Billericay Golfer Wins American Golf Long Drive Championship and Qualifies for World Finals
F
riday night (19th August) saw an incredible display of power hitting as Billericay trader Lucas Dornan became the American Golf Long Drive Champion, winning a hamper of products from Garmin and a place in the World Long Drive Championship. Lucas, 31, came into the final as one of the pretournament favourites after progressing through the two qualifying events with ease despite never having entered a long drive event before. The member at Stockbrook Manor Golf Club proved his worth throughout the early rounds dispatching a number of huge drives, including one 383 yard monster, though having made it through to the final match Lucas struggled for consistency in a tense encounter. The pressure of the final, under the spotlight of Sky Sports cameras, was intense and with 5 drives from 6 completed Lucas didn’t have a legal ball in play. His opponent, Dave Evans from Bedford, had previously recorded 364 yards from his first set of 3 but Lucas managed to send a 368 yard rocket out with his final drive of the competition. With 3 balls left to win, Dave struggled for control and
having consistently hit over 370 yards all competition, failed to record a legal drive in his final set. “I’m delighted to have won the American Golf Long Drive Championship in my first ever Long Drive event,” commented Lucas. “I knew from looking around the swing speeds of the other competitors that if I hit it well I'd be among the leaders. I’d clocked 152mph during the day so I knew I was swinging it fast but was just missing the middle of the club, so it was a relief when I managed to get a legal drive on my last hit in both Semi Final and Final. From qualifying in store through regionals and to the final, I’ve had a fantastic experience and can't thank American Golf and Garmin enough for giving me the chance to go on and compete with the best in the world.” The Long Drive Championship is a vital part of American Golf ’s drive to get more people out playing golf more often. 2017 will see a series of free events added to the current event schedule when the Scratch and Individual Championships, Family Cup, Pitch & Putt Championship and Adventure Golf Championship will be added to the Junior Championship, Long Drive, 9 Hole, Seniors and Ladies.

his year it was the turn of Essex County to host the East Region Girls Championship which was held at Gosfield Lake GC. Our thanks go to Tony O’Shea and all his staff who were so very helpful and made the day run so smoothly. Also a special thank you to the Lady Captain, Jenny Starr and her fabulous ladies who couldn’t do enough for us and gave up their day. There were 26 entries from the top girls in the East Region, Essex, Herts, Beds, Cambs & Hunts, Suffolk and Norfolk. The format was a 36 hole Medal off scratch with trophies for U18 and U15 gross scores and also prizes Net scores too. The weather was glorious, not a cloud in the sky; however, the strong wind and the fast greens caused problems for some but despite this, a great day was had by all, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful but testing course.

Costly Bar ‘BILL’ I
t was a costly double celebration for Bill Tyzack when he captured the seniors’ August Medal with 42 stableford points at Woodford Golf Club. For the Chingford surveyor got a hole-inone at the 9th to seal his victory by one point. Also he did the traditional duty of buying all his fellow golfers a drink when he got back to the clubhouse. The shot that got him the ace and effectively won him the competition was an six iron off the tee on the “over-the-pond” 165-yard 9th. It was his third hole-in-one in a long golfing career; he joined as a Woodford member in 1982. Once a single figure golfer, he has recently been playing off 17, but this win has knocked his handicap back to 15. Put into the shade by this performance were 2014 club captain Zekia Alsanjak and John Smith-Pryor, both on 41 points, but with
Zekia taking the runner-up spot on a count-back. The best first nine score of 29 points was recorded by Smith-Pryor and, of course, no-one could better Tyzack on the nearest the pin, although a fair few went close. Woodford beat Maldon GC by 4-2 at Woodford to retain the David Webb Trophy in its 9th year of play. Thirty-three golfers competed in this annual match played alternatively at either club. Nick Rowe won nearest the pin prize, just beating Stephen Bland (both Woodford) and Alan Syrett (Maldon) The trophy was donated while he was still alive by David Webb, a member of both clubs. He fought valiantly against the cancer disease, which finally killed him in 2009, aged 39. With “brilliant support” £505 was raised for Barts cancer charity, said Roy Webb, David's father and a past president of Woodford GC.

F
Find the Shot
ind the Shot an interesting phrase from back in the 70’s, and in our quest for an ideal balanced swing plane it is as true today as it was then. But what does it mean? Quite simply there is an ideal place for the shaft to be halfway down the downswing, not only does this guarantee the centred hit on the ball and able to apply compression to the ball, but also have a major influence on the direction the ball flies. Picture 1, the top of the backswing with the plane line in. My task from this point is to make my transition down and onto this plane line; this is achieved through a combination of the arms swinging down in the correct sequence with the body. My ideal downswing plane is shown in Picture 2. Picture 3 and 4 on the other hand have gone a little wrong, firstly Picture 3 the most common of downswing plane errors and what you hear as referred to “Over the top.” The club shaft is higher than the plane line, this is a slice
1
swing in the making. Picture 4 the less common under plane, from here there is a choice of shot, straight block to the right or trying to save this swing a rapid rotation of the clubface and a hook, neither is to helpful. To work on this some mirror work is always good just practicing moving the club into a more ideal downswing plane, finding out how it feels and what sequence is required to achieve this. Why not spend a day with Gary PGA Advanced Professional at Forrester Park, AM full swing, short game and putting, PM on the course with Gary member of the Senior Masters Tour and Senior Golf Circuit. Next date 20th October includes all coaching, golf, coffee and lunch. Limited to 6 pupils £50 per person. Call 07801 428 174 to book your place, payment required at time of booking. Here are a couple of simple ideas. A pendulum will take the same time to swing back and forth, within reason, irrespective of the length of the swing it takes. A good image to have is the swings at the park.

