The Future Looks Bright For Crondon Park C
rondon Park is fast becoming one of the premium golf venues in Essex and the South East once again. This year we have seen our very own Jim Lepper retire after 27 years of service as head green keeper. This has allowed us to bring in Stewart Rodgers, formally of Brentwood and Orsett, to modify and continue to bring the course forward. Having only taken full control in October, Stewart has already been able to improve some of the drainage, renovate some teeing areas and increase the speed and playability of the greens with the help and hard work of his team. The membership have never been happier with the efforts of the team. Crondon now boasts a brand new fully stocked
pro shop with PGA professionals available for lessons and custom fitting with the latest equipment and launch monitors under the running of Michael jones, formally of Brentwood and Wanstead. The Academy includes, four practice putting and chipping greens, a 14 bay floodlit driving range, an outdoor grass range, par 3 golf course and 18 hole championship golf course for all to use. The re investment from the owner Stuart Fox shows how seriously Crondon are about leading the way in the county for everything golf related, from practice facilities, to course conditions and membership to pay and play. Crondon is now open for all to experience and enjoy.

BUILD STRONG
I
FOUNDATIONS
see very regularly golfers joining a gym, to improve their golf, and chose exercises that just will not improve their golf! I believe In building strong foundations. Once strong foundations are built you are a much more stable unit in the gym and within your golf game. Always follow functional movements, the following are 6 that I like to use with every client to get the body functioning properly and getting the muscles working as a team. Below are the 6 functional movements and an example exercise for you to try, please look up each exercise on YouTube and make sure you have your technique perfect: PULL 1 arm standing cable row or 1 arm resistance band row. PUSH Push ups – these do not have to be full, you can lower to push ups off the knees.
BEND For a golfer I feel this is essential! The bent over cable or resistance band row I use a lot. LUNGE Walking lunges I am a big fan of.
GAIT My preferred movement here is sprints ... this is an advanced exercise so to lower the movement I would basically recommend walking. Functional movements strengthen the core, improve and strengthen the posture and get the body working together hence building a stronger more stable golf swing.
TWIST My favourite exercise for golf here is all types of wood chop ... reverse wood chop, horizontal wood chop, normal wood chop. - 10 -

he transition of the swing, that moment when the club changes from the backswing and starts to move into the downswing is critical for several reasons path, plane, sequence but today we are continuing with our winter project for more yards, so we are interested in preserving the energy in the golf club into impact. We are able to achieve this by keeping the shaft close to me during the transition and into the downswing. Picture 1 and 2 show this. Here I have stored the energy and kept the loading or tension in the shaft. This will now catch up or release faster through impact magnifying the club head speed, and more speed equals more distance. If you have enjoyed some of my articles why not join me and my colleague Steve Cardy in the sun this spring at the El Rompido Resort in southern Spain 5 to 12 of May 2018, for our Hosted Golf Holiday week with Coaching. The cost of the week is ÂŁ895 (based on two people sharing) includes return airport transfers from

ll in one afternoon! Organised by Ron and Eileen Wilkes with the support of 2017 Captain, Andy Lee this was the second year of the tournament. During a visit to Ron’s Consultant Urologist, Mr Peter Acher, the idea of a golf day to raise awareness as well as funds for Prostate Cancer UK along with Southend Hospitals Urology Department was born. Soon followed, tournament date, entry forms and a wave of support for the cause. A sold out September afternoon was won by Jim Connor, George Carroll, Pater Aves and Bob Page, the silent auction went on into the evening and thanks to kind donations from numerous people including European Tour players, Daniel Brooks and Matthew Southgate the final total was £4550.00! Mr Acher spoke to all the gathered players, raising awareness regarding Prostate Cancer and dispelling a few myths regarding the disease, £2000 of that money was kept in the local community as it was paid to Southend Hospitals Urology Department, the picture shows Ron and Eileen presenting the cheque to Mr Acher and his nurses.

