SOPHIE WINS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TITLE FOR ESSEX IMAGE COPYRIGHT LEADERBOARD PHOTOGRAPHY.

ssex teenager Sophie Wheeler has just won her second national title with a two shot victory in the England Girls’ County Champion of Champions tournament. The 16-year-old became Essex girls’ champion for the first time earlier this season and capitalised on it today. She went round the Green course at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire, in one-over par for 36 holes and commented: “This means a lot, especially as my dad caddied for me.” Wheeler, from Thorndon Park Golf Club near Brentwood, adds this to her win in the 2015 Abraham Trophy, when she claimed the title of England’s most improved girl golfer. “This feels really good,” she said. “I haven’t been playing my best recently and it was nice to come and play well and for everything to go right.” She’s been practising hard to get her game in shape and she made sure she was well prepared for today’s competition. “I played well in practice and I mapped out where I needed to be and
where not to miss,” said Wheeler. Her efforts were rewarded by good ball striking, good putting and very steady scoring. She birdied the last two holes of the morning round for level par 70 and a two-shot lead over Shropshire’s Sophie Johnson (Enville). The margin between the two girls stayed the same in the afternoon with Johnson taking the runners-up spot on three-over par. Tied third on seven over were Cheshire’s Lucy Jamieson (Heswall) and Cumbria’s Abby Roper (Seascale). Wheeler, who was playing off four, is looking forward to a handicap cut after today’s rounds. Her success may also inspire other girl golfers, for Wheeler has long been involved with Girls Golf Rocks, the recruitment campaign run by England Golf and the Golf Foundation. She was one of the original Ambassadors when the scheme was first launched in Essex. She was closely involved for over two years, showing other girls that golf is a fun and friendly sport, and she continues to promote the game and encourage girls to play. -8-

GOSFIELD LAKE GOLF CLUB 30TH ANNIVERSARY
A
chance meeting at York University 50 years ago resulted in the 30th Anniversary of Gosfield Lake Golf Club in August this year. Ralph Rowe met Michael O’Shea and visited the O’Shea house located at Home Farm, Gosfield Hall Park in Essex. The natural beauty of the area, close to Gosfield Hall and Gosfield Lake made a big impression on Rowe who was raised in the industrial North East of England. After graduating O’Shea returned to local Government at Braintree and Rowe took up employment in London. The close friendship as under graduates continued for the next twenty years despite Rowe also working overseas in the Middle East & Far East. In 1985 Rowe married long term partner Maggy and O’Shea was the best Man, after the wedding celebrations Rowe asked O’Shea and his brother Tony to look for a large Country House with about 200 acres, coincidentally the Manor House, Gosfield Lake and 400 acres of land was currently for sale. Fast forward a couple of years, the land was purchased, planning permission obtained, a golf course construction company headed by Howard Swan was contracted, Sir Henry Cotton retained to oversee the design and in August 1988 golfers were playing on an 18 hole championship course together with a 9 hole executive course. The key people then are still there, Rowe remains the Proprietor, Tony O’Shea is the Secretary/Manager
and Michael O’Shea is the Club Chairman/VicePresident. To commemorate their 30 th Anniversary Gosfield Lake Golf Club held a nostalgic competition and 96 club members in 24 teams took part with some excellent golf played. All competitors were drawn in four ball teams by the Captain Graham Hurrell, players with 30 years of membership played with recent members who joined 30 days ago. Remarkably 36 of the 96 participants joined in the first year of the Club The format was a Stableford with the best 3 players from four on each hole scoring and the highest combined total winning the event. The winning team with128 points were Paul Knight, Jonathan Dixon-Smith, David Gould & Carole Robinson closely followed by the second team on count back with 125 points of Alan Furness, Richard Murden, Chris Munt & Peter Prince. In third place also on 125 points was Derek Pryke, Glyn Robinson, Les Turner & Rosemary Bollen. The best individual score was won by Bob Darkins with a magnificent total of 45 points. Club Captain Hurrell presented the prizes and was joined on the day by Club President James Robinson, past Presidents Roy Cottrell & Pat Stephenson. Also present was Founder member Mick Leggett who organised the first Sir Henry Cotton Bursary Day in June 1989 when Peter Alliss officially opened the club.

The award which acknowledges quality in the hospitality, tourism and leisure businesses is something that is synonymous with high standards and excellent customer service. The Quality in Tourism Awards are based on a core set of service-oriented standards, all areas of the business are assessed and accolades are given as part of the star rating assessment where customer service levels are exceptional. Ufford Park’s scores in the areas of service, quality, hospitality and food service had considerably increased for 2018
resulting in the silver award and the highly respected Breakfast award. Deborah Heather, Director of Quality in Tourism comments; “As well as the considerable investment it has made with its continuing refurbishment programme, Ufford Park has shown great vision by investing in ensuring its staff have grown alongside the improvements it has made to the hotel Commenting on the award Managing Director, Robertson stated, “When I took over as Managing Director in 2015, my vision for Ufford Park was that it would become renowned locally for its commitment to excellent customer service and we consistently strive to deliver the highest quality service at every customer touchpoint – ultimately I suppose to ‘exceed the guest’s expectations’. Always try to land the ball on the green F
or consistent short game results always try to land the ball on the green. I so often see players trying to run the ball through the fairway with very mixed results. When you are selecting your approach club be aware of how much green you have to work with. In Picture 1 you can see not much at all. So here I would select a lofted club a gap wedge or even a sand iron. In Picture 2 I have plenty of green to work with, in this instance I may choose a less lofted clubs maybe a 7 or 8 iron.
1
In both instances I am going to land the ball onto the green at about the same spot denoted by the towel in Picture 3. The less lofted clubs will make the ball run further up the green and more lofted less roll. But by landing the ball onto the green it will give me the most consistent first bounce with better results. Why not join me at one of my coaching holidays in Portugal this spring details are on garypikegolf.com

The new 1066 Adventure Golf, which is basically crazy golf, but bigger and better is based on the motte and bailey Norman castles of 1066, such as Stansted Mountfitchet castle. It has many similar features such as a castle keep, a turret house, a water wheel and also a full sized Norman long ship. It makes a great night out for stag and hen do’s, parties or just a night out with friends and can include your own personal host to meet all your needs. You just have to try this great place, where you could be entertained all day as well having breakfast lunch and dinner, with free parking and friendly helpful staff. - 20 -

ALAN PUTTS IN he annual Presidents Putter Competition at Playgolf Colchester saw a good turn out T with the recent rain and growth really showing off the course in superb form. The recently treated greens were fast and true, setting up a great weekend of action with Tee’s pulled back and difficult pin positions set. The Presidents Putter competition run as a Medal with lowest gross, nett scores and the person recording the fewest putts winning a putter, presented by Club President, Len Cole.
WILL WINS THE SENIORS TITLE Senior Champion Will Elder (left) presented with his prize by Senior Captain, Steve Dale (right).
he annual Senior Championship at Playgolf Colchester was well supported, with players T playing for gross and nett prizes. With the tees set as far back as possible, it was a much more testing course for some of the players. However, to find the best golfer, the course should be as testing as possible. Excitement was running high in the club house as players continued to come in and post their scores. With the halfway hut providing an excellent array of food and drink (thanks to lady members and wives). The live scoreboard showed the front runners. One of the early leaders to come in was Geoff Backhouse with an 86 gross, with seven pars and one birdie it was the five double bogies that let him down, eventually finishing third in the competition. Steve Loran posted the next best score with 84 gross, carding four pars and a birdie, in second place. Will Elder took the title of Champion with an excellent score of 78 gross. Elder recorded a birdie, eight pars and nine single bogies to become a worthy winner. The Nett Trophy was won on countback by this year’s vice-captain Stephen Peeling with his 73 nett, beating off Barry Dayman with a better back nine score. John Eade took third spot with a 74 nett.
Alan Pearman - Presidents Putter competition Winner.
Alan Pearman (24) won the nett competition, keeping his good run of form going, carding a superb nett 66 to beat Tim Baiey (22) by two, with his nett 68. Pearman carded highlights of five pars to win, with Bailey carding four pars. Tomas Gale (7) took third place, carding the lowest gross with his level par gross 77, nett 70. Gale finished one shot ahead of Graham Adye (15) in fourth place, who missed out on the podium places, but took the main prize, carding only 28 stokes with his putter, to win the Presidents Putter.
CLUB CAPTAIN AND PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE allards Gore Golf Club held the Captain and Pro Challenge last month. Proceeds B from this match went to Darren Knights charity which is Fair Havens Hospice. 32 men took part in the competition which was a great success .There was nearest the pin prizes and a sleeve of ball for players who were able to beat the Captain and pro with 39 points which six pairs were able. The winners with 43pts were: 1st Fred Brand and Martin Cork – 43 pts. 2nd Kevin Scanlan and Andy Searles – 43 pts. - 22 -

