Rascal Bay

L

ooking for something to do this summer? Fancy letting your imagination run wild? Laughing until your sides hurt? Then come visit one of the best Adventure golf course’s we have seen! Hidden in the heart of King Georges Playing fields in Brentwood is Rascal Bay Adventure golf paradise. As you approach the entrance you are greeted with 2 adult silverback Gorillas carrying their young, Monkeys swinging in the trees, Dinosaur’s roaring and a happy Pirate theme tune. The course is littered with an array of Pirates, cannons, octopus’s, Snakes, Flamingos, Turtles, Frogs, Parrots’, Skulls, Meerkats, Crocodiles, Dinosaurs and bats to keep even the youngest eyes amused. There is even a Jeep that has crashed into a waterfall, with water spraying out of the engine. You can hear the jeep trying to start and eventually it backfires, covering the surrounding area with smoke! The course was quite busy on our visit, but it was apparent that everyone was enjoying

themselves, including children as young as 3 and up to adults in their nineties. The course was built and opened 2 years ago by PGA Golf Professional Stephen Cole and his Business partner Allan Pierce. The pair negotiated with Brentwood Council to allow them to replace the old worn out crazy golf with this £0.5m adventure course which is themed on a lost island setting. The pair then invested further last year into sound and smoke effects and a larger collection of pirates and animals. Rascal bay Brentwood proved such a success that the pair have now built a second course in Manston Kent which opened in June last year. The New Gateway for Golf in North West Spain is Now Open

S

teve Parlee, United States PGA professional explains! Here on our Costa Verde Spain’s best kept secret has been revealed. Our new golf gateway is now open with thanks to Tony Fuller our founder in realising the Steve Parlee – Director. dream and now putting us on the golfing map internationally. This is serious golf country, this is the homeland of Seve Ballesteros, this is where some of Spain’s finest courses are to be discovered! Our region has the potential to become one of Europe’s finest golf area’s. It was an honour to host Brad Preston and his Woolston Manor golf club in 2015.The golfers were amazed with our courses that vary in many ways, challenging and superbly designed, lush green and magnificently maintained. From Asturias in the west to the Basque country in the east, the new gateway for golf in north west Spain is now open. It was

never a question of if! It was always just when! Brad Preston’s PGA Professional tells us more. Having played many courses all over the world I was curious and uncertain what to expect on Spain’s Costa Verde. With this being the homeland of Seve Ballesteros why was it so unheard off? Costa Verde Golf offer 3 golf hub area’s Asturias, Llanes & the Seve hub in Cantabria. We golfers in Essex now have the fantastic opportunity of visiting directly from Stansted on a 1 hour & 35 mins flight. Woolston Manors golf tour was incredible! This new golf region is not to be missed, playing Seve Ballesteros’s home course of Santa Marina was a golf experience never to be forgotten. Then into Asturias to play at Real Club de Golf Castiello this is probably one of the best courses I have ever had the privilege of playing. LLanes and its amazing links course was breathtaking to play. The hospitality was second to none. The courses are at the high end as courses play, and the diversity in golfing fields of play are superb. Parkland, Links and Hillside its all there. The Costa Verde will be the next big location for golf tours in Europe. Le Touquet has serious competition on its hands. Highly recommended, the hotels, the restaurants, the golf all 10/10.

Basildon Opens England’s Largest Putting Green and it is Soon to Host the First British Open Putting Championships

A

n area of just over three-quarters of an acre in size has been used to create England’s largest putting green at Basildon Golf Course. Putting is a vital part of golf for the 21st-century: putting is what unites all golfers, of all ages, of all abilities. There is hope for everyone on the putting green. Many of us started as toddlers with a borrowed or shortened putter, scraping the ball towards the hole by the seaside on a putting layout of some description. Basildon Golf Course Director Colin Jenkins added: “The most memorable putting greens across the world of golf are the ones with bumps and swales and hollows and humps - ones that require imagination and vision to negotiate. These are the ones that bring out the child in us all. We have built a crazy grass putting green on the site of the old clubhouse. First, we had to clear the scrubland, which was a complete eyesore for anyone arriving at the golf course. We have carefully built smooth undulations, which are both interesting and cuttable with modern golfing

machinery. Finally, in September last year, we were ready to seed. Our green keeper Stephen and the rest of the green keeping team have done us proud with their efforts and attentions on this mad scheme, which now gives Basildon the most beautiful emerald putting green - England’s Largest Putting Green. It’s a great place where golfers can putt and chip for hours on end, and we are all very proud of it." The course has just opened, less than 10 months after it was seeded with prices for nonseason-ticket holders set at just £4 for adults and £2 for children under 18. This entitles someone to putt all day. Use of the putting course is also included in any green fee paid on that day. The British Open Putting Championships will be held at Basildon on 1st and 2nd September this year. For more details, please visit: www.britishputting.com or call Basildon Golf Course on 01268 533532, www.basildongolfcourse.com.