Paul Drives In
A
t the time of year when golf becomes less serious for many but a little more serious for a few, thirty two Five Lakes Golf Club Seniors contested a Mulligan Stableford competition on the Lakes course followed by the ‘Drive-in’ of the new Seniors Captain for 2018, Paul Raymond. In damp cold conditions and with the greens a little
Paul Raymond during his drive-in.
B
unpredictable, having been recently solid tined, most players resorted to using their coveted mulligans on the putting surface where missing the three foot putt was fairly compensated. Despite the challenging conditions, scoring was good with over half the field returning scores of 30 points and better. Tony Horne playing off a handicap of 18, capitalised on his recent good form and returned a defiant total of 37 points that was good enough to take top spot on count back from Tony Tyler and David Barbour. The main results of the competition were: 1st Tony Horne – 37 points on count back, 2nd Tony Tyler – 37 points on count back, 3rd David Barbour – 37 points, 4th Ash Patel – 36 points, 5th Don Fry – 35 points on countback, 6th Barry Turner – 35 points. After the Stableford competition, the new Five Lakes Seniors Captain, Paul Raymond, had a successful drive-in, attended by his fellow competitors one of whom stood to benefit from accurately predicting his drive distance. Paul takes over from last year’s Captain, Mick Phillis.’
Bob Powers In
Trevor and Steven Go Through
ob Powley became the new captain of Maylands Golf Club in November. Bob is only 5'0 but he was presented with a 6'0 driver on his Captains Day Drive-In. Though the swing doesn't look too bad, the ball didn't pass the ladies tee!
T
he wet, autumnal weather saw a large field of Playgolf Colchester members turn out in great course conditions, looking to qualify for the regional Daily Mail foursome’s competition qualifiers. Long-time doubles partners, Trevor Barnett and Stephen Allen, go forward to represent the club after carding an unassailable nett score of 65.5. The consistent pair scored steadily throughout and kept their cool knowing they had a competitive score in hand with the finishing post in sight. Benjamin Garner and Wayne Woods took the runner up spot with a nett score of 67. Adie Binns and Roger Giles took third place with their score of nett 69. - 24 -

his is the 5th year that the Burstead Golf Club have held their Pink Monday raising funds in aid of Breast Cancer Now. It started with 36 ladies and has gone from strength to strength now hosting 120 ladies. It's a fantastic day with everyone wearing something pink, playing an 18 hole team event with lunch after. There are the customary cupcakes and drinks at half time to keep them going. We raised over £2,200 for a really worthy cause and we look forward to holding the same event in 2018.
Winning Team: Clare Jorstad (Burstead G.C), Corrinne Pipe (Thorndon Park G.C), Amanda Dicker (Chelmsford G.C), Angela West (Chelmsford G.C) with Lynne Southgate (Pink Monday) Organiser and Kim Homes (The Burstead Lady Captain). - 26 -

Top Award for Volunteer Squad Manager Wendy Lodder IMAGE © LEADERBOARD PHOTOGRAPHY
Wendy Lodder.
V
olunteer squad manager Wendy Lodder has been honoured with an award at the England Golf coaching conference. Wendy, who suffers from a rare cancer, was hailed as the 2017 Volunteer Manager of the Year, in tribute to her inspirational dedication to her players in the England U18 East region squad. Guests at the awards dinner watched a video of player after player speaking about Wendy’s contribution to their progress. They told of her positive attitude, her encouragement, her welcome, her big smile, her friendship and her belief in them.
E
Squad coach Sarah Bennett said: “Wendy is just incredible. The connection she has with everyone and the respect she has from the players is amazing. She makes everything run so smoothly and has so much desire and commitment for the people who matter, the players.” Wendy, a member at Colchester Golf Club in Essex, was a late starter to golf, achieving a single figure handicap and becoming a Level 1 volunteer coach 10 years ago. She’s been the East Region U18 squad manager for the past two seasons and said of her award: “It’s a great honour to be recognised by England Golf, the East Regional coach Sarah Bennett and my Team East squad. Wendy was recognised alongside two top coaches.Yorkshire’s Steve Robinson, who led the England women’s team to back-to-back European championship wins, was named Coach of the Year 2017 for the second time in succession. It’s the second year in a row he has received this award.
England Golf to Launch Disability Championship in 2019
IMAGE © LEADERBOARD PHOTOGRAPHY
ngland Golf will launch a disability championship for the first time in 2019, as part of its calendar of events. Over the past two years, England Golf has worked with the charity BALASA Golf to shape a national championship and it has now been confirmed that England Golf will take sole responsibility for this event from 2019. This will be the first time that the England Golf championship programme has included a disability event and it underlines the organisation’s commitment to being customer focussed. The championship will offer a competitive opportunity to golfers who are an important part of the game – and their views are being sought to shape the event. Disabled golfers, both club members and non-members,
are invited to complete a short survey about the type of event they would like. Click here to take part in the survey, which will remain open until Monday 15 January 2018. Please email clubsupport@englandgolf.org to receive the survey in an alternative format. Jamie Blair, Disability Manager for England Golf, commented: “This a fantastic step forward and shows our commitment to providing for disabled people at all levels within our game. “Offering an event that will be shaped by disabled golfers will allow us to ensure we provide a great experience and will cement this event within our championship programme.” Disabled persons who would like to get into golf can find out more at www.englandgolf.org/disability or visit www.getintogolf.org/inclusive to find their local club or driving range which offers inclusive activity for disabled people. Lady Captain Linda Graham and Captain Lee Shaw arrived on a side by side tricycle adorned with a poppy to mark Remembrance Sunday and decoration signifying the Club's up and coming 90th anniversary. The Captains were dressed in 1920's golfing attire to also mark the upcoming milestone of the Club's formation in 1928. The whole event was a big success there being a wonderful atmosphere throughout the Club, hopefully just the start of things to come as we enter a special year in our history. - 34 -
GOLF TIPS FOR AROUND THE COURSE As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easy-to-understand. Thanks to the structure with sections from tee to green, golfers can find the information they need in an instant. A quick fix guide for eliminating mistakes makes the practical ring-bound water-repellent booklet the ideal accompaniment on the course. The tips are based on many years of competition experience by leading golf professionals. We’d be willing to bet that “Golf Trouble Shots and Quick Fix Guide” will help you save a number of strokes on your next round.