ESSEX PAIR ARE CROWNED PING WOMEN’S FOURBALL CHAMPIONS IMAGE COPYRIGHT LEADERBOARD PHOTOGRAPHY.
Pauline Nash (left) and Linda Woods of Royal Epping Forest Golf Club, the 2018 PING women's fourball betterball champions.
E
ssex golfers Linda Woods and Pauline Nash put the sparkle on their club’s 130th anniversary celebrations when they became PING women’s fourball betterball champions today. The pair, from Royal Epping Forest, snatched victory on countback in the Grand Final after they scored 46 points at PING’s Gainsborough Golf Club. The clincher was the 17th, where Pauline chipped in for a par five and Linda promptly followed her, chipping in for birdie four and four points. “We were quite ecstatic, it made the difference,” said Linda. It took a lot to separate them from their title challengers, Donna Canning and Kathy Seal of Beedles Lake, Leicestershire. Both pairs had 25 points on the outward half and 21 on the inward; but over the last six holes, Linda and Pauline had an advantage of one point. The tournament is run by England Golf and the winners came through an initial entry of over 15,000 women from more than 850 clubs. The top 50 pairs nationwide qualified for today’s
Grand Final and the next 50 played in yesterday’s Plate Final. “We are tickled pink,” said Linda, who is the Royal Epping Forest ladies’ captain for the third time. “We are the oldest club in Essex and it’s our 130th anniversary this year, which is great. “We’ve got quite a small ladies’ section, with currently just 22 ladies playing, so we are absolutely delighted to be able to field a pair and win at national level. It is fantastic.” Linda, who plays off 14, and Pauline, a 19handicapper, play together regularly but they’ve never before won anything as a pair. “We supported each other well and we had a fantastic front nine, we parred eight holes on the front. We dropped off a bit on the back, when it was getting a bit tense, but we managed to hold it together.” The victory was extra sweet for Pauline who is just getting back into golf after having both her hips replaced. “I’m really, really thrilled. It’s just such a wonderful day and we were happy with that – but to come in with a good score and win! We’re thrilled to bits.” - 26 -

CONGRATULATIONS TO COLCHESTER
C
olchester Golf Club progressed to the final of the Curry Cup after a convincing win against Three Rivers. The semi-final was played at Colne Valley, the organisers of the competition, and provided closely fought golf for most of the day. After the morning foursomes it was all square three matches each. The first three matches in the twelve singles games went Colchester’s way.
But the spring was taken out of team captain Iain Cruickshank’s step when the next three were won by Three Rivers. It soon became apparent that the balance of the matches out on the course were all Colchester’s and the final score of 11½ to 6½ gave Colchester a comfortable win. The final is played at Benton Hall in a weird twist of fate, against Benton Hall.
DEJA VU FOR WHITNELL
I
t was a “Ground Hog Day” for Dale Whitnell Forester Park Golf Club as he repeated his 2016 win at Hamptworth with the same score of 10 under par, albeit this time, by way of a playoff against Callum Davidson. It was Davidson who led the way after day one, with a solid 5 under par 65 but that only put him one shot ahead of the eventual winner Whitnell. A whole raft of experienced players were also in close proximity and Davidson would have to be on his metal to keep them at bay on the second and final day. On the second day, players tend to play with more freedom and score better, Paul Kinnear was one who found some welcome form and carded a 6 under par 65 to put him in the clubhouse lead on 7 under par but it was to be too little, too late for the Liverpudlian. Last weeks winner, Michael Farrier-Twist, continued his fine run with a flawless, best of the day 7 under par 64, which saw him leapfrog Kinnear and set a new target of 9 under par for the leaders to aim at. In the final group of the day it was Whitnell and Davidson who were having a battle and it looked as though Whitnell was heading for an easy run in for the title, getting to 9 under par
after 12 holes and leading Davidson by 3 shots. That was until Davidson hit him with 4 birdies in a row from the fourteenth to join Whitnell on 10 under par with one hole to play, which they both parred and so it was off to a play-off to decide the winner, which Witnell won at the first extra hole. This win gave Whitnell his second victory of the 2018 season and put him into a Tie with Michael Farrier-Twist for the free entries on the Portugal Pro Golf Tour, for the 2018/2019 Season.

d e e p S FORGET & THINK Sweet S
trange title? Well, put it this way … if I had a pound for every golfer who said “if I could just hit it a bit further I would be a better golfer” then I would be a rich man. Truth is that yes it would probably be a bit easier if you could hit the ball a little further but the reality is that the odds are stacked against you in doing so. As we get older the ability to increase club head speed (how fast we move the head of the club) decreases, so, in most cases, golfers are stuck with the speed they have. Problem is that most golfers try to swing the club faster to increase distance and it all goes horribly wrong. Think of a golf swing as a chain of events, like a sequence of swing movements that need to happen in the right order to ‘get back to the ball’. If all of a sudden you decide to speed everything up all you are really doing is playing around with the timing of your chain of events which generally ends up in disaster. Swinging faster is not the key – a 3 miles per hour increase in club speed for most golfers would be huge, problem is (all things being equal) this would only make the ball go about 8 yards further. All that time screwing yourself into the mat for 8 yards? I like to think of things logically and if you take this approach it boils down to how fast the ball leaves the club. A golf ball that leaves the face travelling at 100 miles per hour is travelling at 100 miles per hour ... irrespective of what club is used. Unfortunately, the golf ball is not an educated object and is unable to determine what - 30 -
club hit it and add a few extra yards because of it. So with this in mind it comes down to how well the ball is struck, not the golfer trying to create a blur on the mat. I watched the Tour Championship the weekend, Tiger won it (that’s another story) but there was a very interesting aspect that may have gone unnoticed for some of you. I would say that Dustin Johnson and Rory McIIroy hit the ball ‘similar’ distances from the tee – there may be a few yards difference but they are both generally seen as the longer hitters on Tour. Big difference is that Johnson has become an unbelievable wedge player but he is known for his distance? Rory’s wedge play fell well short of what was needed and the rest is history. It’s like Johnson looked at his game and said to himself “Ok, I hit the ball a long way, that means I had better get good with my wedges” – simple really – the outcome? World Number One. So, my advice is this – rather than spending time worrying about how far you hit the ball become a better wedge player, I doubt you will become World Number One but you will definitely lower your score.

