72 Holes Completed by The Scrubbers W
e are all members of Romford Golf Club and play Saturday mornings for The Scrubbers. The Scrubbers consists of around 40 members and are the friendliest people you could ever meet with several of them coming out and supporting us throughout the day. The members of the team were me, Graham Eklund, Tony Driver and Oliver Smith. Terry Bell was also with us all the way and provided invaluable service with drinks and food and was also our chief photographer.
A few facts from the day: we started at 04.50 and the final putt was sunk at 17.35 and we have reliably been informed that it was the hottest day for 40 years; we completed the 72 holes without stopping. Each of us covered approximately 33.5km, took 44,000 steps and burnt over 5800 calories (taken from my Fitbit) Here are our fundraising links www.justgiving.com/fundraising/brian-easter www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Oliver-Smith92 Apart from the money raised on our Justgiving pages we have at least another ÂŁ600 in cash / cheques to bank which hopefully will continue to rise. -2-

Coronation Time at Colchester
Vicky Frost after winning the ladies' Coronation Cup with Jane Madge the ladies' captain.
K
yle Appleton and Vicky Frost were crowned winners of Colchester Golf Club’s Coronation Cups. Both Cups were presented to mark the Coronation of George VI in 1936 and took place over two rounds in weather getting hotter as the week went on. Kyle Appleton’s rounds in the men’s competition reflected this. Playing off eleven his first round of 67 was not bettered and although his Sunday round of nett 71 was not the best of the day his combined score of 138 was enough to secure the victory. In the ladies Coronation Cup Vicky Frost (20) toughed it out to take the crown after a countback from Philippa Deman (9), both returning a nett level par score 146. Frost had lead after the morning round where her nett 71 was well clear of the field but in the afternoon Deman put her best foot forward and returned an impressive nett 70 to level the aggregate scores and force a playoff. In the play off Frost beat Deman on the fourth extra hole to take the title.

his really is the peak of the season with the British Open at Murfield starting on the 20th month along with many clubs having a number of major events. With the likes of Bubby Watson and Lee Westward using Pings they must be in with a shout for this years open! Along with these events Ping are launching their new Driver, the G400. Due to a date embargo we can only show a silhouette of the product.
At last an accurate launch monitor that can show you exactly how your current clubs perform against the new technology. Clubs from Callaway, Cobra, Lynx, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, Srixon and Wilson can be compared to find the most suitable ones for you. Whether your looking for more length, greater accuracy, higher launch, shaft suitability for your swing or filling those missing wedge gaps, Skytrak and the team at Nevada Bobs Colchester can help. All the information is projected on a 42 inch TV screen so you can see exactly what is happening in real time and 3D!
However here is the great news. As part of the launch and in conjunction with Ping we have one of the new G400 drivers to win in a competition plus a free customer fit. All you have to do is answer the question on the entry slip and pop it into the store or email your name, email address and correct answer to: info@nbcolchester.go-plus.net. The competition will close on Sunday 30th July where we will announce the winner on Facebook shortly after. Finally we have 3 ball offers on the other page available in store now!

ALIGNMENT APPROACH TO THE BALL FROM DOWN THE LINE O
ften playing with club golfers they hit great shots in the wrong direction then blame their swing, but many times the swing was great they just aimed in the wrong direction. Orientating yourself with the target is a big factor in allowing your swing path and clubface to be able to swing to the target without manipulating the clubface through impact, which can be very inconsistent. I have my practice swings before I do anything regarding aiming at the target I have my practice swing to loosen my muscles and pick up the feel of the shot I intend to play. After this as Picture 1 demonstrates I WALK
1
INTO THE BALL FROM DOWN THE TARGET LINE. As I approach the ball from here I’m picking my intermediary target. In this instance I have placed a tee peg to demonstrate Picture 2. Normally this would be a blade of grass or blemish in the ground surface, but the important point is that the intermediary target is no more than around two feet in-front of the ball. This enables me to look at the club-face and intermediary target easily together. In Picture 3 I have now built my stance around my alignment and ready to fire. Great golfing this month Gary

Just Because it’s the Most Expensive ... U
nfortunately, as I’ve mentioned many times before, golf can be a game of huge egos. Still seen as an affluent sport many golfers will try to buy the game which unfortunately doesn’t work. I suppose this is OK for someone who has an endless stream of cash to continually buy more equipment but for many it totally wrecks their enjoyment of the game. There is one particular guy who I’m thinking of as I write this – I won’t mention no names but for the sake of the article let’s call him John. In the last three weeks John has been to the range everyday with only one club – his driver. Each week it’s been a new one and each week it’s been the top model of a different company. Over the last three weeks John has spent approximately £1100 on drivers. But here’s the thing – he can’t hit any of them and in all honesty never will. In fact, they are the worst possible drivers he could have bought. So, is it the fault of the shop he bought them from? Not really, they have a customer who wants to buy – they are an establishment that sells so it surely is a match made in heaven, right? You can’t blame them – they need to sell to survive – if he does not buy from them he will go somewhere else.
Is it the customers fault? A bit, there is plenty of information out there and plenty of unbiased people to speak to so I think there is a little blame there. Perhaps the industry – every advert is about how long and how easy the clubs are to hit so probably a bit of blame lies there also? But here is the worst part, every driver John bought was over £400, what he actually needed was under £200. That’s the club that suits his game and he probably hasn’t even entertained it. Why? Because he believes that the more expensive drivers are better, they must have more technology than the cheaper ones so will therefore answer his prayers. It’s just not the case, sometimes the least expensive club is the right one for you. If you buy an expensive putter do you honestly think it can make you hole every putt? In the same way expensive drivers don’t make you hit more fairways and find extra yardage – the correct club does that, irrespective of the cost. A good way to judge new technology/products is to have a look to see how quickly they made their way onto the second hand auction sites, only one reason they are there ... they didn’t work for the golfer who bought it.

