DREAM DOUBLE FOR ENGLAND’S LILY MAY E

ngland’s Lily May Humphreys pulled off a dream double today when she won the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship just seven days after securing the Welsh title. The 17-year-old international was 10-under par after three rounds at Co Louth Golf Club and six shots clear of her closest challenger, Romy Meekers of The Netherlands. Humphreys, from Stoke by Nayland in Essex, led from wire-to-wire after her opening score of seven-under 67. She added two-under 72 in the second round and finished off with today’s 73. Windy conditions dictated the strategy for the closing round. Humphreys remarked: “The aim today was to try and just make my pars and take opportunities for birdies when they came – I knew the opportunities weren’t going to be many given the wind so it was about not giving shots away. “I did a pretty good job of that on the front nine - I hit three greens and was only one over par so I was quite impressed with myself! I hit eight greens on the back nine which helped settle me and it was a lot less stressful coming in.”

This is the latest in a string of wins by the teenager, who made her Curtis Cup debut at the age of 16 and has previously held titles including the English Women’s Amateur, the Scottish Women’s Stroke Play and the British Girls’ Championship. Her next challenge will be the 2019 English Women’s Amateur at Saunton – aiming to recapture the title she won in 2017, but her longer-term aim is to follow in the footsteps of Georgia Hall and Charley Hull on the LPGA Tour. Humphreys said: “I’ve been home schooled and next year I have my A-levels. After that I’m hoping to turn professional and I want to go to LPGA QSchool, but I am going to go to LET Q-School this year to get the experience. Hopefully I’ll secure some LET invites then to get more experience and move me up a level so I am ready to turn then.” Humphreys’ double win echoes that of Scotland’s Hannah McCook, who won both Irish and Welsh titles in 2018. She’s now playing on the Ladies European Tour’s Access Series. -8-

ROMFORD GOLF CLUB RAISE THE FLAG S

unday the 12th May we had a very special day at Romford Golf Club, our Flag Raising Day. 125 years ago to the day, the first round of golf was played on our course. 300 members attended. The winners Tony Ames, Ben Scanes, Jordan Wallace and Louis Lazarus won with a very impressive 55.9 score. The day was a huge success, we had the pleasure of the company of our Mayor and all food and drinks were marked at £1.25. 125 biodegradable balloons were let off into the sky. Also due to the nature of this day, one of our members Lawrence Kingsnorth, played his game using antique clubs often regarded as “hickories” pertaining to the club’s shafts being made from wood as opposed to the modern day technological options of steel or graphite. He was very fortunate to obtain some clubs that bear the mark of James Paxton, the fourth professional of Romford Golf Club, he thought it poignant and honoured to play with these in the Flag Raising event.

DO YOU WANT TO FIX YOUR SWING OR FIX YOUR SHOT! he concept of fixing your swing is something that most golfers are aiming for but is a T better way of thinking about it to focus on fixing your shots? If we are just fixing our swings are we just doing it to make it look more correct and filling our heads with ideas that don't really affect the most important thing in a golf swing, which is impact. It is an easy road to go down but can lead to confusion and sometimes you don't get more control of the ball. If we can understand what we each do individually that causes bad strikes and direction would you have a better ability to fix your shot on the course? It is a great idea to think about and can have a big effect on how you approach your game. It is try these few ideas for your game and have fun with them.

Understand what your bad shots are then work back from there – Most people have a

pattern of bad shots so try to understand what they are. Then get an awareness of what your path and face must be doing to create those shots.Your PGA Professional is a great resource to help you understand this. Ask yourself how will this idea affect impact? - Whatever thing you are working on in your swing, ensure you understand how it will affect impact and why you are working on it.

TOP THREE FOR THOMPSON E

ssex Golfer Charlotte Thompson had her best finish on the Ladies European Tour (LET) carding a final round 69 to finish 3rd in the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational in Spain, hosted by 10-time major winner Annika Sorenstam. Charlotte’s opening six-under-par 66 – her career best score on the LET – helped her to a share of the lead at the halfway stage. Thompson, who averages 275-280 yards off the tee, used that distance to her advantage on the difficult 6,427yard long course. Her opening round featured an eagle at the par-five second when she did not realise her ball

had gone into the cup, but at the same hole on Friday she racked up a double bogey. “What a start! What a great course, what a great day and beautiful weather,” said the 26year-old from Chelmsford after the first round. “I really took advantage of the fact that there wasn’t much wind today. I just played really smart and sensible.” Charlotte lost ground after consecutive triple bogeys in a 78 on Saturday which dropped her to 10th but was four under for her round after only three holes on Sunday and the fightback was on! Another triple bogey on the back nine blunted her charge but three birdies in four holes resulted in a round of 69 and at tied third, her best ever finish on the Tour. She said afterwards: “You’re going to drop shots around here, especially in this wind. I’m really pleased with the way I dealt with it.” Her 2nd consecutive top ten finish - Charlotte was 8th in the prestigious Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco - has moved her up to 18th on the LET Order of Merit and on course for a place in the Women’s British Open at Woburn in August.

