Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa Selected by European Tour for First Stage Core View from the 18th tee Gainsborough Course at Stoke by Nayland towards the hotel and clubhouse.
S
toke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa has pipped a number of prestigious golf courses to become the latest venue to host European Tour Qualifying School First Stage. Set in East Anglia on the Suffolk/Essex border, the 300-acre site boasts two championship courses, a four-star hotel, luxurious Country Lodges, and a renowned fruit farm where the Peake family created the famous Copella fruit juice range. The picturesque resort, which houses one of only two Lee Westwood Golf Schools in the UK, has experience of holding top quality golf tournaments, having hosted the PGA Seniors Championship in 2006 and 2007, numerous Euro Pro Tour events, the European Challenge Tour from 2010-2012, and the European Senior Tour in 2014. The club will also be hosting its 5th consecutive international LETAS championship from 28th – 30th September this year. European Tour hopefuls will take on the testing Gainsborough Course which, at 7,134 yards, will require length and accuracy off the tee from September 19-22, 2017. Competitors will face a stern examination on the par three 18th, with nerves of steel required in order to drive over a lake to reach the green situated in front of the hotel and clubhouse. “We are delighted to announce Stoke by Nayland as the latest addition to the 2017 Qualifying School schedule,” said Mike Stewart, Qualifying School Director. “After witnessing first-hand the outstanding facilities both on and off the golf course at Stoke by Nayland it was an easy decision to ask Susanna and her team to join the Qualifying School
network. We must say thank you to everyone at Stoke by Nayland, in particular Managing Director Susanna Rendall. “She and her sibling family directors have shown that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree as they have continued their parents’ good work by making Stoke by Nayland the outstanding venue it is today. I’m sure our players will enjoy the fruits of their labours during the First Stage Qualifier in September.”
The 2nd and 9th fairways of the Stoke by Nayland Constable Course in stunning Constable Country.
Susanna Rendall, Managing Director of Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, said: “We are all very excited about the prospect of welcoming the European Tour Qualifying School and some of the world’s most talented golfers to Stoke by Nayland for the first time. “The event has created a tremendous buzz of expectation amongst both the Stoke by Nayland Golf and Leisure members and our staff here, and we look forward to supporting it in any way we can. It will also be a pleasure for us to introduce the European Tour to this stunning part of East Anglia and we hope that the players will enjoy their visit to beautiful Constable Country.” -2-

A New Beginning for Spanish Golf ? E
-4-
Last night, I think, I wish, that bad run was ended. Last night, a guy who has teed off without a break on every Thursday of a Major week for the last eighteen years, said, “Enough.” Last night, a player with whom I share a year of birth and love for the game, fought until the end and achieved something that no Spaniard had achieved in almost two decades: being the best of the best on the, for many people, best golf course of the world. Last night, Sergio García won The Masters and in doing so surely started a new wave in Spanish golf. Now we must strive to enjoy it and work for it. Thanks, Sergio.
SERGIO GARCIA (GETTY IMAGES)
verything in life goes in waves. Like tides, like the wind, things happen and then stop happening. Before 1975 golf in Spain was an absolute minority sport, an activity reserved only for a few well-off families, perhaps sparking some mention in the society pages of a gossip magazine but never a headline in the sports section of a national newspaper. Everything changed with the emergence of Seve Ballesteros, the much-missed genius of Pedreña, the pioneer who showed the Spaniards what a ‘green’ was, and a ‘fairway’ – and above all, a ‘rough’ – and who allowed Spain to enjoy twenty glorious years during which were collected three Claret Jugs and four Green Jackets, thanks also to the courage of Jose Maria Olazabal. The emergence of Seve, rather than changing Spanish golf, created it. By the time, in 1999, ‘Txema’ (Jose Maria Olazabal) got his second Masters title, the Spanish golf panorama was changed beyond recognition. The country had been filled with golf courses – and many more would be created – the Spaniards were playing golf, they knew about golf and they had even hosted a Ryder Cup. But that was the end of the ‘wave’. During the last eighteen years golf in Spain has grown, it has strengthened, become a popular destination for golfers in Europe, and generated a handful of excellent professionals who succeed in numerous male and female circuits. But it has been stuck. It did not finish consolidating itself. To top it all off, the economic crisis that unleashed in 2008 put a cap on the progression of federated players (once we were numbered at 340,000, now it is around 260,000), and in a sense golf returned to having that image of being the ‘sport of the rich’ that has always crippled it to the south of the Pyrenees. Eighteen very complex years on, a negative gust that at some point would have to end.

COLCHESTER
I
'm sure like us we all enjoyed the 'Masters' and while not really minding whether Justin or Sergio won, it was great for Sergio who has waited a long time for a major (72 appearances!). With the weather being so kind in the first 4 months of this year (where I play the irrigation system had been on during April) we have seen this season up and running much earlier than in previous years (remember those very wet winters!). For us this has meant a record number of customers (even after 23 years in business), record sales and hopefully a record number of happy customers!! A big thanks for that. Now onto this month. Over the Bank holiday weekend (Friday 26th May until Monday 29th) we have some big offers for you. While limited in sizes we have over 200 selected pieces of Nike men's clothing at 50% off, we have a Srixon woods deal (a great performing wood) that is a fantastic offer, All Nike and Adidas shoes will be 25% off*. With every electric trolley purchased we will be giving 2 FREE accessories (worth up to ÂŁ35), Srixon AD333 and Soft Feel men's and ladies balls at BUY ONE GET ONE HALF PRICE and finally again for this weekend only, buy any set of custom fit clubs via our Skytrak simulator (please bring in your current clubs in to compare) and receive one dozen Srixon Z Star balls FREE OF CHARGE! Hopefully with our massive choice, great deals and just as important our experienced team of staff that have your interests as their number one priority, we will continue to be a key supplier of your golfing needs. Our Skytrak club selector is also playing a major part in this service. Thanks for your support and business. Look forward to seeing you soon.