LEVERMORE TAKES ORDER OF MERIT CROWN LITTLE CHANNELS PROFESSIONAL FINISHES TOP FOR THE FIFTH TIME
J
ason Levermore (Little Channels Golf Centre) confirmed he is the star of the East by landing the regional Order of Merit crown for the fifth time in his career. Levermore sealed his place at the summit for 2018 by finishing tied-third in the seasonconcluding KJW Millbrook Masters.
London Open and then added a trio of top-three finishes, including a play-off defeat in the East Region Championship. The only time he came outside the top-three was in the Ingrebourne Links Championship at which he was tied-seventh. In finishing top of the pile Levermore qualifies for the PGA Play-Offs at Antalya in Turkey from November 21-23. He will be joined at the prestigious end-ofseason showdown by Rob Coles (Maylands Golf & Country Club) and Jack Winer (Abridge Golf & Country Club), who were second and third on the East region’s Order of Merit. Levermore, 39, said: “All I was interested in was making sure I get to Turkey – to finish top of the Order of Merit is a nice little bonus. “I’ve been real steady this year – nothing really special, but I haven’t done a lot wrong. “I can’t wait for Turkey to be honest. I’ll just try and put in a decent performance at the Play-Offs. “I was second there in 2014, which got me into the 2015 PGA Cup team. “So that is my goal – to hopefully finish in the top-three and get in the GB and I team for Texas next year.” Levermore first won the Order of Merit in 2004 and added further titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
It was the latest in a series of ultra-consistent displays in the five events that contribute to the overall rankings. Levermore opened up with a victory in the
FAMILY AFFAIR AT COLCHESTER GOLF CLUB
T
he Scene was set for the Colchester Golf Club 2018 Championship. With a spectacular morning round of three under par 67 Dan Nicholls was setting the pace. Max Maynard was the only other golfer in this limited field of 50 players to breaking par with a 69. Others in the frame after the morning’s round were Richard Withnall and Joe Williams both returning 71s with Jason Nicholls hovering closeby with a 72. The afternoon provided tougher scoring with nobody breaking par, but positive moves by John Logan (75+73=148) securing fifth and 73s from Roger Wright and John Blackmore (77+73=150) to take joint sixth overall, along with Nathan Howe and Joe Williams. James Angel tied up joint third place with two solid rounds of 73+74=147 along with Maynard, who fell away in the afternoon with a 78.
Second placed Jason Nicholls put in two good rounds of 72 to return an impressive 144 total. However following on from his morning round Nicholls had the championship to loose. Which he didn’t, despite a triple bogey on the 15th, his afternoon round of 75 was enough to lead the field by two clear shots and claim family bragging rights for at least the next 12 months.

THE GREATEST COMEBACK EVER?
ell that is certainly a matter of opinion. Never the less Tiger Woods victory at The W Tour Championship at Eat Lake, Atlanta, was incredibly impressive, whether a Tiger fan or not. We’ve lost count how many different golf swings Tiger has built and rebuilt in his career, 3 or 4 at least which could make him, possibly, the greatest ‘learner’ in the history of the game. However, Tiger’s strongest asset was always his incredible self belief in his mind and ability. With ‘situations’ in his personal life and a body that kept breaking down with multiple knee and back surgeries, Tiger's mental state was taken to a new place. So, with back fusion resulting in another new swing, could he regain the mental strength that had seen him win 79 PGA tour events, 14 of them Majors. With this victory, the answer is a categorical YES! We can imagine a return to World no.1 is on his radar, adding to his Major haul too. Although maybe a little extreme, it's a great example of how we can ‘comeback’ to be successful again. Remember, success is ‘personal’ what is success to you (a topic we discuss at Mind Zone workshops). At The Mind Zone we have worked with golfers of all ages and abilities to recover from a ‘crisis of confidence’. Not just loss of form but returns from injury, operations, even strokes and of course ‘confidence loss’. We can help you to improve your game in an area you possibly, and very likely, haven’t worked on before. Simply contact us direct or via our website
It’s been another successful month for The Mind Zone with more team and individual performances resulting in Silverware. A special congratulations to Shay McQueen of Chelmsford Golf Club for a great victory in the Upminster Trophies winning by a 7 shot margin at -6. Look out for more from The Mind Zone through The Essex Golfer magazine, our website and social media to find out where the next Mind Zone workshop is being held, or simply contact us should you wish to organise a workshop at your own club or society.

TEE IT HIGH & LET IT FLY Sarah coaches at both Three Rivers Golf & Country Club & Stockbrook Manor Golf Club.
his is one question which is a frequent one “Which tee should I use for my driver?” I am T asked this by golfers both new to the game and the
more established players. Here is an image of just a few varying heights of tee pegs which can be used with woods so what are we looking to achieve? The huge technological advancements of the drivers with deep faces require a much higher teed ball than previous years. It is important to understand and to use the correct height of tee peg to help with the consistency of your tee shots. The goal is to achieve the most ideal launch angle and

strike from the centre of the clubface all equating to maximum distance. The height of the tee peg used may well vary due to the ground conditions but the rule “Half the golf ball to be above the crown (top edge of the driver) is a rough guideline. Incidentally when using a 3 wood the rule is the same. When coaching I have a good idea of the areas a client may struggle simply by watching the height they initially tee the ball with various clubs. The more established golfer may well adjust the teed ball height to suit the weather conditions and even the state of the ground. Next time you work on your tee shots at the range experiment and find the most consistent height for you and Sarah Bennett let it fly!

The students are also looking forward to an international trip in February, with a warm weather training camp to the Pestana Golf Resort in Portugal. The students currently enjoy 2 hours per week of PGA coaching, personalised strength and conditioning programmes, nutritional advise, trips to tour events and PUMA logo clothing. This is combined with continuing their education within our Ofsted rated ‘Good’ college by completing a Btec National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science- all of which is fully-funded. Course leader and PGA professional Aaron Quinn says, ‘I believe we are beginning to fulfil our mission of filling the void between the ages of 16-19 for young talented Essex Golfers by offering a bespoke and fully-funded golf and education programme. On completion of the programme the students will have the qualifications and experience necessary to progress onto their next step, this may be as fulltime touring player, PGA professional, University student or American college scholar.’ If you are interested in finding more out about the SEC Golf Academy contact aaron.quinn@southessex.ac.uk.You can also follow their journey on Facebook: @SECGolfAcademy. - 38 -

LETAS FINAL AT STOKE BY NAYLAND anon de Roey ended a three-year quest for her first tournament victory as a professional M by winning the 6th WPGA International Challenge to be held at Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa on Saturday. But in doing so, the 26-year-old from Belgium had to survive a searching examination from Lydia Hall, the defending champion. All of which resulted in the two engaging in an enthralling duel in the Suffolk sunshine in front of a good crowd who had followed this close match. Hall had won the tournament at the same venue 12 months beforehand by prevailing in a sudden death play-off against Ines Lescudier of France. So there was an unmistakeable sense of déjà vu after Hall birdied the par-three 18th on the Gainsborough course to tie the 54-hole scores at 11-under. Back up the 18th they went but this time there was to be no happy ending for the 30-year-old from Wales. The confidence she displayed in sinking the putt that forced the play-off seemed to evaporate as she missed a much shorter one for par. De Roey, by contrast, held her nerve to hole
from a metre and claim the €5,600 first prize and, more importantly, that hitherto elusive first tournament triumph. “I was a little nervous over the last two holes,” she said. “I was actually less nervous on the playoff hole than I had been on the last actual holes. “I just had to play my own game – I was bogeyfree which was good. “I’ve been playing well for the past couple of weeks so it was just a matter of it coming all together and this week it did. “Lydia made me work for it, which is how it should be. It was a great match.” The family-owned Stoke by Nayland resort was the only UK venue on the LETAS schedule this year, and is a firm favourite with the 100 or so women professionals from all over the globe who enjoy staying in both the 4 star hotel and the self-catered luxury lodges on site. The tournament attracted many spectators from the area who saw it featured on BBC Look East last week and in the local press. Leading scores: M De Roey (Belgium) 205 (11)*, L Hall (Wales) 205 (-11); F Johnson (England) 208 (-8); E Nilsson (Sweden) 210 (-6). *Won in a play-off