BARNEY JUST MISSES ABU DHABI MATCHPLAY TITLE arney de Beer the 9 handicap B Player/Manager of the Gosfield Lake Golf Club Leslie Wood team in the Essex County competition is an avid matchplay golfer. Last year Barney entered the Abu Dhabi Matchplay Golf Championship, a season-long competition open to amateur golfers throughout England, Scotland and Wales. The road to the final was difficult and involved playing six knockout rounds with only two home draws against golfers from East Anglia and Southern England before reaching the Southern National final at Rye Hill Golf Club in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Only two players went through to the Grand Finals in Abu Dhabi and were joined by two players from the Northern National Final, all ready for their all expenses paid trip to the Middle East in mid-May. Three World renowned courses were chosen for the Grand Final namely the Saadiyat Golf Club,Yas Links Golf Club and the Abu Dhabi National Golf Club. In Abu Dhabi, the format was each of the finalists played against each other in a mini league match play over three separate days with temperatures in the high 30’s. The winner of each game received two points or one point for a half; however, all holes were played and counted. De Beer beat Joseph Cloherty from Liverpool 3 up in his first game, before losing to Danny Wilkes from

Birmingham 1 down and in his final game beat Stephen Kidd from Aberdeen 1 up. The final result when the round robin games were completed was a narrow win for Cloherty with 4 points and hole difference of 6, with De Beer second with 4 points and a hole difference of 3. Barney confessed that he had an amazing time despite the runner up position he gave his best and was competitive from start to finish. Barney was warmly welcomed back to Gosfield Lake Golf Club by his regular playing group who are accustomed to his never give up attitude but still keen to play the normal four ball better ball for a few pounds, front nine, back nine and overall. Some things never change in golf clubs throughout the UK.

MIGUEL AND SIMON WIN QUALIFIER imon Wright and Miguel Ruiz took S advantage of good course conditions to win the Playgolf Colchester Mullis Trophy qualifier.

Miguel Ruiz.

The pair now go on to represent the club in a later area qualifier. The pair plotted their way around the course in expert fashion, using their handicap shots wisely to card an amazing 47 points. Mick Hersant and Alan Smith can feel unlucky not to win with their score of 46 points, as can Jack Potter and Jack Blackman who carded 45 points. With good course conditions and scoring in place, it really sets the scene for this weekend’s upcoming Club Championship. - 18 -

Its All About

FUNCTION S

top overcomplicating it! Training for golf does not have to be complicated. A functional body is really what you should be striving for. Posture, core stability, flexibility, mobility and strength. Use functional movements in your training, avoid isolated exercises with absolutely no functional carry over. For example, use bent over cable rows over a biceps curl. The key movements to be practising; Squat, Lunge, Bend, Twist, Push and Pull. Bring all these key movements together to create stability and function throughout the body which will in turn have fantastic functional carry over to your golfing game! Exercises to try; bent over cable rows, goblet squats, walking lunges,

wood chops on the cable machine, one arm cable pushes and a one arm cable pull. You tube the exercises and start giving them a go. These exercises I would also call big bang exercises ... you get a lot of bang for your buck. They burn up heaps of energy and integrate the muscles. By integrating the muscles you are encouraging the muscles to start working together which in turn improves your golf. Its all about each side of the body working together to provide a huge movement. Start using some integrated movements over isolated and let me know how you get on!

GOOD TRIP HAD BY ALL

t the beginning of the week of the 29th of A April Stoke by Nayland Golf Club seniors started their annual tour. Seven years ago the Stoke By Nayland Senior’s Vice Captain had the great idea of arranging a VC Tour, since then the number supporting the trip has steadily increased and in 2019, 32 Seniors made the trip and played some great golf and had a considerable amount of fun. A superb 4 day trip into Northamptonshire playing Pavenham Park, Bedfordshire on the way

to Whittlebury Hall, after playing two rounds, where we were well looked after, before playing The Millbrook, Bedfordshire on our way home. Special thanks must go to Terry Mitchell, the Seniors Vice Captain who made all of the arrangements. 4 days golf, 4 different winners - Gordon Bryan, Graham Vandervord, John Parkinson and John Williams but the overall winner was Graham Vandervord, who had a great week.

AUSTIN DRIVES IN anet Austin was the winner of Colchester Golf Club’s ladies Spring Meeting. JReturning a handicap equalling 36 points

wo of Colne Valley Golf Club's best seniors T and juniors picked up the trophies at the club's Captains' Day.

Austin led the field in this ever popular and well attended event. Coming out top in the 57 strong field is no mean achievement. Not scoring on the first hole did not augur well for Austin but a par on the par five second hole put her round back on track and the twentyone handicapper finished just one point clear of Claire Croger (22) and Julie Nieuwenhuis (38) both returning 35s. Bridget Whitworth (16) and Katie Cooper (19) both returned 34 with Jane Lahore (24) on 33 taking sixth spot. Nearest the pin on the 8th hole was Val Doubleday and on the 16th was the ladies’ captain Maureen Devenish.

Seniors stalwart Norris Silk rolled back the years to win the men's trophy and teenager Mia Barningham romped home in the ladies' cup. Silk amassed 37 points off the difficult white tees to beat Jerry Callow on countback and put the other male starters into the shade. He also won the chipping contest. Promising young Mia totalled an outstanding 41 points, which was good enough to see her handicap slashed from 32 to 29. Second was Jane Tytler with 36. The stableford charity day attracted 67 starters and raised £1,086 for the Rainbow Trust.

GETTING OVER THE LINE! I watched a large amount of the US PGA Championship from Bethpage Black recently. Brooks Koepka, successfully defending his major title. I found particularly interesting the way Brooks dealt with a seven shot lead at, what every media source was telling us, was a tremendously difficult course.

