and Phil Wesley from Orsett Golf Club.

LEVERSUCH SHOWS THE PROS THE WAY AT FRINTON! he Essex PGA returned to Frinton Golf Club after an absence of a few years and it will T certainly not be too long before they return after playing in perfect conditions for the first week in November. A good field of Professionals and category one amateurs enjoyed a course presented in excellent conditions with some of the best greens that we have enjoyed all year. The Professional event was dominated by last season’s 1 and 2 on the Order of Merit, Jason Levermore and Robert Coles. This time it was Levermore who took the spoils with a 4 under par score of 67 to win by one shot from Coles and in joint second place Brett Taylor from Rivenhall Oaks. However, the Professionals were outscored by young George Leversuch from Wanstead Golf Club who posted no less than 9 birdies in a remarkable score of 7 under par 64 to beat the best Professional score by 3 shots. Also scoring very well was Adam Jones, again from Wanstead Golf Club with a 2 under par score of 69.

ARE YOU IN DESPAIR? IF SO, WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE ACTION TO BE BETTER?
W
hen you have been involved in the game of golf as long as I have, which is 42 years, you realise you have seen it all but more importantly experienced it all. During that period, which is most of my life I only started to see problems when I was 14. I got the yips in my Putting and then this put pressure on the rest of my game. I battled with highs and lows, but lows definitely being more than highs! I reached a point where I didn’t want to play and injury gave me the excuse not to compete, but I am making a comeback for 2019 at Age 46 in January. My goal is to play European Senior Tour Golf in 2023! Why is that last paragraph important? Well for me, being a Mind Factor Coach and a Zen Golf Coach including Zen Putting Mechanics, I have learnt new techniques and new ways to develop a better understanding of how golf works. Each of us are different and need an understanding of how we as individuals need to be helped, as we learn at different speeds and more importantly need to have systems or what I call processes to put together in our training off the course to help while we play on the course. Looking back on 2018, how would you view your own golf? Are you slipping down a slippery slope and you are so far removed from the player you were? Have you become stagnant and golf is starting to be boring, but you love the game? An area of your game has become so detrimental that you are scared or embarrassed when playing it? I honestly and fully understand it. What if you took the plunge and decided to take action on how you feel and begin to make changes to your game. How does this make you feel? Hopefully, it makes you feel better, but the only way to help yourself is to take action and take control. All my clients are helped in many
ways to develop in a number of ways through something that was introduced to me in my Zen training. They are physical, technical, mental, emotional, social and spirit of the game. My view is this. If we look at golf from an holistic approach we have an opportunity to view your game from any angle, we then have a how and why we can make a change to your whole approach to your game or aspects of it. My question to you all is this. Would you like to be a better player? If the answer is yes, the challenge has to be over 12 months. In that period you have time to see if the changes you are making are making a difference. Nick Faldo took 3 golfing seasons to see his changes go from Tour Winner to Major Winner, but whatever your goals, you have to have a plan! If you want a different you, please email or call me, with initial consultation starting from £25. Why suffer, when help is only a fingertip away. Merry Christmas and Happy Golfing for 2019,

2019 CLUB TEAM COMPETITION DRAWS
O
n the 12th November the Club Team Competition Draws took place for 2019 at the County Office in Witham. Like every year there were some matches drawn to play each other that will surely raise some eyebrows. Most noticeably the two teams that reached the Norman Plum Final in 2018 are set to play one another in the very first round of the competition in 2019 as The Warren were drawn against Chelmsford. The Leslie F Wood Shield first round draw has thrown out some local derbies with Colchester hosting Clacton, Colne Valley hosting Braintree, and Wanstead are at home against Ilford. 2018 winners, Canons Brook, will start their defence of the title at home to Mardyke Valley. The John Day Trophy entries have grown in number this year which means that there will be a few first round matches one of which sees the 2018 champions, Three Rivers, making a short trip to Forrester Park to start their 2019 campaign. The two finalists of the 2018 Seniors Team Championship find themselves with away draws set to be played on or by the 12th of April. Warley Park host the 2018 champions, The Rayleigh Club, whilst losing finalists, Benton Hall, find themselves travelling to the north-east corner of the County to face Harwich & Dovercourt in their opening match. The Thornton Challenge Cup is always the most anticipated draw of the season, with the County office receiving dozens of calls from members of clubs querying when it will be drawn. It’s fortunate in many ways as without the continual reminders it could well be forgotten amongst everything else that needs doing! The title holders Chelmsford receive a bye in the first round along with one of the other favourites in the 2019 competition, Orsett. There will also be four clubs from outside the county participating, Muswell Hill, Enfield, East Hearts & Bishops Stortford all entered. Bishops Stortford being the only entrants from outside the county with a home draw, finding themselves against Burnham on Crouch.