Little Channels Golf Course Test Your Skills!
L
ocated on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Little Waltham, the recently refurbished Little Channels Golf Centre is a friendly, family-oriented 9 hole pay and play club nestled on the outskirts of Chelmsford. With a 22 bay floodlit driving range, a putting green and a pitching and chipping green with three bunkers, the practice opportunities at Little Channels Golf Club are probably the best in the Chelmsford area. Little Channels is inviting visitors and new members to come along and test their skills with an offer of four ball for the price of three until the end of July. In addition, the club has introduced Range Membership offering the benefit of frequent range use at significant savings. For £250 per annum, Range Membership will include unlimited range balls, as well as unlimited use of the putting green and short game area. Jason Levermore, PGA Professional Golfer and a familiar face at the golf club says, “Little Channels is a stunning 9 hole pay and play golf course and we welcome everyone to come and test their skills. We are committed to helping
people of all ages and abilities get into golf and have recently introduced a number of new membership categories to suit all types of golfer”. He adds, “The Little Channels course is a good test for the better standard of golfer but also fair for the beginner. It has five par 4’s, four par 3’s and measures 4887 yards with a par of 32. With the addition of alternative tee positions, this effectively offers an 18-hole course with a par of 64. Added to that, the tree plantations featured throughout the fairways, and the internal out of bounds area, make the challenge to break par even greater. It truly is a golf course that requires every club in the bag!” With short game facilities and excellent additional amenities like the wedding venue and restaurant, Little Channels is set to become a bigger part of the community and a warm welcome awaits visitors and new members alike to test their skills at the recently refurbished Little Channels Golf Centre. CHIPPING DON'T CHANGE THE TECHNIC, CHANGE THE CLUB.
F
rom around the edge of the green when you chip it is much easier to be versatile with the club selection to judge different distances than make different length swings with the same club. Picture 1 shows the length of my chipping backswing and Picture 2 the length of my follow through. They are about the same length and the pace of swing that you cannot get from a picture is rather metronome, the same pace back and through.
1
Picture 3 shows how with different lofted clubs, how the ball will roll out a different distance using the same swing. If you are looking for consistency with your chipping try using the same swing but different lofted clubs. It is much easier to learn only one swing. Good golfing Gary.

SHOT 3 CONTROL THE SPEED OF YOUR PUTTS
T
he third shot in how we are going to go four shots lower after course management is controlling the speed of your putts ... 3 putts happen generally when you get the speed of your first putt wrong.
PLAY GAMES ON THE PUTTING GREEN The best way to work on your speed control is to play some fun games on the putting green. Try these games.
focusing on your distance control. Aim to try all kinds of distances and breaks.
THE LONGEST PUTT ON THE GREEN On the putting green find the longest putt you can and hit 5 balls with the aim of getting the ball within 3 feet of the cup. If you can deal with the longest putt all the putts that are closer should be easy to judge the speed. 20-30-40 DRILL - Again on the putting green mark out with a tee a putts from 20 feet (8 Paces), 30 feet (12 paces) and 40 feet (16 paces) from a hole.. Work on calibrating your speed from these set distances paying close attention to your speed control. ON THE COURSE - If you go out for 9 holes and the course is quiet. On each green try 3 different putts from 20 to 40 feet on every green - 18 -

T
he Spring Meeting was held at The Rayleigh Club and our sincere thanks go to Lucy Clarke, PGA Professional, Lady Captain Tracy Sutton and her lady members plus all the staff for all their hard work in making the day run so smoothly. We had a fantastic turn out on this lovely spring day, although a little chilly, with an amazing 42 girls attending, 22 for the 18 hole Stableford and 20 beginners/improvers for our first ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ on Tour event of the season. Very well done to all that attended and especially the prize winners with some fabulous results and handicap adjustments, all in all a great start to the new season.

CARDIO
Is Good For Golf ... I
s Cardio any good and does it have any functional carryover to golf? In my opinion, no. As a golfer you are walking the course, sometimes carrying a bag, sometimes not, either way its long duration cardio. If I had to advise what cardio should be done I would say brisk walking ... the perfect carryover to golf. I would also sometimes put HIIT training into my golfers programme to boost fitness and increase power. What is HIIT training? High Intensity Interval Training. Quick, intense bursts of exercise with timed rest periods and a number of sets. HIIT training is fantastic for building fitness, building lean muscle and increasing power if carried out correctly. I like to use TABATA for HIIT training, its really fast workouts (as little as 8 mins) so very achievable in a busy schedule! Look up Tabata training and give it a go. A lot of people think that if you are just strength training you are not “fit”.This is not true at all, strength training gets you puffed and 100% increases fitness if programme design is right.
Schedule is very important. Out of season, I would schedule my golfers to train 4-6 times per week with a mixture of HIIT, brisk walking, flexibility and strength work. In season this completely changes ... training reduces to 2-3 times per week, brisk walking goes, HIIT training drops to 1 session per week and strength 2 times per week. Flexibility however goes up to as much as possible (everyday some stretches should be carried out). So, overall, stop doing hours on the cross trainer, rower, stepper and treadmill and get a good variation of brisk walking, HIIT training and strength training with flexibility on board.Think of functional carryover with everything you do ... ie; will this exercise directly help my golf? If the answer is no, don’t do it!