Izzy Lush has lead the Section from the front this year in more ways than one. A Junior Essex Golfer and having also represented Essex Schools Izzy is a member of the England Golf Junior Panel and she is a member of ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ who have been promoting golf throughout Essex for the past two years. The golf day began with a shotgun start for 19 teams of Juniors, Grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, mums, dads, friends and members. The

Launch Mointor for Putting and a Green That Moves!
H
i fellow Golfers. The weather has now turned Cold and Golf is starting to look maybe not the best pursuit to do. However, those that are thinking of downing the clubs there is ONE that you should definitely not put down i.e. The Putter. To those hardcore crowd that continue to play through Winter please do not neglect this one part of the game either. Why do I say this? Everyone wants to hit the ball further and that's never a problem as it makes holes play shorter, but for those that miss putts inside 5-10 feet that is still a shot in Golf. My belief is this - Could you Putt like a Professional Tour Golfer? My answer is definitely YES! It's the 1 part of the game that does not require power but learning a Skill that will be valuable to you everytime you play. It's the most used Club in the Bag and as Jack Nicklaus quoted ‘No matter your scoring goals, you can attain them faster by improving your PUTTING’. Should we ignore the greatest player to have played Golf or ignore the brilliance of Tiger Woods who scored well, because he could hole Putts? I have recently purchased a Launch Monitor for Putting called ‘Quintic Ball Roll Technology’ and it's the equivalent to a Flightscope which I use or Trackman. It's attention to detail is second to none and gives both Club and Ball data. Alongside my Zen Green Stage which is a hydraulic green that creates break putts and uphill and downhill, is used in the Sky Sports Golf Studio. Currently, I am the only person who coaches - 38 -
Putting using these tools not only in Essex but in The South East of England. As a person who had the Yips at age 14 and had to use a broom handle putter at 17, I have the personal experience to understand any golfer who has Putting problems or seeks to be better, as I have been there. It's not nice and you feel very vulnerable. I can now say after many years of finding answers, that I could own any Putting Surface in the World. I know that's a bold statement but could you honestly say that about yourself and truly mean it? If you do great, but if you don't would you like too? If you would like to see me at my Putting Studio to understand what I call The 360 Strategy either as an individual, in a group or purchase a lesson for a Christmas present, then contact me on my details. Below is a list of dates of group lessons during the next few months limited to 6 people at £60 for the 3 sessions or £25 per session; • Thursdays from 6:30 till 9pm 14th December, 4th January, 8th February • Saturdays from 2:30 till 5pm - 30th December, 20th January, 17th February A little Putting tip for indoor putting. Get 2 balls and place them 1ft apart. Strike 1 onto the other. Then go 2ft and so on! Hope that helps? I wish you all a Great Christmas and a Wonderful 2018! Happy Golfing