The Basildon Folly – England’s Largest Putting Green
T
he old clubhouse at Basildon Golf Course stood on what is now a large waste area between the car park, the current clubhouse and the leisure centre next door. An area of just over three-quarters of an acre in size. It was almost perfect for adventure golf, however it was decided from the outset that adventure golf would be the wrong mix to add to this superb golf course. There is definitely an element of overt commercialism that an adventure golf course can bring to an established golf facility. This is a very positive factor for a family golf centre, but for a golf course striving to re-establish itself as a top venue it was thought that this would have the opposite affect. Also there were substantial issues with parking. Putting, nevertheless, is a vital part of building golf for the 21st-century: putting is what unites all golfers, of all ages, of all abilities. There is hope for everyone on the putting green. Many of us started as toddlers with a borrowed or shortened putter, scraping the ball towards the hole by the seaside on a putting layout of some description. There are many stories of the commercial success of the Himalayas putting course at St Andrews in Scotland. It takes several hundred thousand pounds per annum and provides for an exceptional experience for visitors, local residents and families to all participate in the most accessible of the golfing arts. Since the squeeze was put on Council’s leisure budgets, most local putting greens have closed, which is a great shame as these were often the catalysts for young golfers to take the next step. However, adventure golf courses have been extremely successful and Golf Features have been proud to encourage the promotion of such ventures at golf facilities across the country over the last 14 years. The question was whether the economic success was solely down to the fact that they use artificial grass and have a theme, or could a similarly interesting grass layout also make economic sense? PGA Professional and Basildon Director, Colin Jenkins added: “Having had substantial experience with adventure golf and encouraged everybody to consider it for their golf facility across the UK and
beyond over the last dozen or more years, I felt duty-bound to establish a proper grass putting green given the outstanding opportunity we had at Basildon. I wanted the surface to be undulating and exciting for the putter and this flew in the face of almost all golf green design.Yet the most memorable putting greens across the world of golf are the ones with bumps and swales and hollows and humps - ones that require imagination and vision to negotiate. These are the ones that bring out the child in us all. Who can help but giggle when some famous golfer putts into a bunker on the 17th at St Andrews. This hardly ever happens on a parkland course. The Himalayas at St Andrews works on many levels, but one of the most important ones is that the putting itself is fun. Fun in putting consists of undulation, unpredictability and a multitude of options for those playing the game. If only golf course designers took this a little more to heart. The best putting green that I have seen in recent years belongs to presidential hopeful Donald Trump, and was designed by Martin Hawtree at Trump International, Aberdeen. It is huge and has all sorts of bumps and swales - it is a fabulous course to enjoy the delicate art of putting. The course has just opened, less than 10 months after it was seeded with prices for non-season ticket holders set at just £4 for adults and £2 for children under 18. This entitles someone to putt all day. Use of the putting course is also included in any green fee paid on that day. Do Beginners Benefit From Fitted Golf Equipment? A
common question I get is that do beginner golfers really see any benefit from fitted equipment. For me the answer is a simple one YES! But then I’m sure you would expect me to say that so, I will explain. I always think of a new golfer as a blank canvas, they have no bad habits and have every chance of developing good technique. There is no ‘sorting out’ the problems so progress can be achieved very quickly as long as there is nothing standing in the way. Let’s look at each individual component of a golf club and see how it can help or hinder a new golfer: CLUB HEAD: This would boil down to head style, weight and lie angle. With regards to style this would be a larger forgiving head, weight would be very important in that the golfer would need to be able to support the club throughout the swing and as I seem to talk about all the time the correct lie angle would promote a good swing motion with less compensations required making up for the club being incorrect at address. GOLF SHAFT: For me weight and flex would be important here. Many budget box sets use cheap heavy golf shafts which although these would suit some people they would not suit everybody. Intricacies of ball flights through shaft profile (what the shaft is designed to do i.e.higher or lower) would obviously not be important here as the golfer would not be at that stage yet. GRIP: This is basically size and texture. Starting with an incorrect grip size hinders the correct positioning of the hands. Although texture is a personal thing as the grip is the only communication with the golf club the correct texture will give the player confidence when holding the club.
SET MAKE UP: In my opinion to many new golfers start with too many clubs, a smaller set normally gives a new player all the options they need to play without causing confusion in club selection. A full set of irons and woods makes no sense at all to me as many of the clubs will travel similar distances due to the skill level of the player. That being said I do believe a new golfer should get out on the golf course as soon as possible and I also believe that the driver should be introduced very early on in a players learning and not put on a pedestal that ‘one day you will be able to hit one’. I see no sense in a new golfer hitting seven iron after seven iron to try to reach the green when a little more distance will make the game far more achievable. In a nutshell I would always rather see a player with fewer clubs in their bag that help them rather than more clubs that just make it difficult. This does not always mean you would have to buy the latest models - very often models that are a few years old can be picked up for a very reasonable cost and with fairly inexpensive modifications can be made to suit the player perfectly.

Build Strong Foundations
I
see very regularly golfers joining a gym, to improve their golf, and chose exercises that just will not improve their golf! I believe In building strong foundations. Once strong foundations are built you are a much more stable unit in the gym and within your golf game. Always follow functional movements, the following are 6 that I like to use with every client to get the body functioning properly and getting the muscles working as a team. Below are the 6 functional movements and an example exercise for you to try, please look up each exercise on YouTube and make sure you have your technique perfect: PULL -
1 arm standing cable row or 1 arm resistance band row PUSH - push ups – these do not have to be full, you can lower to push ups off the knees TWIST - my favourite exercise for golf here is all types of wood chop ... reverse wood chop, horizontal wood chop, normal wood chop. BEND - for a golfer I feel this is essential! The bent over cable or resistance band row I use a lot.
LUNGE - walking lunges PRONATION I am a big fan GRIP of BARBELL GAIT - my preferred movement here is sprints ... this is an advanced exercise so to lower the movement I would basically recommend walking! Functional movements strengthen the core, improve and strengthen the posture and get the body working together hence building a stronger more stable golf swing. WALK FORWARD