Top Man Sam at Playgolf
S
am Southernwood (13) returned to form with a bang, carding a six under par nett 64 (gross 77) to win the second Playgolf Colchester Club Championships qualifier. Southernwood went out in 42 and came back just one over the back nine with a card that was based on seven pars and
topped with three birdies, including a two on the par three 16th, also earning a well-deserved shot handicap cut to play off 12 next time out. Stalwart campaigner, Mick Seaman (9) was the division one runner up with his card of 11 pars and par three birdies to total net 67 (gross 76). Paul Addison (8) took third place with his card of net 68 (gross 76) consisting of 11 pars and a par three birdie two, again on 16. Paul Marsh (14) won division two with his card of level CSS, net 68 beating James Will (14) in second place, who carded nett 71. A trio of players carded nett 72, requiring countback to separate Steve Turner (15) Graham Adye (17) and Andreas Fantousi (17) with Turner’s better back nine taking the decision. John Jackson-Smith (20) carded the round of the weekend, seeing him return to the winning circle with a huge score of nett 62. His seven pars and par four birdie saw him earn a two-shot handicap cut to ply of 18 next time out. Ashley Yates 18 took second place on countback from in-form Trevor Hollingsworth (18) after both carded net 68.
Playgolf Seniors
I
n-form Greg King (19) followed up his recent Spring Cup win to take the honours in the Playgolf Seniors stableford competition. He won on countback in division one from Alan Cole (22) with both recording 38 pts. Close behind in third place was Steve Turner (14) on 37 points. Division two was headed by Des McCarron (26) with 35 points one ahead of the Seniors ViceCaptain Robert Few (26) in second on countback from Allan Kitching (25) in third with both recording 34 points. Sleeves of balls were won by Alan Burke and Steve Turner for their birdies on the 16th and 3rd holes respectively. Playgolf Seniors visited The Essex for the first
leg of their inter-club friendly match, played to Hambros scoring system, falling short by nine holes, which they hope to turn round in the return leg later in the year. In a busy week, the Seniors team played their first round of the Essex Golf Union Seniors knockout competition in a home tie against a friendly and spirited Chingford team, led by seniors captain Michael Johnson. The home side, took advantage of local knowledge, winning the first four singles matches. Then came a fight back by Chingford to narrow the gap. However, Playgolf got over the line first, eventually taking the honours by six and a half points to four and a half points.

Why Does My 5 Wood Go As Far As My 3 Wood?
T
his is a question I get asked a lot … although the answer is fairly simple there are a few different aspects we need to take into account. Firstly, let’s look at it from the golf balls perspective. Whatever way you look at it the golf ball does not know what club it’s being hit with. All it really knows is how fast the head is travelling and and what angle the face of the club is as it get’s hit. This means that it does not matter wether you are hitting a 3 wood, 5 wood or even a 7 iron if the club speed is the same and the loft is the same the ball goes pretty much the same distance. Some golfers will find the 5 wood a little easier to strike due to a slightly shorter shaft than the 3 wood. Secondly, we need to talk about the height of the shot. Think about throwing a ball, to throw it as far as possible you need to get the ball to fly high in the air with a flight that would resemble a rainbow - if you then tried to throw the ball the same distance but at waist height the ball would hit the ground much earlier, yes it would run a bit but not always.Your 5 wood has more loft (angle)
on the face so it’s easier to get in the air, couple a higher flight with a slightly better strike and you are onto a winner. Last but by no means least is the golf ball itself. Over the years the ball has changed without a big song and dance being made (funny really, an extra 3 yards on a driver gets pages and pages of coverage but pretty much a complete reversal of a golf balls characteristics hardly gets on the page … that’s the golf industry in a nutshell - distance sells). Anyway, enough of that … the ball that we now play wants to spin (backspin) less. This is fine as long as the ball is hit high enough in the first place - too low and the ball can’t keep in the air. So, where do we end up? Well, a 3 wood with a slight miss hit and a lower flight won’t go as far as a 5 wood - unless you are capable of Defying Gravity (apart from a witch at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London I don’t know many who can) so it all starts to make a bit of sense. Answer? Simply play fairway woods with more loft … 5 woods, 7 woods and 9 woods are great clubs and a lot easier than popping a hernia trying to get your 3 wood airborne.

C
n the 26th June 2017 James Levick and Danny Hill of West Essex Golf Club will be attempting to complete 100 holes in a day which is a walk of approximately 22 miles! Starting at 4.50am and planning to play until 9pm, we're asking for support to help raise our target amount of £3000 for EDS UK. EDS is a condition that Danny’s wife and daughter live with affecting the connective tissue within the body, and many other parts of the body internally and externally. This causes intense pain from the joints, body, and internal organs. Unfortunately this has now led to Danny’s wife losing her mobility. For more information about the 100 holes, the charity or our fundraising please contact James Levick on 020 8529 7558 ext 4 or james@westessexgolfclub.co.uk www.ehlers-danlos.org
oger Wright tucked up Colchester Golf Club’s first major competition of the year when he won the Cooper Bland Cup last weekend. In Colchester’s oldest competition, first presented in 1910, five handicapper Wright was just two over par to return a nett 68 and take first spot from four others all just one shot behind on 69. A birdie on the second hole set Wright in good a good place for his round. Turning on the ninth, one over par, it was all to play for. Two more bogeys did not deter him and a solid par on the eighteenth saw him safely home. Second place was awarded to Michael Mayes (12) after the Roger Wright countback with Jim Wilkinson (9) third. Stuart MacAulay (5) and Kyle Appleton (12) made up the four all returning 69.