Rob Rips Up The Course
T
Rob Cornish.
he recent heavy rain and great work by the greenkeeping team at Playgolf has worked wonders on the course. The muchneeded rain has seen everywhere green up, after the recent dry spell saw links-like conditions prevail. The wickedly, undulating greens, looked like a freshlyhoovered front-room carpet and were playing well. With the rough up, the tight course was rewarding accurate tee shots and approach play, but as usual, punishing wayward shots. Playgolf Colchester vice-Captain, Rob Cornish (16) put in his round of the year so far to win the Gazette Open Singles medal
competition. His wining round of gross 83, nett 67 included a creditable seven pars, which saw him snatch victory by a single shot from the pack. Second and third place needed countback to separate four players, which saw Paul McDermott (10) with his gross 78, nett 68, take second place. McDermott carded 10 pars, including six on the back-nine and a par four birdie, to see him head the chasing pack. Andreas Fantousi (17) carded six pars to clinch third place. Conor Garvey (8) carded the lowest-gross of the day, but missed out on a podium finish, in fourth place, by a narrow margin, carding 11 pars and a parfive birdie. Martin Kilbey (13) was fifth, the last to card nett 68, penciling in eight pars to boot.
We’re Staying Putt, Says South Essex Golf Centre
B
rentwood, Essex – South Essex Golf Centre has acted to quash rumours about its future by issuing a statement which leaves no room for doubt as to where its priorities lie. The Chief Executive of Crown Golf, which owns and operates the golf centre, has spoken out to clarify matters regarding an indoor sports facility on an adjacent plot of land.
“South Essex Golf Centre is a great attraction for golfers and following refurbishment work in 2016 we have seen good growth in the numbers of people using and enjoying its facilities” said Stephen Towers. “Contrary to some rumours which are flying
about, South Essex is very much staying a golf centre, which is what we do best! Our members and other customers can be sure that South Essex Golf Centre plans to continue providing 27 fantastic holes of golf and the South East’s leading FootGolf course for years to come, as well as our driving range, new-look clubhouse and all those things which make us popular for weddings and family celebrations too. “Our landlord, Russell Bartlett, had previously developed an indoor sports facility on land adjacent to the golf club, but these buildings are currently vacant. We would welcome future development there, and indeed would warmly welcome even more customers to the home of friendly golf in Essex, if this happened.” Contact Crown Golf Kevin Lloyd, k.lloyd@crown-golf.co.uk +44 (0)1276 911012, www.crown-golf.co.uk

H
ow do you react to a bad shot? Its not easy to take sometimes to but what you find on your good days is that you react well when you hit bad shot versus loosing the plot. So it makes sense that this could a vital area that could save you shots and prevent you getting on a bad run of holes. So are there some key tecnhiques you can use to train your self to react well? n Accept that golf is not a game of perfect – You will hit bad shots as everyone does. If you accept this then you have a good chance of reacting well to a bad one. n Keep your head and eyes up – When you hit a bad shot the tendancy is for the eyes to go down and for your posture to slump. Aim to stand tall and keep looking up. n Make a practice swing like you should have hit it – After you have hit that bad shot make a swing like you would have wanted. This will help train yourself for the next time you face a similar shot and you you walk to the next shot with a more positive image. These small tecnhiques can start to have a big effect on your round and help minimise the effects those inevitable bad shots will have on your round. This is an everyday challenge but aim to work them into your game over time. - 14 -