TILT DON’T STICK
I
would just like to show you a very simple drill which will help to achieve a more consistent and bodily efficient golf posture. There is a great misconception in golf to stand effectively to the ball the “bottom should stick out” This, in itself is another article but one which I would be grateful if you could remove from your memory banks! Due to the complexity of the bodily movements in the golf swing it is imperative to protect our back allowing us to make a fluid injury free swing guaranteeing longevity in the game. When coaching I use the word “tilt” at address which my clients finds promotes a hinging movement which applied to the hips encourages
a balanced, stable and safe foundation to swing. Try following this routine at home or during your practice sessions. • Standing upright as straight as you can holding the club just on your hip line or place your thumbs on your hip joint • Hinge at the hips with the legs remaining in a straight position • Gently allow your arms to drop vertically downwards in a relaxed tension free position the club can then be held in this position. • Allow a small knee flex This starting position or posture shows a relatively flat lumbar area with definitely no “sticking out of the bottom.” Sarah Bennett

PLEASE TURN OFF THE LIGHT
o, another golfing year comes to pass and it’s time for a look back on the good and the bad of 2017. On the Professional Major front Sergio won The Masters, Brooks Koepka won The US Open, Jordon Speith won The Open and Justin Thomas won The U.S. P.G.A. so overall a decent set of Major Championships. Maybe memorable for the famous Speith drop in The Open which really showed how you can help yourself out whilst still abiding by the letter of the law. On an equipment front drivers seem to jump up in price by quite a bit and a few times the hype hit fever pitch but never fear there will be a new model out in month or so with much better technology so let’s hope the golfing public have deep pockets. In fact, I think all equipment jumped up a bit in price this year a little more than normal. Fitted equipment still seems to be a buzz word among some of the big golf companies, as long as you fit into their standard spec so no real change there. I think 2018 will see more high profile professional players coming away from club contracts and using what they like instead of what they are paid to. When the end of Nike Golf finally came it was interesting to see how many of their players continued to
- 42 -
use their equipment - the answer was there for all to see. As for me I cut down on a lot of companies I offered this year, reason being I wanted to stay away from ‘buzz’ products if I didn’t believe they were worth the hype. Looking back I made the right decision and next year will follow suit with less companies again. I understand that this maybe not for everyone but I can sleep well at night knowing the advice I gave was the truth and not a marketing spiel. Over the years I have always picked and chosen what equipment I offer based on what I can do with it. For example there would be no point in me fitting someone with an iron when I know that the correct lie angle (angle of the head) could not be achieved - I see no point in that as you are fitting the golfer to the club, not the club to the golfer. In my other life running the after sales devisions of four major shaft brands across Europe this continues to get busier and busier and gives me the opportunity to visit some of the best fitters. In a recent seminar I hosted we had 30 of the finest fitters in Europe attend learning about golf shafts and how they interact with a player. Well, that’s about it for 2017, if Essex Golfer will have me I will speak to you in early 2018 so it just leaves me to thank you all for your support and the magazine for putting up with me! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and an excellent 2018. May all your putts run true. LEE