Colne Valley Captains Day
O
n a glorious spring day 78 Players took to the field in order to raise money for the captains chosen charity – Essex Air Ambulance. Then men’s competition was a tight affair with Alister Bailey’s 36 points only enough for a 3rd place finish. Callum Pennock was 2nd on 37 points whilst the eventual winner was Robert Wallace with a superb 38 points. The ladies comp was even closer than the men’s with Sue Petchy securing a 3rd place finish on 36 points. The winner had to be decided on
countback with Dianne Jeggo and Alessandra Callow both scoring 37 points with the later coming out victorious thanks to her 17 points on the back 9. Both captains thanks all members for their generosity on the day as £1’222 was raised for The Essex Air Ambulance. Earlier on in the week Tony Beadle won the men’s seniors monthly medal beating Phil Carr on countback after both players returned a nett 68 whilst Malcolm Waite was 3rd with a nett 71.

Close Win for Stoke by Nayland Back L to R Matt King, Ian Thompson, Robbie Benson, John Smith, Richard Bland, Chris Major. Front L to R Andy Higginson, Gary MacKay, Martin Cotton, Jamie Mardell.
S
toke by Nayland started the 2017 Leslie F Wood Championship with an away win at Colchester Golf Club. The Leslie F Wood is an Essex County competition played with a ten man team whose handicaps are all over 7.5. The matches are all played off scratch with five foursomes in the morning and ten singles in the afternoon. The morning scores were very tight with each club gaining 2 ½ points. Stoke’s first pair out lost but Martin Cotton and Ian Thompson levelled the scores. The remaining three matches all finished all square. After five singles Stoke by Nayland had only added one point to the morning scores courtesy of John Smith. However the middle order rallied with three wins. Last man out Gary MacKay also put a point on the board. With one match still on the course the score was 7 ½ points to 6 ½ points in favour of the away team. So it was all down to Matt King. He was all square with the 18th hole to play giving the scenario that a win for Colchester would have meant that the play off players would have had to go down the first in a sudden death finish to the match.
Unfortunately Matt’s drive went right with the Colchester player in the middle of the fairway. Colchester were then on the green for two. Matt somehow managed to reach the right side of the green with a difficult chip in front of him. Ian Thompson, the play-off player, was preparing to go down the playoff hole when Matt King produced a stunning chip within inches to halve the hole and give Stoke by Nayland an 8-7 win. Full Results: Foursomes: Andy Higginson/John Smith Lost 1 Down, Martin Cotton/Ian Thompson Won 2/1, Chris Major/Jamie Mardell A/S, Rob Benson/Richard Bland A/S, Matt King/Gary MacKay A/S SBN 2 ½ points – Colchester 2 ½ points Singles: Martin Cotton Lost 6/5, John Smith Won 6/5, Andy Higginson Lost 3/2, Chris Major Lost 3/2, Jamie Mardell Lost 2/1, Richard Bland Won 3/2, Rob Benson Won 2 up, Ian Thompson Won 2/1, Matt King A/S, Gary MacKay Won 4/2. Birdies and Eagles at St Osyth as Youngsters Open National Golf Course Project
St Osyth, Opening day (from left) Paul Bertram, Deputy Head at St Osyth, Brendon Pyle, Chief Executive of the Golf Foundation and Tom Hide of the Coastal Golf Academy.
E
agles could become a familiar sight in Clacton-on-Sea thanks to a school golf project which combines fun, sportsmanship and learning. Recently, children from St Osyth C of E Primary School teed-off on the first finished course of ten commissioned school ‘Tri-Golf ’ courses in England and Wales to be built in 2017. Deputy Head Teacher Paul Bertram is a big believer in the benefits of sport for young people and, after children from the school were excited to see birdies and bogeys on a trip to the European Tour’s British Masters golf tournament in October, Paul learned about the potential to receive funds from national charity the Golf Foundation to build a Tri-Golf course for St Osyth. It is one of 10 schools to be selected for such a project this year thanks to funds from a legacy by supporter of the charity Mr Anthony Slark. The Golf Foundation is working with teachers all over the country and has shown through TriGolf in the classroom or playground that the sport can offer valuable ‘Skills for Life’ for youngsters, while also helping with literacy and numeracy learning as part of the curriculum. For the recent grand opening, the young pupils wrote to parents and other invited guests, prepared the competition with the PTA, helped with refreshments and manned each hole to welcome
the adults as they joined the children for the first tournament on the new links. Titleist, the Golf Foundation’s Official Golf Ball Partner, provided golf balls for all involved to inspire them further. Paul Bertram said: “Thanks to the support of Tom and Daisy we now have our very own TriGolf course which is very exciting! We believe sport can really help youngsters in teaching resilience and perseverance and golf is great for this as you can never get it right first time. “We also believe that golf can help pupils on the autistic spectrum because of its disciplines in repetition and the focus needed. Thanks to this support from the Golf Foundation we now look forward to holding regular events in which children from other schools can come along and enjoy a warm welcome at St Osyth.” Children who start their golf at St Osyth will be linked to the Coastal Golf Academy, which represents Frinton GC, Millers Barn Golf Park, Harwich GC and Colne Valley. PGA Pro Tom Hide said: “The Coastal Golf Academy works with more than 10 local primary schools at present. Pupils from all over the area can now enjoy some golf at St Osyth and boys and girls who want to take the sport further are sure to receive a warm welcome from members and staff at our local golf clubs.” www.golf-foundation.org