Julie and Rob Take it Their Stride – All for a Good Cause
B
entley Golfers Julie Piper and Rob Edge take it all in their stride, Julie laid down the gauntlet to her Golfing buddy Rob, let's challenge ourselves to achieving 50,000 steps in one day. The challenge was accepted but how could they achieve 50,000 steps. Rob had the answer, they would walk to London to their place of work and walk back in the evening. Julie left her home at 4.30am and met Rob at 5.00am, the walk then got underway, eleven miles later they arrived in London and took their seat at their desks. At Lunchtime they continued walking around London so that their calf muscles would not cease up. After completing a day's work at the office they put on their running shoes and started their walk back to their homes. The walk would be extra challenging as the heat had taken its toll as there were some exceptional temperatures for that time of the year. The odd refreshment was taken on board along the way and it was during a comfort break they realised that they could complete the equivalent of a marathon. This extra challenge would supersede the original 50,000 steps and this became a mammoth 60,000 steps. Arriving at their perspective homes they both realised they were a few steps short of their target so Rob decided to water his garden and this tipped him over the 60,000 step threshold. Julie on the other hand took on a mini walk near her home to achieve her goal. During the week of the challenge they achieved over 150,000 steps each and on the day they achieved their 60,000 step challenge, this was the equivalent of taking part in a marathon. Mark Gallop, Bentley Club Secretary is extremely proud of their achievements as they raised over ÂŁ400 for their Club Captain and Lady
Captain's Charities (Alzheimer's Society and Prostrate Cancer). The fund raising did not stop there, an additional ÂŁ150 was raised and donated to the recent Glenfell Tower tragedy. Julie said the support for this bizarre challenge was overwhelming although my partner Nigel thought I was mad but he was really supportive. Rob added, it was tough going especially on the return journey due to the heat, but a nice cold beer helped cool us down. Asked whether they would do it again, it was a resounding YES from Julie and Rob, they said watch this space we will think of another challenge that will test our resolve.

Owls Provide Three Birdies in a Row for Golfers
G
olfers on a Suffolk course have witnessed the ultimate – three birdies in a row. It did not occur on the fairways or greens of Newton Green Golf Club, but in one of the two barn owl boxes the nature wise club has installed beside one of its fairways.
The three baby little owls were recently gently removed from their box by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, tagged and put back in their nesting place. Martin Brightwell, head greenkeeper, said: “We installed the boxes three years ago, and in the second year in one of them we had four baby barn owls, which were tagged by the trust. “Now we have had three little owls in the same box. The second box has attracted only squirrels, and it is being relocated. “The wildlife trust is hoping it might be able to trace some of our four barn owls from last year. I would be interesting to know how far they have spread.”
Heavens Open for Clacton
C
lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Ladies travelled to “Playgolf Colchester Golf Club” on Friday 9th June to play their last Essex Ladies Golf Union Bronze Shield match. The Ladies all arrived in good time for our bacon roll and a tea, ready to start our 7th and last match of the Bronze Shield league section. We started the day which was cloudy with sunny periods, it looked good for a great match on a dry day. We got half of it right and had a good match, but the heavens opened up for about half an hour which resulted in a good soaking for a lot of us. It was a hard-fought match, and we were all keen to try and make it six wins out of seven. I am very pleased to say the ladies team of Team Captain Chris Crossfield,
Brenda Lord, Sonja Strutt, Pat Messenger, Jenny Corbyn, Heather Bradfield and Kathy Sinnott achieved a 4-3 victory and a very good chance to be in the Semi-finals later in the year. We should all keep our fingers crossed. - 22 -

44 members from all sections of the club turned out on Sunday 4th June to celebrate Captain’s Day with the 2017 Captain, Martin Paterson The day started early with registration from 7.15 followed by golf played on a course in excellent condition and in marvellous weather. After golf 170 members and guests enjoyed a barbeque lunch on the terrace. Martin said “it is because of

WHY RHYTHM IS IMPORTANT! I
always get asked how can I become consistent? Well there are many facets to that question. However, a very important part of the game of Golf has to be Rhythm. When you Putt, Chip, Bunker Shot, Pitch or Full Swing, Rhythm is behind it all. Many years ago in 1989 when I was suffering with my Putting for about 2 years, John Westwood (Lee Westwood's Dad) told me to focus on 1000 and 1 (1000 being the backswing and 1 being the forward swing) during my Putting Stroke. I had made friends with Lee at
this time and his Dad saw my putting and decided to help me. As a Maths teacher and someone who had helped Lee with his Golf, I listened and believe it or not has gave me 1 of the best rhythms I could ever ask for. This was proved at a seminar using Quintic Ball Roll. Focus on your rhythm and even utilise 1000 and 1 in your putting stroke. Please tell me how you get on. I would be interested to know. All the best,

busy week at Colne Valley Golf Club was kicked off by the seniors as they held their annual greensomes competition. 15 teams of 2 battled it out in the difficult format and the result had to be decided on countback as Allan Scott & Kerry Flitter narrowly beat Geoff Wyatt & Peter Swanston into 2nd place after both pairs returned 40 points. Michael Hoines & Paul Neale were 3rd on 37 points.
Stuart Hurst left, John Poulson right.
(Left to right – Allan Scott & Kerry Flitter receive their trophy from Seniors Vice Captain Geoff Earnshaw).

Their 37 points was also matched by Jerry Callow & Roger Cook as well as Andrew Carter & Tony Murton in an extremely close finish which saw Callow/Cook come in 2nd place. - 26 -

Bedlam Golf Society June Ryder Cup Day
T
his is our thirtieth year, and, along with ten other golf days per year, we annually hold this one at Hainault Golf Course. The members in white are from Essex and in Red are from Kent. The day was a brilliant success, the course is playing really well, and the round was followed by an exceptional Chinese Meal hosted by restaurateurs,Vincent and Ricky, who can be seen in the picture by the eagle eyed, in white shirts, playing for Essex.
The third picture features the two Captains for the day Barry Holman, on the left (for Essex and Organizer), receiving the trophy from Jamie Widdis, on the right (for Kent and incidentally also Captain of Bedlam for this year). Regrettably co-organizer (Gary Gordon) was unable to attend due to work pressures. It was a close contest and Essex won the day by only one point. In past few years it seems that the trophy has gone on alternative years to each side respectively.