The defending Champion had four successive bogeys on the back nine and Dustin Johnson whittled the lead down to just one, on the 15th, before he too conjured up a couple of bogeys. Koepka went on to claim his fourth major by two shots. What was the mindset of Brooks when he teed up on the first on his final round? To sit back and defend (dangerous) or to attack (equally dangerous!) Well he just went out and played golf. He stuck to his game plan, didn’t get ‘too’ embroiled in different thoughts, even when he started the bogey run, and stuck to his process. His goal was to play the next shot. How many of us, when playing golf, set goals? Yes, we want to win tournaments, competitions, swindles, and they are great to strive for, but hit one bad shot (especially on the first) and all of that goal setting may have to change? Instead, try this; set yourself the goal of hitting the next shot, the best you possibly can. If it gets you on the

about the next shot. I believe too many of us, when playing, have these goals that effectively put us under more pressure to pull off amazing shots. That pressure is not useful to good golf. Let me give you an example. Playing recently, I’d hit the green, reasonably close in two on a par four. Straight away one of my four ball said, ‘Oh great, a birdie opportunity’. Straight away there is pressure to hole the putt. But I’d guarantee, in that situation, many of us start forecasting, aligned to our goals, and working out how many points we’ll get, ‘if ’ it went in? With that ‘pressure’ it’s easy to become tentative and leave the putt short, or indeed, become aggressive and roll the putt 5 foot past. Why not go through your process, line up the ball, hit it at the correct speed and worry about the points afterwards? Forecasting can play havoc with your goal setting, so why do it? (I made the putt incidentally, for birdie). Should you have goals? Yes, absolutely, but follow your process, draw on all of that good experience to set up ‘smaller goals’, i.e. the next shot. By doing so, there is a much greater possibility of achieving your long term goal. Society and life would have us believe that we must always have goals. How many parents and guardians indoctrinated us with ‘You go to school, you study hard so that you can get good marks, which enables you to take further education. If you do well at that, you will get A levels or a degree, which will give you a great chance of a good job. Do well at that and your career path will take off and you’ll get a great pension’. You then retire and look forward to living your dream, utopia lifestyle! The reality is, we are often dead by then! Enjoy your golf, and think of that Ben Hogan quote … ‘As you walk down the fairway of life, you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round.’ www.themind-zone.com

SARAH’S STABILITY DRILL held a putting clinic last week which prompted me Iputting to write this article relating to stability during the stroke. This is an area which is very often overlooked while the assumption of many golfer’s is the path which the putter takes is the most important area which is not the case. The margin of error when we are faced with shorter putts is very small with precision the key, I believe the more stable we are during the stroke with minimal body movement will only be beneficial. Here is a drill to assist with your stability and balance which you can work on in the home at no cost, in my opinion training aids should be transferable and cost effective with instant feedback. Simply roll a hand towel nice and tightly taking your usual putting posture stand on the towel engaging your core muscles whilst balancing maintaining your weight on the balls of your feet. The goal should be not to tip forwards or backwards during the stroke. Stroke 10 putts standing on the towel keeping nice and steady then putt without the towel which incidentally will feel as if you are still engaging your core and

leg muscles. This is the feeling we would like to replicate during the stroke. There should be no forwards/ backwards or lateral movement during the putting stroke, with the help of the drill will help to produce a square face at impact which is the most important focal point. Give this a try it is not as easy as it looks but you will feel more stable and balanced Sarah Bennett over the ball.

When It Comes To

Loft

The Winner Takes It All… ow many times have I heard someone send a ‘SOS’ when it comes to driver loft: H“I out hit my driver high, so the guy in the shop said I should change to a lower loft but I still hit the ball too high!” If this has happened to you then unfortunately you have probably have just been ‘under attack’ from a classic sales pitch. Odds are you changed the wrong loft, here’s why… Golf clubs essentially have three lofts: • Static Loft • Dynamic Loft • Spin Loft

Spin loft we will leave to another time but let me define the other two: STATIC LOFT:

Static or Stated Loft is the loft on the golf club when it is manufactured. Wether it's an adjustable head or a fixed head the loft should be pretty close to what is written on it - but due to manufacturing tolerances this could differ by up to 1.5˚.

DYNAMIC LOFT:

This is one of the key ingredients that contribute to the height of the shot. Dynamic Loft is the actual loft on the golf club as it strikes the golf ball. This can be very different to the Static Loft as this loft is determined by the golfers swing and how the shafts reacts during the swing. In reality a golfer could easily see a difference of eight to nine degrees in their Dynamic Loft (loft at impact) due to their swing and different golf shafts. So, if you changed from a 10.5˚ head to a 9.5˚ in order to lower your ball flight you can now see how little the one degree difference in Static Loft actually makes when a golfer can fluctuate by such a large margin ... basically if you are unsure on what your club delivery information is you may have changed the wrong loft, who’s the winner there? Both of the images on the opposite page are from the same golfer (me), on the same day, with the same driver, same loft but with different swings. As you can see my ‘Club Attack’ changes hugely and in turn changes my Dynamic Loft. Between these two shots there was roughly seven degrees of difference in the launch angle and around thirty feet in height. - 30 -

With a higher ball flight the ‘Angle Of Descent’ or the angle the ball comes out the sky will become steeper leading to give less roll giving a shorter drive all round. If this had been two different golfers one of us would have needed a lofted driver, the other a lesser loft. Another thing to consider here is the ‘Ease Of Use Factor’ when it comes to loft. In a nutshell the lower the loft the more opportunity of increased side spin so for many golfers the quest for a stronger ball flight leads to a bigger miss. Professional Golf has almost become a distance game now but many club golfers strive to hit their driver so long that they sacrifice hitting fairways because of it. My moral here is simple, before you choose your driver you need to understand how you deliver the golf club and how your swing effects the loft on the club - only then can you choose the correct loft. Also, don’t let your ego get in the way ... if you hit the ball low a 12˚ driver doesn’t make you a lesser golfer, it makes you a smart golfer. When all is said and done, as always, knowledge is the name of the game. - 31 -