THORPE HALL WELCOMES BACK RICHIE t the end of August, members of Thorpe Hall Golf Club gathered to welcome and A congratulate one of its favourite sons, Richard McEvoy on his historic win on the European Tour at the Porsche European Open. Nearly two hundred of his fellow club members cheered and applauded as his friend, and club professional, John Fryatt told stories from when he first met Richie, who joined the club as a junior member some twenty five years ago and still supports it in so many ways today . One such story concerned the Howe Cup, an adult and junior greensomes competition played annually at Thorpe Hall. John drew everyones attention to the winner in 1999, one R. McEvoy and then he pointed out the winner in 2017, was Richards eight year old son Ollie! To loud cheers John presented father and son to the crowd. Richie thanked all the members for their support and encouragement throughout his professional career and also his wife and family, from whom he has to spend so much time away from whilst playing in events across the world. Richie explained that the life of a tour professional was at times like a roller coaster, but
now having gained his full tour card for the next two years he was working hard to push on and consolidate his career in a profession that he loves. Richie is now the only player to win a Challenge Tour event followed by a European Tour event in successive weeks. Richie posed for a photograph with his family behind a table proudly displaying the trophies he had won over the past month, the European Open and the Vaudreuil Golf Challenge Trophy and not forgetting Ollie’s own contribution to the display the Howe Cup! His fellow tour player, Matt Southgate, another former member of Thorpe Hall’s Junior Section, was there to lend his support for Richie’s big day, before both set off to resume their attempts to qualify for the season ending Race to Dubai finals.

HAVE YOU GOT TREASURE BURIED AT HOME? ust recently a certain Tiger Woods introduced an old putter back into the bag and since J then, has shot a 62 and then Won The Fed Ex Tour Championship at East Lake. This Putter he started using 19 years ago and he left it in his garage. Also, earlier in the year, The Putter that got hot to create The Miracle at Medinah in The 2012 Ryder Cup as used by Ian Poulter, was brought out of hiding and he subsequently Won his 1st PGA Tour event. The question I am going to ask you all is this. Have you got an Old favourite at home that you don’t use, but you fell out of love with because of results? Most people will say yes. The thing is, this Putter could be the Putter to be using, but you leave it neglected gathering dust and then go, ‘My putting isn’t good I am going to get myself a new 1’. A new Putter could be the answer, but you cannot buy a putting game based on a Putter. It takes an understanding and a complete strategy. Money should be in my opinion spent on improving your putting strategy.
Calling all ESSEX CLUB CAPTAINS
NEEDS YOU!
During the past year, golfers have been seeing me, bringing varying Putters on my Quintic Ball Roll Launch Monitor. Most of them are finding that what was an old favourite, is indeed the better putter for them. They may need some tweaks with either a new grip or indeed would you believe a new shaft. This I will come to on another edition in Essex Golfer. The important thing is, this buried treasure is saving money and hopefully rekindling a romance with an old friend that was once great and brings back the old memories. If you would like to see me just to test out your Putters and be able to see how they are performing or you would like to improve and understand a total strategy to Putting, including use of The Zen Green Stage as seen at The Open, Ryder Cup and on Sky Sports, then please give me a call, email, Facebook or Twitter to book. Special Winter Offer of £80 for the 1st 2 hours. Also, with this offer book 2 hours on The Zen Green Stage, which can be used by upto 4 people.
We would like to hear from you with the news, results and charity days at your club. If you would like your club to feature in the future issues of Essex Golfer please send words and pictures to info@essexgolfer.com or call us on 01621 815 577 - 42 -

he last competition of the season for the Society of Essex Lady Captains, the Autumn T Meeting, took place at Benton Hall Golf Club with 56 members playing on the day. It was hot and sunny, though there was some wind to contend with. The course at Benton Hall looked stunning and the greens were in brilliant condition. With the dry weather the ball was rolling and in total 10 pairs, in the 4BBB competition off full handicap, finished with 40 points or more on the challenging championship course. Our thanks to Benton Hall for hosting this event and to all the staff on the day. Thanks also to Hilary Adams host Lady Captain for her help with preparations and on the day, her large band of past Lady Captains on the course helping the competitors to get round in good time and Sue Ward, Competition Secretary, for taking charge of the results, no easy task where the
majority of the prizes are decided on count back. The top 3 pairs all finished with 43 points. 3rd place ocb Amanda Mitchell (Crondon Park) & Gill Stallard) (Brentwood), 2nd ocb Karen Batch (Orsett) & Bev Munt (Gosfield). In first place also ocb and winners of the Bradban Trophy were Lorraine Wilson (Forrester Park) and Maggie Stevenson (formerly North Weald).

CRONDON PARK’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
S
unday 9th Sept was the biggest event of Crondon Park’s. men’s calendar, the Club championship, which was played in conjunction with the Taylor and Steans trophies. In the morning Dean Allen won the Taylor trophy 0 to 12 handicap shooting a great score of 77 medal play net 68, the Steans trophy medal 13 handicap and above was won by Jim Riordan with a score of 89 net 69. In the afternoon those playing in the club championship went out again to try to catch Dean up, he had a 6 shot lead, but he held on to it with an 85 which was only beaten by 2 people with 84. So a massive well done today to Dean Allen Crondon Parks new Club Champion, also a very big well done for organising today’s competition from all our members Steve Chettleburgh.
SUCCESS FOR ROCHFORD GOLF CLUB IN BRONZE SHIELD FINAL
he Bronze Shield Final was played at Braintree Golf Club on 23rd August T between Chelmsford and Rochford. The match was played in a friendly but competitive manner with Rochford winning 3 matches to 2. Playing for Rochford were Chris
Baker,Christine Woods, Hazel Jamieson, Elaine Tucker, and Terri Stanley with Carol Evans as their Captain. Chelmsford's team was Jane Malins. Pauline Nixon, Sue Watts, Angela West, Judy Wybrow. Captain for the day was Lady Captain Sue Cooper substituting for Ann Malyon who had captained her Bronze Team for most of the Competition. Before that, we need to tackle the fantastic Semi Finals that were played out at Brentwood and Colne Valley Golf Clubs the Committee’s thanks to Russell and Sandra respectively, their club members and support staff for putting on such fantastic days for us. The competing teams are shown here in the glorious sunshine ahead of their match. In White shirts are player-Captain Zulfi Ali’s Woolston Manor team, including singles Order of Merit leader Mazhar Iqbal (on his way to another winning point in the OOM). All against John Newman’s Warley boys in Navy blue. Zulfi led out his team and battled hard in a game that rarely varied from All Square through the 18 holes against Warley’s Mark Dowling, before ultimately securing a rare half point. The ultimate score of 6.5 v 2.5 belies what Neil and I were seeing as we roamed around providing the mobile scoreboards to the - 46 -
teams, with only a couple of large wins for Warley - with Nick Pulham defeating Darren Westover 5&4, and the first Pairs match securing a 4&2 victory over their Woolston adversaries as a large crowd of spectators gathered at the tricky down-hill, dog-leg right 16th hole. Fundamentally a solid victory for most of Warley’s single players, and an emphatic defeat of Woolston’s Pairs secure Warley a place at Crondon Park for the final.

SEMI FINAL 2: Again played in wonderful sunshine, this time at Colne Valley, the individual pairings and 4BBB results for Benton Hall v Stoke by Nayland can be viewed at www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/wsf2.html Another final score of 6.5 v 2.5 would suggest an emphatic defeat, but really victory came in a period of around 20-30 minutes where the 2017 Champions started to edge ahead, turning the board “SBN Red” for Chris Williamson’s team, egged on by their supporters, and seen here in their bright red shirts (clashing incongruously with the Jubilee Cup committee red uniforms too). Significantly, SBN won all of their singles matches, but only Richard Fryer’s 4&3 victory over Benton’s Kevin Kimber stands out. Noel Cooper’s Benton Pairs, (Benton shown here in their light blue team colours) had more of a positive result, with erstwhile Jubilee Cup Captain Dave Claxton and his partner Brian Blakesley giving Stoke by Nayland a bloody nose with a 4&3 victory. Notably SBN’s Byron Long secured a further point in his bid for the top of the Merit leader-board, against my personal nemesis Dave Curtis who beat me in the Quarter Finals -not much went right for Dave (even losing a 7 iron on the day) but still only a 2&1 defeat, which would ultimately maintain him as 7th in the OOM for the entire competition – well done Dave.