Bentley Golfers Turn Out to Support One of Their Lady Members
B
entley Golfers came out in force to support one of their Lady Golf Members. Gina Rose a member of Bentley Golf Club for ten years was diagnosed with an inoperable Brain Tumour six years ago. Upon hearing the devastating news that the Tumour had grown the Members decided to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity. Firstly her husband Gary decided to forego his 60th birthday presents and instead asked family and friends to donate to the charity, he then entered the Brentwood half marathon and completed the event in one hour fifty five minutes. Golfers helped tip the money raised to over £6,000 Gary said ‘I was overwhelmed with my fellow Golfers and their generosity’. However the fund raising did not stop there, the Ladies Section organised a Golf Day and nominated Gina’s charity as the recipient of funds raised. The winner Joy Wright said ‘it was never about winning on the day we wanted to raise as much as we could for Gina’s charity’. Bentley Golfers then tested their quizzing skills
and with an attendance of over 125 people took the fund raising to over £8,000. Club Captain John Moody said on the night of the quiz that ‘the night belonged to Gina and Gary and that we wish Gina all the best as she completes her Radiotherapy Treatment and awaits to hear whether she will need to undergo chemotherapy'. Gina who is very upbeat and a bubbly individual was like her husband overwhelmed with the support and generosity of her fellow Golfers, her goal is to try and push the fund raising to £10,000. Everyone wishes Gina all the best as she continues her treatment and anyone www.justgiving.com/fundraising/GaryRose-2

Driving In the Change at Notleys Golf Club
A
new year has started at Notleys Golf Club - the new Club Captain, Dene I’Anson drove in recently with great aplomb, as you can see here following his first drive for 2017 amongst the crowd of member spectators at the course shouting “encouragement” such as “out of bounds”, “in the ditch” and even “air shot”! SDene “Drove-In” with fellow captain of the Seniors Section Mike James, and will be raising funds for Little Havens Hospice this year. In addition, our erstwhile Captains also “putt out” on the 18th green to close out their years’, after a successful year of charity raising, golf, and informal events like Quiz Nights and Night Golf.
Outgoing Club Captain Darran “Daz” Liversidge is shown here in grey, and outgoing Seniors Captain, Dave Brackenbury in green top and cap.

Always with a sign toward innovation and our friendly atmosphere of a club, the day concluded with our now traditional “Bolf ” competition – that is, golf from pretty much anywhere required on each short hole. As you can see, our new Captain had to display his prowess from a very unusual position in this round!
GET TO KNOW YOUR ESSEX PRO JAMES B LAKE James is the Head Professional at Canons Brook Golf Club Favourite golf course you have ever played? Seignosse in the south of France or any course at Woburn. How long have you been a PGA professional 15 years.
The growing members of Notleys, with additional joiners from some other local clubs this year, are very much looking forward to a fantastic year, and have already gotten on to a great start with two victories in the Jubilee Cup, and progressing to the third round of the Norman Plum following victory over Crondon Park initially in April 2017. Hope to see you all there soon!

I
decided to write this article based on the period of unseasonably windy but warm weather, suddenly we were faced with hard running conditions with 20mph plus winds. The best in the world will no doubt be facing the challenges below in a few weeks time during The Open at Royal Birkdale. It is very easy to “force” shots and swing “harder and faster”when playing in the tough conditions but with a slightly different approach the way you manage your way round the course will be greatly improved. If I break down the article into a par 4, so firstly we start on the teeing ground. TEEING GROUND If the hole is playing downwind pop the driver in the bag and trust the 3 wood option, this will allow for a much higher ball flight with increased carry distance. The ball flight actually lowers downwind so using a more lofted wood generates maximum trajectory combined with a good strike. We all know a 3 wood is an easier club to use than the driver but how often do we use it?

H
aving suffered a number of cancellations in the run-up to the event only 40 past and present Lady Captains played in the Society of Essex Lady Captains 1st summer meeting at Frinton in mid June. However, those who did play were treated to a real test of golf on the tricky seaside link’s Havers Course. The tight lies, the semi tidal ditches and the punishing rough in places made scoring more difficult than usual for many of the ladies. The start was delayed a few minutes due to lightening, but the storm soon blew across. The fairly strong wind and gusty conditions continued throughout the round, but the sun came out later on. Caroline Gard a Frinton Past Lady Captain stood in, as the current Lady Captain was unavailable for the event. Our thanks are extended to Frinton Golf Club for hosting the event, to Caroline and the other Frinton ladies who helped on the day but particularly to the
catering staff who put on a lovely spread which all the ladies enjoyed at the end of the day. Despite the tricky conditions, 3 pairs managed to score 40 points and above. In third place, were Carol Bell (Benton Hall) & Dawn Marriott (Forrester Park) with 40 points ocb, 2nd place went to Anne Coventry (Chelmsford) & Sofie Ahmed (Benton Hall), and in first place and winners of the Froom Cup were Jane Collier (Forrester Park) & Pam Stevens (Gosfield Lake). The prizes were presented by Caroline Gard (Past Lady Captain Frinton Golf Club) & Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society). Places are still available at the Society of Essex Lady Captains 3rd Summer Meeting at Stoke by Nayland on 15 August. Any past or present Essex Lady Captains interested in attending should contact Jane Collier (Meetings Organiser) via email.