Working Towards a Single World Handicap System T
he R&A and the USGA are working with golf ’s handicapping authorities to develop a single World Handicap System for the game. More than 15 million golfers in over 80 countries presently have a handicap, a numerical index long used as a measure of a golfer’s potential skill level. Handicaps are currently delivered through six different systems around the world. The aim of the proposed handicap system is to adopt a universal set of principles and procedures that will apply all over the world. An extensive review of existing handicap systems administered by Golf Australia, the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) in Great Britain and Ireland, the European Golf Association (EGA), the South African Golf Association (SAGA), the Argentine Golf Association (AAG) and the United States Golf Association (USGA) has been undertaken. Golf organisations from different parts of the world have also been engaged with the current handicap authorities for the past two years to help shape the proposed system, which takes into account the many different golf cultures and most common formats of play. Research conducted to date has also reviewed systems and best practices inherent to handicapping, such as course rating and administration. A joint committee led by The R&A and the USGA has been formed, including representatives from each handicap authority as well as the Japan Golf Association and Golf Canada. The joint committee plans to announce its proposals later this year.
Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “We have been concerned for some time that many golfers find the handicapping landscape to be complicated and can be frustrated when it is not always applied in the same way in different parts of the world.
“We are working closely with the existing handicapping bodies to benefit from their insights as we try to formulate a system that will be easy to understand and can be applied consistently on a global basis. We very much appreciate their support for this initiative.” Mike Davis, Executive Director and CEO of the USGA, said, “One wonderful aspect of golf that separates it from other sports is the opportunity for players of differing abilities to play on an equitable basis through handicapping. With one global system, golf courses will be rated and handicaps calculated in a consistent manner everywhere in the world. Removing borders to provide an easy way for all to play together is great for the game and golfers everywhere.” www.randa.org www.usga.org

ESSEX COLTS v ORSETT GOLF CLUB Orsett Golf Club – Sunday 2nd April 2107 The second fixture of 2017 for Essex Colts was against Orsett Golf Club, the winners of the 1916 Thornton Cup. This annual friendly match, with 12 players on each team gives both sides the opportunity to try new players and pairings for the forthcoming season. Regrettably one Colt member had to pull out at short notice due to illness and even more regrettably one was a “no show” on the morning. The first space was admirably filled by Ben Humphrey (Chelmsford) who is only four days short of being a Colt and will prove a great asset to the 2017 under 18’s team. Orsett players came to the assistance $ of the missing twelfth man by phoning around, and Orsett $ -"$.$&/"!-member, Kane Lynn-Jones arrived on the tee in time to tee !""!#$,&' 67$,689$ 0-$&12344$%5 $ @6$>ABC off in the final match. Orsett then made it a great reversal finishing 4/2. There were several very good scores from both teams. Colts Callum Piper & Ben Horton won their match 5/3, and George Leversuch &Josh Cardy won 4/3. However Orsett won the G$ >$ remaining four matches with excellent wins of 5/4 from Chris Dreher & Darren Spencer, and 5/3 from Paul King and Cassidy Steffens. 0 The afternoon singles started in a similar fashion. Notable Brendan Meads 6/4, Josh Cardy 4/3 and Jordan Slater 4/2. The final match of the afternoon was halved. Giving an afternoon result of G$BI>$ Colts 7½ Orsett 4½. C$BI>$ :;

The Cheshunt Salver
ESSEX UNDER 18/16 v HERTFORDSHIRE UNDER 18/16 Upminster Golf Club – Monday 3rd April 2107 Historically the early season contest between these two counties for the Cheshunt Salver have been closely fought affairs, but this year’s annual event at Upminster Golf Club proved to be a very one sided encounter. Hertfordshire arrived with as strong a team as they have fielded for many years which included England Internationals Harry Goddard and Danny Daniels. By way of extreme contrast Essex had a number of leading absentees due to coaching commitments. With the morning foursomes going very much in Hertfordshire’s favour the challenge of pulling back the deficit in the afternoon singles proved rather too much for the Essex boys. Although Harry Robson managed to finish the day with a 100% success and Alex English went home undefeated, other heavy losses served to illustrate the gulf between the two sides on the day. For the Essex team this was a “bad day at the office” and our players are very much better than the result suggests, but as always there were plenty of lessons learnt highlighting areas to work on before the next county match. Our thanks go to Upminster GC for providing a course in excellent condition and food and sustenance for the teams and officials throughout the day. - 44 -

County Match for the Dudley Smith Trophy
ESSEX PROFESSIONALS v ESSEX AMATEURS Frinton Golf Club – Thursday 6th April 2017 The day started early with clear blue skies and a surprising absence of the usual strong breeze associated with this annual fixture. Frinton golf club looked immaculate in the spring sunshine as the cream of Essex golfers both Pro and Amateur prepared to do battle. The Professionals fielded a very strong team in an effort to reverse previous year’s fortunes, demonstrated by the inclusion of European Tour player Matthew Southgate. The Amateur line up was a mix of youth and experience with 5 players from the County side and 5 from the under 18’s The morning foursomes produced some superb golf aided by greens that wouldn’t have been out of place in any tour event, hard, fast and true with puts rolling in from everywhere. The amateurs edging the morning with a 3 to 2 advantage. Special praise to the young pairing of Joshua Read and Cai James ! taking Matt Southgate and Rhys Piper to the 17th in a ding dong battle. With amateur expectations high the afternoons singles again produced some spectacular scoring with a glut birdies and eagles highlighted in the Southgate/May match with Matt being 4 up after 9 and 4 under par. The Pro’s were not for lying down and ran out winners of the singles by 7 points to 3, however credit to the Amateurs for taking 6 of these matches to the 18th. The Pro’s winning back the trophy with an overall match score of 9 to 6. A super day on a course in top condition. Thanks given by county captain Jay Beisser to both Frinton for their hospitality and ! to the Professionals for giving up their time to teach the Am’s a ! thing or two. Roll on next year ! Thanks to Frinton Club Captain David Joshua for presenting the trophy to winning Pro Captain Mark Talbott. Phil Hulse County Team Manager !