All Change at Stoke by Nayland The new captains – John Wheatley, Alan Line, Elaine Davidson and Max Toombs.
I
n November of each year the Captains at Stoke by Nayland finish their year in charge and the new Captains are elected. The Senior Section was the first one to hold its AGM and this is followed by their drive in, one week later. Norman Davidson, the retiring captain, handed over the reins to John Wheatley as Seniors Captain and Ian Bickers as Vice Captain. It had been a very successful year for Norman, and the Senior members, which included a full programme of inter club matches, monthly competitions as well as summer and winter knock outs. All prize winners were presented with their trophies at the AGM. Multiple winner Graham Vandervord crowned his day with a Hole in One on the 3rd Gainsborough in the Three Captains competition. Norman also announced that he had reached his target of £5000 for his charity which was the Kingswode Hoe School in Colchester. This money will be put towards the school’s science room project. At the Junior AGM it was confirmed Matthew Thompson will be succeeded by Max Toombs as Captain with Harry English his Vice Captain. Again trophies were presented to all the competition winners. At the Club AGM it was announced that the long serving Jonathan Loshak would be retiring from his post as Honorary President and he was presented with a memento by Club Captain Don Wiggins. He was thanked for all his hard work for the club over many years. Don reported on his own very successful year and the fact that he had surpassed his £4000 target raised for Prostate Cancer. Any funds over this target will be spent on the members in the form of coaching clinics. Don also presented all the trophies. A resolution was also passed to include the President in the club constitution and to create a
Men’s Section. This was passed by the meeting and the Men will now hold their own AGM on the 8th December to elect their committee. The new Men’s Captain is Alan Line and his Vice Captain John Sandford. Lesley Garnett is the new President. The next morning saw all the Captains driving in after joining the members for breakfast. Both courses, Gainsborough and Constable, were used for the shotgun competition, with over 160 players taking part.
Beaujolais Brunch
T

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population therefo re any general advertising such as newspa pers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that . We have been advertising in this mag azine for many, many years and not only doe s it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new cus tomers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds whe n considering their next purchase. NE VAD A BOB S, COL CH EST ER

Scott Made No Mistake
cott Farthing made no mistake in winning Colchester Golf Club Gold Club’s Poppy Appeal Stableford on the Braiswick course. Played on Remembrance Sunday, with members respecting the silence at eleven o’clock, any point earned by the 107 entrants was well deserved on such a bitterly cold but sunny day. Indeed from such a large field the clear skies did at least allow the last few groups to finish with some light from the quickening, darkening sky. Eighteen handicapper Farthing’s round was built on his front nine holes where he scored twenty-one points. His back nine was much looser where two none-scoring holes held him back, but the seventeen points he did score was enough to put him ahead of the pursuing group by two clear points. A countback was required to separate the chasing group of four players on thirty-six points. Simon Rippingale (13) was second
from seven handicapper Matt Black, and Caroline Slagel (30) took fourth spot from David Latta (10). Scott Farthing watching his drive closely down the 18th.

wards representing 80 years’ service as trustees were presented when Newton Green Golf Club celebrated its successes over the last year. Four trustees, Ken Mazdon, Alan Vince, Geoff Challacombe and Andy Dodds have relinquished their positions as the members’ club has moved to incorporated status. Directors now take over the responsibilities of the trustees, and chairman Peter Philpott presented inscribed glass bowls to the longserving trustees. In reviewing the year, he said: “Newton Green is in a very strong position, both in respect to its playing standards and facilities. In recent times the club has invested heavily in the course, which has
resulted in a significant increase in visitors. “On top of this, the last few months have seen us ploughing in around £90,000 to completely refurbish the bar and dining areas, as well as transforming the road network with block paving, landscaping and re-organising parking arrangements.” The evening of celebration also included marking the juniors becoming Suffolk team champions for the third year, as well as winning the team award at the county junior stroke play final. They went on to finish sixth out of 30 teams in the national club final. Also during the year the women reached the final of the Suffolk Cranworth Trophy, while Ben Tawell won both the spring and autumn meetings of the East Anglia Golf Managers’ Association, which meant he also retained the organisation’s Dick Ben Tawell. The Mind Zone – Play Your Best Golf Yet!?
ore than 50 keen golfers from various clubs saw The Mind Zone take the 'Play your best golf yet' seminar to the Bentley Golf club on the evening of 20th November. Attendees from juniors, ladies, gents, Captains and club champions were involved in a thoughtprovoking evening, filled with many useful tools and techniques that can be used on the course instantly to increase enjoyment and scores. This popular seminar is a very interactive couple of hours which includes audience participation and stories from the tour and, of course, your own experiences when you play golf. David Tingey, of The Mind Zone said; ‘It's always great to hear the different ideas from the evening that people take-away and look forward to using in their next game. You can see their excitement to get on the course and put it into action’.
their performance and enjoyment. This just demonstrates, regardless of stand-ard, that the Mind Zone seminar is for everyone’ said Gary Boyes, of The Mind Zone. Here are just a few comments following the evening. ■ ‘Really looking forward to putting all of this into practice on the golf course’. ■ ‘I’m excited and looking forward to playing in my next competition’. ■ ‘I’ve always been really interested in how the mind affects my golf; now it makes so much more sense as to how I can use this to increase my enjoyment’. ■ ‘Can’t believe how much more confident I now feel’. ■ ‘Since your session I’ve actually had my best round of golf ’.
Calling all Captains and Professionals of Golf Clubs; why not put on a Mind Zone seminar for your own members and guests? Not only will it improve your members’ golf and enjoyment, it can be an excellent fund-raiser (Captain’s Charity?) along with providing additional revenue for the golf club. Ask us for more details of how a Mind Zone session can work in your club. The results can often be instant. Feedback of a hole-in-one the very next day from one of the attendees, tournament victories, reduced handicaps and perhaps, more importantly, turning frustration into fun on the golf course. ‘What was really noticeable was the crosssection of golfers’ abilities, with many new players, just starting in the game, through to single figure handicap players, all wanting to improve