Build Your
Foundations First uild solid foundations before you start building the walls and roof ...You would B never dream of building a house without good stable foundations, treat your body the same! The walls and roof will break without those foundations. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Basically, improve core function, develop functional movement patterns and strengthen postural muscles. This is prepping your body for strength and conditioning and power work. The tiny stabiliser muscles in the body are always overlooked as the visual response is nothing like the big global muscles response to training. However, weakness in the stabiliser muscles in golf is almost like firing a cannon from a canoe!
WHAT ARE THE FOUNDATIONS?
n Abdominals ... internal obliques, external obliques, transverse abdominals n Gluteus Medius, the butt! n The back n Integration of the body ... getting the body to work as a “team n Shoulder complex n Posture WHERE DO WE START?
Get a coach, follow a programme and see the results a lot faster! It takes time ... building strong foundations takes stretching, mobilisations, repetition and patience. The fun stuff have to be earnt! Use the winter to lay these foundations, its the perfect opportunity to get ready for the spring! Happy Christmas Everyone. - 46 -

SCARLET LADIES GOLF SOCIETY CHRISTMAS OUTING
hat a great day of giggles, fun and golf at Stock Brook Manor Golf and W Country Club. Who knew getting so wet and playing in the dark could be so much fun. A quick shower, a very tasty Christmas dinner and a glass of bubbles saw us all in good festive mood. Our Society Scarlet Ladies started out three years ago with nine ladies, we are now around twenty five and we are made up from members of Regiment Way, Bentley, Braintree, Brentwood and
our newest member from Stock Brook. Our handicaps range from 17- 35 We believe in friendly banter, good humour and golf ... with a few bubbles after. We played a group game with a colour ball counting as double points. The day was won by Sandra Moss, Youngha Lim and Valerie Hale. A big thank you to Stock Brook’s Jonathan Watts and his staff for making our day a successful one.

START GETTING READY FOR THE NEW SEASON NOW! ith the weather changing it is easy to let the winter months drift past and not take W any action in regards to your golf. You may want to take a break and that is great but are there some things you could do now that will have an effect when the new season starts next April. If you can work on some things over the winter then you can hit the ground running next year. HAVE A REVIEW OF THE YEAR – Have a
think about what you did well over the past year and what you could do better. Write down 3 things you did well and enjoyed and 3 things you want to improve for next year. If you have a coach, this is something you can discuss with them. Then you can make a plan to address these issues for next year.
ON COURSE GOLF CONSULTATION
WORK ON YOUR FLEXIBILITY – Being flexible for golf is very important and winter is a great time for this. It helps the swing function better, prevents injury and you will feel better. Working on this with a fitness professional or signing up for a weekly class of pilates or yoga can really help you golf.
Making a few small changes and taking action over the drab wintery months can make a big difference so you get off to a great start next year. - 48 -