“Beef ” is a Massive Hit at London Golf Show E
uropean Tour star Andrew ‘Beef ’ Johnston won himself a host of new fans at last weekend’s London Golf Show at Bluewater – not only among the general public, but also within the golf industry.
‘Beef ’ remained at the show much longer than was anticipated, because he was “having fun” and he was able to visit many of the show’s stands where he was only too happy to pose for the obligatory ‘selfie’ with both exhibitors and visitors to the show. The 27-year-old, Johnston, who is based at North Middlesex Golf Club, found time to be interviewed by Sky Sports News and local media, as well as holding a question-and-answer session with a dozen or so golf journalists. He said: “The show’s been really good; they’ve got some great stands. It’s really practical, which people love. They want to try out different clubs and different stuff, so the more practical it is the more they enjoy it. “It’s great to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters here too.You want to get as many kids involved as possible –if there’s no kids coming through, there's no future for golf. They’re the most important thing, you needthem to play and to develop and they’ll fill up all the golf courses around. “They’ll then get their kids involved and that’s the cycle you need. And shows like this help to get them enthusiastic about the sport and keep them interested.
“I'm just having fun here; it’s nice having fun and meeting new people. It’s great to be able to send people home with a smile on their face – that’s important to me. I always love watching the trick-shot boys. I always go home and try to hit those shots and I can’t ... I can’t hit one on the volley! They’re amazing and really cool. I’ve enjoyed the whole show.” During his visit, the Spanish Open champion faced a series of questions on the event’s stage from youngsters who had participated in a preshow online campaign. One asked him if he knew how many tees he could hold in his impressive beard and the affable Londoner even allowed them to try to find out. He wasn’t planning on going home to better the result, although he laughed: “I think I’ll wait until next year and maybe I’ll come back and we’ll have a really good go at it.” An estimated 12,000 visitors – audited figures are still to be confirmed – attended the show over its three-day run. Event director Simon Jones was delighted with the feedback he had received from both visitors and exhibitors and confirmed that the London Golf Show would return for its 13th outing in 2017. He said: “The response to the show has been fantastic from visitors and exhibitors alike. And having ‘Beef ’ here all Friday afternoon really excited everybody. “He was incredibly generous with his time, signing autographs, posing for pictures – with stand-holders as well as visitors – and generally helping people enjoy themselves. There aren’t many top sports people you can imagine who would allow kids to insert golf tees into their beard! He is such a refreshing change from the norm and his personality is a shot in the arm from which golf can only benefit. “We’re already looking forward to next year’s show and we hope both ‘Beef ’ and this year’s many exhibitors will return in 2017.” Launched in 2005, the London Golf Show is the UK’s longest-running consumer golf show and was designed toappeal to golfers – and potential golfers – of all ages and abilities.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR LANDING AREA G
olf is a unique game where the varying course and weather conditions have a huge influence on the shot selection and execution. We as golfers have to adjust accordingly which in itself is a skill which we learn through practice and experience. After another very wet Summer suddenly we are having to adjust to the firmer often unpredictable bounces. For many of us these conditions call for the lower chip and run shot which yields a greater chance of confidence and success. It is this judgement which if we have an
understanding can really assist with reducing our overall scores. The table below is a very rough guide which I hope will help you understand the rough landing and roll out percentages with the most popular chipping clubs. I have added my own thoughts on a scenario when to use the various clubs to provide a practical example. Some players I coach prefer to use one specific club for their “finesse” short game shots where we alter the trajectory which is a completely different area but another option. Rough landing and roll out for the “finesse” or chip shot.

T
he 3rd Summer meeting of the Society was held at Brentwood Golf Club. This was restricted to 64 players and with a number of cancellations in the run up and 2 no shows in the morning, a total of 62 ladies teed off on the day. The course was in good condition and whilst some of the holes are relatively short, bunkers and other hazards are strategically placed making it a good test for the ladies. The weather was good for golf and with the dry conditions, the ball was rolling so. Everything was set for some good scores in the 4BBB competition off full handicap. Out of the 31 pairs, over half scored 40 or more points. 3 pairs scored 45, but in third place with 46 points were Ann Atkinson (Romford) & Claire King (Crondon Park). In second place with 47 points were Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) & Yvonne Davis
Frinton). With late cancellations and no shows, the Lady Captain of Brentwood had to play at the last minute. Using her knowledge of the course Gill Stallard (LC Brentwood) & Lynne Kirkham (The Warren) amassed a fantastic 50 points to win the day and lift the Friendship Salver. Thanks to Brentwood Golf Club for hosting the event, to Gill Stallard and Sharon Glover for helping with the preparations and on the day. The last of the Friendly matches this season, against Suffolk Lady Captains, took place at The Rayleigh Club on Thursday 12th August with 12 players from each Society taking part. The ladies took to the course, which was in excellent condition, from 12 noon The Essex ladies were able to put their home advantage to good use and emerged clear winners with 5 matches to 1. The day finished with a delicious summer buffet, and fruit crumble. Thanks to the Rayleigh Club for hosting the match and putting on a great spread at the end of the day. Pat Flynn (Match Organiser) wishes to thank all the Essex Ladies who played in the Friendly matches this season, especially those who stood in at the last minute. Both the semi finals and final of the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy took place in August. The semi final was held at Boyce Hill. The first match was between Margaret Bentley (Stoke by Nayland) and Rosalyn Calton (Chelmsford). Both got off to a good start but Ros soon went ahead. Margaret put up a good fight, but Ros