An Hour of Junior Fun S

arah Bennett PGA Fellow Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers GC held an hour of Free Golf for young golfers new to the game. The event is something Sarah has been heavily involved in over the past few years and is an exciting initiative held in conjunction during the week of The Open. HSBC back the event and hold the Junior Tri golf SwingZone annually at The Open which is a massive success even more so when the names such as Rickie Fowler help to promote the swing area. “I saw 12 youngsters this year attend the hour which was fantastic, slightly up on the 2015 event. The growth area was the number of girls who attended which is something I have been working towards over the past 7 years and now those numbers are increasing. The transition has been a slow process but it is happening which can only be good for the game”

I will be starting up GolfingGirls only weekly sessions with a mix of players who attended the National Girls Golf Rocks starter sessions initiative and new players who are expressing an interest. The Junior Jubilees is currently a mixed Saturday group which is aimed at those young juniors just under the standard membership category. I am hopeful many of these young girls will be ready to attend the Essex Ladies beginners and improvers day on the 31st August at Three Rivers GC which I shall be hosting the “coaching” session prior to an experience on the Jubilee course, the first for many. If you would like any further information on any of the above please contact Sarah directly: Sarah@GolfingGirl.co.uk or M: 07719 617349 Twitter:@GolfingGirlUK

L

SET THE SHAFT IN PLANE

ast issue we started the swing away from the ball, in my opinion, in a neutral way with no wrist. Hinge. Picture 1 hopefully will remind you of this in-plane move away from the ball. From this point, it is ideal that you hinge your wrists, you do so in such a way that the club shaft is laid on the ideal plane. This is demonstrated in Picture 2, a simple way to think of this is to point the end of the grip directly at the ball to target line. If this is not done correctly the shaft will be either to upright Picture 3 or to flat Picture 4. The result of this tends to mean the club is not online or on-plane at the top of the backswing. A good way to practice this is to do lots of

reflection work either in-front of a mirror or maybe some patio doors. It is worth noting that a golf swing is more a feeling or sensation not just a thought process, so the more you go over the correct movement the greater the learning. If you are able to achieve what I believe an inplane backswing as in Picture 2, then the club will happily find its way to the top of the swing online to the target Picture 5. This will make our next stage the transition into the downswing more manageable. Next issue makes that efficient in plane transition.

Happy Golfing Gary

Clacton Golf Club C

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Ladies Essex Ladies Golf Union “Harris Bowl” team travelled to Five Lakes Golf Club near Maldon to play in the first of the 2016 Essex County Harris Bowl matches. Due to the bad weather, the course was very wet and the bunkers were out of play due to most of them being full of water. However, the Clacton team of Team Captain Fiona Cope, Denise Pink, Sonja Strutt, Di Kedge and Julia Hewett all the Clacton Ladies played well and were delighted with the excellent greens, With 3 matches going to the eighteenth hole; this match was a tense affair; however, lady luck was with Clacton as they won the match by three matches to two matches.

C

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Essex Golf Union “L F Wood” Team Captain Steve Parkes and his team of Darin Starling, Richard Hart, Clayton Jeffrey, Brady Diplock, Lee Harmon, Craig Green, Joshua Bethell, Adam Stringer, Jordan Blanche-Price & Colin Ross had a very early start on Sunday morning to be at the highly rated Romford Golf Club for their Quarter-final L F Wood match against Forester Park Golf Club. The first tee in the foursome’s morning session was at 8.30am and after the five, matches had been completed. Clacton were leading by 4 matches to 1 match. After lunch, it

was time for the 10 singles matches, the Forester Park team played well and with one match remaining on the course Clacton needed a win to force a play-off. Clacton’s Darin Starling won his match on the 18th green after a titanic battle. With the scores at 7 1/2 points each it was down to Clacton’s play-off man Jordan Blanche-Price and as Captain Parkes said, “he did a great job under a massive amount of pressure, however, it was not to be and Clacton lost the match by the narrowest of margins, and we wish Forrester Park Golf Club all the best in the semi-final.” - 20 -

Matt Stables is Head Coach of Four Shots Lower Academy at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre and A PGA Advanced Professional. Our Aim is to improve your scores by 4 shots over the next 12 months by giving you some simple proven techniques on all parts of your game to make a real difference to your game. We will make a plan suited to you to and your current ability to improve your game and increase your confidence and fun you have on the course. www.MattStablesGolf.com

The second in how we are going to go four shots lower after chipping is course management or your strategy around the course. Here are some simple ideas you can use in your next round to save a shot my managing your game better ...

SHOT 2 – COURSE MANAGEMENT It’s ok to hit bad shots just don’t hit 2 in a row – When you make a big number it's not the first bad shot that causes a bad score but 2 in a row. Aim not to compound a bad shot. Only try a shot you think you could pull of successfully 7 out of 10 times + You may be able to pull off a shot sometimes but play within yourself. Have a club that is not your Driver that you can get in play – It is great when you are hitting your driver well, but not all holes need it and if you aren't hitting it great have a plan B. It could be a 3 or 5 wood, hybrid or long iron. Play the hole from the Green back to the tee – When deciding how to play a hole, a good way to think about how you are going to play the hole is to stand on the green and look backwards at the hole. Is there a better side of the fairway to come into the green from? Where can I miss the hole and where can I miss a shot? Are there any bunkers that I need to avoid? When you

look at it from this perspective you will quickly see what the best strategy for the hole is. Try these simple ideas next time you play. Next time we will cover shot 3 which is controlling the speed of you putts.

Stokes and Adams Win Again in Norfolk Essex duo “gel so well” for victory in Marston’s Beer Summer Classic

M

ark Stokes (Rayleigh Golf Range) and playing partner Dom Adams proved their love of golf in North Norfolk with victory in the Marston’s Beer Co. Summer Classic. The Essex duo were victorious last spring in the Searles PGA Spring Classic, staged at Hunstanton and King’s Lynn.