Greenkeepers Blog From Essex BIGGA J
une saw Course Managers deal with dry and hot conditions; ok its summer I hear you cry and that shouldn’t necessarily be a shock but temperatures consistently over 30 degrees is a bit abnormal and according to the Met Office this June was the longest continuous hot spell since 1976. In hot conditions golfers are often reminded to drink plenty of water before teeing it up on a hot summer day to avoid dehydrating. Similarly, putting greens also need to stay hydrated. Typically, putting greens are irrigated at night or early in the morning. However, during periods of hot weather or low humidity, turf may need additional water throughout the day because soils can quickly dry out in intense sunshine. Light watering during the day helps keep putting greens healthy, uniform and playing well. Deciding how much water to apply overnight is a difficult, calculated decision that Course Managers must make regularly after looking at evapotranspiration rates. Applying slightly too much water can create soft playing conditions and negatively affect turf health; but playing quality and turf health will also suffer if conditions are too dry. In general, soft and wet conditions are more detrimental to playing quality and turf health than dry conditions. Therefore, Course Managers tend to err on the dry side when scheduling overnight irrigation. Often, the amount of water applied overnight is insufficient to maintain optimal playing conditions and turf health throughout a hot summer day. Light applications of water during the day help turf survive by alleviating one, or more, of the following stresses: n Drought Stress – Caused by insufficient soil moisture. Light applications of water during the day supplement overnight irrigation to provide plants with enough soil moisture to support healthy growth. n Heat Stress – Many cool-season grasses such as creeping bentgrass and Poa annua can rapidly decline during excessively hot weather. Applying small amounts of water to the turf canopy can temporarily reduce surface temperatures, cooling the turf as water evaporates. This process is commonly referred to as syringing.
n Localised Dry Patch (LDP) – Fungi in the soil exude waxy substrates which can cover soil particles which result in hydrophobic conditions and wetting agents have to be applied to breakdown these wax particles and get the soil wet again. Soil Moisture is measured in Volumetric Content % (VMC) and greenkeepers like to find a level between field capacity (FC) and permanent wilting point (PWP), FC is when all pull of gravitional water (natural drainage) through the soil profile is equal to the properties of adhesion and cohesion of that soil, while PWP is when the plant roots can no longer extract anymore moisture from the soil. For soil push up greens FC would be 30-35% VMC while PWP would be below 10%. Hand watering is the most effective and accurate way to water putting greens. Even with a state-of-the-art irrigation system, certain areas on each putting green will need more water than others – e.g., mounds and high-traffic areas, also wind can prevent water from sprinklers missing areas of the green . Hand watering provides greater control over where – and how much – water is applied, making it much easier to target specific areas. Imagine painting inside a house; a paint roller is effective for the majority of the wall, but the precision of a small brush is required for small, detailed areas. Like the paint roller, the irrigation system effectively covers large areas, but hand watering is like the brush and more effective for the details. Although hand watering is more effective and precise, it also requires skilled personnel and significant man hours. Therefore, Course Managers must strike a balance between hand watering and automatic irrigation. Although watering putting greens during the day may occasionally inconvenience golfers; the inconvenience is worth it. Keeping turf cool and hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy putting greens that roll smooth and true.

FALDO WEDGE REPORT The Warren – Wednesday 31st May 2017
T
he Warren hosted The Faldo Wedge this year with a great entry of 120 Juniors from all around the County. The weather was kind throughout the day, bright but fresh for the early starters, gradually warming up through the day. The Faldo Wedge consists of morning and afternoon start times, the mornings play saw some great golf, no more so than the host club’s ‘B Team’ consisting of Frederick Warn (Hcp22), Oliver Warn (22Hcp) & Paul Killington (Hcp21) returning with a combined score of 112 stableford points. Frederick’s 39 points was the highest for a while also until Abbie Webb (Thorpe Hall) returned with 40 points playing off a handicap of 13. Abbie’s Team would finish on 107 points just