As I have personally come to expect from the Jubilee Cup teams, even at these late, key, stages, play was as friendly and jovial as ever with just a hint of seriousness – but always competitive! Both semi-finalists built us up for a cracking final to be played in late September at Crondon Park – but commiserations to the efforts on Benton Hall and Woolston Manor. My personal thanks to Zulfi and Noel for all their support, and their voluntary efforts at Jubilee Cup Captains. Both credits to their clubs. Both teams were absolutely distraught, but magnanimous enough to all applaud their victorious opposition and wish them well in the upcoming Final ... more on this, next month! By the time you will be reading this in Essex Golfer, the 2019 competition entry period will have been closed, and we will be gearing up for the AGM and Competition Draw on 17th October at Canons Brook Golf Club – keep an eye out in a future edition for all the draw Leagues for the 2019 competition. Isolation vs Integration he big question in sport is do we isolate a muscle group or do we use integrated T exercises that will work many muscles at once? I see many golfers in particular getting quite confused with "how they should train" that will better their sport. In my opinion, integration with any sport is absolutely key. When talking about golf for example; when taking a shot, there is never just one muscle that brings you back into the back swing, there is never one muscle following through and never ever does 1 muscle work to stoke the ball. Therefore, I feel integrated exercise (those that work more than one muscle at once) will better suit a golfer. I commonly see golfers (especially young golfers) coming up into the gym, doing biceps curls, DB bench presses, pectoral flies and then going home. There is so much emphasis in golf to build muscle to become stronger and better at striking the ball and hitting it further, I do agree that building strength and muscle helps but most
certainly not with just isolation to build specific muscle groups like the exercises above. With any golfer I train, programme and condition I will always use integration exercises to make the body a solid, strong unit then once I feel happy the muscles are strong and strong together working as a team, isolation can come in. Try the following integrated exercises to start off your journey to getting strong and stable; n Squats n Wood Chops n Assisted or non assisted chin/pull ups These are just 3 examples, the list could be endless, seek a fitness professional that can help you develop integrated programmes to follow.

ESSEX COUNTY TEAM v BEDFORDSHIRE Millbrook Golf Club – Sunday 2nd September 2018 ith some last-minute withdrawals, a fairly inexperienced Essex County Team turned out for the W last league match of the season away at the very tricky Millbrook Golf Club in Bedfordshire. This is a course which has caused us and other counties upset in recent times and despite our high league position compared to our hosts, we knew this was not going to be a walk in the park. Our thanks to debutants Ben Humphrey and 16-year-old Harvey Sullivan for stepping in at the last minute. So, the morning foursomes started as expected with Beds pair Jack Hawksby (who had shot a Millbrook course record 7 under the previous day) and Paul Kenna against Brandon Meads and Joe Tatam. No surprises in this one as the home pair won a closely fought match on the 17th with some fine golf on show. Match 2 featured current 2-time Essex amateur champion Curtis Knipes paired alongside Arron Edwards-Hill, two plus 3 golfers and highly fancied. After 9 holes the Essex pair were 2 adrift and looking up against it. But true class tells in the end with the Essex pair winning out on the last green for a 1 up victory. Honours even. Match 3 brought newcomer Harvey alongside his Abridge clubmate Jamie Richards. Some great golf from these two won the next point for Essex again on the 18th Green. The final morning match paired Chelmsford clubmates Shay McQueen and Ben Humphreys together (Shay in his first full County league match and Ben making his County Team debut). In a very close fought match the Essex pair stepped up to the plate with a win on the 17th green. The score at lunch, an unlikely but gratefully accepted 3/1 lead to Essex which could easily have gone the other way. In the singles young Harvey Sullivan took on the baton and went out number one against Jack Hawksby, relishing the opportunity. This was a closely fought contest with never more than one hole in it all the way. But for a bogey on the 18th Harvey would have gained a maximum 2 points from his debut, but a half against Jack was a most satisfactory outcome. Apart from Arron's 5&4 win over Beds youngster and Millbrook 5 handicapper Aidan Abbott, all the other singles matches were very closely fought with the 18th hole being the bane of quite a few Essex players with Shay, Jamie and Ben all losing this relatively straightforward par 4 hole. However, Essex ran out narrow winners of the afternoon singles by 4.5 to 3.5 with an overall match County Side League Match score 7.5 to 4.5 ESSEX v BEDFORDSHIRE Tribute to all the newcomers to the County side today. Joe, Ben, Shay and Essex Bedfordshire Harvey. All who produced valuable points for the County under less than ideal circumstances. The future is looking strong! This result ensures Essex win the northern section of the England Golf South East Group league with a maximum 4 wins out of 4, which puts us into the Final match against reigning England County Champions, Hampshire at Essex Bedfordshire Frilford Heath Golf Club on Sunday 7th October. Our thanks to the team and officials of Bedfordshire who always are a pleasure to be amongst, win lose or draw. Also, to The Millbrook Golf Club for their excellent hospitality on a wonderfully prepared golf course. Frilford here we come! Phil Hulse County Team Manager 2nd September 2018 Millbrook Golf Points

2018 LESLIE F WOOD CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL The Warren Golf Club – Sunday 2nd September 2018 he Leslie F Wood Final between Canons Brook and Woolston Manor was played on T the 2nd September at the venue of last year’s winners, The Warren Golf Club. The morning foursomes commenced in cool conditions, and there were signs of tension in some of the golf played over the opening holes. Most matches remained close during the first nine holes, but the first two games finished with fairly comfortable wins, ESSEX GOLF UNION one for each side. The remaining matches were all very tightly contested eventually concluding with a match each and the final match being halved. So, the lunchtime position showed the two teams in a tie, and the prospect of a close finish to the day. In the afternoon singles there seemed little to separate the teams as nine of the matches went through the 10th hole with either a 1up or All Square score. The sizeable support for both teams were being treated to some excellent matchplay golf by two evenly matched teams. As the afternoon progressed the tide slowly started to turn in favour of Canons Brook, as they recorded narrow wins in four of the first five matches. Matches six and seven were shared with a win each, putting Canons Brook close to victory, and then with a guaranteed half in match eight as it went to the 18th hole the result was confirmed. Congratulations to Canons Brook. It was an exciting conclusion to a great match, played in great spirit, both Clubs can be proud of the efforts of their teams. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank The Warren Golf Club for hosting the event, and also the many spectators who came to enthusiastically support both teams. LESLIE F WOOD TEAM CHAMPION

THE ROMFORD TROPHY Romford Golf Club – Friday 7th September 2018 capacity field of 72 players arrived on a bright and fresh September morning at Romford Golf Club to compete for the penultimate Order of Merit event of the calendar, all hoping to Win A the Romford Trophy, a competition Romford Golf Club have hosted since 1975. The course looked to be in great shape considering the tough climate this season has dealt courses across the county. The weather started brisk but bright, with little cloud cover it was hopeful that the day warmed up. By 10:30am temperatures reached near to the 20s which made playing conditions almost perfect, all be it that there was a stiff breeze that built as the day went on. The morning’s play saw several good scores returned, including 7 players braking par. These included Defending Champion Arron Edwards-Hill (Chelmsford) with a 68, Back to back County - 50 -