This time the pair lit up the stunning cliff-top courses of Royal Cromer and Sheringham, notching a two-day tally of 83 points to win by five. Norfolk’s Mike Few (Weston Park) and son Blyth finished second. Stokes and Adams held a slender lead after the first round, played in a greensomes stableford format at Royal Cromer. Eight-handicapper Adams more than did his bit, delivering a series of top drives to set up Stokes who excelled with his wedge play. They accrued 40 points – one more than the Few combination. Stokes and Adams fared even better in the second-day better ball at Sheringham. Again the amateur came to the fore with a

couple of huge-gain birdies that counted as net eagles. Stokes, the PGA in England (East) captain for 2016, kept piling up the points thanks to a putter that blew hot at times. He said: “We’re such good mates and just gel so well. Dom played great at Cromer – he drove it so well and made it easy for me to just keep hitting wedges on the greens. “It was a good team effort. I’m not playing great but I’ve been around a long time and know what to do. I just got the blade working when necessary. “Both courses are fantastic. You couldn’t fault them. It’s been great fun.” Sam Teer (Clacton) and Wayne Ayton came close to matching the winning pair’s second-day score. Teer and Ayton racked up 42 points at Sheringham to lift themselves into third place. There was a cluster of teams tied for ninth spot, including Sheringham’s own head PGA professional Mike Jubb, alongside amateur Iain Taylor. PGA in England (East): Marston’s Beer Co. PGA Summer Classic: (First day stableford greensomes at Royal Cromer, second day better ball at Sheringham) leading scores: 83: M Stokes (Rayleigh Golf Range) and amateur D Adams 40 43. 78: M Few (Weston Park) and B Few 39 39. 77: S Teer (Clacton) and W Ayton 35 42. 75: M Jubb (Sheringham) and I Taylor 33 42; B Talbot (Brocket Hall) and J Darby 33 42; N Day (Millbrook) and J Hawksbury 34 41; D Fickling (Bush Hill Park) and R Stoddart 36 39; B Kerr (Bourn Golf & Leisure) and G Price 38 37. - 24 -

Stoke By Nayland Ladies Captain’s Day

T

hursday, 14th July was the date set for the Ladies’ Captain’s Day at Stoke-by-Nayland. The day dawned bright and sunny and with no rain forecast more than 50 ladies set about a team event on the Gainsborough course. Two scores to count on par 5’s, three on par 4’s and four on par 3’s. The ladies greeted their Captain, Betty Cox, driven in her decorated buggy by Ladies ViceCaptain, Anne Hemmings, to the front of the spike bar overlooking the two 18th greens where she was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Ladies Section Secretary, Ann Major.

Ladies’ Captain, Betty Cox, with her decorated buggy.

Betty’s chosen theme for the day was Cool Cats and Country Cottage Gardens. The ladies dressed

in all things colourful with some inventive costumes worn before (and during) play. As well as Betty, several ladies had baked cakes which Betty her husband Bob and Club Captain, Ian Thompson offered to the ladies at the halfway point. Bob had also made some scrumptious punch which could be drunk either with or without any alcoholic content. At the end of the ladies golf round Betty was joined by several non-playing guests including her brother and his wife and her great niece. A total of over 70 people sat down in the Garden Room to enjoy a delicious buffet of hot chicken, cold salmon, prawns, rice, various salads and dressings followed by cheese and biscuits and/or a very popular ‘build your own’ fruit dessert of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with meringues and cream. To finish was tea or coffee and chocolate covered fondant mints. One raffle prize of a round of golf for four at Bury St Edmunds raised more than £150 for her charity, The Childrens’ Society. First overall – Lesley Munro, Susie MilnerMoore, Joan Landen and Fiz Grundy. Second overall – Jane Golding, Hilary Cairns, Margaret Bentley and Sybil Paton. Third overall – Roz Clements, Gwen Broadhead, Debbie Howlett and Sue Gregory.

First place overall winners from left, Lesley Munro, Susie Miler-Moore, Ladies Captain Betty Cox, Joan Landen and Fiz Grundy. - 26 -

Following the Pro Am day, the Gainsborough course will host a strong field of Ladies European Tour hopefuls chasing a €30,000 prize fund at the penultimate tournament of the season. It will be the only LETAS event to be staged in the UK in 2016 and there will be 96 competitors including 15 WPGA members, comprising winners from the WPGA’s One Day Series and the remaining places secured via a qualifying Order of Merit over the same period. Fifteen places will also be allocated to the leading English amateurs decided by England Golf, recognising LETAS’s commitment to providing an important link between elite amateur and professional golf. Di Barnard, tour director of the LET Access Series said: “Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa is a first class venue and the Gainsborough course is a tremendous test of golf. We look forward to visiting again this year and welcoming everyone to the tournament. “ There is a lot at stake for the competitors with the top five on the LET Access Series order of merit earning cards on the Ladies European Tour for 2016 as achieved by last year’s WPGA International Challenge winner Natalia Escuriola from Spain. PGA head of tournaments, Ben Groutage, said: “The WPGA International Challenge has gone from strength to strength since its launch and we are delighted to be again returning to Stoke by Nayland who have been so supportive of the PGA and golf at all levels”