YOUR EYE LINE AND HOW IT EFFECTS DELIVERY PATH

ye line (head tilt) and its huge impact on club delivery is a subject that not many E coaches talk about, it is hard to find quality information on this subject but I am giving you a basic outline on the affect this has on ball flight. Eye line/head tilt and what direction the head tilt points the eye line during the backswing and downswing has a huge bearing on the path of the club in the backswing and the path the club head is delivered on coming into impact. Stand at address in posture and tilt (not rotate) your head to the right you will see that the eye line is now pointed to the right of your target. If you do the same head tilt left you will see the eye line pointing to the left of the target line. If the eye line is pointed to the right of the target line during the backswing most probably the club will move inside off the plane line too soon. In the downswing chances are the path

Head Tilt Left.

will be more inside and on an in to out path through impact. Obviously if the eye line is left then the paths will be reversed. These eye line/head tilt issues cause the shoulder plane to change either to more upright or flatter, which change the take away and delivery path of the club head. Obviously this information can be used in some cases to help to get your path out wards slightly to create draws or in slightly to create fades. The images below are massively exaggerated to show the head tilts and eye line differences. A head tilt of just 5 degrees will be enough to alter the paths so care should be taken when measuring the path issues versus head tilts. If you would like any information on the eye line – head tilt subject please feel free to call me on 07961 848 370 or email me at paul@paulhollandgolf.com

TASTY DAY FOR BOYCE HILL

oyce Hill Golf Club ran a taster day for B Ladies as an introduction to the game of golf, with a view to introducing ladies to our Ladies Academy. The day consisted of a Pilates class along with a series of tuition activities including Swing,

Putting and Chipping. This was all followed by afternoon tea. The day was considered a huge success, with forty one ladies taking part and as a result, the Club recruited six new Ladies to the Academy.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR CHELMSFORD’S GOLFERS ompeting in this round of Essex county competitions Chelmsford Golf Club’s C teams faced strong opposition. In the second round of the Lesley Wood Chelmsford had a tough away game at Theydon Bois. In the morning foursomes Chelmsford rallied after a poor start and went into lunch trailing 3-2. The afternoon singles were a real struggle on the front nine. Apart from Derek Piper who was seven up Chelmsford were down in most. The turnaround started when Rhys Dudley won a half point having been 4 down with 5 to play. Wins followed for Harris, Munday, Meads, Elwell and Piper. This meant a tie at 7.5 each. Andy Wren was the last man out playing an opponent who had beaten him in the morning. Andy had the last laugh winning the first extra hole with a par four, two putting from 30 feet. This was a great team effort and a deserved win. Chelmsford now advance into the third round. Sadly Chelmsford men were not as successful against Woolston Manor in the second round of the Norman Plum competition. After a thrilling first round victory when Chelmsford knocked out the current holders, The Warren, Woolston Manor were always going to be tough opponents. So Chelmsford were prepared for another nail biting encounter. What they weren't prepared for was the standard of golf that Woolston Manor

produced on the day and they won every game to go through to the 3rd round with a 6 points to 0 score line. Everyone involved in the Chelmsford Norman Plum squad were disappointed to have been knocked out this early in the event as they were losing finalists in 2018. Chelmsford Ladies Silver Shield team started their 2019 season with a tough opening match away to West Essex. The Chelmsford team consisted of Kelly Martin (3), Bella Jay (5), Liz Gibson (9), Brenda Skudder (9) and Alison Evans (10). Matches were mostly tight from start to finish. Kelly secured the first point for Chelmsford beating Lizzie Taylor (3) 3&1, Bella lost out to Amanda Hartman (4), as did Brenda Skudder to Julia Brett (13), who seemed to have her putting boots on, swinging the match in West Essex’s favour. Liz Gibson evened the scoreline with a 2&1 win over Ariela Cesena (13) leaving the deciding game to the fifth pair of Alison Evans and Jane Nash (13). Alison held her nerve down the 18th and won 1 up, securing the match for Chelmsford.

SHARPSHOOTERS PLAYDAY

o coincide with the final day of the British Masters, SharpShooters Junior Golf Academy T at Golf World Stansted hosted our very own junior version, organised by head professional Paul Ring and academy coordinator Katie Herlock.

With 45 players ranging from 4-15, playing in red, white and blue, the junior golfers played 6 holes each round our main course or shorter academy course. The juniors each played for a team named after a golfer playing in the Bristish Masters ... with team Tommy Fleetwood taking victory! The event was also a new experience for some of our younger juniors whom had not played on the course in a competition before. The juniors also benefited from junior captain Jack Samuel walking the course with them and being a helping hand. The golfers enjoyed Union Jack themed cakes after their round too with prizes and medals going out to the winning team. Well done to all that played and we look forward to our next PlayDay event in July.

THE BAKER BOYS WIN AGAIN his week it was Oli Baker who returned a nett 67 to win one of Colchester Golf T Club’s oldest competitions the Cooper Bland, first played for 109 years ago. Baker, wrapped up this week’s competition having been the beaten finalist on Easter Monday to his brother Theo in the Elmstead Cup. Starting with a birdie on the first, Baker’s front nine showed nothing of what was to come. Turning on a gross of 40, playing to his recently awarded eight handicap, his golf exploded on the back nine. A birdie on the tenth was followed by a bogey but apart from another bogey on the par four fifteenth his golf was unblemished. The best round of the day however went to second placed Tom Neale (2). Having turned at three under par gross, he held this number ‘till the 17th when a bogey, double bogey finish knocked him back to a gross level par finish giving him a nett 68. All these scores were made on an inhospitable day with a cold northerly wind and little to suggest spring is now here. Long-time leader Jamie Harris (11) took third

Oli Baker.

place on 69 nett with Lewis Barber (4), Joseph Jackson (5), Mark Brown (8), Arian Masud (6), Christos Ryan (5) and Steve Jennings (5) all returning 70s. Oli Baker, the son of the Club professional Mark, got one over his father with his win as during his time as an amateur at the Club he never won this prized trophy nor indeed did his grandfather Alan, another well know member and prolific winner.