5 points back from The Warren B. The afternoon saw a continuation of good scoring, stableford points in the high thirties were becoming common by midway through the afternoon and The Warren B Juniors were looking concerned they may be about to see their lead slip. ‘Colchester A’ returned with 112 points also, which was impressive with the team of Max Maynard (Hcp7), Daniel Nicholls (Hcp4) & Cai James (Hcp2). Unfortunately for them, countback was applied and ‘The Warren B’ remained top of the leaderboard. Luke King (Hcp11) of Thorpe Hall returned a score of 45 points taking the lead not only in the individual boy’s competition but also helping Thorpe Hall B team to claim the top spot on the leaderboard. Team members Ali-Abbas Haji (Hcp28) & Max Webb (Hcp17) returned with scores of 32 points and 36 points respectively, so they claimed top spot by 1 point for a total of 113 points. Niall Attwood of Rochford Hundred Golf Club then recorded a best score of the day with a whopping 48 points playing off a handicap of 23. Dropping just 11 shots in his round was a great effort and will assist him in reducing his handicap no doubt. Unfortunately, the rest of Niall’s team could not match his incredible round and they were unable to displace any of the top teams, but Niall’s 48 points was more than enough to pick up the best boy’s individual prize. Abbie Webb (Thorpe Hall A) was the winner of the best Girls individual prize whilst the ‘Thorpe Hall B’ score of 113 was just enough to clinch The Faldo Wedge. The course was in great shape and The Warren hosted the day magnificently, enabling all those involved to have a very enjoyable day. Sir Nick Faldo himself showed an interest in the event as he tweeted the Essex Golf Union, wishing everyone the best of luck and stating he remembered the best shot he played with the Club that is now our annual Junior Team Trophy. A nice touch that County Secretary Nick McEvoy mentioned during the presentation. Our thanks to all the Junior Organisers that do so much for junior golf in the county and The Warren Golf Club for hosting the event. - 48 -

ESSEX AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club – 3rd and 4th of June 2017
T
he rolling hills of the Essex-Suffolk border was the location for the 2017 Championship, on the Gainsborough Course at Stoke-by-Nayland GC. The first day’s play commenced at 8.00am in reasonably good weather conditions, which improved as the weekend progressed. After the morning’s play on Saturday, Curtis Knipes from Abridge GC held a 1 shot lead over Harry Butler (Chigwell) with a 5 under par round of 66; the highlight of his round being an eagle on the long par 5 14th. The standard of scoring was excellent with the top 10 players all recording under par rounds. In the afternoon the best score of 67 was recorded by Will Percival (Orsett) and Arron Edwards-Hill (Chelmsford) with Curtis Knipes following up his excellent morning round with a solid 3 under par 68, to hold the overnight lead at 8 under par. Arron Edwards-Hill and Jack Dyer were lying just behind on 5 under par. The Team competition, for the Esplen Trophy, is played over the first 36 holes, and this year Curtis Knipes and Jamie Richards from Abridge Golf Club won with a combined 5 under par total of 279.

With the field being reduced overnight from the 78 who started the top 42 and ties, 42 players commenced play on the final day. By lunch-time, with a round of 5 birdies and no dropped shots, Arron Edwards-Hill had caught Curtis Knipes on 10 under par with the best score of the round, a 66. With a level par round Jack Dyer was 5 off the pace and the tournament seemed to be a 4th round shoot-out between the Curtis and Arron in the final group. Curtis birdied the 2nd after a deft 3rd shot chip to within a few feet, the 4th with a chip in from just off the front of the green, and the 6th with a solid 15 foot putt. Arron was unlucky to only have a run of par holes to his credit which left him 3 adrift of the pace after the first 6 holes.
However, Arron managed to birdie the par 3 9th and the signature hole 10th to cut the lead to 1. On the par 3 11th hole Curtis had his par putt lip out to level the scores, and on the short par 4 12th Curtis made his only error of the round with an errant bunker shot to give him another bogey and to hand the lead to Arron for the first time. However, on the next hole Curtis bounced back to sink a twelve foot putt for a birdie whereas Arron’s par putt lipped out to hand the lead back to Curtis again. By now the large number of spectators following these events were being treated to an enthralling spectacle. On the 14th Curtis extended his lead with a steady par, and on the next hole Arron hit his approach shot over the green to again drop a shot whereas Curtis hit a good shot to the flag to score another birdie and take a 4 shot lead over Arron. Arron then managed to birdie the 17th but solid pars over the remaining 3 holes from Curtis saw him run out a worthy winner by 3 shots. The 3rd player in this final group, Jack Dyer did not start his final round too well, but recovered to finish with a creditable score of 3 under for the round, 8 under for the tournament and 3rd place. 16-year-old Curtis Knipes, had an excellent four rounds of golf, all in the 60’s, and was a well deserved winner of the title, Essex Amateur Champion 2017. Also worth a mention is Connor Worsdall (The Essex), who had a final round of 63 including 8 birdies and no dropped shots, setting a new course record. Mr Don Wiggins, the Stoke-by-Nayland Captain, presented the prizes and Roger Warmsley, the EGU President, thanked the Club for their hospitality and the course for being well presented. He noted that with 8 players being level par or better the course played well. - 50 -