T

he Society of Essex Lady Captains entertained the Past and Present Lady Captains of Cambs & Hunts in early July for their annual fixture, this year hosted by Colne Valley Golf Club. Although the Essex Team were one player short on the day, they used their home advantage to good effect and finished with a convincing 4:2 win Despite the unusually heavy rainfall in late June, the course proved to be in fantastic condition for the 4BBB match play contest. Thanks to Colne Valley for hosting this event and providing lovely food before and after the match. Thanks also to Lesley Knight (Vice Captain of Colne Valley) who joined the players for the after match refreshments. All the ladies had a fabulous day, and the Essex ladies look forward to traveling to Girton Golf Club in 2017 for their return friendly match. The 2nd of the Society of Lady Captains 2016 Summer Meetings was held in mid July. 68 past and present Lady Captains traveled to West Essex Golf Club on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far. Teeing off at 12 noon meant the ladies played in the hottest part of the day, but it was a welcome change to see all the colourful umbrellas out for the shade rather than the recent heavy rains. Unfortunately, a few of the ladies found the heat too much and had to retire early to the clubhouse to cool down and

recuperate. Despite the extreme heat, many of the pairings played well, and most of the top prizes were fiercely contested. In addition to the competition scores, there was one lady, Deborah Jacobs (Abridge), who had something else to celebrate as she got a hole in one at the Par 3 136 yard 5th hole. She was presented with a bottle of bubbly (donated by West Essex Golf Club) to mark her achievement. Three pairs finished with 39 points. In 4th place, were Corinne Burnford (Colne Valley) & Deborah Jacobs (Abridge), 3rd place went to Lyn Anderson (The Essex) & Pam Stevens (Gosfield). Runners up also with 39 points were Linda Woods (Royal Epping) & Pam Hazelwood (Colne Valley). In first place and winners of the Joyce Layland Cup were Tricia Ainsbury (The Burstead) and Karen Charles (Colne Valley) with 40 points. Thank you to West Essex for hosting this event and especially for providing the ladies with the very welcome bottles of cold water on the course and the half way hut refreshments which were very much appreciated by all. Thanks to Lady Captain Kate O'Callaghan for all her help with preparations and to members of the Ladies Section for their help on the day. Pictured below are the winners receiving their prizes from Kate O'Callaghan (Lady Captain of West Essex) and Jan Collier (President of the Society).

Disabled golfers at Wychwood Park for North of England Open.

North of England Disabled Open 2016 at Wychwood Park

W

ith players drawn from as far afield as Devon, West Sussex, Lancashire,Yorkshire and everywhere in between with a wide range of acquired and congenital disabilities. Whilst there was great banter out on the patio and chance to catch up with old friends, new friendships were made out on the course, but the golf was a deadly serious affair. In all 28 disabled and impaired golfers took part in this inaugural Open held on Friday 8th July 2016. Wychwood Park only opened in 2002 and within a year it hosted a Europro Tour Event and has played host to the English Deaf Golfers Association – and now they can add the Disabled Golf Association to their string of accolades. It’s a monster of a course where a buggy is perhaps recommended and with their club championships the next day the course was in tip-top condition with greens like grease-lightening. It is particularly open on the back nine and the wind was up easily taking the ball 60yards off course. If you went in the rough (particularly just in front of the tee) that was another ball lost.

Winners_Row (L-R) George Ridley, Derek Radcliffe, Mark Helm, Ashley Harris, Sue Robertson.

So it was a course that would pull our top players to the fore, a thinking man’s course if you will. There are fond memories of the par-3s, the 6th and the 17th, with the monster 7th par-5, and the even longer 12th perhaps best forgotten. Our winners with their Stableford points were: Mark Helm, Overall winner (Gloucs) 33points ocb - congenital birth defect Sue Robertson, Ladies winner (Berks) 19points - hip fracture/arthritis Ashley Harris, Category 1 winner (Surrey) 33points - rheumatoid arthritis Derek Radcliffe, Category 2 winner (Lancs) 32points - fused ankle George Ridley, Category 3 winner (Lancs) 28points - above knee amputee. Organiser Graeme Robertson said “We already help to organise The Golf Trust Open held annually at The Shire London but there was clearly appetite for a similar Open event further north. Through an event of this calibre of participation we are able to showcase the incredible ABILITY of disabled and impaired golfers. It truly is amazing the power of sport for therapy and rehabilitation and generally for improving health and social life. It really makes a huge difference to people’s lives.” DGA is a pan-disability, not-for-profit organization, membership is free. Planning is already underway for next year’s Open and the Golf Trust Open is to be held at The Shire London on 22nd August 2016. More information is at disabledgolf.org.uk with events scheduled all over the country. We are continuing with support from BGL, Titleist, and Glenbrae. Realising the challenge of funding and with two home internationals in 2016, Graeme & Sue Robertson have spearheaded a fundraising campaign DRIVE2DRIVE to help offset the costs related to Team England and associated costs for the DGA. enquiries@disabledgolf.org.uk @disabledgolf

Stoke by Nayland Ladies’s Club Championship 2016

T

his year’s Club Championship was played on Saturday 23rd July. The Ladies have always maintained the tradition of the 36 hole medal examination to find their Club Champion so it was sixteen very brave competitors who set off at 8.30 am playing the Gainsborough course in the morning and the Constable course in the afternoon. The conditions were hot and sultry all day with barely a breeze but they all maintained a steady pace and took plenty of water so there were no casualties along the way! The very worthy winner was Tracey Dickens with gross scores of 81 in the morning and 91 in the afternoon, making a total of 172. The first nine of her morning round consisted of seven pars and two birdies. The runner-up was Pamela Randle, a past Champion who returned to the competition after an absence of three years and came very close with rounds of 87 and 91, totalling 178. She was followed by Margaret Bentley only two shots back with two rounds of 90. The Bronze Division Shield went to first time

winner, Elaine Davidson who had two great rounds of 102 and 107, total 209 narrowly beating Roz Clements by one shot – 101, 109, making 210. Handicap Prizes are also awarded and this year Jo Little took the honours with nett scores of 73 & 78, making 151, just beating Lesley Hitchcock who scored 76 & 78, totalling 154. Tea and the presentations took place immediately after play and a proud and relieved group of Ladies left for home promising to put themselves through the whole thing again next year! - 39 -