STOCKBROOK TOO GOOD ON THE DAY IN SILVER TROPHY he Silver Trophy Team from Stoke By Nayland T Golf Club played their second match, away against Stockbrook Manor. The home team fielded a very strong team, Stoke by Nayland lost by 4.5 to 0.5 points. Margaret Bentley was our only player to half her match on the 18th hole. Sue Latham who had been one or two up all the way was unfortunately beaten two up on the final two holes. Bev Thompson, Catriona Chaplin and Fran Chandler fought valiantly but were all drawn against players with lower handicaps, which was always going to be difficult when playing off scratch.

FIND YOUR IMPACT POINT IN THE BUNKER 1

o consistently hit the ball out of a bunker and be able to judge the distance the ball flies you T need to impact the sand at the same point behind the ball each time. I feel this point is 2 inches behind the ball. But where we position the ball to enable this varies from player to player. If I was to tell you to place the ball at a certain point in your stance for example left heal or left toe I would be wrong as we all need to discover our own impact point. This is achieved by doing this simple test. In Picture 1 I have drawn a line in the sand. The line indicates the point where I would like to impact the sand 2 inches behind the ball. Firstly stand where you feel most comfortable to achieve this and make a swing and impact the

2

3

sand. Now analyse your results. Picture 2 shows the impact to far behind the line. In this instance you would need to move your stance further to the left as I have done in Picture 3 ( I have used a shaft to show the line in the sand) Likewise if your impact point is in front of the line Picture 4 move your stance to the right as I am showing in Picture 5. The ball would be position 2 inches in front of the line Picture 6. It does not matter where in the stance you place it, only that you impact 2 inches behind it. So find your own unique ideal impact position. Have fun

COLES WINS RAIN-SHORTENED ESSEX OPEN IN PLAY-OFF

Robert Coles with Essex PGA Captain Craig Laurence and the Sponsors with the Open Trophy.

hunder, lightning and torrential rain forced the committee to reduce the 99th Essex T Open Championship to 18 holes when it was held recently at Stock Brook Country Club. With generous sponsorship from Endeavour Lotus and a course presented in pristine condition the scene was set for a memorable event and end to the Essex PGA season. However, several groups were still out on the course with a few holes to complete from their first round when the storm hit South Essex and the course was cleared. When the lightning eventually abated, the heavy rain meant that some greens were flooding and by the time the course was clear it was too late to complete the second round. Three players, Robert Coles, Luke Egglestone and Mark Talbott were tied on 3 under par 69

and a play-off was necessary to find a winner. Sadly, there were five players on 2 under par which would have produced a very exciting second round but it was not to be and the playoff began on the par 5 10th hole. All three players secured their pars and moved on to the par 5 18th hole where unfortunately Luke Eggleston left the play-off. Back to the 10th hole and Coles managed a birdie to Talbott’s par which secured him his second Essex Open after a gap of 18 years. This win in the 99th Essex Open was enough to secure the 2018/2019 Order of Merit Title for Robert Coles and he and second placed Jason Levermore will go on to represent the PGA in Essex in the Inter County Championship where Essex will be trying to make it three in a row of National Titles.

KENNEDY WINS ESSEX OPEN CURTAIN OPENER PRO-AM

Essex Golf Club Captains Winning team with Professional Mason Papple and Essex PGA Captain Craig Laurence.

loyd Kennedy from Chelmsford Golf Club showed the rest of the field a clean pair of L heels in the Pro-Am prelude to the Essex Open at Stock Brook Manor with a brilliant five under par 67 which comfortably took the winners cheques by two shots. In second place was the globetrotting Andy Pestell, also from Chelmsford, who showed some of the form he displayed earlier in the year in the Middle East with a solid three under par 69. This was one shot ahead of local Professional Mason Papple and Jason Levermore from Little Channels. In the team event, Mark Bishop from Toot Hill led for most of the day having been out very early in the morning. The team’s score of 83 points (11 under par) was never threatened until almost the last group in the afternoon when Mason Papple from Stock Brook and his team of Stock Brook members beat the leading score by 1 point. Tied third were the teams with Robert Coles from Maylands Golf Club and the Colchester team with Professional Chris Cutchie.

ESSEX SCHOOLS GOLF TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS ssex Schools golf returned for a second year to Theydon Bois Golf Course for their E team championship. The course had dried up nicely after a month of sunny weather and the students were all set to play their best in the first event of the year. The numbers had increased considerably with 18 teams of 3 setting out on a cloudy day. The best score of the day was carded by Ciara Rushmer(12) of King John School, Benfleet who shot 41points. However with two scores from the team of three set to count and the remainder of her team not performing on the day they were to miss out. The team of New Hall School, Chelmsford carried off the Trophy with Oliver Warn scoring 39 and Henry Styles a level 36 and their third player Ben Carson a 31. The Team of St Thomas More, Southend, were close runners up. Their best two players Josh Johnson(39) and Alex Dalley (35), being only

one point behind. New Hall School will now be invited to represent Essex Schools at the National Schools Team Championships at Woodhall Spa in July. We wish them good luck. ELLEN WINS ENGLISH TITLE ON 19TH