The 2018 competition sees the greatest number of Essex clubs in the Jubilee Cup - our number reached forty-eight Essex clubs! We very much welcome our new entrants Nazeing and Blakes Golf Clubs, whose members handicapped 12-24 (and above) will benefit from a competition which was lauded at the AGM as “the best in Essexâ€? by competing captains! ESSEX v HAMPSHIRE The Warren Golf Club – Sunday 15th October
T
he final fixture of 2017 for the Essex Colts was the SE final against Hampshire at The Warren on Sunday 15th October. Essex and Hampshire have met in this SE final for the last four consecutive years. One win each and one halved match. All tightly contested games, and this year would turn out to be no exception. A total squad of 15 golfers from eight different clubs have represented Essex during the year. The team on this occasion was: Brandon Meads. Capt (Chelmsford), Ben Horton & Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Jay Beisser (Raleigh), Will Percival & Cassidy Steffens (Orsett) Shay McQueen (Chelmsford) and Josh Cardy (The Warren). The morning foursomes were tightly contested. Two Essex pairs had excellent 5&4 wins – Ben & Lukas and Josh & Cassidy. The morning Foursomes result being 2 – 2. The afternoon singles kept everyone on their toes. The match was well supported by - 53 -

County officials plus many families and friends of the players. By the 6th hole, games 1 and 2 were balancing each other out, with Hampshire being three up in the first and Essex three up in the second. Four of the following five games were all square, the exception being outstanding play from Ben Horton in game six, which eventually gave him a resounding early win of 8&7.
!
Into the back nine and Will Percival had a good 4&3 win and Lukas Warren made an excellent recovery from being 4 down at one point, to win 1 up on the 18th. Essex were now up 3 – 2, and on the 15th Shay, Josh and Cassidy were each all square. One more game required to halve the match, two to win. Shay then won two consecutive holes – 16th & 17th, resulting in a 2&1 win. Essex 4 – 2, could not now lose the match, but could they secure outright victory? Josh, so close, lost a hard fought game 2&1. Essex 4 – 3.Young Cassidy (Orsett), found himself the County Colt’s anchor man. Inter Counties Final
SURREY U14 v ESSEX U14 Chartham Park Golf Course – Sunday 8th October 2017
A
s Northern section league winners the Essex under 14 team played Surrey at Chartham Park Golf Club (Sussex) with teams of 12 playing singles matchplay in handicap order off scratch. With Jesper Laurence back from injury we fielded a strong team as the result will tell, 12 points each and the trophy shared. 18 birdies were shared among the team, first man out Teddy Papple (Stock Brook Manor) holed 4 of them in his emphatic 5&3 win. Other good wins came from Captain Rory Bennet (Hainault Forest) 4&2, and Wilf Elliott (Clacton) 4&3, Wilf holed a bunker shot to win one hole. Lewis Wright (Thorndon Park) lost 1 down despite having 3 birdies, that was the standard of golf being played. Tom Atkinson(Chigwell) also lost 1 down True grit from Will Horne, dormie 2 down he managed to win the 17th with a par, then going up 18 with the light fading Will’s shot onto the green went over the pin and spun back to 8 feet, he then promptly sunk the putt to win the hole, his match ending all square. Out at 8, Tom Vass (Five Lakes) had a 2&1 win to put us up in the match. Liam Evans (Thorpe Hall) then halved his match to retain our slender lead. However Adam Crawley (Stock Brook Manor) and Max Toombs (Stoke by Nayland) could not quite match the excellent golf of their opponents, and Surrey looked favourites to win the trophy. So the fate of the Essex team was in the hands of our last player out on the course, Will Halleybone (Abridge). Coming up the last with all players and supporters from both teams cheering every shot Will could barely be seen and only recognised by his huge mop of hair, his approach from 150 yards out, dropped over the pin with backspin this time 6 feet, from where he calmly rolled in his putt to win 1up, well done Will. Final result won 5 lost 5 and 2 halved.