Five Lakes Junior Captain Wins Tolly Cobbold Trophy

T

he 6800-yard Lakes course proved a little tough for the majority of the Tolly Cobbold junior field with most scores in higher 20’s. However, junior captain Tom Arrowsmith, 8 handicap, overcome the conditions to come in with 31 Stableford points and take the trophy. In second place with a creditable 28 points was Yoyo Hobbs off her 12 handicap. Arrowsmith also claimed the nearest-the-pin second shot to the par 4 15th prize. Mixed Over 65’s Open Shorter Course Inaugural Event Thursday October 6th 2016

Following an initiative by Golf England to help keep mature golfers extend their competitive playing life Rochford Hundred Golf Club have laid out a new “qualifying green course” making carries from the tees to fairways and hazards more attainable. To celebrate the opening of the new shorter course we are holding an OPEN COMPETITION FULL HANDICAP SINGLES STABLEFORD format to all golfers aged 65 and over with a current playing handicap. This can include married couples and single men and women.

Rochford Hundred is a relatively flat parkland course designed by James Braid with some narrow fairways and a few strategically placed obstacles and hazards. The fairways are fantastic, as are the greens. The historic “haunted” clubhouse was once the home of the Boleyn family. The Boleyns owned the home from 1515, a home claimed to be the setting of secret meetings between King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. All tee times will be from 08.00 to 13.00 approx and coffee on arrival and an after-play light food platter is included in the value for money entry fee. We hope to make this an annual event and would like to see as many of you as possible playing in this new event. There will be prizes for many different categories so everyone is in with a chance.

Entry forms are available on our web-site www.rhgc.co.uk. Just click on “Over 65’s Amateur Open” - 40 -

MATCH REPORT - Essex went to Millbrook GC with a reasonably strong side and expectations were high. The excellent, challenging but quirky Millbrook course was in fine condition with very fast greens. The morning foursomes proved as usual to be pivotal where Essex having won the top foursomes managed to three put the last green in matches two and three to be 3-1 down at lunch leaving an uphill battle in the afternoon singles. The afternoon session showed great signs of recovery for Essex leading in most matches around the turn. Essex went on to win three of the first four singles providing a tense climax to the afternoon with the match finally decided in Bedfordshire’s favour (who capitalised on their home course knowledge) when Essex could only half the last two singles matches. This was an extremely close and exciting encounter which could have gone any way signifying once again the importance of a strong morning foursome’s performance. Essex now plays BBO at Wanstead GC in the next League Match on 31st July in what will be a “must win” fixture if Essex is to retain their title of Northern League Champions. Essex were represented on this occasion by:Andy May (Boyce Hill GC), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club), Jordan Wallace (Abridge GC), Todd Clemence (Braintree GC), Ed Fullerlove(Braintree GC),Taylor Carter (Rochford 100 GC), Will Percival(Orsett GC) & Mitchel Sarling (Boyce Hill GC), Report by John Peters County Team Manager

HERBERT BISHOP VASE

The Herbert Bishop Vase was presented by WH Bishop of Mersea Island Golf Club in 1939 to be competed for by the Captains and Secretaries of the affiliated clubs and the members of the County Executive Committee. This year 36 teams had entered the competition in the hope of lifting the fabulous silver trophy. The event was hosted by Garon Park Golf Complex, the course was in wonderful condition, and there was no rainfall either which was a huge relief after what June had to offer this year so far.The competitors all commented on how good the course was playing and also commented on the fabulous food served prior to the prize giving. All in all a successful days golf. The Warren Golf Club won the Trophy this year with a fabulous score of 46 points. Good enough to win anytime you might expect, but the standard of golf was high. Bob Hanlon & Kelvin Taverner only won by one point over Warley Park Golf Club's Peter Clayden & Keith Duggan who must have thought they would be in with a good chance of success after a fantastic effort of 45 points. In third place was Royal Epping Forest on 44 points, followed by Harwich & Dovercourt's 43 points in fourth place.

COUNTY BOYS QUALIFIER

Kings Lynn Golf Club, Suffolk – Thursday 14th July 2016

From left to right: Aaron Edwards-Hill, Callum Hilton, Callum Pipe, Ryan Tattan, Ryan Cox, Jack Dyer and Joshua Read.