he first match of the 2017 season was played on Sunday 18th June at the beautiful West Herts Golf Club – 32 degrees in the shade! Format change means home and away to Herts and home and away to Kent. No longer a triangular fixture. Certainly on this occasion it was a game of two halves. The morning foursomes went very much Herts way, their pairings were extremely strong. Will Percival and Callum Pipe for Essex managed a half, with Herts winning all the other matches. Games were tightly contested but Herts were in the very strong position at lunch time. ½ - 3½ Afternoon Singles were most definitely a whole new ball game. Early excellent wins from Will Percival 5&4 (playing 7 under par), and Jordan Slater 6&4 (playing 5 under par). Followed by 3&2 and 2&1 wins from Callum Pipe and Ben Wyatt respectively. U 18 Inter Counties League
ESSEX v BB&O v MIDDLESEX Lambourne Golf Club – Sunday 18th June 2017
S
unday 18th June was the opening day of the Inter Counties League season and on a gloriously sunny day at the picturesque tree lined Lambourne Course in Buckinghamshire the Essex under18 team took on their counterparts from Bucks, Berks & Oxen and Middlesex. There was plenty of pre-match optimism from the players and on paper the Essex team should have been strong enough to overcome both these opponents, but as everyone will tell you golf isn’t played on paper. The day got U18 Inter Counties League off to just the wrong start with Essex v BB&O v Middlesex Michael Gilbert acquiring a neck strain on the practice range, which necessitated his ESSEX BB &O MIDDLESEX withdrawal after nine holes. Fortunately County Champion Curtis Knipes did exactly what a county champion should do and defeated his opponents as did Captain for the day Josh Read both of whom played exceptional golf. Callum ESSEX BB &O MIDDLESEX Newton undefeated from last season continued his county form and battled his way to pick up both points with the final Essex point coming from Liam Francis. Whilst the BB&O team contained one England international player and represented the sterner test for Essex it was hugely frustrating that they didn’t achieve more against the much weaker Middlesex side. Overall this was a disappointing result for the Essex contingent and one hopes that the return fixtures later in the season will provide an opportunity to redress the balance and better showcase the skill of the Essex team. As always our thanks go to our hosts for providing a splendid golfing facility on which to play this match. STEPHEN GOLDING Team Manager 18th June 2017 @ Lambourne Golf Club

ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Chelmsford Golf Club – 22 and 23rd of June 2017
P
lay on day one of this year’s Championship was delayed due to a nearby thunderstorm, but eventually got underway on a pristine Chelmsford course, with the par 68 providing a tough challenge to a full field of 78 players. The early pace was set by Fred Selfe (Belhus Park) and Ron Wilkes (Orsett) who both returned a very creditable 74. Fred submitting a nett 67 and Ron a nett 68. It took a large proportion of the field to finish before Alan Connell (Chelmsford) finally bettered their score, with a gross 73, also giving him a nett level par 68. But it was down to the late starters to set the best overnight scores, Mark Witten (Orsett) submitting a gross 72, quickly followed in by defending champion, Steve Rooney (Orsett) who had the best round of the day, a 71. The players hope for better weather conditions on the second day were thwarted by a persistent strong breeze blowing across the course. Fortunately, the sun did shine to keep temperatures up, and Mark Hyam (Warley Park) set the early Clubhouse target with a 74 to follow up his opening 75, his 149 total proving too difficult for most to match, and his nett 137 setting a very challenging target in the over 60’s category. As many players were having their challenge blown off course, Graham Bennet (Chelmsford) came in with an excellent 71 (the best score on day two) to add to his first round 77 to take the lead with a 148 total, which also put him in a strong position in the PTO

over 55’s nett event with a nett 142. Both Alan Connell and Mark Whiten struggled to match their opening day efforts and slipped down the leaderboard. Finally Steve Rooney finished his round with a fighting 75 to successfully defend his title with a 146 total. Steve will once again go to Woodhall Spa in September to represent Essex as Seniors County Champion. Graham Bennet finished runner-up, with Mark Hyam taking third place three shots behind the winner. In the handicap categories, the Over 55’s winner was Richard Higgins (Stock Brook Manor) with a nett 140, followed by Graham Bennett on 142, on countback from Andy Dougherty (Crondon Park). The over 60’s winner was Mark Hyam (Warley Park) with a nett 137, from Ian Waller (Thorndon Park) on 140 beating Fred Selfe (Belhus Park) on countback. For the over 65’s Ron Wilkes (Orsett) took the honours with a two round nett total of 138, beating Edward Keeble (The Rayleigh Club) by two on 140. Alan Watts (Chelmsford) won the over 70’s nett prize with 141, with John Wisbey (Hainault Forest) taking runner up spot on 145. Our thanks to Chelmsford Golf Club for hosting this event, with many players commenting on how well presented the course had been.