The second match between Jane Wright (Channels) and Karen Rosenbloom (Abridge) was a battle royal, very closely fought with Jane eventually winning on the 17th hole 2 and 1. The Semi Finals (to be played over 3rd and 4th September) have been drawn and will be played on neutral venue with the remaining 4 teams – the Committees commiserations to Burnham on Crouch, Stableford Abbotts, The Rayleigh and Woolston Manor who lost out at the Quarter Finals. Each club now only has a maximum of two matches/games to play for their team players, and this really drives into focus the Order of Merit standings now. Looking at the singles we have eight players on a full 4 win points from teams progressing through to the Semi Finals, with Bentleys’ Andy Weller heading the list with a single hole difference. Bit not far behind are a further 6 lower handicappers who could be in contention. Full list of all singles OOM is here www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/playsing.htm Likewise in the Pairs player OOM, whilst Peter Law from the Burstead heads up the current board with the narrowest of margins, that team will not progress, consequently the opportunity is open for a further nice higher handicapper players to complete for the final honour in the remaining matches. Check out full standings here: www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/playdoub.htm As we close off towards the final match of the year, my view also turns towards the 2017 competition. The Jubilee Cup is open to Essex all clubs who would like to enter a team of 6 singles players and 3 pairs of 4BBB competitors (please check our competition entry rules: www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/rules2016.pdf ) and I am already receiving in membership forms for next year. Essex Ladies “Harris Bowl” B
usy few days for Clacton-on-Sea Essex Ladies Golf Union “Harris Bowl.” On Friday 5th August, we had a home game, this time against the highly competitive and glamorous ladies from Stockbrook Manor. Last year’s winners, they proved a very strong side, and unfortunately we suffered a defeat, losing by 3 matches to 2. This week has been a very busy one for our Harris Bowl Team on Monday, we travelled to the Burstead Golf Club where we had our third win of the season beating them 3 matches to 2. After this match, we had a total of three wins in our league and two losses, however, all the results were very close. Our final match was at home on Tuesday against Langdon Hills. Again a highly competitive side who had won the trophy in 2014 and were keen to beat us, however, with the help of our two young guns leading the field, we had a superb 4 matches to 1 match WIN a fantastic achievement. Team Captain Sonja Strutt thanked her team of Denise Pink, Di Kedge, Club Captain Gilly Cullen, Angela Barratt, Fiona Cope, Julia Hewett, Janet Hiller, Katy Yates and Faye Trigg.

Lily May Scores a Runaway Win Over Mixed Field Lily May Humphreys with U16 boys'winner,Will Hopkins (right) and U14 boys' winner Dominic Clemons.
G
irl international Lily May Humphreys finished six shots ahead of the mixed field at the North of England U16 stroke play championship at to claim her third title of the year. Humphreys, who was 15-under par at Pannal Golf Club,Yorkshire, also became the first girl to win U16 and U14 trophies in the same year – and she equalled the course record with her second round of seven-under 67. The 14-year-old, from Channels in Essex, adds these titles to her earlier wins in the Fairhaven Trophies and the English girls’ U16 open championship. “It’s my best season and I couldn’t really have made it any better,” she said. She added: “It was good to beat all the boys! I was really happy to do that.” There were three girls among the first five players and their strong performance was highlighted by the fact that, for the first time, the final group on the last day was made up of two girls and one boy. Humphreys finished with a total of 281 and was followed in the scoring by her two playing partners on 287: Will Hopkins (Belton Park) was the U16 boys’ winner on one-under par on the boys’ card, and fellow international Amelia Williamson (Royal Cromer) was girls’ runner-up, scoring nine-under par on the girls’ card. Next were Luke Bartram (Rossendale) who was runner-up in the U16 boys’ event on 291 (+3), and
Hannah Screen (Berkhamsted) who was third in the girls’ event on 293 (-3). Meanwhile Dominic Clemons (Gog Magog) won the U14 boys’ title on 299. All six players are member of England Golf squads. Humphreys’ overall score was her lowest yet over four rounds, and her bogey-free 67 was a personal best. “I really wanted to go low and that made me very happy,” said Humphreys. The course record was previously set by another Essex player, Gabriella Cowley. “I played really well,” said Humphreys. “Before I went I had a little trouble off the tee but I sorted it out, luckily, and drove the ball well. That helped me because my approach play was really good and gave me the opportunity to get the ball close for my birdies.” Humphreys, Williamson, Screen and Martha Lewis (St George’s Hill) made up an England Golf team which beat Switzerland in an U16 international on the day before the championship began. Humphreys, who rates Pannal as one of her favourite courses, commented: “I played really well in the match so I went into the tournament with a good feeling.” It is anticipated that her first round score of fiveunder the CSS will qualify her for the final of the Daily Telegraph BMW junior championship in Portugal in November.

Stoke by Nayland Reach Norman Plum Final S
toke by Nayland, as holders of the Essex Golf Union Norman Plum trophy, played the 2016 SemiFinal on Sunday 14 August against opponents The Warren. In this competition, each team consists of twelve players, with a minimum of two players from each category. The format is 18 hole Four-Ball Better Ball Matchplay with six players at home and six playing away. Captain John Sandford had selected a strong team for both the home and away legs. The first pairing of Roger Gardner and David Boydon were beaten but second pair. Steve Hewett and Steve Evans managed a half point. It was down to Byron Long and Chris Williamson to win 3 and 1 and so
the home leg was all square. News arrived from The Warren that Stoke by Nayland had won two of the three matches. Wins for Ian Benson and Luke Bennett and then Dean Brace and Shaun Underwood meant a place in the final. Both matches were won 2 up. Stoke by Nayland now face either Theydon Bois or Woolston Manor in the final with the chance to defend their title.