Annual Friendly Match
ESSEX UNDER 16’S v BEDFORDSHIRE UNDER 16’S Dunstable Downs Golf Club – Monday 10th April 2017 This year’s match was played at Dunstable Downs GC in Bedfordshire a U16 Inter Co new venue for all of our team and one that is infrequently used by our unties Friend ly ESSEX v BE DFORDSHIRE hosts. Ess ex As the title suggests the course rolls through the Bedfordshire Bedfordshire Downs, making it susceptible to strong wind at high points. For the time of year the course was in generally good condition and provided a fair challenge in dry, gusty conditions. The match was played over 5 x 10 holes foursomes (the course is unbalanced thus the 10th is a natural finishing hole) followed by 10 singles after quick light lunch. Bedfordshire fielded a side which contained six strong low Essex Bedfordshire handicappers and four players up to low double digits however all were very competitive. The morning foursomes very much went the way of Essex and at lunch we enjoyed a healthy 3.5 to 1.5 lead. At the request of our hosts the afternoon singles was played in handicap order the result being we lost three of the first four matches admittedly to some inspired putting on early season greens but still very much ‘lessons learnt’. The result however was never in doubt as there were strong Essex 9 6 Bedfo rdshire performances at the top of the order from James Butler and Jake Wells. As expected we took care of the lower order the stand out win being by Matt O’Connor (7&5) in our 5.5 to 4.5 winning total. Final match score; Bedfordshire 6 – 9 Essex. Our thanks go to Dunstable Downs for hosting the match and the excellent Bedfordshire officials. Lee Shaw Team Manager FOURSOME

Seniors County Team Friendly Match
ESSEX v SUFFOLK Romford Golf Club – Tuesday 18th April 2017 For their annual friendly to start the season off, Essex were on home turf at Romford Golf Course. The weather was a repeat of last year, when the sun was out it was a pleasant day but when it went in it was bitterly cold. Whilst we expect to win this fixture it throws up some interesting matches and still needs to be won. The match result does not tell how even all but a few of the matches were. It was nice to get Mark Whitten (now 55) playing for the County again and he showed what an asset he will be to the team in grinding out a win against Suffolk regular Roger Taylor. Other remarkable scores were Chris Rate who ended with a half being 3 down for much of the match. Also Michael Partridge managed a half after being down to Dick Barton. - 46 -

THE KEATING TROPHY Boyce Hill Golf Club 8th April Qualifier • 22nd & 23rd April Matchplay Finals 76 Entries experienced a delayed start due to thick fog for the Keating Trophy Qualifier at Boyce Hill on the 8th April. The half an hour delay could have been considered well worth it as once it had cleared the sun shone for the remainder of the day. The Essex Golf Union’s first Championship of the season saw the 76 competitors play 36 holes of golf over a very challenging and wellpresented Boyce Hill Golf Course. Only 16 places were on offer in the Matchplay Finals that took place on the 22nd & 23rd April also hosted by Boyce Hill. The strong field found the morning round tough, with only one player to break par, Alex Woodward (Boyce Hill Golf Club) with the day’s low round of 66 (-2). This score ensured a twoshot lead over Jay Beisser (Essex County Captain & The Rayleigh Club) who managed a level par 68. Callum Newton (Orsett Golf Club) managed to card a 69 (+1) which saw him take 3rd place on his own going into the second round. The afternoon saw many of the field improve on their morning Finalists Andy May (Boyce Hill) & Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) scores, with two on the back of the 18th Green following the Final. players breaking par, Curtis Knipes (Abridge Golf Club) shot a 67 (-1) along with Ben Tobin (Basildon Golf Club) who managed one better matching Woodward’s morning score of 66 (-2). Overall, the scoring improved slightly in the afternoon, as often the case as the players knew what to expect from their morning’s experience. Curtis Knipes posted a leading score of 137 (+1) which was just enough, thanks to his afternoon round to hold off Ben Tobin by 1 shot who finished on 138 (+2). Third was Callum Newton on 140 (+4) who remained consistent on the day following his 69 with a 71. There were four players that could not make the Knock Out stage due to other commitments which meant that 20th place managed to secure a spot in the Final Knockout stages. On Saturday 22nd of April Boyce Hill welcomed the 16 finalists whose matches commenced at 8am. The first match out between Jason Renton (Basildon) & Callum Newton (Orsett) of resulted in Jason beating Callum 3&1. Second off were Boyce Hill members, Andy May & Adam Soilleux, as expected, a great match between the two took place which saw Andy May come out a 2&1 winner. Jamie Richards (Abridge) beat Billy Mason (Maldon) 5&3. This would mean Jamie’s PTO

afternoon match would be against Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford) who managed a great win over Joshua Read (Three Rivers) 4&3. Next out was a duo from The Rayleigh Club, Barry Medcalf and Jay Beisser, Beisser secured a spot in the Quarter finals by beating Barry 5&4. Past County Champion Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill) was beaten 3&2 by Charlie Day (Abridge). Tom Neale (Harwich and Dovercourt) squeezed to a 1up victory over Christopher Chaplin (Rochford Hundred). Last match out in the morning was Ben Tobin (Basildon) versus Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), another fine match would result in Lukas winning 2up. Saturday afternoon saw the four quarter final matches played, May beat Renton 5&4, Richards beat Yeomans 2&1, Beisser beat Day 5&4 and Warren victorious over Neale 2&1. The Sunday had some great golf in store as all four of the remaining competitors have represented Essex in County Teams, and so tight matches were witnessed by several supporters who had made their way to the course to see the semi-final & final. Home support undoubtedly benefiting Andy May in settling his match over Jamie Richards 2&1. Jay Beisser continued his good run of form beating Lukas Warren 2up. The final of the Keating Trophy saw two County Players battle it out over what was now their sixth round of golf in the competition. The match provided some excellent golf from both players, with the supporters getting involved with some encouraging cheers at various stages in the match. After six rounds of golf, ample birdies and numerous fist pumps Andy May & Jay Beisser both stood on the 10th Tee one under par and level in the match. Jay won the 11th to go 1up, both players birdied the 12th, but then Jay gave his advantage back on the 13th as the match went back to Level. The 14th saw another birdie from Jay giving him the edge with just four holes to go. The next few holes were halved in par and on the 18th Jay went through the back of the green and Andy hit the green giving himself an outside chance of birdie. Andy did his very best to make the two narrowly missing leaving Jay with a pitch County President Roger Walmsley congratulating Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) after his victory. and a putt for the match and the Championship. Jay played a nice recovery shot to about two and a half feet. 2016 Order of Merit winner Jay Beisser was relieved to see his putt drop for par, immediately turned to Andy and the pair showed what great spirit the match and championship had been played in. Jay Beisser was presented the Trophy by President of the Essex Golf Union Roger Walmsley and offered his thanks on behalf of all the players to the Essex Golf Union & Boyce Hill Golf Club for arranging the event. - 48 -