Champion Curtis Knipes (Abridge) with a 69 and Order of Merit leader Jordan Slater (Colchester) with a leader board topping 67 going into lunch. Other names included Will Percival (Orsett) with a 68, Sam Kinnane (The Warren) & Harry Wood (Boyce Hill) both had 69s and Brandon Meads (Chelmsford) with a one under par 70. After lunch, the excitement grew as news got back to the clubhouse that a number of the leaders were matching their mornings play with much of the same. William Percival fell off the pace a bit with an afternoon return of 73 (+2) which left him on -1 for the tournament. A respectable total to be sat on, in the clubhouse waiting to see what unfolds. The performance of the day came from 13-year-old Harley Smith (The Rayleigh Club) whose level par 71 in the morning was improved on in the afternoon by one shot. Harley, playing off of a 4-handicap managed to negotiate Romford in just 141 shots over the day, finishing his tournament on 1 under par and a deserved 5th place overall. Brandon Meads managed to equal his 70 from the morning round finishing on a -2 total of 140, giving him fourth place Harley Smith Arron Edwards Hill and John Fuller Romford Golf Club Captain. on his own. County Champion Curtis Knipes managed to equal his 69 from the morning round which meant he finished on 4 under par for the tournament securing a respectable third position. Our defending champion Arron Edwards-Hill was an early starter which meant whatever score he posted, the wait would be a long one. He set a total of 136, two more than that of his winning score last year but still sat on 6 under par with a pair of 68s, 2 clear of Curtis, he asked the question of Jordan Slater. Jordan now needed to deliver a championship winning round. Jordan’s start included back to back birdies which got him to -6 after 20 holes. He then managed to make a further three birdies on his outward nine for a total of 31 and now sat on -9 for the championship. It was then that Jordan struggled to maintain his lead by dropping three in the next four holes he fell back to -6 with just 5 holes remaining. His birdie 2 on his 15th hole saw him take the lead once more, but his bogey on his very next hole followed by a couple of pars saw Jordan finish on -6, equalling Arron’s 136. The unfortunate fact for Jordan is that there is no playoff at The Romford Trophy therefor Arron defended his title by decision of countback, a cruel way for Jordan to lose but a valiant effort and 2nd place still ensured him the Order of Merit title 2018. Congratulations to Arron on defending his title and being crowned 2018 champion of The Romford Trophy. Also, a huge congratulations to Jordan on a splendid year showing the consistency necessary to win an order of merit, with one counting event left to play at Upminster on the 15th September, where the Upminster Trophies will be competed for. Harley Smith’s total was more than enough to win the nett prize on the day, beating Jordan Slater & Harry Wood by 3 shots with a nett 133 (-9). Patrick Arundel was presented with a special prize also following his wedge from 144 yards on the 6th hole which required no more shots before walking to the 7th, a hole in one is always welcome on anyone’s scorecard. Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks, as always to Romford Golf Club for hosting the event and their exceptional hospitality. We would also like to thank all of the staff at Romford Golf Club, as well as their members for making the day possible, as well as Romford Golf Club Captain John Fuller for his kind words and helping present the prizes. - 51 -

THORNTON CHALLENGE CUP FINAL 2018 West Essex Golf Club – Sunday 9th September 2018
he 2018 final was played on 9th September between Chelmsford and Thorndon Park, on a very presented West Essex golf course. TThewell morning foursomes commenced in cool but sunny autumnal conditions with a cool breeze to trouble the players. The teams were well known to each other and keen to make an early impression. Thorndon Park made quick headway in the first two matches out in the morning, building comfortable leads at the halfway stage. In matches 3 and 4 Chelmsford were taking charge but match 5 remained very evenly balanced. As the morning started to draw to a close Thorndon Park’s Ben Horton and Lukas Warren closed out their match 4&2 and match 3 finished early with a good win for the Chelmsford pair of Jack Brown and Arron Edwards-Hill. But in the first match and anticipated win for Thorndon Park at the halfway stage was turning into a much closer affair as the Chelmsford pair mounted a fight back. This match eventually finished on the 18th green All Square. In the 4th match out the Chelmsford pair of Ben Humphrey and Gary Fisher arrived at the par 3 15th tee 3up on their opponents. A great tee shot from Gary Fisher disappeared into the hole, what a way to win a match! Gary was congratulated by all players and supporters from both sides on his hole-in-one. Match 5 was a close battle all the way round, fittingly finishing on the 18th hole, a narrow victory to Chelmsford. Both teams headed for lunch with ESSEX GOLF UNION Chelmsford holding a 2 point lead, which a couple of hours earlier had seemed very unlikely. By the time the afternoon singles commenced the breeze had started to blow stronger. The 100+ supporters were being treated to some excellent matchplay golf, as the players battled the elements as well as each other. Thorndon Park needed some positive results from the early singles matches, but Chelmsford’s Alex Bradley had other ideas, racing into an early lead which he never gave up, eventually winning 3&2. There were early finishes in favour of Ali Plumb for Chelmsford and George Gennings for Thorndon Park, and as the first six matches had concluded Thorndon Park had closed to within a point of Chelmsford. The competition was potentially heading towards a very tense finale, but then news came that Oscar Yeomans had won another point for Chelmsford to get them within touching distance of the overall victory. And so to match 8, and once again Gary Fisher stood on the 15th tee 3up, just as he had done in the morning. Another great tee shot would give him the chance of a birdie which he duly holed to close out his match 4&3 and confirm Chelmsford as the 2018 Champions. The final match result was 9 – 6 in Chelmsford’s favour as the final two matches agreed to settle on halves. It was an excellent day of golf played between two teams who clearly had great respect for each other. Eleven current players involved in one County team or another were involved in this final. Our thanks to West Essex for hosting the match and providing excellent hospitality, and to all the spectators for providing encouragement to both teams throughout the day.
JOHN DAY TROPHY FINAL Thorndon Park – Wednesday 12th September 2018 he setting for the inaugural John Day Trophy final was the excellent Thorndon Park T course, hosting The Essex and Three Rivers Golf Club’s on 12th September. A fitting setting for the first final in this competition as John Day’s daughter is a member at Thorndon Park. The two teams set out in almost perfect weather for a late summer afternoon of tense matchplay golf. As the matches ESSEX GOLF UNION progressed through the ESSEX JOHN DAY TROPHY 9th hole the final looked to be fairly evenly balanced between the sides with EGU President Elect Brian Collins Presents the John Day Trophy to Three Rivers Golf Club. a number of matches All Square, but with maybe a slight advantage to the Three Rivers team. With a testing back nine ahead either team could still win the day. As the first few matches began to reach the concluding holes it became clear that the Three Rivers team had mastered the back nine better than their opponents. The first two matches out went down the 18th resulting in a win and a half for the Three Rivers players and were followed by three more comfortable victories. The Essex needed some good results to bring them back into the match, but it was not to be as Bob Wells also won match 7 for Three Rivers which gave his team an unassailable lead. The last two matches out also resulted in halves. The final result was a 7 to 2 victory to The Three Rivers Club, without losing a single individual match. A great performance on the day. After the presentation ceremony the players and representatives of both Clubs enjoyed the hospitality of their hosts. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Thorndon Park Golf Club for hosting the event, it was a good match played in the best spirit of golf. FINAL