GREAT DAY FOR BRIAN AND PAUL
I
t was twenty five years ago that Brian Evans Frinton Golf Club and Paul Nunny Colchester Golf Club were captains at their respective Clubs and they arranged the first match between the clubs all those years ago. They both at the time played together for Colchester Hockey Club. To celebrate the 25th fixture between the two golf clubs they presented the Elizabethan Bowl as a trophy to be played for annually. The picture shows Simon Martin-Redman,
currant captain of Frinton GC, handing the newly presented trophy to Mike Withers Colchester’s victorious captain when the match was played this year. Also in the picture are Jim Wilkinson Colchester GC Captain, Paul Nunny and Brian Evans.
WELL DONE RIVENHALL he Quiz Night at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Club on the 9th November 2018 raised T £551 for the charity Dememtia, to date this year we have raised £2212. This has been achieved by two Quiz Evenings and a Charity Golf Day, we expanded the golf day this year to include not only members of the Club but family and friends. Raffles were held when we had visiting clubs to play friendlies, and throughout the year we have had a golf sweepstake and guess the amount of tees in the jar, anything to raise a bit more money. We plan to put money in the Charity Box instead of giving Christmas cards. - 49 -
ENJOY THE FESTIVITIES AND YOUR
WINTER GOLF! o have you got your winter golf plans in place? You’ll hear some golfers say they’re S hanging their clubs up until March, but why? The winter shouldn’t stop us from making good plans for our future golf. Be realistic in what you can work on and seek advice from experts in each particular field. The Driving Range To get the benefit of time spent at the range it’s key to ‘practise properly’ and not to just ‘beat balls!’ Identify your weaker areas and work on these. We are all good at practising things we’re already good at! (Just think about that for a while!) To gain maximum benefit, split your practise into three sections of the same duration i.e. a 45 minute session can be split into 3 x 15 minute sessions.
1. Master the mechanics - with advice from a PGA professional improve not just your swing but the short game mechanics too. Focus your attention on set-up, alignment and strike. 2. Shot repertoire - Work on developing more shots - e.g. punch, recovery, shaping and pitching distance control. Punching a shot into a headwind on the range should give you huge confidence when you’re faced with that on the course. 3. Play golf! - use your imagination, visualise and play a number of holes from courses you have played previously. Use only one chance per shot - there’s far more consequence that way, which in reality, is exactly how it is on the golf course when you’re playing! 4. Buddy practise! Why not take a friend to your practise session and then have mini competitions? Remember, courses can play tougher during the winter so be kind to yourself with regard to scores. Have a great festive period and we’ll see you in 2019!

n October, at Canons Brook Golf Club, the Committee were joined by many club organisers, Captains and Officials to hold the Annual General Meeting, and witness the Draw for 2019. Our thanks to Neil Simpson at Canons Brook for supporting us with all the arrangements! I am very pleased to be able to announce that the Competition has maintained its numbers for 2019, with the edition of Fairlop Waters and Belfairs Golf Clubs, so 48 clubs are competing again Full details of the 2019 Draw is held on our website at www.jubileecup.com. Here you can see the make-up of the EIGHT Divisions that drive the initial 4 rounds of League matches www.jubileecup.com/matches2019/divix19.html
And specifically the detailed Competition information can be seen here: which shows who plays who, team against team in these four rounds. They will compete for League points, to enable them to go through into the multiple levels of Playoff rounds. Jubilee Captains or organisers now have all they need to arrange matches with their opponents, including full contact details for the opposition on our website under “Competing Clubs” – even now, I have seen already our first match organised for Round 1 early in April 2019 when The Notleys are away to Brentwood Golf Club. With the help of Essex Golfer, you can see here how these initial rounds are to be played out, and the “play by” dates matches need to complete by. With a nod also to closing the 2018 competition out completely, I am also very pleased this month in Essex Golfer to publish a picture of the Singles Order of Merit winner Maz Iqbal. Some pretty solid performances by Woolston Manors’ Mazhar Iqbal in earlier rounds saw off any other competition. Photo here shows Maz and his well-deserved trophy, at his home club and courtesy of Woolston Jubilee Captain Zulfi Ali. Maz’s only halved match of 7 performances saw him win out to the top spot. Well done Maz! For all clubs please keep tracking our updates: See us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thejubileecup/ Follow us on Twitter: @jubilee_cup The Jubilee Committee are always looking for volunteers to help us out – please contact myself or one of the Committee at the Contact details on our Homepage (top-right) www.jubileecup.com.