I
have and will be continuing to run a series of short game clinics during the year for both men and ladies, one of the areas I have focused upon is putting. I would like to provide you with a simple putting tip which I hope will assist with your game. My objective is to simplify the stroke breaking down the barriers suggesting that putting practice is boring and next time it will be better! Unfortunately without change your putting is unlikely to improve on a regular basis. I really enjoy the group coaching format of the short game as the results are fairly instantaneous with knowledge of what to practice, why and how becoming apparent during the session. I remember fondly working with the late Harold Swash both during a Trade show and as a player whilst competing on the Ladies European Tour. Harold was one of the first respected and instrumental putting coaches in the UK assisting Padraig Harrington amongst other European Tour players. He equipped me with some of the key components of the putting stroke some of which I now pass on when coaching my clients. One question I am generally asked is “Where should my eyes be during the stroke?” many player’s say they focus on the golf ball during the stroke… I personally would not recommend following the ball with your eyes and therefore your body. If we focus on the golf ball this can lead to head and lower body movement which increases the likelihood of the putter head rotating producing a closed position at impact which will almost certainly cause a missed putt to the left. One
great attribute all great putters possess is stability and balance in the lower body during the stroke. So, next time you are on the putting green try focusing upon a very specific point such as a darker or lighter blade of grass in between the putter head and the golf ball throughout the stroke. I personally find focusing upon something other than the ball removes the technical anxiety and negative thoughts often associated with short putts.
FOCAL POINT
The ground will definitely not move but a golf ball will ... Therefore focusing upon a nonmoving fixed point minimises body movement which is often a significant factor for those missed short putts where the precision at impact is more exaggerated. I hope you enjoy practicing this simple putting tip, please let me know how you get on and enjoy walking on the green with renewed confidence. Happy Golfing Sarah

New Compact-Folding PowaKaddy Trolley is Simple 2-Fold
O
Weightless Wind Protection from Galvin Green
L
eading premium technical performance brand Galvin Green continues to revolutionise golf clothing with the ‘virtually weightless’ BOW Shell Layer jacket that features exclusively in its 2017 Part One apparel range. Like all Galvin Green garments, the BOW is expressly designed for golfers by golfers, offering exceptional freedom of movement throughout the swing and protecting the wearer against windchill out on the course. The remarkable garment weighs just 107 grams – slightly more than the weight of two golf balls (92 grams) – while being totally windproof, water repellent and highly breathable due to its high-tech GORE® WINDSTOPPER® Active Shell fabric construction. An ultra-thin WINDSTOPPER® membrane is laminated to a lightweight abrasion-resistant textile layer. It creates a versatile, microporous garment that allows water vapour to pass from within unhindered to give the jacket its breathability and keep the body at an optimum performance temperature. Designed with a high collar and fitted cuffs to protect the golfer from the stiffest of breezes, the BOW is also extremely packable due to its ultra-light weight and naturally thin material. Available in three colour options – Deep Ocean blue, Black and Iron Grey – the BOW can be worn in conjunction with Warm, Cool or Base Layers as part of the pioneering Galvin Green MultiLayer Concept that allows serious golfers to layer garments for optimum comfort in the conditions they’re set to play in. www.galvingreen.com
ne of the most simple, ultra-compact-folding electric trolleys is ready to take the golf market by storm, with the announcement No.1 brand PowaKaddy is launching the stunning new Compact C2. After more than two years’ development by PowaKaddy’s UK based expert designers and engineers, the all-new Compact C2 introduces an innovative simple-2-foldTM system that allows the sleek trolley to be set up and packed away in just two simple folds. Following feedback from avid golfers and retailers, the revolutionary trolley has been designed to help save time, as well as space, with the easy folding system taking just two to three seconds to operate. At 9.8kg, the Compact C2 also offers one of the lightest options in its product category. “The Compact C2 is without doubt the easiest compact trolley to use that we’ve ever produced – the simple-2-fold™ system is unique to a model of this size,” said PowaKaddy CEO David Catford. “It’s relatively straight forward to manufacture a trolley that folds to a compact size, but the real challenge is to ensure this can be done without adding too many folding steps for the golfer. “The Compact C2 is easy to move around thanks to an integrated carry handle,” adds Catford. “We believe it is the perfect solution for the modern day golfer. It fits incredibly neatly into the smaller car boots you see these days and, with such a simple folding mechanism, the golfer can get from their car to the tee in record time.” Whilst the Compact C2 provides an incredibly simple compact-folding mechanism, it doesn’t compensate on the number of features on offer to the golfer, who also benefits from a threeyear warranty. A full colour widescreen display is a notable highlight, as is the USB Charging Port that facilitates the charging of GPS devices and smartphones. Adding to the list of impressive product features is a special compartment for balls, tees and pencils, which sits conveniently above the trolley handle for easy access. There is also an integrated scorecard holder and a soft touch handle that can adjust to three different positions to fit the height of the golfer’s hand. The Compact C2 is powered by PowaKaddy’s innovative Lithium battery – with 18 and 36 hole options both backed by full five-year warranties. PowaKaddy Lithium offers the thinnest Lithium option on the market, whilst an integrated Battery Management System protects the life of the battery and provides up to 5 times longer lifespan than lead acid equivalents. www.powakaddy.com