THE HERBERT BISHOP VASE West Essex Golf Club – Thursday 29th June 2017
T
he Herbert Bishop Vase was presented by WH Bishop of Mersea Island Golf Club in 1939 to be competed for by the Captains and Secretaries of the affiliated clubs and the members of the County Executive Committee. In recent years, we have allowed other club officials to play if the Captain or Secretary/Manager is not available. This year was attended by a field of 40 teams, 38 clubs were represented and West Essex hosted a magnificent day. The format was fourball betterball stableford with the 90% of handicap rule being applied. Early scores suggested it would be a tight competition as many of the first teams returned scores over 40 points. The weather was kind and the course was presented beautifully, making it possible for a really good score to top the table. John Reeder and Brian Hatwell of Theydon Bois returned a score of 42 points, which seemed an incredibly popular score on the day. Proof of this was the fact that they actually got the same amount of points as third place but losing on countback to three teams meant that their back nine score was good enough for 6th position. Next was David Frost and Graham Bowers from Burnham on Crouch, also with 42 points securing 5th spot. 4th position was won by Chris Collen and Lee Stevenson of Crondon Park with 42 with 23 points on the back nine. Epping Golf Club’s Pat Shannon and Richard Fisher managed to card a 24 point back nine to secure third position, Richards Eagle three on the last proved to be a valuable finish for 42 points. The Warren managed a great score of 44 points which was good enough for second position. Terry Jones and Mike Bedwell had a consistent card apart from their very last hole where they dropped their only point all round. The score of the day came from Chelmsford, Roger Scothern and Ron Ryall dovetailed remarkably well. When Roger holed his fourth shot from about 100 yards on 17 for a par and another 3 points, they must have thought it was the icing on the cake. He managed to follow it up with a par at the par 5 last for a further two points and guaranteeing victory by just 1 point with a total of 45. Congratulations to all our winners and a huge thank you to West Essex Golf Club who were fabulous hosts as always, on and off the course.

And with the new appointment of Head Professional James Blake and the backing of the Totally Golf superstore based in Harlow, the service provided in the pro shop has never been better. From high quality lessons, full custom fitting and equipment advice, the golfers at canons brook will be well looked after. James has left the position of senior teaching professional at Redbourn golf club in Hertfordshire, where he has been for the last nine years. During this time, he has coached golfers from the England Junior team and Herts county teams including the U12 European girls champion.
James says “I am really excited and looking forward to helping make Canons Brook one of the friendliest and highest quality clubs in the county for members and visitors alike. As a junior member myself, I have great memories of the club and im keen to help it to become one of the best clubs in the area.” With James’ help the club have already put into place the design for the ‘Brook’ course. A shorter length course with holes ranging from 60yds to 120yds, where new and younger golfers can be introduced to playing on a real golf course, without the length and difficulty Canons Brook offers the more experienced golfer. James plans to increase the junior and ladies section through fun junior coaching and the ‘Get into Golf ’ coaching scheme that has proved very popular at his previous club. If you would like to book a tee time or if you would like more information on lessons or equipment advice call the pro shop on 01279 418357.

I appreciate all of the efforts our participating clubs have taken this year, and sadly only 16 go through. However, this month, we entered another key Milestone. In the League Phase breached a figure of over 3000 Essex golfers participating overall since the comp started, and even just for this year only we have had over a 1000 (1008) individual players participating in the competition. Indeed, James Bevan from Canons Brook became our 3000th competitor in the Jubilee Cup – well done If you have been watching the website, you may have seen the recent innovation from our web guru Christer Stenbacka. Callaway Launches Its First Multi-Sport Watch
C
allaway, one of the world’s leading golf equipment manufacturers, has introduced the first multi-sport watch designed specifically for golfers – the ALLSPORT. With the ever-increasing emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, Callaway has incorporated popular fitness tracking features into a conventional golf GPS watch, including a step counter, calorie tracker and multi-sport training capabilities for a range of sports including running, cycling and swimming. The ALLSPORT can also be synced via Bluetooth to the free Callaway smartphone app to receive call, text and email notifications directly to the wrist. “Callaway has combined a golf GPS, multisport fitness tracker and smartwatch into an extremely wearable, lightweight design,” said Brand Fusion UK Sales Manager Tony Fletcher. “It will give golfers a wider appreciation of fitness and lifestyle tracking while still offering a quality GPS device that will help lower scores on the course,” he added. The GPS function offers yardages to the front, middle and back of greens for more than 30,000 pre-loaded courses, plus layup and carry distances to hazards and doglegs. It also measures shot distance and has a scorecard that tracks total shots, GIR and putts-per-round. The battery life lasts 8-12 hours while in GPS mode and comes with an easy-charge magnetic charger.
itleist, the #1 Ball in Golf, is extending its newly introduced Special Play Number ball offering to dedicated golfers through Titleist golf ball retailers across the country. Following an extremely successful introduction as part of the much-loved Loyalty Rewarded promotion – where golfers who purchased three dozen Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf balls were rewarded one dozen free – the Special Play Number promotion allowed golfers to choose their own ‘Special Play Number’ to feature on all Titleist balls purchased. Golfers were able to select any number, including 00 and all digits from 1-99, allowing them to play with a golf ball which reflects a significant or lucky number. Outperforming expectations, Special Play numbers accounted for 40% of all orders placed during the Loyalty Rewarded promotion. Michael Creighton, Titleist Golf Ball Manager, said: “The addition of Special Play numbers as part of the Loyalty Rewarded promotion was extremely popular with Pro V1 and Pro V1x players. “Launching Special Play Numbers as a stock option for consumers means more of our golf ball loyalists will be able to choose a personally-significant play number and stand out within their four-ball.” Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x Special Play numbers, available in 00, 1-99, in both stock and custom options launched on 12th June, 2017 in UK & Ireland. Stock and custom orders can be placed for Special Play numbers from 12th June, via Acushnet inside sales team, E-Sales or local ASM. No minimum volumes required for stock orders, standard carriage terms apply. www.titleist.com