Clacton-on-Sea Corsa Classic
C
lacton-on-Sea Golf Club hosted The British Hart Foundation “Corsa Classic” on a hot and sunny Thursday. This very popular event was organized by Clacton Golf Club members Danny Clark and Bob Davidson; it attracted 134 players for this 18 hole Greensome pairs Stableford event. The Shot Gun start meant that all competitors were on their allotted tees around the Clacton club’s championship course, the gun was fired and play was under way. After a good days golf, whilst the players swapped stories about missed putts and great drives, the committee added up all the scores and then announced that the very popular winners for 2016 were Ray Bayerman and Sam Teer returning a fantastic 50 Stableford points from their 12 handicap ( They shot a gross 69), in
second place were Daren Starling and John Kemp with 45 Stableford points. In the Ladies competition, the winners were Heather Bradfield and Pat Gilbert with 42 Stableford points. Clark and Davidson then thanked all the competitors for their support and announced that as the main objective of the day was to raise money for “The British Hart Foundation,” the event had raised the magnificent sum of £1491.
Clacton off to the Semi Final’s
C
lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Essex Golf Union “Youth Shield” team travelled to The Warren Golf Club to play their Quarter-Final match against Stock Brook Manor Golf Club. The day was hot and The Warren Golf Club has lots of hills, unlike Clacton; however, the Clacton team dug deep against an excellent Stock Brook team in a match where birdies were needed to win holes. In match 1, Clacton’s Ben Rendell won 3&1 against Ashley Croft. In match 2, Katy Yates won 3&2 against Molly Haslam, In match 3 Max Smith
won 4&2 against Teddy Papple. In match 4, Club and Team Captain Riley Faulkner playing with a heavy cold, won 1 up against Charlie Dodds and in the final match Clacton’s Super Sub, Wilf Elliott played some great golf against Greg Crawley who was often 100 yards past Elliott off the tee, to loose his match 2 down on the 18th green. Clacton’s Team Manager Keith Potter congratulated his team on the hard fought 4 matches to 1 match win Clacton are now in the Semi Finals of this County Competition for the first time in many years. - 42 -

EASTERN COUNTIES BOYS CHAMPIONSHIPS Wyboston Lakes Golf Club, Bedfordshire – Tuesday 26 July 2016 This year the hosts for the Championships were Bedfordshire with the event held at Wyboston Lakes Golf Club. For once availability enabled Essex to field pretty much their strongest eight man team with a highest handicap of 4.The day was fine with a slight breeze and the tree lined 6000 yard par 70 course which circled two large lakes was in good condition, although most players seemed to think the pace of the greens was inconsistent. At this Championship two trophies are contested,The George Skevington Salver for the individual stroke-play champion and the Bob Bagshaw Trophy for the leading team. The Bagshaw Trophy is a 27 hole event with the winning team determined by adding the best three gross scores to the best three nett scores. The individual stroke-play champion and winner of the Skevington Salver being the lowest scratch score and contested over the afternoon 18 holes.

I think it is fair to say that individually and collectively the Essex boys were far too strong for the opposition and at lunch after playing the front nine (par 34) the two leading players were from Essex with Michael Gilbert (-1) and Harry Robson (4) both negotiating the challenge in level par with a further three of the Essex team on one over. The afternoon round produced much the same story as the Essex boys pulled further ahead of the field. The first player back in the clubhouse was Michael Gilbert who finished on three under with a round of 67 that included three birdies and an eagle. He was shortly followed by Curtis Knipes with a very creditable one under 69 and as the result shows neither were caught with Michael crowned as winner of the Skevington Salver and Curtis runner-up. Having suffered the disappointment last year of missing out winning the Bob Bagshaw team completion by half a point, this year Essex made no mistake. Norfolk on 645½ got bragging rights over last year’s winners Suffolk who finished on 647, but way out in front was Essex on 631½, an outstanding performance from an excellent team of boys. The Essex boys can be justly proud of their achievement and were a credit to the County Golf Union. Credit too must go to David Brooks and the coaching team for the work they have done with these lads over the years Thanks go to the Bedfordshire Golf Union and in particular Martin McDermott for organising the event so professionally let’s hope Essex can do as good a job next year. Match Report- Essex went to Wanstead GC with two last minute replacements in the side. Even so expectations were high in this “must winâ€? match against a very consistent BBO team on a Wanstead GC course that was a challenging test and in fine condition. The morning foursomes proved to be crucial and the top match went in the favour of BBO even though the Essex players were two under par at the close. Matches two and three produced strong performances from Andy May & Jack Dyer and George Leversuch & Todd Clemence with 5&4 and 6&5 victories respectively. The bottom match saw Essex three up after the 13th and it looked like Essex would go into lunch with an almost unassailable advantage to take into the afternoon session. However BBO rallied winning the last five holes to prevail 2up securing a share of the foursomes points at 2-2 leaving the door open for an exciting afternoon singles encounter. The afternoon session saw BBO take the first two matches with close margins followed by a great 4&3 win by Jay Beisser (back from a last 16 finish in the English Amateur on Thursday) against the very experienced Ollie Huggins to tighten things up again. Although four of the last five matches went to the last hole, BBO prevailed through their better handling of the greens in three of them closing Essex out and recording an overall 7.5 to 4.5 victory ensuring they reach the EGSEG League final to be played in October. The match was much closer than the overall result suggested and BBO must be congratulated on their win ensuring Essex relinquished their title of SEG North League Champions. Mention must be made of George Leversuch (Wanstead GC) who was called in to the Essex side three days before and won his foursomes 6&5 and singles 1up producing a display of maturity beyond his years. Essex now play Middlesex at West Middlesex on 14th August in the last match of the season. Thanks go to Wanstead GC who prepared an excellent test of golf and looked after the teams extremely well off the course too. Essex were represented on this occasion by:Andy May (Boyce Hill GC), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club), Jordan Wallace (Abridge GC),Todd Clemence (Braintree GC),Taylor Carter (Rochford 100 GC),Will Percival(Orsett GC), Jack Dyer (Rochford 100 GC) & George Leversuch (Wanstead GC), Report by John Peters County Team Manager