he Wilson Staff Triton was the winning creation from reality TV show Driver Vs Driver that featured on the Golf Channel over a seven-week period at the end of last year. It challenged designers from outside the golf industry to find a radically new model and compete for a $500,000 winning prize. Showcasing revolutionary designs from around the United States, the initial triwinged shape of the sole plate and the three sole weight ports was created by University of Cincinnati graduate and industrial designer Eric Sillies. He then perfected the design with help of the Wilson Golf LABS team over a 16-month period before claiming his prize. The Wilson Staff Triton combines four elements of technology aimed at providing golfers with a new and exciting driver experience: • Two interchangeable sole plates – one titanium and one carbon fibre – for significant launch and spin changes. The 22-gram titanium sole plate is optimised for players requiring a mid-to-high launch and low spin while the nine-gram carbon fibre sole is aimed at players who prefer a more penetrating ball flight and lower spin; • Visible Swing Active Technology, the 1:1 revolutionary crown alignment aid is designed to make hitting the sweet spot more consistent, improving ball striking and accuracy; • Four movable weights – 2x2gram and 2x6gram – can be placed in 6 unique combinations to fine tune and perfect ball flight; • Fast Fit technology enables players to make quick adjustments by eliminating the need to remove the club head from the shaft. The Wilson Staff Triton driver comes in 9°, 10.5° and 12° lofts with the Aldila Rogue Black (Regular and Senior flex) and the Aldila Rogue Silver (Stiff and Extra Stiff flex) shafts as standard stock options. Other custom fit shafts are available. The 10.5° and 12° lofts were adapted slightly to meet the USGA conforming status and the removable titanium soleplate was shaped to reduce the rear edge by a few millimetres. In addition, the club’s 12-gram weight was removed from the adjustable weight kit. All three lofts now conform to USGA standards.

THE RULES OF GOLF The new rules of golf at your fingertips
The best choice is “Golf Rules Quick Reference”. The multi award-winning, ring-bound book has already sold more than a million copies and contains the answers to all the rules questions that commonly arise on the golf course. It is intended to be used while on the course, therefore it has a practical pocket-sized format, uses hard-wearing, water-repellent paper and has a sturdy protective cover. As every rules situation is illustrated (more than 180 illustrations), players can find the right solution straight away. To sum it up, this little gem belongs in every golf bag. £11.95. Huge Leap in Traffic As HowDidiDo’s New Website Fulfils Golfers’ Needs
T
he first weekend of the golf season resulted in a huge year-on-year increase in traffic for Europe’s largest online golfing community, HowDidiDo, with more than 45,000 unique users visiting the revamped website in just two days. HowDidiDo launched the new-look website and a new smartphone app – available for both iOS and Android – at the end of 2016. The app is now fast approaching 100,000 downloads and was the number-one free sports app in the Apple Store chart for a number of weeks in late 2016. This has resulted in a substantial rise in the number of mobile visits – with an increase of more than 16 per cent year on year for the weekend. But the most staggering figures come in the number of unique users for the two-day period which rose an astonishing 63 per cent year on year, from 27,905 to 45,463. And user-sessions resulted in an equally impressive rise of more than 72 per cent to 64,431. And, with the average session now lasting almost four minutes, it’s clear that golf club members across the UK and Ireland have responded positively to HowDidiDo’s significant investment, as spokesman Barry Dyett explained. “We have been really encouraged by the data we have seen for the new site this early in the season,” he said. “We wanted to provide what club golfers required and these figures, even at this early stage, suggest a wholly positive response. And, clearly, the app is proving very popular given the increase in the number of mobile users. “We will not, however, rest on our laurels. We will continue to listen to our users and our clients, the golf clubs, and where we feel we can fine tune things further we will endeavour to do so.” Dyett added: “The number of unique users has increased significantly – which suggests the appeal is now greater – while the number of sessions is also showing a considerable upward trend. Therefore, more users are logging on more often and viewing further content for longer. And they are returning to the site more often. “This trend is probably supported by an increase in mobile log-ons. More frequent visits, by more visitors, are often a result of increased mobile functionality.” The relaunched website enjoys a fresh look,
smoother navigation and a new social-media influenced timeline. In addition, it is now more mobile friendly offering an even greater depth of golfing data that is also available through the app. With around half-a-million club golfers, from HowDidiDo’s 1,800-plus registered clubs across the UK and Ireland, using the website regularly, it has also been upgraded at the back end, to provide faster response times and enhanced security features. HowDidiDo holds data from in excess of 53 million rounds of golf, along with the handicaps, results and scores of more than 1,300,000 UK golf club members, with more than 547,000 golfers currently using the website. More than 1,800 golf clubs currently use the HowDidiDo system – courtesy of their use of Club Systems International software. HowDidiDo allows members to analyse their game and compare performance with other players, at their own club or across the entire HowDidiDo network. As well as developing one of the most active sports websites in the world, HowDidiDo also powers the highly acclaimed HowDidiDo Matchplay, a UK singles and pairs competition which culminated in a grand final in Morocco in February. And the annual Titleist Order of Merit, the largest golf event of its kind in the country, now sees more than 20,000 golfers take part each year making it one of the UK’s most subscribed sporting competitions, behind only events like the London Marathon and Great North Run. In 2016, the grand final took place at four-time Ryder Cup www.howdidido.com venue the Belfry.