2017 ESSEX GOLF UNION ANNUAL DINNER
T
he 2017 Dinner was held on Saturday 18th November at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club. Essex Golf Union President, Roger Walmsley, welcomed 140 guests and members of Clubs from around the County to a four course dinner, followed by presentations to Clubs that won the major team knockout trophies during the year, and a couple of special individual presentations. Those attending were then cordially entertained by Ian Irving, guest speaker for the evening. Roger was joined on the top table by Mike Rees, President of England Golf South East Group, and a number of fellow Presidents from counties bordering Essex and from around the south east of England. During Roger’s speech he announced the 2017 Essex player of the year award, which this year was presented to Mark Stones (Boyce Hill). Mark has been a key member of the Essex Seniors

team for the last few years, the team being undefeated in their 2017 league fixtures, retaining their South-East Foursomes title, and Mark also represented England Seniors in the 2017 home internationals and Seniors European Championships. The dinner also provided the opportunity for the County to acknowledge the achievement of Todd Clements (Braintree), who in August won the English Amateur Championship at The Berkshire Club. Todd received a standing ovation from all those attending as he was represented with the English Amateur Trophy by Roger Walmsley.

TODD CLEMENTS ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPION
I
n August this year Todd Clements became only the third Essex golfer to win the English Men’s Amateur Championship, joining Sir Michael Bonallack and Craig Laurence as the only other two previous winners. Todd, who lives in Ongar, started playing golf at the age of 12 at Colne Valley GC. By the time he was 17 he had moved to Braintree Golf Club and was playing off a scratch handicap, and having played for the Essex U16 and U18 teams, he made his debut for the Essex men’s team. He is now 21 and playing off a handicap of plus 4. This improvement in his golf Todd attributes to many factors, hard work on his game and general fitness, along with a new coach, Zane Scotland of Reigate Hill GC in Surrey, whom he met in the middle east a few years ago whilst playing golf there. Prior to his win in August Todd claims the highlights of his playing career have been winning the Essex foursomes twice with two different partners, and Captaining his Braintree Youth Shield team to victory in 2014. The English Amateur Championship was played at The Berkshire GC near Ascot, and started with a 36 hole stroke play competition; the top 64 players going into a Knockout phase. Todd qualified in 3rd place on 9 under par. He then played 6 rounds of match play over the next 3 days, winning 3 of the first 5 rounds by the narrowest of margins, 1 up. In the final, Todd played against Jack Gaunt from Staffordshire and after a “rollercoaster affair” finished the winner by 2 & 1, and became the 2017 English Amateur Champion. Holing the Since then Todd has played for the England men’s Winning Putt. team in the home international matches. Of the 6 - 57 -