Under 18 Match Report
ESS E X v HE RT S v B B & O. T RI AN GU LAR Welwyn Garden City Golf Club – Sunday 7th August 2016
Welwyn Garden City G.C founded in 1923 is an undulating parkland course measuring 6112yds off the back tees. Its defences are narrow fairways and small greens. Essex were unable to play its usual complement of U18’s due mostly to family holiday, the team captain playing the British Boys and another boy taking up his University place in America, never the less we were able to call upon the services of four U16 County players. Overall, Essex had only 3 players who did not lose a match, Callum Hilton, Michael Gilbert who both won a match and halved the other, giving at total of 3 points from 3 and Harry Moncur winning both his matches producing a maximum of 2 points. Unfortunately, this was not enough with Essex losing both to Herts and BB&O by one point each with 3.5 points to 4.5. Overall the U16 boys played well in what for them is a stronger league that the one they are used to. Essex Team: - Callum Hilton – The Warren, Aaron Edwards-Hill – Chelmsford, Josh Read – Three Rivers, Harry Robson – Orsett, Cassidy Steffans – Orsett, Harry Moncur – Langdon Hills, Curtis Knipes – North Weald. - 47 -

Under 18 Match Report
ESSEX v BB&O v MIDDLESEX TRIANGULAR Three Rivers Golf Club – Monday 15th August 2016
Three Rivers G.C. is a parkland course of some 6400yds set in a very rural part of Essex. The course was presented in first class order with fast and true greens that earned high praise from the players. Essex again suffered from holidays etc. with only one U18 player available. We were however able once again to rely on 7 under 16 players coming to our rescue and what a job they did. The match was over 18 holes of match play. Harvey Payne (15yrs) and Josh Coleman won both their matches, Michael Gilbert and Callum Newton both won 1 match and halved the other and the remainder of the team all won a match each. The match against Middlesex was won 7 matches to 1 and the match against BB & O was decided by the last player, Josh Coleman who had a pressure putt for par to win his match giving Essex a draw. Unfortunately, we cannot now win the league, that will be decided when BB & O and Herts play in the final match. Overall we can be pleased with the performance of the U16’s and feel we can look forward to them playing in the U18’s in the near future. Essex Team: - Ryan Tattan, Michael Gilbert, Harvey Payne & Josh Coleman - all Chelmsford, Curtis Knipes – North Weald, Harry Robson & Callum Newton – Orsett, & Callum Hensby – Rayleigh. - 48 -

Match Report- Essex went to a very “querky”West Middlesex GC, a course comprising a forest and parkland layout with firm but excellent greens, for the last league match of the season focused on signing off with a victory. The morning foursomes proved to be exciting with Essex winning the first two matches comprehensively but suffering an early defeat in the bottom match. This left one match on the course, Tommy King & Justin Phelps arguably Middlesex’s strongest pairing against Will Percival & Jordan Wallace from Essex. What an encounter this proved to be. Nip and tuck the whole way round with Essex eventually finding themselves 2 down with three to play. A strong counter by Essex on the 16th & 17th holes saw the match return to all square with all to play for at the 18th. Middlesx made the green in regulation two shots and Essex were through the green in three shots via the greenside bunker leaving Jordan Wallace a 30yd down hill chip which he duly holed leaving Middlesex to following up with two very nervous puts to secure the half which meant Essex had a slender 2 ½ – 1 ½ lead at lunch. The afternoon session saw early mixed fortunes for Essex winning only two of the first five matches, thanks to a dominant 4&2 win from Taylor Carter and a first class 3 &2 victory from Jay Beisser over Middlesex County Champion Tommy King. On this occasion the three back markers for Essex Will Percival, Ed Fullerlove and Jordan Wallace stepped up to the mark with three comfortable victories ensuring a comfortable 7.5 – 4.5 result in favour of Essex. This result ensured that Essex will finish up runners up or third in the SEG North League once all the outstanding fixtures have been completed. Thanks go to West Middlesex GC who prepared an excellent test of golf and looked after the teams extremely well off the course too. Essex were represented on this occasion by:Andy May (Boyce Hill GC), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club), Jordan Wallace (Abridge GC), Ed Fullerlove (Braintree GC),Taylor Carter (Rochford 100 GC),Will Percival(Orsett GC), Alasdair Plumb (Chelmsford GC) & Mitchel Sarling (Boyce Hill GC). S EG BOYS C OU N T Y F OUR SO ME S Farleigh Golf Club, Surrey – 17/18th August Farleigh G.C. is a 27 hole downlands course located close to the borders of Kent & W. Sussex, designed by John Jacobs Associates. Seven players were taken from the U16 squad (the youngest 15) most of whom can expect to be playing in the U18 squad next year. Eight counties took part with a total of 24 teams. Foursomes is a difficult game, having to ensure you keep your partner in play, placing the ball where they want etc, or in other words think of someone else & not yourself. Not easy when most of your matches are single stroke or match play, but it should assist in the development of course management. The day before, a practice round was played, giving the boys the opportunity to develop and agree a strategy, that one hoped would see them through. The day of the competition was fine & sunny with the course playing short & producing link style bounces. The greens were receptive. The course was not easy as can be evidenced by the winning score of 10 over, for the Club championship played the previous weekend, with some very good players I am told in the field. In the morning round the best team score was 70, with Essex players Josh Coleman & Harry Robson 4th with a74. Overall Essex finished second with a combined score of 228, 5 behind Sussex with 223. The afternoon round proved quite difficult for the boys, as concentration levels seemed to be ebbing, due in part to pressure & fatigue. Michael Gilbert playing with Callum Hensby produced the 4th best score of the afternoon, with a 75 giving us a team score for the afternoon of 236. Our combined totals were a total of 464, placing us in 5th place, with Sussex winning the day on 453, 21 over par. In conclusion it was a massive learning curve for the boys, given their ages & experience at this level but most agreed that they had learnt a lot, particularly with regard to course management. Match Report- Clacton golf course was in good condition unlike the weather which was overcast, with a breeze and rain forecast, not exactly ideal golfing conditions. Additionally a number of our regular players had just returned from an exhausting 36 holes in the SE Group boys foursomes the day before. What could possibly go wrong? Well in all honesty not a lot and with a few new faces in the team to help the more established players the end result was one of the boys most emphatic recent victories underlining the strength in depth of this season’s squad. Essex came out on top after the morning 9 hole foursomes winning four matches to Norfolk’s one with three of these matches only being decided on the last green. Norfolk started the afternoon singles strongly and at around mid-afternoon the result of the contest was in the balance. With Norfolk ahead in the first four matches it wasn’t until you got to Josh Coleman the fifth pairing of the afternoon that you found an Essex player who lead his opponent. Josh who - 52 -