U PM IN ST ER T R OP H IES Upminster Golf Club – Saturday 15th September 2018 he Upminster Trophies are played annually at Upminster Golf Club, the Upminster Bowl is for players who are under T 25 and the Upminster Trophy is for players that are 25 years old and over. The event was the final competition in the race to Essex’s Order of Merit. With Jordan Slater having already secured the number one spot by winning the Order of Merit following the Romford Trophy where he finished runner up, second place was up for grabs with just a handful of golfers in the running. The morning was bright but brisk, the course was prepared Brian Collins EGU President Elect Shay immaculately with greens that measured 12 on the stimp meter McQueen Chelmsford and Lee Shaw at 7:45am. One hole that caused the players a considerable Captain of Upminster Golf Club. headache was the 14th. The speed of the greens made this hole location incredibly difficult, resulting in the 14th being the hardest rated hole on the day with a shot average of 4.9, nearly a full shot over it’s par. Just two players broke par in the morning round, Harry Robson (Orsett) carded a one under par 68 whilst Shay McQueen (Chelmsford) opened with a two under par 67. No one managed a level par 69 in the morning which meant these two were the favourites heading into the afternoon round. The afternoon round looked like it could present some exciting golf and it didn’t disappoint. Callum Hilton made a ten-shot improvement on his morning round by carding a 68 which saw him rocket up the leader board to secure 15th spot on his own, guaranteeing some OOM points after a relatively poor morning round. Joe Tatam (Brentwood) returned with scores of 70+71 for 141 (+3). Alongside him were Teddy Papple (Stockbrook Manor) & George Gennings (Thorndon Park) who both had 72+69 which also equalled Joe’s 141 (+3). Harry Robson faltered a little in the afternoon dropping 4 shots on the back nine finishing with a 71 leaving him on a total of 139 (+1). Meanwhile, Shay McQueen nearly managed a flawless round, if it wasn’t for his only bogey on the 13th hole. However, the 5 birdies he managed, meant he had carded the lowest score of the day with a 4 under par 65. This with his 67 of the morning round, totalled a marvellous 132 (-6). Winning by 7 shots Shay demonstrated that despite the tricky green speeds a great score was still achievable. Well Done Sha, some fantastic golf. In the Upminster Trophy, Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill) was top of the pile with rounds of 70+73 for a 143 finish. Daniel Capps (Thorpe Hall) was just one shot back with rounds of 74+70=144. In third place was Andrew Reynolds (The Essex Golf & Country Club), with rounds of 72+73 for 145 (+7). Our thanks, as always goes to Upminster Golf Club, their members, all of their staff and their Captain Mr Lee Shaw who helped throughout the day with the starting and presentation of the prizes. Thank you to Upminster Golf Club for their hospitality and we look forward to Harry Robson – Orsett and Teddy Papple – Shay McQueen – Chelmsford. Stockbrook Manor. returning next year. - 54 -

ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Chelmsford Golf Club – Wednesday 5th September 2018 he 2018 Seniors Team Championship was played at Chelmsford Golf Club on T 5th September between The Rayleigh Club and Benton Hall. The two teams set out on a course which was in excellent condition and in almost perfect weather for a summer afternoon of tense matchplay golf. ESSEX GOLF UNION As the matches progressed through the 9th hole the final looked to be fairly evenly balanced between the sides with a number of matches All Square, suggesting either team could win the day. The first three matches out resulted in comfortable victories and gave The Rayleigh team a slight advantage, but as the next few matches passed through to the 15th tee they were much closer, and the final result was still very much in the balance. As matches 7 and 8 concluded the Rayleigh Club still held a slim advantage having seen a number of tense finishes down the 18th hole. Match 9 resulted in a win to Benton Hall on the 17th green, which tied the overall position at 4.5points each with just two matches left on the closing stretch. The large number of supporters in attendance were being treated to some excellent golf in a very tense atmosphere. Finally in match 10 Ted Keeble close out his match with a 2&1 victory for The Rayleigh Club and Derek Somers followed this up with a victory on the 18th green to clinch the overall victory. The final result was 6.5 to 4.5 to The Rayleigh Club. SCRATCH LEAGUE FINAL he 2018 Youth Shield final was played at Clacton Golf Club on Sunday 16th September with TTheAbridge playing against last year’s beaten finalists Colchester. standard of golf on display was excellent and kept the large number of supporters entertained throughout the final. Abridge were unable to play Curtis Knipes in their team as he was on duty for Essex in the County Champions event at Woodhall Spa, but that did not deter Harvey Sullivan, promoted to number 1 he had an excellent 6&4 victory over Colchester’s Dan Nicholls. Wins for Max Maynard and Josh Coleman got Colchester on the scoreboard, but a win on the 18th by Lewis Wright tied things up at 2 points each with the final match entering the closing holes. Colchester’s Charley Hayley was 2 up going down the 16th hole, but a short while later after some gritty play from George Halleybone the match was on the 18th tee with Charley only 1 up. George managed to par the 18th leaving Charley with a four-footer to win the match, but alas her putt slipped by the hole taking the match into extra holes. For the second year running The Youth Shield final, and Colchester’s fate, would be sealed in extra holes. Thankfully for the Colchester supporters Charley did not let the missed putt on the 18th affect her, and in SHIELD YOUTH INTER-CLUB winning the first extra hole she brought an excellent final to a close, and the Youth Shield trophy to Colchester. It was a great match which was enjoyed by all spectators, our congratulations to Colchester who have won the trophy they so narrowly lost last year. Our thanks to Clacton Golf Club for hosting this event as part of our finals day.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Woodhall Spa Golf Club, Lincolnshire – 15th & 16th September Woodhall Spa Golf Club, Lincolnshire he annual end of season extravaganza to find the Mens’ Champion of County Champions took place at the England Golf Headquarters on the magnificent world ranked Hotchkin Course of T Woodhall Spa Golf Club. Measuring a shade under 7100 yards from the blue tees with 111 bunkers combined with gorse and heather rough this heathland course needs to be taken very seriously indeed with two time Essex County Champion and England Boys player Curtis Knipes representing Essex. Past winners of the Mens’ Championship include Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Lee Westwood and more recently Tommy Fleetwood, so this tournament is certainly one that identifies future golfing stars. As Curtis teed it up against his older golfing peers there was a measure of optimism amongst the small contingent of travelling Essex supporters that our man had the skill to bring home the silverware. The morning round was largely uneventful, which on greens running at an alleged 13 and winds gusting up to 25 mph was no mean feat and at the break having carded three birdies and two bogies Curtis was the only player to break par, although there were two on par in close pursuit. With the wind still blustery the lunch conversation was that an afternoon round of par could be enough. Golf has a funny way of getting its own back on even the best CONTINUED OVERLEAF - 57 -