matches played, Todd won 2, halved 3 and lost 1 helping the team to second place, narrowly losing out to the Irish team by half a point. He hopes to turn professional in the next couple of years and we wish him every success in his future ventures. He is pictured with the English Amateur Championship Trophy after it was again presented to him at the EGU annual dinner by the president of the Essex Golf Union, Roger Walmsley. An insight into the thoughts of the English Amateur Champion: Q. What are your three favourite courses? A. Old Course at St Andrews, West Course at Wentworth, and Hindhead. Q. Who were your inspirations in golf? A. Tiger Woods and Luke Donald. Tiger being the best golfer I believe has ever lived and Luke Donald for his amazing short game. Q. If you turned Pro and made it into the Ryder Cup team, who would you most like to partner in the Foursomes? A. From current tour Pro’s, Henrik Stenson, because I’d always be on a fairway or green. From my own peer group, I’d say Dan Brown, a good friend and Home Internationals partner from Yorkshire. Q. What are your plans for 2018? A. I am remaining Amateur for 2018, playing 50% Pro 50% amateur events. Off the back of my Mena Tour results, winning the amateur ranks again in 2017, Dubai World have invited me to play in the Dubai Desert Classic in 2018. Due to my OWGR (Official World Golf Ranking) I should get a start at Final Qualifying for The Open, it would be nice to make it to Carnoustie. Q. What other sports do you enjoy? A. I played football competitively until the age of 17 when I decided to take my golf a little more seriously. I have taken a recent interest in long distance running and hope to run marathons in the future. Endurance running and Triathlons are also on my list, this will inevitably help me with my fitness and as a result my golf. Favourite Football Team is Arsenal. I also enjoy watching Tennis and F1. Q. If you could choose three others to make a fourball who would you choose and why? A. Tiger Woods for a start, the greatest golfer that ever lived, I’m sure I could learn a lot from him in just one round of golf. Roger Federer next as I look up to him as an outstanding sportsman that has lasted the test of time in a sport that has a relatively low career span compared to golf. Finally, Jimmy Bullard, purely for the Comedy factor, he would ensure we would all enjoy the round, what a character! - 58 -

Spanish Pro-Am Levermore Triumphs at El Rompido
Jason Levermore.
A
fter visiting France and Belgium for many years the Essex PGA ventured further afield for this year’s Overseas Pro-Am in search of warm weather. The El Rompido resort in Southern Spain was the destination and the Professionals and their amateur teams were rewarded with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 20s centigrade. The Pro-Am was played over 3 rounds, with two at the El Rompido resort and the middle round at La Monacilla just along the coast. After the first round on the North course at El Rompido, James Scade from Little Channels was leading by 2 shots from his colleague at Little Channels, Jason Levermore. David Wood from Orsett Golf Club was in third place one shot further back. On day 2, Levermore made his move with a strong 3 under par round of 69 which was 3 shots better than anyone else on the day including Scade and Roger Gray from Thorndon Park both shooting level par 72. And so, to the final day at the South course at El Rompido and Levermore had a 1 shot lead over Scade. First to make a move
was Mitch Kierstenson who produced a best of the day 68 in difficult conditions to move him into 3rd place. A bogey at the first hole was followed by 4 birdies for Levermore to set a three-day target of 209, 7 under par. This left his Little Channels colleague needing to find several birdies to take the top prize. Scade duly produced 5 birdies but sadly 2 double bogies saw him finish 3 shots back at 4 under par. In the team event of the Pro-Am, the lead changed hands every day, the first round saw the team with Phil Wesley from Langdon Hills produce a great score of 85 points but that was their only time in the lead. After day 2 the team with Mark Talbott moved into the lead with a fine score of 89 points and with one round to go there were several teams in with a chance of winning. A great score of 85 points from Professional Luke Fraser of Thorndon Park and amateurs Budge Dheir, Mark Dodd and Les Bernard, was enough to take the honours by 2 points from another team from Thorndon Park, ably assisted by Professional Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall.

Rochford Hundred Golf Club 7 Birdies and a Hole in One for Coles I
t was a case of ‘déjà vu’ for Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club when he won the Essex Professional event at Rochford Golf Club with a 9 under score of 62. Two years ago, he won the same event with a similar score, the difference this time was that the score included a hole in one at the par 3 15th hole. It has been an amazing few weeks for Coles with a win as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team over the United States, followed by victory in the PGA play-offs at Walton Heath. Runner-up was Mason Papple from Stock Brook Manor in his first event as a Professional with Essex scoring a very creditable 66; joint third place was shared by Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club and Lloyd Kennedy from Woolston Manor one shot further back.
Braintree Golf Club 6-way Tie at Braintree
O
n a perfect day for scoring at Braintree Golf Club, there was a six-way tie for first place and there was only one shot between the first nine places. Gary Carter from Five Lakes, Jack Winer from Abridge, Scott Hudson from The Warren, Andy Pestell from Chelmsford, James Scade from Little Channels and Steve Cipa from South Essex shared the first-place prize money. Sharing 7th
place and a solitary point in the Porsche Order of Merit were Jason Levermore and Craig Housden both from Little Channels and Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall. The most commendable performance amongst the joint winners was Scott Hudson who was 4 over par after his first 6 holes and played the final 12 holes in 7 under par.