was playing inspired golf was never behind in his match and was the first player back to the clubhouse having beaten Keiran Myatt 7 and 5. The top order struggled to get going over the front nine with all of them being behind at some time, however as the wind increased and the weather worsened the resolve of the Essex boys came through. Curtis Knipes came from four holes down to snatch a half from his match with Harrison Linney continuing his winning ways and his season’s 100% s record. Whist the top order were wrestling with the uncertainty of matchplay further down the order Pat Arundel, Josh Gray, Shyam Solanki and Joe Whiting were in cruise control ensuring that Essex got past the winning post with room to spare. Overall an excellent performance by the Essex team although the margin of the victory was not quite as easy as the final score suggests. As always our thanks go to the hosts Clacton Golf Club for their hospitality and presenting the course in excellent condition and to the Norfolk team for playing the match in the right spirit. SENIORS SOUTHERN COUNTIES REGIONAL QUALIFIER This years event was held at Verulam Golf Club St Albans the home of Samual Ryder the instigator of the Ryder Cup. Whether it was the history of the Club that inspired our Team or just a Team spirit that seemed to envelop them but that certainly surpassed any expectations. The previous best performance was 4 years ago when we tied for first place with 4 ½ points and lost it on the countback. We started in bright sunshine which was to illuminate our performance all day long, as Mark Stones and Chris Aukett took on the top Kent pair. Before long they were struggling on the quick greens and by the time they left the tricky 17th hole they were 1 down. Chris’s drive was a bit right of the fairway and Mark attempted to hit a long ball to put Kent under pressure but he hit a tree which was in the line so that Chris was playing his 3rd shot from further back than his tee shot finished. The outcome was inevitable Kent won the hole and the game to finish two up. However. that loss was cancelled out by a fine 6/5 victory Ian Waller and Michael Partridge over Herts. A solid 4/2 win from Jeff Mathewson and Glynn William over Middlesex, Ian Grant - 53 -

and Steve Rooney secured a narrow win over Middlesex on the final green and the morning was rounded off by Chris Philips and Kevin Saunders 2/1 victory over Kent. To leave us with 4 wins and just 1 loss. So on to the 5 afternoon foursomes Mark Stones and Chris Aukett were first out for the Essex Team and Captain Steve Hazell and myself spilt up so we could see as many games as possible. When I picked up the first pair they were 4 up playing 9 and Tye Carter of Herts and ex Hainault Forest was bemoaning how he had drawn a pair that were playing and putting so well (amazing how thing can change over a round). We then stationed ourselves at a vantage point by the 15th Tee but Mark and Chris never got that far having won 7/5. Next it was a walk down the 18th to see Ian Waller and Mike Partridge lose by 1 hole to Herts. Then Jeff Mathewson and Glyn Williams had a 4/2 win over Middlesex and we were beginning to sense that something great was about to happen. Wins by Ian Grant and Steve Rooney over Middlesex and Chris Philips and Kevin Saunders over Kent assured us of a stunning victory 8 games to 2. The gods and the late Team Captain John McInerny must have been looking down on us. We now go to Haverhill Golf Club on 27th September for the final of the Seniors Southern Counties Foursomes Championships. THE VETERANS TROPHIES The Burstead Golf Club – Tuesday 23rd August 2016 The 2016 competition was played at The Burstead Golf Club on 23rd August on a beautiful Summers day. The course looked in excellent condition with the main challenge to the field of 65 players being the heat from the afternoon sun. There are two trophies presented at this over 55’s event, the main one for the overall winner, The Veterans Trophy, and the second for the best score returned by a player who is over 70 years of age, the Over 70’s Salver. With the course firming up in the dry conditions and some subtle borrows on the excellent greens the early scores indicated the course providing a good challenge to the players. The early leader was JimFern (Five Lakes) with 34 pts, which was soon matched by Bob Finch (Hartswood). Alan Rusbridge (Frinton) then returned a very steady 36pts, two 18’s, and held off the challenge of Paul Cooper (Channels) who returned the same score, but with a lower back nine total of only 13 pts. The challenge from the Channels players was however not yet over, as Mike Steen (Channels) submitted an excellent 38pts to take the Clubhouse lead. Although this was the best score of the day, Mike was eventually pushed into second place as Steve Barry (Stock Brook Manor) also submitted a score of 38pts, but with a better back nine, he won the Veterans Trophy prize on countback. In the over 70’s event, Fred Hill (Basildon) took second place with a creditable 30pts, but the winner was Gerry Keane (Thorndon Park) with a winning total of 31pts, to take the Over 70’s Salver. Our thanks to The Burstead Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and well prepared course, and to their Men’s Captain Paul Benson, who presented all the prizes following the evening meal.