ertfordshire’s Ellen Hume is the new English Women’s Amateur Champion, winning a superb final against Lily May Humphreys on the 19th hole at wet and windy Saunton Golf Club, Devon. Despite the most testing conditions the players produced great golf, with the momentum swinging to and fro over the closing stages. Lily May Humphreys (Stoke by Nayland) birdied the short 16th to get back to all square. Hume immediately birdied the long 17 to go one ahead. Humphreys won 18 with a par three to take the game down the 19th. It was there that Hume claimed the title with a steady par, after Humphreys’ approach found a thick clump of rough just off the green. “It’s the toughest match I’ve ever played,” said the 19-year-old from Mill Green Golf Club. “I know that Lily is a great player and I felt I was the underdog going into the match, definitely. “It’s unbelievable, I never expected to win, especially with the opponents I’ve had. The odds weren’t in my favour!” Humphreys, the top seed, was going for her third big title of the month, having already won the Irish and Welsh stroke play championships. But Hume’s confidence was high.

She’s returned from her first year at university in the USA with her game in great shape and underlined that earlier this month when she won the Hertfordshire championship. Earlier this week she had already claimed a series of notable scalps, including those of defending champion Georgina Blackman and Emily Toy, another England international. In this morning’s semifinals she showed her fighting qualities after going four down to Emily Brennan (Trentham) after five holes. Hume began her rally on the eighth and steadily pegged back the deficit until she won 3/1. In the final she went straight on to the front foot by winning the first hole with a par, which she felt was key to her success. “It was crucial to settle any nerves,” commented Hume. She was never behind in the game, although Humphreys pulled her back to all square on three occasions. “Match play is a format I like,” said Hume. “My game was in a good place after my year at college in America and winning the county championship – in exactly the same format – helped prepare me for this.” Humphreys reached the final by beating Jess Baker (Gosforth Park Ladies) 7/6.

PLAYGOLF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP he Playgolf Colchester Golf Club Championships got underway with some T beautiful weather, with the course set to

make the final tee time up with Jack Potter and Jack Blackman. Previous winner, Tom Gale, also had gross 79. Day two got underway with the Also Ran Stableford competition, which went out before field of day two Championship Qualifiers. The humid weather was perfect for golf, with a change in weather, came a change in the field and saw the previous leaders drop off the pace and allow others through. Jack Potter kept his good form going with a superb show in day two, with the thick rough proving a serious issue for some. Potter (17) carded a gross 83 to go with his day one 79 to take third place on 162, narrowly missing out on a playoff place. After a battling display Ben Cosgrove came from nowhere to stake a claim with his day two lowest gross round of 78, matched by Jack Moutell. Cosgrove had a nervous wait for Tom Gale to finish to find out if he’d done enough. With previous winner, Gale, matching his total of 162, the pair went to the first hole for a championship playoff. Cosgrove kept his nerve to win the title at the first playoff hole. The Also Ran stableford competition saw Bernard Martin (23) take the title on 38 points. Tim Martin (19) carded 36 points to take second place from Steve Ainley (22) on 35 points.

championship positions, with the rough allowed to grow to punish offline shots. A large field started day one and the gross results showed up what many expected to see, Conor Garvey taking his sizzling recent form to top day one. His gross 76 saw him take a three shot lead in to day two, to

2019 Club Captain Dean Rainbird (L) presenting the 2019 Club Champion Ben Cosgrove (R) with the champions trophy.

JAMIE COMES GOOD amie Scott put together a round which many J knew he was capable of to win the Essex County Standard Silver Trophy at Colchester Golf Club. Scott constructed an almost unblemished card to record one over par from his five handicap and a nett score of 66 to snatch the trophy from Thomas Pitt (19) and Chris Blakebrough (8) both returning nett 67s in this medal competition. The Essex County Standard Silver Trophy was first presented to the Club in 1984 by Mike Ellis to celebrate the Club’s Silver jubilee. Mike recently passed away. Mike was a stalwart at the Golf Club and, at the time of the Trophy presentation was the Managing Director of Essex County Newspapers. Having previously worked at the Yorkshire Post, Mike was enticed to Essex in the early 70s to run the Evening Gazette, then in its embryonic years.Throughout his career he moved onwards and upwards within the company and the owning group.

Mike was a past Captain of the Golf Club, long time committee member and a Trustee. During the Club’s Centenary year in 1907 he was responsible for the writing of the Club’s history in a book titled The Story of Colchester Golf Club and was honoured by becoming a Life Member.

Match Report

ESSEX v BEDFORDSHIRE Chelmsford Golf Club – Sunday 12th May 2019 he first England Golf South East Group league match of the season took place at Home course Chelmsford on Sunday12th May against the cream of Bedfordshire in our quest for a T hat-trick of North section league titles. On a lovely clear sunny morning with the Chelmsford course looking its usual immaculate self, the 4 foursomes matches set off. First out was Brandon Meads partnering Josh Read from The Rayleigh Club who was making his league debut fresh from his triumph in the recent Keating Trophy. In opposition, Beds skipper Norman Cilliers alongside Seb Lovell. A very close match as expected with no more than 1 hole in it all the way. With the away side 1 up playing 17 and Brandon and Josh staring defeat in the face, the Beds par putt for half, horseshoeing the hole and staying up. All square at the last and with both tee shots making the green, Beds to go first with Norman putting to the hole side for a ‘gimme’ par, leaving Brandon 12ft or so for birdie. With the ball - 48 -

Team; L to R Ross Dee (Orsett), Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill), Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), Josh Read (The Rayleigh Club), Andy May (Capt, Boyce Hill), Callum Pipe (Braintree), Curtis Knipes (Chelmsford), not in the photo Jamie Richards (Abridge).