Kings Lynn G.C. established in 1923 is one of Britain’s 100 golf courses with tight fairways, heavily lined with birch and pine trees, demanding careful club selection and precision. With David Brooks, Essex head coach, we used the 2 practise rounds to develop with the boys a plan, noting green sizes, landing zones, club selection and areas to avoid. This all agreed was the best prepared they had ever been. The competition was for each county (11 in total) to play 6 players whose individual gross scores (less the worst) would count towards the team total over 36 holes. Jack Dyer (U18 County Captain), led this team with 3 playing off the 1st and 3 off the 10th. Things did not go well for the boys, finding trouble with the trees and generally playing beneath their normal level. Best scores in the morning were Ryan Tattan – level, and Aaron Edwards-Hill + 2, leaving us in 5th place, 6 points behind the leaders Hertfordshire. In the afternoon round there was little difference in the boy’s general play.We did improve our team total by 4 shots over the morning with 3 players shooting better scores, notably Callum Pipe 2 under, finishing with the day + 2 and Callum Hilton also 2 under, finishing the day + 3. Overall we finished the day still in 5th place, much to the team’s disappointment. Hertfordshire were the winners, finishing with a total of 12 over. Squad members were:- Jack Dyer, Captain, Rochford - Callum Pipe, Braintree - Callum Hilton,The Warren - Ryan Cox, Bentley - Ryan Tattan, Chelmsford - Aaron Edwards-Hill, Chelmsford - Josh Read,Three Rivers. - 44 -

Well done James a sterling effort. Inevitably single round match play is a story of near misses and what might have beens and Sunday’s encounter was just that with many matches lost or won on the last couple of holes and the result sheet only telling part of the story.Yet again Harrison Linney bagged wins against both of his opponents and has yet to be beaten in the league this year. With the league decided on aggregate points over Matches Points the series of home and away matches Essex has now County Played drawn level with Surrey on 42 points with Kent on ESSEX 2 42 23 and Sussex on 13, but the latter pair having each played a game less. Our final league match will be at SURREY 2 42 Nazeing on 4 September against Sussex and Kent KENT 1 23 which will probably be the decider. Current SUSSEX 1 13 standings on table on the right. CLIFFORDS TROPHY 2016

The 2016 Cliffords Trophy competition took place on 20th July. The resident host venue for this event, Channels Golf Club, was looking in excellent condition on a very warm sunny day. The players found the morning breezy conditions making the conditions difficult on the par 69 course. Josh Cardy (Channels) posted the early 1st round lead of 72, but this was quickly followed by 70’s from Jordan Wallace (Abridge) and Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred). However, the lead at the half way stage was held by George Leversuch (Wanstead) with a very good level par 69. In the afternoon the breeze dropped a little and the subsequent scoring reflected the slightly easier playing conditions. Of the early starters in the afternoon Dominic Piccolo (Channels) returned a 70, and Joshua Read recovered from a disappointing first round returned what was to be the low round of the day, an excellent 68. Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park) then came in with a level par 69, and Christopher Chaplin (Rochford Hundred) and Shay McQueen (The Warren) returned afternoon rounds of 70, the latter two setting the Clubhouse lead at 146. Josh Cardy continued his consistent form this year with his second 72 of the day for a 144 total, but that was narrowly pipped by Jordan Wallace whose second round 73 gave him an aggregate 143 total. The day was won however, when first round leader George Leversuch completed his day with a second round 70, giving him a total of 139, and a winning margin of 4 shots over the field. There were prizes for the top four places in the scratch competition and two places in the nett competition, all graciously sponsored by the owners of Channels Golf Club, the Stubbings family. The winner of the nett competition was also George Leversuch with 137, followed closely by Shay McQueen with 138.

To Train or Not to Train? A

very common question I am asked is “should I be in the gym when its golf season? My answer is always YES. The golfing season is such a busy time, with competitions, practice for those comps, playing with friends in the evenings etc BUT you should always make time for the gym, to maintain flexibility, core and strength. The whole golfing season is a long time to not be in the gym. Training should be altered and adjusted for the golfing season, shorter sessions and more frequent or long sessions once or twice per week, prioritising stretching, especially after comps, preferably before bed as you will then sleep and physically heal in this lengthened state. If you choose shorter sessions but more frequent I would recommend 15 mins interval training sessions or 25 mins stretch and core programmes or a 25 min circuit or even better would be a mixture of all, alternating what you do each day. A great HIIT training session is Tabata training, look up tebata for some great quick 8 minute workouts to fit in around your golf.

If you choose to do longer sessions once or twice a week i would recommend a 15 minute interval warm up, followed by 20 minutes stretching and mobilising, followed by functional resistance training ... a real mixture to target every muscle. Cable machine workouts are my favourite for golfers to keep everything ticking over and functioning optimally. Look up 1 arm cable pull, wood chops and 1 arm cable push. These exercises are some of my favourites. Overall, keep your fitness, strength and flexibility ticking over, try not to give.

P

rize Management Ltd have launched their weekly online competition website, PrizeXtra, this month. It offers entrants the chance to win quality golf products using their skill, judgment and golfing knowledge. With a number of prizes on offer each week, entrants can participate in a weekly game of ‘Spot The Ball’ and pick the golfing prize they would most like to win. The company have joined forces with completegolfer.co.uk to offer top of the range prizes and give away promotional vouchers to every entrant that spends £5 and over in the competitions. Del Becomes Club Champion at Notleys Golf Club

O

ver two delightfully summer days in July, The Notleys’ ultimate challenge was contended. There can be only one, as the saying goes, and Derek Pettigrew maintained the focus over the two Saturdays to become The Notleys Club Champion for 2016. There were multiple competitions played over the two weekend, both individually over 18 holes and collectively over 36 holes. As a moment of reflection, however, the club would like to first pay its respects to David Earey, who sadly passed away recently, and who has been a great supporter of The Notleys. The members and Committee of Notleys Golf Club would like to pass our thanks to David Earey, and our best wishes to his family at this time. In honour of David, the Notleys Committee have inaugurated a new annual competition to be The David Earey Cup as a 36 hole Championship Stableford competition over the two weekends, and which was won for the first time by Graham Beale, who beat ex-Notleys Captain Adam

Painter by a single Stableford point (78 points overall), including a 42 point round. In the second-day Championship Shield, Dean Crowe with 40 points also beat Dean Field by a single point to claim the honour However, it is to the honour of the overall 36 hole Championship scratch rounds, that former Club Captain (and 6 handicapper) Derek Pettigrew with 158 shots, and with 10 shots ahead of nearest contender Club Chairman Dave White, took the Club Championship. Del is pictured below.