golfers and having opened his afternoon round with a birdie Curtis then played some “army” golf with bogie, birdie, bogie, birdie, Par, Bogie, birdie, birdie. Despite the adventurous outward nine Curtis still turned two under par for the round and three under overall. By the turn it had become apparent that the wind had cast all but three of the field adrift one of whom was Curtis’s fellow competitor Ollie Huggins of BB&O. Ollie had quietly banked two birdies against one bogie having racked up a fair yardage in putts and turned level for the tournament. Joe Cruse from Cornwall in the following group had also negotiated the testing conditions and also turned level for the day. So there we have it the Essex man has a three stroke advantage over his nearest and only serious competitors. Let the back nine begin. We have been told time and time again that the competition doesn’t start until the back nine on Sunday, well let me tell you reader that this particular Sunday back nine was no exception. On the 11th Curtis pulled his drive into trees, but was able to escape with just a bogie cutting his lead to two strokes. Then at the 12th par three Ollie holed a monster for a birdie cutting the lead to one. Events at the 13th hole should have put an end to Curtis’s Championship aspirations. He pulled his drive into a gorse bush, but it was one of those “do you feel lucky” lies. Not quite in, but far enough to make it difficult. Far be it for me to tell a plus 3 golfer what to do next, but for me it was two club lengths and a one stroke penalty all day. Not so our County Champion and to spare him further trauma and embarrassment let’s just say he earned a triple bogie to Ollie’s birdie handing him a two stroke lead, so for the first time the name Knipes was not at the top of the leader board. Both players birdied the 14th and at the 15th Curtis dropped another stroke handing Ollie a three stroke lead with two holes to go. A birdie was the minimum requirement at the 17th and Curtis duly obliged by holing out from ten feet. At this point the Essex contingent were in sombre mood and hoping for an eagle to at least give our man a sporting chance. At the par five 18th Curtis drove his ball right of centre slightly blocking his line to the green about 260 yards away. What happened next was certainly not in Ollie Huggins script as he, who had driven the ball immaculately all afternoon, pulled his tee shot into a broom bush leaving himself with no option but a penalty drop, however two club lengths was only sufficient to facilitate a pitch back onto the fairway followed by a lay-up. Wisely Curtis decided to lay-up to his favourite distance leaving himself with 100 yards for an up and down potential birdie. Ollie arrived on the green in five strokes with an eight footer for a closing six. Curtis’s stroke to the green left him with a ten footer. Both putts were missed and they finished their regulation rounds on 146. Whilst the Knipes/Huggins joust had been going on Joe Cruse behind couldn’t buy a putt parring every hole on the back nine to also finish with a score of 146. With no other player coming within five strokes of these three it was off to a sudden death play-off on the 1st and 18th until there was a winner. All three players birdied the first hole, but Ollie couldn’t match the birdies of Curtis and Joe on the 18th, then on the 1st second time round Curtis holed a bit of a monster from off the green to force another birdie out of Joe Cruse. On the 18th both players hit good drives and had an opportunity to go for the green in two. Joe’s second shot was heading for the out of bounds but clipped Curtis’s dad’s trousers and came to rest short of the green and OOB in light rough, whilst Curtis made the greenside bunker just short of hole high in two. Joe’s third to the green was not going to stop and he left himself a longish putt for a birdie which he missed. Curtis played out of the bunker to within ten feet leaving himself with a birdie putt to win the tournament … and he duly obliged. So there we have it a level par afternoon round would have got the job done in regulation time and I wouldn’t have missed my dinner booking. With all the shenanigans on the back nine it was hard to believe that Curtis actually finished on level par. Great entertainment, but hard work for the Essex camp followers combined with a slight note of sadness for Ollie, but that’s golf for you.Well done to Curtis for a tenacious performance that amongst other things earns him a valuable free pass into the 2019 Brabazon. - 58 -
PLAY CARNOUSTIE AND WENTWORTH AT STOKE BY NAYLAND
T
he award-winning Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa resort has introduced a unique Winter Golf package this year which will be hard to resist. The East Anglian venue has just installed a state-of-the-art Foresight GC Quad Golf Simulator, and as a special introductory offer they have included it as complimentary within their Winter Golf Package. This means that up to four players at a time can enjoy a free hour playing Carnoustie, Wentworth, Dubai and many more famous courses around the
world as part of your package this year. You can order food and drink from the clubhouse to sustain you during your game, and you have the option to extend your time for just another £30 an hour for up to four people. You can also practice your skills and have some fun with competitions like longest drive and nearest the pin - and all in perfect conditions, even if it is dark or raining outside! It’s the perfect way to enhance your golf break this winter. “We have also invested in the installation of extensive drainage systems on both courses which means that we can offer two fantastic, championship courses for twelve months of the year. In addition, there are permanent buggy paths around the 18 holes of the Gainsborough Course for all year round use, so we hope that many golfers who haven’t yet tried our courses will come this year to enjoy some great winter golfing conditions.” Please visit www.stokebynayland.com for more information or call 01206 262836 for bookings.
PETER BLEWITT TROPHY
I
n lovely early autumn conditions Stoke by Nayland Golf Club held their rearranged Peter Blewitt American Greensomes competition. This Easter mixed event had been postponed because of adverse weather. There was an 8.00 shotgun start on the Gainsborough Course, which is in mid preparation for WPGA International Challenge 2018 which starts with the Pro-Am on Wednesday 12 September through to Saturday 15 September. It was very fitting that this competition was won by Janet Hodge and her partner Robbie Benson. Janet recalled that she had joined Stoke in 1983 when the Captain was Peter Blewitt. Peter, and his wife Rita, always enjoyed playing mixed golf and the Stoke members play for his trophy every year. Janet and Robbie were presented with the Peter Blewitt Trophy by
Captains Alan Line and Elaine Davidson. In second place spot were Ian McKay and Maryan Griffiths. Full Results: 1st Janet Hodge and Robbie Benson – 44 points. 2nd Maryan Griffiths and Ian McKay – 41 points ocb. 3rd Diana Harris and John Sandford – 41 points Robbie Benson and Janet Hodge with the ocb. Peter Blewitt Trophy. - 59 -

THE
SCORING METHOD “UNLOCK YOUR TRUE GOLFING POTENTIAL”
W
hy is it your golf swing is great one minute and poor the next, you play nine holes great but fall apart on the last 6 holes. Does this sound familiar? The answer is, we have all learnt in the same way. The norm for golf tuition is buy some of the professional’s time, receive a fix to your broken swing, then your ready to play. Your game continually peaks, troughs or plummets, you then blame the teacher, so you go and find another, moving from one quick fix to next. Your game never really improves. Other golfers justify never taking lessons by saying the professional will change everything, but in desperation you take advise from another well meaning member at the club. From the start we are told how difficult the game is, how frustrating and annoying it can be and how difficult the technique is to grasp. Golf is a game of mistakes, what could that mean to a normal golfer, to me its how wide and how often does that mistake occur. So why are you attempt to perfect it, the perfect game doesn’t exist. Stop it now.
Maybe there is another way. There is a Revolution in Golf tuition, waging war on High Scores. The scoring Method is the new way, golf coaching, not golf teaching. We know there’s a major difference. Our unique system adapts to all players, high handicap, low handicap, scratch player, mini tour and even a tour pro, we all play at our own ability level. Learn the 10 Keys to scoring, understand the real game of golf, create a new mindset and practise with a purpose. A great swing technique doesn’t guarantee better scores or a good outcome, learning new skills, having fun and enjoy playing more does. We mix playing with training session to acquire new skills. We guarantee, yes guarantee lower scores come to a free workshop/clinic to find out more. We have 2 locations, Basildon Golf Course in Essex and Southern Valley GC in Kent. FUN MIXED CHARITY GOLF DAY FIVE LAKES GOLF CLUB WITH DINNER AT THE HARBOUR VIEW BISTRO, TOLLESBURY MARINA.
T
his year resulted in less golfers but more people supporting the dinner. On the golf course there was much fun and laughter when playing a nine hole Las Vegas Texas Scramble. The roll of the dice determined which drive was to be taken. Mulligans were purchased and these were used to take a second shot anywhere on the course. Strategy is needed to decide the best use of mulligans. The winning ladies team were the Wacky Hackers from Burnham Golf Club, winning mixed pairs were Bon Amis from Five Lakes and Romford and the men’s team was The Famous Four from Epping Golf Club.
The winners of the Individual Stableford competition on the back nine were the first lady Penny Blackwell and first man Roger Loveday. Nobody got on the green of 16th for nearest the pin. Tough Hole! The lady with the longest drive
was Avril Longley and Matt Smith for the men The golfers were joined by twenty six nongolfers for dinner and the fun activities. On arrival, there was a wine tasting quiz for the thirteen teams. This was sponsored by G and G Gallo. Two of the teams scored nil points!! Dinner was excellent and everybody was treated to table magic performed by Dave Wood. Then came the cake tasting for Star Baker. The teams tasted and judged ten cakes in the Bake Off. All of the cakes were delicious but star baker was Sue Jenner with a her cake No, No, No. The cake had no sugar, no eggs and no fat. The auction produced many laughs as a result of our funny auctioneer. The total amount raised for Amy’s Gift to St Lucia, including golf, donations and the auction, was £1,233. The project was set up in 2014 following a grant from the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Amy spent many happy times in St. Lucia and said it was her second home. The project improves the health and happiness through music therapy for over 100 special needs children and for boys at the Training Centre who are wards of Court and are in need of care and protection. Thank you our sponsors and to everybody who supported the day.