somehow summoning the momentum to crawl in at the last roll, and a collapsing Beds skipper in disbelief, the game won and an unlikely point on the board for the home side. Revenge, as they say, is sweet, with game 3 of Ross Dee and Jamie Richards 1 up playing 17 the Beds pair chipping in for Birdie - all square playing 18 and with Beds just off the putting surface from the tee, Ross leaving Jamie a tough bunker shot from a plugged ball which he then put to 15 or so feet. Beds chipping on very close for a par leaving Ross a tough par putt to half the game which just ran by. Honours then, even and with each of the 2 remaining matches being shared (wins for Essex pair Ricky Lee and Andy May and Beds pair Hawksby and Manley) the lunchtime score an entertaining 2 all. The afternoon singles kicked off with early wins for Bedfordshire. Seb Lovell against Josh Read and Norman Cilliers beating Jamie Richards with Brandon Meads getting the better of Scott Armitage for Essex. Beds then, leading 4/3 overall and Essex supporters looking very worried. The strength in depth of the Essex team however came through in the end with all of the remaining 5 games going our way. Afternoon result 6/2 to Essex and an overall match score of 8/4 in our favour. A much tighter match than the score suggests and all credit to a very good Bedfordshire side. Thanks given by both County Captains Andy May and Norman Cilliers to our hosts Chelmsford and their members for allowing us the use of the course, it's excellent condition and their hospitality. Next up is the defence of our Eastern Counties Foursomes Title at Seacroft Golf Club, Skegness, followed by the next league fixture away at Frilford Heath against BB&O on the last weekend in May.

U18 Inter Counties League

ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE v MIDDLESEX Langdon Hills Golf Club – Sunday 12th May 2019 he Essex U18 Boys’ opening match of the T season was against Hertfordshire and Middlesex at a bright and breezy Langdon Hills Golf Club. With a dry course exposed to the cool breeze low scores were at a premium, but nevertheless some good golf was to be seen for those spectators clad in enough layers. During the past couple of seasons Harvey Sullivan has proved himself to be a reliable source of points for the Essex Boys and this match was no exception as he disposed of his two opponents picking up maximum points. Reigning Boys Champion Josh Gray also came through the contest undefeated although he had to go down the 18th to share the points with his Hertfordshire opponent. Performance of the day was undoubtedly by Harry Wood from Boyce Hill who beat both of his opponents on the 13th winning by 6&5. Against their Hertfordshire opponents the matches of both Jake Wells and Will Dove went to the wire with the outcome in doubt right to the 18th hole, with team Captain Will also having to contend with his opponent Reis Suart holing his tee shot on the 173 yard 5th hole. Nice hole in one! As always, our thanks go to our hosts Langdon Hills Golf Club for the use of their splendid facilities and providing hospitality to players, officials and spectators.

Ping Unveils G410 LST Driver ing has expanded it G410 driver range with the release of the G410 LST, a high-MOI P driver designed to produce low, stable spin with the shot-shaping control provided by the company’s movable-weight technology. On sale from May 30, and with a recommended retail price of £450, the G410 LST shares the movable-weight technology found in the G410 Plus model. The centre of gravity is slightly forward of the G410 Plus in all three positions (draw, neutral, fade), leading to spin reduction of 200-400 rpm, depending on shaft choice and a golfer’s launch conditions. Each weight position shifts the CG location by 1/10inch in each direction from neutral, influencing left or right shot direction approximately 10 yards (20 yards of correction between Draw and Fade settings). At 450cc, the G410

LST driver features a more rounded, pear-shaped design and combines with more efficient Turbulator technology for advanced aerodynamics, leading to increased clubhead speed. The clubface sits slightly open at address and the score-line pattern frames the impact area to aid alignment. The unique forging and patented heattreatment process of the T9S+ face powers a thinner, hotter impact area that is precision machined to elevate ball speed across the entire face for more flexing and faster ball speeds. The forged face and the internal geometry of the head are instrumental in producing the powerful feel and sound of the driver. A lightweight, adjustable hosel expands from five to eight settings, offering loft (0, +1⁰, +1.5⁰, 1⁰, -1.5⁰) and lie adjustments (including up to 3⁰ flatter than standard) to optimise ball flight. The stock shaft option is Ping’s Alta CB Red Red (Soft R, R, S, X), while four highperformance shaft options are available at no upcharge and ensure a shaft-fitting solution to match the launch conditions of all golfers.

MCILROY MAINTAINS TOP SPOT IN SPORTING RICH LIST

ory McIlroy has been named the UK’s richest young sports star for the third year running in R the Sunday Times Rich List, increasing his fortune by £28m to £138m, in an all-male list dominated by Premier League footballers. The 30-year-old from Northern Ireland topped the 17-strong list ahead of Gareth Bale, whose fortune grew a £20m to £94m. Bale moved up a spot because Andy Murray did not feature on this year’s Rich List, as only UK-based sports stars aged 30 and under are eligible for inclusion. McIlroy enjoyed the biggest boost to his personal fortune of all the stars on the list, with his

tournament earnings bolstered by an estimated £25m annually from commercial deals. McIlroy has $100m, 10-year contracts with Nike and TaylorMade, as well as deals with Omega watches and NBC Sports. In March, McIlroy won the Players Championship to join Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to win four majors and 15 PGA Tour titles before the age of 30. The only other non-footballer to feature on the Sunday Times Rich List was the boxing world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, whose wealth rose £14m to £49m, ranking him fourth. - 54 -