YOUR GLOVE WILL REVEAL ALL! W

e have all heard of the saying “Your camera never lies” but have you ever thought about the information your glove can provide to you and your PGA Teaching Professional? The golf hold is one of the most important aspects of the game and in my view it is essential that the many separate components are understood completely. It is vital that regular check ups are made with your golf Professional as many swing faults can be directly attributed towards an inconsistent hold from an early stage and right through your golfing life. A grip change, as you may already be aware is one of the hardest areas to change as the hands are the only point of contact with the club and even the slightest alteration can feel so uncomfortable and unnatural. (sounds familiar!) There are a number of elements that I mention to my clients regarding the hold with the following two areas relevant to this article.

n Positioning of the fingers on the grip n Grip pressure The hold position affects the clubface position during the backswing which can have a knock on effect on the single most important part of the swing; IMPACT when the club face strikes the ball.

- 54 -

Fig 1 Incorrect left hand position.

In Fig 1 The glove shows me immediately the club is being held too much in the palm of the left hand instead of the fingers, this causes a number of faulty positions during the first part of the swing for which compensations have to be made generally prior to impact The additional wear marks on the thumb and index finger demonstrates increased pressure combined with friction created during the swing. This indicates that the thumb is not ideally positioned possibly down the centre of the handle with the club held too tightly. The increased grip pressure can cause unwanted tension in the swing and even injury. The picture below in Fig 2 shows a leather glove with no wear or friction marks which has been used on a regular basis

How Do We Measure What A Golf Shaft is Actually Designed to do? F

or most golfers the stiffness of a shaft is determined by what is written on it. Ultimately, golf shafts are all painted so manufacturers have license to write whatever they feel on the shaft with no ‘industry standard’ this can become very confusing for the club golfer. We hear a lot about kick points but how is this actually measured? For a true understanding of a golf shaft you need to do two things, measure the frequency of the shaft and study what is called the EI profile of the shaft. Here is an explanation of the two:

Shaft Frequency: In simple terms this measures the overall rigidity of the beam length measured in CPM (cycles per minute). This is a good way to get an overall flex of a shaft but does not really home in on certain areas of the shaft. Measured in a machine called a Frequency Analyser the easier way to think of this measurement is once the shaft has been ‘clamped’ into the machine it comes down to how much that shaft will oscillate once a pressure has been applied. EI Profile: E = Modulas Of Elasticy I = Area Moment Of Inertia

Sounds confusing but this simply measures where the stiffness is placed within the shaft. In the next column you will see an EI Chart. - 56 -

Both the shafts in this graph are regular flex 40 gram shafts, however you will notice that the lines are very different. For the purpose of simplicity this shaft has been broken down into three sections, the Butt (grip end), Mid (centre of the shaft) and the tip (just before the shaft enters the head). From the graph you can see that the iWood (red line) is much stiffer in the butt than the FX140, this in itself will make the shaft play very differently. You will also notice that the mid section is much softer so again this will make the shaft play very differently. One thing you will see is that both the tip sections are pretty much the same as these are both high launch shafts.

Lily May Stages a Victory March to U16 Title

G

irl international Lily May Humphreys staged a victory March today, winning the English U16 girls’ open championship by six shots at The Nottinghamshire. Humphreys was nine-under par for the 72holes, signing off today with rounds of two under 70 and 71. She adds this to the English U14 title which she won last year. Afterwards, the 14-year-old from Channels in Essex revealed: “I just really like winning, Once I think I can win I’m determined to do it and really disappointed If I don’t” She also confessed to being slightly disappointed because she hadn’t achieved one of her championship goals of getting to double figures under par! “I was three-over par for the last six holes. I’d played really well before that but just had this mad half hour.” But I also wanted to finish all my rounds under par, and I did that, so that’s good, said Humphreys who scored 70, 68, 70, 71. The 72-hole championship developed into a

title tussle between Humphreys and her England team-mate Amelia Williamson, who was the runner-up on three-under par. Third place was taken by Anna Zanusso of Italy on level par. (IMAGE © LEADERBOARD PHOTOGRAPHY)

Nigel’s Captains Day I

n balmy weather conditions, all sections of Five Lakes Golf Club celebrated Nigel Popper’s Captain’s Day in fine style. With food and drink strategically placed around the Lakes course, there was no excuse for poor play and the scores certainly reflected this. Susan Butterworth with 31 Stableford points claimed the Ladies prize with

left to right: Sue Butterworth, Captain Nigel Popper with granddaughter Isabella,Tom Vass, and Charlie Powell.

Nancy Bradshaw in second place with 30. The Juniors had to resort to countback with Tom Vass and Lewis Cookson both on 40 points, but Vass took first place with a better back-nine score. The Green Keeper, Peter Smith, and his staff also contributed with were not in the mix. The Men’s main event was hard found with several players on 43 points, but the supreme champion was Charlie Powell with a magnificent 46 points off his 10 handicap. Runnerup was Bernie Sheldrick on countback from Danny Murtagh. President Barry Boniface created a very challenging putting competition with out-ofbounds on each of the 9-hole putting course resulting in single figure handicap Malcolm Pook taking 12 shots on the 3-yard 4th. Steve Ward won the nearest-the-line event with his ball landing smack on the line after a 220-yard drive. The day ended with an excellent barbeque and a full house for the captain’s presentations.