From Inside the Greenkeepers Shed
Why do the Greenstaff Keeping Punching Holes into the Greens?
Aeration holes filled with sand topdressing will allow excess water from the soil to evaporate, promote root development and improve drainage.
T
he word aeration or greens maintenance stimulates negative emotions for many golfers. It may come as a surprise, but golf course managers/head greenkeepers also dislike aeration. After all, the last person who wants to disrupt the smoothness of the putting greens they work so hard to maintain is the greenstaff. Some courses may have performed their maintenance programs in August but the vast majority will have a week
scheduled in September to complete these vital jobs. Golfers often ask, “Why is aeration needed so often? Aeration is an essential program to keep playing surfaces healthy and in good condition. Aeration is performed for a number of reasons, chiefly it is to control organic matter near to the surface, primarily 0-50mm soil profile, it is here that organic matter– i.e., decaying roots and grass - 56 -
stems accumulate. Also aeration will relieve soil compaction, stimulate root growth and improve drainage. If organic matter becomes too thick, it acts like a sponge and holds water at the surface after rain or irrigation. Excessive organic matter also inhibits root growth, reduces oxygen levels in the soil, encourages disease and eventually can lead to turf failure. Furthermore, excessive organic matter creates soft surfaces prone to pitchmarks, foot printing and inconsistent playing conditions. Aeration and topdressing are the most effective ways to control organic matter and maintain smooth, firm, dry putting surfaces. Core aeration involves physically removing small soil cores – e.g., 12mm diameter cores – from the turf and is the most common type of aeration. Aeration holes allow excess moisture to evaporate and promote gas exchange in the soil (oxygen is allowed in whilst poisonous carbon dioxide is released), resulting in stronger root systems and turf that is better able to tolerate golfer foot traffic. Proper timing of aeration will ensure the fastest possible recovery and return to smooth surface conditions. The key to a quick recovery is to perform aeration when the turf is healthy and actively growing with reduced stress levels. At the same time overseeding often takes place to improve sward density and increase the population of better and more sustainable grass species (Bents & Fescues). There are many types of aeration that course managers use throughout the season; some are more labourintensive and disruptive to playing surfaces than others. Lessdisruptive forms of aeration, including micro-tine aeration with
small-diameter, solid tines, also are beneficial because they can alleviate turf stress by promoting oxygen levels in the soil. Aeration programs that have a small impact on a playing surface generally can be performed throughout the season with little or no disruption to play. The type and frequency of aeration needed is course specific and depend on available budgets. Course managers adjust aeration programs based on soil conditions, turf requirements, climate/weather, available staff and equipment plus course events, etc.
Aeration can create short-lived disruption but it is a highly beneficial program that keeps greens healthy and playing well into winter.
Playing conditions are of the utmost importance for most golfers, and aeration is needed to keep turf healthy and playing well. When you consider that the greens have been mowed daily for 5 months often combined with rolling to increase smoothness and green speeds plus constant foot traffic walking over the greens for over 12 hours a day this maintenance is essential to relieve built up soil compaction. just like an annual service for your car or boiler maintenance is required to keep them performing to expectations. Aeration can be disruptive, but the long-term benefits of aeration far outweigh the short-lived disruption. The next time you play on greens that were recently aerated, keep in mind that aeration is performed for the long-term health of the course. The greens may not play their best immediately following some aeration treatments, but everyone is playing the same conditions and golfers still can enjoy the game and make plenty of putts. After all, Tom Watson once shot a 58 when playing at Kansas City Country Club just a few days after the greens had been aerified. PING Introduces iBlade Iron
T
hrough extensive research and observation of leading tour professionals, PING engineers designed the new iBlade iron for golfers who rely on the precision and control to execute the most demanding shots in the game. The blade-style iron follows the highly popular S55 model, which has amassed more than 50 wins around the world since its introduction over two years ago. “The iBlade project was a fun challenge for our engineers,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “They approached the design with the mindset of what the best players in the world demand and need from their irons. They incorporated tour player feedback and created a beautiful club that delivers amazing performance. The iBlade has a simple shape, clean cavity design and incredible feel. It’s already our most-played iron on tour as players around the world have quickly converted to the new design.” The iBlade iron is available for pre-order today at authorised PING golf shops around the world. The body is precision cast from soft, high strength-to-weight ratio 431 stainless steel. The result is the softest, purest feel ever in a PING iron. With the workability to shape shots on command, the compact iBlade iron head delivers consistently precise distance and trajectory control that surpass skilled players’ expectations. A thinner top rail, minimal offset, straight lead edge and sharp high toe will appeal to the eye of the discerning player. Refined bounce angles and ample heel relief, optimised with the same sole width as the S55 iron, produce a workable sole design
for confident shot making from all conditions. Further precision comes from the milled tourspec grooves and precision-machined fly-cut face. The unprecedented feel is achieved through a combination of the soft stainless steel and a larger surface area behind the face that houses an elastomer insert. The insert is “activated” at impact, which results in more vibration damping in the player’s hands and a softer feel and pleasing sound. A hydropearl chrome finish repels water for more control and helps minimise fliers from wet conditions and lies in the rough. “Consistency is the key to strong iron play, and that includes being able to hit the ball farther than before,” said Solheim. “The iBlade delivers ample distance and height, but it’s important that we engineer irons with control and proper gapping. We’ve designed this club to give skilled players the confidence to play any shot and know exactly how far the ball will go.” Forgiveness is also factored into the design. Nearly “pure” tungsten weights (netting a 70% increase in mass relative to the S55 iron) are pressed into the toe of every head to increase the MOI – a key factor in the precision of the iron. “Even players at this level need forgiveness,” added Solheim. “The iBlade continues our longheld practice to engineer every PING iron with maximum stability for its size. In this case, we used high-density tungsten in the toe which we’ve subtly concealed to maintain the clean head design. It has a very high MOI for an iron its size, making the iBlade our most forgiving blade-style iron to date.”