BAILEE’S BEST ne of Colne Valley Golf Club's promising youngsters, 11-year-old O Bailee Taylor, put some of the club's best players in the shade with a sparkling performance in the club's May stableford. Playing off the difficult white tees, he amassed 40 points including an impressive birdie two at the 11th hole and was rewarded with a handicap cut from 17 to 15. He was three points clear of runnerup Mark Loring, and Roger Warren was third with 36 points on countback from Daniel Fraser. Young Bailee also scored well the day before when he finished third in a Junior Trophy competition with 41 points behind winner Thomas Cooper with an outstanding 49 and Mia Barningham with 45.

ast year the Society of Essex Lady Captains AGM and Spring Meeting at Maylands Golf L Club had to be aborted, in the interests of the safety of their members, due to extreme weather conditions. It was fitting, therefore, for the Society to return in May for their 65th AGM & Spring Meeting 2019. The AGM went off very smoothly with Dot Greaves (Forrester Park) taking over from Jan Collier (Forrester Park) as President and Maggie Stevenson (formerly North Weald) being elected as Hon Treasurer. Trophy were Mary Graham (Benton Hall) & Judy Podd (Forrester Park). After a delightful dinner President Dot Greaves presented Jo Davies with a bouquet of flowers and voucher for her many years of service on the Committee in a variety of capacities including a long stint as the Societies Merchandiser. Jo thanked the Society for her gifts and said she had enjoyed her time on the Committee and the many days playing golf at events, she wished the Society well for the future. Dot also presented Jan Collier with a bouquet of flowers and gift thanking her for her sterling work as President for more than a decade and in her previous roles on the Committee. Jan recounted some of her early memories of Society days and wished Dot the best of luck in her new role. Sadly there were many cancellations on the day requiring a major rejig of the tee sheet. Despite the rain, gusting winds, thunder and a flash of lightening all but one of the groups got round the course. Whilst many ladies found the conditions difficult, some thrived returning great scores in the 4BBB drawn competition off full handicap. Fourth to six places were decided on count back with 37 points. In third place with 38 points were Georgina Penketh (Crondon Park) with Sandra Griggs (Maylands) who had to stand in as a player at the last minute. 2nd place was secured with 41 points by Nicki Mckemmi – Watson (Crondon Park) & Harriette McGinlay (Romford). In first place with 43 points winning the Iris Stranks

Our grateful thanks go to Maylands Golf Club for hosting the event and all the staff on the day. Special thanks to Pauline Huckins Lady Captain of Maylands and her many helpers on the day. Despite the weather it was a great day and a very friendly affair.

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

Good Luck in Round Four of the League Phase all clubs can keep track of the regular updates from us during the season: Facebook: DByon’tthe forget, Twitter: time you are reading the latest edition of Essex Golfer, clubs will have concluded Round www.facebook.com/thejubileecup/

Check out the full picture of matches at the following URL – the current view at time of writing on 28th May is shown below also, including the full picture of Round 3 completions. www.jubileecup.com/matches2019/draw3.hml

At time of writing the update, we had only three results pending from Round 3 matches. Match results will be continually updated at the link above, and as teams are allocated winning and drawing League points, as well as “hole difference” scoring, the League tables can be seen at the following link: http://www.jubileecup.com/matches2019/divix19.html As you can see from the tables, strong performances so far from four clubs who have achieved 3 wins from three matches – well done to 3rd Round Matches all played Crondon Park, Manor of Groves, by 26th of May 2019 Braintree and Playgolf Colchester. Final League round matches to be played therefore are shown on the left. Of course individual player and double results will be showcased on the Order of Merit tables also. Further consistent displays of quality play in evident, as we have gone from 14 players with full points, up to 24 players with full marks From last month’s top 3 only Crondon’s Steve Rattray remains in this month’s top 3, with Jason from Garon Park and Costas from Chigwell now in pre-eminent position - however, close on their heels are many others with Dan from SBM, and Woolston Manor Captain Zulfi creeping into the Top 5 as shown below.

Links for both charts can be seen at the top of www.jubileecup.com/matches2019/draw1.htm With many clubs having completed two of their matches, the League positions are starting to add up – see www.jubileecup.com/matches2019/divix19.html Further excellent Jubilee Cup spirit seen, even if I do say so myself, at the Forrester Park v Notleys match, when I was due to play Bryan Browning in the first singles game of the day. When the first tee time came around Bryan was nowhere to be seen…apparently English cricket was having its day, and he plum forget! Rather than claim any form of point for the match, and with the view that Bryan was within easy reach to get to the club we bumped our match down to the last singles group to go out – and a jolly game we had together, despite some serious showers, and a very equitable half point each after 18 holes. Obviously nothing in the rules about this at all, and us Committee members pride ourselves in knowing that it is events like this that happen each week, that makes our competition the best and friendliest for mid-handicappers in absence. And to be clear, this magnanimity did not stretch to promising to keep Bryan’s name out of this match report. Sorry Bryan, and thank you for a great match! To reiterate, everything you need to successfully arrange and play your matches is on our website, including full contact details for the opposition under “Competing Clubs”, and key information in terms of the Rules of the 2019 competition. www.jubileecup.com/matches2019/rules2019.pdf For all clubs please keep tracking our updates: See us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thejubileecup/ Follow us on Twitter: @jubilee_cup The Jubilee Committee are always looking for volunteers to help us out – please contact myself or one of the Committee at the Contact details on our Homepage (top-right). www.jubileecup.com Please do LIKE /FOLLOW or subscribe to our Facebook and Twitter sites: Twitter (@jubilee_cup) Facebook page (www.facebook.com/thejubileecup/) Please LIKE us so we can keep you abreast of developments on a more regular basis than the excellent Essex Golfer! All the best