Junior Golf Alliance to Change the Face of Children’s Golf Coaching

T

he Junior Golf Alliance is looking set to launch in September following 18-months of planning, bringing with it a range of training and support services to golf coaches of children and young people. Members of the Junior Golf Alliance will have access to a wide range of online training courses, workshops and coach support services. In addition, they’ll receive a regular newsletter with articles of best practices from experienced junior coaches from around the world as well as being part of a community of coaches.

The overriding aim of the Junior Golf Alliance is to improve the experience of children in golf. Moving the sport of golf to one side, the Junior Golf Alliance will focus on the experiences of the children – how they learn, how they develop, what it takes to truly engage them and provide opportunities to play, learn and compete. It’s an overriding principle co-founder Neil Plimmer believes in passionately. “All golf coaches know about golf but are seldom experts in children. This is completely the wrong way around. Primary School teachers aren’t experts in every subject they teach – but they are in how to engage children and enthuse and motivate them to learn. The Junior Golf Alliance will also be tackling the subject of junior golf coaching from a business angle by looking at how coaches and clubs can generate meaningful revenues from coaching golf to children and young people. It’s a

question Neil is more than qualified to answer having established JOLF some five years ago. The coaching programme now has over 400 children engaged in 10 weekly sessions during school term time, along with many more in school holiday camps, children’s parties and in-school sessions. Neil continues, “There’s a lot of pro-activity at the moment with regard to junior golf coaching – and that’s great. However, ‘roll-ups’ and free sessions all the time, however well intended, isn’t the answer. How committed are the children (or more relevantly the parents) going to be with free, ‘turn-up when you want, if you want’ lessons? Moreover, how motivated are coaches going to be to offer their services for, at best, a modest subsidy – at worse, for free?” “It’s because of this that junior coaching is often given to the trainee or assistant golf professional. So we often have a situation where our most inexperienced coaches are coaching our most inexperienced newcomers to the game. That can’t be right”. Recognising that an in-depth knowledge of the golf swing and mechanics, or indeed an advanced playing ability, are of lesser importance when it comes to coaching children, membership of the Junior Golf Alliance will be open to people from all backgrounds, not just PGA golf coaches, who have an interest in introducing children to the game of golf. With a website due to launch in a few weeks’ time, the Junior Golf Alliance have launched their social media channels in preparation for September: www.facebook.com/juniorgolfalliance www.twitter.com/jnrgolfalliance www.linkedin.com/company/juniorgolf-alliance

Vic’s Big Day at Colchester Golf Club

V

ic Pomphrett, Colchester Golf Club’s Captain held his Captain’s Day at the Club last weekend. On a day where the sun shone for most of the time and not spoilt by an odd shower he held a team competition open to all sections of the Club. It was played in teams of four with the best two scores counting. The Captain also introduced a double scoring yellow ball which was played with by each member of the team in rotation, and it had to be included as one of the two scores. Having got control of the scoring. It was the team of David and Claire Croger plus Beverley and Neil Parker, who returned 107 points and were declared winners.

Returning the same score but losing out on the countback was Jim Wilkinson, Mike Carroll, Dick Bokenham and Tim Rogers. Third place was also decided on countback and was won by Sheila and John Dornan along with Mike Withers and Richard Shackell. Nearest the pin prizes were on the fourth Louisa Storey (6ft) and Brendan Booth (28inch) on the 8th Alison Clare (19’7”) and Roger Wright (3’6”) and on the 13th Jo Mager (14’6”) with Roger Wright getting a double with 11’10” Adam Harper won the putting competition, with all proceeds going to the Captain’s Charity The Riding for the Disabled Association.

Colchester GC Club Championship

C

ai James snatched victory from Ben David in Colchester Golf Club’s Club Championship. Played off scratch over the weekend, the 36 hole competition is the pinnacle of golf at the Braiswick Club and with James and David being level on 147 each at the end of the two rounds the competition went into a two hole playoff. Playing up the first and down the eighteenth and then if the scores are still level it would go into a sudden-death playoff. The pair had been nip and tuck throughout the two days with James having the better of it on a very hot Saturday with a 72, but David was right on his heels with a 73. David had started at a pace with birdies on the first and second but three bogies on the back nine against only one for James gave him the edge. Sunday’s scoring went David’s way when James had a seven on the seventh along with a double bogey on the 10th but James was still snapping at his heels, just one shot behind at the end of the round to make them level on 147 after 36 holes. In the two hole playoff, David birdied the first to James’ par, but the scores evened up on the second

hole when David put his drive into the ditch on the 18th and had to drop out. From there he could only make a five whilst James had a par, making them level again, and so it went into sudden death. The rest of the field could not keep pace with the leaders and were eight shots back. Lewis Barber and James Angel were in joint third place with a total of 155 and joint fifth spot was shared between Roger Wright and Richard Withnall, both on a total of 158. But up front, it was all happening with James and David going into the sudden-death playoff. It didn’t last much longer as James birdied the first against David’s par to give him the Championship. Kyle Appleton, playing off 16 and with rounds of 82 and 87 won the handicapped prize.
